Report: Madman Takes Hostages at Discovery Channel Building, Demands Programming Changes

Suspected hostage taker James Lee
UPDATE via MSNBC: Lee said he experienced an ‘‘awakening” when he watched former Vice President Al Gore’s environmental documentary ‘‘An Inconvenient Truth.”

The suspect, identified by police as an Asian male, has “some sort of device on him that may be explosive in nature,” Friz told the station.
Some witnesses reported that the man fired a shot before declaring, “Nobody is going anywhere,” according to police.
Authorities have so far not confirmed how many shots were fired. Employees at the building were told to take cover in locked offices, according to local press accounts.
Children at a day care center located inside the Discovery Building were reportedly safely evacuated to a nearby McDonald’s restaurant.
Discovery Communications LLC operates cable and satellite networks in the U.S. including The Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet.
Apparently, the man is named James Lee, an environmental activist and longtime antagonist of the Discovery Channel over their lack “of real shows that actually work to save the planet.”
Here’s a section of what’s being reported as Lee’s manifesto:

The Discovery Channel produces many so-called “Environmental Programs” supposedly there to save the planet. But the truth is things are getting not functioning; there needs to be a change of course. It’s time to bring about new initiatives and try different approaches whether they are conventional or unconventional. It is evident that the old approach is ineffective. We can see this when we watch the news or read the newspapers that their ways are not working. It’s one disaster after another. They are deliberately showing ineffective shows to make it seem like something is being done when nothing is. Their ineffectiveness is evident by the lack of results. Things should be getting because of their shows, not worse.
We are running out of time to save this planet and the Discovery Channel is a big part of the problem, not the solution. Instead of showing successful solutions, their broadcast programs seem to be doing the opposite. Shows like “Cash Cab” and “Dirty Jobs” serve as diversions to keep the focus off what is really important, which is Global Warming and Animal Extinction. Why do they broadcast a show like “Future Weapons” that only promise to destroy the planet even more? And their new lineup “Planet Green” is all about more shows like these when the planet is in crisis? No, instead the focus should be on coming up with new formulas that work.
The reason television shows like these are maintained is due to lack of response. We as a society allowed them to continue; only we the people can ways short walking distance away from Silver Spring Red Line Metro Station. Please come and make your voice be heard around the world saying you want solutions sought today and you want it broadcast on television continually.
The debate about the state of the planet is done. Global Warming is a reality. The massive extinction of animals is happening all over the world. Now let us begin the debate on how to save the planet. We can’t wait anymore, something must be done immediately! Let’s act on it right away; let this be a new chapter in the earth’s history. As human beings we must join together to save it.

So this guy walks into the building, pulls out a gun, fires at least one shot, and takes hostages. His manifesto reads like some college student's caffeine-stimulated late-night ramblings and doesn't give specific reasons why the Discovery Channel's shows are "bad for the planet" (except maybe in the case of "Future Weapons"). He also claims that the "debate about the state of the planet is done" (thank-you Al Gore and James Cameron), demands "action now" (no specifics) to "save the planet" and puts out a call for people to show up to "make their voices heard around the world". I wonder if Rahm Emanuel is thinking about how the administration can use this crisis to their advantage?

It's been stated before in this forum and others that environmentalism is a religion for some people. I think it definitely has an apocalyptic tone to it. Environmentalists pore over the scientific data looking for anything that confirms the imminent collapse of the ecosystem with the same urgency with which Millerites sifted through the Bible for clues about the exact date and time of the Second Coming. And, like those unfortunate 19th-century Americans who were diagnosed with "religious mania," some environmentalists appear to suffer from their own disturbances of thought and emotion.
We humans – religious and secular – seem to have an appetite for Apocalypse. It seems to be hard-wired into us, and it can become pathological if we take it too seriously. This is why I have a hard time believing the current AGW hype: I think it has more to do with psychology than meteorology. Various people and groups have been predicting the end of the world for hundreds of years – maybe thousands. It hasn't happened yet. What makes the environmental doom-sayers any more credible than the rest?

I have long wondered why nutcases who strongly believe there are too many people on the planet do not remove themselves from it when they first have their revelation.
I have been following posting at the website DU since the story began. At first, they were indeed commenting that he must be a "bagger" or "right-winger". And as I expected, after the info on this nutcase started coming out, comments at DU began to dwindle. They always avoid any story when it makes the left look bad.
