Daily Gut: Signs
by Greg GutfeldSo if there was one thing I learned from the coverage of those big protests last weekend, it’s that signs matter.
See, when the media covers an event they don’t really want to understand, they will focus on the protester’s placards. But as a regular, long-term consumer of all things media (and fiber), I cannot recall this ever happening with the media coverage of the WTO protests, the NOW marches, the no-nuke concerts, the anti-war demonstrations. If I remember correctly (and regular use of Ambien has made it a challenge), the media instead chose to focus on the heroic faces of the protesters. Often, these folks would be huddled together, holding a candle, singing “Give Peace A Chance,” or something equally annoying. Fact is, they were young, heroic, speaking truth to power – so who cares if the signs were offensive: that reality would only undermine the ideal. That’s why you never saw them.
To me, most of the sillier signs this weekend didn’t reflect idiocy, but inexperience. I’m willing to bet nearly all of these folks had never been to a march before, unless it involved Dimes. Which is why the event resembled a picnic, not a protest. Sure, there were some tacky signs, but they were usually held by tacky people who sport more buttons than friends. And the fact is, leftist protesters have had far more experience doing this sort of thing, so they know the drill. They know when to cry, and when to raise a fist(after smashing a chair through a Starbucks window).
Finally, you media types who call these folks crackpots need to realize you’re only doing so because to them, you’re irrelevant. They no longer need you. Those protesters believe in the individual over the system, small over big government, private versus public. They don’t believe in you.
Granted, however, I’ve been known to call people who disagree with me – the Garafalo’s, the Olbermann’s – crazy, too.
But I’m right.
And if you disagree with me, you’re probably a racist.

"Sure, there were some tacky signs, but they were usually held by tacky people who sport more buttons than friends."
Hmm, I didn't realize TGI Friday's employees were at the protests as well.
Couldn't have said it better myself……In this case it's substance over style.
And I ain't no racist! So there!
No, I'm worse that Hitler!! =) Ha!
I agree with you. This protest stuff is new to a lot of us which means we're not bitter yet and I hope we won't become bitter. We've see enough bitter, smug, elitist piglets from the liberal left.
Compare the 2 kinds of rallies…….
LEFT…all carrying pre-made signs made by some union shop somewhere
RIGHT ….all carrying homemade signs from the garage.
And now try to tell me which side is part of a BIG government takeover of our lives…..
Makes me say HHHHMMMMMMMMMMM
"individual over the system, small over big government, private versus public"
Don't they realize they are a threat to the government as we know it? How DARE they think they can make their own decisions, pay their own bills, and think for themselves. Next thing you know they will want the right to own guns, or worship God as they see fit.
My favorite sign:
WE CAME UNARMED
[THIS TIME]
"And if you disagree with me, you’re probably a racist." LOOOOOOOOL Too funny!!!
We didn't even bring signs and we were very awkward…but took tons of video of the signs…people love the read them when we replay the event! There are some clever folks out there! Can't wait to get this stuff up on You-Tube
another thing them leftie queers is good at is knowin why they showed up. I couldnt figure out what we was yellin about health care or taxes or what and all them people with there kids sayin somethign about makin them pay. i thought we was just mad cuz hes from kinya
What got me was the AP article on the protest using a canned stock photo of the LaRouche "Obama=Hitler" sign. They even left the LaRouchePAC.com link in the picture.
Most of the signs were intelligent and even hilarious – I liked the "It doesn't matter what the sign says, you'll call it racist" one.
The left better watch out or the signs will be left at home and the torches and pitchforks will be brought out…
"And if you disagree with me, you’re probably a racist."
In fairness, we might also disagree with you because we are probably hitler!
And if you disagree with me, you’re probably a racist…………………………………………………….or of the MSM……………………..or an ACORN spokesperson.
If I were an intelligent liberal….hmm, broken backspace key, let me start again….
If I were a conniving liberal, I would make the most outlandish sign possible, and then call my bosom buddy over at the NYTimes to let him know where I would be standing so he could get my picture.
"The truly paranoid are clever enough to not *act* paranoid."

If I had gone I would have had a sign that simply said SOCIALISM and then taken an old shoe and kept hitting the word with it.
a concise and very well stated sentiment.
Did anyone carry a sign that read "Long haired freaky people need not apply"?
Hey, that's called flair!
Well, Greg is ignoring the fact that the mistake these people made was by making their own signs rather than carrying the signs that their special interest PAC or union gave them to hold.
–end sarcasm
Anyone see those "Freedom Czar" shirts…I love those!
100 years ago, old men and young boys set up through the night fiddling with dials, tubes and crystals on those new fangled radios, trying to hear what was happening all over the world, people thought they were crazy. Because of these old men and young boys, the new medium of radio was born. I hope we are remember in the same way, through our use of the new media.
I'm commenting from Australia, and even I can pick a ridiculous attempt at trolling. So very sad.
No, but I have a feeling that the sentiment behind "Everybody welcome, come in, kneel down, and pray" was alive and well.
It's no fair to use logic in a fight with the media.
Rope, tree, legislator. Some assembly required.
Heh heh. I wonder how many people caught your cultural reference, Tommy.
Racist! Racist! The funniest time I was called a racist was when I was pan-handled in my own driveway in the liberal utopia of Stockton, California (Forbes most miserable city, 2008). My response was along the lines of, “Kick rocks.” Of, course this was met with the usual (rather racist) epithets and accusations of racism. I think, now, whenever I’m called a racist I’ll say, “You’re a flowerpot.” It’s just as vapid and nonsensical.
Oh my gosh, too funny!
This movement is too big for reductum ad absurdum and straw men, now. It just doesn't work anymore. It's not even mildly funny. It's kinda sad.
Hell, 2010 is going to change things
ROFLOL!

the more the "journalists" minimize this movement, the more they are complicit with the left, the hotter the fire gets.
when we are called racist why can't we say, "Is that illegal"?
No, but I have the feeling you walked past several places with signs that said "Anybody trespassing will be shot on sight."
Maybe the NEA can direct songwriters to come up with more songs the leftists can use at their protests to replace the ones they've been using for the past 40-plus years.
Hey, hey, ho, ho, body odor has got to go.
What do we want? Soap! When do we want it? Now!
I reply with, "I've been called worse."
One of the turning points for me in going from left leaning in my early 20's to right leaning in my later 20's was a time when I looked at a picture of a group of protesters from Chicago in 1968 and noticed the signs with a vietcong soldier holding a rifle above his head and the legend below reading "bring the war home." I thought , "wow, no wonder why they got their asses kicked."
ROTFLMAO!
My favorite for now is, "Call Obama at 202-456-1414, he has money for you…mine."
Do I ever get quizzical looks!
Now that WAS a DEPENDS moment. Check your shorts, dude. I think they need changing.
The best sign I saw at a TEA party rally… "I teabagged Janeane!". I bet that would sell a ton of t-shirts.
1.2 million protesters showed up in D.C. and no one got arrested! That has got to be a record. The MSM didn't have 'Something They Could Use, Dirty Laundry!" so they pleaded ignorance just like the administration via Fib Gibbs. I must admit ,they are right. About being ignorant……. I can't wait for the U-Tube festival of videos. It will only positively prove the MSM and Gibbs correct concerning their buttface liberal ignorance.
To paraphrase 'Zo Rachel: "It takes a LOT to get you guys to come out to protest!"
As someone who was living in Seattle during the WTO protests, I would much rather have 50,000 tea partiers marching through my city than 50 left-wing protesters of any stripe.
Manic… We really have to talk about your flair! (ducking)
If someone says "RACIST!" to me, my reply will be "and…?" (I'm racially aware inasmuch as there are places I do not go, etc, but not a racIST).
"…it does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds…"

"We who in engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive."
Martin Luther King Jr.
Every new baby is a blind desperate vote for survival: people who find themselves unable to register an effective political protest against extermination do so by a biological act.
Lewis Mumford
Srsly, not going to Camden is survival, not racism.
Well said Greg. I think it is wonderful how little Hannah and James have adapted and executed the SA game plan. The very same play book Obama is using. I think it caught them flat footed and they don't know how to counter their own strategy. Look up IRONY and this is what you find. Too bad Saul did not create the antidote to his own social poison, it will be the hemlock for the progressives.

"Grandma isn't shovel ready" was a great one.
(snifff)
Smells like 2 year old troll…with drooling…and in need of a change…
2012. Its coming, baby…
Hey are racists now worse than Hitler…… Zing
Buit it is fun!
so Greg I am doing something really crazy and staying up to watch Redeye and you stated that there were crazies on the left, crazies on the right and more crazies in the middle. Now I have a bone to pick wth you.
Those on the right cannot be called crazies.
Have you not heard the left and channeled the vibe of of your local SEIU meeting. All those right wingers are evil rich people and if there is one thing we know….
If you have money you are not crazy …. you are eccentric.
You can say that, but you are making an implicit admission that you are a racist.
Greg, I also noticed the lack of giant, paper mache effigies of Democratic leaders. The Left dominates us in that category.
Freedom of Speech. Freedom of Assembly.
Freedom of protest signs.
you guys were all right on the button. I was mocking you! was it the ultra-believable name that gave me away? because it didn't fool you, no sir. And you didn't disappoint: you got mad and you called me a poopy-pants.
I know who you are Anderson Cooper, and the reality is you have more people reading and commenting on you in here, then on your news. Is it still running?
This is actually demonstrable false, and hey, maybe it's the Ambien. But the media always focuses on signage, it's cheap and easy way to cover a political event, whether it be left or right. Are you telling me you never made fun of the nutty supersized puppets that showed up at the WTO protests? I did. And I knew about them because the media had a field day with the absurdity of it all.
Here's a challenging concept. Not every piece of information your brain perceives and processes relates to ideological prejudices designed to keep you down. I promise.
That's my favorite as well. You'll never see that one shown on the evening news.
1.2 million people did not show up. The only person reporting numbers even close to that is Glenn Beck. The DC fire department said 70,000.
You're a flowerpot.
"Finally, you media types who call these folks crackpots need to realize you’re only doing so because to them, you’re irrelevant. They no longer need you. Those protesters believe in the individual over the system, small over big government, private versus public. They don’t believe in you."
I love the irony. The media power brokers of today were sticking their middle-finger up to the older generation a generation ago and now it's their turn to be cast aside as irrelevant. There is a twist, when they were the youth they degenerated into self-serving spoiled brat narcissists…and they were so wrong in so many ways…and remain as such.

Nancy Pelosi is ugly enough by herself.
Can you imagine a 40 foot paper mache sculpture coming down the street – the Horror!
