Daily Gut: CNN Perplexed By Talk Radio
by Greg GutfeldSo, fresh from their previous idiocy analyzing Saturday Night Live, CNN has now turned their goofy gaze toward talk radio, in a series of segments designed to examine the psychology behind a phenomenon that gives them fits. In short, they just can’t figure out why conservatives rule talk radio, and why the left is left out in the cold.
Now, only CNN could do this with a straight face. According to the network, some say talk radio is “viciously partisan,” without of course defining “some,” as “people who work at CNN.” And so the segment began, with CNN using a shrink to examine the typical listener, as though he belonged to a rare breed of lizard that dines only on feces.
Check it out, check-it-outers.
So the shrink, probably a devoted NPR fan – dismisses Rush’s popularity as the product of a bullying mentality – that the typical conservative finds safety and security under Rush’s protection in an otherwise friendless universe.
The solution? You could smell it coming: More access to liberal talk radio. According to the nutso radio host Randi Rhodes (who claims she’s not a liberal!), that’s what’s missing. Apparently, the left is banned from talk radio!
I’m sorry, but I don’t see a sign at the clubhouse, saying “no liberal hosts.” The only sign is from the public, who hates them. It’s called supply and demand. The demand is for a conservative viewpoint – and it’s currently being supplied.
What happens when you supply a product for which there is no demand?
You get Air America. Some might call that a noble experiment, but it was neither noble, or experimental. Instead it functioned like a jar of leftwing preserves– a time capsule of corrupt liberal thinking, circa 1977. And, of course, for NPR to succeed, it needs government assistance. For liberal ideas to survive, you need welfare.
So, in short, CNN is right: talk radio is about access. But they’ve got it backwards. The reason why talk radio is conservative isn’t because radio limits access for the left. It’s conservative, because the rest of the media limits access from the right. Other than Fox News, talk radio is the only place you can hear another point of view.
It’s a shame CNN can’t be happy with that. But like a whiny child who needs all the stuffed animals in the toy store, it won’t rest until there’s no opposition. It wants the Fairness Doctrine, when what it really needs is a spanking.
And if you disagree with me, then you’re probably a racist.

Talking supply and demand to these people is an exercise in futility. Economic theory to liberals is limited to Spend Your Way Out of Debt!(tm)
it seems they- The Left- might just get another shot aon talk radio…
Forget the goofy capitalist model of people like/people pay. No, can't have that. How about this:
If your conservative show (Rush?) is successful it should be- what else- TAXED heavily so as to give the poor downtrodded Randi Rhodes of the world a 'fair chance' at a living- and more imporatnt an audience.
Or is it really another audience? They had their shot and it tanked. No, it's more of a DENIAL of audience that's being advanced. If you punish the successful model it will go away.
And THEN you'll be left with 'local community diversity programming'.
Remember, the FCC 'Diversity czar' thinks Hugo Chavez did a bang up job in Venezuela by muzzling their media…
I know Gut already gets this, but as a cured modern liberal, let me make this perfectly clear, this is exactly how they view you.
I'm not kidding, this is not just some weird report that slipped past an editor. This isn't some sort of really bizarre sarcasm. This is what hard core liberals really think of you. They consider you an alien race.
I know several people who'd be quite proud to cite this report as proof they're correct and I'm in need of therapy.
Doesn't CNN have a radio network? They're probably getting beaten by Fox Radio as badly as their TV programs are by Fox News.
Wouldn't it be a hoot if CNN started promoting the Fairness Doctrine? It would give them a chance to beat Fox somewhere, somehow.
Otherwise known as Keynesian Economics.
Already trademarked, Keynesian Economics.
They act like talk radio just recently popped up out of no where. Rush, and others, have been on the radio for a long time.
Idiots.
No one wants to listen to liberal radio shows. Sucks to be them.
Am I the only one who is at the point where I simply roll my eyes when I see/hear this crap? Do those tools really think people are that stupid? Honestly?
Liberal radio doesn't work because their ideas can't stand up to 5 minutes of scrutiny much less two or three hours. 15 second sound bites are not very entertaining and that's all they have.
Rush Limbaugh is the bully? Seems like the Democrats are the ones who ran away with all our lunch money.
and our jobs. and economic growth. and every other thing good and decent in the world.
you know greg, if you or rush wouldn't have mentioned this story at cnn, only 3 people would have ever seen it, that is if three people are brain dead enough to watch cnn?
Liberal viewpoint: C'mon people, this shouldn't be about what a bunch of hicks WANT – it's about what they NEED: they need to have their eyes opened, and their thinking realigned!
Conservative response: What, were you saying something? Sorry, my brain isn't attuned to whiny BS.
maybe they don't understand listening audiences or viewing audiences with more than one brain cell.
I like the fact that Limbaughs response to being called a bully is to say the CNN reporter "should go sit on a fire hydrant and improve her day" . He sure proved her wrong!

I think there needs to be a shift in perspective. We on the right are always complaining about how we are made fun of in the "main stream press", and this CNN video clearly is made to hurt the right.
But… no one is watching CNN, guys. No one is listening to liberal talk show hosts. There is no non-right mainstream media anymore. We have talk radio, we have fox news, our blogs…. sure they have the White House and the Government, but thanks to the internet and talk radio, look how fast their deceptions come to light, and look at how quick even the LEFT is turning on them… liberal bloggers not liking the white house calling them "part of the left wing fringe", and libs in the press like Helen Thomas saying "Leave Fox News alone… because we don't want to be next."
Seems to me the liberals have LOST, and we are watching their dying gasps. Sure they may have temporary power in washington, but it's clear to me that the right has power of ideas these days. SNL, CNN, NYT… these names don't mean anything anymore. The left has lost the country. It's happening now with the media, soon it will go all the way to the top.
Greg Gutfeld is the man. Red Eye rules! CNN can eat poop.
go Greg go Greg its your birthday its your birthday………………….o wait is that raciest?
Actually, I found this clip VERY informative. I look at this report as a mirror for how CNN/MSNBC/Network News are run. Management at the news networks not named "Fox" have always been sympathetic to the liberal cause, and have actively worked to keep conservative views from being broadcast and intelligent debate from reaching the viewers. That is why the HATE Fox News and its record-breaking ratings, and that is why they view talk radio as exclusive – because THEIR business was exclusive…until Mr. Murdock decided to make some money in news.
It's always funny to me when people in the liberal media complain about Rush. They created him.
If they would report the news impartially — if they would represent both sides of the debate fairly — if they would stop demonizing conservatives and canonizing liberals — then Rush would fade away naturally.
Greg!!!
ABSOLUTELY Great column, man. I dont get a chance to read every time…but today was awesome. Very well done my friend. And….since I DONT disagree….I prove Im not a racist…..(HILARIOUS…I LOVE IT) Deep it up.
Like most liberal muckers, that so called 'shrink' doesn't have a clue what's she's talking about. Rush isn't the bully, he's the guy who steps in front of the bully and defends the little guy. The reason liberal talk shows fail to flourish is because they stink.
Let's include the full quote of what Rush said: "This is just hilarious. You know, it's 20 million, Carol, but (laughing) Oh. You know what, Carol? You need to go sit on a fire hydrant and improve your day. (laughing) That's the Media Tweak of the Day. He's so vicious! He's such a bully! He's even bullying our CNN stalker reporter. "
The fact that you're trying to use that quote against him is the exact reason why he said it in the first place. As you can see by reading the full quote. Congrats! You're braindead!
You are wrong: Liberal economic theory is Welfare + COLA
I am encouraged that the liberal mental disorder is curable. What type of medication did you employ? Maybe we could test it in the drinking water for Berkley. If it can work there it will work everywhere.
Well, the two or three who listen to Air America are.
Don't take the brown acid, Don't take the brown acid!!!! Apparently these people did not hear that announcement at woodstock, and unfortunately for us, they found their way into our schools and public office.
better watch it, Bill Schulz may think that Welfare + COLA is state sponsored cocaine…
No , he proved her to be a brainless twit. We already knew she was wrong.
At least CNN admits that conservative talk show listeners are usually better educated, since the left is constantly saying we're all just a bunch of tea-bagging rednecks who brainlessly follow whatever talk-show host they happen to be bashing that day.
Once again, CNN astounds with their reporting?
That CNN has to try to define why talk radio is predominately conservative and have a pshrink attempt to explain the phenomenom illustrates their inability to see even the simplest of truths; progressives are idiots.
"The fact that you're trying to use that quote against him is the exact reason why he said it in the first place".
I see , he proves he's not a nasty piggish bully by saying a nasty piggish thing. That IS brilliant!
Give them enough to shut up then deprive them of the knowledge of options outside of what is offered, then you have them.
Except for the ridiculous "bully" psychologist, I think the CNN report was pretty fair.
Of course, like all discussions of the success of conservative talk radio, this report ignored the obvious reason for this success:
The majority of people listening to talk radio are going to/from work.
The majority of people with jobs are not liberals!
No, Rush IS bullying the U.S. government, don't you see? The poor government, with their Democrat-owned houses of Congress and Presidency, and their power to legislate, and their vast military power can't stand up to a guy that gets 3 hours/day to TALK on AM radio in select cities.
Welcome to the inside of the liberal mind. All you have to do is look at yourself as a constant victim. Damn the circumstances. Oh, and counter any argument with "well, you're a racist."
Hey Ken, I'm a liberal (at least compared to most people here) and I listen to talk radio on the way home from work too. Imagine that!
"for NPR to succeed, it needs government assistance. For liberal ideas to survive, you need welfare."
Sums it up quite nicely I think.
I know why most conservatives listen to talk radio. Because they can't read.
Now that CNN has "figured out" why conservative talk radio is so successful, they should now be able to counter with a liberal talk show that will have great ratings. If they beleive they have the answer then they should put their money where their mouths are and prove it.
I know why liberals don't have a clue, they only read the headlines!
And 5-Year Plans, don't forget those.
"The poor government, with their Democrat-owned houses of Congress and Presidency, and their power to legislate, and their vast military power can't stand up to a guy that gets 3 hours/day to TALK on AM radio in select cities."
That would be hysterically funny if it wasn't so pathetic.
Ha ha, a liberal putting their own money anywhere, that's funny. It'll be taxpayer money.
When I was first exposed to Greg (yeah all kinds of tacky jokes there) on Red Eye, I thought he was pretty sophomoric. I have to say that my opinion has changed a good deal over time. I think there is some real truth in this paragraph :
'So, in short, CNN is right: talk radio is about access. But they’ve got it backwards. The reason why talk radio is conservative isn’t because radio limits access for the left. It’s conservative, because the rest of the media limits access from the right. Other than Fox News, talk radio is the only place you can hear another point of view'.
Though they will not do it, CNN should pay attention to that.
One line in the article hit it right on the head ! " Liberal Talk Radio needs to be subsidized " to survive.
But no one listens regardless, not even left wing loons, but that doesn't matter. Just maybe people listen to talk radio to get the truth ? Something liberals are always short of.
God I love how they treat us with respect.
They're losing? We're racists! They're still losing? We're crazy! A psychiatrist said so!
My lord, they're still trying to figure out why Rush and his like are successful and liberal radio fails?
If they didn't learn from the faliure that was Air America, then they'll never understand.
CNN poop = HLN
Union member are u Average Joe ? Who reads whats on your ballots for you ?
OMG!…you libs wrote the playbook on "nasty piggish things". Wait till 2010 and your guys are fighting for their political lives (and they will be). "nasty piggish things" will rise to a whole new level of disgusting vile from them.
That's almost as witty as saying Olberman wishes he was a woman.

Newspapers, CNN and MSNBC are bleeding viewers and readers and they sit there and wonder …."why"…
They are so out of sync with the middle America and they arn't actually reporting the news, just pushing the liberal agenda.
Sarah Palin's Facebook page has as many readers as the Washington Post has in print circulation:

Who in the hell wants to spend their day with a whiny, envious, petulant, leftist child that needs to be spanked and sent to their rooms.
don't you mean Err America?
That's one of the things that annoys/makes me laugh about NPR. By pretending to sound like these oh-so-reasonable objective commentators, they think it's the same as making oh-so-reasonable objective comments. Nonsense delivered in a stentorian voice is still nonsense.
Evening all. I have a question. Not everyone at CNN can be a lefty journalist. There has to be a few centre types (or actually, just real journalists) at that place. What do they do during the story meetings when they see this sort of cheap, slanted work being done? I mean at least one should be putting their hands up and telling everyone that this sort of crap is making them a laughingstock by the viewers. It's crippling their ratings and their revenues have to be in the toilet. Even the person writing the checks should be yelling about this.
Great strategists plan to have their plans expire one year after they are booted out of office
Evidenced by the on-going implosion at the NYT, like the moth to the flame
I would hate to have to live inside a liberal mind 24-7…..what a nasty, unpleasant place that must be. It is beyond my understanding how the average liberal can be so unbalanced in their perception of the world. I just wish they would leave the rest of us alone and quit trying to bully us into their way of life.
Hey look everybody it's less than Average Joe. So tell me this Joe if what you say is true why do Conservative book sales absolutely dominate Liberal book sales on Amazon and NY Times Bestseller Lists??? Why are there more Conservative authors publishing more Conservative ideology based books than liberals do if no one but liberals can read them? Yeah that's what I thought Joe, CNN won't have an answer to that one either so don't feel too stupid.
CNN . . . "like a whiny child who needs all the stuffed animals in the toy store, it won’t rest until there’s no opposition. It wants the Fairness Doctrine, when what it really needs is a spanking."
Excellent, Greg!
I'm recovered too. Glad there's no "recovering", part, as in "recovering alcoholic". I can't see how anyone would relapse into liberalism freely, except in cases where greed made it possible ala Arianna Huffington, Teresa Heinz Kerry, etc.
StoryKeeper, I think the key is GETTING OFF OF the drugs. And wanting a better life, with more happiness. The kind that comes from paying your bills on time, having gratitude, being responsible, thinking for yourself.

I should practice my "NPR voice" for when I'm dealing with relatives.
Yes, but then "nasty piggish things" will be "patriotic dissent" again.
Rush brought out that video clip of Bill Clinton coming away from a funeral, laughing with somebody, until he noticed the cameras were on him! Suddenly his face got very somber (the guy walking with him was still in the middle of laughing with him!) and he even wiped away a fake tear! OMG, I was laughing so hard! Rush showed how phony the Clintons were when everyone else was just not doing the reportage. And DRudge, of course, broke the Lewinsky affair. Not CBS or CNN or NBC, or NPR.
Rush is still doing his thing, though Air America has failed miserably. Drudge is bigger than ever. FoxNews, bigger than ever.
This is how they work it out: There's a high demand for conservative talk radio not because conservatives have a stronger message, but because people are dumb…and people are dumb because they listen to conservative talk radio. The only way to break the cycle of stupidity is to force people to listen to liberals via a "Fairness Doctrine". Once you've listened to a few hours of Randi Rhodes, you will be so brilliant that you'll vote Democrat for the rest of your life.
And he's ENTERTAINING!
NPR is not that entertaining. Informative sometimes, yes, but not entertaining.
NPR is like fiber cereal, and Rush is Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch.
How about "Olbermann wishes he had a REAL Harvard degree"?
NO, it's OK- feel as stupid as you want to.
You said "God". LOL!
Ken Jennings does. He'll show the kid how to put on a condom the "queer" way.
Conservative talk radio hosts and pundits seem to sell A LOT of books. But don't let logic get in the way of your ego.
You just don't get it, do you? Do liberals simply not have the power of critical thinking? Look at the whole quote to get the context. He purposely said it to appear as the caricature the left sees him as, and to get your type to bite, and guess what? You bit! It's as if your brain simply shuts off at the word "day". The fire hydrant quote is the setup, the comments after that are the payoff. Get it? Sheesh!
It was a joke. If conservatives couldn't read this site wouldn't exist. Jeez.
Listened to Air America a few times. Really only need to listen for a minute or two…..
Host: I hate Bush
Caller: You are so right, I hate him too.
Host: What about Haliburton?
Caller: Yup, hate them too.
Host: Conservatives are mind numbed robots.
Caller: Yup, hate them too.
I don't vote against democrats because of Rush — I didn't even listen to Rush when I first voted, and I haven't had to changed my straight Republican vote since then, because I wasn't STUPID even then! I think it is the Leftist lemmings who have been misguided by powerful voices of the LEFT — and through indoctrination and dumbing down of culture and education in America. No wonder we are behind in math and science — they've been too busy teaching the kids leftist propoganda.
The problem with her logic is:
1. The only people who think Rush is a "bully" are liberals, and they don't listen to his show.
2. A lot of people who listen to Rush are active and former military personnel, and they aren't exactly the types of people who seek the comfort of bullies.
3. Only limp-wristed sissies find comfort in sucking up to bullies…sort of like the way libs snuggle up to Castro, Chavez, Chairmain Mao, etc.
We have inherited some very destructive habits from our past generations. Evasion is the most destructive human action of all, its the axiom or root of all evil in man and is currently leading to the destruction of our Republic.
The founders predicted that we would end up in this state at some point so they built in the mechanism to protect our liberty. You think we can answer the call? Are we going to let it fall on our generations watch?
"All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent". Thomas Jefferson
You're quite right, except that Obama doesn't view people on the right as needing therapy. We are the enemy– a far bigger threat than Iran, N. Korea, etc.
(I'm also a reformed liberal. David Horowitz is my hero.)
Yeah I get it, I just don't think it's the clever move you do. I look at the media tweak comment as a justification for saying the nasty stuff, which will please his fans and piss off others. Nothing new under the sun.
I heard that, DKF – had to pull over, too.
Don't forget the mind-numbing hate speeches. They're just afraid of being exposed for who they really are.
Who's losing? Last time I looked Obama won and still had 3+ years to go. Oh sure the right will hammer away at him for everything he says and everything he does but a lot of water can pass under the bridge in that time and until 1012 he's still driving the bus so until then it's people like you who are losers because your guy didn't win, Obama did.
I can read enough to give you another neg approval sub avg joey
Spanking. You betcha
and because he won everyone else will lose big time. Look at the bright side. You may still have a job and country left in 3 years time but I wouldn't bet the rent money on that.
Obama won……………………………………..and Americans lost.
Obama wants control and he has his mindless robots doing the dirty job for him.
What type of medication did you employ?
Probably good old-fashioned Curiosity. It's a risky prescription, though — it can take a while to reach the full effect in some cases, and some people are just naturally resistant to it.
Do you really, then why make a federal case out of what was said? Quite frankly, what's the difference what he said or how he said it? Even if he didn't say anything some jerk on the Left would just make up a vicious quote and attribute it to him.
They're trying to make emotional and intuitive thinking sound like rational thinking. The staff and contributors of This American Life are probably the most egregious example.
Liberals, the anointed sovereigns of moral relativism, are incapable of objective self assessment. They are half sanctimonious narcissists, half self loathing Emo kids. And they're psychoanalyzing us? They're bewildered when they read statistics that married Christians enjoy the most fulfilling sex lives, and feel faint when confronted with the fact that people would rather have jobs than welfare. This pathology explains why they accept horrible ratings over success, which they'd have if only their presentation were were less arrogant and their content less Marxist. They truly believe their views are mainstream and that we are the radicals. What a flatulent bubble they dwell in.
Here's what's gonna happen…. REAL Revolution ! I Can't help it….I Hate Liberal Ideaology !
Liberal-attempting-to-analyze-conservatism = cue-to-tune-out
Depends on the definition of "critical". Thinking is another matter.
WE will tell you what you want… and you WILL want it! Comrade.
Don't want to listen to liberal talk radio because I don't want to be depressed all the time.
The sad thing is that they have your children 5 days a week for at least 6 hours.
