Daily Gut: Townhalls vs. Twitter
by Greg GutfeldSo what happens when you produce something so huge that it’s virtually unreadable? Normally it’s left unread. I call it the Harlot’s Ghost maxim.
But what do you get when this strategy of over-delivering backfires? Pure comedy unmatched even by a “Golden Girls” marathon.
More specifically, you get pols who never read the health care bill faced with people who have. Witness the town hall meeting this morning with Senator Arlen Specter. The folks present didn’t just read the bill, they’re now quoting it – something even the Titan of Transparency never really wanted.
Even better, this level of discourse is coming from the non-Twitter crowd, the beyond Facebook folks more concerned with Lipitor side effects than Lady Gaga’s lady parts. They are not motivated by racism, as the left wants everyone to believe, but by real concerns – some raised at the dinner table, some reasoned in books. None from Twitter, I imagine.
I only bring up Twitter, because as I watched the PA town meeting, I also came across an online column by Meghan McCain, i.e. Ron Reagan with curves. In a catty struggle for relevance among perceived rivals, she points out that while Michelle Malkin has the number one book on the New York Times bestseller list, McCain has “nearly twice as many Twitter followers as she does. And trust me, Twitter is more of an indication of where young people are than books published by the hyper-conservative publisher Regnery.”
Maybe so, but did these “young people” read the health care proposal? Did they show up at town hall meetings? No – they’re too busy Twittering about “Twilight” (yes, a dated reference, but I like how it sounds). Twitter might have been there for Iran, but in the end, the young people weren’t.
And here is where McCain’s crowing about Twitter reveals a mistake many people make: confusing mass for meaning, accumulation for content. The fact is, the phone book has everything I need to know about the world around me, but I don’t take it to the beach to read. The phone book inspires no one, for it is (or was) a tool used by others to facilitate communication – much like Twitter. To confuse the messaging system with the message should tell Meghan her message needs work. Considering she just signed a hefty book deal, I’d get on that soon.
Which brings me back to those old coots railing at Arlen Specter this morning. That was an honest spectacle generated by a generation unencumbered by the desire for “followers.” Their concerns are bigger: increased government control, their family’s well-being, and of course, their own mortality. They realize that 5000 followers will not come to their funeral. And sadly for Megs, they probably don’t buy books either.

Most Twitter comments are on the level of "Hi, I just took a big dump. Have a nice day." And now we're expected to follow Ashton Kutcher? Yeek! Meanwhile, I've been forced almost my entire life to pay into Medicare. I just reached the age of Medicare eligibility. So–it's time to take it away from me. So for what's left of my life, I'll be paying for somebody else's health care. It works out to: I just spent forty years paying for old people's coverage. Now that I've reached that age, I get to pay for young people's coverage. Did I miss something in-between? Even Obama can't be that crazy. Or can he?
The "Adventures of Ashton and Mom" are more than I care to put myself through. In comparison, broken glass and tobasco sauce are sounding like a great alternative.
I loved The Gut entry today. Before the Twitter-bash starts, remember, this is a value-neutral form of communication. Kutcher and CNN fought it out to see who could get a million followers first and Miss McCain seems to think her following has to do with what's between her ears as opposed to what's under her sweater (huh, tattooed plus-size girl who likes to have the intercourse, color me astonished). However, Palin effectively fought smears against her using the medium, and most importantly, Iranians fighting for their lives used it to get the word out.
Not to all BH bloggers: if you want a lot of comment love, mention Miss McCain in a negative light or Mrs. Palin in a positive one – pretty simple, really.
The young ones are too busy Twittering to realize that once this bill is passed, once they begin making $30K/year will be *required* to spend 7-10% of their income on health insurance, whether they want or need it or not. Better yet – it always gets better with this crowd – if they don't go along with this, they'll face a hefty fine from The Taxman come April 15. Anyone who think the twentysomethings in Girls Gone Wild are crazy should take note when these most adoring of Obama fans realize how much their love has cost them.
Totally agree with Mr. Gutfeld, Twitter is a tool to be used not worshiped.

What is interesting about twitter, ask some man/child or woman/child what s)he is doing and you get no answer or a "get off my back". Well all you have to do now is log onto their twitter account and you can find out what they are actually doing.
I guess if we mention that the 'oh-so-special' twitter account and phone will go away because of the cost of healthcare increasing, the mature-challenged among them will realize that Obamacare will strike in a most personal way. It is something to think about.
BTW, I don't want to use twitter. Already people can get a hold of me by cellphone. Why should I tell them what I am doing minute to minute. I want some privacy.

Meghan McCain sickens me. She and Ron Reagan have what I now call Janeane Garofalo syndrome: juvenile rejection of everything their parents stand for. Which is particularly hilarious in McCain's case because her dad isn't even a real Conservative.
They're all just very sad, needy people. They want acceptance and haven't learned yet that standing apart from the crowd by having values and intelligent beliefs is an honorable thing.

And I don't mean in the traditional sense of "what are you doing" There is no faster way to spread info than twitter and as a call to action alert. Use the hashtags #tcot #teaparty or #iamthemob and it is the over thirty crowd that is using it for politics, really. Once you learn to use twitter then try twitterfall.com You may thank me later.
Many polls taken haven show that the number 1 goal people of her generation want is to be Famous. I guess they think Twitter tweets will do it for the birdies. I guess that is why the Porn Industry has no problem getting "talent".

Goodness, the grapes are sour. And stupid. Meghan brags that something that's free is 'worth' more than something that costs money is beyond dumb. To reach into your pocket to pay out hard bucks (especially in a recession) to buy a book is a REAL gauge of worth. It takes nothing to twitter a twit like Meghan – which is precisely the value of her opinion and non-popularity.
This twit thinks her twitters are worth more than Malkin's books? Sheesh, this sounds like a grumpy high school senior saying that having more people wave at her is worth more than the other girl being voted Prom Queen. Duhhhh!

after forst mocking twitter I decided to try it…I think its fairly lame..BUT the upside to it is you can have the "tweets" ( I hate that term as much as liberals) send to your mobile device…So you can follow all the news sites and people like Andy Breitbart and have it all send to your phone and have all the breaking news. Andy Levy is a good source of news too..as Andrew said dont follow MookieWilson86 if you have any sense of decency..as a news vehicle, its worth its cost !
Have to agree with the above. I didn't think much of Twitter in the beginning, but I like it for its ability to spread news quickly. As for MeAgain McCain, she is interesting to follow on Twitter. Most ppl follow her for the same reason I do. It is like that trainwreck you just can't help but watch. Rarely have I seen a more immature, self-involved person. I hear ppl say, well, she's young so that's why she's so immature. Yeah, right. My 21 yr old daughter just bought her first house by herself. Across the country from mom. She and her hubby are raising their 2 children there, while my daughter attends college plus works. This is what young ppl always used to do before it became acceptable for ppl to not grow up until they were 30. Now we have a bunch of layabouts who live and leach off their parents with their pot guts and receeding hairlines. Give me a break!!!!!!
That ain't the half of it "Law". Now that you've reached 65, and won't be "paying into" the fund, ergo a serf that can't work anymore, you are disposable. And THAT is what this health care debacle is all about. Separate the emotionalism from the intellect and it is extremely logical:
1. Social Security is going bankrupt yet is the third rail of politics. Politicians can't touch it. So how to address it? Well, who collects social security? That's right. The old folks. Hummmmm. Universal coverage ALWAYS leads to queues AND rationing either by queue or by intent. (In a queue, the really sick ones will die before their turn; by intent means over a certain age, certain "services" aren't offered — ICU to those over 65 perhaps,
no hip replacements to anyone over 70, no transplants over age 55…. (Naturally, these restrictions won't affect the "betters". The Queen Mum got a hip replacement at age 90+ in England). So by restricting treatment, the secondary benefit is these fossils die off which means a savings in Social Security.
2. Now suppose the sick old geezer makes it through the queue anyway? Humm. Tough old bird! Well, the majority of one's health cost is spent in the last six months of a patient's life. So how does a physician KNOW when the patient is in the last six months? Well, age is one indicator. Patient is 95 and very sick. Most likely this is the last six months. But docs have a hard time letting patients die. That pesky Hippocratic oath, you know. Bureaucrats take no such oath and a computer can make those kinds of decisions without conscience. Cost savings number two. Plug in age, diagnosis, a few vital signs, and voila – the computer and its bureaucrat know. End of problem. No more spending exorbitant amounts of money on someone who's going to die anyway.
3. Bush's moratorium on exorbitant death taxes expires in 2011. Without lifting a finger, the Federal and State Governments once again become the largest beneficiary of estates not large enough to be protected by a Foundation. (Ever wonder why every superrich family (Kennedy, Clinton, Gates) ALL have "Foundations"?)
So with this one "change" in America's health situation, the Federal Government gets rid of paying social security, doesn't have to pay exorbitant medical costs for someone on the way out anyway and the cherry on the sundae? They get to COLLECT the estate tax! Life is good (for them).
Unfortunately, the "gray hairs" figured it out.
Ashton Kutchner should be verrrry interested in senior care. Demi Moore will be needing it in the not too distant future.

I have a Twitter account and I haven't been to it for about three months. It was totally boring. I use FaceBook more often but it doesn't impress me that much. Both sites seem to be set up for people to get as many "friends" as they can…as said above, volume seems to mean more than content.
Gotta love the estate tax!!!!!! But I do believe the bill has found a way to work around that.

So essentially, they will take your belongings legally with a "mandatory" living will of which they will have power of attorney. If the estate tax is back in place (& I believe it will be), it will not seem as they are stealing that much money. While they will be taking everything.
Meghan McCain just strikes me as the type that wants to be featured in Playboy as the Political component of Hugh Hefners empire. You know…Daddy issues and all that.
As for Twitter – have said it before – it WORKS for those who want to spread information quickly – AND its a Fabulous tool for promoting your business/website/[insert product] – and folks, it TAKES WORK to make it work for you. You have to get on there and SOCIALIZE…its why its called Social Media – you cant expect to get on there and have everyone notice you all at once. It doesnt work that way. Its taken me about three months to get to where I can have a daily conversation with someone…and there have evolved various ways for people to amuse themselves on Twitter – there is one game called Temporal Tuesday – using hashtags, you can write about "going back in time" and discussing a period of history that interests you, but you go as a Time Traveler. Want to talk about the real formation of the NAZIs and what that stands for? Go back in time on Temporal Tuesday and tweet it to your friends.
Theres also a number of roleplaying games going on in Twitter…so it isnt just about tweeting some innocuous statement and being bored because someone didnt respond. Twitter takes works and thought and creativity to work for you. It is what you make of it.
Having said that – I wont follow McCrazy's daughter. She's a despicable snotty little tool who WILL get b*$@! slapped one day by the Real World. Hope Im around to watch.
I had to really laugh at the gall of congess to whine about having to read the (any) bill. It did not take me that long and I did not need two lawyers to do it. The majority of the time spent reading the bill is on cross referencing with tax codes, et tal…. Why exactly do these people collect a(n) (exorbitant) paycheck!?!?!
