Daily Gut: Barney Frank’s Heroic Stand Against Tyranny

The Congressman was speaking at a town committee meeting at Dartmouth, Massachusetts, when a crazy lady approached the microphone with a quivering rant – linking Obama’s health care plan to the Nazis. This was a lay-up for Frank, for the bug-eyed woman was a LaRouche follower, a member of a group of far-left conspiracy chuckleheads – who, like cockroaches, never go away despite the bug spray. These poor folks need medical help, not publicity, but Frank didn’t see it that way. It was his lucky day: he could speak truth to power, even if the power might have been a lonely shut-in.
Now, I am not saying this crackpot was a plant – I’ll leave that to Barbara Boxer. But the provocation was. You could practically see Barney winding up for the pitch, and he even acknowledged the Obama flyer she was carrying. See, he knew where this was going – it was a chance for him to shine with a well-rehearsed line. So while the media paints this as brave Barney standing up to white, racist Obama-haters who’ve hijacked the health care debate – to me he’s Lebron James slam-dunking Steven Hawking.
Worse, but not surprising, the wooly bully used this sad creature as a pawn to undermine potential for actual dialogue. He focused on the crazy, as if to say, “only those who question Obama are nuts.”
How, funny, just weeks earlier, you’d be called racist.
I guess this is called progress.

Our recovery rate from all major dieseases; cancer, stroke, heart diesease, etc is by far the highest with the second closest being France who are 14% behind us. England has one of the lowest recovery rates and all nations with a socialized healthcare structure (except Japan who are still behind but not quite as far) lag waaaay behind us in early detection of illnesses due to inaccessability of doctors and difficulty in getting regular checkups.

A word in her behalf: based on my book-jacket knowlege of this, eugenics (loosely, the "some lives are worth living", others aren't, part of what she said) was popular in America in the early 20th century until the uh, aggressive pursuit of that by the Nazi's discredited it. I think this, together w the Ezekiel Emmanuel oft-cited 2009 article in Lancet, in which he does indeed in effect write that some lives are worth more than others, may form the basis for her comment. A good book about this, which I have but haven't read, is "War Against the Weak: Eugenics and America's Campaign to Create a Master Race" (Basic Books, 2004). I think her point would have been harder to demagogue if she'd left the Nazi's out; Barney's good luck she didn't.
I went to school in Japan and I was strongly urged by teachers to make sure I had a full physical and dental check up before going there– they (my native Japanese teachers) told me that medical care in Japan wouldn't be even close to the quality to what I was used to. Fortunately, I didn't have to see first hand whether that was true or not.
Obama adopts policies that lead the us from recession into stagnation and blames Bush. He offers a health care system with "cost savings" based on the denial of care rather than address the real causes of rising costs like litigation induced defensive medicine and then denies that the denial of care to the elderly will have consequences. And then he relies on fools like Barney Frank to defend these policies. Only the complete absence of a thinking press makes this circus possible.

Ermmmm…it's been patiently explained again and again that the US has a very inclusive standard for recording" live births", while many other countries do not. Many infants born prematurely and/or with low birth weights, and who die soon after birth are not included as "live births in much of Europe, while in the US they are. Explain, if you like, how the single payers of Germany, France and the UK can have such a spread in their infant mortality rates. Does Frane have a health care system 150% orf the UK's , for example?

are you aware that other countries don't include infants in the count until they have lived 3-5 days? We count live births, even the child dies an our later. Other countries wait for what is called "thriving" in technical terms.
We have high infant mortality because we try to save every baby no matter how bad off it is. Other countries let them die before birth. Costs plenty, too. Our mortality rates are high. We are wealthy and all have cars which we kill ourselves in and we also have a high murder rate. It's not our healthcare system.

Sorry, but most countries count their "ive births" differently than the US which factors in any birth where the baby is born breathing even if it does just a few seconds, minutes, hours, or days later. Contrast that to some of those other countries where they may not count it as a live birth until the baby has been out of the womb for up to a year.

You know, I don't disagree with you on that last point for the most part. College would be cheaper if the public funding were not there and government did not write the loans to all students. There is no mechanism providing a an incentive for better service (ie education) for less to pull in consumers of said education.
The FDA is mostly there to make you feel better about things. Most companies who want to be good companies go above and beyond what the FDA requires to ensure good product and those that don't care know how to evade the long arm of the FDA long enough to give all the rest a bad name.
