To Arms!!!
by Gary GrahamA week ago, a horrendous crime took place in a nursing home in Carthage, North Carolina. Seven innocent lives were taken by an unhinged dirtbag apparently upset at his ex-wife. Fortunately, a brave police officer answered the call, engaged the perpetrator in a gun fight, and though he took three rounds to the legs, managed to deliver a center-mass hit onto said dirtbag, dropping him in his tracks. This courageous officer kept his head, and, with bullets pounding around and into him, kept his muzzle on target long enough to bring to an end a tragedy that may have been a whole lot worse.
A few days ago, an even more egregious travesty upon the innocent occurred in upstate New York. A disgruntled man blocked off the exit to a community service building with his car, then went around front and entered the building firing a high-powered rifle. Before the rampage was done, fourteen souls were gone, including the shooter’s.
Predictably, there surfaced immediately the usual suspects who painted this tragedy as further evidence that more comprehensive and restrictive gun laws are needed, now more than ever.
In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.
But first let me say that my heart breaks for the families of those killed and wounded in this past week’s slayings. They were done in both cases by deranged men, intent upon murdering innocent and unarmed people. You will notice that in the most recent case, the scumbag killed himself quickly and painlessly before having to confront the consequences of his evil actions. (And those of us who believe in the afterlife know of what consequences await him.) The shooter at the convalescent home took on a policeman and one shot dropped him. What’s my point? Almost all of these killers are cowards. They arm themselves to the teeth and go up against an unarmed enemy no more formidable than a cornered herd of sheep.
How very brave of them.
The Main Stream Media is busy screeching two questions: 1) Where did the shooter get the weapons? and 2) What was his motive?
I’m sorry… but who gives a sh*t?? Anyone can get a gun anywhere in the world, regardless of the prevailing gun laws. As for motive…hey, I don’t care whether he was frustrated about his unemployment, or the fact that he couldn’t speak English, or his favorite for American Idol got voted off. What difference does any of that make when a deranged asshole decides to go postal? Is society now to walk on eggs, even more tolerant and deferential than we already are; constantly scared to death that we might inadvertently say or do something that may offend a tender sensibility and trigger a violent orgy of mass murder? Hey…not in my movie.
A day after the horrendous mass-shooting in Binghamton, a deranged scum-dog kill-‘em-there A-hole gunned down three Pittsburgh Police Officers. His picture (along with assorted tattoos) was immediately thrown onto the media screens, quoting his words that, “Crazy to me is going through the motions … Crazy to me is letting each day slip past you. Crazy is being insignificant. Crazy is being obscure, pointless.”
My plea to ALL media: Stop putting their faces on the news! These scumbags who are virtually screaming, “Hey world look at me! I killed a bunch of people! Now I matter! I’m a star!!” (Yeah, pal – nice career move.) You, in the media, are giving these coward miscreants exactly what they want – to be media stars for 15 minutes. They couldn’t get enough attention to suit their self-possessed, meaningless existence, so they went for the easy way into infamy – they locked and loaded and snuffed out a bunch of innocent lives. ”But it’s our job to report the news,” you say in your lame attempt to insulate yourselves from complicity; but you in the media are accomplices in this sad, sick media mobius. Report the news and refuse to put their pictures up! Refuse to give them what they want — media exposure. Don’t let them ‘go out in a blaze of glory’. Do not yield to the impulse to pick the low hanging fruit; let the other jerks do that. Be better than the rest. Your coverage encourages other would-be psycho killers. Surely you can see this. Surely there must be some moral integrity left somewhere in the media. How about exercising just a modicum of social responsibility for a change?
But I digress.
It is a grievous sadness that anyone had to die at the hands of these demented homicidal losers. Dialing 911 is of course a good thing when the sh*t goes down – but the police are a dispatch call away. The responder in last week’s case in Binghamton, N.Y. was there very quickly, less than five minutes, I understand. But generally it takes an overworked police force longer to arrive on the scene – at least it does in my neighborhood. But even at five minutes…a lot can happen within that time. And in New York, by the time the several SWAT teams arrived, the damage was done, fourteen people were already dead.
Beyond the inevitable, yet ultimately meaningless, questions of why he did it, there’s a much more important question we should be asking ourselves: What if one or more of those innocent civilians had been packing, and was trained, and drew his or her gun…and shot back?
Things may have turned out very differently.
What is needed, now more than ever, is for Americans to pull their heads out of their tails and become proficient with firearms. And then, having gained competency with their safe usage, arm themselves. And then, having armed themselves, be prepared to deploy those arms in the responsible defense of innocent life.
Guns stop crime.
Sorry for the whiplash all you Lefties just got doing the double-take on that last line. (Call your chiropractor for an adjustment, it’ll be all right.) But yes, guns stop crime. Now, of course, that’s an intentionally incomplete statement. Obviously, guns don’t stop crime in and of themselves, any more than guns cause crime. A gun is an inanimate object, a tool, incapable of doing anything on its own. And like any tool, it is the user that determines the outcome of its utility. Statistically, guns in this country are used more to stop crime than perpetrate crime almost thirty to one. An armed citizen can stop horrendous murders The so-called “gun-free zones” are a joke. Who pays attention to those zones? Law abiding citizens. Your friends, peace-loving people. Who ignores them? The bad guys. And also…smart people, who risk imprisonment and persecution to protect their loved ones against the bad guys who might want to harm innocent life.
An armed, trained citizen can make a difference.
I’ve never worked for the police force, nor have I ever been in the military service. But I’m around guns and gun owners a lot. Aside from having had extensive tactical firearms training over the years (professionally and for fun), I also do competitive shooting events all over the country. And I admit that when I first started, it was a daunting moment when I realized that I was surrounded by a large group of people, each of whom had a gun on his person. But what I came to realize is this: There is not a safer place to be, than surrounded by a bunch of responsible, armed gun owners. I’m not sure of the origin of the saying (but I heard it first from a gentleman named Massad Ayoob in his book In the Gravest Extreme): “An armed society is a polite society.”
Now… I understand this is anathema to many on the Left…and probably some on the Right. Fantasies of ‘the Wild, Wild West‘ roam through their minds; people brandishing guns at the least provocation, shootouts in the streets, neighbors drawing down on each other if one refuses to turn down the music or take in their trash cans. And sure, there are exceptions to every rule…parts of the Middle East come to mind…
But in civilized society, this saying largely holds true. An armed society is a polite society. There is something that comes over a person once they, A) have been highly trained in one or more of the firearms skills, and B) are armed with a gun. One’s countenance steadies. Your very carriage changes. You become a model citizen; because along with the actual physical training of gun handling and manipulation, safety awareness, loading, malfunction clearance, and general marksmanship…comes education. Legal, civil, ethical…and moral.
More specifically, you learn the hypothetical ramifications of getting into a real gun fight. You learn what is likely to happen should you elect to produce your weapon in defense of innocent life; and also what the police response is likely to be, step-by-step, from the moment the initial 911 call goes out, to you either being turned loose…booked for a crime… or worse. (the ‘or worse’ would be waving a gun about as amped-up officers arrive on scene, draw down on you, misinterpret that you’re the good guy – and shoot you my mistake. It’s been known to happen.) You learn how you are likely to be handled, possibly ordered or thrown to the ground and cuffed. You find out what the questioning process is, how the investigation is handled and what your likelihood of going to jail…or being released.
And beyond the legal problems — you may be sued, either by the wounded bad guy himself, or by the family of the dead bad guy. You learn that you are talking a minimum of $50,000 in legal fees just to defend yourself. You may lose your job. You may lose your house. You may lose your standing in your community, the respect of your friends, and you may have to move out of the area. And that’s if you were completely justified by law in the shooting.
But beyond the legality of the shooting…and the civil action that may or may not be taken against you…is the moral issue. There are psychological issues. How would it make you feel to hurt someone, even kill them…though you were completely legally justified using your weapon. How does it square with your ethics or religious beliefs? Is your marriage affected adversely? Do your children look at you differently, having to defend your actions at school? What does that feel like?
Your reaction may surprise you. I have known people who have produced their weapon in defense, have been involved in a gunfight; and I know people who have had to take a life. In each instance a common reaction held true: First, there was an immediate elation and relief at having survived a potentially lethal situation. This was quickly followed by anger and deep regret at having been forced into the fight. Then, came an unmistakable sadness and devastation. I’m not talking about the steeling of the heart necessary for the combat veteran; I’m talking about a typical law-abiding citizen who finds himself in the unenviable position of having used his weapon in lethal defense. The use of deadly force has lasting impact and permanence of consequence. It’s no small deal.
A trained, armed citizen learns the legal, civil and moral ramifications of being involved in a gun fight to such elaborate and excruciating extent, that I guarantee you: the very last thing you ever want to do is get into a gun fight.
But what if we citizens were armed? What if we took the Second Amendment to heart, not only as our Constitutionally-guaranteed right…but our responsibility? What if the two cowardly mass-murderers in North Carolina and New York couldn’t be sure they would be confronting unarmed citizens? Maybe they wouldn’t have entered the buildings in the first place?
Maybe…maybe not.
But one thing is irrefutable: In every state where law-abiding citizens are allowed to carry guns, violent crime drops to almost zero. And everywhere people are prohibited from owning or carrying guns…burglary, armed assault, and home invasion crime sky-rockets.
Criminals in prison testify that the number one deterrent to them committing violent crime upon a citizen…is the fear that their possible mark might be armed with a gun. It naturally follows that the biggest fans of gun control…are the criminals. They love when their targets are disarmed by gun laws. Because only law-abiding citizens pay attention to them! Criminals certainly don’t.
But if I enact my right in Los Angeles to keep and bear arms…and carry a concealed hand gun…and am deemed a criminal for it…and in deploying my weapon to avert a much more grievous offense against the innocent (a rape or robbery, or murder)… am I a criminal?
Yes…and no. The Law of Competing Harms, as I understand it, says that you are not guilty of a crime, if in the act of breaking the law, you avert a more heinous crime from being committed.
So I ask myself…what’s it going to be? In the face of a possible tragedy such as these horrendous shootings, do we just ‘think a good thought’ and hope it all goes away? Do we trust that maybe a cop will get there in time when it all goes down and only seven people will be killed?
Or do we step up and declare ourselves to be Defenders. The American citizen as Citizen Soldier. Trained and armed. A model citizen – responsible, professional, respectful. And if some scum-sucking lowlife shows up at a McDonald’s or a Denny’s where you’re sitting with your wife and kids, and he pulls out an AK-47 thinking this is the day he’s gonna ice some people and get ‘pay back’ for some imagined grievance… Well there’s a good chance you could completely ruin his afternoon.
“But what about Los Angeles? New York City? You can’t legally carry concealed in these cities.” – Joe Lefty
And your irrelevant point is..?
Am I advocating breaking the law? Yes. I’m advocating civil disobedience. In support of the Law of Moral Common Sense. I’m not a vigilante. But I am prepared to risk criminal prosecution in order to defend innocent life. Concealed-carry permits are almost all but impossible to get in Los Angeles currently, even to a model citizen who is also highly trained in the use of firearms like myself. So do I have a concealed carry permit? Yeah – it’s called the 2nd Amendment.
“The competent deployment of a gun, on scales both personal and national, is the guarantor of our freedom.” – Gary Graham
Now we hear from the Obama Administration that the problem is there are too many guns out there. In a prevailing cultural mindset that wants to avoid accountability, shirk responsibility and just be taken care of…my question to you, dear reader is… How long are we going to buy into what the Left tells us is the mandate of the Obamanation: That we must sit back, let the brilliant Obamaheads figure it all out, and simply take care of us? They will take over and run our formerly free markets, banks, and corporations. They will monitor and censor our airwaves, creating what they call ‘fairness’, thereby protecting us from the ubiquitous ‘hate speech’ of the Right. They will take over the medical community and deliver to us ‘free’ health care that will resemble a wasted and decimated shell of its former magnificence. And then they will compel us to build autos we don’t want to buy, and use energy we don’t want to use, and do things we don’t want to do…all for our own good — if we were only smart enough to realize it.
And, oh yeah, almost forgot. They will want to take away our guns.
As a great man once said, “…From my cold, dead fingers.” (– C. Heston)
Well FTS! We don’t want to be ‘taken care of’. We want to be left alone. I say we keep our guns. We keep our liberty. We keep our country.

AMEN! My 12 gauge and .357 stand ready to defend my wife and two children. As a husband and father, ti's my duty to protect them.
Good job. Gary. I totally agree. I'm with you. In my latest film, I show a world where there are no guns, fighting the bad guys is hilarious (it is a comedy, of course).
Ok Gary how is this one: We all know who Marcus Lutrell is right? The Navy SEAL who was basically the last man standing in the book, Lone Survivor. Anyway some dirt bags, out joy riding shot his dog a few nights back and after chasing these idiots, Luttrell was restrained enough not to take all of them out. He held them in place till the sheriff could show up and then these little bottom dwellers had the guts to threaten Lutrell. And he could have. Dasy a cute yellow labrador, was given to him as a puppy to help him recover from his wounds . She was more than a pet, she was what the doctor ordered. They didn't just shoot a dog. Its far more than that. Anyone want to argue with me needs to go to see the way dogs help people who have come back from Iraq and Afghanistan with wounds. These animals are literally the things that help restore a man's sense of purpose and meaning.
We need to be there for each other. We need to be good neighbors again. I advocate an end to all reality shows. I advocate an end to political correctness that instead of bringing people together, cubby holes them in shelves, seperated and unable to relate. We need to be there enforce for our veterans, and their families. I want Marcus and others like him to know, guys you aren't alone. We won't let that happen. There is nothing wrong with neighbors being neighbors.
You cannot disarm the criminal. You can only arm the citizenship.
Guns – the compassionate alternative. I'm with you Gary.
I will NEVER be disarmed, ever, period!
I'm with you, Lola. Neighbor helping neighbor. Wow…and without the governement! How's that work, lol?
And I'd like to spend some quality, up-close-and-personal time with the a-holes who shot Marcus' dog. They'd have to use dental records to identify them.
Excellent column.
Just look at Kenisaw GA, there gun ownership is mandatory and crime is zero.
Keep up the great work Gary!!!
Well said….
I am a grandmother, a widow, and Army vet and fully armed. Illegally I have to add. My state will not allow me a CCP. Two years ago I recognized I have a problem and checked myself into rehab. I am an alcoholic. BUT this state says I am too risky. I've eight more years to wait till I am sane again by their standards. No matter….if you see me, I am packing. I will take my chances with any jury in this county. I am prepared to defend me and mine and I say the Second gives me that right regardless of current law. I am not a kook, I have 2 granddaughters and will do whatever is necessary to keep them safe. Thank God for an armed and informed citizenry. And thank you Gary for a well presented counter to the current crop of elitists.
Gary, I am sooo glad you came out of the “conservative closet” in Hollyweird a few months ago, to deliver your brand of commonsensical wisdom on these pages.
I have always been a law abiding member of our society, never been arrested or committed a crime for anything in my 59 years, (damn, even my DOG had a license).
But, for the last 20 years or so, here in the “Peoples RepubliK of Kalifornia”, I have been forced to “break the law” by carrying my legally purchased Beretta .25 9 shot, (my little “pocket rocket”, fits in the palm of your hand), with me almost every time I step out of the house.
It helps me feel a little more secure, and in all that time I’ve never had to take it out and use it. I hope and pray I never do. But, I will if necessary, and after I survive yet another skirmish, I’ll be free to go home and have a ham and cheese sandwich with spicy brown mustard (Yum.), because I won’t give a flying monkey about the dirtbag(s) I dropped to protect myself and family.
Not Over.
What the gun-ban crowd is trying to do is punish people for what they MIGHT do. I have never once harmed anyone with any of my firearms. They are all legal and safely stored. I have never once broken a law with any of my firearms. But their argument is that I MIGHT do something…..
If we follow that path no one would be allowed to drive because they MIGHT drive drunk….
It's ridiculous and it doesn't work. Just read anything from John Lott.
Totalitarian governments fear citizen ownership of guns more that criminals with guns. Criminals never start revolutions. Revolutions are started by ordinary citizens who feel overwhelmed by oppressive governments. A disarmed citizenry is a compliant herd of sheep.
Oh, that story just absolutely kills me. It's so horrible. Those … I can't even come up with a word for them because nothing fits … they deserve far worse than the law will deliver because they robbed him of far, far more than a pet.
Mr Graham, sir, your article is an inspiration. I have converted it to PDF and circulated it to everyone I know (because many people dislike clicking on links). I hope doing so is alright by you.
Gary, thanks for writing this and sharing with us!! You are so completely right!
Some states like my home of Florida passed a law that says you can't be sued for shooting a perp in self defense. We have waves of home invasions here and they keep doing it until the homeowner shoots them. Our sheriff LOVES it – he'll be on the news beaming that the second amendment works.
When I first started carrying, I was trained "shoot to kill – then the perp can't sue you." Now it's moot, but even though I might try to wound, I've been trained in center mass shots, so no promises if anyone makes the mistake of going after me or anyone with me.
And absolutely, it's in the "gun free" zones where you see these shootings, isn't it?
Who's with you?
Anyone who knows and respects the Constitution.
And the latter seem not to be in Washington, D.C.
Keep writing, Mr. Graham. Keep speaking out while it's still legal.
Oh yes, disarming the citizenry is the first step in any fascist or statist government.
It gives me a sickly feeling in the pit of my stomach….
Yes, certainly all those people who died in wars before the introduction of gunpowder thought it was hilarious.
Yeah all those "Gun Free Zone" signs do is point the scumbags in the right direction.
I live about 40 miles from Binghamton, NY the site of last friday's "Tribute to Gun Control." For their OWN SAFETY… the Police entered the building approx 3 HOURS after the last shots were Heard. However the Politicians could not get here FAST enough. Governor, Congressman, Senator were HERE IN FORCE. Luckily, the perp took himself out..I guess he didn't want to hear Maurice Hinchey (Comm – NY)Either.
At least the Perp saved the City, county and state the cost of the trial.
You only need to look at Chicago, a city that has had a handgun ban for years, and then look at their crime statistics for the number of murders with handguns.
Criminals do not shake in their boots at more gun laws. When they take out an elderly grandmother or 'cap' a group of kids on the playground, they do not worry about being charged with violating the gun ban. Even if you could have guns magically disappear when you cross the city limits, thugs will find other means of spreading terror in the neighborhoods (or should I use the term 'man-caused disaster' in place of terror?)
Well put and logically sound.
My neighbor has weapons, a car trunk full of them, and some at home. He's in law enforcement. I must confess I am a legal owner of weapons too. I would not recommend home invasion, burglary or any other shenanigans in my neighborhood. Now what would happen to crime rates if the bad guys knew they would risk their life to even try something? Now go look at Chicago. Handguns are outlawed in the city and every time there is another child shot, (mostly gang related) the local liberal idiots scream for more gun control. What is the next step after "illegal"? And don't you think the criminals cheer every time more gun control is called for? Disarmed citizens have another name. The criminals call them "safe targets".
Never Disarming for anyone.
Me and my 8mm Mauser and my 12 gauge Ithaca are with you Gary!
If they want to take my guns, they are in for a rude awakening, I'm a good shot.
I have had a lot of people ask me the same question, "Why do you always have a hand gun with you whenever I see you?". I always respond, because I can, in KY you are allowed to legally carry weapons openly and so I did. Everyone knows I had the hand gun and if they had a problem with it, which no one ever did, I would have left and removed the problem. But I also had a number of my friends say they felt safer with me around since they knew I was armed when we were out in bad areas or driving unknown roads to events. Now I also have my CCDW permit and it another right I plan on hanging onto no matter what the Ferderal Government says.
Great column Gary. It's a tragedy that these nutjobs exist within our species, but they do. The attack on guns is entirely misplaced for the reasons you mention. If someone at the scene had been armed, these killing sprees may have been shortened or even prevented.
But the sad truth, the one the left won't admit because they're busy exploiting these tragedies to attack guns, is that when a nut decides to kill people, they will find a way — with or without guns. Indeed, the two biggest mass murders on American soil — 9/11 and Oklahoma City took place without guns.
Too bad all of us don't have common sense laws like those in Texas and Florida.
George Washinton said, "The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere & everywhere restrains evil interference ~ they deserve a place of honor with all that's good."
Every citizen that cares about their liberty needs to be vigilant in keeping up with state and federal legislation. I know that PA currently has one of the 'encoded ammunition' laws being considered. It is feared that the Pittsburgh shooting will help push this thing through (HB 2228). What is silly is that encoding ammo has nothing to do with the shooting. It would not have prevented it. Be on guard. Our rights, those we still have left, will all be taken from us forever if we allow ourselves to be unarmed.
George Washington also said, "Firearms are only second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the people's liberty's teeth."
"Never waste a crisis". That is the credo of the Obama administration. Every incident is an opportunity to exert control, impose taxation, whip public fear into a panic in order to justify their agenda. The clamor and din for gun control will surely follow. They want to disarm the populace and will do anything to get there.
Okay smart guy,
Why don't these nutcases go shoot up a police station?
I'm with you! (Absolutely NO sarcasm intended, BTW.)
I acquired a concealed carry permit several years back. After taking the requisite courses for the concealed carry permit, I decided to join my children in TaeKwonDo as well. I wanted to make sure that I had other availble options and wouldn't unnecessarily escalate a moderate confrontation to a full-fledged fire-fight.
Sig P220
Keep telling it like it is, Gary!
I saw an interesting show from John Stossel once where he went to a prison and talked to 8 convicted murderers that used guns.
He asked if they went through a background check or waiting period for their guns.
They laughed and said they weren't obeying any laws to begin with, so why should they go through legal channels.
He asked if they would have entered the homes where they committed their crimes if they knew the owner of the home was armed.
To a man, they said they would find a different house.
I'm not ever giving up my guns because 8 out of 8 criminals when asked will avoid my house for fear of getting their heads blown off.
we Chicagoans know about the insanity of the gun debate; thousands of gang members are armed but no, we can't infringe on their first amendment right to associate freely on corners of known drug hangouts… no, can't have that. No, instead the city concentrates on harassing private citizens and making example of 'arsenals' (two bricks of .22 rimfire has constituted an arsenal claim). Only D.C. is worse but they are turning back the tide thanks to the Supreme Court decision.
Like global warming fans we can say 'the debate is over'… individual ownership of waepons for self defense
is the Law of the Land.
I admire you for having the courage to call for resistance, even when it is a call to violate the law.
Many more citizens might be needing that courage, and the courage to actually DO it, in the not too distant future.
I shot an 8mm Mauser, and man was it painful!!
I pity the fool that kicks in YOUR door brother……

My point was that laws are only obeyed by the law-abiding. Any more restrictive gun laws or outright bans will only effect people that obey the law.
And these are the people that need to protect themselves.
Indeed it's the 2nd Amendment that enables all the others…..
I would agree with you there. Beck had this psychologist on TV yesterday who tried to understand these hooligans. Now Wordsworth said the child is the father of the man. If so, then no matter what these kids grew up with, they are responsible for their behavior. Society is not. To be an adult you have to take responsibility for all of stuff you do. Apparently psychology says otherwise. If you kill a dog or a man its your parents fault? Excuse me? FTS! No right minded person I know believes that. How can a man be a man without being responsible? Can any leftist explain that me without sounding, stupid?
As I posted to the statist troll:
How come these nutcases don't shoot up the police station? Or the gun stores?
(This is a rhetorical question for you statists and socialists; we know that the nutcase would be resisted energetically by the gendarmes and the shop folks). SO:
If EVERYONE is armed, and would resist energetically any nutcase, why do we not have everyone armed?
ANS: Statist libs, because if you're dependent, you need them for everything, even crappy so-called protection. This isn't a slam against cops, who do miracles everywhere, like in Carthage. But a lot can happen before they get there, again, like in Carthage. If you could protect yourself, and your family, and your neighborhood, and your state, and even your country, what the hell would you need them for? What use is a statist if he can't chain you up in efforts to "take care of you"?
He will only feel it for a second. : D
What's bad.. is back when I was living in the "Dumb" south.. I Never had the desire or interest to carry a firearm… you didn't hear story after story about someone getting shot in a shootout… (Of course, this was an area when you weren't afraid to 'not' lock your doors (even in the 2000's))… now for the past few months (and along with some stories from my coworkers and fellow office tenants), I've been seriously considering doing the official gun-safety/training/conceal&Carry routine {which I THINK is valid in Missouri/st. louis}… It's amazing what a change of location will do to your train of thought.
What's bad.. is back when I was living in the "Dumb" south.. I Never had the desire or interest to carry a firearm… you didn't hear story after story about someone getting shot in a shootout…and you trusted most everyone around you.. (Of course, this was an area when you weren't afraid to 'not' lock your doors (even in the 2000's))… now for the past few months (and along with some stories from my coworkers and fellow office tenants), I've been seriously considering doing the official gun-safety/training/conceal&Carry routine {which I THINK is valid in Missouri/st. louis}… It's amazing what a change of location will do to your train of thought.
I agree. If somebody killed me dog, the law would be the least of their worries.
Goo Dad, you represent over 98% of gun owners in this country. Im preaching to the choir but, it's the nutjob (duh) that is presented as the norm by the MainSlimeMedia. Keep strong.
I agree. If somebody killed my dog, the law would be the least of their worries.
My Father was in the NRA and took me to the shooting range and hunting many times when I was a kid. I plan to join myself now that I am an adult and own a firearm responsibly. It's my RIGHT.
Everyone run! He has a board with a nail in it!
Good-o, Big Daddy! Sound, common sense. Tae KwonDo is an excellent discipline. Training concurrently with the kids will pay off big time…
Yeah…..Chicago is a mess. Born and raised there and I have no desire to return. Visit the parents out in Mt. Prospect and then I "beat feet" for the Lake of Egypt homestead as fast as the CamoJeep will carry me!!
I thought the .303 was a puss round years ago. Finally fired an Enfield Jungle Carbine…….WRONG! No wonder it ouftitted Spits and Hurricanes in WW II.
Powerful article, Gary! When I was a kid during hunting season I would take my gun to school. For convenience I would check it in with the principle who was a hunter himself. Gun crime, rape, robbery, etc. was almost none existent in these small towns throughout America because criminals knew they would get their a$$ blown off. These mass killings always take place where people are defenseless, “Gun Free Zones,” are dumb!
There is a very miniscule morsel of truth that if a gun was not available, a tiny minority of these types would be too cowardly to commit these acts. I will give the libs that. However, the simple fact is legal gun ownership and especially, concealed carry, reduces violence. Sometimes decidedly so. True, many times, an armed citizen very well could have stopped incidents like that.
Revolution aside, gun control also creates more bureaucracy … which further empowers government.
and keeps the libtards in Congress in line. They do seriously fear the armed populace. They will not admit it, of course. To rearrange the Constitution to their liking, they have to get rid of #2. Good comment…..
When asked "Why do you carry a gun" my new favorite pithy response is "because its a lot lighter than a cop"
Dude, I lol'd when I saw people getting arrows up the butt in Braveheart. Who didn't?
As officers of the court, we must never allow our passions to overwhelm our duty to the law. That's why that pile of dog poop that ended up on my neighbor's front doorstep after it started out on my lawn had absolutely nothing to do with me. I tried to set in on fire, too. Wait—I mean the person who put it there tried to set it on fire.
I'm with you, Andrew. Mess with me and mine, and you'll need more than a lawyer to fix your mess.
Likewise, I was exposed to firearms at about age 7. Job #1 was safety and responsibility. They go hand in hand. NRA is perhaps the most responsible lobby there is. I gained an enormous amount of respect for Charlton Heston, due to the NRA. He should be the poster child that liberals can emulate. Nah…..I ask too much…… Memo to 98ZJ : Quit restating the obvious. Signed, 98ZJ
*groan* …….. Stan, I remember those days,…… well, the end of them anyways. Had Rifle Club at high school, burbs of Chicago, no less. Always had a rifle in the trunk. I think about that now and wonder where they went and how kids today would be more responsible, if they were exposed to that.
When I was young (back when the buffalo were plentiful), I took a rifle shooting course during my time in Indian Guides. I think I was eight or nine years old at the time.
Early in the course, one of the instructors had us line up so we all had a good view of what was to follow. He pointed out a gallon jug that had been filled with water dyed red. He lifted his rifle, aimed, and shot the jug. He then handed the rife to a fellow instructor, fetched the jug, and showed it to all of us would-be marksmen. There were two nice big holes with red stuff dripping out.
"This could be someone's head," he told us. "NEVER point your rifle at ANYONE."
It got the point across.
I remember the idiots passing oppressive gun laws in 68. I promptly ignored them just like I do today. Like the author I believe that the second amendment means exactly what it says and the government has no right to stop me from possessing firearms that I think are adequate to defend myself. In my case I choose an AK Bullpup with 30 round clips loaded with hollow points. That is just in case my 12 gauge riot gun full of buckshot runs out. The 45 pistol is just in case I am really pressed for time. I routinely travel to DC. Mass., and New York. Evidently hoodlums in New York State run to packs of cowards and are not used to citizens poking a gun in their nose when they try to bust in to a slow moving vehicle in traffic. It was funny as hell watching the losers haul butt trying to hold up those baggy pants. I guess my question to liberals is "Is it worth you life to try to deny me the right to protect my life or my loved ones?" Because that is putting it as plain as I can make it. God gave me life and America gave me the right to protect it.
As G. Gordon Liddy says, " I had rather be judged by twelve than carried by six."
Because of something my wife did years ago, I can not get a CCP. Doesn't matter, I carry anyway.
Kudos Gary for telling it like it is.
Regarding gun ownership: Its better to die on your feet than live on your knees
Shouldn't every politician calling for disarmament of citizens first disarm themselves and their body guards ?
Feinstein and Obama … ?
You go, girl. God bless you. Congratulations on your sobriety, and more…your common sense.
Vincent — Feel free, please, to circulate this to everyone you can. I appreciate it, sir.
depends where you hit him!!
I live in one of two states that do not allow any type of concealed carry. I currently have my Florida CCW permit and just finished the training for the Utah and Minnesota permits. I will have those soon. I have now carried concealed legally in about 10 states over the last couple of years, and haven't shot anybody, not one person, no one. If guns are the problem, I should have left a trail of carnage from Indiana to West Virginia to Tennessee to Florida. The governor of my state says, on record, that if we want to carry a gun, we should wear it on our hip, but the local police arrest us when we do so. We are not legally allowed to carry concealed, we are arrested when we carry openly, yet our state and federal constitutions guarantee a right to keep and bear arms. I keep a 12 gauge cased in my vehicle, legally, but without breaking the law or risking arrest, that is the best I can do for now.
Thank you brother! I have been a follower of Massad Ayoob for many years! I keep an extra copy of "In Gravest Extreme" around the house so I can give it to people who express an interest in Personal Self-Defense. When someone who asks "why?" I tell them,
"This book will help you prepare for the fight that will save your life and the criminal trial and the Lawsuit that will follow after you save your life".
I'm from the Binghamton area (Johnson City to be precise). I live half a block off Main street and heard the constant wail of sirens all Friday afternoon. I have no guns (unless you want to count my Red Ryder BB gun I use to chase stray cats out of my yard, it's my house, I can pee on it, they can't). And I have no desire at all to enact any more gun control.
If anti-gun nuts managed to amend the constitution to repeal the second amendment, that'd be fine by me too. But until then, keep your hands off the rights of We The People!
You're right about concealed weapons, but I don't think liberals are actually worried about stopping these nuts. It's probably true that a VERY small number of these nuts would be deterred if there were no guns. I don't dispute that. But how could anyone really argue for eliminating the rights of 300 million people to stop five people a year from abusing those rights? The answer is simply: they don't care about the violence, they hate guns and they are just exploiting these tragedies.
Indeed, some of these nuts could probably be deterred if we banned alcohol or violent movies, yet liberals don't propose that as a solution because they don't hate alcohol or violence in movies. They do hate guns. Guns, like the cars liberals also hate, equal individual freedom, and they don't want that.
Also, think about what would happen if we did ban guns. These nuts won't stop their attempts. They'll just change their methods. Instead of shooting five or six people, they'll blow up a building or crash an airplane or explode a car in a crowd. That would be much, much worse for society.
The whole dog poop thing, that's old school my friend!
I'll bet that the bodyguards to the "stars" carry concealed weapons – I'm pretty sure that Obama's Secret Service aren't just carrying slingshots. So, why should the average citizen be denied the same ability to defend themselves from harm on a daily basis? Oh, maybe the reason is that some animals are more equal than others ?
We have a .35 Remington that don't look like much, but boy do you feel it when you fire. Ouch!
School shootings were non existent.
See, there you go again calling me old. And I'm sure you know me well enough by to know that was only the opening shot. Not to mention it never actually happened, did it?
Hey Gary, haven't seen you in awhile…glad to find you on the web! Great article. "An armed society is a polite society" comes from Robert A. Heinlein's book(s) featuring Lazarus Long – "Time Enough for Love" is the first that comes to mind.
How's your rifle shooting coming along? Scott ("That would be Bad…") H.
I didn't call you old, I called you old school. . . a classic.
I was pretty sure it was only the opening round. . . not that it happened.
The only thing I might add is that I don't think they really hate the guns so much. They hate what an armed citizenry can do to them when they come to take away the other nine of the ten Rights contained in the Bill of Rights.
That's me all right. Kickin' it old school. And I'll gum anybody to death who disagrees with me. That's guM.
Oh, I get it. You are part of a leftist plot to infiltrate this site and attempt to kill us all by raising our blood pressure high enough to blow out out carotid arteries. We're on to you, dude.
I thought that was a particularly interesting graph. I'm just looking at it again, trying to figure out the reasons behind the individual ups and downs. Reassuring, though, that the general trend has been so obviously downward.
"An armed society is a polite society" is generally attributed to author Robert Heinlein, I believe. As for the artice, I don't leave my house without a pistol on my hip and often wear one at home. Home invasions are at an all time high.
Yikes. That's a pretty terrifying prospect.
Q. "How did he die?"
A. "Gummed down in a drive by." *shudder*
True. Just like cars, I don't think they worry one way or another about the object. They just don't like the freedom that those objects provide.
Paraphrasing P.J. O'Rourke, the difference between conservatives and liberals is the difference between "you shouldn't" and "you CAN'T" — and liberals are just as guilty as conservatives, if not more, of trying to give their "can't" the force of law.
I live just a few miles east of Omaha, Nebraska, and I used to work there.
When the Von Maar shooting at the West Roads Mall happened, it hit closer to home than it did to most (exception being those murdered, and their loved ones). One of those victims was a woman whom I had worked with some years ago. She was a clerk at Von Maar, and was working in a store located in a mall that is a 'Gun-Free' zone.
The young man who killed her didn't know her anymore than he knew any of those he shoot…..he was disturbed (to put it in the 'PC' terms the left can deal with), and had decided to make his mark by randomly shooting anyone he saw.
Yet the MSM failed to focus on why even the rent-a-guards weren't allowed to carry weapons, why the police WAITED to enter the building, even after their arrival within 6 minutes of the call (they didn't enter for almost 10 minutes), or why Omaha refused to issue CCW (since changed, yet only for locals, not out of state).
Per the anti-gun playbook, they decided to keep asking how he got the rifle and to blame those close to him for failing to 'address his needs'.
Not a word that a 'Gun-Free' Zone is impossible to enforce.
Not a word that a 'Gun-Free' Zone is labeled such to make the general public feel secure, without being secure.
Not a word that a 'Gun-Free' Zone really means that no-one but the criminals will have a gun in these zones.
Not a word that a 'Gun-Free' Zone is just a big red bulls-eye for ever wack-job who wants his name on TV.
This kind of insanity, perpetrated by the anti-gun crowd and supported by the MSM, endangers lives. Pure and simple.
I've had a CCW for several years, and carry even in a 'Gun-Free' Zone. I fully realize that when I do that, I am breaking an un-constitutional law, yet when asked why I would do such a thing, I can only refer to the Von Maar shooting and ask one question.
"If I or someone carrying, had been there that day…..would people be alive today that died instead?"
hey! how's my favorite devil-dog rifle instructor!!?? how you doing, Scotty! long time no see. Yeah, I'm doing great. Got involved with the 3-gun matches nationally… I'm not really a top contender, but I sure have a ball. you still out at FS? How are they doing? detsikes.com is email, write me there. – G
You know, London unilaterally banned guns. Now, they have the one of the highest violent crime rates involving knives. London used to be one of my favorite cities, not it just scares me.
It's a lingering, painful death.
sorry I meant to say *Now* it just scares me.
GM's problems are really related to their lack of good advertising these days. "It's not just your car, it's your freedom." It's still catchy, and I hum it all the time. Along with The Battle Hymn of the Republic, but I'm not sure which car company that came from.
I live near Cheshire CT, where 2 scumbags broke into a doctors home, beat him mercilessly, raped and killed his wife and 2 beautiful daughters while the police waited outside. If you want to protect your family from evil buy a gun, learn how to use it and store it safely. The police cannot protect you. I know I use to be one.
….and for those that are curious, my carry firearms are a Taurus PT 111 Pro (fits in a pants pocket and has little if any print), and a Para-Ordnance PXT 1911 LTC with a Crimson Trace laser grip (I find that after age 50, I need as much advantage as I can get).
9mm and .45 ACP respectively, using hollow points in both.
Just for all you geeks out there that like facts.
Guns are not the problem. If guns did not even exist, people like this would simply run in with a homemade bomb, machete, chain saw or a belt full of throwing knives. The difference is and always will be whether or not average people are equipped, enabled and encouraged to defend themselves. The most logical way to deal with criminals and those who have gone mad is to level the playing field, not to reduce the number or quality of deterants.
Germany's gun laws are supposed to be Europe's most restricted. Apparently, even that did not stop their latest shooter from killing as he wanted to.
So, sure, gun laws work, right? Ah, not really. Another liberal fantasy like nuclear disarm. and talking nice to despots.
Indeed, Right now the big thing in England is mass stabbings. No guns, no problem.
"The police cannot protect you. I know I use to be one."
Man, just what I needed to hear. (Even though I've always know it to be true).
Now I've really got the crap scared out of me.
Ammo up people.
Not Over.
