All of these stars have had their pictures taken and/or partied with Hugo Chavez: their happy faces cheek to mottled cheek with the latest trend in socialist splendor.
He is after all, proof that it can happen! The third way! A new Castro! An anti-capitalist David, taking down that Yankee Goliath!
Being around him, means you’re more than just an overpaid movie star, you’re an overpaid movie star who matters.
So I gotta wonder. Where are these jackasses now?
Well, in the past few weeks we’ve seen Chavez blame America for the Haitian earthquake – furious, I imagine, over having to watch Marines save lives, while he farts into a hemorrhoid pillow.
And then of course, he’s nationalized a grocery chain, devalued currency, and beaten the crap out of his own citizens. As police fire tear gas and rubber bullets at innocent protestors (who always knew that Chavez’s anti-Americanism was just a cloak to hide his authoritarian rule, economic incompetence and profound halitosis), I ask again: where is Hollywood?
Why hasn’t Penn come out and condemned Chavez for insulting our compassionate military?
And what of Glover – surely an earthquake machine is even too far-fetched for his goofy mind?
And how about Naomi Campbell – surely she could take a moment from beating her assistants, to tell Hugo to lighten up.
But I expect too much. After all, these are celebrities – they treat political issues like Fendi handbags – a stylish flourish to hide their shallowness and the insecurity it breeds.
And, really: coming out against a tyrant won’t earn you points with James Cameron – so why bother. Hell, those protestors deserve it anyway. They don’t even shop at Fred Segal!

In 2005 I wrote a piece in my blog titled "The Actor & The Mullahs" which focused on a piece written in The Boston Globe titled "The Philosopher & The Ayatollahs" http://www.boston.com/news/globe/ideas/articles/2...
Written by Wesley Yang, the article is about the French philosopher Michel Foucault, who, in 1978, "went to Iran as a novice journalist to report on the unfolding revolution. His dispatches — now fully available in English thanks to Kevin Anderson & Janet Afary's translation of Foucaults writings ( which can be found in their book "Foucault and the Iranian Revolution") — shed some light on the illusions of intellectuals in our own time."
The article was rather timely and relevant when one remembers that at that time Sean Penn was in Tehran to cover the "election" for the San Francisco Chronicle, and that he and the Hollywood friends have a propensity for supporting dictators, such as Castro, Saddam and the Mullahs of Iran.

One had to wonder why Penn–who was happy to hobnob with the Mullahs— showed NO interest to visit Iran while the University Student massacres of 1999 were taking place or when Iranian intellectuals, artists, filmmakers, journalists, etc. were being assassinated and when Iranian women were being sold in advertised sex-slave auctions in the Persian Gulf nations?

Hugo Chavez who called Bush a murderer for taking down terrorists and kept smelling Brimstone has now killed two of the protestors last I heard on the news. But this is not the first time he has had his goons shoot into crowds of Venezuelan protestors.

I think they see people like Chavez as an alternative to…something. Globalization. Capitalism. Anything to do with the United States. Chavez is a native. He's made it clear he's not buying into the world system that the U.S. supposedly dominates. He's a homegrown, independent leader. And he proclaims himself a socialist. Chavez is a Hollywood leftist's wet dream. I'd almost call it naive if these people weren't grownups, some of whom have lived through a lot more history than I have. I don't know how anyone can look at the last 50 years and believe in the good intentions of another little El Jefe.
Sort of off topic, but I'm watching the current episode of NCIS. So far we've got a dirty bomb being planted by…ready?…a South American drug cartel. And we had a nice little lecture from Ziva about the rule of law and how cutting corners makes us just as bad as the terrorists. I have no problem with this concept, but being lectured in the middle of an episode – in a far from timely manner, I might point out – is a bit…well, let's say it breaks the fictional spell.

It takes my breath away. See, in the story, Congress is about to vote on a really crappy but expensive defense spending bill. It was sure to be voted down, so the Evil Corporation conspired with other evil people to construct some dirty bombs and threaten to set them off in DC. They made it look like the work of a drug cartel to hide the real culprits. Spurred on by the new "terrorist threat," Congress was sure to pass the bill – which meant mucho dollars for the Evil Corporation. So (try to follow the logic) the REAL terrorist organization was…the Evil Corporation!
It's official. NCIS has gotten silly. And preachy. I could handle silly – preachy, not so much.

The key tenet of liberal celebrities is they hate seeing other people get rich yet just love rolling in the money and endorsing unproven things at our expense. They can all go piss off.

LMAO, I just watched that NCIS show too, i called the bad guy as soon as they introduced him and it was mentioned that he was a private contractor hired by the government. So what 15 minutes into the show i knew the rest of the story was smoke and mirrors until the suprise twist ending that a corperation did it. NCIS just entered Law and Order land.
And yes i caught the part where Ziva said that our reasons for fighting terrorism are the same reason terrorist's fight us.

Maybe the life of Hugo Chavez could be named "The Designated Hitter of Venezuela" based on Chavez' love of baseball and his unearned rise to the presidency. His life role will parallel Idi Amin's and will include a Hollywood worshipper(s) that becomes embedded into Chavez's twisted and corrupt government. Eventually, the sycophant says something that infuriates Chavez, cementing his end of usefulness; he suddenly "overdoses" on drugs or dies in a car crash. While the Scottish doctor in "The Last King of Scotland" was a fictional character, Hollywood celebs that adore Chavez are abundant and will make casting the role very easy.
