Real Time, Real Man: Maher Takes His Shot at Palin

During his opening monologue on ‘Real Time’ Friday night, Bill Maher, couldn’t resist piling on to the David Letterman controversy and the sex jokes made by him earlier in the week regarding Sarah Palin’s daughter.
In defending his friend, Maher thought Republicans had over reacted and this was just a case of ‘fake’ outrage. Much ado about nothing. He then went on talking about how Letterman had invited Sarah Palin and her young daughter, Willow, to appear as guests on his show but the Governor declined because she thought it would be wise to keep her daughter away from him. Said Maher, “…that’s right, he’s 62 years old, he’s gonna fuck her right there on stage…it would be very wise to keep her, very wise, yes. You know, I’d worry a little more about the 18-year old hockey players who knock up your daughters.” To which his audience of trained seals laughed and clapped and had a good old time.
I sat there stunned. Much like his pal Letterman, as far as I was concerned, Maher had crossed the line. Big Time.
What is it with these guys?
For some strange reason, the Palin family continues to be a source of comedic gold despite the fact that Sarah Palin is Governor of Alaska. Can you imagine the side-splitting laughs we would’ve been able to enjoy had she been elected as our first female vice-president? Damn! Maher and Letterman would have ‘killed’ day in, day out. Their adoring audiences would have been carried out of the theatre on stretchers. “Somebody call the comedy ambulance for the love of Mike! Dave did it again!”
According to Bill Maher, these jokes are ‘harmless.’ Women of NOW are you listening?
Remember when Don Imus was canned in 2007 for his comments made in reference to the Rutgers women’s basketball team? The outrage from the usual suspects and others was a bit more ‘real.’ He was called a racist and a sexist. He was forced to apologize for his lame attempt at humor and sent on his merry way by the powers that be.
No such luck with Bill and Dave. Harmless. Yeah, right.
Isn’t it interesting?…depending upon who is telling ‘the joke’ and who is the subject of ‘the joke’ there seems to be an inconsistency of just how ‘real’ or how ‘fake’ the outrage is when dealing with those oh so tolerant souls on the left.
What’s up with that?
We all know the answer. For Bill Maher and David Letterman, no harm, no foul because the Palin family deserves it. They asked for it because Sarah Palin is who she is. An authentic, decent woman who became the governor of a state and last year accepted an invitation from Sen. John McCain to join him as his running mate for vice-president.
The fact that the Palin’s are conservative doesn’t have -a- thing- to- do- with- it. In the upside/down world which we now live, the Palin’s and their kids seem fair game to some on the left. WTF!?
One man’s free speech is another man’s hate speech. One man’s outrage is another man’s ‘fake’ outrage. At least it is if you worship at the altar of Leftism.
As a father and a husband, I can tell you this much, my outrage is friggin’ real. For Todd and Sarah Palin. For their daughters, Bristol and Willow. For their family and those who love them. For my wife. For my daughter. Nothing fake about it at all, Billy boy.
Enough is enough.
Time for action. Saturday, my wife and I canceled our HBO service. A big thank you to Bill Maher. If there are others out there who have had enough of his brand of comedy, I suggest you take some action. Make a phone call to your service provider, let them know how you feel. You need to hit back. Hit ‘em hard where they understand it most, in the wallet. For some odd reason, that seems to get their collective attention. Money. Honey.
In closing, it’s good to see the National Organization for Women and other women’s groups speaking out on the Letterman issue. As I mentioned earlier, hopefully, feminists are watching, listening and take notice of Maher’s Friday night performance and his stab at humor regarding the Palin girls. Harmless? You be the judge.
As for Bill and his friend Dave, if they want to get back to the high road and make amends for the hurt they’ve caused the Palin family, I have a few suggestions:
Apologize. Sincerely apologize. Stop with the jokes concerning the Palin’s daughters. Millions of young women and their families will be watching; listening.
And if by some slim chance our pseudo heroes punk out, I suggest women and the men who love them, petition our state department to send Bill and Dave on an excellent adventure. Swap these two clown kings for American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee currently being held prisoners on some BS charge of illegally entering the armpit which is, North Korea.
That way, everybody wins.

The problem with the Left is that they think everybody is secretly as cynical as they are — when they hear somebody talking about family values or something equally "sappy", they believe him or her to be a hypocrite because no intelligent human being could possibly preach that B.S. and mean it.
Which is why jokers like Dave and Bill can't let go of the Bristol thing — they're eager to paint conservatives as hypocrites who don't follow the rules they set for others. Anything that even resembles hypocrisy is taken as prima facie evidence of it.

I suspect that BM's thought this through and is using a technique of some kind to keep the pressure on conservatives…a variation of "Keep repeating a lie long enough and people will begin to believe it's true". It's a campaign to wear us down, as in "you can't keep this outrage up forever, you conservatives! When it comes to media, we're many and you're few!"
And, of course, with the MSM perpetuating it, I'll bet it'll be successful. Goal, the hear folks say that Sarah Palin and "hard right" conservatives are the nutcases, not "mainstream" comedians.
Am I the only one that saw Sarah Palin's comment about keeping Willow away from Letterman as more of a threat to Letterman?
I assumed that Governor Palin, being a non-victim type gal, is raising her daughter to be a non-victim type gal, and that she was warning Letterman that Willow was pissed and would likely kick his ass.
But then, I'm a non-victim type gal myself and just don't see the world from the "guys are evil pervs and women are potential victims" perspective.

I cannot stand Maher. It's not because of his politics, but because he is a mean-spirited, petty hack.
As for canceling HBO, I say do it! My wife and I canceled our entire cable service when it dawned on us that there really wasn't much worth watching out there. As a kid who grew up with a TV in every room besides the bathroom, this was no light decision. I thought it would hurt.
But, it didn't. I actually DO STUFF at night now. Weird, huh?
Plus, thanks to Netflix, we watch what WE WANT to watch- proactive TV viewing- we no longer watch what THEY want us to watch- reactive viewing.
Maher, Letterman and all their bitter ilk are just a sign of the times.

The idea of a sexually active 18-year-old is so completely inoffensive that it could go in a Berenstain Bears book. The 18-year-old is who Letterman meant. Palin jumped on the goof and she is manufacturing fake outrage (a) for the publicity and (b) because she is too stupid to discuss any topic of substance and (c) because she doesn't mind humiliating and scaring her 14-year-old for the sake of (a) and (b)–that's all. I think the outrage by the Palin family is genuine, but I think the outrage coming from everyone else is an overreaction. But that doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it. What has me entertained is the same thing that is driving conservatives to jump on the Letterman dogpile: Fresh blood. Palin and her family have been targeted with impugnity for so long that it's exciting to see her counterpunches land and put a leftwing comedian on the defensive. Now that she has a big figurehead like Letterman against the ropes, can anyone blame her for not relenting? She has a lot of frustration to vent, and Dave's the whipping boy.
It's also funny to see how some feminists are handling it. Many don't have the solidarity with Democrats that they did before Hillary got pushed out by Obama, so they're flipping out over this. Go to Hillbuzz.org to witness some real outrage. Also note their nickname for Obama: "Dr. Utopia".

Jimmy Arone, the only way to stop this smut called comedy, which really is character degrading, is to discontinue the tv service, as you did, AND stop buying the products they advertise. How about a one week boycott of the two shows. If this were to happen on a large scale the advertising companies would rein in the inappropriate comments like those directed at the Palin family. I do not have the ability to reach a considerable number of people, but you, and others like you with a following do. Please post a list of the advertisers for both programs on this site, and as many others (Fox News and Fox News on air) as you can. It worked in the early years of tv, maybe it could work today.

I think it's a case of enough is enough. Letterman went beyond the normal (sadly) hate filled remarks that liberals have been spewing for 8 years and he got called on it. The remark about keeping Willow away from Letterman was an *empowering* statement about *HER* implying that she's willing and able to retaliate and defend herself. As in… it wouldn't be pretty.
In fact… and I wish someone could do this… some college psych department or smarty-pants like 'Zo or Chowder…
Find out who thought that the statement that Willow should be kept from Letterman was for HIS protection and who thought that (the statement made implied) Willow should be kept from Letterman for HER protection.
And then correlate with political leanings.
Find out, as I fully expect, if Liberals most often assumed that Willow needed protection from Letterman… and Conservatives assumed that Letterman needed protection from Willow.
Oh…. and it IS faux outrage. Only a lamer wastes emotional energy on the negativity of OUTRAGE as if it makes them right, because they're outraged and CARE a lot and stuff. No outrage involved. It's principled concern and the knowledge that if disapproval is not voiced then (certain) people are too stupid to realize that they are being sexist, rude, bastiches.

After all, Letterman didn't marry his baby-momma for YEARS (though he has, now) and was (supposedly) ONLY making a joke about Bristol (as if we believe that or it makes it okay) who really did absolutely nothing different than Letterman did himself… baby out of wed-lock… and old enough to not have any excuses but to know better.
But even making those jokes just to point out how unacceptable it was for him to make a joke about either girl without even pretending it was okay… made me feel dirty.

I would love to see the liberal media defend Mahr the same way they defended Letterman. Is this still just a joke? Is this still fake outrage? Is this still Palin's fault for trasping around her "knocked up" daughter? The Letterman excuse that he was really taking about the 18-year old no longer applies since Mahr referred to Willow by name.
Jay Leno also made a remark back during the election, insinuating that John Edwards "knocked up" Bristol. Classy. Sexism is fashionable again.

Brisco, I see this largely as turnabout is fair play. If a Republican had made the same joke, the left would be storming his office and threatening to kill sponsors until he was fired. I think a lot of people see this as "if you're going to hold us to this standard, we're going to hold you to it as well."

The First Amendment applies to the government limiting your free speech (and even then we have decency and libel laws). It doesn't have anything to do with people not liking what you have to say. I wrote to HBO months ago and canceled at that time over this punk. You know I'm from a different generation, and a situation like this is only handled by direct physical contact. But this PC world of today allows idiots to pop off and make personal attacks on peoples family, mother, daughter, ..nothing off limits. It is only because they know there is no real consequences for running your mouth. But I'll say this, some guy makes racial or these other type comments about my daughter, wife etc, well, you have to call him on it. That's not actually true, as the media props itself up. Had they not been responded to, the other media types would have rewarded them for their service to Obama by party invites, backslapping interviews, and Emmy nods. Actually Biology was taught by Sister Ann. You can probaly see where this is going. We are also talking about the 70's, so the term abstinence-only wasn't a term that I ever heard used. We where taught how everything "fit together", but with a Catholic School Nun teaching the class the emphasis was more on morals and Church beliefs than on biology. But again, it worked. None of my 7th grade classmates ever came to school pregnant…….

this is the only one i'll bother responding to, although to the previous posters who criticized my *choice* of only using lower-case letters…. two words: bell hooks.
1) so, what you are saying madelyn, is that there is no contradiction when an evangelical, right-wing politician has an underage child who engages in premarital, unprotected sex, correct? are we to believe that this person who espouses such conservative values and cannot even convince their own child to follow them, is capable of occupying the second most powerful position in our govenment? really?
2) don't even try to get me defend gore. he is an idiot, and a p*ssy.
3) rape is not equal to age-of-consent sex, but since letterman claims that he was talking about her 18 year old daughter (and for the sake of argument, let's give him the benefit of the doubt on this one), there is nothing statutory about it. it was a dumb joke, but let's face it, that's about the only kind of joke that old man has left.
4) don't even get me started on the clinton scandals. i hate them at least as much as you. i'm NOT a democrat, and i did NOT vote for clinton, gore, kerry, OR obama.
5) palin is against gay marriage. anybody who would use religious doctrine to deprive fellow citizens of their legal rights is deplorable… and that INCLUDES obama and hillary clinton.
6) anti-choice. yep. i'm sticking with that one. "pro-life" is a loaded term, since most "pro-lifers' are also pro-death penalty and virtually all of them eat animals. "pro-human fetus" is more accurate, but we could go round and round on that one.
7) in purely political terms, when the house, senate, and presidency is held by one party, it's a landslide. throw the numbers around all you want, but this country REJECTED the republican party. straight up.
i agree that "evolving" is a murky term, and in many ways, it seems like we are becoming more crass as the years tick by. at the same time, we look at the last 100 years and see how many people we have extended civil rights to…. we see how the rights of workers and the protections for children have increased. we see how much more aware we are collectively about our impact on the environment, and how we are slowly starting to respond by being more respectful of it. we are starting to see the impact of our poor diet, and are changing our eating habits. per capita, murders and violent crime are much lower than they used to be, although they are still WAYYYYY too high, especially compared to other first-world countries. do we have a long way to go? sure. but as much as i dislike obama, i sure like seeing his hands on the wheel better than that bunch of idiots and criminals we had for the last 8.

People who get the death penalty get it because they've killed/raped people and they are considered "deserving" or death and/or such a danger to society that the rest of us are safer with them dead (more dead murderers means even more people who don't become their victims). Unborn babies/fetuses/proto-people haven't even had a chance to make a moral decision, so why deprive them of a chance at life? Got to agree with Maher on this one. Although Palin jokes are past their due date, the Republican outrage does seem a bit forced on the Letterman joke. It is a two-way street though; usually the Democrats are the ones up in arms over jokes and similar ilk, but now it seems like the Republicans are getting into it.
Part of what attracts me to the Republican party is that it isn't obsessed with calling discrimination at every oppurtunity. This Letterman outrage is rather silly. The joke was bad, like many of Letterman's jokes, but I can't see anyone being genuinely offended by this. It just looks like Republicans going after Democrats for any reason, something that turned me off of the Democrat party already.

A proper reply where the time is taken to follow the rules of the language would benefit so much over a slap-dash one that when figured against the "advantage" of speed the result would at least be a wash and likely be superior. This is a written medium, not a verbal streetcorner debate.
2. A master's degree is certainly no indication of real-world practical intelligence. Many people with postgraduate degrees do amazingly stupid things. And for all I know your degree is in interpretive dance or some such non-academic trifle, there are many degrees out there which really only show you were able to pay the institution that granted them.

Political hypocrites should always be mocked by comedians. Long live that adversarial relationship. There's nothing worse than "good taste" when making jokes about a cynical political hypocrite. If you can't stand the heat, don't parade your daughters across the public stage to advance your political career.
I am a Conservative. For a Liberal, that automatically makes me a hypocrite.
Liberals view Conservatives as "hypocrites" because Conservatives uphold family-oriented, Christian-Judeo moral values. However, Conservatives seem to fall short of fulfilling those moral values.
(Actually, EVERYONE falls short. But Liberals don't have to worry about being hypocrites because the standards they set for themselves are so low that no one is shocked they are scum.)
There are always 'Conservative scandals' such as, "Sarah Palin's daughter is pregnant! How could any really God-fearing Christian woman allow such a thing?! She's not what she really says she is!"
Liberals know that Conservatives are only human and have their failings. Liberals use that as a tool against us: "See, if you weren't so judgmental it wouldn't hurt! And if you'd only encourage the little kids to be homosexuals or perverts, let everyone use drugs and have a good time, everything would be ok…"
Sorry, Liberals. Conservatives don't revel bad acts and are willing to call it what it is. There are also consequences for bad acts. (Funny, you don't see Christians gunning each other down in the streets over Bible verses, but Liberals will set fire to police cars because their basketball team won a championship.)
Conservatives are not hypocrites; merely courageous.
Maher has it all wrong. The REAL reason Gov. Palin wanted to keep Willow away from Letterman was for Letterman's own protection. After all, Willow is probably like her mother: a gun enthusiast, a hunter, someone who knows how to fend for herself.
After what Letterman said about her, Palin was worried her daughter might rip Dave's nuts off, right there on camera.
And I have still to figure out what Gov Palin has done that is hypocritical in the "matter" with Bristol. Bristol brought the baby to full term, consistent with the pro-life belief; for Palin to persuade her daughter to have an abortion would have been hypocrisy. So the flaming out-of-control libs (such as andrea) need to take a deep breath and start trying to deal with reality.

I think Maher really dislikes (probably hates) women because he gets rejected by them so much. Nature was very unkind to him in the looks department, and he compounds that with his unattractive personality. 2) i agree that a master's degree is no indication of real-world practical intelligence…. however, i would argue that if one has obtained a master's in american history from a major, well-respected university (in the boston area), then it is probably safe to say that the person in question understands the basic rules of grammar….. among which are the correct use of capitalization. it doesn't mean that i know how to shoot wolves from a helicopter… i'll give you that one.

Bill Maher is like any other professed "dirt bag" liberal, is willing to go out of his way to undermine and degrade anyone who doesn't agree with his point of view politcally. Maybe when he humiliates Gov. Palin, and her daughters and defends his buddy Dave Letterman it makes him feel more empowered, in essence, " I'm on cable TV so I can say what I want about anyone, and if I don't like their views to hell with their feelings or the feelings of their families".
God forbid if anyone dares to make any so called "humorous observations" about the Obama family. Oh, I forgot he in the eyes of the liberally biased media and their offensive talk show host cronies, continues walking on water, and as a result is totally off limits to any of the insults and vile jokes that are focused toward Conservatives or Republicans leaders..
Would Maher or Letterman be as glib about the whole matter if those same remarks were directed toward a daughter of theirs. What I've seen is a change in liberalism from an ideology to pure hate-mongering by it's leaders and their supporters in the entertainment industry towards people of differing views.
We see this happening all the time now, as in the case of a beauty contestant who gave her honest personal view on traditional marriage. Since the questioner-judge who asked the question is openly gay and did not like her response, he then used his celebrity to not only make sure that the young women did not win the title, but also as a pulpit in continuing to disparage her. The contestant expressed a personal opinion, something she was asked to do. What was she supposed to do sacrifice her value system for the sake of having someone hear what they wanted to hear? During this entire episode the contestant never once condemned or targeted the questioners as to his own personal lifestyle. So much for free speech, and keeping true to your convictions in this new and improved liberal world of 2009.
Most of us who believe in traditional values aren't out of touch, we are just ignored, berated, or in the case of the individuals mentioned above ridiculed or sent packing. If a political candidate campaigns for family values, and their teen daughter ends up pregnant. Does that mean that their position on family values changes? Parents are always there to give love and guidance, but as we all know teens of this generation make up their own minds and make their own choices, right or wrong. The Gov. of Alaska is showing true family values by supporting both her child and grandchild, yet the self serving and ratings hungry talk show hosts find humor in it. I sure these icons of virtue were perfect at 17 or 18 years of age. Just because the children of politicians are with them in public doesn't make them easy targets of ridicule to satisfy a networks need for ratings, regardless of the hosts personal views of the parent or parents.. Maybe it not so much about a bad decision in using certain jokes, as much as it's time for these tasteless celebrities to grow up.
Liberals have to learn that their is nothing inherently wrong with another persons point of view, they don't have to go about damaging other people's self esteem, or find ways of ruining an individual career path in order to push their own agenda's.. If this type of public sewage is allowed to continue unfettered, then our society has taken a very sharp and dangerous wrong turn.
America was founded on voicing differing views on the same subject, and working to find some common ground. Political power tends to run in cycles, and if "militant" liberals continue to hammer conservatives in an open ended fashion, the American public will eventually be forced to ask one simple question. "What are you so afraid of ?"
