Daily Gut: Panetta vs. Cheney
by Greg GutfeldSo in the latest New Yorker, CIA Director Leon Panetta says Dick Cheney’s biting criticism of Obama’s enlightened approach to terrorism suggests, “he’s wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point.”
Now Mr. Panetta is absolutely right about one thing: Cheney has been highly critical of the Obama Administration’s new tact toward terror. But that’s mainly because our new President has been so critical of the previous administration’s strategy, while now pretty much copying most of its key elements.
But after that, Panetta makes a fundamental error in his reasoning. See, he mistakes Cheney for a leftwinger. Remember, it was during the Bush Administration that the left milked the hell out of tragedy and calamity to make sure they won in November. Liberal bloggers never met a car bomb they didn’t front page, and lefty pontificators would wet themselves whenever an opportunity to portray our soldiers as seething barbarians presented itself. Hell, you remember the mini-industry of films made about how awful the Iraq war was. They failed miserably at the box office, but helped achieve a loftier goal: they pulled crisis out of success, cementing a win in November.
I used to call these folks patriotic terrorists – people who claim they love their country, but need that same country to suffer, so they can win. Cheney isn’t one of those people. At least to me, he’s always seemed to put the security of his country before everything else, especially his popularity. Which is probably why Panetta can’t stand him. Unlike Obama, Dick just doesn’t give a fuck.
Tonight we’ve got Mike Baker, Father Jonathan Morris, comedian Jesse Joyce, and much, much more.

This is going to be unpopular but I don't care.
Greg why stoop to a vulgarity to make your point? I am no prude, and use colorful languge more often than I should. The censors on this site won't allow us to use such words or many others that are not offensive at all, and I think it is mostly a good thing. I come here to read both professional and amateur comments that raise the level of discourse. I'm sorry you chose to forgo that.
I'm not offended because I choose not to be, just disappointed.

The old "bad news is good news" for liberals. Cheney, like most sane people, would rather avoid the bad news from happening by talking about it and putting policy and action into place so it doesn't happen. Liberals want the bad news to happen so they have another opportunity that won't go to waste.
Whenever a leader starts to make hysterical, inciteful comments, you know that he's getting desperate. Panetta should be removed. He's obviously in way over his head.
Very strong words indeed Greg, sometimes it is what's needed. In this case I believe it is justified.
As is the majority of this administration.
I don't worry about Dick Cheney he's a Big Boy he knows how to handle himself. Whenever he debates The Opposition he makes them look like the Boneless Hacks that they are, because unlike them He Knows What He's Talking About.
Another big fail Greg. -1
That's too bad. I thought Panetta might be the lone voice or reason in this administration. I guess his handlers have other plans for him.
He is in over his head, but at least he's one that pays his taxes…
Liberals have always been accused of being "soft" in the area of foreign policy and defense. They, of course, claim they are not, but there is enough reason behind the accusations that they are "stung" a bit. It was so easy to point out that the left had many of the same positions about the Bush administration as Al Queda. As Rush used to put it, they needed America to fail in order to win. Panetta is just playing politics, thinking he can do the old Mongolian reversal and paint Cheney as rooting against America. It's a pretty obvious and stupid ploy to me.
it didn't bother me, but I understand and respect your point of view. Over the weekend, I had a post held back because I repeated a joke Sammy Davis Junior made about himself. It wasn't even controversial, so I concluded there is no administrator sitting there passing judgement. Rather, certain words must automatically flag a post. I can understand the need for this site to have something in play in that regard even if it sometimes doesn't end up making the correct judgement.
It also goes with their Sol Alinsky sensibility of never let a criticism go unchallenged and try to marginalize and destroy opponents, particularly those that seem to be gaining in popularity (see Sarah Palin as another example.)
All I know is I am glad Cheney has finally got his head out of the sand and is defending the good things the Bush Admin did… :/ Especially since the Dem's favorite passtime and phrase seems to be "Blame Bush!"
Absolutely true. Dems needed Iraq to fail so that we would leave and blame Bush, needed the economy to tank to they can pass wider social safety nets (and nationalize industry), need class warfare to pass higher taxes, need to race bait to pass "social justice" laws. The basic reason is that they want to fundamentally change America, and in order to persuade people to do that, they need to convince us that the current system isn't working.
We should be worried about a party that is so invested in America's failure.
If Bush and company were half as articulate as Cheney, at least the last few weeks, his approval rating might be higher than child molesters and Nancy Pelosi.
I too am disappointed in Panetta, who seemed to be one of the precious few reaonable voices of the Obama Admin…….His most recent statements smack of political hackery, and can be seen as pre-spinning the Obama administration's inevitable response to another attack on the homeland, with an original twist, thus: It's Cheney's Fault! (blaming Bush is already wearing thin, and isn't likely to work in this circumstance…)
Hopefully this pre-spin will be unnecessary, but they've inherited so much to deal with, they can (and will) be excused, at least by the media, in the event of a relatively minor attack, by former gitmo inmates, for example….
Another 9/11, however, and no amount of spin will help, not that they won't try…..

I agree. And everytime he speaks you can almost hear liberal sphincters slam shut.
I never understood the label he got that he was a monster. What did he do that was so monstrous??
Worried, little ricky?
Where's all the useless soapbox pontificating you usually subject us to?
Tick, tock, goes the clock. You better move up your timetable to enslave the US; even the quiet, distracted people are starting to pay attention…and they don't like you guys.
Tick, tock, tick, tock,…
Leon Panetta is a good and dedicated public servant, but not an intelligence officer- nor a policy expert, either.
He correctly dressed down the botox queen Pelosi over her absurdities and feels a need to re-establish his liberal bonafides by getting into a dust-up with Cheney…
Therefore this present silliness. Of course Cheney doesn't want another attack; this is a ridiculous assertion.
However one suspects another to be forthcoming…
Then he's definitely not right for this administration…..
It is interesting to note that Panetta, who has very little intelligence experience (whoa…don't want to forget that last word), is running an organization that also has record morale problems since the current administration's rise/ascension/rapture to power. Panetta's logic is impeccably liberal…blame (insert_past_Republican_official_here) if any future attacks occur. By extension, does Panetta mean that if everyone ceases to criticize Obama's feel-good approach to terrorism, then the U.S. will be safer?
yep- he dismissed her 'CIA are liars' comment, and quite forcefully as well. He is an honourable man for a liberal- a rare but wonderful thing…
GWB has decided to be a civil, quiet, non-political retiree from public commentary, as opposed to those big-mouth Dixiecrats Clinton and Carter.
But ol' Cheney; he's had enough, and since he doesn't need any political backside kissing, receiving OR giving, has decided to Cowboy Up and have at the juvenile delinquents. In the process, he's proving he's smarter, more clever, more talented, more capable, and just an all-around better man than the current Metrosexual crop in power. Including Hillary.
Sucks to be a Democrat in charge as the people wake up and all say, "Whatthehell!!"
Thanks- I yanked my earlier comment since it was answered; don't know where I was when that story happened. I just don't remember him coming out swinging.
Rick and his crew are worried. It's delicious
I think Greg was playing off of Darth Vaders words to a member of the Senate. I believe the "f" word was used to convey a strong message to one of the crap weasels like Harry Reid. But I could be wrong because I am not Greg, and I have not a clue as to what vast and wonderous things go on in his mind. LOL!
Ricky! Ricky! You go away now or I'll tell BevfromNYC or 2Soccergirls to go after you . It won't be pretty. Those Gals aren't Hon's their Hun's. They don't like taking prisoners. Quit while your behind. Shoo!
yeah__use a religious name or even certain fruit and it will block you . Sometime I can't even figure it out at all as to what could possibly be the problem.____Foul language doesn't bug me usually, I use it myself. But I do think it is a weak way to make a point and would prefer our messengers to stay out of the verbal gutter.
"I used to call these folks patriotic terrorists – people who claim they love their country, but need that same country to suffer, so they can win."
Absolutely perfect! For years I've been trying to figure out how I feel about these people, and you have just done it for me!
Thank you!
Two more thumbs up for Cheney!
I don't remember Vader cussing, but maybe you can remind me. And I am all for stong messages (not the Hans Blix type). I believe strong messages can be conveyed without resorting to the low brow.
"O, it offends me to the soul to hear a robustious periwig-pated fellow tear a passion to tatters, to very rags, to split the ears of the groundlings, who for the most part are capable of nothing but inexplicable dumb shows and noise. I would have such a fellow whipped for o'erdoing Termagant. It out-herods Herod. Pray you avoid it. Be not too tame neither, but let your own discretion be your tutor. Suit the action to the word, the word to the action, with this special observance, that you o'erstep not the modesty of nature."
If we speak to and as the "groundlings" we can not be upset later when we are accused of being the same.
He exists that is his crime.
I never understood it either. Apart from the war Bush/Cheney did a lot of things the left should have loved.
Seeing the sweat beads run off of his little head has just made my day.
Well he did not get the name "Lying Leon" for nothing.
I for one think this is cya in case we are attacked. Biden said Obama would be challenged. Take a look at the world! This is challenge at warp speed! Leon is no dummy, and many know it is just a matter of time before we are hit. Heck, al-Qaeda announced they want to attack us with anthrax via our weak borders, and right after this announcement, we find one massive tunnel from Mexico to Texas. Insert red flashing light here!
Norks are screaming and Iran is burning, why not say something like this to make a strike preemptive strike using Cheney as the scapegoat in case we are hit? This to me makes Leon look like a little kid saying, "It's not my fault! Heeee did it!"
Then you have to factor in the Stache, a.k.a. John Bolton. He has said time and time again that Obama's policies, and Bush's for that matter, are way off and we are weakening when it comes to terrorist thinking twice before attacking us.
And the cherry on the top was a story that ran this weekend on Fox about Pelosi transferring powers from the CIA to the FBI. It involves the Miranda Rights being read to prisoners on the battlefield.
All of this does matter because of how Cheney might be perceived by Joe Q. Banana, who has not the first clue as to what is going on in the world. What Cheney is saying is extremely important, and the reactions to it by Zero and Gang give you an insight as to how they think about keeping us safe, and how they also use intelligence gathered by the CIA. That atrocious speech Zero gave in front of the Constitution and Cheney's speech contrasted only proves the Left will never know the difference between a "freedom fighter" or a jihadist, a military hero or a DHS memo "terrorist" and my fav- "a patriotic" person or a Congressional member voting to release pictures which would hurt our nation and military.
But Greg is right, Darth Vader does not care, and his response today was a flashback to when Luke got his hand lopped off for thinking he was ready to play with the big boy.
LOL!
Comes from hand to hand combat with teenagers!
But there may be a need for me to whip out the old needle and thread in order to stitch the "sphincter"* shut.
*Credit of the use of this word here must go to Hank Scorpio.
Only Lefties are allowed to use the Alinsky strategy. If someone like, oh, Sarah Palin, challenges criticisms of her family– then it's the action of a hysterical, overreacting female.
Remember how whenever the death toll in Iraq reached a nice even number, the lefties would automatically have protest march? It was almost as if they were looking forward to the next Grim Milestone so they could get their faces on the 6 o'lock news waving their little Bu$Hitler signs around.
Panetta is clueless. What his qualifications are for this job I don't know, sending an aide to sit on Security Counsel meetings during the Clinton years hardly seems like that makes him the "right guy". Then he takes on Pelosi right off the bat, actually I like that (hee hee, she's a total lightweight) God help us with the brigade of clowns driving the bus.
It wasn't harsh language at all, imagine what would have been said if Panetta had the cojones to say to Cheney in person. He could ask Sen.Leahy what to expect.
Cheney is a great American and has the best resume in government, well almost as good as Rumsfeld.
Now what kind of president would have the luck to have both these guys in his administration at once ?
Well, democrats need not apply…………
Looks like some false outrage here.
sure why not?
why would I want to show the superiority of our stance by acting superiorly? I mean if i use crude language and shiny things and naked girls, that will really get to the general public right? That will show them how to rise above and excell and overcome their base instincts.
I didn't say outrage. I said disappointed. But yeah I'm putting on a show. Whatever you say.
This is just the way the Washington game is played. Cheney could offer a recipe for oatmeal cookies and some democrat would criticize him for it. No one can question his concern for this country's security. Panetta on the other hand has a position to protect. Meanwhile, the Democrats are fiddling while our porous southern border suffers. Panetta is wrong. Ya can't love a terrorist into submission. They will strike again when the time suits them. I'm surprised Mr Panetta would stoop to attacks ad hominem. I guess he was struggling for something to say.

I was talking to an aquaintance today who lives up in Canada. She's doesn't follow politics, at home or here, but she asked me a political question today that I had no answer for. She asked me, "Why does your President and his people spend so much time "carping" (her word) about people like Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin?
She doesn't even know who Limbaugh is but said she hears his name mentioned by our White House all the time! She said it seems "kind of childish"………..
I couldn't answer that. I felt stupid. I couldn't explain why my President acts like a 12 yr old schoolgirl!
Because Greg is an entertainer not a news anchor. I laughed for days when he said to "call GLAAD and ask for Dick" after they gave him their version of worst person in the world award. Sometimes that stuff is funny sometimes not. You have a right to your opinion. I just thought I might add a different perspective.
What if hussein and czars know that an attack is impossible to prevent, and by alinskying Cheney they can blame him for the outcome. To analyze thuggery is very difficult….this is high art, not politics as usual.
CYA is so right. Panetta is Øbama's (or the teleprompter's) lap dummy. They realize that the WoT (or the artist formerly known as the WoT) is now the Dims' bailiwick, and all Panetta was trying to do is pass the hot potato back to Vice President Cheney.
Also, if I hear "inherited" one more time out of Øbama, the teleprompter gets it. Cheers, Frank
suggests, “he’s wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point.”
Why all this stuff about Cheney. Did Joe, foot in the mouth, Biden not say that we would be hit or at least challenged within the first, what, 6 months of the Obama Administration.
So, was Biden wishing that this country would be hit to prove his point?
Sphincter…Always a good word to have in your lexicon when dealing with Hard -Lefties especially those from San Francisco or of course when referring to our own Ricky the Poo Ross.
I'm with you, Buckwheat. Resorting to vulgarity is just being lazy. I used to work for a boss who swore like a drunken sailor. The more I had to hear, the less respect I had for him.
Primer – this is what you tell her. Presidents are essentially politicians and the president is engaging in politics by trying to carp at his opponents. The best presidents rise above politics and become "statesmen." Some gooey cheerleading editors of national weekly news magazines actually think our current president has already risen to God-like status (a step up even from "statesman.") I don't know whether that editor is being disingenuous or is actually that star-struck. Your acquaintance in Canada is clearly bright enough to instinctively know he is just a politician.
Panetta, like his overlord/mistress, the Hildabeast, only have positions within the O'dministration to keep them quiet, occupied, and somewhat loyal so they cannot even think about beginning to campaign against the Lord Obama in 2012. Since his affluent DC lifestyle is dependent upon loyalty to the O, at least for the next four years, he is required to politicize and make excuses/set up excuses for the next potential attack and anything else that might possibly go wrong/be wrong in the United States. Democraps suck!
Leon Panetta was not made CIA Director to improve America's intelligence capabilities. He was appointed because he is an inside-the-beltway hack who can counted on to put the right spin on any unwelcome overseas developments or keep them under the radar entirely. I'm sure most of his day is taken up with implementing diversity programs and insuring that CIA output matches the preconceived ideas of the Sun King. His remarks concerning Cheney were unforgivable but are par for the course these days.
I think he said there would be an "international crisis" within the first six months. And he was right. It's been one crisis after another since Obama took office.
Si se puede
Viva El CHEney!
Followup: Cheney's reaction to Panetta's statement is just priceless. He said, "Maybe what he said was misinterpreted by the media." LOL! In other words, like the writer said, Dick just doesn't give a f….k. By the way, excellent article! I love "Patriotic terrorists" like Pelosi, Murtha, Leahy, Durbin, Schumer amd others. The Cindy Sheehan crowd-just so whacked out its nice to give them a name.
Dick Cheney Rocks!
You're right about the being stung part. I had a sales trainer that talked about how you only react to something that is true…If you say someone is a green tree frog, and if they think they might be, and it's a bad thing, they'll react negatively.
Morris & Baker, sounds like a great episode in the making Greg.
The Democrats always say bad things about their opposition parties .It reminds me that the pro communist
party in my country always blames the pro Us government until they can win the political war.My country fell to
the hands of those people after South Vietnam fell to the hands of the Vietcongs.
Yeah, Panetta could not have made a comment anymore hypocritical had he put some real thought in it, and I am glad you made the point. See you are getting a bit of flack about the f bomb. The word is so overused now that it doesn't have the impact I need when I stub my toe..You could always talk like that deranged fan in Steven King's –Misery. I think she came out with "cockadoody" when REALLY upset. Then again, this probably isn.t going to do the trick., Oh well, wtf.
I agree. I was just starting to think of Panetta as one of the "good guys" over there.
His statement was just lame. Even Panetta knows it's not true.
Gotta agree with ya, Buckwheat. Poor choice of the word by our friend, Greg. But hey …
(By the way, I'm 64 years old and it was once said jokingly of me — just recently, in fact — that I came out of the womb saying the "F" word — probably something along the lines of "what the F" — so I, too, would not fit in the prude category.)
Love your commentary, Greg! Keep up the great writing!
GO CHENEY! GIVE 'EM HELL!
Paneta is a Clinton hack now re-employed by Obama. Disgraceful comment by Paneta. This creep, Paneta, is a spy for Obama in the CIA. God help us!
Panetta was a civil rights lawyer. Now he runs the CIA. Makes sense, right?
Yeah, where are all those anti-war libbies anyway????
Tell me where Cheney's patriotism was during the Viet Nam War. He is pretty brave when it comes to shooting off his mouth. When it comes to fighting, not so much!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A36...
It was made to Leaky. Senator Depends.
I was not endorsing foul language, but I was explaining why IMO I thought Greg used the word. I saw the connection, and it reminded me of the afore mentioned incident which I found rip roaring hilarious. Who here would not like the opportunity to say something strongly worded to Senator Depends? As a Southern female, I could cut him down to size without ever using a single curse word. This ability is taught to Southern females while in the womb. LOL!
There is nothing wrong with trying to advocate for higher standards and I see no evidence of false outrage here, but I do think there is a point of reference and Greg should not be tarred and feathered for it.
Unlike others in this post, Panetta didn't disappoint me. He is the political hack and Obama mouthpiece that I always thought he was since the day he was appointed to the job. What else would you expect from an Obama puppet? I also think Dick Cheney now sees the real Panetta and he will now rip the turd to shreds. Because it is just as you say, Greg. Dick doesn't care about the Left's stupid opinion of him and he would rather cause the Obama administration to get a hernia than supress the truth of the matter. I rather like that in a conservative.

they do the same with gun control.
