A Thief in the Night: Veterans’ Land Grab

Did you ever have an encounter with a thief? If not, how many times have you read or heard about their sudden attacks in newspapers or TV and thought or gasped, “I hope that never happens to me”?
Well, it is happening. As I write this, we have politicians all over the country stealing from us. Many of you are now more than aware of this new Cap and Trade bill brought to us by “our” representative in the 30th district of California, Mr. Henry Waxman. Well, you may also want to know that Mr. Waxman has been quite busy these days not only promoting the biggest tax in history, but also by helping to give away land he does not own.
Whose land?
The land of our revered Veterans.
This land is slowly being doled out to special interest groups that benefit Mr. Waxman and his friends who are known as the “Westside Political Machine.” Sadly, he is not the only one doing this; politicians all over the country are “giving” land they do not own to special interest groups. Eighty-five acres of Veterans’ lands were just annexed in Chicago. Where did it go to? Who got it?
In order to get the big picture of what’s happening all over this country, let’s start with a little history on the Veteran land here in Waxman’s Los Angeles district.
Veteran land is land deeded to Veterans to take care of their physical and emotional wounds. One of these lands, the West Los Angeles Veterans’ Home (WLA VA), the largest parcel on land for Veterans in the USA, was donated by Arcadia de Baker and John P. Jones in 1888 to the government for the sole purpose of providing permanent care to our Veterans ONLY.
At that time, the hospitals on the land were providing care to returning Civil War Veterans, and to emphasize the intensity of their suffering they were called asylums. What Arcadia de Baker realized was that the peaceful and isolated land was perfect for healing the physical and emotional wounds of people who served their country.
What Arcadia de Baker did not know, though, that in time this isolated land would end up in the middle of one of the most affluent areas of the country. The WLA VA is the largest Veterans Healthcare Center in the Untied States. It also just happens to be located in an area considered the Fifth Ave of California, a place with multi-million dollar mansions and fancy condos surrounding it. Being a piece of prime real estate, many are vying for it.
In Henry Waxman’s Brentwood district, homeless Veterans sleep outside the gates of their own land while TV productions rent empty hospitals that neither the VA nor Waxman will open for our Veterans claiming the buildings are damaged. Yet, these same damaged buildings are rented to “Grey’s Anatomy,” among others, and net seven-million per year. Now, would anyone rent damaged buildings for seven million a year?
Recently, the WLA VAMC gave Veterans Park Conservancy (VPC) (a non-veteran group consisting of wealthy residents of Brentwood) $1 million to help build a wrought iron fence to beautify the entryway into their community, while Veteran health-care services and facilities continue to go under-funded. Was the beautification of an already very wealthy community a priority?
The WLA VAMC also gave VPC permission to engrave in stone on Veterans property, “Beauty, Honor, County,” thereby seriously insulting and denigrating the Military creed of “Duty, Honor, Country.”
The VA also “rents” this land for special fundraising parties. I was recently at one such $1000-per-ticket celebrity-saturated fundraiser with a Vietnam-era Veteran, Robert Rosebrock.
Mr. Rosebrock, founder of “Veterans’ Revolution,” was not allowed to enter the Veterans’ land and was harassed by a hired security guard who kept a camera on him the whole time.
For 72 consecutive Sundays, Mr. Rosebrock and Veterans from all wars gather in front of the WLA VH to protest the land grab perpetrated by the VA and federal politicians in conjunction with affluent Brentwood neighborhood community organizations, businesses and Mr. Waxman’s Westside political machine.
In this shameful orchestration, the VA rented about 16 acres of Veterans’ land (worth more than a billion dollars) for a dollar per year to the Brentwood Homeowners Association. Yes, you heard me right, a buck a year. Why, you ask? So the people of Brentwood, some of the wealthiest in the country, can have a park. A park on Veterans’ land when there are empty hospitals our Veterans need!
Another game being played by the LA bureaucrats is the building of “apartments” at the cost of about $325,000 per unit in the unused hospitals that they now rent for TV productions at the Sepulveda VA. These very expensive so-called “apartments” are meant to house recovering addicts, etc. They say some Veterans can live there (this is really generous of them, isn’t it?), but the truth is these apartments will end up being fancy condos sold for millions in a few years.
In accordance with the Flag Code of the United States, the Veterans decided to turn the flag upside down as a sign of distress. In return, the federal police almost arrested them for “disturbing” conduct! Domestic terrorists like Bill Ayers can stomp the flag, anarchists can burn flags on the steps of the Congress, paint flags, rip flags, put flags in dung and call it art — but Veterans who fought for what the flag represents cannot, in accordance with the law, hang the flag upside down as a call of distress? Last week Mr. Robert Rosebrock was cited for having the American flag in distress attached to the Veterans gate, yet, the VA allowed the Iranian flag to be displayed on the Veterans gates!
Something is very wrong with this picture in America. Right now in history we have a group of renegade politicians who have buried our Constitution under the structure of false laws that we must abide by, “laws” that allow them to steal in the dead of night. And make no mistake about it: if they can steal our Veterans’ land without blinking an eye, they will soon be able to steal yours.
These “thieves” work on people’s minds, making them believe they are spotless individuals who do no wrong. Their abuse is silent and “lawful.” It is always for “our good.”
Our Founders fought a long battle to give us freedom and we cannot let anyone steal it from us. The first stand is with our Veterans to stop this land grab. Call your representatives, write your senators, demonstrate with your fellow Veterans, and do not allow this to go on any longer. In many ways, their land is your land — for without these good people freedom would be just a word.

Thank you for the post. Please correct the spelling of "thief" in your headline type, before some knucklehead uses it as an excuse to disregard or belittle the actual content and author. I have seen similar behavior on a smaller scale here in New York.
The people who would do this, who would so profoundly brush aside, disrespect, and disenfranchise those who have served, for such vulgar reasons deserve to hang as far as I'm concerned.
For this alone, Waxman is a disgusting sleazebag. Get rid of him and tell him to go get a real job.

I agree that what is being done to the veterans in this case is troubling but what I want to comment on is the part in Ms. DiCarlo's bio where she says she often gets into debates while standing in line for coffee in Studio City, Ca when people say bad things about her country. All I have to say is – You go Jeani DiCarlo!!!

The behavior of the current occupants of the White House and Congress more and more are reminiscent of the behaviors of the former occupants of Versailles and the Forbidden City. They no longer seem to touch reality anywhere.

What is difficult fo me to understand is how this is not illegal. It should be under Mis-Use of Public Funds or Property. The Land should revert to the original estate if the conditions of the will or not met. I imagine after all this time that estate would have so many hiers that probate would become impossible.
I say vote "ALL THE BUMS OUT" repeat as necessary until Washington and Politicians get the message. This story just confirms that the Professional Political Class in this country need to be removed from office as quickly as possible.

It is generally a good idea for a columnist to check his or her column and do the commenters the courtesy of an occasional reply. Otherwise, it tends to look like the author is too important to pay attention the the readers who have taken the time to comment. About two hours ago, I see that Space_Commando courteously pointed out a rather large spelling error in the title so that trolls couldn't denigrate the content by pointing out the error. I think it is poor policy to ignore the suggestion of a loyal reader who is attempting to strengthen the author's post. In fact, I think it's a bit rude. Thus far, the error hasn't been corrected. It's glaring, and it's amateurish.
That said, I consider the article itself to be a very important topic to cover. While the Obama administration blithers on about how Bush ignored the veterans, one of his own favorite America-haters is assisting in the destruction of historical sites devoted to the well-being of those very veterans. This is nothing short of an American shame.

And if you've read any of the comments I've been making on this site since it started, the last word you would ever use to describe what I've written is "liberal."
Your attempts at snarky humor fell completely flat. A pleasant suggestion to an author isn't even close to an attack. In fact, it wasn't even a criticism. I'm fairly sure that it wasn't a spelling error at all–more likely it was a simple typographical error. But come on, a writer has to be an English professor to know the difference between thief and theif? We were trying to make a good post a little better. Mea culpa.
And as long as you bring it up–what spelling errors are contained in the Constitution? There are some archaic spellings, but they weren't writing in 2009. So in the future, kindly save your nastiness for people who disagree with the author's premise, and learn to understand that a gentle correction that helps deflect illegitmate criticism is not a personal attack, nor an attack on the substance of the article.

I think the correct term would be "surviving" Civil War veterans. I agree with Lawhawk, this kind of attention to detail, or lack thereof, does reflect on the credibility of the author.
Hawk: Are you seeing those black helicopters again? I'm guessing Space Commando and you actually only saw a spelling mistake, and tried to get the author to correct it. I don't know about you, but I've seen article after article on conservative sites talking about "creative spelling" and "ebonics" and their negative effects on the English language. It sort of looks as if your buddies like creative spelling, and think that it has no effect on the way people view a writer. You got your point across, so who cares about spelling? I'm also guessing they are not much on ebonics though.
When ever I see articles that need to passed along I post it to myspace and facebook, the more people we reach with articles like this the better.

Your article itself was excellent, and anyone with any decency or sense of patriotism should be appalled at the treatment of those vets. The editors should be protecting you from typographical errors (God knows, we all make them), but I know it was all good faith error. The more impassioned we are when writing, the more likely we are to make that kind of error, and you were very passionate. Keep up the great crusade.

Thanks for telling us about this. I seriously hope by election day 2010 the vast majority of Americans vote to throw thieves like Waxman out of office, whether they be in the US House of Reps, the US Senate or state legislatures and assemblies. We'll have a great country again once we get rid of the politicians who seek office only to fill their own pockets.

I do not know how BH works but the titles in Newspapers are done not by the writer but the editor. I saw what you devoted to the writer and to the veterans. To say my humor fell flat, my only response can only be What's News about that I miss most of the time on subject and humor. There are few greats around here and you are one of them.

The left keeps doing things like this, they use eminent domain to take land for shopping malls, they use government for there own schemes to enrich themselves such as Franklin Reines with Fannie Mae. When it blows up they blame Wall Street for what is clearly the government's missteps.
That they would take this land from Veterans clearly does not surprise me. It occurs to me that the media monopoly they have put in place since the FDR days is repsonsible for this. Perhaps should we ever regain the congress we shouild write laws to favor local TV stations. Give them rights to post content not just on their own but from other providers as well. This would mean outlawing exclusive contracts of networks as monopolistic. We need a free press and we don't have it. Which is why other than Fox news this story would not be run. Just thnking aloud!

I guess I need to meet some people on Sunday and start standing with them before they turn the National Cemetery on the other side of the freeway into a "Veterans Park Conservancy". Hey, Jeani: There's no justice. I grew up in a conservative town in a conservative era. My teachers were strict and exacting. So naturally I thought they were fascists (and I didn't even know what that word meant). Today, babies emerge from the womb better-educated than the teachers they will suffer under for the next twelve to twenty years. But as several commenters here said, your ideas are more important than spelling. And you definitely have the right ideas.
There is an ObamaCare remedy for toothaches. Two aspirin and any Obama speech. I used it, and within minutes of starting his speech my eyes glazed over, my head went numb and then I fell asleep…………Go figure…….

In fact I have been contemplating the Trail of Tears and what segment of society will be the next to repeat history.. This is not just the plight of Vets, but that entire segment of society (primarily conservative) who are being labeled, categorized and dismissed en-mass by an elitist media (extremely dangerous) and government to boot (recipe for disaster). Instead of carrying blankets infected with small-pox, maybe we'll be carrying laptops and Ipods on our way to the reservations.. Hah!

The land was precisesly provided for the 'returning Civil War Veterans', since many California Westerners who participated in the Civil War stayed in the East and did not return, so much for speaking of detail, or lack thereof. And since we are turning this vital issue of the land theft into an English 101 class, I don't think there is any need to mention "surviving Veterans" since being a Veteran means that a person survived.
One thing is to mention a typo, the other thing is to get into these kind of unsubstantiated grammatical superiority contests. I am sure your command of language by far surpasses Jeani's
( and , of course mine) but I think what gives Jeani credibility on this subject is not perfecting her Pulitzer Prize winning skills but the fact that she is standing up for the Veterans, fights for them, shows up at their protests and risks her chances in Hollywood (it's not words) because she really cares and has a great and sincere heart. I know that because I see her do it everyday in spite of everything.
And I am sure you care too about the Veterans but you chose to doubt Jeanis' credibility, and that of the issue, because of a typo and an unsubstantiated argument. If you are local to LA , come on Sunday and show that you care and we can get over this… I can't promise a beerfest that's only for Harvard professors, like President Obama's friend, Mr Gates who writes Marxist propaganda in perfect and credible English.

Did you bother to actually read either of the suggestions from Space_Commando and LawhawkSF? And did you bother to read the comments on the rest of this thread, including the very nice exchange between Jeani and the others? Can you tell us what credibility of Jeani's anyone questioned? Or did you just feel that you had to hop into the beginning of a very long discussion and give your opinion without reading the whole exchange of ideas? What grammatical superiority contest? What does that even mean? If you're going to get into the world of political discussions, I think you had better develop a less itchy trigger finger and a little thicker skin. Only liberals expect to live in a world free of offense, and normally they are the only ones who go looking for offense where there isn't any.

It's not about a typo whcih is non issue and thanks to LawHawk who saw it. It's about turning the issue into finding mistakes where they don't even exist and getting into linguistics of whether it's 'returning' Veterans or"surviving" Veterans. Remember, I didn't start it. I read that as a more general attack. So I'll back off. I'm sure Old Tom can defend himself, but the way I read it, he wasn't attacking her credibility, he was merely observing that there are those who do not support the vets who would use it to attack her credibility. I guess sometimes we say things that in retrospect didn't come out exactly the way we expected. Another thing I discovered awhile back when I first came to this site, if I saw something that looked hinky, I first clicked on the person's ID to see what they had said in the past and who they might be. Old Tom is very conservative, and retired from the Air Force. He's a Reagan Republican. That doesn't sound like someone who would attack veterans benefits. Then I clicked on your ID, and see two people very committed to veterans and their well-being. I found it a little confusing at that point trying to fathom why you would be so negative toward a retired vet. It appears that there have been many missed subtleties all the way around.

I agree that sometimes things do not come out in a way they were intended. This is why we're having a debate to clarify. Now that we are clear on everyone's good intentions, I want to thank Old Tom for his service and if anyone thinks my words were harsh is because I thought that it was an attack to discredit the Veterans' fight.
Since nonone can argue the issue, the Veterans have been attakced on technical details and it seemed to be one of those attacks. Apparently it wasn't and I am thankful for it. We just have to be careful not to give more ammo to people who will run with it against this issue. Thank you.
OK…I used the term "surviving" as in, those who survived the 23 years from the end of the war in 1865 until 1888 when the land was granted for their provision. Not, as you perhaps too willfully inferred, those who survived the war. I won't retract my original statement, which was simply that an author needs to be careful of things like grammar, spelling, and word choice, because all of those things work together to convey an impression of credibility, or to detract from it.
As to my military service, I had a good life for the 32 years I spent with the Department of the Air Force, both military and civilian. I miss it and would go back tomorrow if they'd take my cranky old butt. There was no "sacrifice", and I don't ask anyone for anything except the benefits I earned. But thank you for your courtesy.
I currently work full time for the Dept. of Veterans' Affairs, so, yes, I do have some investment in caring for our vets.

Those of you who abhor Waxman's shameless efforts to take VA land should also know that website has a most definitely liberal-Democrat tone.I have read many biased articles on that site attacking conservative-Republican veterans. What gives? There are no conservatives and/or Republicans that served in our US Armed Forces? NOT.Although I laud Mr.Rosebrock's efforts to secure veterans land that could be used for veterans eg: homeless vets etc, I strongly disagree with his blog responses(Veteranstoday.com) that personally attack other vets who disagree with his methods: ie flying the US Flag upside down-disrespectful flag protocol. Because the VA has treated you with disrespect does not mean you should act likewise with our nation's flag. You can be a vet and also an irascible a-hole.
