Downed Pilot Survives Crash and Cannibals
by G.I. Film FestivalHave you ever watched an Indiana Jones movie and said to yourself, “There is no way anyone could survive that!?” Well guess what…you’re wrong. Watch the movie “Injury Slight…Please Advise,” and you’ll see exactly what I mean.
COL Charles Sullivan “Sully” had no movie magic to help him navigate when his plane crashed into the New Guinea jungle behind Japanese lines in September of 1943 during WWII. Sully managed to survive the crash and survive the harsh jungle conditions for 30 days before finding an Allied Australian troop encampment. During his thirty-day jungle adventure, he encountered hostile natives whose initial welcome quickly turned into frustration and suspicion, causing Sully to flee for his life. Searching for Allied help and scrounging for food and shelter; Sully’s fortitude and grit and pure determination to return to his young bride kept him alive during those harsh, grueling thirty days. Being rescued should have been the end of Sully’s adventures however, even more calamities occur, from which Col Sullivan emerges with humor, dignity and with the spirit of a true American hero.

You will love this thrilling, edge of your seat film which was directed by Josh Baxter of Arion Pictures. Josh graduated from University of Memphis in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Sullivan retired as a Colonel in 1968 after twenty-eight years of military service. Almost fifty years to the day of his crash – in September 1993 – Sully’s P-38 Lightning was discovered in the New Guinea jungle, where it rests to this day.
Col Sullivan and the film’s director Josh Baxter will participate in a question and answer session following the World Premiere screening of Injury Slight…Please Advise at the GI Film Festival 13-17 May, in Washington DC.
Please consider supporting the effort to keep great movies about America’s military in the marketplace by supporting the GI Film Festival. The GI Film Festival is non-profit, a 501-c-3 whose mission is to honor the service and sacrifices of the men and women in uniform through the medium of film. What is it about pilots with the nick name "Sully"?
My dad was Army Air Corps/USAF pilot for thirty years – WW II, Korea, and Viet Nam – so you can bet I'll be getting this on DVD ASAP. Military aviators are a special lot, which I learned growing up in the midst of hundreds of them, but I didn't really appreciate it until I was out and about in the civilian world. That's one of the reasons I liked John McCain so much, despite some of his policy weaknesses: He reminds me of my dad. A LOT.

Ya, me too. My Dad is a retired Air Force major, pilot and combat vet. He's almost 80 and he's still tough as a boot. A 5'7" 190 dynamo. I'm humbled at what he seen and done, from taking U-2's into Turkey in the 50's to combat in Vietnam. We need guys like him again.
My father is still tough as nails at 70 years old he was swept up in the draft for Viet Nam. He survived miraculous encounters that boggle the mind. I'm glad to see that there are some people who are still making movies about the valor of the brave men and women of this country and their timeless contributions to it. I'm going to be buying this DVD as soon as possible.
They are still around
I cannot say how much I appreciated seeing this here tonight. I just watched on my cable movie channel something called In The Valley of Elah. I had heard it was 'anti-war' but not much else.
The American Military is one of the greatest fighting forces for GOOD in this weary old world.
To have a movie made let alone shown in a time of War such as The Valley of Elah is a travesty and shows huge igonrance and profound disrespect. It is beyond despicable that anyone calling themselves American would have a hand in the making of this outrage.
Thanks for the information regarding this film. We will buy it and cherish it in our collection because of the fundamental truth it tells about the spirit and courage of our American fighting men and women. Whether it is WWII or today.
Courage and respect as well as knowing history is something this new administration does not appreciate.
But Americas people DO!
I met an 84 yr old Navy combat vet on a flight recently. As spry as ever; he flew TBMs
and had to ditch with his gunner. They ended up in a POW camp, Ofuna. Japan surrendered soon after. He was a POW for about 24 hrs. You never know who you are going to meet.
I will have to check this out. A generation of heroes is passing away.
I have been privileged to meet both Col Sullivan and his former P-38 wingman, Lew Lockhart. They are two fine examples of the Greatest Generation and both retain the fighter pilot spirit. Since my company supported producer Josh Baxter in reaching the remote New Guinea crash site, I can honestly tell anyone “Injury Slight, Please Advise” is accurate in every way. Hollywood could not improve this incredible WWII survival story and Baxter worked hard to ensure every detail was confirmed by those who were there. We even located an elderly native who was a boy at the time of the crash and escape – he told translated elements of the escape story EXACTLY as Col Sullivan related them. We had pretended to know nothing of the wreck background and took care not to contaminate the story and/or be the object of potential tribal retaliation. (After a warning by an anthropologist.) We recalled what almost happened to "Sully". ____If you know a WWII vet – capture their stories on your video cam – and American history while these amazing vets are still here. ____Steve__Adventurer __Go Remote, Inc. Josh: I'm so happy to hear about your latest achiievements with the film…..I just have to see a copy of it finished.
I'm really proud of you for your newest accomplishments…but not at all surprised. The Film is so good, I knew if
would go!! And not one is more deseerving than you of success!!
People need to see this film. It is just incredible. I am very pleased that Josh Baxter was so moved by Col O'Sullivan's harrowing story, that he invested such significant time and energy, and risked his personal financial resources to produce this piece about a real American hero. People either forgot, or they never knew that this country was losing World War Two in 1942 and would send its young men half way around the world to an island named New Guinea to stop an aggressive enemy nation. And here the tide turned. (continued…)
We owe Col. O'Sullivan and others of the Greatest Generation a huge debt. We should honor them and thank them. One small way to do this is to support this film, and see that it gets the public airing that it deserves. I wish Josh much success and prosperity for this work. Through him, we can all learn a little more about the risks and personal sacrifices of a generation that gave all. Charles O'Sullivan did. And he deserves to have his incredible story told. My uncle, Lt. John Mangas MIA, flew his P38 on then Lt. O'Sullivan's wing eight months before the event captured in "Injury-Slight", in the Battle of Lae Harbor, a predecessor of the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, one of the greatest military victories in our nation's history. O'Sullivan, as flight leader, brought my uncle home safely from that mission, nearly 200 miles into enemy held territory. (continued…)
Sadly, Johnny was lost only a few hours later, on the third and final mission of the day when on the return escort back to Moresby, he pulled off his flight leader's wing, and went back over Lae to protect a struggling B17 bomber under attack by enemy zero fighter planes. Johnny gave his life when he was shot down protecting that bomber and crew, which survived the mission. He was never recognized for his sacrifice and heroism, and thus no one ever knew. Col. Charles O'Sullivan, Johnny's flight leader, should be recognized, and thanks to the efforts of Josh Baxter and Steve Cushman, we all have a chance to honor an American hero.

This is a truly fantastic story about a downed American fighter pilot during WW II. It is a story of courage in the face of overwhelming circumstances in a hostile environment that took place in the jungles of New Guinea! Not only did "Sully" have to survive the jungle itself, enemy Japanese patrols, unfriendly natives, but his own panic and desperation. It is honestly told by Col. Charles O'Sullivan himself, which adds immeasurably to the authenticity of the film. How many men would admit to being siezed by the impulse to "just run", or to an innermost thought of saving the last bullet in his pistol for himself? Not many, I'll wager!!! I think most men would tend to paint themselves as more heroic than they really were in these type of situations.
It is further verified by an elderly native, who was a boy at the time, who still lives in that same jungle (little advanced from the "Stone Age"), halfway around the world, right down to where they found his boots under a bush while they were searching for him after his dramatic escape. An anthropologist familiar with the natives of that area of New Guinea adds her comments, completing the entire picture of this episode. While they were in New Guinea, Josh and Steve went to the site where "Sully's" P-38 wreck still rests, right where he crash landed it over 60 years ago. "Sully's" poem about his plane at the end of the film, where he likens it to "a mighty steed" that carried him as far as it could after being mortally wounded, literally brought tears to my eyes.
I have heard Col. O'Sullivan tell this same story before at past 39th Fighter Squadron reunions and have always thought that someone should make a film about his experiences. I'm gratified to find that "someone" in Josh Baxter, whose considerable talents have completed the task of bringing this phenomenal story to film. I hope the film is well received and finds it's way to an outlet (or outlets!) where many can see it and be reminded of a time when evil had engulfed the entire world in the flames of WW II. Thousands of young men of the "Greatest Generation," just like "Sully" were fighting to keep us free from tyranny, and many paid the ultimate sacrifice and will never have their stories told. We are fortunate that the story of this harrowing experience has survived and has been honestly told first hand by Col. O'Sullivan himself.
People in this country need to see this movie. We take for granted the personal sacrifice men like these have made for this country. Let us not forget this was real life told first hand. GOOD JOB GUYS
I, too would like the opportunity to purchase a DVD, and add my voice to those who feel that the WWII battle for New Guinea has been too long ignored. My dad, Capt. George E. Morgan, 39th FS, was on that particular mission when Col. Sullivan went down. My dad was later killed in action, but in a letter home in December 1943 he wrote, "I am sending you a picture we took of Capt. Sullivan when he returned after 24 days in the jungle. He had lost over 30 lbs. He has returned to the States now. His story would make a good motion picture. Fights with head-hunters and what not."
