Last Night on ‘Glee’: Anti-Troop Hate Hits Primetime!
by Jenny EriksonThe following contains spoilers. You’ve been warned.
“Glee” was back last night after a month-long hiatus, which means that I’m back now – the morning after. Didja miss me? I missed you. And I missed “Glee” too. On what other show can I get my musical numbers and teenaged drama all wrapped in a giant bow of glorious propaganda?
There is no other.
This week, “Glee” was high on love, down on the military, and big on acceptance. Unless, of course, you actually want to join the military, in which case it’s all doom on you, and the military turns you into a drug addict and therefore your widowed mother into a liar.
Hmm… let me back up a moment.
Toward the beginning of the episode, Finn confesses to Mr. Schuester that he met with a recruiter… an army recruiter. The Glee Club coach appears troubled by the news, because you know, who joins the military unless they have to?
Meanwhile, Becky (who has Down Syndrome) decides that she had a ginormous crush on wheelchair-bound Artie and asks him out. Artie initially goes reluctantly to avoid hurting her feelings but discovers that he actually enjoys spending time with Becky. Things get sticky when Becky decides that she wants to go all the way with Artie but he doesn’t feel the same way.
Sue gives Artie good advice (kudos!) by saying that if he doesn’t want to go out with Becky again, he should treat her like a regular person and tell her. She points out that Becky just wants to be treated like everyone else, and Artie of all people should know that.
Artie tells Becky that while he enjoys her company, he’s not ready to move into a physical relationship, and then she and Sue watch Lifetime and share a pint of ice cream. Normal girlness achieved.
Before we get back to the military bashing, let’s take a minute to talk about Will Schuester and his OCD girlfriend Emma. Their relationship has gotten to the point where they’re thinking about marriage, so Will goes to Emma’s parents to ask for her hand.
Let me interject here to mention that in past episodes, Emma’s parents have been portrayed as insane racists, keeping their distance from non-gingers. That’s right; they can’t stand associating with people that don’t have red hair. Moving on.
Emma’s crazy parents come over, and her mom makes a comment about the Christmas tree still being up. “Just be grateful comrade Obama still allows Christmas,” responds Dad. Because, of course, the anti-Obama characters are the ones that are cracked in the head. Whatever.
Emma’s parents don’t give their blessing (probably because Will isn’t a redhead) and begin to nitpick her OCD flaws. Again, anyone that would oppose Obama is the same type of person that would viciously criticize his or her own child.
Despite the lack of blessing, Will proposes to Emma with much fanfare, and she accepts. Squeee! I love weddings, especially musical ones.
Now let’s talk about the military thing, which is a big issue for me because I think our armed forces are freaking amazing, and I thank God every single day for the brave men and women that serve in order to keep my family safe from the bad guys.
I already mentioned Finn’s confession to his teacher that he was considering joining the army. The next time the subject was broached on the show was during an intervention set up by said teacher with Finn’s mom and stepdad. Finn says that he just wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps, who he had been led to believe died a hero in Iraq a decade earlier.
Finn’s mom reveals that his dad didn’t die in Iraq as a war hero but in Cincinnati as a drug addict. Apparently he had been dishonorably discharged and was so traumatized by the war that he couldn’t get his act together. She had lied to Finn all those years because his dad “was so much more than the last few months of his life.”
This part bugged the crud out of me. I will not deny that war is hell or that PTSD is a real thing, because both of those things are true. But “Glee” wasn’t tackling the issue of how to help veterans return to normal life. The only message seemed to be: join the military and your life will be ruined.
And then the episode ended with Finn proposing to his girlfriend Rachel.
Yes, they’re both high schoolers.
I can’t wait to see what happens as the rest of the season unfolds…

Hasn't this show been cancelled yet?
When we cut cable and decided to watch shows online, this was one of the shows that somehow got away from us.
Reading this post tells me it's better that way. Love the music, hate the politics. Buh-bye, Glee.
Patience grasshopper.
i don't watch glee but i occasionally read recaps and check out spoilers so i do have a vague since of what was going on in the episode. i think my biggest problem with the army part of this episode was the teacher staging an intervention as if joining the army is the worst decision you could ever make. my cousin is high school senior and the summer before her senior year she told her family that she was thinking of joining the military. she was met with cries of joy and support. i will admit that my family has a great since of civic pride and joining the military is part of that-my husband is a weekend warrior-my sister is a jag lawyer, my parents met in the army, i have countless aunts, uncles, and cousins who were in the military. my cousin was smart enough to realize that if she went to college now, she would probably drop out within the first semester because she doesn't have the discipline-yet. she is hoping that the military will help with this. thoughts of going into the military should not be met with an intervention but with support. the military is a great alternative to college and also is a great way to show how much you love this country.
If a viewer of Glee is going to be put off from joining the military by its bashing, I can only say, "SUPERDOOPER and FANTABULOUS!"
I think the service isn't going to be hurt at all, that said viewer is going to decide instead to pursue their dreams in Broadway Musicals, Fashion Design, or working with the Democratic Party.
A know a high schooler here in Los Angeles, he has to watch all the Michael Moore films… in class… with his all hispanic classmates… and hispanic teacher… Democrats.
Wow, you couldnt PAY me anough to watch this utter crap! I KNEW what this show would be like even BEFORE it came on the air. What I DIDNT know is how left-winged and wacky it would truly be. But what else can you expect from Ryan "Nip/Tuck" Murphy?
Glee….the Cleveland Steamer on the chest of society.
Ryan Murphy is the ultimate hypocrite.
He sanctimoniously condemns Christians, conservatives or anyone to the right of Mao for being "judgemental".
These idiots just can't stop themselves, can they?
I have a puppy with more self-controll.
Hasn't this recap been cancelled yet?
Or can we please have a weekly recap of "Ghost Hunters"? More intellectually honest and respectful than this dreck.
The leftist writers of Glee hate the military? Color me shocked!
But on the other hand Justified also came back last night and so far there is a great new villain, Raylan is still the man even when wounded, two bad guys get shot (one particularly nasty hit man especially gets it), one weasel of a women got shot, pot thieves got bad news and the main rival has hatched a new plan and it starts with going to jail.
So I think I will stick with the show where good guys carry guns and shoot bad guys because they deserve it. Oh yeah, and there is almost no singing……….
The Becky plotline played out as an unintended criticism of the liberal cult of self esteem. For the first time we get to hear what goes on in Becky's head and her self assessment is to put it mildly, unrealistically optimistic. Which is first funny and towards the end a little tragic.
You know you are not supposed to draw any conclusions from that.
Politics of that the POS ryan murphy aside, I really can't stand tv shows where they do modernized covers of older songs. I was really happy to hear Dave Grohl basically tell ryan murphy to f**k off when he got mad that Foo Fighters didn't allow their songs on Glee. I don't blame them, they make enough money themselves that they don't need to have their music b**tardized by the people on that show.
Call it market intelligence, Rob. Know thy enemy.
I just….don't understand the point of these blog posts. Why are you doing this Jenny? That show sucks on steroids, and nobody cares anyway.
Junk. As it continues to attack and alienate half the audience, the rating shrink and the influence will fade. About one more season for this dribble before the botton falls out.
War is hell and that's the truth but the greatest generation fought two wars against incredible evil…at the same time…and prevailed. They came home and built America into an even greater country than the one they left to go to war. They are most worthy of respect and honor because they had the mental toughness to go through hell and come out the other side better for it. Or perhaps they were already better men and women?
The horrors of war may have changed in their manifestations but war is war, that has never changed. What has changed is the quality of the people fighting them. Not for the better.
I sympathize for all the men and women who fight and I know some of them are on a par with the greatest generation, but sadly many more succumb to the weaknesses that our crumbling society seems intent on instilling in them.
Ah, a show about the liberal arts that slams evcerything conservative.
Poster child for defunding NPR, NEA, etc.
Let the liberal arts live or die in these financial times.
Based on their own merit.
*Sigh* The Bear crapped in the woods again.
Oy, are you SO right-this goofball is off his rocker, as his shows reflect upon him!
So Artie decides to treat this girl like a "normal person" and actually *tell* her he doesn't want to see her anymore? Gosh, there must not be many normal people left, because I've been in the dating game for years and I'm "lucky" if someone bothers to say anything to that effect, rather than simply delete me from their phone and avoid all contact/communication. Gotta love the internet generation…
Haven't watched the show since the end of the first season. The funniest bit for me was when Coach Sue referred to OCD Emma as a "bush baby" (because of Emma's perpetual wide-eyed stare). I still say that the Rachel character is the type of date that would have a guy frantically signalling for the check after spending 20 minutes at a table with her in a restaurant.
I'm afraid to ask what a "Cleveland steamer" is.
I've never watched "Glee" but I do watch a lot of the Military History Channel. I'm trying to imagine the cast defending a foxhole in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. Now THAT would be entertainment.
Why. Is this crap. On the air.
Why.
Seriously, why?
Toxic America-hatred isn't even being cloaked anymore. It is being waved around like a flag. Like the stars and stripes they despise the very sight of.
This kind of programming would have been unimaginable even 20 years ago.
Walter, there are Documentaries about proportional numbers of soldiers suffering from PTSD going back to the Civil War. A recent HBO Documentary comes to mind, but even Homer in the Iliad describes Achilles nightmares in a vivid picture that any veteran can recognize. You fail to recognize that humanity is tied to its frailties which are part and parcel of the whole. PTSD in WWI was called Shell Shock. In WWII it was battle fatigue. Some soldiers are more affected than others, but everybody changes to some degree. You can only judge by walking in that man's shoes for the time it took him to change. Think about it.
I've never had the pleasure to view this leftist propaganda excrement that passes for a TV show.
PTSD is a very serious issue, and while not something that should be ignored in popular culture, is something that should be treated with respect. Using it a vehicle for a cheap plot twist is just unseemly. I don't watch Glee anymore. I don't get as wound up about it as some of the people here, but I think their writing has gotten lazy and that they wrap themselves in a PC flag to ostensibly “confront” prejudices, but really at the end of the day it just ends up being cheap shots at conservatives.
A show by poofters about poofters for poofters, all who hate America.
I am sure glad you watch this **** so I don't have to.
My liberal jerk friends watch that awful show.
You watch this crap?
I don't understand the posts either. Jenny must be Breitbart's niece or something.
I wonder how many of them would (a) get their thumbs caught in the bolts of their M-1 Garands or (b) get blown up while trying to throw a grenade?
some tv show i don't watch, now i have no need to try it at all.
Here it is: Cleveland Steamer
Beware, some things cannot be un-read.
I absolve myself of any mental images that may result from reading the definition.
I work in an arthouse movie theater. All my payed coworkers are old gay men. All my volunteer coworkers are young women. The only thing they all have in common is that they all watch Glee religiously. 45 minutes of my time once a week so that I know what the hell they are talking about the first two days after each broadcast.
A show written by, staring and about sodom-ites.
Not a family show,.
the things we do to get along with coworkers… lol
Understandable. Perfectly understandable.
the tenth plank on soviet manifesto is the public school system.
A bunch of sanctimonious, immature, hypocritical liberal crybabies. And the characters ON the show are just as bad.
Jenny, no offense meant..BUT anyonne who watches more than commercials of "GLEE" that Fox forces in between REAL programs..NEEDS THEIR HEAD EXAMINED
Yuck!! I didn't think it was a steamship that plies the Great Lakes. Thank goodness I have a supply of brain bleach handy, and thanks for both the definition and the warning.
More thumbs up….
I think it was a toilet bowl cleaner commercial whose theme was "We do the job, so you don't have toooooooo".
I'm glad I know the excrement coming from this cesspool of a show without having to watch it – you can't refute what you don't know…
I HATE HATE HATE Glee.
"Now let’s talk about the military thing, which is a big issue for me because I think our armed forces are freaking amazing, and I thank God every single day for the brave men and women that serve in order to keep my family safe from the bad guys."
Jenny,
The reason this horrible, anti-military show is still on the air is… YOU.
You are their audience.
YOU are the problem.
You are a hypocrite to claim that you love your soldiers and thank God for them every night, and in the same article breathlessly claim that you can't wait to see the next episode of this filth.
You are helping them defame our brave military.
Unless you stop watching, you are aiding the enemy.
Eeesch… sounds awful.
Glee is the worst show on Fox. Glee is a Militant Hateful Anti-American Anti-Conservative Gay Hollywood Intolerant Liberal Crapfest. How times does this show bash Sarah Palin. Between this garbage and the hate spewed by trio of Seth MacFarlane shows Rupert Murdoch proves he is Not a Conservative. These shows don't even get great ratings. The hate towards Conservative Women and now the hate towards our military is disgraceful. This is the kind of garbage you would expect from deranged degenerate liberal scumbags.
God forbid these subversive leftist a-holes ever protray a REAL military family – like mine.
My father didn't serve in the U.S. Army for 25 years because he couldn't find a "real job"; he joined for the same reason I wanted to join – it's an honor to serve and protect your nation (although I never did – much to my shame) and is very often a family tradition.
My father went to Yale where he met my beautiful mother, got an advanced degree, never did drugs, never had PTSD (despite seeing lots of combat in Vietnam), never hit my mother and he made a very respectable 100k~ a year income near the end of his military career.
The truth is, we had a great life.
Now I know that my father made more money because he was a Commissioned Officer, but so what? There's lots of Commissioned Officers in our military. Why shouldn't that be a career that we encourage in America?
And even the "grunts" actually make quite decent coin (if you stay in). 50k~ a year is nothing to sneeze at. If your wife also works, it's a very decent combined family income. It's certainly enough to afford a nice home, 2 cars, pay the bills and live a normal middle class life.I grew up with several kids who had this sort of family arrangement and they seemed perfectly well off to me… *shrug*
I know it's become fashionable to protray all military families as constantly struggling in order to try and amplify their sacrifice (or if you're a leftist, to protray our soldiers as losers…), but truth be told, I never saw any of that (not to say young soldiers or military families with stay-at-home moms don't struggle with money). But honestly, all of the military families that I PERSONALLY knew ALL had quite a pleasent and I'd even say a CUSHY lifestyle.
And you can't put a price tag on how PROUD I was when my father would come home from work at the Pentagon in his uniform when I was kid. I can't even begin to describe how much pride I felt for my father due to his military career. That's something these idiots will NEVER understand – and I honestly pity them for it.
My father also has a plaque with a piece of the Berlin Wall on it in his office – which every time I see it reminds me of the role he and other American veterans played in defeating tyranical left-wing socialism during the Cold War. I guess it must really pain these commi-sympathizers in Hollywood that their side lost because veterans like my father wouldn't let them expand the Marxist empire to the West…
And speaking of weddings… has any of these anti-military liberal douchebags ever been to an actual military wedding? I have. It's a glorious thing full of pomp, pageantry, patriotism and charming rituals – in other words, it's PERFECT for the screen.
It doesn't get more romantic than a Soldier in full dress uniform walking his bride down the aisle under an arch of ceremonial sabres. It's the closest thing you can get to a royal wedding for normal people. And what girl doesn't want that?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtLKBCeadTc
But something tells me we'll never see one on "Glee"…
Her parents are worse than your recap mentioned. Not only are they ginger supremacists, but their overbearing and brow-beating parenting is implied to be the reason Emma is so screwed up.
They're also morons. The mother got upset because she was convinced that the chamomile tea Will served wasn't "decaf". All chamomile tea by its very nature is decaf. You would have to specifically add caffeine for it to be otherwise.
Big Hollywood has space devoted to "Glee"?
