Great post, Sue! My awakening began when a very liberal musician friend of mine suggested Rush (of whom I was not yet a fan, but a daily listener for "perspective" on the other side) should be banned from the airwaves. "Not very liberal of him" I thought. His fear caused me to question my opposition to Rush and to give his show a "closer look" as it were.

Liberals really need to get a grip on life. I don't want Big Government telling me what I can and can't do. I don't want Big Government taking away more and more of my liberty and freedom. I'm a minority being a black conservative male and I want all of Obama policies to FAIL.

No God in schools but children are allowed to sing praises to Obama. Have they forgotten what this country was built on? Our U.S. currency says In God We Trust not In Obama we trust. He lies constantly and I’m ashamed of all my black brothers and sisters who are ignorant to believe everything Obama say and does. Or simply don’t care because he looks like us. I’m sick to death of my people being taking for a ride by big Government. too many of us just don’t get it. we will never advance as long as you let someone else take care of you instead of striving to do better for yourself. when I heard those ladies on TV who are homeless and they were going to participate in the program to help them get a home. I was embarrassed by the words they spoke. how could they not know where the money was coming from? But as Rush said these women are model citizens in Obama utopia world.

If you've never heard "a single cogent argument", then you simply aren't looking. Open your eyes. You aren't even trying. Seriously. Yes, the ad hominem attacks are all that their critics focus on, which leaves people who don't actually listen to or read right-wing sources regularly with the impression that that's all they do. Let's just say that the best way to find out what one side of a political debate is really thinking or saying is not to trust the other side to tell you and point you to select examples.

Talk radio host Mark Levin's book "Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto" debuted at #1 on the New York Times best seller list, was #1 for at least a dozen weeks. Have you read it?

As for the popularity of ad hominem attacks, perhaps you should note Saul Alinky's "Rules for Radicals":

RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions.

Saul Alinksy was not a conservative talk radio host.
