L.A. Elementary School Invites Porn Star To Read To First Graders
by HollywoodlandFormer porn star Sasha Grey says she will not withdraw from an elementary school reading program despite outcry from angry parents, according to a report from TMZ.
Earlier Friday, news broke that a Los Angeles area elementary school is facing some major criticism from parents after the district invited Grey to read to a group of first graders as part of the Read Across America program.
“I committed to this program with the understanding that people would have their own opinions about what I have done, who I am and what I represent,” she said in a statement.
“I am an actor. I am an artist. I am a daughter. I am a sister. I am a partner. I have a past that some people may not agree with, but it does not define who I am.
“I believe in the future of our children, and I will remain an active supporter and participant in education-focused initiatives.”
TMZ obtained photos of Grey reading to the children at Emerson Elementary School in Compton on November 2 as part of Read Across America.

That was my first reaction. And I would think a reaction that is usually on the mark.
But if she isn't referencing her porn career to any of the little tykes, simply reading … what's the harm?
We all seem to have the ability to debase society or enrich society by our actions…and it's our choice each day as to which road we will take.
Truthfully, I couldn't be less concerned that she is teaching & reading to students.
My real concern is the backers of the program that are essentially giving tacit approval to her career choice.
She SHOULD be teaching students "Don't follow in my footsteps…make something useful out of your life".
Instead, the program backers are teaching students "Look, kids!…she's famous! Throw away your moral integrity, seek out celebrity status at all costs, and learn to suppress your gag reflex….and you can be famous like Sasha Grey too!"
Is there any chance of meeting her at parent-teacher night? If not I'm outraged.

The first graders shouldn't know what pornography is, or even celebrity. To first graders, she's just some woman that came to school and read to the them. And she didn't even dress as a slut.
Funny, but I'm not finding a whole lot to be outraged about here – so far as Ms. Gray is concerned. She's a pretty lady who read us a story from teh kids POV. I can't see any harm being done to the kids. The decision of the school administration, though, deciding she would be an acceptable reader without checking her background – very problematic there. Or, knowing her background and allowing her to read anyway, without notifying the parents – big red alert.
She must be a teachers pet.

If she is genuine in what she said, then people need to get over it. She put the salacious behavior on the shelf and is moving on, attempting to do a bit of good.
The parents ought to be more concerned with vetting the teachers who hold sway over their children for over eight hours a day.
Reading the comments really highlights the difference between the socialists and conservatives. Conservative seem to feel that though someone did something wrong in the past, people change. The lefties on the other hand believe people don't change, and if the bad thing was done by one of them then it really is not a bad thing, but if it was done by a conservative it is the worst thing-in-the-world and MUST be used to define that person for evermore.
Maybe this has something to do with the large number of conservatives who believe in a Forgiving GOD. It probably rubs off on those who don't.

Unless her former career somehow is made part of what she is doing at the school I don't see how she is hurting anyone. It sounds like she's trying to do the right thing. Everyone deserves a second chance.

If the latter, this is yet another case of someone on the school board wanting to push some social buttons and futher desensitize kids to decadent behavior.

I can't see getting too upset by this. Technically, Sylvester Stallone could be barred from reading to kids for the same reason. He did some adult oriented work back in the day. Ron Jeremy has a Master's Degree in Special Education. Does his other career exclude him?
Sasha Grey is trying to do something positive and being condemned for it, simply because of her past. Say what you will about her old career, but what she used to do was not against the law and was her choice. I don't hear her advocating it to children so I have no problem with it.

Look, I'm a social conservative, and I suppose that means I'm expected to take a dim view of pornography, but unless there are any other people here who've been in the undesirable position of being virgins for 27+ years, you're in no position to judge me. As a young, healthy male with absolutely no access to real-life women (I live in a small town in New Hampshire), I need an outlet for my natural desires. Anyway, this is yet another example of the mainstreaming of porn into our culture. My have times changed since we snuck a peak at our dad's Playboy magazine.
When a kid is told a celebrity is coming to visit, they will of course wonder what makes that person a celebrity if they do not already know.
These kids went home and googled her, or used the public library (which is now legally prohibited from limiting porn searches), or the school computers. Want to guess what showed up on Page One?
And the fact that this woman was presented in a positive light… what lesson do you think was given to the children about what you can do to become a celebrity? Do you think that is an appropriate thought to put into a 10 year old's mind?
This was not just some random "civilian" person coming in to read to them. This was presented as someone celebrated to spend time with them.

You may have a point there. Not being a parent myself I'm not sure what their curiosity level would be. Nor are we told anything about the program she's involved in i.e. celebrities or just guest readers. Still, that would drive home even more the point about the major culpability of the school administration.

My belief is that
(a) Most 10 year olds aren't going to go home and "Google" her and find her background . They remember her only for what she did that day, and
(b) Don't know Sasha or her background but can say (in my normally cynically mode) there is no "payoff" for her in doing this other than knowing you have done a bit of good for society
So in my normally cynical attitude, kudos to her.

Part of me is all for someone who wants to improve and turn their life around. I think its great she doesn't want to do porn, but if she doesn't understand the self-destructive nature of what she did, nor the associations the porn-industry has with prostitution, drugs, and human-trafficking, then has she really turned over a new leaf?
Did she stop doing porn because she changed her mind about porn, or because she has enough money now?
The other thing is this: I'm a Christian. I believe that people bring spirituality everywhere they go and that they leave some of it everywhere they go. Christians who walk in the Holy Spirit are supposed to overflow with goodness to those around them. It's what happens when someone in a bad mood seems to dampen a room or when a joyful person seems to lift everyone's spirits. I just wonder what kind of spirit she left those kids with.

This article is not critical of Sasha Grey, nor am I. I wouldn't necessarily hanging with my kids, but if you want her to read to yours I wouldn't stop you.
The article is about the School Systems priorities: Please try to get that through your skull. Regardless of whether the porn star is qualified to read to kids the real issue is the school's administration. They are the people the article is about.

I can see you have a sense of humor. I'm no porn aficionado, but once a year or so, I'll go and read the 'Top' whatever movie lists over on AVN.com, just for the laughs. Some of the titles will make you laugh out loud…
(CONT.) The porn also kept me from being truly engaged with my faith. Once my engagement was broken off, I focused on rooting this issue out of my life. "Every Man's Battle" is a great book to read that can illustrate the damage that porn can cause to a believer, whether single or married.
And something else: If you're looking to seriously start a relationship with a girl, especially a fellow Christian, chances are she's not going to be wild about the porn habits. In general, women aren't as into it as men are, and can cause them to feel inferior, as if they're somehow not enough for you. Not to mention the body image issues it will cause them to have. I commend you for being a virgin. I came *thisclose* to giving it up for my ex-fiancee, and I'm so glad I didn't. My wife and I were both virgins when we got married, and it truly is the greatest gift you can give each other. I was really worried when she and I started dating, that we would eventually get to the stuff about my ex-fiancee and why that relationship failed. It wasn't easy being honest with her, but she was a great, forgiving woman and was able to overlook my past to see who I had become.

Did the article clarify that she's done with porn? That might be part of the outrage. If she was still active in that line of work, then I can see why people would be upset. However, if she has indeed said, "You know, I did this, but it's not something I'm proud of, and I'm doing something better with my life", and she's doing this as a volunteer thing, then there isn't a problem.
What's the deal? It wasn't like she was reading to them nude, or reading "120 Days of Sodom". Can we as a nation just get over Puritianism and our neuroses around sex?
