Daily Gut: Thank the Media for Climate Change Hysteria

Well, not really a flurry.
More like twelve. But if climate change apostles can exaggerate facts, why can’t I?
Anyway, I got one missive, which I condensed, from a guy named Jonathan. It goes:
…the Gallup poll Mr. Gutfeld mentioned … on climate change took place in 1991…Climatology is still a relatively new science and progress in the last 18 years has been substantial. There has … been a good deal of skepticism among scientists…and more recent polls show that this research has changed most of their minds. It is irresponsible to cite a poll almost 20 years old without noting it.
Jonathan then cited a poll where a large majority of respondents accept human activity as a global warming cause.
Fair enough – but Johnny, my Gregalogue was about how critical viewpoints regarding global warming hysteria aresuppressed in favor of opinions kowtowing to pre-ordained, biased assumptions. That’s why I asked if any one had heard of this Gallup Poll revealing heavy skepticism. It didn’t matter when that poll was published, only that it was dismissed by people like you.
But you’re right, there has been more research since then. Take that infamous “Hockey stick” chart – you know, the graph that showed flat temperatures for centuries, then suddenly in the last century, rises sharply like the end of a hockey stick. Global warming apostles once called it proof of recent, devastating human-caused global warming.
On closer examination though, experts found that real, very old instances of global warming had been erased in order to make it look like the planet was heating up now.
Oddly, we all heard about this amazing, conclusive evidence when it first came out. But when it was later revealed to be a piece of crap?
Nothing.
Look, there are more examples of bias that I can give you – but you’re right – this is a new science, which is exactly why this hysteria is so criminal. The fact is, if a scientific conclusion is embraced well before the science is thoroughly examined – and then infected with a sense of overzealous activism by folks with a thirst for recognition and power – it’s no wonder that critical viewpoints are ultimately “smoothed out,” like discrepancies on a hockey stick chart.
Anyway, Jonathan, thanks for the letter and the photos.

This global warming / climate change thing is all about control. Now some are calling for a planetary limit of one child per couple… Because people are a strain on the planet.

And might I add that the incriminating e-mails, which go back to the early research all right, also go back to a period as recent as two weeks ago. Their "settled science" is anything but. And despite sitting here with my teeth chattering form the cold, I'm wiling to accept that there might, or might not, be such a thing as global warming (or the more currently correct "climate change." In fact, as for climate change, I'd be an idiot not to believe in it. It's been going on for billions of years). What I am not willing to accept is that human activity is anything more than an insignifcant portion of it. And I have yet to see any genuine science to disprove that point of view.
Actually, the idea that there is a scientific "consensus" on global warming derives from the 1996 IPPC report, which would be only five years after the gallup poll. So, the so called consensus was not based upon the maturing of the science, but rather on the fact that the majority of scientists that signed the IPPC report were not in fact involved in Climate Science, Geology, or Meteorology. Additionally, a large percentage of those who signed the report did so before the report was finalized.
But who the hell cares about the facts when the earth is devolving into a flaming ball of boiling polar bear soup!

Global Warming is an answer to a question looking for a solution to prove the question. Somehow they had the answer to this question years ago and spent the last 25-30 years trying to figure out a way to prove it. They couldn't do that honestly and resorted to "tricks" and "hockey sticks" to make the solution look legit.
I have a current poll that proves everyone on BH must send me a shiny new nickel. The fact that the polling sample was one individual (me) is irrelevant. If you do not send me a nickel you are probably a racist and maybe a unicorn fetishist as well.

the best part of the hysteria croud is they never ever show temps prior to 1400, why is that i wonder? could it be it was far warmer then than today? i don't remember buicks and hummers back then, no 747 flights to the west indies ( sorry the earth was still flat back then). when put in context for the 1300's, we are still cold today. hint to the warmers, the climate always changes, just yesterday the sky was falling here, and it was frozen little flakes, not flakes like the warmers crowd, but as in snow.

I'm avoiding all those posts. Not because I doubt their veracity, I really just don't want to hear about them. That might not be the smartest approach, but I'll leave that issue to the folks who can read that and not want to throw up.

And, interestingly enough, the Southern Hemisphere seems to be heating up right now, just as the Northern Hemisphere is cooling off. I saw a documentary several years ago (which I cannot find any longer on YouTube). It debunked the IPCC scientists' convenient theory. It also included an interview with a leader of a poor African country who previously took funds only to find out later, in exchange for building a hospital, it could only be run on solar power. The country was completed restricted from developing their own vast resources (coal, oil & gas). Unfortunately, the hospital was without power most of the time, as was the village. Foreign aid to underdeveloped countries doesn't have just strings attached…. it puts ropes around their necks and places world wide control of their country, resources and economies.
The scientific community proved the IPCC data models were wrong years ago. The disclosed e-mails just support this. It is much more than "Climate Change". Yeah…. it's been doing that for thousands of years!
I sent you a nickel anyway, but I studied ballistics theory at East Anglia, so the area of probability for where the sent nickel may actually come to rest is quite large, and probably off the mark regardless…

And that is the way things ought to be. The media at large should point out the "really bad things" that are going on. And the good things, too. Just report it and make it available to be widely known. Make note of the outrage. Make note of the support. Wait until the story changes. Repeat.
The problem is we can't agree on what is "good" and "bad". And I guess I described what "journalism" should be like. And with blogs like all the BIG sites, the game has changed.
It's a good thing we still have the freedom to read and write what we want.

This was touched on in an earlier thread; the method the Left utilizes to manipulate the argument, i.e. they define the rules that must be followed when debating the arguments of the day.
Greg then went into some very important points about the larger issue. And all the comments have been beating the "talking points" drum from the (obviously) logical side. But we need to be careful and confront our habit of falling into their trap and following their "game rules" as stated in the earlier thread.
And not one comment yet here about that issue. I enjoy the fun stuff that goes on in these forums. But I also understand that we are playing more than a sandlot game. Let's get our professional game faces on, people.

Since when is a "poll" indicative of anything except a count of how many people have a similar opinion? There is NOTHING inherently CORRECT about a poll. It is just a count, and as such, (as is often the case) just the totality of so many "dumb opinions", "misinformed opinions", "wrong opinions", etc. The list goes on and on. Regardless, of HOW MANY people believe something, DOES NOT make the opinion CORRECT. It's simply a moral relativist ASSUMPTION that by counting something (actually this is an old Sesame Street routine), its "truthfulness" can be ascertained. THIS IS NOT TRUE. While there is an obvious limit on man's intelligence, there is NO LIMIT on his stupidity.

PS: There was a good reason the seafarers of old were constantly trying to find "The Northwest Passage."
It most likely existed at one point, allowing sailors to navigate through the Arctic in the summer months. When it cooled down again, it gradually disappeared from living memory and all that remained were the stories.

In fact, real scientists are happy to have their theories challenged. That's how theories become stronger: by surviving tougher and tougher challenges.
I apologize if this link has been posted in some thread here before this. Heard it mentioned earlier today and finally got around to look for it. Michael Chrichton gave a speech from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA on January 17, 2003. He really nailed it about this whole climate change debate. This bit really pulled it together, and it's not even the conclusion.
This fascination with computer models is something I understand very well. Richard Feynmann called it a disease. I fear he is right. Because only if you spend a lot of time looking at a computer screen can you arrive at the complex point where the global warming debate now stands.
Nobody believes a weather prediction twelve hours ahead. Now we're asked to believe a prediction that goes out 100 years into the future? And make financial investments based on that prediction? Has everybody lost their minds?

I think the same thing has been done to meteorology thats been done to anthropology: politicized and corrupted and warped so that the science no longer means anything but a tool towards a more malicious end. But then, even when I was studying geography (which included a bit of meteorology) back in the late 80s there was the underlying twaddle of how humans were screwing up weather patterns, so its hard to say when exactly when this sort of nonsense came into play. But its the same thing: junk "science" has replaced actual thought among a populace that has been POORLY schooled in the scientific method.

National Geographic doesn't do any actual science. James Hansen and NASA (GISS) have repeatedly been caught fudging data and refuse to respond to FOIA requests. Try 'Watts Up With That' website for a few hundred reasons why. Dissenters at GISS have to resign to get published.
Climate-oriented 'scientific organizations' like CRU have an enormous financial incentive to embrace Global Warming, and in fact the 'raw' and 'adjusted' data pass through very few, very self-interested hands, The current Climategate scandal – with its manipulated and falsified data, rigged peer review process, and incompetent code-writing – will give any fair reader doubts about how trustworthy those hands are. Maybe you could try to catch up.
There is a POSSIBILITY that the world will end tomorrow, or we will be invaded by aliens from outer space. It's not science unless it can stand up to scrutiny and the facts are solid. These are not scientist they are morally corrupt statisticians manipulating the data to say what they want it to. They are not looking for solutions to real environmental issues they are creating an industry where Al Gore's Company can dump 100's of tons of Iron Oxide (Rust) into the ocean to make huge algae blooms so he can sell the carbon credit to industry. It isn't about changing behavior, it's about making money, taxing everyone and taking control.
The propaganda is EVERYWHERE. I got a Christmas card which, on the back, had a little blerb about how climate change/global warming/global cooling/the population bomb/nuclear winter/acid raid or whatever the scario de jour is today was destroying the two species of penguins in Antarctica.
If you were enlightened in the ways of math and science, you would know that correlation does not prove causality EVER. This is the major problem with research on climate change. I agree that this country's math and science abilities are going down the tubes. Instead of teaching our children the scientific method, we are teach theories as fact (i.e. Climate Change) and we are teaching theology and philosophy as science (i.e. Darwinism). If we would actually get back to the basics…reading, writing and arithmetic…we would all be a lot smarter and able to discern for ourselves what is fact and what is not.
What if those organizations you mentioned are rife with ideologues bending to political goals, instead of actual SCIENTISTS? What then?

According to the National Weather Service website, today's temperature in Hell, MI (an unincorporated town just outside Pinckney, MI) is currently 17 degrees F with snow showers and winds at 20 to 30 mph. This small town of Hell pretty much freezes over every year, despite Gore's Global Warming claims.

case in point:
One of the more blatant examples is this station in my home county of Henderson, Hendersonville, NC. Note to the right in the satellite shot the extra wide 6 lane Four Seasons Blvd (the biggest street in town) and the bank & its parking lot across the blvd. To the left across 7th Ave is a Lowes parking lot in front of what I assure you is the typical big box home center with its acres of asphalt roof. Off the bottom of the picture are relatively undeveloped woods and a small swamp (beautiful water lilies in season!), but everything off the top of this shot, and i do mean everything for a mile or so, is virtually 100% commercial development- what isn't built on is paved over. This one is all the more egregious given that this entire region is largely heavily forested or rural farm land, making this thoroughly urban site particularly unrepresentative of local conditions and topography. Nice, objective, unbiased data collection, huh?

My husband is a computational astrophysicist. If he operated like these scientists working for the IPCC did, he'd be ridiculed and would lose all chances at funding. That's exactly what should happen to each and every scientist taking an active part in this AGW fraud.
25-30 years ago, right after it became obvious they couldn't sell Global Cooling any longer.
I heard Avery (Unstoppable Global Warming Every 1,500 Years) on the radio. He pointed out that polar bears are actually huge grizzlys (big brothers, cousins). Avery asked, "Do you really believe that they can't live on land?"
35 years ago Time magazine was telling us about man-assisted Global Cooling, and the coming ice-age. I remember being taught about this in school. These are from a June 24, 1974 article.

You know who else might have a financial incentive? Christopher Horner, who writes for this website and works for the Competitive Enterprise Institute which is largely funded by the oil industry.
I'm fascinated to see everyone on here write off NASA just like that. This same group of scientist tried to sell their sky is falling science in the 70s. But then it was the fastly approaching ice age. That did not work. So they have been working to sell this man made global warming for years now to get money and try to get control of the money generated by industrial nations. The earth has been warming and cooling since the formation but man has very little to do with it. Al Gore needs to be put in jail along with all the others that have lied and made up data. The fact we no longer have real journalist is a major problem with this as well.
Of course. How about Roy Spencer,Richard Lindzen,Dennis Avery and S. Fred Singer? I'm sure you feel that Algore is more credible than anyone I just mentioned so get off your soapbox. We all know that your qualification for "credibility" is simply that they agree with you.
Can you name for me or produce one article or climate forecast from 10 years ago that predicted the temp results of the last 10 years? Doesn't the fact the the projections were so spectacularly wrong give you pause?
No. There is no "global conspiracy" to eventually make Al Gore a billionaire. He's merely taking advantage of the overall scam to enrich himself at our expense. India, etc. are "going along" with the "evil scheme" because THEIR governments see it as an opportunity to skim money from the industrialized West for THEIR benefit. AGW (anthropogenic global warming) is pure, unadulterated crap. It's as phony as the Piltdown Man scam and MUCH more dangerous. Every single "crisis" these eco-nuts have tried to palm off on us has been PROVEN phony as a three dollar bill and STILL an awful lot of people are willing to buy just about anything these scam artists put forward.
Let's take a look at the list of bogus nonsense generated by the "greenie" movements.
1-DDT. Banned because of a phony Rachael Carson film, "Silent Spring." The main premise was that DDT was "killing peregrine falcons and bald eagles by contaminating fish, which, in turn, caused these raptor's eggs to be produced with shells too thin to bear the weight of nesting birds. It was all bogus. DDT had NOTHING to do with eggshell thickness, as largely suppressed research at UNC proved. The result? Millions of HUMANS dead from mosquito-borne diseases that HAD been controlled by the application of DDT.
2-Cyclamates. Banned because some Canadian "researchers" claimed ingestion of this artificial sweetener "caused bladder cancer" in rodent testing. What they left out was that, translated to humans, one would have to ingest 2 CASES of soda pop sweetened with cyclamates, every day for 50 YEARS just to raise one's CHANCE of bladder cancer by 10%.
3-Acid Rain. Was supposed to eventually kill us all off by causing our drinking water supplies to acidify. Nonsense.
4-Hole in the Ozone Layer. More BS. CFC's have NOTHING to do with it. It's caused by the lack of direct, solar radiation during Antarctic winter. Solar radiation, impinging on the upper atmosphere GENERATES ozone, which then decays back into its constituent oxygen atoms. What the scam DID accomplish was to outlaw Freon just before it's patent with DuPont ran out and just in time for DuPont to market its only viable substitute, the patent for which had YEARS yet to run.
5-Movie Popcorn. Something called, "Science in the Public Interest" convinced movie houses to STOP making their popcorn using coconut oil because, "coconut oil is high in cholesterol" which "everyone knows" is bad for you. The result is movie popcorn is markedly less tasty. Oh yes. They ALSO convinced them to cut back on the salt because "salt causes high blood pressure," ignoring the FACT that salt is ESSENTIAL to human life.
The list goes on and on, and it rife with stupid, idiotic, UNscientific premises designed to increase the do-gooders efforts towards controlling every aspect of our lives.
First of all it has not been proven that "the UK's Climate Research Unit are liars" . It's not clear yet if data was destroyed. It's not clear yet what the implications of the emails are. Even if I accepted the worst case scenario that ALL of those scientists were TOTALLY fraudulent, which I think is highly unlikely , and has not been shown at all, their research would still be only a fraction of the overall research around the world. You will probably claim that because there may be issues with their work, then that invalidates all the other work.
Why would I be mad at Al Gore? You guys are the ones obsessed with Gore. If Gore died tomorrow the issues would be the same. THe way you personalize this issue and make it all about Al Gore is an illustration of your weird unbalanced view of the situation. I assure you that people in India, Germany , Japan, etc who are concerned about this don't care about Al Gore one way or the other.
No, the fact that they can't predict the exact temperature doesn't give me pause, and I'm not sure why it gives you pause.
Germany and Japan want to skim money from the industrialized west? Huh? Can you at least get your conspiracy theory internally consistent.
