Hero-Worship and God-Kings
by Jeremy D. BoreingGod-kings are not new on the stage of human history, nor do they exclusively occupy the dusty corners of the distant past. One need only look to the Japanese worship of Emperor Hirohito during World War II to see that an industrialized, modern country can still vest in its leaders supernatural authority. And there are far more subtle ways of making divinity out of men as well.
The Apostle Paul was warned two-thousand years ago that, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Certainly his intention was to illuminate to the self-righteous that they do not live up to an actual standard of perfection, but perhaps there is more. For as surely as a man might be blind to his own failings, there seems to be some propensity in man to be selectively blind to the failings of others as well. This selective blindness may have many causes and find many expressions. Some in our society carry cultural guilt and fear of accusations of bigotry that cause them to hold entire social, racial, and religious groups to different standards of judgment than others. Still, it is the elevation of individuals above common scrutiny that creates idols of men. Whether it is a rock-star or actor, sportsman or elected leader, holding any man above reproach is folly, for in ceding to anyone our power to critique them, we grant them power man was not meant to have.
Now, to some, this double standard of generosity may seem harmless enough. After all it might be argued that most people are far too judgmental as it is. However it is no less sinister to apply a positive double-standard than it is a negative one. Both of these biases have the same result on the individual making the unfair judgment – by limiting the individual’s ability to accurately see the humanity of the judged, they falsely color that individual’s understanding of the human condition in general. Just as the thoughtless demonization of any person renders them sub-human to the person making the judgment, and therefore their choices, actions, and motives are no longer subject to the same thoughtful consideration as those of others, Hero-Worship creates a blindness in which it is not necessary to consider the fundamental humanity of the so-called hero, nor is it necessary to emulate their actual virtues or accomplishments. After all, if Hitler is simply the most evil creature to ever live, why question the motives, politics, or persuasions by which his actual, human evil was allowed to thrive? Similarly, if a Martin Luther King, Jr. was simply better than everyone else by design, what point is there in attempting to follow his virtuous lead?
This power that hero-worship imbues in its champions is also a narcotic that dulls the mind of the worshiper, and allows and even promotes abuses by the worshiped.
Clearly, this is the case with the current President of the United States. With so many people seeing President Obama as a super-human, almost religious figure, and placing so many of their hopes on his shoulders, they blind themselves to the reality of the man, both his better qualities as well as his more troubling ones. Any accusation of wrong-doing or hubris is instantly and angrily rejected by the faithful as an attack on a man who is simply above petty criticism. He can do no wrong, and further, no one else can do the good that he might. He is, as Evan Thomas so aptly and honestly put it, “standing above the country, above the world, he’s sort of a God.” There is nothing more dangerous than this kind of isolation of a man from the restraining power of common criticism, especially one who by his office already has so much power over so many and so much. After all, if criticism is suppressed and virtues are seen as intrinsic and not attained or attainable, an elected leader doesn’t actually answer to the will of the people at all, rather, the people exist to validate his will.
For man to truly be free, he must reject elevating any human to super-human stations, reserving such worship exclusively for the truly divine. Christ may be perfect, but President Obama is only a man. A compelling case can be made that George Washington was one of the best men who has ever lived. The Indispensable Man, he twice surrendered his sword, and almost absolute power, to the new country he had bled to create when frankly most people would have preferred he kept it. But this same great man had great failings, not least of which were his somewhat nuanced views on human slavery.
If even a man with the moral fortitude of Washington did not escape the human condition, then what man could? I can say without shame that there is no public figure alive who I hold in higher esteem than I hold George W. Bush. I realize the cultural-correctness barons who have demonized him for the last eight years will recoil at the fact, but I would rather have some BBQ or sit on a fishing boat with 43 than meet a Beatle. He was true to his convictions, and he exuded a grace and good-will to his enemies even when beset on all sides by a recklessly hostile, slandering, hate-filled media and opposition. President Bush is as close as I have to a hero. But I am not fooled by my affection into believing he was superior to his mold. Despite the public claims of exuding calm, I have little doubt what was going through the president’s mind during those excruciating seven minutes in the school-house in Florida in 2001. Fear. We’re being attacked? Confusion. If we’re being attacked, why aren’t they pulling me out of here? Uncertainty. Am I supposed to be doing something or did I misunderstand? The sort of very human things any of us might have felt in that sort of situation. Would I have preferred that he sprung to his feet, strode to his jet, and took command of the war we did not yet know we were in? Sure. I would rather he hadn’t passed TARP, articulated conservative principles like Reagan, and defended himself against his hate-drunk critics too, but I don’t look for God-like perfection in human beings. Even Presidents. Especially Presidents. I have an actual God for that, so my admiration for Mr. Bush can survive exposure to his actual humanity expressly because it isn’t built on the false premise that he has none. It is respect, not worship, and it is a deep respect.
Because in application, worship is all a man requires to reign as a God. Hold one man to a more generous standard, bind him by a less restrictive set of rules than you do other men, and you give to him transcendent powers no matter what secular name you might call him by. If you make that man-God the leader of a country, then he is a God-King as surely as any who has gone before, and making a God-King of a man only makes slaves of the rest, no matter how he uses his authority or for what. This is what the idea of separation of Church and State was actually meant to protect us from, un-checked executives consolidating personal-religious powers. Let us direct our prayers elsewhere that we might have eyes to see this man as man.

I think the "God King's approval ratings will be coming down shortly. Happy Flag day to all!
Nobody thinks Obama's a god, it's just another whiny nonsense right wing fairytale.
"When a man stops believing in God, it's not that he believes in nothing, it's that he'll believe in anything"–your essay is a study in this truism. They make a god of O because they've lost the true God.
God doesn't exist man.
Very thoughtful piece. I am not sure that Mr. Obama has reached deity level yet but we certainly are experiencing something unique in the history of American civic life. My view is that Obama is our Louis XIV and that we (or at least our elites) are slipping into a 16th Century feudal mindset concerning his position in govenment and society. The "Sun King", like Mr. Obama, had a difficult early life but, once in power brooked no deviation from the courses he set. Loius built Versailles as a means of emasculating the feudal nobility and keeping them under watch. There, according to the Duke de Saint Simon (and other contemporaries) Louis was addicted to flattery and the adoration of his court. Today there is no need of Versailles since our elites have voluntarily become Mr. Obama's courtiers and compete in singing his praises. (I'm talking about you Evan Thomas.) It should also be remembered that Louis XIV left France bankrupt and in administrative chaos paving the way for what would become the French Revoluton.
Sorry. People like you who are not willing to have a civil discussion don't deserve a dignified response.
@ricky ross – in order to claim that anything does not exist, you would have to able to be at all places in all of being at the same time.
Whatever or whomever a person believes to be their own final, moral authority is, in fact, that person's god. For most on the Atheistic Left, their god is their own indivdual selves. And as they will not proclaim themselves to be "god" they project their desires onto any celebrity that has enough notoriety and agrees with their own self-designed morality. The Atheistic Left has such a thirst for the power to control the lives of others that they have now proclaimed Presdient Firefly to be, "sort of God." And it is worthwhile to note that there has not been a single peep from the State Sponsored Media that denies or even questions Evan Thomas' assertion. We are only left to believe that they believe Firefly to be divine too. After all, who would dare question "God"?
Gotta offer proof for critical analysis. Otherwise, back on the bus………………
Minus one for HuffPo fingerpainting..
He is, as Evan Thomas so aptly and honestly put it, “standing above the country, above the world, he’s sort of a God.”
For the record, you have misquoted Thomas. He did not say "he's sort of a god" He said "he's sort of God" A small point, but a huge difference.
Hey TJ, would you send me an e-mail @ shermansmarchblog@yahoo.com? I've got a question I'd like to ask you offline. Thanks.
"HuffPo fingerpainting"…..I love it, you old leatherneck you.
I love that you used a picture of Xerxes from 300 for this. I am reminded of the final scene of that movie, where the "God-King" gets grazed by a spear and sees, for the first time, I assume, his own blood and proof that he is not, in fact, divine. The look of devestation and astonishment on his face will probably be a match for the one on Obama's when he's replaced.
President Rufus T. Firefly! How apropos(!):
"No one's allowed to smoke,
or tell a dirty joke,
and whistling is forbidden.
If chewing gum is chewed,
the chewer is pursued,
and in the hoosegow hidden.
If any form of pleasure is exhibited,
report to me, and it shall be prohibited.
I'll put my foot down, so shall it be.
This is the land of the free!"
I guess that when Groucho sang that song in "Duck Soup" in 1933 (the last year of Prohibition), Americans were a bit more sensitive to nanny-state policies than they are today…
The deification of Obama has had an interesting trajectory. I'm not even sure the Left intended to turn him into a God figure– I'm not sure the Left plans anything out in advance. I think it's something that has built itself up from Oprah's proclaimation that he is the "One," and took on a life of itself after that. I don't know if the talking heads on the Left think that the public will be swayed by all the godly images and the Obama-is-God talk, but I think that's what this is really about. Manipulating the public into hero-worship so they don't question anything Obama does. But they are seriously overplaying their hand. Even the most hard-core kool-aid drinkers I know aren't that gullible. I think this kind of thing will just intensify the backlash.
One of the major slams that the atheistic left loves to use on Christians is how they think Christians always make excuses for God's non-intervention. Put simply, if he existed why is he not helping you? If the Obots do not worship his holy teleprompterness, how do you explain all the excuses? The dinosaur media doesn't question "the one". They, and all the sycophantic zombies, take it all as an "article of faith". Sound familiar?
Ditto!
You know, every time I see Obama, I flashback to this same shot from "300"!
Excellent article as well Jeremy! Excellent!
You should've gone further down the lyrics where Firefly says:
The last man nearly ruined this place,
He didn’t know what to do with it,
If you think this country’s bad off now,
Just wait ‘til I get through with it.
The country’s taxes must be fixed,
And I know what to do with it,
If you think you’re paying too much now,
Just wait ‘til I get through with it.
Does that not sound like the "Blame Bush" tactic and economic plan of Bammy or what?
http://shermansmarch.blogspot.com
Wish we could say the same for you.
Yes, very much like it…
BTW – good call, Dom!

Obama a God-King…LoL… Pride proceeds the Fall……Tiiimmmbbbeeerrr……BOOM!!!
On MSNBC, in reaction to Obama's Cairo speech, Newsweek editor Evan Thomas stated, "I mean in a way Obama’s standing above the country, above – above the world, he’s sort of god." So, yes, that's exactly how some people seem to be thinking about him, including those in the mainstream media.
The liberal fears freedom because with freedom requires independent thought, with independence comes potential “risks.” It to me is a truly terrible vision indeed, of free Americans panting in servitude to any government, it is as disgusting as it is un-American, and for what? This insidious spirit drain will in time leave impotent the incredible entrepreneurial engine that has propelled the US top of the heap of any country since the dawning of civilized man. Where logic is replaced with mind numbing liberal talking points …round-n-round… with unquestioned love of the hive, in complete devotion and servitude of government, and why? You can picture our devoted leftist waiting for instruction from Washington, this is why they need a God-king, or a ruler.

Very nice! Let’s hope it doesn’t devolve into the French Revolution.
Cool!
The distinction is important.

Sort of God . Your Right Bev it is a huge difference but not surprising. These Godless Hard – Lefties Worship at the Alter of the State. Those of us who learn from history know where that leads to and it's anything but Good. Good talking to you.
Just His Face?
Are you stating an absolute, Ricky? (Because I know liberals, especially the really 'smart' postmodern ones, deny there are any absolutes). And you just made an absolute.
Come back in about 20 years, after you've gone through a few hard knocks in life, and tell us what's going on then, okay? God might have resumed existence for you by that time. (I hope He touches you long before that, but some are real slow learners).
I don't think the left has deified Obama nearly as much as the right has Reagan. Media hyperbole doesn't necessarily translate to reality. (Lest we forget, Xerxes _won_ the battle depicted in 300…and we're still dealing with the Persians to this very day. The Spartans? Not so much. Hell, eventually a lot of other Greeks teamed up with the Persians _against_ Sparta because the Spartans were such @$$holes. Good movie, though.)
We judged Reagan by his accomplishments not his rhetoric. He was a great man. You are also mistaken about your history. Greece asked for Persia's help but ended up not needing it against the Spartans. Unfortunately for the Greeks, they had already given earth and water which meant fealty to Persia.
I just feel deifying any mortal is miguided, no matter how accomplished. Perhaps I wasn't eloquent, but we can agree that the rest of Greece (not so much a nation but an alliance of independent city states at the time, no?) _did_ eventually go to war _against_ Sparta…you tend not to do that against people you like.
If gods real, then kill yourself to go to paradise.
Yea the POTUS should stand below the country.
Lest we forget Bush actually "talked" to god. You my friends, are the true flip floppers. Your becoming what you hated most, whiny little babys.
There is nothing more amusing than grown adults who believe the world is controlled by an invisible man in the sky. It really shows the intelligence level we are dealing with here. They probably still believe in Santa Claus too. The only people talking about Gods walking the earth are the fringe right-wing religious loonies.
Amen bro.
Thank you Mr Boreing. Doesn't it make you wonder about the 69.5 million people who voted for him? It's frightening to see so many gullible people in one place at the same time. Although Obama hasn't yet been deified, I'm not sure anyone told him yet.
President Obama's fall from grace will be swift because the media & Obama has exploited the God imagery; no one can live up to such great expectations. Obama will sour when unemployment, taxes, & inflation remain high.
If anyone really listens to Obama, he contradicts himself or much of ideas just does not make sense. None. President Obama thinks everyone else outside his elite circle is plain stupid. The joke is on Obama.
Wow, that was powerful Auntie. You wrote that almost like you had an original thought, oh well. What did you get from Santa this year?
What did you get from god this year? Herpes?
300 sucks compared to sin city
Dom – i've tried emailing a couple different ways but must be doing something wrong cause it keeps failing. I'll keep trying.
Oh hey Ricky! No, how about you? What did you get from Santa?
Ricky you’re getting mad, you know you get nose bleeds when you get mad.
No, Rick, he should stand FOR this country and WITH this country and not ABOVE this country.
These trolls get easily provoked, don't they Stan? Testy buggers. I don't think they've been fed in awhile.
You write all those words and yet you still bake us no pie.
I'm not mad at all you silly gooses.
I got a fraggle stick car.
Late, great Bush talked to god, and god told him to go to war. Lest we forget such a noble and intelligent man.
That video is pointless. The only thing it really points out is that Obama did coke. I know everyone here is perfect, and has never made mistakes. God bless you all.
Since you evidently have never actually seen a religious person, let me explain something to you. I'll use little words so you can understand. Bush prayed. He was asking God for help and guidance. ("Guidance" means "showing him what to do.") That's a profoundly ("profoundly" means "rilly") humble act. He was not chatting with him as an equal.
Don't you have some homework to do?
Funny, Obama went to church. Still does, I understand. Does that mean he's a fringe right-wing religious loony? Or does it mean his whole life is a calculated lie? You tell me, O enlightened one.
I think he to in order to win.
he had to
"'I am driven with a mission from God'. God would tell me, 'George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan'. And I did. And then God would tell me 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq'. And I did."
Wow – incredible argument. I will stop going to church now. Seriously ricky – you sound like a college sophomore in a liberal arts program who has read something by Harris or Hitchens (ie – lowbrow atheism). Before you just dismiss God – why don't you try on some JP Moreland, Ravi Zacharias, William Lane Craig or Alvin Plantinga first? I'll bet money you have never read a serious argument for God's existence from our side. Since I am sure you think of yourself as an open-minded person you really should engage the other side.
In case some here do not recall, it was Barack Obama who said he "was the one we had been waiting for!" and he also said the seas would recede if he became POTUS. I was not so sure they were rising, or our coast lines were in danger, but these words for most who have read, or can read, well they sort of suggest a complex of sorts.
I think it could be a Richard III type complex combined with Mussolini and Stalin. Devious with a touch of dementia, and cold, very, very cold.
If you read his books, listen to his speeches, (unfortunately I have done both), and reflect upon them in historical terms, it looks like the dude has great love for himself not unlike say… Nero. There was a god just waiting to be released in those books, and whether the real author is Ayers or not; Obama reads the book as if he is a god in his own mind.
Our culture today turns all sorts into gods. At one time Brittany Spears was a goddess to young teenage boys, and girls. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie I am sure are looked at in this fashion for some. Heck, we worship John Wayne around here! But with Obama it is different. He likes the power and the trip he is on. From the Greek columns, ordering the pizza chef, the buzzing of New York, all the speeches made to date, trip to Paris, the arugula deal, jacking up the thermostat, (don't you dare touch yours!), martini nights on Wednesdays, NY date night, not meeting with our ally, the entire PM Brown ordeal, ipod to the Queen; I think you get the picture. He believes his own press because he acts it out on a daily basis. He is not suppose to want this job for power, and he is to act with humility. As mentioned in the article so eloquently, George Washington was made god-like by some, but he rejected such notions. There is a reason some people are worried Obama will never leave 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Ever heard of a fella called Napoleon?
So if our culture makes people gods, then it would follow the Left MSLSD types would do the same with Obama since he is such a cultish figure. I think the media is using Hollywood style tactics to convince the American public, and the world that Obama has the skills far above ours. They are acting like the studio heads of old who would push a star upon the public with great fanfare, and scheming.
As a kazillion others have said, this is all very Orwellian and Ayn Rand. And for some, who have also read the Bible, it is all very dangerous. For Obama, and his minions the most dangerous Biblical part is the Third Commandment, and it goes like this, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." In reality, it is a very dangerous commandment for us all isn't it. A god, or gods can be just about anything, and anyone can break this commandment. The object is not to break it, if you do ask for forgiveness, and for sure not to relish or savor your bad behavior. I am not quite sure this memo has made it to three-fourths of those in Washington. However, I for one am glad my god is the God who does forgive me upon request, is not cold, loves me, is compassionate, and while created arugula does not think it was the greatest because after all, he did create iceberg as well!
Dom, I feel sorry for the ones that have to clean up after them, All the drool and such.
ohhhh…that would be Conservative adults, not necessarily Republican.
I hate to even say it but, I have had the same, flash across my internal home theater and, it makes me ill.
try this one DomColangelo1957@aol.com
Auntie got pie Stan.
And 52 million peole in Iraq and Afghanistan no longer live under the yoke of tyranny. You twit.
So if you talk to God you're pious, but if God talks to you you're nuts? Ricky baby, if a person does not have less on they have……..MORON.
Above, below, wherever, as long as Obama stops squatting *on* the country.
You first.
Not "mad' as in angry, ricky.
"Mad" as in insane.
When a point over how stupid elitist statists have become can be gleaned from a Marx bros. movie, we are in serious trouble, boys and girls.
Bought it from Government Motors, did you?
You are confused.
The following is a short list of individuals/organizations that have described Mahatma Obama as deity…are they all right-wing religious loonies?
Evan Thomas
Louis Farrakhan
Dinesh Sharma
Daily Kos
The Detroit Free Press
Obama's Election campaign
Spike Lee
Jesse Jackson Jr.
and of course, the many statements by Obama himself.
If you talk to god you're no different then the taliban.
And I bet they love civil war.
Either your taking it out of context, or yes they are just as loonie as you.
The most interesting thing about this whole discussion, both Left and Right, is that the Left wants him to be God, the Deity they actively deny. Look at little peeny ricky and Aunty No-Pie. Got their nose right in the scrote, like the Dali-Bama did to the Kind of Saudi, looking for his contact.
The Right KNOWS he isn't God, but also knows the atheistic Left will shove him down our throats because we don't worship him, like, you know, they do, although God doesn't exist to them.
Fickle thing, Godhood. Make someone into one, and soon, they actually expect you to perform Miracles like one.
For Joe Six-Pack, when Hopey can't deliver on his Deified Miracles, they will pull down the Child Who Would Be God. Unfortunately, that will be an ugly process.
Oh, well, can't make omelets without breaking eggs.
I'll never believe in a big camera in the sky. But I am open minded, and spiritual. If your beliefs are based on love and compassion then I really wish you the best and I hope that it helps your life and the lives of those around you. If your an extremist in any part of the world, you are wrong IMO.
Unless the clean up consists of a fire hose, brillo pads and wire brushes, count me out. Of course, I was referring to the troll.
SUA SPONTE
What, you thought freedom was free?
Do a comparison for me, ricky little d***ey, how many were Saddam executing every year, in the endless war with Iran, and those he popped because they crossed the road in front of him.
How many were killed like that this year in the "civil war"?
Go ahead, we'll wait.
Oh you guys just dislike the new president, case closed.
What's to like?
compaired to bush even palin is smart.
Is it just me or is the quality of the trolls visiting this site really going downhill? I expected that Jeremy Boreing's article wouold attract some of the "Of course I'm smart, I'm an atheist" types but the level of their commentary is strictly second grade. My view is that any proponent of atheism has the responsbility to propose a plausible alternative to religion that can support a system of shared morals, ethics and societal norms. (So far I haven't found one.) Maybe the Left's fawning over Barack Obama and his supposed infallibility is their way of working out their own suppressed religious needs. After all, worship of God is the ultimate in Squaresville. Adulation of Obama provides the frission of true belief while bestowing automatic "cool" on the believer. Eric Hoffer nailed all of this down in "The True Believer."
Heh…do you have any idea what you just posted?
It's obvious from your posts and rhetoric that you are the product of an unholy miscegenation of hick and nerd. The American Psychiatric Association has recently recognized "Internet troll personality disorder " as a mental disorder. Perhaps Obama's health plan will cover ITPD in order for you to get the treatment you so justly deserve?
You didn't answer Dom's question.
Heh.
I'll say one thing for him – if this is evidence that Obama is capable of making so-called "conservatives" finally realize (in a roundabout way) the foolishness of mixing gods with politics in a modern era; then he must be rather special indeed
Do tell?
Because usually Reps use and abused peoples beliefs for votes.
Hey Ricky, isn’t it past your bedtime I know it’s past mine. What the hell are you talking about?
Bev,
It;s sort of because the designation is still tentative. In order to be declared a living God one must have a proclomation from the Senate. So I guess they are waiting on Frank's appointment to get the 60 to override a potential filibuster before they actually vote.
Can't we all get along, and converse like gentleman?
Sarah Palin was smart enough to take on the oil companies in Alaska (twice) and win (twice). The hatchet jobs that even the Associated Press were doing on her were so bad that the Anchorage Daily News (not exactly a pro-Palin paper) and Alaska Democrats jumped to her defense over the distortions in an Associated Press wire story on the gas pipeline ( http://www.adn.com/opinion/sarah-palin/story/5748... and http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/102908/loc_34... ) As for George W. Bush, he was smart enough to get elected as Governor of Texas (twice, including once against Ann "Poor George, he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth" Richards) and President (twice, including once after the Iraq was was going badly). And let's not forget CBS's hit piece using forged Texas Air National Guard papers. If you want to see really dumb, take a good look at Joe "Let's talk about secret bunkers with everyone" Biden, Obama's pick for VP. If you don't believe press bias plays a role, perhaps you still believe in the Tooth Fairy, too?
Right On! Great article.
If ye be your own God, ye also be your own demon.
Since when. Now think about this. Since when, is the president more important than the Country. You friggin jacka$$…..That's COUNTRY with capital C unlike your messiah with a small m. You have to live here. Or….well I guess you could, beat feet for the EU. Perhaps the Mideast is more your style. Go.
absolutely….!
Hick and nerd? Your a little criss crossed. People do deserve treatment if they need it.
OK team america. Go solve all the world problems. I'm very glad I don't live there. To answer your question I don't know how many people we're killed either way. I know a lot of americans we're to.
Spare someone a lot of pointless tedium and go hump yourself.
Totalitarian systems rely upon creating a cult of the leader as the opiate for the masses who are to blindly follow:
Il Duce; the Fuehrer; Comrade Stalin; Chairman Mao; The Perfect Leader Kim Il Sung; Dear Leader Kim Jong Il.
Maybe somebody can find a logical explanation for comments like Evan Thomas's "like a god" comment and Chris Matthew's tingly legs, but it's got me worried.

Ah, a statement of faith… against others who have different faiths.
Care to provide a source for that claim?
There is a lot to like. He got the damn republicans out. They only managed to start an unjust war and ruin the economy. Now someone has to clean the mess. He's putting the troops in Afghanistan were they belonged in the first place.
Yeah Barney Frank & Chris Dodd, well known Republicans.
Of course you don't find the artwork with the halos, which came from Obama supporters, and the people crying and fainting the least bit creepy, right?
You forgot "Mere Christianity" by Lewis.
Who shall be the "National Barber" and wouldn't you enjoy, if just for a moment, seeing Olby get a "haircut"?
I'll give you credit for persistence. Don't you have some cute girl(who adores Obama) to chat with online? Or are you a masochist? BTW, don't hurt yourself patting yourself on the back.
Everything is a cult
Ah. So you admit he's a completely amoral, cynical manipulator — and you fell for his game. Congratulations.
@Major Graham
There was an interview with the authors of "God is Back," a book explaining how modernizations leads to MORE religious belief, not less.
http://www.worldmag.com/articles/15473?CFID=41361...
This comment by co-author John Micklethwait about "New Atheists" like Hitchens is timely:
"You do not suddenly wake up in a panic about God being bad or terrible if you think you've already won the argument. If you went back 10 or 15 years, the idea that Richard Dawkins or Christopher Hitchens could write a bestseller on the subject would have seemed odd, because—certainly in Europe—most of the educated elites would have assumed that God was disappearing anyway, so what's the worry?"
(cont.)
Thus, "New Atheist" (i.e., militant atheist) attacks on religion, especially Christianity, is motivated by fear and confusion. The likes of Hitchens, Harris, etc. thought religion would go the way of the dodo. So, they're scared and baffled how the Netherlands, for example, is becoming more Muslim rather than the country causing Muslims to become atheist. If the Netherlands could embrace Islam, does that mean that Dawkins' homeland of the UK is next?
In short, atheism is the belief system that is in peril. And the New Atheists don't want to face this reality.
Jesus Christ exists. Allah doesn't.
Hence, Christians praying to God aren't wasting time since we'll get a response.
Like all Muslims, the Taliban really are wasting time by praying to Allah which makes their devotion all the more tragic.
@Trimegistus
Yeah, ricky ross is proving this part of the above post:
"Just as the thoughtless demonization of any person renders them sub-human to the person making the judgment, and therefore their choices, actions, and motives are no longer subject to the same thoughtful consideration as those of others, Hero-Worship creates a blindness in which it is not necessary to consider the fundamental humanity of the so-called hero, nor is it necessary to emulate their actual virtues or accomplishments.
This power that hero-worship imbues in its champions is also a narcotic that dulls the mind of the worshiper, and allows and even promotes abuses by the worshiped."
Video of Louis Farrakhan on Obama:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9cRpS5mSq0
Farrakhan says flat out that the President is the Messiah, i.e., God. So, the NOI leader is not being taken out of context.
Lets just hope our Leonidas's political spear throw is 3 inches more on target than the movie one was.
Joe Biden is life insurance for 0bama.
This is why one of my favorite songs from Schoolhouse Rock is "No More Kings" – a reminder why we broke away from England.
A rather juvenile comparison obviously, but so very to the point on particular matters. No king but God. And God will not be mocked. Obama WILL find that out one day.
"I just feel deifying any mortal is miguided, no matter how accomplished" Then you and conservatives are in agreement…I grew up during the Reagan years…so I think I can speak first hand when I say NEVER DID ANYONE raise Reagan to the level that the Left has tried to raise Obama….and STILL TODAY I NEVER hear anyone call Reagan a 'god'. Thats plain foolishness you're trying to promote. And a lie. Don't lie, joconde.
As for this kidn of thing just being a side-effect – Im sorry I no longer give teh Left any benefit of the doubt. Everything they do is deliberate…I will never say wise…just deliberate…and they MEAN to turn him into a god, because they ahve nothing else and they need it. They mean every bit of it…so therefore any backlash will be THEIR fault. I will blame them if this country is hit again. They WANT it to happen.
"Ricky Ross doesn't exist, angel." ~ God
Are you willing to go to a Muslim forum and say "Allah doesnt exist, man" ??? If not, then you are DEFINITELY a poser with no stones. Come back when youve grown some. Or at least borrowed some…I get the sense you wouldnt know how to hold onto them.
Actually, when dealing with the President, it's "O" cult.
You have got to be kidding mr.
Have you had any history lessons that weren't crammed into you in high school?
Look, I realize that Americans get fed garbage for history when it doesn't involve either England, the US or the leftist country du jour, but you're spouting junk that hasn't been relevant in historical thought since the 1970s.
Bad childhood? Obama was poor; Louis was actively hunted by people eager to take the throne. I guess that is the same–Obama's feelings got hurt, which is identical to having someone shoot at you.
But let's drop that and really start thinking. There is no way Obama is going to be a patron of the arts on the samer scale. Will he make rap popular? No, it's already there. Louis however made modern comedy, opera, ballet & dance into the forms still enjoyed today.
What great thinkers surround Obama? There's no Cassini or Bernini there, but we do get Joe Biden. Is Obama working with the very best people in the country, especially for foreign affaiors? Well, he does have Nancy Pelosi. She's definitely top drawer material.
Now, in case you slept in economics, you will recall that Louis plowed money into key industries, the ones which, at the time, were the most technologically advanced; and into industries with tremendous sappeal to the foreign market. At the time that was glass, mirrors, and textiles. Obama won't do that–he'd rather run GM into the ground. But someone learned that lesson–Japan. Or have you forgotten *why* Obama seized GM? Something about Japan putting money & expertise into key industries. Obama is dumping it into banks.
So let's take a different look, shall we? Obama won't write the first laws allowing women to form their own guilds and be free of male dominance, and he won't be the first to ban witch-burnings, either; Louis was able to do those first. Like Louis, though, he will encourage women's education. What he won't do is honor the men who served in the military by securing their future and guaranteeing them a new life if disabled by war. We have the VA for that, and they're a modern version of Louis' Invalides.
If you want to look at larger economics, Versailles was a tourist trap that generated a fortune in travellers visiting and copying it. It's closest modern equivalent is probably the space program, where thousands of highly-trained, specialized people worked. Oh yeah–Obama wants us out of space. Oh well!
And then there's gay rights. Louis fought endlessly with the Church and society in general over the treatment of gays, because his own brother was flamboyantly gay. How does Obama treat gays? They're bodies to vote for him, not humans to be treated as equals or whose rights need to be enforced.
Is Obama our Louis XIV? No. We're not that lucky.
