Not sure if this is the right place (I'm not really good with computers), but left you a trackback for your readers, if they ever need some information about horse tack....

I remeber that scene too, and I am reminded of it from time to time. Larry Hama (the writer of the comic) had some profound bits of wisdom buried in that series.

In the movie, GI Joe is an NATO military initiative founded by THE UNITED STATES. They changed the nationalities of TWO MINOR CHARACTERS in the Joe team, and yet so many people threw a bitchfest over it. Duke, Snake Eyes, Scarlett, General Hawk, and Ripcord are all still Americans (General Hawk being particularly significant since he is the leader of GI Joe), but unfortunately a lot of people complaining about this movie probably don't know that, because they probably don't even know that GI Joe is the name of a unit and not a singular character (which says something about how much they REALLY care about the quality of the film, and how much they are merely exploiting it for a talking point).

Personally, I loved the movie. I saw it in theaters twice, and bought it on Blu-Ray. I thought it was very refreshing specificaly that the movie PORTRAYS SOLDIERS IN A POSITIVE WAY. The soldiers in the movie, especially the Americans are portrayed as being brave and loyal, and the only thing that has changed is that now there are members from other NATO countries in the unit, in addition to the US. The people who complain about GI Joe not being American enough are just looking for something to complain about, and they decided to pick on a fun summer movie based on a goofy cartoon show just because they are so infuriated at the notion that Americans sometimes accept help from other countries when we save the world.

I was alluding to the hypocritical nature of a great deal of people that are outraged over Hollywood's depiction of the military but are just as uninformed (on this blog are two pretty big violators, John Nolte and Alexander Marlow). Both cursed the Hurt Locker for how it portrayed soldiers, but their gripes only come what they THINK soldiers are like. Their cozy West Hollywood digs are a far cry from anything you and I experienced (loosely based on your deployment, that is- you could've been an REMF pogue for all I know, and they live better deployed than I did on Ft. Lewis). And not only that, the people who frequent this website aren't much better. Comments are a good indicator of how received an article is. Skim this blog for Michael Yon's dispatches from Afghanistan and look at the number of comments. They'd rather grumble about Obamacare and GI Joe than talk about the implications of Afghanistan. While American soldiers are dying at an ever increasing rate, I see their plight in a war I support ignored on this rag. Support the troops, indeed.

Hollywood doesn't get a pass from me. You were right in your comment that they show my generation as a bunch of sulking malcontents. I'll never forgive them for that. But the people who say this the loudest are usually woefully unqualified for those remarks (see: Nolte and Marlow). It's getting tiresome to see those kind of low grade dolts speak on my behalf.

As for the guys I served with - never had I earned the privilege to associate with a better group of men. No one could really relate to a 'cause' - that stuff was for the birds. I didn't see any purple fingers on my tour, just arms and legs and heads - baked red and black in the furnaces of VBIEDs and house-BIEDs (my AO had more wired houses than Fallujah in '04). The locals dancing around the blast crater where my friend was killed was an indication of how the cause was received. Please excuse me if I find it difficult to justify a war most Americans (left and right) used as a partisan club to beat the other side without giving pause to the people who were there, why we were fighting, and what the strategic goals were.

[...] I wrote about this two years ago, just when Hasbro and Paramount execs decided to give GI Joe a makeover. Back then they felt the world would be too pissed at us for getting rid of Saddam Hussein to go see a movie about an American hero. As it turns out, they were wrong – the backlash over Saddam’s death had less impact than Norman Fell’s. [...]

So long as they all admit that there are no good guys or bad guys in this conflict, just misunderstandings. And steer away from mentioning any of that ugly Final Solution business.

Oh, and find a way to work in a dig at President Bush or Sarah Palin, and you're good to go.
