Daily Gut: Thank You, Old People
by Greg GutfeldSo right now the public option part of Obama’s health care reform bill is in free fall, and many are blaming Republican opposition. Which, of course, is giving the Republicans way too much credit. Fact is, the people you have to thank for this surprising turn of events are old people.
Thank you, old people.

It reminds me of my Macbook. See, mine’s been having problems for the last six months and I keep planning to take it in, but I never do. Instead of walking a few blocks to the Apple Store on a sunny Saturday, I waste the day watching Top Chef marathons in my underwear.
Now, compare that to my mom. I got her a Macbook for her birthday last year – but somehow within a few weeks of owning it, she touched a button, causing everything on her desktop to disappear. Only old people can seem to find that hidden button.
Anyway, she hopped in her car and drove her 84 year-old butt to the store. Although it was just five miles away, it took her an hour to get to the place–-but the point is: she got there. And that illustrates a key lesson we’ve learned in this health care debate.
Old people may be slow, but they always show.
Pre-election, the media became so obsessed with the youth vote, that we overlooked the sheer determination of the elderly. And it left the pols caught like deer in a mobilized scooter’s headlights. How ironic is it that the folks most easily called to action are those with the poorest of hearing.
The fact is, young people talk a big game, but they often don’t show up to play. I can’t remember how many times I’ve signed up for a Sunday charity fun run, only to miss it because the night before I fell asleep in a hedge. But hey, it’s the thought that counts.
See, with the exception of those in the military, the young can’t prioritize for crap. Old folks, however, always show up for the things that matter: church, world wars, dinner (sometimes early). Meanwhile all those youngsters enamored by hope and change didn’t think beyond the bumper sticker – for it’s just too boring to question whether the government might turn your hospital into a post office with bed pans.
So, all in all – if it wasn’t for the elderly, the one thousand page-plus bill would have passed without anyone reading it. And that makes old people cool. They read it, so the rest of us didn’t have to. Thank them, and remember that one day you’re going to end up just like them – if you’re lucky.

Youth will show up if the right band plays for free. Thank God for the elderly for many of them have Wisdom and will show up to protect their grandchildren from todays popular band. For they know it is not free.
and they're always in front of me in traffic…

Greg, I couldn't agree more. But should we be worried when the Woodstock generation turns 70 and the old folks who won WWII and got us to the moon all pass away? I mean, you are right, they showed up and got the public option off the table, but younger generations are going to need to pick up the torch in the near future if we don't want the DMV running a health clinic.

Curious how the fight for "health care reform" turned into the fight for "health insurance reform". Seems they over-estimated their chances of pulling this one off….again. Next is the illegal immigration issue. Ready?
Greg! When's your mom coming on the show? I love her!
My mom is feisty as heck! Thank the Lord for their good advice and good example on what is bull-oney!
Post Office with bedpans, I tellein ya right now Greg, I'm stealin that one.
ObamaCare — The Post Office with Bed Pans
now THAT'S a great slogan. than you, gutmeister.
Hey, I'm young and not-too-bright, and I resent you not giving me free stuff. . . and stuff.
Good news for you is you will get some of what you paid in back. I am at the tail end of the Baby Boomers and I know I will get the red or blue pill nothing more. You and the rest of the Gray Panthers keep up the fight and get what you deserve.

No!
Take a good look at a little monster called "The Great Society" circa 1965..
All these freakin' old bastards are still responsible that. They owe us.
God bless the elderly for leading the way! Saw on Drudge where Tim Pawlenty said Obama's climate change is working–He's changing the climate from Democrat to Republican. LOL
This just sounded like one of those "Red Eye has been brought to you by…" segments. Thank you.
God bless the elderly for leading the way! Saw on Drudge where Tim Pawlenty said Obama's making progress on climate change–He's changing the climate from Democrat to Republican. LOL
How can Obama think that comparing his healthcare plan to the Post Office is a good move?
Your welcome, Greg. Just got back from hootin' and hollarin' at the political class down at the town hall. Then our mob (me and the missus) went back home to resume emailin' and callin' — boy, they had no idea what they were biting off when they took on a bunch of retired folks lookin' for some way to pass the time.
More fun than canning fruit, and these fruitcake socialists sure need to get canned next time around.
God bless you, and America — Land of the Free Forever!
If it weren't for those meddling geriatrics, I would have gotten away with it!!! – Obama
This segment of Red Eye was brought to you by grass. Grass keeps your yard from being mud and gives you something to do on the weekend. Thanks, grass!
Sanmon: Fortunately, I was able to set up some private funds for retirement, although my 401Ks went straight to hell just when I was getting ready to collect on them. But when I do finally apply for Social Security, some of it will still be there to supplement my reduced income. As we've discussed, health care reform is in order (just not anything even faintly resembling Obamacare). But I always figured that while insurance companies and the government worked on reforming health care those just entering the market, I would at least have Medicare when private insurance became too expensive. Of all people, I should have known better than to expect the government to protect the investment already made. There's no fool like an old fool. Conversely, you actually can teach an old dog new tricks, so it's time to put Obamacare in the dumper where it belongs, and bring on privately-funded, portable, and affordable health care for people of all ages with doctors, hospitals and patients making the decisions–not the lying government.
"No"? Is that like some kind of old person word or something?
Who needs bedpans at the post office? They already have all those slots to pee in.
Leave it to cap n tax and the hoveround will be a reasonable mode of transportation. Now I'm going to go outside and yell at the kids to get off my lawn.
No.
You can almost hear them at the Cracker Barrel meetings…………………"These damn kids have screwed up again. Well we'd better fix it before Matlock come on…………………Hey you damn liberals, get off my Constitution……..
"The Greatest Generation indeed. In Deeds, Words and Actions. God Bless You." Exactly!!!
You and Andre Price made me lol. You guys should take that act on the road.
Sorry, forgot the "w" in "Andrew".
bahiabob, Doesn't you generation ever get tired of saving us young punks from ourselves? It's got to be getting old by now?
But……………….Thanks for doing it…………….
Wow, a show of gratitude? Thank YOU, young Master Gutfield! We older folk are still relevant, dammit, and it's high time you youngsters realized it. Oh, and tell your mom she ROCKS!
I'm sort of in the early stages of geezerette-dom (just barely eligible for SS but working instead of taking the guv'mint nickel). A friend starting sending out an informal newsletter to like-minded friends, relations and other reasonable folks. I do a lot of the research, which involves visiting BH and a bunch of other websites and blogs and sending her the best bits, which she then passes on to those who want to be informed but don't necesarily have the time or skills to find stuff themselves. And I have a group of nice folks I've met while working at Da Liberry, with whom I share the occasional political nugget and/or cartoon. And now those folks are sending stuff back to us, and we're sharing, and it's sort of a real grass-roots thing, and it's growing, and ya know what?
IT WORKS! (And no one organized us – we organized ourselves. So there.)
No kidding! My mom is 85 years old, still giving 'em what for and I never cease to learn from her. If you ask me, there's not enough reverence for our old folks in our society anymore and that is a crying shame.
"He's changing the climate from Democrat to Republican"
In that respect, I'm cheering him on. Go Obama!
"I think the putz may need end-of-life counseling very soon."
Careful bahiabob, they are watching you!
Define that word for me. My generation and the ones after have never heard of this word! What is it used for? What does it mean? Is it slang for something?
You sir are a terrorist! A TERRORIST, I say!!
I think the Democrats forgot that not only do old people vote, but they have lots of free time to do things like write letters and go to town hall meetings. Most young Obamanauts are too busy getting their iPod waxed.

One of the best things the Government has done was allowing 401k investments. They just did not follow through with diversification education and allowing employes to be more diversified than what most companies allow. Still a good program.
Phil: Don't give it a second thought. Andre can't spell, beside not being able to take no for an answer.
Primer: It's the key word for making parents feel guilty. Some harried parent even wrote a book entitled "When I Say No, I Feel Guilty." It kind of goes with "insanity is hereditary–your kids give it to you."
This "No" word appears to be very useful……I'll have to remember it………
I thought it was rather brilliant myself. Of course its only truly brilliant if he was trying to scare the living hell out of me with that comparsion. If that wasnt the case than he might as well of said:"Hey, you know the post office right? Sure you do. Now heres why I bring this up: If you get sick we will ship you a doctor or a surgical staff if you need one. It will take three days – maybe as much as month – to get to you so.. honestly, you are totaly screwed."
Thanks to the old people, but the war is not over. We got a second to breathe, now get ready to fight some more. Old people can sit down for just a minute and then they have to get up and start shouting again.
i have been saying for months that once the younger generation shows itself to be as mad as we are, when they actually SHOW UP, that's when we've got this administration licked. not that we'd actually lick anyone, that's just weird.
Phil, They actually have a full blown Broadway Show…………….Follow the link…………………http://commentarama.blogspot.com/
they are kickin' a** and takin' names. go granny! go pop-pop!
Based on the way my mail has been showing up lately (torn up and wet?) I suspect your right…………..
beat me to it
How long do you think it will be before he sends the attack dogs after the geriatrics? Wait for it…………….
You'll have to wait for the re-runs to start on the "idiot box" before the younger generation will show up……and Eeeewww! I want no part of licking anything in Washington. We "do know" where they've been, and it ain't pretty……………..
You sound like an old fart with whom I would very much like to have dinner.
geriatrics, thats the CHANGE we can believe in… thanks to my parents and there friends for BASHING OBAMACARE out of the PARK…… thank god, there is a BIG uphill battle for him and his plans…. and thanks to the republicans GHHHHEEESH.. right…sarc.
Greg as usual I will be tuning in tonight to watch you BLAST the OLD FOLKS…LOL
There is of course one magic substance that when free will attract young and old alike….
Beer!
Primer and Pattiann: Thanks! You should also tell everyone that I'm Frick, he's Frack. LOL
Fortunately, for the rest of us, the political will of Generation Obama seems to end once the bumper sticker is applied.
Thank you, Grey Panthers!! You are the greatest generation for a reason!!
You used a word that is foreign to the White House and Congress. Smart……..
I am reduced to this inanity:
Mrs Gutfeld rocks.
Hard.
When I was 16, I went to protests to meet cool hip looking guys. Now that I'm 56, I go to protest the cool hip looking guy. Times have changed indeed.
Some of your finest work, Greg. And as always, spot on!
You don’t believe in the Tooth Fairy, or Santa Clause any longer and now you say we can’t trust what our government says. Sometimes you old guys can be a real bummer.
Old people are cool, they understand what’s at stake, and once again they are being called on to save America.

Old Coot
I think I love you! If you weren't married……Thank you and your missus for stepping up to the plate and hitting the ball out of the part. It is true .The Great Generation knows socialism, fascism, communism when they see it. The younger generation doesn't have clue. …..There are no "isms" in their vocabulary.
The Democrats are now finding out what conservatives have, unfortunately, known for a long time: Don't p!$s off people who have too much time on their hands.
A FACT: We have the GOP behind us, about a football field length back, to be exact, where they won't have to even get dirty. DISGUSTING BUNCH, by and large, except for the principled dozen or less of the GOP that do stand up when necessary.
Thank God for the geezers, geezerettes, codgers and ol' farts.
All elections are decided by the elderly vote because as you said they always show up to vote. If you want to lose touch the third rail and mess with their social security, medicare and send a bureaucrat out to their house to convince them to pack it in and head to the bone yard. Ever heard of the term Greedy Geezers. Don't let them hear you say it.
You are quite welcome, Greg. We olde gals (and guys) have to look out for you young whippersnappers. You can also thank us for spamming flagenfuehrer@vitehausen.guv until the bozo took the site down. Ever seen Monty Python's "Little Fishy?" Well, the White House has, about 163 times.
Don't screw with "old" people!
Say "hey" to your adorable Mom! Haven't seen a full show of Redeye in months. Someday you'll have to run the second half of all your shows for us geezers who fall asleep half way through.
Stop worrying about "the woodstock generation. Far more of us went to the Southeast Asian War Games than ever fell into that hippy horsecrap. We just didn't make the news, ever. Very few decent people do.
I, for one, still believe in Santa Clause. I do not, however, believe in the Santa Clause 2 or the Santa Clause 3.
I'll one up ya, I'll buy the old fart dinner.
Earybird Special for sure.
Sad to report that the so-called "Greatest Generation" that fought WW2 is mostly gone. I'm 66 and was born during WW2. Perhaps older people of whatever generation just have a bit more experience and wisdom.
Greg, you rock. I love your mom ! I MISS SEEING HER ON THE SHOW. BRING HER BACK "SOON "!!!
She is a sweetheart !
Loved your post, love your show.
YOU ARE A MESS ! In a good way of course !
GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS AND GIV E YORU MOM A BIG HUG FOR ME.
Forget the AARP discount, we take care of our own. You buy dinner, I'll pay for the American Senior Association membership. Deal?
Sequels stink.
T-Rav, I wasn't blowing you off earlier, I just can't get back into that thread. For whatever reason, I can't get the page to load.
Thank Primer, though I guess I should be disturbed that we're seen as a Broadway Show! LOL! I blame Lawhawk. . . he's soft on theater.
Thanks Primer, though I guess I should be disturbed that we're seen as a Broadway Show! LOL! I blame Lawhawk. . . he's soft on theater.
No problem, I have a spare.
No problem, I keep a spare.
Your disturbed? I'm more than a little distured that the first thing I thought of was "BROADWAY"…..What the hell?
I am convinced there was far more voter fraud than we ever thought. Obama is only following through on his promises. They voted for the promises. Why would they get so worked up now?
It seems The Greatest Generation has risen to the occasion yet again. They saved Us and the World from Totalitarianism 68 years ago and they're doing it again. The Greatest Generation indeed. In Deeds, Words and Actions. God Bless You.
I'm an old guy. Most of my generation showed up to vote for the patriot and not the putz. Now that the putz got elected, we show up to dispute the bull crap from the putz. See, us old farts don't give up and we don't have time or patience to stand for the putz and his daily shoveling of more bull crap. I think the putz may need end-of-life counseling very soon. The putz must have dementia if he thinks he can make it past us old guys with his socialistic bull crap.
Why am I not surprised? I knew social security was a ponzi scheme that I could never rely on to survive, but at least Medicare would have provided me with some kind of medical insurance, if not exactly what I wanted. So, I hit retirement age, my predictions about social security being inadequate were right, and Obama wants to steal from the fund I paid into for forty years to take care of the young, not-too-bright, and illegals who have paid nothing into health care (in other words, the Democratic base). Thank God my fellow gray panthers still know how to stir up a fight!
This article is 100% on point – and I am 31… I agree that a lot of my generation, and definitely the current late-teens and twenty-somethings are all talk, no walk. A perfect example is this pathetic program on HBO that I wasted some time watching – Russell Simmons' "Brave New Voices." It concludes with the mc saying "no one has to speak for this young generation – they can definitely speak for themselves…" which is sadly true…. They can speak, and nothing else.
Yeah, but the seniors are just cleaning up their own mess, they were so determined that many voted for Barry several times. Just check the ACORN-supplied registration info, they were so persistent even the dead ones voted for Barry.
The White House and Congress should be smart and use stimulus money to buy all retirees DVD copies of "Puppies From Around the World". That should distract them long enough to pass this mess.
They can speak all right…do you ever watch Leno's "Jay Walk"?
You want a real laugh, ask one of them to define the term "bicameral". Real politically aware, they are.
old people rock
Bicameral? Isn't that a camel with two humps?
The twenty-somethings of today are an enigma. For every CPL Benjamin Kopp, there seem to be three or four fluffy, entitled shitheads going to college on Mommy and Daddy's money or on grants and loans, majoring in beer and video games, and whining when they cannot find a six-figure job in marketing immediately upon graduation.
You hit the nail on the senior citizen head. My 76 year old mother decided she HAD to do more than scream at her TV. So, we started at the Tea Party in April, and that lit a fire under her. I got her a computer, and tutored her for days. She became an inferno. If she wasn't the first and last person *snitched* on @flag, I'd be shocked. Senate, House, City Council staff all know her by name. She really resonated with the young lady that said "You have awakened a sleeping giant". Did they ever.
I was going to add a comment, but I can not improve on yours! Thank you for being my voice and let me add my voice in the chorus to thank those of the Greatest Generation!!
Good article and true it was the old geezers stopped this train.
I guess young people were to self absorbed to realize Obama care was going to use the money from healthy young people to pay off old people's hip replacements at least for a while.
They have their money stolen by Social Security and now they were going tto have more of their money stolen for health care and to stupid to realize it.
Your most Welcome and Welcome aboard.
and they wanted to euthanize them
The elderly, especially those from the Greatest Generation, are like superstars. It angers me that the Obama administration views them as irrelevant, especially after everything they've done to make this country great. Go, grandma!
The reason Soc Sec Fund is broke is because Washington has raided it for the last 40 years and left IOU's, The sad thing about this is the Seniors and baby boomers have paid into this fund all these years and now they are going to take the money they put in and give free coverage to the illegals, so they will all vote for Obama in 2012. The morons and idiots who cannot do the math on the repercussions from all the abortions for the last 40 years is astounding. Anyone with half a brain should know when you kill this many generations, you are not going to have enough people to pay income tax. My belief is this has all been planned by the elitist who are clamoring for the "One-World Government". America has been taken over by the liberals and illegals. I wish someone would find them something to do besides doing their nasty blogging all day long. I recently read article Harry Kissinger wrote stating: "The EU Is Grooming Obama To Run The One-World Government". Can anyone connect this with why he is hell bent on nationalizing everything he can as fast as he can.
"Post Office with bedpans" – "Seinfield's" Newman as your health care professional. If THAT doesn't scare you, nothing will!
Don't forget "Evil-monger" – Senator Harry Reid
How many were at Woodstock and, simultaneously, how many were fighting for their country in Viet Nam? Perspective is always good.
SEIU and ACORN goons attacking geezers at the "town hall" meetings – yeah, I'd like to see Katie Couric and Brian Williams spin THAT on their "snooze-casts"…
Wow, great article! Greg, I love your Mom.
Really, I would like a DAILY program segment on RED EYE, with insights from your Mom.
I think "bicameral" is two videocameras (for 3-D viewing)…

The 'gray panthers' comment nearly made me choke on my drink. Thanks for the laugh!
The elderly vote and they pretty much vote every time without some pressing social issue. Young people not so much. There's a lot of "Dude I was going to go to the Obamacare thing but I almost got my highest score on (insert mindless video game here).
You're Welcome, Greg. How's your mom? I hope she's healthy!! She's my favorite Red Eye star!
The funniest thing of this whole health care debate (IMO) was when the president compared the competition that would come with a public option with the competition that one finds in the shipping business vs. the Post Office. He said something along the lines of "the Post Office is 7B in the red, so I don't think you have to worry about a public option blowing private insurance out of the water." He was essentially saying he expects the public option to be a crappy alternative. You could see the wheels spinning as he said it… OOPS!
Bed pans indeed!
I have medicare. It ought to be done away with; it's socialized medicine in the worst way. One does not earn it except by surviving. So, let's get rid of it. And then, let's see all the folks trying to decide about keeping moma alive or sending junior to college.
Greg, you're a funny dude. Keep it coming. Our side needs you.
AWESOME! I'm a middle aged guy and I couldn't agree with you more.
Goog going on this one but you still need to stay off the road during rush hour.
[...] Gutfeld adds, “Thank You, Old People.” Filed under: Liberal Fascism, Oh, That Liberal Media!, The Future and its Enemies, The Memory [...]
I was wondering about that myself.
rawl rite raggy!
Glad to see you caught it!
Glad to see you got it!
*grins* the classics are the classics.
Wonder what he looks like under that mask.
Old people know cool. They had Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, smokey jazz clubs and dinner theatres, made classic movies, and ushered in the "Golden Era" of TV. They are cool because they know cool and, to them, OBAMA ain't cool!
Thank you for being our warning system. I will tell my grandchildren about how the Greatest Generation fought until their last breath for all of us and showed us, AGAIN, that this country is worth fighting for!
Ain't that the truth!
