Bill Maher: Harmless
by Jimmy AroneWhile I’d be the first to admit I’m not quite Alan Alda, I like to think I’m still a feminist, in a Flintstone sort of way (read conservative).
Yeah, my wife would probably be the first one to tell you, I’m a caveman with heart. At the end of the day, however, I support women’s rights, especially when it comes to them being treated with respect.
On Monday, I wrote an article concerning Bill Maher’s recent attempt to one-up his friend, David Letterman, on the stupid ladder. During his opening monologue on his June 12 “Real Time” show, Maher took his shot at the Palin girls and later went on to state how he believed his pal’s jokes were “harmless.” A claim he continued to echo as recently as yesterday in an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN:
BLITZER: “Some of these domestic issues- we’re almost out of time, but a quick question. On David Letterman’s apology to Sarah Palin and her daughters- what do you think?”
MAHER: (Laughs) “I think it’s a real shame. David Letterman should not have had to apologize. You know, I‘ve known David Letterman a long time. We’ve all watched him a very long time. He’s a very fundamentally decent Midwesterner. It’s just not in his DNA to have said something that they’re accusing him of saying, and it just bothers me- the way some lie gets into the media- and then, it becomes the truth. Somehow, it became conventional wisdom now that David Letterman made a rape joke about a 14-year-old. I promise you, the 14-year-old was not in their minds. They made a joke about Alex Rodriguez, because he has a certain reputation as a player. Sarah Palin was at Yankee Stadium, where Alex Rodriguez plays. Her family is very fertile – her daughter did get impregnated before she was married. It was an easy and obvious joke to make. It was funny. It was not offensive in any way, and they made it sound like he said something completely different. So he’s apologizing for something he never meant, never thought, and never said. I‘ve been through this, Wolf. It stinks.”
Personally, I considered Letterman’s joke as being in poor taste. Maher’s joke, on the other hand, was disgusting and pissed me off. I’m all for free speech and I enjoy a good laugh as much as the next guy; however, these two were over the line. I say, from here on in, the children of politicians should be “off limits” on all sides.
Additionally in my article, I addressed the National Organization for Women coming forward and speaking out on the issue. The fact that NOW had made Letterman a part of their Media Hall of Shame, seemed a good thing. They agreed the joke was ‘ugly’ and went on to state:
Comedians in search of a laugh should really know better than to snicker about men having sex with teenage girls (or young women) less than half their age.
The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days — it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves.
Since David Letterman on Monday made a sincere apology to the Palins (which the Governor accepted), the case should now be closed.
So the question for NOW is, what about Bill Maher? If Letterman’s joke was ugly and worth a trip to the Media Hall of Shame, how do you explain Maher getting a pass? If Maher can’t make it into NOW’s Media Hall of Shame for his sexual jokes concerning a 14-year-old kid and a 62-year-old gap tooth comedian, while subsequently stating these types of jokes are “harmless,” then no one can.
I would only ask NOW to be consistent in dealing with those who continue attacking women, especially young women.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s a dead horse I need to put to rest.

It's beyond ridiculous how Letterman has actually turned into the victim here. That he was and is free to speak his mind is a given, but when you say something that ticks people off, you have to take your criticism. In a rational world, this incident would translate into offended people refusing to patronize his show. What happened was that he comes out a winner.
But as John Ziegler pointed out, NOW the media decides to take Palin at her word?
I acknowledge the potential for a disconnect between what he meant and what he said (since he and his writers apparently aren't a fact-oriented bunch), but A) ignorance is not an excuse, and B) that completely sidesteps the issue that the individual the joke was about automatically made the joke over the line.
Oh, and what gives about picking on the daughter of a failed VP candidate from seven months ago? Especially when you have the likes of Joe Biden, whose stupidity invites abuse.
The fact that Maher thought the "easy and obvious joke to make" was funny is sad. What happened to smart comedy? Regardless of the hype of the Letterman joke and whether or not it was appropriate, the easy low hanging fruit type jokes are for the untalented comedians. Had someone told these two that they would be defending such lazy joke writing and of such a lame topic (and arguably way out of date), i'd bet they would not have believed it. These guys have become hacks.

Nobody cares. Letterman's ratings are through the roof. You need to understand that you are the bad guys and nobody feels any "empathy" for you. Don't like it? Do something positive for society, otherwise get used to being rejected by the American public. Get used to having more shoes thrown at you and people having fun at your expense. I don't own a parrot, but if I did, I have to believe Maher's picture would make a great cage liner. There was a recent call at BH for a boycott of HBO because of Bill Maher. I wonder, if everyone who subscribes to HBO did actually cancel (even though most of us don't watch his show) what would be the impact on their bottom line. That actually is the part that ticks me off. Not only do these premium stations not give any opportunity for non-liberal programming, they openly parade their bias. Some people made a big deal out of Willow Palin appearing on the show with the old perv Letterman when he invited her and her mother. The misperception seemed to be that she needed to be kept away from his licentiousness. I submit that, should the young lady be anything like her mom, it would be the geezer who'd need the protection.

Playing the devil's advocate and assuming Maher's bromance with Letterman is warranted and assuming the joke really meant to make Rodriguez the butt why would he tie that to the Palins? That riff could have done much better and more sophisticated a dozen different ways. It was a horrible joke and Letterman, in retrospect, admitted it. Why would a comedian, a writer, and performer of standup with many awards and 40 years in the biz not recognize a horrible joke? Hmmm. Maybe Maher doesn't recognize good material either.

Maher said Letterman is "a very fundamentally decent Midwesterner". It's probably the only time in his life he ever said something nice about someone from fly over country.

Before you rip antifascist's head off, he makes one relevant observation: humor and ridicule can be weapons. One of the most impactful elements of the 2008 election was Tina Fey's impression of Palin. After Fey's impression was broadcast and rebroadcast and shared on YouTube, it was impossible for people (uninformed people) to take Palin seriously.
There was no defense against Fey's attack. Conveying an utter inability to take an opponent seriously does not make for a good intellectual discussion, but it can be a politically devastating blow.
By pinpointing Palin, characterizing her as a simpleton, and then relentlessly repeating that, Fey (and others) pushed Palin "off the table." As Steven Crowder pointed out on BH yesterday, Reagan's humor had a similar effect. He did the same thing to Communism, utterly delegitimizing it in the minds of the people. When you can't even take something seriously, it's not an option.
Sometimes even whores like antifascist and Bill Maher are right, even a broken whore is right. . . oh never mind.
That may be the first time Maher has used those words to describe someone who is not a Christian conservative. I seriously doubt Maher knows what a "fundamentally decent Midwesterner" is.

Goebbels would have stood up and applauded. Every time Americans saw Sarah Palin on TV, all they could think — and it's probably all they still can think — was "I can see Russia from my house!"
The thing is, Maher is far enough out of the mainstream, and on a cable channel. So nobody will even notice him. Incidentally this is why he's so angry all the time – he's always trying to one-up the latest scandal to get people to notice him, and he always ends up back in his apartment huffing on that bong and getting just a little more bitter.

Just another example of Liberal open-mindedness and respect for other people's feelings. I seem to remember alot of outrage whenever anyone had anything to say about Chelsea Clinton. The same rules should apply here.
As for Maher appearing on CNN and their spin on the situation, no one should be surprised by that. I love their new commercial, by the way, trying to convince us all that they're not taking political sides or stifling opposing view points. They must be feeling like the dog that went poo on the carpet these days.
Very very good point. I actually think part of the reason Palin is coming out so strong on this is because the media created a caricature of her during the campaign and I think she's trying to re-create herself publicly. She's way smarter than people give her credit for and I think she's starting the process now of laying the foundations of a future, bigger political career. She's doesn't have to operate under the rules of the McCain campaign any more and I think we're going to see a very different Sarah emerge as time goes on. A much more outspoken one.

This is Maher doing the same thing he did after Sept. 11. Even as liberal as Letterman has become, you knew both he and Leno were going to do serious openings in their first shows back after the attacks, and you knew over on ABC that Maher was going to come out with some sort of contrarian bloviating in order to make sure everyone noticed Bill Maher.
That's the way he was then, and that's the way he is now. His only redeeming quality is at least he has some sort of courage of his leftist convictions by going after Obama last Friday on both his HBO show and in an L.A. Times op-ed. If he got his way the economy would be even worse than it is now, but he was willing to call Barack out for not being left enough, unlike others like Letterman who don't want to criticize him for fear of damaging The Cause.

I meet Mr. Maher once , he had extremely bad breath, perhaps he had bleeding gums , he was talking about something. I had to walk away. I could not stand the smell of his breath. Arrrrg, I know! The worst part of all is that Palin didn't even say that! We got to a point during the election where the Fey clip was being passed around as actual news, with the result that even Barbara Walters thought Palin actually said that.

So, for the coming elections, we as conservatives have to come up with strategies to counteract their negative (but humorous) attacks on Sarah and other conservative candidates. Should we use humor in our campaigns against them? I'd say yes – perhaps combining the two – as in the best defense is a good offense.
I'd say take support where we can find it. Perhaps positive reinforcement is warranted here – show NOW that we don't have the same knee-jerk reactions that they usually have when it comes to all things conservative. A pat on the back and exhortation to keep on the right track could serve to start eliminating the polarization that we've all degenerated into, particularly on moral issues. I'd say that we can agree to disagree on politics, but we should try to keep politics and morality separate, and that in cases like these there are things that just shouldn't be said, even though they (by law) can be said.

It's not that we need NOW's validation of anything (other than the affirmation of using deodorant). It's that they normally do NOT defend women who are conservative. Look how they handled the skewering of Paula Jones, Juanita Rodderick, et al., during Lewinskygate. They ended up backing BILL CLINTON!! They kept very quiet during the last election and the vicious attacks on Governor Palin, as well. Maybe it's a trend or a shift in social mores, but it's a good sign.

Lettterman's ratings through the roof? The guy's been seeing the coat tails of his competitors for years. You know what I wish? When liberals post here, at least they'd have something interesting, accurate and relevant to say. Something that could actually lead to a thoughtful discussion. But I think the truth is that they are so full of misinformation and talking points that they are almost incapable of it. How can we recruit higher quality liberals to post here? If that's not possible then we need better trolls. Maybe I'll run a Craiglslist ad.

Just when Maher pisses me off enough to cancel HBO, True Blood opens anther season. I just can't stop my morbid fascination complex. Does that make me a bad conservative. I don't watch Maher's show and no one else in my family does either and the rest of my family is liberal, too. I do wonder if Maher is still on the air because the rest of the programming just carries him along and he is a fav of the producers. But damn I wish there was a conservative alternative to HBO. They do have some of the best and many of the worst series on the premium channels. I see the liberal agenda in most but you got to admit there are some gems along side of the turds.

The Republican party lost an important strategist when Lee Atwater died. If he'd have been around for the Clinton years, their smears and lies would not have gone unanswered. Instead, they did go unanswered and the left learned a lesson about Republicans… that they will not fight back. That lesson was reinforced by the 8 Bush Jr. years when he refused to fight back. The end result… Barry Zero is now ruling this country as if he were king. This is why i hate the Republican party. I am a conservative. The left sees politics as warfare where the ends always justify the means. We conservatives recognize this in the left and are willing to fight fire with fire. I rarely see daylight to my right, I love Sarah Palin maybe too much and I'm no fan of Bill Mahr's but I just agree with him 100% on that quote. I stopped watching Letterman when he started getting all lefty recently. But this joke was at A-Rod's expense and Letterman "never meant, never thought, and never said" anything inappropriate for late-night.

Thank you for the link. I keep seeing the mantra repeated on the Internet about evil Republican attacks on Chelsea Clinton. However, I don't remember ever hearing those and the people who repeat this myth never bother to provide details and/or proof. Rather, like most "facts" from the Left, they are true simply because they have been repeated often enough.

Bill Maher and David Letterman are both very angry and bitter men. They try and make anyone who isn't angry and bitter feel stupid for not being so. I really could care less what either of them have to day. Neither of their comments come as any suprise to me. The joke was low and the commentary on the joke was lower. I wouldn't expect anything less from these bottom feeders.
The tactic of the left is very simple. Vicious personal attacks and insults. Be as mean and crude as possible. The ends justifies the means. The people that claim to be champions of fairness and compassion will show no quarter, attack an opponents family and children, make crude and vulgar sexual jokes about their children. The strategy is clear, demean and debase continually until it sticks. Maher and Letterman are just mean and partisan without any intellectual component. Letterman is especially clueless, ranting about global warming without ever even considering that he uses private jets and limos and has no business lecturing the rest of us. I'm sick of the meanness and anger from the radical left.
NOW is not courageous. *sad* Have they secured their bailout funding? Anymore scripts with their approval coming up on HBO? NOW believes some women are more deserving than others. Sure, they may bunt for a child of a conservative but don't expect them to run to first too.
Kids and the subject of their abuse should never be fodder for comedians.

Oh please spare me the phony outrage. I remember 8 years of Chelsea Clinton jokes from Limbaugh, it's obvious that kids of politicians are not off-limits from those on the right. But unlike Chelsea, the Palins inserted Bristol front and center into their conservative ideological drive, making her a very ironic "abstinence-only" spokesperson, trotting her out whenever possible to show that she made the right "choice" (the one that they want to take away from other women) and was going to marry her baby daddy (which she isn't actually going to do). I think Letterman was wrong to make the joke, which was CLEARLY about Bristol, not Willow (remember which one actually got knocked up), because it's still making fun of a barely adult person. Letterman made it crystal clear he was not making fun of a 14 year old being impregnated by a much older man.
He's apologized twice, but the "furor" is manufactured and totally fake. As for the "slutty flight attendant joke" … I remember reading for months the comments from her male supporters, many of which seem to focus mostly on how much they want to have sex with her. So don't whine when that comes back in play. Her 15 minutes are up, get over it.
