Occupy Fights For Cher’s Right to Say F**k on TV

TheWrap.com generously applied the protest label to a tiny group of Occupy Wall Street protesters railing against the right to cuss on the small screen.
The Supreme Court began hearing arguments today about censorship issues pertaining to television, highlighted by cases like Cher’s use of the “F” word on a 2002 Billboard music telecast. And those uniquely fragrant Occupy Wall Street types were there to lend some moral clarity to the debate.
About half a dozen protestors were in front of the court yelled slogans like: “You can kill people half a world away, but you can’t say ‘fuck….’”
Meanwhile, inside the building, the justices wrestled with whether the FCC has the constitutional right to enforce rules prohibiting obscene language and nudity on broadcast television and radio.
If the Occupy censorship movement swells, and who thinks it won’t, the next event could see a baker’s dozen protesters fighting the censorship loving one percent.

well I guess we are not rude and crude enough in America. How dare anyone tell me what words to say or not to say. The day will come when it will be alright to say F###k YOU but not THANK YOU JESUS! in the public square, no wait that day is already here. If only Tim Tebow would cuss on TV instead of Thanking Jesus how much happier the media would be. Plus America would be a better place. Because everyone knows we are missing more cursing and crudness in our society.
I was at a Rick Santorum event on Friday (tried to catch all the candidates in person). It had been scheduled before Iowa, and was too small for the crowd. About 1/3 of the crowd were protestors, the usual crowd we see around here, 'Free the Weed' types, and a few gay rights protestors. When we moved outside some Occupy folks scrambled, and the four of them dumped three bundles of strapping down on the sidewalk and started churning out DOZENS of signs, I was at a loss as to why they were cranking out these random signs, when I watched them hand several to each Free the Weed college student (most of whom lacked the energy to push to the front of the crowd) and ask them to hold them, and they did, giggling all the way. So in less than 5 minutes 4 'real' Occuporons had multiplied magically into around 30 (well, about 10-15, but each holding multiple signs).____
Well, I do ask my Libertarian fence sitters… if 51% of folks think porn on billboards is fine, then so do you. And that will be next…
Now the Occupy folks are getting silly. They want everyone to speak and behave like them! Is this going to fly? Do they want us all to be profane and poorly (or barely) dressed like they are? Maybe they think this is what equality means.
I look great nude on the radio. T.V. not so much.
If they're protesting for the right for Cher (or anyone else) to say a wirty dord on TV, then no doubt they'd protest against any gun-control laws.
The FCC is a bit nanny-ish
The erosion of deceny in discourse has steadily plummeted in this nation for decades.
Words and situations we'd never see on television even a decade ago are now every-day occurrences.
The court's ruling on obscene language will be interesting.

Oh, now it's 4000 arrents? Most of which were for non-violent crimes like dope smoking or sex and/or instigated by undercover cops. I guess you're also including the hundreds of people arrested at once for failure to obey the police and not protest? WHAT CRIMINALS! Assault on who? each other? Little different than assault on innocent victims. Vandalism is kind of a vague charge too and could apply to a number of things none of which have to do with actual vandalism.
And i dont remember anyone in OWS saying we might have to use second amendment remedies to get rid of the Obama administration and their healthcare plan unlike Tea party affiliated and backed politicians like Sharon Angle.

I found this posting about the OWS protests. Wow. Rings pretty true to their demands. Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of history are condemned to repeat them.

Hypocritical implies that the one thing has to do with the other. It might be *silly* to worry about obscene language while training people to be soldiers, but it's not hypocritical in any sense.
(Although, it's not actually a silly hypothetical, and I say this as someone who was not allowed to be sworn at in basic training, which *is* pretty d*mn silly. While training warriors there are good reasons to train discipline in unrelated areas in order to train disciplined habits, professionalism and self-worth. )
*Hypocritical* would be something like… oh… having exotic dancers at the NCO and Airman's club but shutting down the "ladies night" that was so popular because the General got the vapours at the fact that the male dancers were enlisted.
Sort of by accident I heard an NPR report on the court hearings today.
It seemed to imply that the problem was inconsistent rules, not that there were rules, and that enforcement and fines were arbitrary, so that a cuss word or bit of "exposure" on one movie or television show would be allowed with no fines, while something similar in a different show (or on a different network?) might get a heavy fine, and it's all up to the FCC and the mood of the particular person making the rulings.
Wanting the rules to be clear and fines unrelated to human whim is an important element of liberty. More important than some supposed freedom to cuss on broadcast television.
The NPR story quoted the Justices, including (and I'm thinking it might have been Ginsberg?) one who said… "you can only cuss on broadcast television if you're Spielberg."
If true, that's a problem.
You have to remember: Progs toss the word "hypocrite" around without thinking too hard… or following the definition of hypocrisy. All to excuse their own behavior.
