Daily Gut: The Pathetic Howl of Howell Raines
by Greg GutfeldIf you ever need to a definition for “loser,” in just two simple words, I’ve got it.
Howell Raines.
If the name doesn’t strike you as familiar, congratulations – you’re one of the many billions of people who never read the New York Times as Raines’s arrogant incompetence steadily drove it into a ditch.

In this Sunday’s Washington Post, Friday, Raines writes a sweaty editorial, lamenting the evil that is Fox News. Probably scribbling from the Unabomber’s abandoned cabin, Raines sputters like the engine of a troubled Prius, spewing…
“For the first time since the yellow journalism of a century ago, the United States has a major news organization devoted to the promotion of one political party.”
He then blames part of this on the “collapse of print newspapers,” something he was responsible for, as he turned the Times into a punchline of plagiarism. Raines resigned, inevitably, because he was more interested in advocacy, than accuracy.
Perhaps worse though, is when he writes of Fox…
“In a bygone era of fact-based commentary typified, left to right, by my late colleagues Scotty Reston and Bill Safire, these deceptions would have been given their proper label: disinformation.”
This, from a guy who helmed a paper that, back in the 30’s, featured the writings of Walter Duranty – the scumbag who won a Pulitzer for covering up the Stalinist famines that killed millions. Being in the Time’s pages – Duranty’s words were accepted as truth – which allowed many more to starve. Robert Conquest notes that the Times bosses suspected that Duranty was pumping out Stalinist propaganda, but sat on their hands.
Raines somehow flushes this from his mind, and instead pathetically tries to rally the press against Fox News. In a sad way, this is a like a man who gets beaten so badly in a fight he started, that he begins crying, “he hit me first.”
Sorry Howell, but your howl is as sad as it is self-serving. Your biases compelled you to ignore corruption in your own staff, and you lost your job. Now that you see your perceived adversaries doing what you could never do (succeed), you’re foaming.
Time to get a hobby. Put ships in a bottle. It’ll calm your nerves and you’ll end up making something nice.
Which may be the most useful thing you’ve done in years.

Raines, yet another leftist imbecile who proves the Left is never wrong, never learns, never atones and never ever apologizes.
With some people, what they are is written all over their face.
Man he looks like crap. Good LOL
little miss tuffet, hey leather jackets, cigarettes, and sunglases for all. andrew dice clay might be a litte too hip for you tonight.
Me thinks he doth protest too much, and the more and louder they yell, the more many people want to know what they are trying to cover up and deflect interest from now, and what they have had a hand in covering up in the past.
Damn Greg!
You scared me with that picture!
Fox smells its own hole!! LOL
BLISTERING COMMENTARY!
Wow Greg!
I knew you were funny, but this is a beautiful skewering of a truly twofaced lying bast@rd.
Brilliant sir, simply Brilliant!
Like so many others on the left these days, his appearance is actually a pretty good portrait of who he is a person, that is to say grotesque.
Jayson Blair agrees.
“For the first time since the yellow journalism of a century ago, the United States has a major news organization devoted to the promotion of one political party.”
Au contraire Howell. In the 1970s, The NYT was devoted to the promotion of one political party – Cambodia's Khmer Rouge. As Jeff Jacoby pointed out in 2001:
"In the news columns of The New York Times, the celebrated Sydney Schanberg wrote of Cambodians that "it is difficult to imagine how their lives could be anything but better with the Americans gone." He dismissed predictions of mass executions in the wake of a Khmer Rouge victory: "It would be tendentious to forecast such abnormal behavior as national policy under a Communist government once the war is over." On April 13, 1975, Schanberg's dispatch from Phnom Penh was headlined, "Indochina Without Americans: For Most, A Better Life."
On the op-ed page, Anthony Lewis was calling "the whole bloodbath debate unreal. What future could possibly be more terrible," he demanded, "than the reality of what is happening to Cambodia now?"

I think liberals must live in some kind of alternate universe.
Howard looks like he caught rectal cancer fron Spicoli.
The ultimate irony is that Fox, Rush and the rest would not even exist were it not for the bias of the mainstream media. Keep howlin', Howell.
Boy these Lefties have no sense of humor when things don't break their way…..Listen to them Howell the children of the Hard-Left. What vile vicious ranting they make.
do you think since fox would never hire jayson, that perhaps msnbc might?
Che una faccia brutta! I don't think we will be seeing his face on shirts like Fay Queervera.
Andrew Dice Clay?! Great. Over/Under on mute buttons = 44 1/2.
You can see this guy is a lot of fun at parties. Looks like a deranged Albert Finney
Succeed?
Greg did you not see the news today? NaziCare is about to pass, and there's probably no way it can be repealed. I think we should hold off on the self-congratulation…
Maybe he can get a job at media matters, looks like he's auditioning. He an exfoliation with lotion.
This guy and his precious NYT are losing because they've been outed by the truth by the internet. Fox is their Scapegoat because the NYT still refuses to print the truth like FOX.
Hypocritically, he writes his rant in the WaPo, which was caught red-handed last summer trying to sell access to the White House by hosting dinners starting at $10,000.
Still, even FOX is 1-2 days behind the internet reveals. Obama better keep his hands off the Net.
.
A face only ET's mother could love (when drunk). I think Raines is just jealous of Megan Kelly.
Raines: Doctor, it hurts when I do this…
Doctor: Then stop doing it…
Raines is not only petulant, he's a bit stupid as well…the constant attacks on Fox News only increases its ratings.
Greg, of course you're going to allow Pinch 2 minutes for 'rebuttal'. And when I say 'rebuttal', I mean Pinch rambling pointlessly for two minutes.
He should team up with Sean Penn and they can put all the Fox News journalists in jail.
Hard to believe this guy is in his early twenties, when your heart is black and your mind is sour it shows.
Was this guy in those Madison Square Garden rallies in the 1940s? Those National Socialist events?
He took a mediocre rag and ran it into the sewer.
I have heard of FoxNews, but I never heard of this meron until today. I remember hearing something about the Gnu Yawk Thymes a long time ago. I think it was related to a crossword puzzle contest. It this paper still being published?
I get all my news from Beck, FoxNews, Rush, Drudge, Breitbart and, of course the People's World. See, I am fair and balanced. What do you do for a living?
Couldn't agree more. And the take off on Hee Haw left me laughing … and more than a little nostalgic for a show that was not only a blast, hey, compared to the New York Times, it was a lot more reliably accurate about almost anything than the moribund NYT
Off the subject, but just gotta say I really, really dig Red Eye! And yep, give Pinch a say on Raines.
Nice to see someone so proud of being stupid and ignorant. Stay happy!
Howell Raines, the would-be Hearst of our times. Good riddance. However, people, don't go puffing up Fox News and patting it on the back. It's not to be entirely trusted for objective journalism, either. Fox News is run by Rupter Murdoch. Murdoch is a big Obama booster, and he's handed down his gum-flapping orders to some of Fox News' best draws. And now it's controlled also by the Saudis, who have bought a major interest in Murdoch's empire.
Good grief. Fox News isn't even that conservative and it drives these people insane. Scapegoat, boogeyman, if Fox didn't exist, the Left would have to invent it.
Steel cage match: Howell Raines and Sean Penn Vs. The Notorious Patti Anne Brown and Megyn Kelly. Book it for wrestlemania.
Looks to me like the guy got a young start. Probably on a little bottle of Old Timer or Granddad or maybe Four Roses that mighta fell out of his dad's pocket . I think alcoholism runs in his family. It usually shows.
He looks so… Irish catholic..
A tactic of the left is to accuse the adversary of exactly what you are doing. It's a method to remove something that might be damaging from the table.
Look at that face. Those jowls and scowl have been formed by many years of being a miserable human. Years of lying and pushing propaganda can't be a very happy way to live. Pathetic.
Man the guy is ugly.

I don't know. Bill hasn't really had his heart in Pinch lately. He just uses his regular voice.
I am sorry, there's just no other way to say it. Howell, you are an ignorant putz. GO AWAY. Your type of journalism is called yellow. It's lying, twisting and spinning facts into something that fits your ideology. GO AWAY. Leave the REAL news to FOX. Have you not seen the numbers? Your type of "journalism" is a dead dinosaur. We're going to correct the revisionist history told by you and your ilk. WE THE PEOPLE have not had the common sense removed from our brains by loony leftist professors, loony leftist so-called journalists nor the gaggle of loons in Hollywood. There are more of us and the numbers for Fox tell the story and it's because YOU and people like you lied for a very long time. Go hang out with Dan Blather and maybe you two can give Chris Matthews another thrill up his leg. Oh, but while you're there, make sure that you speak with a southern twang so he doesn't forget for a minute that you're white.
Oh, and Howell, Bring Lotion!
Mr. Happy Face doesn't look like the world turned out the way he wanted. Maybe he can sit down with Barack Obama and count the ways that FOX News wronged them. He's got some kind of sick compulsion that he believes Rupert Murdoch is going to buy the New York Times and then destroy it. My question, How can you destroy something that's already a piece of trash?
Perfectly said!
Yeah, like when Obama called it "theater" or something to that affect, when a senator dared to put a copy of the 2000 page monstrosity of a health care bill on the table during the "health care summit" meeting. HA!
Oh God, that was so funny, I choked! xO
Mr. Gutfeld, I unabashedly am a fan.
And, iIf only all of these statists/marxists/you-name-its would turn their attentions to putting ships in bottles . . . sigh.
Anybody notice that the New York Times had a front page picture of the Iraqi elections last month? And yet the day after their historic FIRST election(75 percent turnout, amid multiple threats of violence from insurgents) the NYT buried that positive story inside.(Bush was president!) About a year ago, they also had a picture of a U.S. soldier dancing with an Iraqi citizen, which was a shock(a positive picture from Iraq?!!) until I realized that Barack had just been elected…
If you had any shred of intelligence, which you don't, but supposing you did, you'd see that is is the left smelling their own hole. You see, moron, the progressive left, who controlled the media narrative for many decades, are directly responsible for creating FNC. The constant one-sided drumming from the Marxist demogogues created a backlash from common sense Americans. They knew they were being lied to by the media. Uncle Walter undeniably proved that, when he "unwittingly" led millions of Asians to slaughter at the hands of Pol Pot.
So naturally Americans, not being the fools the left portrays them as, have rejected your pathetic ideology and all the carnage that comes with it. That left a vacuum and Mr. Ailes, being the shrewd businessman that he is, filled that vaccum with the very necessary Fox News Channel. It's been a long time coming.
And guess what, poor little sheep, FNC won't be the last either. I hope you like the spawn of your ignorant oversight. Nejoy.
I love Raines' line about a major news organization favoring one political party. He could be talking about NBC, CBS, or ABC, all of which are drinking Obama's drool. Like most left-wing loons, this idiot acts like Moses, coming down from Mt. Sini with his own version of the truth from the Almighty. (Of course, like many liberals, he may not admit to an almighty power greater than his own ego.) Fortunately, more and more people are begining to recognize these progressive news organizations for the propaganda machines that they really are. The so-called "main street media" is withering away because people have learned that they are not getting an accurate picture of what is going on in the world. What these organizations have to report is definitely served up with a left-of-center spin, and what cannot be spun to the benefit of the left, is simply ignored.
He certainly does!
Could you ask Jonathan, Bill or that spy guy to Marry Me? Thank you so much.
He said: “For the first time since the yellow journalism of a century ago, the United States has a major news organization devoted to the promotion of one political party.”
Which means, "For the rest of history, and ever since the yellow journalism of a century ago, all the major news organizations have been devoted to the promotion of the OTHER political party." Do you not understand the serious admission – sans integrity – of his comments? He is implicitly stating that only support of Democrats is acceptable to journalists, and that anything conservative is not allowed in "journalism". And yet, attempting to wear the mantle of "objective" and "trustworthy". Delusional.
The comparison doesn't quite fit. First, Howell's concern is related to our own political system, the proper functioning of which is–with all respect to the people of Cambodia–of far greater importance to me, my family, and the international community (given our status as the sole superpower). Second, Howell's concern is the promotion of one party in a multi-party system to the detriment of another/others. In contrast, only one "political party" existed in Cambodia in 1975; Schanberg's opinions, while easily noted in retrospect to have been woefully mistaken, was advocating national self-governance over foreign occuption. (The more fitting modern comparison is Iraq, where the majority of Americans have reached the same conclusion as Schanberg when comparing the two possibilities.) Finally, Howell believes that the entire machinery of Fox News is employed to promote a political party. It seems attenuated to me to posit a similar systematic slant at the Times based on two articles that are clearly presented to the reader as individual opinions, not "news columns."
To continue: Family Security Matters, has this to say, among other things: "The Saudis, who want Fox’s commentators to not only stop saying “Muslim” on air, but to also put out the unwelcome mat for anyone who criticizes Islam, jihad (violent, stealth, or cultural — all funded by the Saudis and Iran). Glenn Beck and Charles Krauthammer will no longer say bad things about Muslims or Islam." And: "In the wake of this announcement, Fox news commentators – including Glenn Beck, Charles Krauthammer, A.B. Stoddard and Bill Kristol – condemned Geert Wilders, a well-respected Dutch dignitary and critic of radical Islam, as a “fascist” and a “demagogue. Mr. Krauthammer said that Mr. Wilders, who is the leading candidate for Prime Minister in The Netherlands, doesn’t know the difference between Islam and Islamism, a distinction known only to Mr. Krauthammer." Robert Spencer, Steve Emerson, Daniel Pipes, Bridgett Garbriel, Wafa Sultan — persona non grata all. Go here for the story: http://familysecuritymatters.org/publications/id…. The idols on Fox are disintegrating sand sculptures.
you beat me to it. if you want to know what the left is up to and/or thinks, all you have to do is listen to what they're accusing the right of doing.
Interesting take Howell:
“For the first time since the yellow journalism of a century ago, the United States has a major news organization devoted to the promotion of one political party.”
As I recall, since the end of World War II, we have had three major news networks; CBS, NBC, ABC fully devoted to the promotion of one political party, the Democratic Party.
"Second, Howell's concern is the promotion of one party in a multi-party system to the detriment of another/others."
No, it is not. Raines never was neutral between Republicans and Democrats. Fox is not one bit more partisan than the NYT.
"…was advocating national self-governance over foreign occuption. (The more fitting modern comparison is Iraq…" (…) "…the majority of Americans have reached the same conclusion.."
What the hell are you talking about? Let´s leave aside the fact that Cambodia was not occupied or that Schanberg had no excuse for being wrong when many at the time knew better.
Iraqi self-governance was our aim from day one. There was never any doubt that we did not want to run Iraq. We couldn´t create the necessary institutions fast enough and the main problem was our impatience. Thatw as what all debates turned on between 2003 and 2008. To say that "Americans have reached the same conclusion" makes no sense at all as there never was any other conclusion. You are rewriting history. No wonder you like the NYT.
He and Jimmy Breslin were separated at birth.
Raines has obviously seen better days, but I guess we all have. Anyway, this whining is what you would expect as the dinosaurs fade away into blessed extinction. Their days are done and they have shown that they simply will not adapt to changing circumstances. They could not deal with bloggers and the internet and FOX makes a nice scapegoat for these cretins. Good riddance.
Looks like Butch was able to slip a hand out of her strait-jacket.
The guy needs to turn his frown upside down and realize that he lives in the greatest country in the history of mankind. What is it about these libs that makes them so darned miserable. Maybe a little stint in Sudan may make him realize the error of his pathetic ways.
Great article Greg…Thank you!
Kinda looks like Breshnev's long lost.eviler twin to me!! So your spot on with your characterization! zto many years of plots and lies backing up in his colon!
Rolly
This man is truly despicable….. I saw the piece with you and Oreilly last night about this lOOn…. honestly, he is not even worth the salt in his body….I am floored that people actaully listen to this slanted bias BS that spews from the mouths of the Washington Post or the NY times…where he was INDOCTRINATED into the left mleaning media….
But if the NYT could be so obtuse in their asessment of the Khmer Rouge, what must one conclude about their coverage of domestic politics at that time? Can someone who thought Pol Pot was an agrarian reformer be trusted to be fair in evaluating a political landscape in which all the players are to the right of the Cambodian Communists?
Matt Damon really, really sucks.
Look at that utt bugly mugg with the permanent NY intellectoid scorn written all over it, will you?
That's what comes from a lifetime of scowling down one's "knows" at us little intellectual peons who know only from making an honest living, paying taxes, going to church, and raising our kids to be moral citizens.
He could spook a herd of goats.
Howell Raines has more competence in his little finger than some cheap, nobody blogger called Greg Gutfeld has in his entire limp body. Fox News is a piece of utter British tabloid garbage brought to America by the most sensationalist yellow tabloid journalism exec to ever walk the planet, Rupert Murdoch.
Roger Ailes was a GOP hack long before he took over Fox, and is now using the so-called network as the broadcast arm of the GOP. Anyone who really thinks Fox "News" is anything but a mouthpiece for the Republican Party is simply ignorant and not worthy of consideration.
Howell Raines is real journalist, far and above the pathetic right wing, racist, bigoted morons who run Fox "Not News."
Wonderful list of insults you got there, "arealjournalist."
But do you have any PROOF on the matter?
Come on, I'm sure a "real journalist" like yourself would be able to support your accusations with reams of evidence and sources.
I'll be waiting.
Uhh, just wanted to add that the Grey Lady is still proud of Duranty's Stalinist propaganda to the degree that it will not return his Pulitzer. Yep, I read that recently. I think Raines in his despicable ilk have convinced themselves that this will all get better. And then the internet happened.
Decades later, Raines emerges from his spider hole to demonstrate that he has not noticed that his paper's monopoly on the news cycle is in tatters. How can this blithering idiot be so blind? Is it the bubble liberal journalists live in, or are drugs involved? I'm just saying..
My lord, it's been seventy years, and you're picking on the old guy.
You have nothing to say about the validity of his statements nor do you successfully make him out to be a hypocrite. I think you're trying to be ironic but no dice you need to be a little more perceptive than that. You seem to be attacking him by proxy of his once employee and failing to realize that his British associate might not be too unreliable. That's a little different than accusing a news organization for straight out lying. You see, to lie you have to first know what the truth is and then choose to veer from it, which is something Howell didn't do. He was gullible not lying.
Besides what's wrong with Fox News being completely right-wing? Can someone explain this for me?
And since 2007 these networks have been creating a cult of personality around one political leader, and they all agree that their fawning coverage and bias is unprecedented. I guess old Howie missed that.
It's the impurities! That smell!! Every time I take a breath the revolting stench of… them. The impure. I must keep them out. No more their stench in my nostrils, if I close my nostrils. That's it. I'll close my nostrils and never breathe again………………………
Relax and ignore this joker. "Sensationalist yellow tabloid journalism?" I work in the heart of DC and see first hand what's reported daily by Fox and the so-called other news outlets.
The slavering, in-the-tank, alleged 'reporting' conducted by the MSM since Obama came onto the scene is simply obscene. Fox is the only news outlet that comes close to reporting the truth, "fair and balanced," as the court of public opinion is now showing with its collective remote controls.
The fury of the MSM at being called out by Fox and shown for what it really is in the tone of the post above, reeking of high-snark, by alleged professionals like whatshisname above is palpable. His desperation, so common among such "tinglers" as Matthews and Olberman, just to name the two most egregious offenders, is immediately evident in his post, the 'superior attitude' content of which appears polished by decades of sneering at the hoi polloi.
Get used to it 'arealjournalist." It ain't going away.
Wow…there's a face that'll scare children and bruise fruit! Odd how "the promotion of one political party" = "a news organization that lets both sides be heard." I guess it's NOT plugging Obama 24/7 after bashing Bush 24/7 after praising Clinton 24/7 like CNN, huh? Thanks for clearing that up, Howell.
Raines has one thing right, MSNBC is not a major news network. Why else would he only single out Fox if he thought otherwise? I am still waiting for the follow up to the McCain affair story the Gay Lady published while objectively covering the 2008 presidential campaign. I understand none of the facts were true but the story was.
Butch Butch
Look I am no zoologist but I think you have it wrong. A Fox does not I repeat not smell her own hole. Unless she is a call girl and you are paying her a lot of money …. but enough about your private life.
No the animal that smells its own hole would be a donkey. See where you went wrong……
OK let's get this straight
"Howell's concern is related to our own political system" — No Howell's concern is for his own fascist control over the national narrative of the press.
Let's assume that Fox News was what Howell states that it is and you imply as Howell's apologist. Let's assum that Beckel, Colmes, Rivera et al did not work for them and it was all Hail the Tea Party all the time.
So What? You mean to tell me there are no media that accept a leftist viewpoint. Get a grip.
I sat there and watched the first few days of Rathergate as every liberal hack in the county downplayed and apologized for the blantant manufacture of documents to hurt a presidentialcandidate simply because he was a Republican. I have yet to hear anyone in the press decry the liberal bias that promoted and coused this.
So if a Conservative wants to state his viewpoints in the public arena you'll forgive me if I have to laugh out loaud at your liberal nonsense.
They pass this with there reconciliation nonsense and they are going to have the legal battle of the ages as Mark Levin descends on the Supreme Court.
And if they end round that …. well there days will be numbered for sure…………..
I am afraid it would be a short fight…..
The notorious PAB would put a cap in Raines ass and Penn would cry…..
Indeed… it's amazing how Biden can still pull that off after all these years.
Check out this shameful state of affairs at the "Gray Lady" as reported by the good folks over on Powerline:
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2010/03/025...
"All the News That's Fit to Print?"
Ha! What a joke!
More aptly their motto these days should be "Morality for thee, but not for me."
Hahahahahahahahahahaha…
Thanks for the gut-busting laugh! It was necessary…
I wished they did. Unfortunately, they live in ours.
Love the mug shot of Mr. Howell (where's Luvee?)
Fantastic monologue.
Bizzarro world comes to mind.
i posit that mr. raines uses curlers at night to get that carefree do
I can count the liquor blossems on his face from my house…
TY Howard for your support. I can always depend on the people at the NYT!!!!!!!!
Matt Damon for an Oscar 2011!!!!!!!
Time for another cig.
[...] Daily Gut: The Pathetic Howl of Howell Raines [...]
I 100% agree. Schanberg's credibility is as lost for me as it is for you. I don't know that a news outlet's reliability can be fairly judged, however, from one person who clearly lacks/lacked solid analytical skills. Similarly, you may recall that in 2006, Sean Hannity reported that WMDs had been found in Iraq despite Fox's own reports from other shows to the contrary, and failed to properly verify and source check the assertion for hours. It's fair to knock his credibility and journalistic attention to detail based on that incident, but not fair, in my opinion, to impugn the entire network for it.
"Raines never was neutral between Republicans and Democrats. Fox is not one bit more partisan than the NYT. Arguably less so."
I said nothing of whether or not he was being *sincere* about his stated concern, which is what you address. I simply wrote what his stated concern is. I don't think what his stated concern is can be argued when he clearly states, "For the first time since the yellow journalism of a century ago, the United States has a major news organization devoted to the promotion of one political party.”
"What the hell are you talking about? Let´s leave aside the fact that Cambodia was not occupied…"
What I said was that Schanberg was advocating for self-governance over foreign occupation. Both of these paths were, at the time, possibilities being discussed. The path initially followed was the self-governance under the Khmer Rouge. Once that regime collapsed, Cambodia was, in fact, invaded and occupied by Vietnam.
"…or that Schanberg had no excuse for being wrong when many at the time knew better."
I hope that I'm not understanding you correctly here. Are you suggesting that holding an dissenting/minority opinion about a proper course of action becomes an "inexcusable" act once hindsight enables us to determine that such dissenting opinion did not correctly envision future events?
I should not have mentioned Iraq. It appears to distract from the main points being made both ways.
"You are rewriting history. No wonder you like the NYT."
I don't write history, only opinions. What I wrote, what your reply scantly addressed, and what I continue to believe, is that Mr. Thalberg is mistaken when he wrote that Schanberg's New York Times pieces were an example of "a major news organization devoted to the promotion of one political party." While the NYT–which, incidentally, I never said that I liked–may have liberal leanings, that is very different from a devotion to a particular political party.
I'm not certain why discussions/debates regarding political issues seem to degenerate these days (at least online) into name-calling and dogmatic cheerleading. I believe that Fox News is capable of misrepresenting itself and has been misleading in the past about certain corporate aims. At the same time, I recognize that the New York Times has plenty of writers and editors who are full of s**t. I did not say anything that impugned Mr. Thalberg's politics or intelligence. I simply disagreed about the two situations described as being comparable. It's too bad that this isn't a forum that permits even this small degree of dissent without incurring disparaging ad hominem remarks. As that is clearly the preferred vibe, I'll refrain from posting any further comments.
