Daily Gut: Obama’s Wartime Egg Timer
by Greg GutfeldSo, President Obama’s speech wasn’t a bad one, but it wasn’t a great one either. If anything, it reminded me a little of Osama bin Laden’s speech – the one where he told us exactly when he was going to take down the World Trade Center. And remember the speech given right before Pearl Harbor – the one where the Japanese Imperial Headquarters let us know when the planes would arrive? Eerily similar.
I kid. Those speeches never took place – because our enemies never tell us when they’re going to attack. But we’re different. Not only do we tell them when and where, but also, how long before we’ll go home. Terrorists? Alas, they have patience in spades. A few years is nothing when you`re looking at an eternity with 72 virgins.
But look: this is war, and we need to call it war, and when we fight a war, we must back the President. So I`m with him 100 percent. But I wish he`d, you know, embrace the damn thing – and say we`re going to destroy these bastards, minus the egg timer. And to me, the coach shouldn’t talk strategy out in the open until after the game, when we`ve beaten the pants off the other team.
Which is why I didn`t find the speech inspirational – and I wonder if those cadets did too. My guess is, they want to be led by a winner, not a cost manager. The speech was less a rallying cry, and more a statement by a CEO that “we`ve had a rough year, there will be changes, and you know, watch your expenses.” Even more, this is coming from a guy who will spare no cost when it comes to health care reform or global warming crud – and yet he’s worried about a few billion bucks to ensure the safety of our country and our brave troops? Those priorities should come before public options and carbon offsets.
But enough with the petty griping. When it comes to battle, we all stand together, and I congratulate the President in finally moving this ball forward. If General McCrystal is happy, then so am I.
Plus, I`m also grateful that I`ve finally learned how to pronounce Paki-STON, as well as Tali-BON!

It was also reminiscent of that famous Churchill speech: "We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, until exactly June 14, 2011, and then well pack up and go home."

Guys, guys! Obama was a community organizer! We all know how important that is in military training. Those career military guys and West Point graduates can't hold a candle to the intense battle strategy training Obama must have received while organizing communities. Obama knows how to win a war at least as good as he knows how to run a successful business, reform healthcare, and honestly win elections without using voter fraud and corrupt organizations like ACORN.
On the other hand, we might be screwed.
It would have been a thing of beauty if all those cadets would have snapped to attention, did an about-face and stood with their backs to this buffoon (PBUH).
I didn't watch this speech, or any other of hi9s speeches including the inauguration. From what a friend told me this morning apparently Hussein again with his sniveling and whining blamed President Bush. This quisling man-child should have never run for president, which he isn't eligible for anyway, if his idea of being president is to prattle incessantly like a spoiled brat about his predecessor. President Bush, a real leader, never whined about the pitiful democrat president that came before him.

Exactly. I never understood the left's reasoning for this. Wanting to spend trillions (with a "T") on things that will do no good or further bankrupt our country, while a not wanting to spend even a dime on the security and safety of this country.
He's not good enough to be a quisling. To be a quisling, you have to actually take your enemy's side. So far, Obama hasn't been willing to pick a side for anything. Being a quisling requires a decision, and making decisions is above his pay grade.

In so many accounts of the speech I've read today, a large number state that the speech was not exactly "Churchillian." That's for damn sure. Thanks for posting Churchill's words–the contrast is certainly telling, isn't it?
Great one, Greg. I was happy to see at least one Combat Infantry Badge on a Cadet, so a minimum of one Cadet was already a combat veteran, he had a Purple Heart as well. My son is headed to the USMA next fall, that means he will graduate in 2014, so let's all make sure Barry is back in Kenya for two years by then. I wouldn't want my son to service as an officer under the pretend President.

The Healthcare reform they want to enact cannot be put into action for there is NO IT infrastructure or personal ID agreed upon and implemented…both of which are required to do what they demand they WILL do….and none of them have A CLUE what all that will involve. It is beyond the ability of government OR Congress OR the WH to Make It Happen.
And Afghanistan CANNOT be effectively put under the control of ANY central Government without killing all of the tribal chiefs and warlords throughout the country….and they are the ONLY ones able to keep ANY peace on a local basis….and there will NEVER be a national police or military force that will fire upon their own people. Forget it. Better to assassinate the taliban and al queda leaders with black actions and CIA that mount an escallation of the army. Will do nothing but spend money and American lives for naught.

Actually, they are creating New "Community Organizing Type" Civil Affairs Units as we speak. My son recently moved from the Infantry to Civil Affairs and is currently assisting with the structure of a new Brigade.

Sorry to say but I have to disagree. It would not have been "a thing of beauty" but a huge blot on the honor of the cadet corps. I doubt if one in 100 of them actually likes the guy but they understand that he is the Commander in Chief and they understand their duty. These are real men and women who know the difference between honor and cheap theatrics. I am sure that Obama chose West Point as a venue for his speech in order to give it the gravitas that he so plainly lacks.

I do not believe in his offered exit date. For me winning is the scenario that minimizes the number of needless American deaths. Indefinite occupation of Afghanistan is a sure lose scenario, money wise and life wise.

I can't stand the way he talks. The way he gives speeches is like he is preaching the gospel to a room of Sunday school children. His inflection drives me crazy.
Now, I think he is applying an interesting strategy to fighting in Afghanistan. The Brits were beaten back, so you don't want to fight like them, and the Russians were beaten back (with our help), so you don't want to fight like them. He's now going to try the French method of fighting, show a mean front and back down like a bitch.
If I were an Afghani with a position in the army or the government, I would be now making plans to leave the country with my family, or else reach an accomodation with the local Taliban to protect myself and my family on the day that the US troops leave according to Obama's announced timetable. The enemy now know when we will be leaving; I'm sure they're dropping hints with the local population as to what the consequences will be for those who cooperate with the Coalition in the interim.
Boy Genius-in-Chief has just made the job for our troops in harm's way infinitely more difficult. Not only are they not receiving the full 40,000 troops requested by the Commander in the Field, but they're arriving nine months too late.
Charity leads me to declare him stupid; the alternative is to believe that he KNOWS the extent of the damage he's doing.

Time to expose how much taxpayer money Obama is snarfing up monthly on White House entertainment. and remind people every time he whines "war is expensive." What did the state dinner for 300 rich guests cost? Humongous luxury tents, chandeliers, air frieght foods, "sustainable magnolia branches" A-List singers – had to have been more than a $$$ MILLION for ONE night's soiree. Imagine how that same amount of money could have spruced up a US outpost in front-line Afghanistan.
Politics, political correctness, and prosecutions of our soldiers have pretty much made sure the army can't win the war anyway. We might as well declare victory and pack up.

That sounds like a great show. I've never seen a Maiden show but recently on VH1 [I'm pretty sure it was VH1] they were showing videos of many tours Iron Maiden did. It was spectacular; they know how to put on a show. There are so many great Maiden songs but I would love to have heard Hallowed Be Thy Name, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, Run To The Hills, Flight Of Icarus, Number Of The Beast , Alexander The Great and Two Minutes To Midnight live.

As for victory, on the campaign trail he didn't seem too ambiguous about what it meant, but since he seems to have forgotten: a smoking crater where you're enemy was standing tends to work well.
Bush and his generals didn't get their sht together in Iraq until the AMERICAN PEOPLE let them know very clearly in 2006 that the clock was ticking.
Obama knows this lesson and is not falling for this "open ended" bullsht argument. Without a deadline, a goal is nothing more than a dream.
