Daily Gut: Thank You, Fast Food Restaurants
by Greg GutfeldSo President Obama’s nominee for surgeon general has a dirty past – one so lurid it has many concerned experts wringing their hands in typical hand-wringing fashion.
What might this skeleton in Dr. Regina Benjamin’s closet be? Did she run a meth lab out of her camper? Were the children running the meth lab doing so without health insurance? Did she use the proceeds from this meth lab to fund the world’s largest puppy mill? And was the puppy mill actually a puppy buffet for a puppy-devouring white power group? No, no, no, and uh, no.

Nope, what she did was far worse: she worked part-time for Burger King, as a scientific adviser.
Predictably, nutritional experts claim that nominating a doctor who worked for Burger King is a horrible conflict of interest – that someone in charge of public health should not be in the business of selling evil fast food. It’s like hiring the shoe bomber to manage a Footlocker.
But I disagree. The fact is, from a public health perspective, fast food restaurants like Burger King and McDonalds have done far more to help people than harm them. The fat-bottom line: people in America and around the world aren’t dying from malnutrition because places like BK have made food fresh, cheap and simple to prepare. Seriously, wherever you find a fast food restaurant, you’ll find fat kids, but not starving ones. But in this easy age of value-free moralism, experts are more inclined to demonize Ronald McDonald than Robert Mugabe.
Granted, that clown makeup is kinda scary. Which is why I always ask him to remove it before we go to bed.

Being an Obama administration nominee, the fact that Dr. Regina Benjamin worked as an advisor to Burger King is probably her only good qualification, at least it was a real world job that had a practical application instead of the nonsensical academic think tank positions many of the others have held.
Seriously? You make him take it off?
How evil I must be, having worked for 6 months at Taco Bell as a teenager right before leaving for boot camp.
Whups!!! Someone's head will roll. She won't get past the MSM.
She will most likely be the only person in that administration that has ever held a real job.
If she's the one who advised BK to use those horrible "King" commercials, she ought to be tarred and feathered. On the other hand, working for a company that sells something other than sprouts and trail mix should give her some credibility.
Holy Crap Darkwolf, you are pure evil too Liberals! The military is one thing, but to work at a wicked fast food resturant is beyond the pale………..
and……………..can I have extra cheese on that burrito?………..Sorry couldn't resist…..
Burger King has never had a good ad campaign, but that one is particularly atrocious. I have actually avoided going to BK because I consciously said to myself that I don't want to support that ad.
She worked at a burger joint???!! Sounds like we need a special counsel to investigate her role. Think about the children! Why doesn't anybody think about the children?
Come on Lawhawk, what's not to like about a guy in a plastic head and cape peering into your front window? Nothing creepy there!
Primer: He ain't peering into my window. At least not more than once. After the first time, he'll be King Cyclops. LOL
Oh for sure. All my business cards read simply "the devil"
I miss those days though, when you could get a simple plain beef burito with xtra shredded cheese. Not on the menu anymore.
I don't understand the point of having that creepy King show up in the middle of the night in people's bedrooms. What does that have to do with selling hamburgers? Makes me want to go gun shopping.
Andrew: I'm amazed how long it took me to figure out who the King reminded me of with his plastic face and frozen smile. And then it hit me–it's Nancy Pelosi.
Sometimes the clown makeup is sexy!
But seriously libs hate fast food because they can do something libs and their gov programs can't, and that's feed people.
Would it surprise you that BK's full corporate name is "The Burger King Munitions Co."?
Seriously, I agree. Aweful ads, aweful imagery, aweful implications. They should have fired the ad company years ago.
I thought she was a problem because she was too fat. I like em chuby so I have no problem there.
The real question for me is: Did she pay her taxes?
This woman had a job [part time] and most likely paid taxes. This would make her unquailified to be a gangster for Obama.
That's the problem with that Obama=Joker poster, the person who best fits the Joker mold is Pelosi. I see Reid as the Penguin, Frank as someone like King Tut, and Obama is kind of one of those no-named worthless guys that Batman slaps around before turning to the real criminals.
catch that rolling head. I need something to chop up for the Chalupas.
I half expected to see socialism printed below the picture. Seriously, Barry could just as easily be Ronald as Joker.
"Aweful" spelling, too. : )
as much as I hate the "King" campaign, I have to admit that the "Kingons" concept was amusing.
Conversly I love Jack-in-the Box's commercials…
makes sense, she is quite the meathead.
Sure she wasn't just one o' dem bitties in the BK lounge?
they did think about the children. That's what White Castle is for. Those little burgers are all kid sized.
hence the latest script I'm working on, a good honest tough guy tale entitled "Uzi the Clown".
Sorry, I went to public skools.
Nma, imae nonna *fries* minsthg *only .89 cents*, nphdwph ljbdb coupon, p xiyxv ovbxovx oxnihdhh, please drive up!
What are you implying? Does White Castle get their meat from the soylent company?
There has always been something seriously wrong with BK's ad people. Their spokesman at one time in the late 80s was "Herb" a high-water pants-wearing, black tape on the glasses geek. Yeah, everybody wanted to be just like him. And for awhile there was the loudmouth creep from MTV shouting "I LOVE this place!" Fortunately, I always lived much closer to a McDonald's or an In 'N Out Burger. The Whopper is a pretty darned good burger, but I wouldn't go there because some plastic-faced voyeur in a crown who likes big butts sent me.

I dived for it, but it slipped past me. It is at the bottom of the hill. I aint goin' down there. There might be SEIU.
I remember those Herb commercials. They were idiotic. I'd rather have White Castle burgers, myself. Sadly, I can't get them where I live.
I'll go after it, I can use SEIU for baloney.
Mmmm. White Castle burgers. Soylent green has nothing to do with it (I hope).
try huked on fonix. it werkt for me.
one of the few things I miss after I left California.. In N Out Burger!
not yet, but once BObama comes into affect, they will.
not yet, but once BObama-Care comes into affect, they will.
feel the same way, even if I have to drive an hour to get to the nearest one.
Could. Not. Disagree. More.
This is definitely one case where I'm failing at being any form of libertarian. No. People should not be able to go make themselves OBESE and expect EITHER government or privately funded health care to pick up the tab.
The situation is screwed up all the way and cannot stand. Either people like that can go have some special high cost health care that either they or MacDonalds and BK get to fund or these places need to be shut down as a threat to public health. Currently, this is bullsh*t!
And YES this woman should be fired for having worked at BK. WTF?!?!
Not to pimp our blog, but check out the image at the end of this article:

It fits right in with this discussion.
Greg, damn it man you’re right, this woman is highly qualified, think of the brilliance of “Special orders don’t upset us.” What the hell does the Surgeon General do anyway remind people to wash their hands, and wear a condom.
I don't know if you remember when McDonalds was accused of using worm meat in their burgers? They squelched the rumors by putting out ads saying that worm meat it too expensive to use.
Could you imagine White Castle doing the same thing: "Human is too expensive, so we stick with beef."
I just thought you had coined a new word, somewhere between awful and awesome
Andrew: I just thought you had coined a new word, somewhere between awful and awesome
Obama is Scarface… Soros is the Ventriloquist.
Another Carolyn: I had a friend in Southern California who would regularly have White Castle burgers flown in.
LOL! Good call! I thought Obama might be Scarecrow — being a stuffed suit and all, but Scarface works too.
Not this time, my Spidey-spell-check-senses just failed me.
I'm right there with you. Plain with extra cheese was the perfect "drunk" food was it not? Great! Now I want a Burrito……….
Darkwolf: I miss the old bumper stickers from In 'N Out. They rearranged the words because the teens were altering the sticker by removing the "r" in Burger, thereby changing the entire meaning. Obscene, but funny.
Would he mind if the plane made a stop first in Arizona?
I always thought of Frank as more of the "Catwomen" type….
JamesB: They're clever, their funny, and their "head" isn't creepy. I liked the idea of waiting to see if Jack was going to recover after his accident. Very smart marketing to have people look forward to a commercial to see how the story comes out.

I like Monkey Phonics better……..
I remember one surgeon general who seemed awfully obsessed with masturbation.
Another Carolyn: Sadly, a lost opportunity. It was a she, and I lost track of her and her husband after their divorce. Oddly, I think she moved to Arizona, near Flagstaff if I remember correctly.
As long as the burgers aren't made from sea kittens.
Mmmmm, sea kittens. Yum!
Ouch my brain!!!
Objections to this column? "Where's the beef?"
Hey, past the science part it's pretty obvious that McDonalds has done more fo the international diplomacy scene than anyone. A country with a McDonalds is a country you wouldn't have any qualms about visiting. It is a country that is moving forward, providing it's burgeoning middle class with choices and enticing the kids to an oasis of the most desired cultural icons on the globe: American stuff !!
Fred Turner should be recognized as an Ambassador nonpareil for planting arches around the globe.
Talk about cultural equivalence ! India serves up a completely different menu than Thailand or Japan or Estonia, or Peru. Who else can say that ? Ever been an international incident over McDonalds (ok France doesn't count due to the snails) ?
and no "peeping King Tom" activity to report…
Hey Cog, she shill for the Obama Admin and BAT cleanup for the W.H. softball team…that's a dual threat if I've ever seen one.
I believe you could disagree more. Have some faith in yourself.
As to your argument, it is no more flawed than usual. I'm currently enjoying a nice Tombstone freezer pizza with greasy sausage and pepperoni. My wife is not home so I'll polish off the whole thing and quaff three or four of my favorite high calorie beverages to wash it down.
See how that works? I haven't left the house but I've ingested more bad calories than if I drove down to BK and stopped at McDonald's on the way home.
Should the government shut down the Tombstone company? As always, your logic sucks.
That was my favorite one. She inspired me to volunteer for community service work in our public high schools.
Too bad Darkwolf, whether you serve oversees or over a counter, the Democrats don't want you.
What?……Community Organizer is not a "real" job? I list it on all my resumes, don't you?
Good idea taking off the makeup, but better keep the clown shoes on until restraints are properly tied. Some don't cotton to false advertising.
Cog, really? This is the only thing sans libertarian philosophy you claim? You have not one thread of libertarian in you.
Aim a little higher and it could be King Tryclops!
He'd probably have to go to Wikipedia to get a definition of what 'libertarianism' is.
Its really irritating how people bandie this word "logic" around here where all they are really applying is "oversimplification".
I believe that people should be able to go out there and buy whatever fat food they want and make themselves into human dump trucks. That's their freedom and I support it. Is that libertarian enough for you?
HOWEVER, what really cheeses me off is that this occurs all over the place, and now either as a tax payer, OR, as a working guy who's company offers exactly two options on his health care benefits (three if you count "nothing" as an option)… one way or another – the fruits of MY labor are going to pay for the diabetes treatment of such people. My healthcare costs, and yours, are increased to aborb the costs of this obesity epidemic we have here!
SO then, are you going to try to tell me that its "illogical" for me to be bothered by that?!

Ms. Elders I believe, the Srugeon General, …sage, kinda like a wise Latina!
Is it just me or is Ronald McDonald's white-face makeup racist?
Ken, thanks for supplying the answer I expected and (actually) respect. I don't pretend to know all of the answers but I do like to argue what I think are important positions, and I appreciate an informative counter argument.
alas, no, of course I'm not an extreme libertarian to advocate a free market health care approach. (shock).
Bill Cosby did an hilarious skit many years ago about a stoner going into a Burger King and stating to the cashier, "I wanna see the King!".
He used the different voices that he was so good at in the day. Had the bombed out stoners' voice down pat.
I wish I still had the tape.
So I'm the only person who likes the Burger King?
*MissQuinn*
The logical inconsistency is that it's somehow McDonald's fault for selling high calorie food, but not the fault of Tombstone pizza.
did I say that? no. I consider them the same.
at least it's ronald in your bed and not the creepy king character from burger king…
LoL . Not the slant I was shooting for Jamesb… but I like it. Thumbs up.
Perfect OT!
Me likey *sea kittens*….and baby seal…on a steek.
It's always cool to pimp the blog yo!
To think Obama wants to tax most poeple going the McD's even more?
But you don't understand! She worked for an eeeeviiile capitalist corporation – an evil capitalist corporation that made money selling food to millions of satisfied customers! The Obama administration can't have former money-grubbing capitalists working for them. They want people who worked in noble callings like "community organizer", "political hatchetman" (oops – i mean hatchetperson), or "union goon" (oops – I mean "enforcer" – no, wait – "activist").
…Hey – could have been worse; she could have worked for White Castle (home of the "slider")!
This is good. Special orders won't upset her.
I'm reassured to know the food czar is on the case.
I'm reassured to know that the food czar is on the case.
I sense a new poster coming out.
Seriously, can someone do a mash-up of Obama as Ronald MacDonald as The Joker?
I can't believe it hasn't been done yet.
It's Outrageous. She worked for Burger King. Does her perfidy know no bounds!… Excuse me… Hey Pal make that a Double Whopper with Cheese and a side of Fries and a Vanilla Shake to go………………WHAT?!
