…In Which Ben Bernanke Explains It All To Us
by Gary GrahamHmmm. Is it just me that thinks this is sadly ironic? That we hear the President say on the news that he’s going to try to block the AIG bonuses for top executives, who are guilty of “recklessness and greed”…for the $165 Million they are contractually obliged to receive? After bailing AIG out to the tune of $180 Billion, (billion with a ‘B’) of taxpayer dollars??
Hey, I don’t care a wit about these AIG guys, and to hell with them. They screwed up their company but good, and I’m sure more than one shareholder would like to spend a few up-close-and-personal minutes in a closed room with them. And if job performance is to be the criteria for bonuses, it’s probably more equitable that, rather than receiving a bonus, they should be perp-walked off to prison; straight to the showers to sing the Song of Sodom. Put them between a jailhouse rock and a hard place. So to speak.
But that’s not what has me riled. I’m pissed off that the Prez is using this as an excuse to dodge responsibility and instead foment class warfare. “Yeah, ya see? The rich get rich and the poor get poorer. Ya see how they do ya? Let’s get even with ‘em! Tax the living snot out of them! That will help me! That will save the economy!”
President Obama has absolutely no problem sticking the taxpayers with $872 Billion in a ‘stimulus’ bill, (with more on the way)…but $165 Million gets handed out to some executives and he has a public hissy fit.
I feel like Scooby-Doo tilting his head when he hears Grandpa rip a loud one. Hmnh??
Am I the only one who feels like he’s got some charlatan trying to sell him a bag of shit?
“But it’s really, really good shit, Mr. Graham!”
“Oh…well then…if you’re sure it’s really really good…uh…”
FTS! And wait – did I not see the honorable Congressman from Massachusetts, Barney Frank decrying the bonuses on the news this morning? He, of all people, being the Chair of the House Financial Services Committee, and the primary engineer of the practice of forcing banks to make irresponsible loans to people who had poor credit rating and/or no collateral…the practice that helped sink the mortgage industry which got the economic avalanche started? Barney Frank is all puffed up with outrage??
Hmnh??
And while we’re on Strange Things In the Press That Keep Getting Stranger…did I or did I not hear on the news today, and please correct me if I’m wrong…Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Fed, and Newsweek’s rated 4th most powerful man in the world…say “”The biggest risk is that, you know, we don’t have the political will,” he said.”We don’t have the commitment to solve this problem, and that we let it just continue. In which case … we can’t count on recovery.”
Oh. Okay…so, as long as we have the ‘political will’ …and a “commitment to solve the problem”…then we’ll be fine.
So what the H-E-L-L does that mean?? By political will, he must mean government solution. Yes? Am I missing something there? Not a free enterprise system, doing what it does best, creating wealth, but government solutions. Regulations, committees, oversight, new laws…you know, government doing what it does best – meddling.
And all we need (aside from an apparently unending reliance on government to straighten out our lives) is a “commitment to solve the problem”.
Let me translate this, for I do speak fluent Lefty: RELAX. LET THE GOVERNMENT CONTROL YOUR LIVES, BECAUSE THEY CAN DO NO WRONG.
Mr. Bernanke went on to say in his 60 Minutes interview: “…the government needs to get banks to lend more freely and get the financial markets to work more normally.”
Wait just a doggone second. Now I know I’m being punked. Ashton, damnit, you got me, ya bastard, where’s the damn camera? Wait, no camera? He really said that? Hmnh??? Wasn’t government forcing banks and financial institutions to lend money more freely…wasn’t that what started the collapse of the housing market and mortgage industry in the first place?? So…once again, the financial geniuses of our time are recommending that the way out of economic instability and insolvency…is to go deeper into debt?
FTS! I say we get a bunch of fence rails…heat up some tar…get a few thousand goose-down pillows….and run these bastards out of town! In the manner they deserve!
Okay, maybe I’ve seen too many old westerns in my day. But damn! Sometimes these days I think that instead of watching the news, I’m accidentally receiving errant transmissions from some distant far-off galaxy…some alternate universe where up is down, good is bad, and nothing makes sense. I mean…surely this is not America in the year 2009!
Hmnh??

I can imagine that a Tea Party somewhere on Wilshire would go over like the proverbial turd in a punchbowl.

This is a dog & pony show for the stupid rubes. Obama and his braindead sycophants are parading their righteous indignation over $165 million in bonuses while these liberal degenerates are giving hamas $950 million, giving the Acorn agitators hundred of millions, giving unions hundreds of billions, spent $650 million on digital converters for analog tv’s so the poor can get their constant leftist propaganda from the alphabet channels, etc.
Bring on the impeachment proceedings. Never in American history have we had such an incompetent president and gaggle of liars and sellouts in congress. We’d be better of as a nation if the mob was running the nation; they at least are concerned about the well being of the country unlike our prostitutes in DC.
Sen. Dodd appears to have some culpability concerning the AIG bonuses.

Maybe by saying "lack the political will", Bernanke meant "lack the political will to stand up and say 'Hey the govt. screwed the pooch here and we've got to admit it, get out of the way, and help the market recover by lowering taxes on people and businesses so investment and expansion can take place. Regardless of the politcal cost in votes.' " Like Gov. Wm. J. LePetomaine once said, "We've got to protect our phoney-baloney jobs here!" Or have I mis-read Mr. Bernanke? To my girls: Did you have a good St. Patrick's Day?
"Let me translate this, for I do speak fluent Lefty: RELAX. LET THE GOVERNMENT CONTROL YOUR LIVES, BECAUSE THEY CAN DO NO WRONG."
Yes, just like they did here in Michigan. Things are all hunky Dorey up here and all.
Why would President Obama first sign the AIG bonuses (Dodd's amendment) into law, only to later demagogue them on their due date?

"Vic" over at AoS HQ offers this wisdom:
"[Dodd's amendment] language was put in the bill to insure that the bill remained nominally constitutional. If they had left a caveat in that tried to undo legal contracts that were made BEFORE the bill was passed it is likely the bill would have been challenged in court AND they would have lost."

I was going to note that Bernanke's comment about lending more "freely" did not mean what Mr. Graham thinks it did, but given that Gary probably couldn't tell a credit default swap from a wife swap, I figured I'd skip it. What I'm really dying to know is, just what episode of "Scooby-Doo" is that grandfather-farting scene from?
For the same reason he signed the "go ahead and use embryos for research" bill one day and "researching on embryos is illegal" the next. So whoever he talks to he can say, "I'm on your side."
These jerks have been brewing up this crap for decades. Washington politicians are having a wet dream, true euphoria. The whole AIG dust up is a diversion from the criminal policies of the “Barry.” This is all an attempt to save K-Street and Wall Street, you know, the smartest amongst us, the enlightened class, the Ivy League. The brain trust that gave CRA, Sub-prime Mortgages, 30 to 1 derivatives, Fannie-Freddie, TARP etc. Gary, your idea of a good old, tar and feathering would appropriate and satisfying.
today has been a six aspirin day…and it's only lunchtime.
Get used to it. This is the party and administration of unintended consequences. A trillion plus dollars will produce a torrent of situations like this where libs will be waxing indignantly every time their "progressive" programs and our dollars morph into a cacophony of corruption, spider webs of SNAFU's (some predictable some not) and don't at all accomplish the ends for which they were meant..
Faux outrage by co-conspirators is much more outrageous than ridiculous bonuses for abject failures. When Barney Fwank gets his secret desired fulfilled, jail time in a Fed prison, will we be on the road to mending this outrage. The clowns that wrote the rules made this possible, the should be held culpable. Fat chance, federal office is a free pass to graft and illegal behavior.
Mr. Bernanke went on to say in his 60 Minutes interview: “…the government needs to get banks to lend more freely and get the financial markets to work more normally.”
So either we have to have 1) the DUMBEST incompetents in the White House circle-jerk that we've ever had… either that, or 2) the most brilliant socialists sitting in that building to find a way to ram through EVERYTHING they've ever wanted for the last 50 years.
And Glenn, what do you think "lend more freely" means? It sure sounds just like the crapola that got this country into it's current situation.
Then it's a poorly crafted bill with dubious unintended consequences. Dodd represents the home state of many powerful banks and by extension many powerful bankers. He knows who butters his bread. This overage frat boy should be cracking rocks in the hot sun.
Nice article as usual Gary! "Song of Sodom" — that was priceless!!
I wish I could be amazed at the hypocrisy of this administration and Congress, but I've seen democratic administrations before. Almost every interview the Obamabots give starts with, "it's time for us to come together" followed immediately by a call to pitch fork the latest devil. This week its AIG, last week it was Cramer, before that Wall Street, before that Rick Santelli, and before that Rush. Their enemy list is longer than Hitler's and Nixon's combined.
Interesting point. If his list of enemies keeps growing, then we can start calling him the "War Monger"
Sorry for the double posts, I thought one was lost in moderation.
Please tell me what Mr. Bernanke means then.
Okay, where has everyone been for the last few months? This isn't the first time that some government yahoo has said we will spend ourselves out of this debt. That's what Obama has been saying all along. That's why I'm taking to the streets. All I have left is "political will".

It's interesting to see all these millionaire politicians complaining about other peoples bonuses. Meanwhile these "leaders" are busy giving themselves raises and perks whenever it suits them and all they have to do is slip a provision or two into a two thousand page (comprehensive) bill. They have all the money they could need and when they retire (or are retired) they will have most of their own health care provided at little to no cost, care of the U.S. taxpayer. It seems to me that they are simply jealous and, like good politicians, understand it's easier to bring others down than to run on their own accomplishments.
Nah, Lat… Mr. President will just give the enemies a set of 25 DVD's… or 25 Compact Discs, and that'll make 'em all happy again
Yeah, 103K to the good Senator. But it's okay, cuz he's trying to tax the money. Makes everything fine.
Although for our enemies, unlike our friends, he'll be sure to give them the correct ones for their region so they can actually watch them.
The dolts at work … While the Senate was constructing the $787 billion stimulus last month, Dodd added an executive-compensation restriction to the bill. That amendment provides an “exception for contractually obligated bonuses agreed on before Feb. 11, 2009” — which exempts the very AIG bonuses Dodd and others are now seeking to tax.

"progressive" programs and our dollars morph into a cacophony of corruption, spider webs of SNAFU's"
Nice, lyrical alliteration Tom. Grip 'em in tongs over the anvil and hammer 'em into submission, wordsmythe!
The government should not even be involved in this in the first place. Company failed. Put it in receivership. That solves the problem of the bonuses and removes the moral hazard of actually allowing this absurdity.
And the president wants veterans' personal insurance to pay for their own war injuries! (woops – sorry, that has nothing to do with AIG chat – it just slipped out when I read term "alternate universe.")
Wait till Barney Frank and crew run the systemic risk council
Perhaps you'all missed the demand by Chucky Schumer that the AIG execs give their bonuses to him and his pals in government or he will introduce a "special" income tax to take it all. Interesting idea, don't you think? Government thugs are considering the creation of "special" taxes directed at individuals or groups that won't bend a knee at the altar of Democrat socialism.
No government can run itself well, let alone trying to manage an economy. This was tried many times before by communist regimes. You cannot centralize this stuff.
In short, BO is even a bigger moron than I thought. You have to love Affirmative Action. We need MORE of this, right?
I vote for #1
I heard that dilly from chuck the great. That my friends is the unadulterated voice of communism. As they start kicking the chairs out from under the constitiution, unless they're somehow stopped, this is the sinister shape of things to come. Trouble is coming from all sides.
I think Bernanke is right and wrong. He's right that we don't have the political will to solve the problem. He's wrong about identifying the problem itself. The problem is the Fed, its destructive monetary policies have caused the bubbles we keep seeing. So Bernanke, show us your political will and help demolish the Fed.
Haven't you been reading the "papers"? He no longer uses the term "enemies" list. It is now "The Limbaugh Register", and I'm sure lots of us are listed.
No kidding. I love that. It is F**king distracting. Thats all it is. They are covering their butts because THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! And then we have this awesome dude Geithner at Treasury. Arguably the most important cabinet position and they only have one guy so far from the administration. the rest of the jobs are wide open? WONDER WHY? FTS!
Even some of the founding fathers, like Hamilton, threw around the idea of a national bank, but not to manipulate interest rates and control our money supply to the extent that they are now.
====Well, Mr Satan you should know from the deals that Obama and his minions made to you to get elected!! ======
Jim, you must have me mistaken for George Soros.
====I have delayed laying anyone off to my own last dollar, taking as little as I can for my own family so that I don't have to fire anyone.=====
Jim, you and I and millions of others didn't go into business to be a charity or "non profit" organization. Undoubtedly you are doing what you can to meet payroll, however, If you need to lay off people here's what I suggested to another person: take a walk through the employee parking area and note down who has an obama bumper sticker, they will be the ones fired.
This has been a comedy of errors with enough blame for everyone in congress to get some. It starts with the Community Redevelopment Act being reworked by the Clinton Administration. Next is the justce department and ACORN coercing banks to make loans by acusint them of "relining". Then comes Dodd, Waters, and Franks absolutley crowing about the accomplishments of Fannie and Freddie in regards to affordable housling.
the tipping point….and Ben Benanke owns this one…is when the fed rasied rates to fight a non exsistant threat of inflation. You could smell the mortgages start to turn after the second rise in rates…but he kept going…4 mor times I think…until he pushed so many loansinto default that the whole system came tumbling down. He certainly has cojones.
I posted this a few days ago: I’m in my office working today(Saturday) and as a business owner I think that it would be a good idea to start, “The Conservative Retribution Movement.” Align small businesses to react to the liberal onslaught. Determine who your liberal employee’s are and fire them first, deliver these morons to their Messiah. For every percentage of a tax increase fire a commensurate number of employee’s. We can’t take a gun and demand money but we can sure as Hell shrink the size of our companies. Just an intemperate thought?
True Hamilton did support one, but there were others like Jefferson who were vehemently against a "monster bank" because they could foresee how destructive to their liberties it would turn out to be.
"We’d be better of as a nation if the mob was running the nation; they at least are concerned about the well being of the country unlike our prostitutes in DC"
Now why would you want to give PROSTITUTES a bad name by comparing them to that sorry bunch of lying, corrupt, pretentious scumbags that go by the name of "senators" and "congressmen"?
Or do you perhaps know something about Nancy Pelosi that you'd like to share…?
P.S. not only are they giving those vile murderous Hamas terrorists $950 MILLION of OUR tax money, but Obama also set up an additional $20,000,000 fund to bring over terrorists TO THIS COUNTRY for the purpose of giving them a college education! I'm sure they'll feel right at home being fawned over by their liberal degenerate self-loathing professors and dimwitted AmeriKKKa-hating radicalized fellow students.
This keeps getting stranger and stranger, it seems like these wise men LOL are falling all over themselves trying to conjure lie after lie.
While watching the Communist News Network this morning on their innane program Road To Recovery…it seems like Obama and his band of misfits knew about these bonus packages for sometime and are now falsely acting surprised.
Contractual Payment is now … BONUS … George Orwell is rolling in his grave,, saying …"WHy didn't I think of that?!?!"
Free up lending? Hell, I'd be happy if HSBC and WaMu (yeah, the one Chase took over) would just lower my interest rates. You know, the rates they just raised because I made the mistake of paying my bills on time. There seems to be an direct relationship between my credit score and my interest rates. The higher my credit score, the higher my interest rates. Put another way, the poorer the quality of the bank's own money-handling, the better quality of my money-handling, the higher my interest rates. I think I'll just stop paying my bills for a few months, wait for my credit rating to go through the floor, and then apply for a mortgage I can't afford for a house I don't need. It's simple Obanomics. I think my goldfish knows more about finance than these idiots.

Stan, way ahead of you there and in fact my little post is just my opening salvo in an operation I have given a lot of thought to. I will be sure to keep you in mind!
As for yours and Satan's advice on which employees to fire, I agree with you. However, in my company, everyone thinks just like me, it is one reason I hired them! Of course, I didn't know their politics for sure until I got to know them, but there are certain traits that conservatives have… this is one reason why I find it hard to fire them, not only for politics, but because they are decent, hardworking, and moral.
Well, now you know how Citibank says they are showing a profit for the first two months of the 2009.
Glenn apparently has the reading comprehension of a sardine. Poor fool. Glenn when you learn to read and understand what you are reading come find us. We'll quiz ya!
Now the President is encouraging banks to make more small business loans….does this sound familiar? Now we'll see a rash oh bad business loans, same as we had mortgages….the bottom line is that the government should not be involved in telling how to do thier business period!
Faux outrage by co conspirators. They are after all politicians. THey obsfucate, distract and lie in order to preserve their teeny tiny spot on stage for just ONE MORE ROUND! Aren't we lucky. Not. Bawny Fwank is the worst one. The man should be in jail, for treason. What he did is treason. What Dodd did is treason.
Bawny Fwank, LOL! Sounds good to me.
I say handcuff 'em together, and drop 'em off in a National Forest somewhere.
I'm voting for #3 all of the above, now what do we do about it?
This is only going to get uglier with each passing day.
These a..holes in Washington have all be so crooked for so long now they can't come up with a competent strategy for anything. All the financial and political schemes are coming home to roost.
"(billion with a 'B')" LOL Was that a great movie or what? And a great reference for this article, too. Kudos!
Well, Mr Satan you should know from the deals that Obama and his minions made to you to get elected!! But I digress, this is one of the major problems of the US today. Government is NEVER the bad guy and business ALWAYS is. The founding fathers established a free press in the constitution because they envisioned that a free press would keep Government in check. There was NO OTHER REASON for this to be in the constitution except for this reason. However, we have a press that LOVES Government and the Liberal indoctrination machine, including Hollowwood continues to demonize Business and Laud Government (unless it is Republicans of course, and then it is corrupt). People today or SHEEPLE as I affectionately call them, simply don't even think of Government as being a problem, they instinctively turn to Government as the SOLUTION to all problems after years of Brainwashing. So Barry O, can get up there and pontificate about taking away private planes for businesses and going on about Greed, while at the same time presiding over the biggest and most greedy and destructive Government grab in the history of the world! One that will bankrupt our children and reduce the nation to Nobles and Serfs with little opportunity for any but the Nobles, and people quiver with ecstasy as they watch the One talk TOUGH to those greedy businesses that provide their jobs.
I say that we conservatives with principles ought to start voicing our opinions in the most powerful way that we can, our dollars. As a small business owner, I have prided myself the most on my capacity to provide for my employees. I have delayed laying anyone off to my own last dollar, taking as little as I can for my own family so that I don't have to fire anyone. But according to Barry O, I am a greedy person that just got "lucky" and I am not entitled to anything that I have worked for. I don't ask for handouts or even make cuts in "unnecessary staff" it would be nice if there was a way that like minded people would know what I am trying to do and support companies like mine, and not like AIG or GM.
"I think my goldfish knows more about finance than these idiots"
Maybe so, but I'll bet your goldfish can't read meaningless-but-lofty-sounding blather from a teleprompter like Dear Leader!
Better, actually. My fish never learned to look left, then right, then left without ever actually looking anybody in the eye. And she hasn't learned how to say "uh, ummm, uh." It's a much more elegant "blub, blub."
Stan, way ahead of you there and in fact my little post is just my opening salvo in an operation I have given a lot of thought to. At least from the standpoint of Conservative movement as buying power with aligned businesses goes. I will be sure to keep you in mind as one to maybe exchange ideas sometime!
And I. will. find. a. way. I always do! Also, my company isn't so big that it I don't know everyone fairly well. But you are right and Satan is right and we need to leverage our movement, and do it better than Liberals do. They do it through media control and indoctrination, we can do it through buying power, and the rights of Private Business (those that are left) and there is nothing stronger.
Perhaps someone can fill me in on this thing with AIG – I heard on the radio somewhere that Hank Greenberg – who built AIG over 40 years (and a solid Republican) was forced out by none other than "Client Number 9" – a.k.a. Elliot Spitzer – on one of his Wall Street Vendettas = Greenberg ran the company conservatively and the new CEO started this derivatives trading?
I think it is time to take to the streets. Admittedly I don't fully understand all of these financial connections but it would seem that everyone is pointing at everyone else as the financial problem. Yet they are all in it together at the same time, it's like the music stopped and everyone is fighting over a chair to sit in.
From what I've been able to glean from the web of lies is everyone is doing the exact thing that they are complaining about others doing. No one seems to be responsible for anything in Washington. It's not time for talk any longer about term limits and saving our economy but more about physically throwing everyone out of Washington.
This is…. Tyranny.
Gary,
Exactly what I have been thinking since this media shietstorm began….if I'm the loyal AIG sales executive for one of the profitable lines and my division had a record year….I better get my contractually obligated bonus…if i don't I may well go postal.
Well, if it´s true it bears repeating.
Somehow I don´t think Obama will raise a ruckus over this one:
Wall Street Journal: "Bonuses Expected at Fannie, Freddie"
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB12373951203667280...
Can you remember when everybody got their knickers in a twist about Sarah Palin´s supposed "class warfare rhetoric"? A number of "moderate Republicans" joined liberals in denouncing her anti-elitist remarks, such as praising the values of small rural towns (how divisive!).
Now that Obama is waging all-out REAL class warfare, where are they? Where are they now that the great UNITER Obama is using envy and fear to set Americans against Americans?
Libs have been misrepresenting an old American tradition. Anti-elitism is part of the culture. Which is why our leaders always tried to convince us that they are common, down to earth types. A healthy thing in a Republic.
What conservative anti-elitism is NOT is hatred of true achievers. Anti-elitist conservatives love them. It is the left that hates the businessman. It is the left that felt no compunction in mocking a self-made hockey mom for not having been at a good college. It is the left that smeared a Clarence Thomas, who overcame grinding poverty, or David Petraeus who saved Iraq. Their definition of "elite" is a bit different from ours and encompasses hack politicians and bureaucrats.
Gordo, it's real simple. (They like it when it's simple so they don't have to get a headache thinking too hard.) Anything they label Republican….Conservative….non-Lefty….is BAD. Anything collectivist, socialist, liberal, 'progressive', Marxist… is GOOD. Simple to understand, yes?
How I would love the Left to suddenly wake up and say, "Wow. There it is, you guys were right. This is totally nuts, let's leave Crazyland and go back to America." But sadly, that ain't gonna happen. the mental deraingment that is socialism will continue to metastasize. Watch for the division and hatred to intensify in the coming months of Obama's failure. He will direct vitriole and class envy at the Rich (everyone who makes one dollar more that you do) and we will see neighbor pitted against neighbor, friend turned foe, and brother fighting brother. How's that for unity…hope and change we need…
I'm a writer…but I give up. I cannot write fiction as bizarre as this current debacle.
Hey Gary! You basically described the build up to, The Civil War in the 1850’s. This is a reality promised us all in the 60’s and 70’s. I thought it was funny and cool back in the day. Carter cured me of my liberal notions, I prey Obama has that same effect, so far so good, huh, he’s been a train wreck. I believe this country is inherently conservative and we were in a throw the bums out mood last election cycle, it’ll swing back, this time a true conservative, right.
Stan — As pessimistic as i sound, and alarmist at times (hey give me a break, I'm a freakin' ACTOR! lol) I actually think you are dead-on correct. I too was disuaded for my adoration of all things Liberal by the good Mr. Carter — which laid the mood ripe for the acendancy of RR. "As government increases, Liberty contracts." Loved that guy!
