Flashback: Milton Friedman Schools a Young Michael Moore
by Hollywoodland***UPDATE 10:10 pm: Some commenters are doubting if that’s really Michael Moore. Everyone in my email in-box and Twitter account thinks so. It’s true there’s no way to tell other than to take the YouTube uploaders’ word for it. After viewing the exchange for a few minutes I bought it. But you wouldn’t be able to knock me over with a feather if that wasn’t the newest member of the Academy’s Board of Governors.

Little something from the late 1970s, which means Moore is somewhere in his early to mid-twenties. At first you won’t believe that’s him, but hang in there. He’s much younger and thinner (weren’t we all), so you have too look and watch closely. After a while, the eyes, gestures, double talk, appeals to emotionalism and complete inability to understand or respect logic and facts will start to look familiar.
The debate is an interesting time capsule of a time when the Left pretended to be worried about auto safety. Today Moore and his liberal friends want us all driving one of these deathtraps down the freeway amongst semi-trucks and all the big limos transporting environmentalists like Al Gore to Earth Day ceremonies.
We’ll take the Ford Pinto with or without the $13 gizmo any day.

Man, Moore looked and sounded exactly like Sean Peen does.
Great minds think a like, crappy ones must do as well(as well as sound and look alike).
And God, do I miss Milton Friedman.
That was absolutely awesome. It reminds me of sooo many other times I have tried to argue with a liberal that attaches emotions to logical arguments.
What I loved the most was when Freedman asks Moore, what if it cost 200 million to place the gizmo on the car what then….
His blank dear in the headlights look followed by "what". That tells you everything you need to know…..
So, apparently, we've learned two things. One, Michael Moore never listened to anyone and two, McDonald's is the devil. Holy crap! That wasn't Michael Moore. That was the kid Michael Moore ate!
I saw this more than two years ago in a massive Binge of Friedman scoping on youtube.
I had NO idea that was Michael Moore. Tells me that even though Moore got schooled, he wouldn't let facts get in the way of turning suckers who vote democrat into dollar bills.
This is Friedman at a good level. He could be a lot better. He could have eviscerated the argument more effectively. I don't know what he would have said, but I know he could have.
I need more assurance that that was MMoore. I don't see it, but I am a bit blind when it comes to facial recognition. I thought he had always carried the extra meals around with him.
wow, that was michael moore 2 million cheeseburgers earlier.
Personally, I loved seeing and hearing all the other students in the room start moaning and taking up for Moore. So sad when your collective illusions are shattered. I could almost hear those supposedly superior intellects crying out, "Stop ruining our beliefs with your logic!"
Moore cannot look his subject straight in the eye….he still can't. He's always looked down or to the side or under his eyelids.
I wonder how Michael Moore is going to feel when this all-powerful government full of brilliant bureaucrats making up all their brilliant safety pronouncements and requirements decides to turn its power towards heart disease once the problem of automobile safety is solved once and for all. A government that's powerful enough to mandate every tiny safety detail in every make and model automobile is powerful enough to set the fat and salt content in all of our foods. Something tells me that Michael Moore is not going to want the government getting between him and his fat and salt.
We know on both the issue of auto safety and fat/salt intake, Milton Friedman would want us to be Free To Choose.
The only way I could positively believe that is Michael Moore is if he had the ratty Michigan State hat he wears 24/7. He did sound like the same idiot though. It would be great fun to get him in an interview and ask the same question that he asked to Milton Friedman and see his reaction.
The biggest problem with Moore's whines about the Pinto is that the Pinto, even with its gas tank problem, was a relatively safe car by historical standards. The things which caused most injuries in early cars were sharp metal edges on the dashboard, solid steering columns, shatterable windshields, collapsible roofs, etc. Historical studies of traffic accidents have also shown that the Pinto was no more or less dangerous than other contemporary cars in its class.
I found it intersting that Moore said that he believed in abortion because he didn't value life. Then he caught up in a pisssing match arguing that same value on principle. Dr. Friedman exposed Moore for the fraud Moore is.
If you shaved his head and gave him a banjo…….anybody?
Wow, he was so thin. Friedman really knocked him around.
I don't think this is real Michael Moore. I think the uploader of the video referred to the guy as a young Michael Moore, much like someone might refer to a young inventor as "a young Thomas Edison".
Here is a picture of Moore from the 70s.

I think you're right…
Life's experiences obviously have not affected communist Mikey. He simply hasn't progressed intellectually, or matured beyond the 10th grade.
the post office issued a report a while back stating the pinto was the most efficient, and economical vehicle they ever purchased. so i guess mr moore was wrong then, just as he is now. some things never change,
for once i agree with mike, i don't value his life.
Have to agree after seeing a picture of a young Moore. I don't think it's him.
I don't think that's Moore. Just another boring albeit precocious leftist. God, their breathless, adolescent, puddle-shallow arguments are tiresome. They never gave a damn about safety. It was about bashing and tearing down corporate America.
Quelle douche!
You, and he, can see the results of government overreach, regulation, welfare, etc. all over his beloved Michigan. It's in shambles and it's all due to his "gods" of government and unions. Michigan is exacly the way it is BECAUSE of what Moore preaches. But he, and lots of his liberal/lefty/socialist friends fail to see it for what it is or that their policies have caused it. Because they see themselves as brilliant and this can't be due to them, but greed on the side of evil corporations or Republicans. But doesn't Moore (in this clip) look like the kid from 'Deliverance' grown up? I'm going to go watch Team America. Always an uplifting movie that shows members of the Film Actors Guild in their true light.
Friedman was as usual great, in this video. Everyone at some point in their lives has certain illusions shattered and it is painful at first, but IMHO, it's part of living and learning.
I just loved how Milton kept giving Moore the finger. Classic!
So much can be learned from the way Milton Friedman engages this young man.
He is respectful, logical, interactive (clarifies by asking questions), and effective
He seeks to engage, provoke thought, teach, and persuade
He doesn't raise his voice, call him names, or belittle him (a la Rush Limbaugh and Michael Medved)
He isn't bombastic or sarcastic (a la Mike Gallagher and Hugh Hewitt)
He doesn't use canned repetitive rhetoric and catchy talking points (a la Shawn Hannity)
He doesn't make fun of the young man (a la Laura Ingram)
He doesn't make ridiculous facial expressions (a la Glenn Beck)
Bill Bennett, Dennis Pragert, Walter E. Williams, and Thomas Sowell are present day examples of conservatives that follow Dr. Friedman's manor of debate.
So, it wasn't glandular!
Miss you Milton…
Very constructive. Fucking moron.
And, you know, the thing about Moore… he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living…
Ah… into the lion's den….
Firstly, the poster comments "It’s true there’s no way to tell other than to take the YouTube uploaders’ word for it." Um, technically, couldn't you ask Michael Moore?
As for the comment "Today Moore and his liberal friends want us all driving one of these deathtraps [Smart Cars] down the freeway amongst semi-trucks and all the big limos transporting environmentalists like Al Gore to Earth Day ceremonies… We’ll take the Ford Pinto with or without the $13 gizmo any day."
Well, Smart Cars are not allowed on freeways, so that's just a stupid comparison. Let's compare apples to apples: the Toyota Prius 3rd generation is heaver, taller, longer and has a wider wheelbase than the Ford Pinto. The Prius is narrower by 0.7 inches. The most powerful of the Pinto engines was 103hp while the Prius can get a combined power of 134hp (the gas engine alone is 98hp, more than most of the Pinto engines). Setting aside the question of the fuel tank (subsequent studies apparently showed the Pinto was no less safe than other cars in its class), the Prius beats the Pinto on almost every statistic you can find that would impact safety (I wonder if the Pinto at this time even had seatbelts; it certainly wouldn't have had airbags). It was also butt-ugly.
So, yeah, go ahead and take that Ford Pinto and show those zany environmentalists what's what!
