Daily Gut: Letterman Should Apologize for Being Lazy
by Greg GutfeldSo David Letterman apologized one more time, and boy was it painful.
Now, I know that for some folks, this is a big win. Not for me. Letterman getting cornered over a crass joke means little to me – if only a few segments later, he welcomes a jackass Ph.D. who considers you a “loser” if you do nothing about climate change. So while it might be fun to get Letterman to grovel over a joke, a guest who spews global warming dogma to hearty applause will always piss me off more than slimy slander. Because the latter is taken as a joke; the former isn’t.
More important, I didn’t want Letterman to apologize – I just wanted him to say how he screwed up. Letterman repeatedly chose Sarah Palin to make fun of, because no one in his protective, elitist bubble ever assumed she would be a risk. So there were never any limits when it came to her, Bush, or anyone else Letterman considered a right wing dork. And that was Dave’s screw-up. He went too far because – in his lazy, predictable world – he thought there was no such thing.
It would be great for him to admit that. He should say: “I’m not sorry about offending you, I’m just depressed that every night I’m producing worthless wads of no-risk, predictable pap. I made fun of Palin because IT WAS EASY, and that makes me a hack.”
I know that’ll never happen, but it’s fun to pretend.
TONIGHT: we’ve got Jim Norton, Jonathan Hoenig and Noelle Hancock. Plus other good stuff that’s really good!

I am still at a loss as to explain Dave's constant bashing of anyone to the right of centre, especially his worn-out attacks against President Bush, etc. What, there's no material with Obama to make fun of ? Maybe the new pay Csar will also limit pay to everyone to a max of $500,000 – How do you think Oprah would feel ? Spielberg Hanks ? Gutfeld ?
As for attacking Sarah Palin and family, completely classless. I haven't watched him in over 4 years all because of his steady shift to constantly attacking all conservative values. This really bugged me as I applauded him for his long-time investment in racing which is a passion of mine, but he's lost me for good.
It's too bad as when he's not conservative bashing he was quite talented and enjoyable to watch.
Six months into the Obama admin. and still no jokes. Palin lost, Bush and Cheney are out of office and yet he and his writers still kick them around. The Left can't let go.
Greg hit it on the head, he's lazy (and a little cowardly, but mostly lazy).
In the case of Bush and Cheney, there are two things at work. One is laziness (they've been on auto pilot the last few years with the BDS jokes), the other is that they can see that their emperor has no clothes so they bash Bush and Cheney as a distraction.
In the case of Palin, she didn't lose, McLame lost and they know this (although they'll lie to your face and tell you Palin cost McCain the presidency when the reality is her presence is the only reason it wasn't a slam dunk for The One).
Palin (and other true conservatives) are an existential threat to the Democrats. She MUST be destroyed before 2010 or other conservatives might start "getting ideas" and "acting all uppity" and worse, start getting votes. If they haven't killed her off by 2012 then she's one of the best chances the GOP has for making President Barry a one termer.
In a logical world, I would have thought what he said was awful and that culture keeps spiraling down just when I thought it couldn't get worse – but it's just a joke, free speech, whatever…there's more important things. I want to thank whomever put the link to HillBuzz.org in the comments of a previous post. That site has opened my eyes. Conservatives DO give up to easy and take the high road – not realizing the importance of such battles. It was right and classy for Palin to accept the apology – even if it was a non- apology. She's getting the game right. Hit hard, re-frame – but she can only hope the grassroots will keep the pressure on. It's places like here where we need to take the stand! Even if it's not for conservatives (and I can't stand feminist views – so it's not that) it's for cleaning up culture (not censoring – just that we aren't going to take it anymore and we'll stop buying your stuff until you cut it out). Thank you, HillBuzz.org for opening my eyes and getting me more excited about supporting Palin than any of the conservative sites have. Don't think Rove doesn't play like this. We can learn from the Dems and do it with class like Palin has – but we have to work at it!
If they make jokes about the Annointed One, they will have to admit that what he is doing is worthy of laughter.
Laughing at a politician and his policies, is admitting derision and contempt for what he does, or is doing.
Since these people were so blatant in their support of Obama – going so far as to literally call him GOD – they cannot deride him. Should they do so, logic dictates they would – by definition – be ridiculing themselves.
That will never happen. They're too arrogant.
I mean… c'mon – - look at what they do for a living.
Since Letterman moved to CBS he's pretty much sucked.
He should apologize to Viacom for that.
Letterman + Liberal = Lazy!
Letterman lazy? His writers not knowing the difference between 14 year old Willow and 19 year old Bristol?
The hell you say, man…
On second thought we'll go with lazy…
I am willing to forgive. Indeed, I have no problem forgiving this fetid excuse for human flotsam masquerading as a late show host. I do have a problem forgetting the many insults he has leveled at conservative women, as well as his audience’s reaction to his rancid attempts at humor.
I shall forgive, for I am a bigger person than he, in intellect, heart, soul, and wit. But I shall not forget, for to do so would be to dishonor those he has slighted.
So, in short, he is forgiven, and I can tell him to take a flying sex act at a rolling doughnut, but in my magnificience I shall warn him to take care that his scrotal sacks do not scrape the asphalt.
Frankly, it may be Viacom/CBS (weren't they the ones who fired Imus on the radio?) that led to Letterman sucking…
Palin's the ONLY thing that kept McCain IN the race. He was riding that bomb to the ground until he chose her. She took him from a couple thousand (maybe) people at rally's to tens of thousands. Anyone who says different is purposely either lying or trying to minimize her worth to the ticket. She isn't done and she'll be targeted as long as she's alive by the left.
Interesting point.
We always hear these late night comics claim "we're just funnin'" or "we give everyone a hard time equally" when they get called on their liberal bias … truth is they themselves don't see their jokes as harmless poking of fun, they see it as their job to tear down their enemies.
The reality is Conan and Leno are just as bad, they just weren't as coarse about it.
"No one in his protective, elitist, bubble ever assumed she would be a risk"
Mmmm. You nailed it Gregory.
Elitism is rampant in too many corners.
Letterman is typical of liberals in that he is incapable of saying "I was wrong."
The Boys Throw Rocks at the Frogs in Jest but the Frogs do not Die in Jest…They Die in Earnest.
Way to go conservatives, Embassy Suites/Hilton Hotels have withdrawn their adds from CBS. Hit’em in the pocket, oh yeah!
Oh indeed, if it weren’t for Palin, McCain would have lost by 20%, no question.
Greg – I totally agree with you and am glad to see someone write about this aspect of it. Letterman certainly did go too far and it's time for conservatives to let it be known we are tired of it. "Pride goeth before the fall" and Letterman is full of himself.
I don't know….he jumped the shark way before that, right around the time he donned the Velcro suit and jumped on the trampoline onto the Velcro wall. He then proceeded to seal his fate by covering his suit in nacho chips and being dipped in some dip.
Which when you think about it was poetic, in a way.
Heather, thank you so much for letting me know about HilBuzz.org. I just linked on it – and damn, is it good! Thanks again.
And I would quibble with you only over one minor thing – instead of saying 'conservatives DO give up too easy and take the high road', I would say it was 'Republicans' who do that instead. That's a distinction I make. The Republicans are the politicians – the conservatives are the believers. And I don't believe we conservatives give up at all. The fact that we're here on this site protesting, the fact that we're popping up blogs all over the net, that we're creating 'tea parties' is proof we don't give up. But our party? Oh, brother.
Awesome! That will get their attention. Looks like I may be staying at Embassy next time, when I'm on business.
I once waited in line for 4 hours during a cold Chicago winter just to see his show. Now, I can't stomach the bitterness, snideness and yes, laziness. He's now too rich to care. He needs to exit like Carson (although he certainly won't go out with the class) and disappear. It's over Dave.
Don't forget to multiply by Linguistically Lame
The guy wore gym shoes with his suits until he was forty-five. When the hell is he gonna' apoligize for that?
Years before this, I was disgusted with Letterman. His meanness, his cruelty, his nasty enjoyment of waiting for the right moment to shove his 'rapier wit' into his guest's backs just repulsed me. There were guests who wouldn't come back to his show because he was so cruel – Cindy Crawford was one of them. So years before this, the man was loathsome.
It's so Schadenfreude to see him finally being hoisted with his own petard.
Dave & his writing staff weren't expecting the pushback from Palin Nation that they got. Nobody messes with our 'Cuda. He can thank his good buddy Al Gore for inventing that Internet thing. Sarah's defenders can mobilize a virtual army within 24 hours.
All we need is a George Soros to fund us and we could pretty much own the world in a year or two. (o;
Hey Dave- "Sarah Palin- you remember her? Governor of Alaska?"
You do now, don't you.
"Because the latter is taken as a joke; the former isn’t"
This is very pertinent and is my biggest complaint about Leftist Comedians like Letterman, Stewart and others. They want you to laugh a their jokes but then want to be taken seriously when they spew their propaganda disguised as comedy.
Lazy indeed Greg! And naive. What was Letterman thinking? Good grief….Gov. Palin hunts bear. Did Dave really think he could make tacky comments about Sarcuda's family and she would sit idly by? Or her supporters would sit idly by for that matter? I think not.
I'll concede on the Republicans vs. Conservatives. It's the Republicans that have me down – no fight. Palin isn't even recognized by them, really. How can they be so blind as to her appeal? I really love that site. I remember feeling bad for Hillary during the primaries – something I NEVER thought I would feel. I was rightly apprehensive about her winning…until I leaned about who the other candidate was.
The left party line is that Palin lost him the election. Which amazes me – being liberals they are factually challenged, but they don't seem to recall that McCain had a lead, which gained a little when Obama's shadier associations and tendencies started coming to light, but quickly fell when the media went full-bore on bashing McCain and fellating Obama. Then Palin boosted McCain again … and they lost the boost when the media realized she could derail their King, and started attacking her nonstop.
I had an argument recently with a liberal on this matter, and I was amazed at how he could – so cheerfully and smugly – say that Palin lost the election for McCain. I pointed out the statistics, and the fact that Couric won an AWARD specifically for attacking Palin. It was like talking to a brick wall.
Great article, Greg. You, sir, are not lazy. You could maybe do with a few more sit-ups, but, you know…
The establishment Republicans if you recall where the same way in 76 and 80. They treated Reagan as a provincial rouge. We all know what happened. My wife and daughter didn’t appreciate Letterman’s cavalier misogynist jokes one little bit, and complained to the sponsors and CBS. Apparently this was pervasive enough to elicit change at CBS and Letterman more specifically. Keep it up gang these liberal miscreants are a mile wide and a sixteenth of an inch thick, hit’em in the pocket and the rest will follow.
My wife and I love to vacation with the Hilton family, it’s nice that we wont have to cancel.
And one reason she is constantly being targeted for further attack. The left, as I said elsewhere, is SCARED TO DEATH of Sarah Palin and what she might become to the Conservative Cause.
As Rush said of her, she could pull a crowd of 20,000 in Pie Town, New Mexico, reading a cookbook aloud.
You have the Tactical Plan exactly right.
You don't know how accurate that last sentence is. They're like talking to children. They are SOOOOO open minded that they won't accept any other argument. And they'll hold their breath and stomp their feet until their faces turn blue. Or you send them to their government subsidized room!
its easy to pick on women, keep that in mind…let him go after Romney and family like they do the Palins….no one on the left is brave, they always take the yellow brick road because its safe..this time it backfired. No one is going to sit idly by anymore. Obama running the country into the ground is the catalyst for the right's ire.. DONT TREAD ON ME!
Look at Dave on the big-boyz bike. He thinks he's a conservative. Isn't the liberal's bike of choice a Schwinn with the obligatory dingy bell?
What I learned was that Sarah, for the most part, is forgiving and gracious to a fault.
Decide to go past that, and she flicks off the hockey gloves, smashes the lout into the boards like Letterman, and proceeds to beat them senseless in the best tradition of the hockey enforcer or goon squad.
I have decided to support fully any run at the Presidency she may make with money, time, and very hard work.
Certain enemies of this country, both foreign and domestic, would learn to walk by her VERY QUIETLY, lest the goon get loose again…
you missed the suit of suet, I saw it live..went over like a lead balloon LOL
Justin,
Would you please explain the phrase "right of center"? By "center" do you mean what's true, or do you just mean some sort of hopelessly undefinable and uninteresting average?
Seems to me that part of the trouble this nation faces (a small tip of an iceberg) is that we don't know how to think anymore. We don't even think about what our words signify. Sarah Palin advocates decency, instead of the garbage coming out of Letterman's mouth. Is that "right of center," or is not, rather, the thing we should obviously desire simply because it's right, period?
Letterman should not be fired for anything he said. He should be cancelled due to low ratings.
Who's still watching that crap?
Letter Who? Just another sellout goon to YoMamma's Nazi Corps.
[...] Daily Gut: Letterman Should Apologize for Being Lazy by Greg Gutfeld [...]
Wow, Greg, lashing out at David Letterman. It's almost as if you hate success, as discussed in the highly profound post by John Romano right below this one.
Like it or not, David Letterman will be able to buy you for a million dollar every month for the rest of your life and never feel the pinch, and you? You'll just keep flashing your smirk at the camera for your tiny, tiny claque. As the internet trendies say, Greg, MASSIVE FAIL.
Let's band together and raise the funds necessary to bail out comedy. How about a bake sale? I make a scrumptious truffle brownie.
Greg's show is more popular than Dave's right now, and there isn't a crushing boycott gearing up that would force him into a half-hearted sniveling apology.
Glenn, MASSIVE FAIL, MASSIVE TOOL.
Sorry Olympic, I accidently hit thumbs down on your post when I was going after Massive Fail Tool Glenn's (don't worry, he got his). Good post, too.
Greg, Letterman never apologized. He never manned-up. His apologies never reached the threshold of accepting unequivocal responsibility for his comments. Like many people he believes he's not responsible because he didn't intend to harm and everyone who was offended didn't understand. I'm sure they're proud of him at Ball U.
Dave Letterman is just one of the jerks. Bill Maher (I will never have HBO as long as he has a show), members of E! channel, Showbiz Tonight (A.J. Hammer, Lisa Bloom-how would she like it if someone told her to update her porn star look), MSNBC, CNN, and much of the print media all deserve public scorn as well.

I provided the link to Hillbuzz in the Jimmy Arone article, but my roommate was the one who pointed out the site to me. He posts on here as Gordon Winslow. We've often discussed the absence of outrage from feminists during the Bill Clinton scandal, so it was nice to see it surface from at least one faction of that movement.
And I'm a little jealous that I wasn't the first to think of "Dr. Utopia" as a nickname for Obama.
I complained to CBS twice. Once after the fact, and again after the non-apology. I've also called my congressman repeatedly – send out cards for the NRA, and contacted Ford and Honda and others to ask them to continue to advertise on Fox after the unwashed masses threatened a boycott after the Tiller murder. We are going to HAVE to get involved, or all is lost.
don't forget the Helmet, Gloves, Knee Pads and Googles….
Oh, let them scrape – if he has any.
How can A-Rod stay quiet on this?
He should be outraged at Letterman for this joke.
First, to the Big Hollywood powers-that-be. Thanks for straightening me out so that I can post again. (If this makes it on the board, then I know that whatever they did worked). Now to the point. Dave isn't going to change – he's going to remain a diehard liberal. However, my read is that he's going to think twice about what he says in the future. I didn't have any problem with what Greg said Dave's show was like (I don't watch it all the way through any more). I of course had major problems with the hypocritical comments he originally made. Even if it was about Bristol, and I think that we don't need to go through again that which has been so exhaustively covered in thousands of postings – he did the same thing with his main squeeze and he doesn't have a leg to stand on, morally. And his comments, again if directed against Bristol, demeaned millions of women who have had children out of wedlock throughout history; tens, or hundreds of thousands living today. But the laziness charge is the most egregious – if his writers didn't do their homework and find out just which daughter accompanied Sarah, it was still was his responsibility for actually saying it. His name is on the marquee, he sits up at the desk and pontificates and he's the one that everyone identifies as the show itself. So the most recent apology was about as good as it will get, and I'll be happy that we even got that. Should he get fired for his comments? Rightfully, yes. Look at Imus for precedence. Will he? Probably not. It will take a lot more brouhaha than we can generate for the CBS hierarchy to be forced to fire someone that can bring in the revenue that Dave does. So I'll take his apology – if he does it again, I may be outside of his studio with a torch or pitchfork myself.
I think we should all thank Dave. Through his laziness, he has opened a Pandora's box. People are sick and tired of the arrogance and uncivilized behaviour of left-leaning entertainers, the MSM, and politicians and their apologists. Instead of winning with grace, the left feels that they are entitled to sink to every derogatory level, exhibiting all kinds of base and demeaning behaviour towards anyone on the right. What they don't realize is how helpful they are being in reinvigorating the right, and that with their help, they are paving the way for changes in 2010 –
So we should really give a big shout out to Dave and say, THANKS!
"Letterman + Liberal = Lazy!"
According to my math, that means Letterman = zero.
You get it, Greg–
Letterman's mistake was in thinking that Sarah Palin would employ the same passive "tarbaby offense" employed with diminishing effectiveness by President Bush for eight years. Instead, she smashed his jape straight back at his head and kept up the pressure till he and CBS cried "uncle!"
All those "laugh it off" Good Sport Conservatives need to follow her lead and learn to play for keeps.
Really, Glenn? I thought I just saw Letterman jump the shark!
Go to FireLetterman.com I will continue to call for Letterman's firing for at least 30 days.
Dave Letterman should apologize for impersonating the edgy, funny comedian he used to be. Now he's merely an attack dog for his political masters. Sad.
Like pretending you have any talent, you hack?
Guns N' Bibiles– love the name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![
[ and the post ]
sincerely,
p.s.– i'm not a good typer!!!!
I could'nt agree with you more. I personally fired him during the Clintern admin.
See, there's the problem, that you and so many people think it is alright to debase an 18-yr-old girl with a joke about promiscuity, just because she is 18 and not 17 or younger. The fact that joking about promiscuity is considered "normal" is a major indicator of the problems we have in our society. It is probably not too hard to directly, or indirectly, link most of our society's problems to the "sexual revolution" (high divorce rate, high sexually transmitted disease rate, high unwed pregnancy rate, to name a few direct problems). Over materialism associated with the pursuit of the "glamorous" lifestyles promoted by the media, largely using sex as a motivation, can be linked to higher crime and illegal drug use, and probably a few other problems. I don't care who you are, sex isn't that big of a deal, really. The fact our country obsesses over sex is pretty pathetic.
About time someone pointed out what a tool A(rrogant) J(erk) Hammer is, not just on this site but in general…
I'm gueesing he couldn't care less (as well as Eliot Spitzer, who was also name-checked in that "joke") that he was part of a really lame joke that's not worth making that big a fuss about in the grand scheme of things…
Good for you! Must be nice to have no real purposse in life…
To be fair, most dogs have more energy and show more effort in whatever they do than that old fart does at this point…
I believe you are the only one talking about money here Glenn. Is that the only measure of success? Sure hasn't made Letterman any happier. I know it's hard for liberals to stay on topic without it sliding into personal attacks and whacky logic but we're pulling for you all to join the rational side of the human race. Really.
Letterman invited Sarah Palin on his show as part of the peace treaty. But Sarah told him, since he wronged her, she would not appear on his home turf. She invited him to appear on her home turf, the Jerry Springer Show.
Yes! He is a hack and I can't fathom why he is proud of it.
Right. He is a total jerk. For some strange reason, he holds a pen in his hand like he is doing serious journalism. He reports on mindless celebrities.
i read the title of this entry and yelled at my computer screen, "EXACTLY!" and then had a good laugh.

You are correct StanH…Before he picked Sarah I was not going to vote for McAmnesty–just sit-out the whole damn mess. The DemLibs are so unhinged about Sarah because they truly understand the threat she is to their continued rule.
Sad to see someone you used to think was so cool and would always "stay above the fray" be so stupidly angry. Why??? Because this terrible (Bush whacked?) country has SO wronged and disturbed him?? That Palin is SUCH an enemy that she MUST be ridiculed and therefore stopped??!! Yeah, he really doesn't care, he has plenty of money to see him and his kid through, but wow, we are disappointed. The people who stayed with him through many "controversies", and he just continues to bash O'Reilly and anyone right of center because he wants to.. I can't watch anymore. My stomach turns….
