Daily Gut: War Vets and the People Who Play Them
by Greg GutfeldSo once there was a man who had been arrested for violently beating another man – simply because he took his picture. Previously, he`d been busted for beating his own wife. Another man was busted for drugs – the least of his problems, since he`d previously shot his fiancé. And then there was this other creep named Tom – nailed for assault and battery, dealing in crystal meth, and most recently – down on his luck – busted for stealing cell phones.
A sad bunch, really.
Now if you`re Janet Napolitano, then you’re probably assuming I’m referring to a common sampling of our nation`s vets returning from Iraq or Afghanistan. After all, it was her report that said we`ve got a pile of damaged souls on our hands, on the brink, and ready to snap.
But actually I’m not: like Janet, I was only making a cursory assessment about a group of people – actors, actually – from recent anti-war films.
The fact is, it’s not the vets we have to worry about, it’s the jackasses who play them.
But isn’t that the joke here? For the last thirty years, Hollywood has perpetuated the myth of the troubled vet – egged on by the cacklers on the coasts, nearly all of whom have never met a war vet in their life. To them, every dude in a uniform is Timothy McVeigh.
The real truth is that, nearly all military dudes are delightfully decent and even mundane – far saner than you and me – and without a doubt much more fun than Napolitano – a person, who, as Governor Rendell once pointed out, doesn’t get out much. She probably just rents “The Road to Guantanamo” repeatedly off Netflix, while thinking of new words to describe terror that won`t hurt anyone`s feelings.
And that`s what gets me. Right now we have an administration that cares more about the feelings of those who want to kill us, than those who want to protect us.
I mean, if Janet were around in the 1940`s, we`d probably all be speaking Austrian.
TONIGHT: Diana Falzone, Hampton Stevens, and comedian Tim Slagle. Plus my mom.

Greg,
You failed to mention that Tom was busted once for parole violation while using a prosthetic penis. No joke.
He was using it to provide a fake urine sample for a mandated drug test.
Did you know that you can order those things on the internets?
Of course there is also that star from "The Kingdom" who was recently was encouraging teen drug abuse and the production of child born. Obviously a pedophile the government should keep an eye on.
Sorry, "Child porn" not "child born". I'm sure any potential "childs born" as a result of "child porn" will be aborted.
Saw your show last night. Chubby-face with the glasses needs a reality check, but Hemmer did a good job of straightening him out. The fool kept fixating on "one or two well-trained vets" as the ultimate danger, and how the report was just fine not mentioning all the real threats because it was "only a report" and was sent "privately to police departments." What the hell kind of argument is that? He actually seemed to think that it was OK for the report to mention only people who disagree with Obama, and ignore Osama.
DHS needs to stop sitting at home watching the "war" and get out and speak to the men and women whom serve this country. The service members take an Oath when they enter the military. The are trained daily on what that Oath means.
When Napolitano took the oath when she entered the office at DHS she must have thought she was just reading a script. Napolitano needs to be trained daily on what the oath she took means to this country.
Nicht schiezten, nicht schiezten!!! Ha… great article, Greg.
"…an administration that cares more about the feelings of those who want to kill us, than those who want to protect us." Are we sensing a pattern here re. our friends on the Left?
The huggy-feelies and warm fuzzies are only for the terrorists, sorry, IED Redistributionists. They're not for our returning heroes. Most all of whom I've met, (and I've met a lot) are very decent, professional and bright folks. The dipheads in power are showing their cards too soon — Don't they want to make it to the 2010 elections before they're run outta town on a rail?
Janet Napolitano calls veterans terroist, Rep. Murtha is getting honored by the US Navy for what? Hanging our Marines out to dry and our current administration wants to hang out with our enemies. Our officials act as if they want to rip our country apart from the inside. I served in combat for my country to stand strong, not for it to rip its self apart . I know I served my country. Napolitano, Murtha, and all their liberal friends will say they served, but serving ones on interests doesn't count as service to one's country
Gary, I've said the same thing elsewhere. They have exposed themselves, to which I say, good. Now we have obvious targets. I hope some folks start or have started to wake up. I "think" so.
—"So they've got us surrounded, good! Now we can fire in any direction, those b*****ds won't get away this time!"
Lt. Col. Lewis B. Puller, USMC, Chosin Resivior, Korea, 1950
Yeah I was rooting Hemmer on even though I usually like "Chubby face with glasses" in general. The problem I had was not only is the privately released to police a silly argument, but to me it's actually more dangerous if you're releasing such nonsense to people that actually have the power to do something about it if they so choose. It's not a leap to think of some overzealous blue county sheriff deciding to go all Will Teasle on a vet because he didn't like the war and doesn't like the people that fought in it.
So not only was it a ridiculous argument but it was 180 degrees wrong in it's ridiculousness, if the report was just an Op-Ed by Napalitano in the NYT it'd still be bad, but the NYT readership really has no way to do anything substantive based on it. Whereas cops, and I know a lot of them, most of whom are great guys, do have the power to use this as a justification. Will they? No, most won't, because frankly most of the police I know around here are veterans too, but the capacity for abuse is there.
Murtha is beyond reprehensible. Marines call all Marines, current and former, brother. On this, I will make an exception. Murtha is ……never mind.
Thanks, for your trigger time PV. We appreciate it greatly. Go easy, bro.
I'm still steaming about this 'report.' I think they probably tipped their hand too soon.
Now I'm thinking about who my friends are – the weenie politicians who line their friends' pockets and insult their constituents? Or the soldiers who protect me, my family and my country? Hmmmmm….. I'll take the soldiers any day.
As far as I know Austrian is not a language – they speak German.
How many times does the American populace have to be clubbed with a flippin 2 x 4 before they realize the chincanery of these people………*groan*
Strap-on C4 terrorists or gov sponsored strap-on terror? Close call.
God Bless our vets
Even though Hemmer hammered, it was actually Andy Levy who got Chubby-face to look down and semi-admit his whole argument was really weak.
Their argument about how the report is supposedly OK because it was "just a report, distributed privately to police departments and law enforcement" reeks to high heaven. Isn't that actually the true danger of the whole thing? "Let's keep it hush-hush that we have singled out certain groups of potential terrorists for investigation and followup. Don't let anybody know, or they might get angry and go all First Amendment on us." Its very attempted secrecy is the real proof of how sneaky this administration is about trying to suppress dissent. "Gestapo" is a German acronym for "secret police." What will Obama call his secret police? And will we know before it's too late?
Harumph! I think they're exposing themselves mainly because they know that if things don't change soon, they have a limited time to get their agenda pushed through. So the gloves are off and they're going to try to get everything they wanted as fast as they can, while they still can. I could be wrong, but that's what my feeling is, they're betting the house (literally) on getting a good run at the table before they get dragged away.
Tell that to Herr Obama.
I think he meant Australian.
One day, someone will explain to me why our society puts any value at all into people who are good at dramatically reading other people's words.
I'd like to see Murtha pay a price the crimes he committed defaming fellow Marines. "Chesty" Puller would kick his ass if he were still around…well he'd kick ALOT of ass if he were still around. People like him should be part of COMPULSORY education for kids today. I'm confident that we have proud "sons" of Chesty in the USMC today, they should pull together and censure Murtha. He's a polluted politician, he sold his soul.
He's busy. Rossetta Stone is whipping up some "Austrian" c.d.s for him to learn Austrian from. He's gonna work on "New Mexican" next so he can visit Richardson in Santa Fe.
Austria is where they keep all those kangeroos and koala bears.
Oh dear. I have responded. That means I suppose that I have been moved by ones comments. So, can someone explain to me why, those outside of America who have fought against us are no longer terrorists, but those who have fought for America are now known as possible terrorists?
I
To KEN IN IRVINE" I AGREE. I have yet to figure that out. The morons of the movie industry, robbins, streisand, garfaleo or whatever the lesbian's name is and the rest are people who can read and not very well at that.
I want napolitano to know that all of the right wing extremists have one thing in common. WE LOVE AMERICA. It is too bad she and the FASCIST president do not agree.
Folks, this anti-Vet screed isn’t new, especially the anti-Viet Nam Vet “albatross” that has been hanging around our necks for over 40 years now. This is just the “hanging” of a new and fattened albatross on a new generation of warriors.
It’s not just in the mooovies mind you that this bias exists. During my current 5 year “child custody war” I’ve been forced to be involved with, every time I’ve sat in that family law court room, (going on 35 times just next week), the very first words out of the opposing attorney's mouth is, “Your honor, Mr. “Right Wing Radical Extremist” here is …(wait for it)…A VIET NAM VET!, (Que sound of bombs blowing up puppies, bullets whizzing over head shattering the lives of the innocent, while blood chilling screams echo off the marble walls.) And, it works against me almost every time. (Hence the 5 years battle.)
I’ve been commenting on this very subject for years now to, (mostly), deaf ears. I knew it was coming to haunt our vets again sooner or later.
This new attack on our War Vets is planned, discussed and sanctioned by the Bambi administration, merely to win approval of his far left loony voting block, that lives with glee at hating the very people that gave them the “privilege” to hate us.
Not Over.
You have to wonder if people like Janet Napolitano actually believe some of the things that they profess to hold so profoundly. Or do they just say some of this tripe because the Left expects it. In her heart of heart can she really understand that without the vets she now wants to lump as potential terrorists, there are real terrorists who would think no more of beheading her or treating her like chattle than she thinks of shooting off her mouth,
DHS needs to be disbanded.
We already have the FBI, we don't need another bunch of worthless bureaucrats sucking off tax dollars, decorating office buildings and wasting time writing memos designed to stroke their boss's political members.
Was there ever a more Goebbelian named department? (look ma, I invented a word!)
Gestapo got their name because an office clerk couldn't figure out how to get "Geheime Staatspolizei" to fit on a rubber stamp, he decided Gestapo sounded snappy, and thus a name that struck terror into the hearts of millions was born. Which is just further proof that the clerks are the dangerous ones, and that the most terrible titles can have rather pedestrian beginnings.
With that in mind I'm betting on the Hopey Change Truth Corps. Or Hochtruco for short, it sounds vaguely ethnic in a comfortably non-definable way which will appeal to the left.
I thought that was Greenland.
Not personal enough. Remember, this is "the leader" who is protecting us. I propose "Ostco," The Obama Secret Truth Corps
Maybe even "Ostcor" so Hollywood could have an annual event.
I think Janet and Obama believe what they say with great conviction. They learned well from their leftist professors and never evolved into thinking otherwise. Mostly because everyone they hung with reinforced their beliefs.
Using the logic "We should not insite terrorist by treating them mean" is the same logic as "We should not be mean to rapists because they will rape more".
Focusing on returning vets confuses the issue of who the bad guy really is.
For the life of me I just can't figure out why the good people of the once great state of PA keep VOTING for the EX-marine tuba player, Murtha.
Please, someone from that state 'splain it to me please.
It it something in the water out there?
Not Over.
I was thinking digbats, even though that one was taken a long time ago.
I think now is the time for more vets to run for public office, especially in US Congress. This may be an all-time low for prior-military congressmen and senators. I remember Dennis Miller reflecting that McCain's defeat was one last "screw you" to Vietnam Vets. It's time to swell the ranks. Your country still needs you.
Greg, keep up your excellent work. Your self-effacing charm allows the public to hear your fearless, intelligent insight.
Further, you're more fair interviewing your guests (left and right) than any of the leftard hosts. Your show is way more entertaining too — pure comedy for your viewers without the sycophantic fanboy in-studio audience like Stewart.
And if you disagree with me, you're worse than Hitler.
You mean all vets aren't over-drugged sadists who have this overwhelming urge to kill innocent civilians because they have flashbacks of the war zone where they committed heinous hate crimes against innocent freedom fighters who's only crimes were trying to defend their country? Really? Say it ain't so.
"They called it the Department of Homeland Security. Probably a mistake, because there were a lot of Germans going 'That's a good one…'
"They should have called it Home Front Security. That one sounds more like England in World War II. Old men with pitchforks and colostomy bags, defending the country! 'Yes, I captured Rudolf Hess personally. I threw my colostomy bag at him, covered him in shyte, and I yelled 'GET OUT OF THAT FOKKER, YOU F_CKER!'"
– Robin Williams
Of course, the problem with that is that it isn't their own cash they're spending. They'll get kicked out of the casino, but we're the ones stuck begging on the street corner to collect plane fare home.
No matter who's strapping it on, someone's getting pegged.
For Janet Napolitano to have said that is just utterly stupid. Nothing from the Obama gang surprises me anymore. They are "common sense impaired" big time.
I was raised to be gratefull to those who risk their lives for the freedoms that too many people abuse, not respect or do not appreciate. Nor do they appreciate the sacrifices made by these individuals who receive very little praise or thank you (even if they are not expected) but are ridiculed and made out to be the bad guy.
I guess Janet forgot that military people come from all walks of life and can not be pigeon-holed in one category or another.
Exactly, and that's what the folks at CNN, MSNBC and Capitol Hill didn't quite understand yesterday.
Overall, I would say that America is in great shape. Do not worry folks. IF THINGS GET REALLY BAD, Perhaps once again Poland will come (gladly) to the rescue of Christianity! http://www.historyofjihad.org/austria.html, this is being written with a tad bit of sarcasm, but then again one never does know, do they? GOD BLESS AMERICA (and Poland).
I think you're on to something, Greg. After all, Lincoln's assassin was an actor.
Awesome post! I love it.
This is about the 3rd time I've tried to explain it, but I don't mind because I really want people to know the state of my birth and where I happen to be sitting at the moment, isn't completely bat—t insane despite some signs to the contrary like Murtha, Specter and Rendell.
Specifically Murtha's district is a gerrymandered trainwreck. He likes to get on TV saying that he represents "Rural Pennsylvanians" and if you go to his main office in Johnstown it could look that way to you. But if you look at the map of his district you'll see that while most of the land area is rural, the vast of the population is sitting in suburbs or satellite towns of Pittsburgh. These are more urban areas that historically vote Democrat straight down the ballot, lots of union voters and other groups who historically vote that way. So when he says that Western Pennsylvanians are "rednecks and racists" and people wonder how he can get away with insulting his constituents and still get voted in, well he's not insulting most of his constituents, in fact the ones that keep him in office agree with him. He brings a lot of pork home to that area so even Democrat voters who would normally be turned off by some of his rhetoric vote for him anyhow, the more rural parts of his district frankly hate the man to a man, but they're outgunned at the ballot box by the more urban (even Johnstown is urban for that part of PA, let alone the crescent he gets around Pittsburgh) votes that his district is tailor-made to pick up.
And no I don't live in his district, I'm from one of the really, really rural ones. One of the ones that voted 70% for McCain, hasn't elected a Representative that was a Democrat since the early '70s (after we broke free of our own gerrymandering) and where everyone has guns, dogs and SUVs. You know, the people Obama talked about in San Francisco.
Uh, no one, since none of the other people replying have made it clear (although I'm sure they get it, and Golani came closest) I'll explain it to you. Gut was making a joke in reference to "The Most Intelligent President That Ever, Ever Was" who did refer to Austrian being a language. It wasn't funny when Obama said it, though. Just sad.
We are not at war with Islam. We cannot profile Muslims.
But, the vets, we'll their all crazie, right?
Disgusting b**ch won't even back down when confronted on it. Wonder how many votes from vets and soldiers BO plans to get next election. First, he tries to gut their healthcare, now he brands them all nuts.
Shameful.
Because they're pretty, is my guess.
But I sympathize. Shouldn't we distrust those who are skilled at pretending to be someone they're not?
Poland, who would have guessed.
I almost slipped into talking about how Nena was the greatest Austrian band ever with their smash hit,"Wind of Change" back when they were fronted by Falco, but then decided not to. Well until now…
Obamastapo.
Now that, my friend, is obscurity defined, and I like a good obscurity.
Sounds like an over cooked pasta dish covered in weak sauce. Hey we may have a winner!
Thank you, thank you very much.
I'm all about the obscure.
They've been exposing themselves for years. But at least until recently, it was only in alleys and adult theaters, and was kept local, opening them only to a "mentally disordered sex offender" label.
Nope, it's Australia. You know, the country that Schwarzenegger came from.
The Elizabethans had it right. Speech-readers and actors were one step above burglars and one step below common pickpockets.
1GooD, the best I could do during my divorce was to secure a "shared parenting" plan. The system is so very heavily stacked against fathers,as to be almost inhumane in separating loving fathers from their kids. I know this is a fight you feel you must make. And I applaud you, cheer you on, and will pray for your success. Keep every document. In the coming years you'll be able to show your kids how much you love them by the documents showing how hard you fought for them. Godspeed.
Dear Confused: I regret to inform you that you are now on the Attorney General's list of "possible subversives." One more post and they will remove "possible."
I think the Romans had it right as well.
LOL Greg, actually you have a good point, the hollywood actor community chosen to "portray" vets and the "winter soldier" phonies, many of whom had been in jail or the brig, probably should be watched and are her "image" of us. We need a PFA (protection of abuse) on jackboot Janet and her Weatherman thugs so that we can prevent them from getting ahold of lethal weapons. The Manson croud, and John Wilkes Booth croud were all from the hollywood of their day, not the vet croud, and the weathermen were all from the university croud – Janets people.
YOU ALL ON DA LIST. Auystrian is a language, the messiahs teachings are fulfilled always and your sinfulness must be badded by Jackboot Janets Inquisitors. LOL comments though, however, keep in mind the leftys went to our universities and may really not know stuff like real languages.
Thanks for that old friend.
The good news is that about 18 months ago I WON 85% custody of my little boys. Even with all of the "Crazed Viet Nam Vet” ranting from lawyers and the ex. (But, I’m still having to defend myself at least every other month). She gets them 2 weekends a month, I have them all the rest of the time.
I kept myself focused on the facts, the law and holding on to, and explaining, my conservative principals to the courts. (Plus, I fired my last lawyer in Nov. 2006 and took on the case by myself. That’s when I started to win.)
My point was, that being in the American military, especially combat troops, are looked down on as “baby killers” then, and “terrorists” now, by the very people that are in “charge” of one’s right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.
Sad, what we as a nation are becoming.
But, I vow I’ll do what I can to stop it. Just like I stopped my sons from being ripped away from my life.
Not Over.
That is just fantasic re: 85% custody. It is a shame that anything more than your credentials as a Dad mattered to the court. But you fought and won and that's what matters. Congrats again, and good luck, this single-parent gig is beaucoups rewarding, but tough.
To paraphrase a line from Willie Nelson, "my heroes have always been soldiers, and they still are today". My Dad & his 3 brothers were all vets, WWII & Korea. Until I learned what a football was good for (getting to hit other people) my boyhood game was "army". And I was always glued to the news each night to watch my real life heroes in Vietnam. At some point all the networks started rolling lists of names of the wounded and killed on the Friday newscasts. it was a somber moment every week for a little boy. My point is the people who throw "baby killer" and "terrorist" and look down on the uniform and those who wear it, they only have the loudest voices. My Dad always says, "Empty barrels make the most noise". They'll not be in charge forever, probably less than they think. And there'll always be more people like me who understand the sacrifice of others and are most grateful for it.
amen brother.
Islamic terrorism or the polices of our own gov?
He's not worried about the votes. Most Soldiers vote absentee and therefore are easy to disenfranchise. Just look at the election in NY. They sent the absentee ballots out too late for the postal system to return them from overseas. Just a bureaucratic oops and the military vote becomes irrelevant.
This is a woman who failed so completely to understand the illegal-immigration problem that her first step after getting kicked upstairs into DHS was to try and bring Pressure From Above to bear on her old state's most dedicated supporter of immigration law.
Don't worry. It just gives the "perfect" in your handle a sense of irony.
You're all wrong. Cuz as I've said before, I have it on good authority (my imagination) that the Department of Homeland Security will soon be renamed to the Ministry of Motherland Operations, and we'll be controlled by Mini-Mom.
I think they're exposing themselves because exposing themselves is what liberals do….
I live in Arizona and was surprised she wasn't picked as Obama's VP Candidate. Ms. Napolitano has some very strong positions, but most of her time is spent doing whatever is necessary to stay in power. She will subvert legal processes to obtain what she wants when she can, and will posture and demand when she can't. This report doesn't surprise me, nor does her response ("Well, there are some things in it I don't agree with….."). She is a very dangerous lady.
Congrats on your victory in your custody battle. I gotta tell you though, I can't help but think that your ex's counsel as well as the judge needed a good tuning-up. Even in San Francisco and Los Angeles courts I got that anti-vet crap quashed real quick. I mostly represented men in divorces, but those women I represented who wanted to use that tactic got a quick "get another lawyer" from me.
But your lawyer (or you personally) must have worked hard, so consider 85% custody (I assume you're talking about physical custody, with joint legal custody) a win. I once told a judge that even under current "gender-neutral" statutes, the advantage was always to the woman, and he was essentially saying that unless I could prove the mother was going to eat the kids during a feeding frenzy, she was going to get the kids. Sometimes the best tactic is to attack the judge, and many lawyers simply aren't willing to do that.
You know, when you register you get the shiny Edit function included at no extra cost. And you can still work in that link to your site. BTW, why are you posting here with such a completely different name?
I missed the fine print but read here that Barry wants to have a civilian army as large as the military one. First glance I wondered if that was a "militia" end-run around the 2nd Amendment but Chuckie and friends wouldn't approve.
Okay, found details on the GIVE and SHARE acts.
Man that's scary. I can see these brown shirts going around looking for signs of "community distress" like NRA hats and pro-life bumper stickers. God help anyone flying the black POW-MIA flag, that's an automatic joint BATFE-FBI "fact finding visit."
Don't know about the secret police, or how "secret" Barry would bother to be, but he's got a good start on the network of paid informers to identify dissenters. And jail time is looking preferable to "community service" for avoiding indoctrination.
Oh come on! You were lucky to get one reply with that phrase, stop milking the strap-on.
It's an understandable mistake, Schwarzenegger is from Austria, does not like being identified as German, and doesn't speak English.
"milking the strap-on?" I didn't know that was possible! I guess I DO need to watch the Rachel Maddow show, after all. She and Jane Hamsher can explain it to us rubes in flyover land. Cos they're so cool and hip and everything.
Custody is never fair. I was made to let my ex see my kids, when he was a known abuser, and stalker. So everytime I had to meet him with the kids, he would try to follow me, or else get info about me (where I was living, working, etc), from our kids, in order to find me. I don't think mothers should ever automatically get the kids, nor should it always be the parent, (if both work), who makes the most money. Kids never seem to get enough say so in these matters, either. They asked my kids what did they want, in front of the ex! Of whom they were terrified of! Great plan, there. Good luck, GoodDad!

Obama.. Such a funny guy…like ha ha funny?
The real danger is in the White House not in the Military for sure.
The circus continues, I hear Castro says Obama gives him a warm tingly feeling that run down his leg.. or maybe it was tha just his colostomy bag is leaking?
attended a tea rally in oceanside.
my favorite sign (which had nothing to do with taxes) said
you can stand behind our soldiers
or stand in front of our soldiers
You know what's funny? They've never really presented any evidence to a right wing conspiracy but this kind of proves that there is a Left Wing Conspiracy. Unbelievable!
I think he was making fun of Obama because he's the one who said he didn't know how to say it in "Astrian" in Austria where they speak German.
Janet Napolitano, Janet Reno. Maybe history does repeat itself. Does Obama have any interns named Monica, or Monique maybe?
You're just not reading the wrong catalogs. Some joker at work left an Adam and Eve in the john for reading material, that was an eye opener. Trash that it was, it disappeared. Eventually I threw it out.
Do you know the anecdote (perhaps untrue) about Douglas Bader, the legendary WW2 fighter pilot who shot down 22 despite having lost his legs in 1931?
Bader was asked to take part in a debate at a girls' school and at some point recounted one of the times when he was shot down over the Channel: "My engine was on fire, I had two of the f***ers on my tail, one f***er was coming up at me from the left and there were two more f***ers about a hundred feet above me" The headmistress panicked and interrupted. "Girls, as you all know, there was a German manufacturer of aeroplanes called Fokker." Bader: "I don´t know about that. All I can tell you is that these chaps were flying Messerschmitts."
Amen Brother! Chesty also had his artillery commander target the Army positions after they inquired about his plans for retreat….gotta love the stones on that man.
Did Falco also do "Rock Me Amadeus"? I remember listening to that song in college, blasted out of my mind at various parties
