State of the Union: Pandering As An Art Form
by Gary GrahamThe President is a great orator. That doesn’t make him a great leader. I know, I know – give him a chance. But if you were able to glimpse into the future and could glean important information, vital information that a nation’s leader was actually unknowingly leading his people over a cliff; wouldn’t you…want to tell someone about it?
I am no genius. I’m a pretty average, normal guy…but a guy who has been paying attention. I remember the past, as it helps me extrapolate into the future and make better decisions for myself and my family. Avoid the pitfalls. Swerve around the danger. I don’t doubt President Obama is a smart man, loves his family and truly wants what he considers to be the best for America.
But obviously, he hasn’t been paying attention.
The President said today, following up on his speech before the joint session of Congress: “…because we know that business, not government, is the engine of growth in this country. It is entrepreneurship and industry that are the well-springs of an economy that has been the greatest force of progress and prosperity in human history.”
Huh? Did these words actually emanate from the mouth of one Barrack Obama today? One week after he signed a bill that evidences a completely opposite point of view? “Business, not government, is the engine of growth”?? Then why, may I ask, are we not letting business grow, instead of government?
Wow, I’m jolted into a major communication disconnect. Whiplash neck spasms in tag team Wrestlemania, C-6 and C-7 locked in a smackdown. Calls are going out to my chiropractor and my accountant, in that order.
The President’s words today sound awfully familiar; don’t they to you? The President almost sounded like …Ronald Reagan for a second. Almost sounds like his statement was cut-and-pasted from a previous Reagan speech. But after last light, RR must be rolling over in his grave. And President Bush doesn’t get a pass. As was pounded in last night, the Obama administration ‘inherited’ this deficit, this debt, this crisis. (Nevermind the whole Freddie Mac, Fanny Mae fiasco and the Democrat’s mishandling that lead to the mortgage meltdown…are you listening Dodd, Frank, and Pelosi?) President Bush acted like no Conservative I’ve ever known when he okay’ed the TARP legislation. And by the way…where is that $700B and why did it not accomplish what it was supposed to? So here’s a bent twist to syllogistic reasoning (If A equals B and B equals C, then A equals C): Now we have, If A equals B and B equals C, then O equals S, unless M doesn’t do what we want it to, and we have to tap G to T the R and then ZZ equals Top.
So problem solved — Let’s throw more money at the problem, smile and declare it a Success. I feel good now.
The truth is often found in the simplest of answers: Socialism does not work. Scream it from the rooftops to all the dumbed down voters who didn’t pay attention to world events the past 50 years.
But how does Obama’s Conservative words square with his recent actions? Does it sound to you like he truly believes that “business, not government, is the engine of growth in this country”? Oh, wait – I forgot to translate the statement. Sorry, my bad. I, being a formal college-indoctrinated liberal, actually speak fluent Lefty. And since you, the reader, deserve the truth, I shall now provide for you that valuable service.
“…business, not government, is the engine of growth in this country.” Translation: “Business is a slave of my newly re-imagined government. Yes, it is the engine, and yes I will have my hands firmly on the steering wheel, it will go when I stomp the accelerator and not before, and it will be fueled by the incredible debt I am now piling onto your future generations.”
And moving on to the rest: “…it is entrepreneurship and industry that are the well-springs of an economy that has been the greatest force of prosperity in human history”. Translation: While all that sounds really neat and noble and all that…what I really mean to do is shackle entrepreneurship and industry with carefully tightened regulation, restriction, taxation, marching orders, and constraints, forcing business and industry to produce products nobody wants to buy but that I think we really, really need to make, in order to save the planet for the children and for working families…until innovation is frustrated, incentive is exhausted, and once and for all, the beast that is Capitalism is sucked completely dry.”
Any questions?
I mean… What sort of flim-flam, talking-out-of-both-sides-of-his-mouth, snake-oil salesman, con artist are we dealing with here? And I thought Bill Clinton was slick!
And the sums involved! Can any of us actually contemplate how much a trillion dollars is? Sure, we say, flippantly – it’s a thousand billion. Big deal. But really, it’s a number so big, we can’t even picture it. Grains of sand on the beach, number of stars in the sky type of thing. A few hundred million we can maybe picture. But a trillion or two, or three? It ceases to hold any meaning to us.
So he’s able to slip that on to our tab. Megamyopia – it’s so big we can’t even see it.
But! Tell ya what I’m gonna do…come closer little lady, that’s right, step right up, here’s what I’m gonna do. If you act today, I am including in your purchase of Dr. Barry’s Magic Elixir Stimulus Package, an absolute free no-cost-to-you TAX REBATE! No, don’t look over there behind that curtain, look here, see, it’s MONEY! Free MONEY! Just don’t save any of it, SPEND IT NOW, hurry, run off and spend all of your fee money!
I got a headache.
There it is. To lighten the sting, to lessen the blow, we get a payoff. Tax breaks for everyone earning less than $250K. And why that arbitrary cutoff? Because the number of voters earning over 250K is so small as compared to those earning less. (The Dems play the numbers game dontcha know…but we mustn’t call it pandering, lest we be ‘haters’.)
So, even though, according to President Obama, “entrepreneurship and industry that are the well-springs” of the economy…we are going to punish achievers earning more than 250K with higher taxation. Everyone else gets a pass, in fact, “the checks are in the mail.” Now…not everyone in the upper income bracket is a heartless, shiftless and arrogant, extravagance-addled, cruel and selfish jerk. (Though you wouldn’t know it to listen to the class-warfare spewing mainstream media.)
Many of my good friends are quite affluent. They are decent people who work hard, love their families, live life with vigor and vitality and love America. Aren’t theirs ‘working families’ as well? Gary Sinise is a friend of mine. He earns, I’m guessing well over the $250K line. But his is a ‘working family’. He loves his wife, his kids, his country. Yet, he is in the earning class that is daily maligned by public sentiment as ‘rich guys’… ‘wealthy, greedy bastards’ who don’t care about the ‘little people’. So let’s get even with them. The party’s over, dudes…time to pony up. You wanna dance, ya gotta pay the band. Cough up, tightwad, The One told us you’re not paying enough (even though your relatively small group is paying well over 50% of the taxes) so it’s time to get out the checkbook. Because you ‘can afford it’.
And that’s another thing. How do we know what someone else ‘can afford’? And what business is it of ours anyway? Only the truly greedy and envious can make the claim that they know what somebody else can or cannot afford. Isn’t it ironic that those who decry the rich as ‘greedy’ …are they themselves the truly greedy; as it is they who covet something to which they have no rightful claim.
But back to my evil and greedy rich friend Gary Sinise. Nevermind the tremendous contributions he makes towards the Arts. Nevermind the community events he volunteers to organize each month. Nevermind the exhaustive effort, time and sacrifice Gary expends selflessly year-in and year-out flying to the Middle East to entertain and uplift our troops; the men and women who lay their lives on the line daily to preserve our freedoms. But…he achieved more than the average Joe, so he must be punished.
For the rest of us… Oh joy, we get money back! (Even though some will get checks who paid no taxes, maybe aren’t even legal citizens, but…are prospective Democrat voters, hint hint.) “The check’s are in the mail,” said the President last night. Hmmm…tempt millions of people with immediate gratification, even though we are going further and further into astronomical debt. Does this sound at all familiar? As in…the very thinking that lead to our economic catastrophe? There is another phrase for attempting to mollify people from looking too closely at your actions – Hush Money.
But oh we all feel good about it…because we’re doing it for ‘Working Families’, dontcha know. This is the new feelgood buzz word, replacing the former Lefty fave, ‘for the children’. If you are jamming it to the citizen taxpayer, (er, I mean asking the people for more patriotic sacrifice)…you can’t do any better than to do it ‘for the children and working families.’ Cue music, We Are The World. Pass the Kleenex box, please.
And since, sniff sniff, everything Bigger Government is doing to us is being done For the Children and Working Families, who can oppose it with impunity? What, do you want to be a child-abuser, a hater of families, a bigot, tightwad homophobe, misogynist, creepazoid from hell? Well…but I just wanted…to hang on to my business… Ha! You selfish bastard! Where’s your patriotism! Give peace a chance for the change and hope we need, you asshole!
Nope, we have to go along with this. And we have to feel good about it. (hey, buddy, at least use some K-Y, huh? Maybe slip on a Sinatra record first?)
It is now considered patriotic to celebrate our own evisceration.
Many a runaway train has been jammed into the tunnel of ‘crisis’. What has emerged from the other side has rarely been desirable, or even recognizable. I am disparaged constantly for being a ‘doom and gloomer’…a sour-grapes pessimist…a hater. “Give the man a chance, my god!” they scream at me. “It’s only been a month! Don’t you want us to succeed, don’t you want America to recover??”
Well…yes and no. I love America…just not the concept of America the Lefties envision. Ameroeurope holds no appeal to me. Nor does Ameranada. Or Amerexico. And Ameranistan is right out.
Every time I see Mr. Obama’s big charming smile I am reminded of the famous bump-and-run technique of an expert pickpocket. They casually bump into you (crisis), then quickly put hands on you asking if you’re all right (caring concern), then touching you further ask if you’re sure, they bumped you pretty hard (offer to make things better), then smile and quickly leave – with your watch and wallet (taxation).
But, the Stimulus Package is officially enacted. It’s done, it’s happened. We don’t get a do-over if God-forbid, this thing doesn’t work. If this old hackneyed Keynesian socialist experiment in futility doesn’t defy the historically consistent pattern of results that have thwarted collectivists since the beginning of time… if the arrogance of its invention is not charismatic enough to lift the mechanism of the physical universe from its hinges…and the President’s plan actually works? I will tear off my clothes and dance in the street. Because everything I know will be wrong. And I will be ready for the dudes in the white coats. Please take me to my padded cell, sirs, and be quick about it. Martinis and Zoloft and please turn the TV to either The WWF or CNN, makes no difference.
Reversing this rape that has begun on our nation will take ten generations to reverse – if it can be reversed at all. America as we knew it is gone. A memory. A story to tell our grandchildren.
I’d love to believe in this monstrous spending plan. But even if you dressed up a turd… it would still be a turd.

They way the MSM fawns over President Obama reminds me of the reaction of them back in 1979, when President Carter, in a press conference, preached a Sunday school sermon on the Shiites and the Sunnies and their differences. Oh, how the MSM fell all over themselves, praising Caarter on his vast knowledge, while we were losing our foothold in that area, and Carter, who had recently described Iran as an island of stability in a volatile region was being made to look like a fool by Iran, Russia, and Nicaragua. I hope history doesn't repeat itself.
PBO is doing what I call "both things at once". Fer example: Spends $800 billion, next day says "we're gonna balance the budget"…Orders Gitmo closed, then continues renditions, etc……Says govt. is the engine of recovery, next day says business is the engine of recovery….pledges no lobbyists, then hires lobbyists. And he knows he can do this because he knows the press with let him. He is slicker than Willie, and is out Machiavelli-ing Machiavelli. The only way he's going to be exposed is for the opposition to point out his world beating CYA strategy, at every occurence, every day, incessantly until the message gets thru.
QUESTION O-THORITY!!!
Great article Mr. Graham. Next I'd like to read your opinion on what's happening to Geert Wilders.
It's not socialism, and Obama is not a socialist. Under socialism, the state takes control of corporations in both an ownership and a management sense.
Under Obama, the ownership goes to the state, but the current management stays in place. The proper name for this is not socialism, but fascism.
Properly speaking, Obama is not a socialist, he is a fascist.
Bush didn't act like a conservative because he wasn't one. And I called that during the primaries. One incident – where he ran away from a fight against Affirmative Action in Houston while Governor – demonstrated that to anyone willing to pay attention. But that is the problem – you guys don't pay attention to ACTIONS. You let both the politicians AND the candidates lie and twist fact, tell you what you want to hear, suppress things you should know, etc….
If there is to be any hope for this country, you better field someone who is loyal to THIS country. Not Isreal, THIS country. Not bankers, this COUNTRY. Not international corporations, this COUNTRY.
They better be ready to say it is time to 1) stop all immigration, 2) put up large tariffs, 3) get back to a sound money system, 4) tell Israel to go to Hell, etc…. or this country is finished.
BTW, good job replacing your picture.
So, basically, PBO is the bizarro Reagan. God help us. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to play the Florida lottery, in the hope I have a better chance of securing wealth for my family than Obama does for our country.
Ooof. Thanks for adding to my Obama Ulcer.
I've long said that the left has "Dictatorship Fantasies" and wishes to create a police state that they can then feel 'romantically' oppressed by. God help us if this presidency is a manifestation of that urge.

My mother (yeah, her again) used to say that "even Satan tells the truth occasionally when it suits his purpose." I'll just add that once he's done that, he will proceed to move forward with his nefarious plan that is the precise opposite of what he said.
It continues to amaze me that the MSM and the Obamanites continue to buy into a situation that you have, again, put into the spotlight of commons sense. Keep up the rhetoric and let us all cross our fingers that eventually we will emerge from the darkness enveloping our country and truly begin to rebuild and reinvigorate our beloved America.
GREAT article, and you nailed it. Obama is like a magician: a master of misdirection. And unfortunately we no longer have a "watchdog press" to call him out.
Regarding the bribe thing: The stimulus checks the gov't sent out last year certainly worked wonders for stimulating the economy, didn't they?

(Sorry about the naughty words, but overall , it's pretty funny)
great article, gary! my first reaction was, geesh, i'm so tired of hearing "obama's a great orator." i can hardly listen to him–his cAdence irritates me, and when i really listen to what he's saying, i just can't really understand what he's saying. anyway, i looked everything up in my dictionary. orator=rhetorician; okay, from there i looked up rhetoric. i have a choice of 4 definitions, and voila! "3b. Language that is elaborate, pretentious, insincere, or intellectually vacuous" okaaay! obama's a great orator!

Obama is a pickpocket isn't he? At least that's how I'm feeling right now.
A German invented the automobile. His name was Herr Benz. An American, Henry Ford, invented the assembly line to build the automobile a German invented.
We didn't elect an Economist in Chief.
you bet- the left (including the Clintons) discovered their love of fascism years ago… they like 'stuff' too much and there isn't as much 'stuff' in a socialist economy. What they crave is power, and control… rmember fascism is just to the left of National Socialism; it is not on the 'right'. Also, too Roosevelt was smitten by Mussolini, his WPA was right from the Italian dictator… the flip side of the Roosevelt dime has on it what symbol? If you said the fascia, you are correct…
Wow… Gary Graham an eloquent and yet pithy conservative… who'da thunk it? Great column and spot frickin' on…
As a Chicagoan I have watched the rise of this guy from the primordial ooze that is corrupt hack left wing Cook County politics and am still amamzed by the snookering of the world by this smooth, glad handing empty suit.
The sad thing is his whole cabinet just totally stinks- Biden is a gasbag, Hill and Bill are a disaster in waiting,
Holder, Soliz, OMG… as weak as he is (and that's exactly what I still see- Pelosi rolled him pretty easy) you don't want Biden or her in charge, so say your prayers…
Obama isn't smart. He's a smokescreen parading as such. If you put your hand into smoke, you touch nothing. And that's why everyone here is so confused about last night. They saw nothing – while the Pelosi and her leftiest whooped as if it was something. It's not. It's smokescreen.
The proof is out there, folks – and it's been out there for a long while. Obama was president once before – of Harvard Law Review. Harvard tossed Obama's abysmal grades and non-existent papers and gave him the presidency of that Review because it wanted to strut and preen that it wasn't racist. But the real world saw through it. Not a single judge and not one top tier law firm offered Obama a job – all the smoke in the world couldn't hide the fact that Obama wasn't smart.
It's deja vu all over again last night. Same smoke screen – except now it's Pelosi and her jerks applauding instead of Harvard. But just like the judges and the top tier law firms, Wall Street has seen through that smoke and it doesn't want anything to do with it. Neither do I. Smoke kills.
celeste – the first time I heard this 'great orator', my jaw dropped. He's a moron! (The only one who speaks worse in Caroline Kennedy. And God, you know how bad THAT was.) Hearing Obama's umm, errs, uhm – long gaps – not answering the question, rambling, losing his train of thought, etc. stunned me.
I've heard over and over again the old tale 'the emperor has no clothes' but that was always something that pertained to other cultures and other times. I am stunned to see it happening right here and now in mine.

Gary, Gary, Gary…so much here, I've been informed I need to split my comments in two. First, if this plan works, I will happily join you in tearing off my clothes (not a pretty sight as my wife will testify) and join you dancing in the street (preferably a dead end one and I'll skip the Zoloft Martini)
As for contemplating what a trillion dollars is? A number so big we can't even picture it. I heard Doug McIntrye mention on his show last week (I may be a bit off as it was about 6 in the morning and I was just wiping the sleep from my eyes) if you were to think in terms of 'seconds'…a million would be about 8 months…a billion would be about 11 years…a trillion would be about 34 years. How's that for a picture?
It's only Monopoly money to these people now. I'm just going to stay focused and live my life as best as I am able.
One day at a time.
I just tried contacting my Congressman, Brad Sherman, in response to an email his office sent trying to sell me on 'The Wonderfulness of the Spending Bill' (my label not his) however, after calling, I was informed the woman I need to speak to was 'out to lunch' (hmmm) and I should call back in an hour or so. Ah…ok.
Finally, although it's getting later by the 'second', it may be time to revisit Hayek and 'The Road to Serfdom', as it seems that is the road we are all now on.
http://www.manhattan-institute.org/html/hayek2006...
A good way to kill some time, by the way, while waiting for your Congressman's Girl Friday to return from lunch.
And don't forget that the $250,000 threshold will also negatively impact small businesses, that growth engine that President Obama is currently so fond of talking about. Unfortunately he'll be cutting them off at the knees.
http://the100mostannoyingthings.blogspot.com/
Obama, in his heart, despises free enterprise.
Hopefully he'll use his head, and understand his own reactionary-left prejudice, and try to overcome it.
Has anyone looked at other third world countries? Know why they are third world. No currency. Their governments due to greed and mismanagement wrecked the value of their currency. So what do the people have in Africa, no welfare, no social security, no retirement, anything that requires currency that is where we are heading. The people in Africa have become slaves to these regimes. The poor here will become slaves also. A little irony never hurts any situation.
“…because we know that business, not government, is the engine of growth in this country."
What he meant was, the businesses and industries HE wants to succeed will cause growth.
If things get better, that doesn't mean that it was Obama's plan that made things better. It may just be wasted money. It may be true that things would have been better without it. There's just no way to know for sure.
To paraphrase Heinlein, "fascist" and "socialist" are just different terms for people who want to be controlled by others.
They worked for me, I sure felt stimulated. I can't wait for my $13 in tax savings this year, I might even treat myself to a supersize upgrade at the old golden arch dinner clubl! Yeah baby!!
"Under socialism, the state takes control of corporations in both an ownership and a management sense."
Like placing caps on executive compensation? Your argument is weak.
Pickpocketting isn't how I'd describe it… more of a robbery with a little… uh, violation thrown in.
Roosevelt's "New Deal" and Hitler's "New Order" were both the same thing, formerly known as the "Swopes Plan". The Nazis were proud of this, and even bragged about it. Gerald Swopes was a big Wall Street guy in the twenties, and was ass-deep in both American and German industry. Think: General Electric, for starters.
Roosevelt tried to claim that it wasn't the same, but it was, and is, Corporate Socialism.
No room for small business in a big old socialist world is there? Small business just isn't double plus good.

Gary, let me take issue with your very first sentence. I know you are trying to be nice and respectful and all, but "orator" implies to me that Obama is an eloquent public speaker. But that's not really him, is it? He's more of a good public reader. Take away the crib sheet and he's about as eloquent as your average high school jock.
As I see it, he's essentially the books on tape version of a President.
He is a great liar and a good reader. He has been trained in the advanced courses in motivational speaking. The only problem is that any time the moron opens his mouth the Dow Tanks! We could do without a President like this one.
You've heard of an Obamagasm? Well, for the past few weeks I've been having Ograhamsms. You say just exactly what I think….with fewer curse words. Hopefully after a couple more months of talking out of both sides of his mouth, the people will realize what a colossal error they made in electing this fool and actual Conservatives can take back Congress and at least put the brakes on the big government agenda of The One and his Minions. Thanks Gary!
Well, in the very least he could a) not sign anymore stimuli into effect and b) SHUT THE BLEEP UP for a month or two and see how Wall Street reacts. Wall street was doing this throughout the campaign as well. Everytime McCain closed the gap, stocks went up. Everytime Obie gained, stocks tanked. Oh yeah he is a big liar with a 27 year old doofus speech writer who splices bits of old speeches together and –tada!–calls them NEW! A smart as the dems are they don't seem to recognize patterns. Maybe cognitive tests for everyone??
Right on (as in "Write on")–keep 'em coming, Gary, and everyone else…………….
Once BHS was elected I, for the first time in my life, pondered the thought of living elsewhere other than America the Once Beautiful, –however not because HE was elected–but because of WHO elected him (those who made up the majority of voters who put him in office: the earth-bound immoral (Democrats), the blind and gullible "independents" and conservatives, and those who know otherwise (though my heart goes out to their sentiments) but voted with their hearts ("free at last–here's our chance to put a (half) black man in the White House") but not their minds). His election into office was, I believe, an indictment against the faithlessness and ungodliness of America–and only speaking out for the truth, repentant hearts and the grace of God will turn U.S. around………..
Gary, your abortion piece was from the heart and personal experiences, so it was worth reading, even though I disagreed with your conclusions. This piece on Obama doesn't even rise to the level of wishful thinking. One obvious point: in Bill Clinton's last two years in office, we were starting to pay down the national debt for the first time since before I was born. George Bush took one look at that surplus, and acted like a kid in a candy store. He thought giving it away was fun. If there is one thing the American people, let alone the Obama administration, have every right to blame George Bush for, it is the record size of our national debt, and our annual deficit. He didn't put money away for a rainy day when times were good, now we have to deal with getting out of a crisis on top of a huge deficit. That is the number one reason Bush not a conservative, just an amateur in over his head. He may be a good speaker, but what I admire is his cool competence. Eat your heart out. (I know, you just want to be different from all the avante garde Hollywood types, but you individuals are all alike. Here in the real world, the upper midwest in the heart of America, we like Obama.)
I just wish this 1) no more stimulus checks for the electorate. They didn't do anything last time except pay down some individual debt, 2) no more stimulus bills (Like that is really going to happen) 3) flat taxes for everyone-it'll be easier to figure taxes and take up less shelf space in the Library of Congress, and 4) a great AWAKENING in this country to the fact that Obie is a moron who can read a teleprompter beautifully but sucks big time when asked to talk for himself. Will I get my wish list? I'm praying hard! Number 4 MAYBE. The others? probably not. Because none of those dimballs in power are teachable.
As far as running naked in the streets with you if this dubious plan works–let me consult my husband!!
Keep the Zoloft, I'll take a pomegranate martini though.
I always enjoy your posts.
Tariffs don't work in an interconnected economy. Wealth is created by trade. Stop immigration of UNSKILLED workers who drain the system but let in the best and brightest who yearn for the freedom America offered and will again offer once the Democrats have run their course in 2010. Israel is America's friend and ally.

The left uses words to deflect their actions and will never view a word's meaning as fixed. It's the key to their game, the constantly shifting meaning of terms. Orwellian and Kafkaesque.

Gary you had to bring up syllogisms and Logic was a class that made me wish for a rootcanal. Oh I did alright in the class but it was out of survival you know..water rising, and your swimming against the current all the while skinny proff with coke bottle glasses yelling if then questions! ARGHHH!
Good post. Jindal's response no matter what the Shegollum racist pygmy Helen Thomas says (why isn't bringing up Slumdog and Bobby Jindal a racist statement?) says.
Or a well-read man.
"Books on tape version of a President". LOVE IT!
He is a good speaker and, like Bill Clinton, he says a lot of words that sound really pretty, but mean absolutely nothing. It sounds like he saying something specific, but he really said nothing specific. And frankly, every time he opens his mouth the Dow drops 250 points.
I was impressed the first time I heard how Obama spoke at the 2004 convention. After that … not so much. I started listening to *what* he said.
And as far as what’s going to happen with the meddling he has perpetuated – everything is cyclical. Although, as has been proven many times, actions have consequences!! The results of the Dems handi-pandering will live on for decades, which is what they wanted; a lot of “good social work” being accomplished. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Just with how it was done and what it’s cost.
But what will eventually come about is the good ol’ USofA can-do attitude will take over and we’ll kick the Dems / Socialists / Facists out. We’ll again allow conservative econonomics to come into practice and we’ll see another era of prosperity flourish, even with paying for what just happened. All to be co-opted again further down the line when those not in the healthy economy creation game decide that they again need to take what’s been created, and give away even more.
I keep hearing that we had a surplus at the end of Clinton's administration. But we had a $5trillion debt. How could we have had a surplus if we had a debt?
The reason why the deficit came back in 2002 was because the economy stalled, which meant that government revenues were not increasing as quickly as government spending. Obama has done more damage to the deficit in thirty days than bush did in eight years.
I'm not real eager to defend Bush on his spending, but we don't know what was really going through his head when he divvied out the surplus, and no one is a mind reader. The first official justification was that the surplus was the result of over taxation, therefore the money went back to the people. Personally, I think it was a bribe towards voters. Bush called it "stimulus", but whatever– It was a Keynesian approach which isn't conservative and it never works.
The Obama administration is in no position to place blame about the "inherited" deficit when their first month of deficit spending compared to Bush's is like placing Jupiter next to Earth.
He should also refrain from popularizing the phrase "inherited deficit" since that is exactly what he has pushed on the next five generations. Every child born from 2009 on will be known as "Generation Stimulus".
We need an ammendment to the U. S. Constitution that states that the US Federal government cannot take more than 1/3 anyone's income and cannot compel the states through spendiong mandates or tax collection to increase taxes.
My uncle has the original 1913 tax code in a picture frame in his office. It is one page of forms and three of tax code. The upper marginal rate was 1%. Next to that is the current PRentice Hall tax service volumes. One shelf of tax forms, two shelves of tax code, 10 shelves of IRS regulation and 10 more of court precedents.
The makers of the 16th ammendment never envisioned they have to put a speeed limit on the government tax rate. They were wrong. We need to correct this. It is the only way to get our freedom back. The good news is we can start no matter who is in office.
Well, ya. All government spending is really a bribe to voters. There have been several political theorists to point out that when the American government realizes it can bribe the people with their own money, the country is doomed. I would phrase it "When the people believe the government is the source of wealth, America is doomed." But either way, we've clearly reached that point.
The budget was in the black; The accounts payable listed 5$ trillion. One is your annual profit & loss, and the other is IOU's.
He is not a great orator. He is a scold and a downer, a real drag. Watch his face: He scowls and his eyes, I repeat, his eyes are lifeless. He has a deep voice and he is not Bush. That is the essence of his appeal.
I'd like to help clarify. At that particular point in time, we were spending less than the government was taxing (surplus), but we still had a lot of debt from years of overspending.
Gary,
Nice article. I think the president is a great salesman, but not a great orator.
And when I say great, I mean he is better at being full of crap than telling the truth. Sorta like a successful used car saleman. Pull away the teleprompter and you get a lot of ummmmmmmmms and ahhhhhhhhhhs.
LOL!!
I also think it is amazing that all these people who criticize Bush's spending seem to forget September 11th. Sure, he had a surplus when he got into office, and then shortly thereafter we experienced the most serious attack that this country has ever experienced. The amount of money that had to be poured into security measures alone in the aftermath was enough to kill the surplus, and while many may say that this expenditure was unnecessary, we haven't been attacked again. Obama really has no excuse for his spending.
As someone who teachers public speaking, I would rate the Big Moca as just OK. Then again, folks always hear what they want to hear.
As an economist, I would have to say he is a big zero.
IMHO.
No offense but Clinton handed Bush the great tech meltdown. I am not defending Bush but between that and the 911 meldown, the economics were not pretty.
Now, it is the Big Moca job to fix it.
I don't think he has a clue.
I agree in part — especially as my money vanishes from the market.
But, I have to say that I don't think he's a very good public speaker. He's a good reader, nice words well spoken, but there's no knowledge base or intellect behind it. Compare him to Clinton who always knew his topic enough to sound like he had thought about the issue, and who had strong skills for feeling crowds (no pun intended) and working them in the right direction. Compared to Clinton, Obama's just a reader. He has one tone, and if you get him off his teleprompter, he sounds like he didn't prep for the event, and like he's never thought about the issue or informed himself. I also have yet to see him hold a crowd when he's not reading — his chemistry vanishes. Honestly, I would rate Clinton as the much, much better public speaker and the much better politician.
I also see "worrying" (if you're a democrat) signs that he's inflexible in his thinking and will be unable to adjust to correct the mistakes he makes (something all great politicians need to be able to do reflexively).
Margaret Thatcher said it best: "To cure the British disease with socialism was like trying to cure leukemia with leeches." She went on to point out that "the trouble with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money." Oh Maggie, where are you now that we need you?
However, there is one problem with the surplus — though I agree we were in pretty decent shape. They never include the social security "deficit" in those calculations. Instead, they ran social security money into the general fund (lock box, yeah right) but kept the debts off record. They still do that in fact.
Dear Gary…
Were we separated at birth or something? You say what I'm thinking so much better than it sounds in my head. I work in Manhhattan Beach California where Obamamania is in full bloom. The worshippers have not even taken the bumper stickers off their cars or the signs out of their windows. Manhattan Beachers are Malibu wanna-bees
who I guarantee will be the first to get cell phones surgically implanted in…….God only knows what. Anyway….the mental midgets at work were very pleased with their savior last night and have all agreed that the wealthy should be taxed at 90% because "they can afford it". As far as I could tell wealthy means "other people" and/or Republicans.
When their employer can no longer afford to employ them….it will be amusing to hear how they manage to blame it on Bush.
Hey, sexy man. Nice new photo!
Anyhoo, I'm reading up on the post speech polling, and 92 percent were very or somewhat impressed by it, and there's an 80 percent baseline re general approval, and I'm thinking geesh, where do all the lonelyhearts go who are no longer in sync with the American people?
Heh. I'm just kidding. I knew that already.
Actually, Obama graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard Law School. I understand that you probably don't know what that means. But trust me, it's not a bad thing, particularly at Harvard Law.
You're welcome.
"The President is a great orator"
I disagree with that statement. He cannot speak a full sentence without um, ur, ah… He does not speak well what with his sing song speaking manner. He loves the sound of his voice though. Yet another 1 hour speech from him!.
On top of that he is a liar. Blaming everyone around him when he himself votes present.
"But how does Obama’s Conservative words square with his recent actions?"
He is a liar. I wish those enraptured with him on the tv comment shows would actually comment on his lies instead of what they think he is – a wonderful speaker oh my…
I think they believe this is a sports game to them instead of a serious crisis for our country.
Carolyn's comments about Harvard Law Review were spot on.
"What sort of flim-flam, talking-out-of-both-sides-of-his-mouth, snake-oil salesman, con artist are we dealing with here?"
You summed him and the presstitutes up perfectly.
Fun read Gary you’ve said it all! “You can’t polish a turd!
And remember the "peace dividend".
Kurt Vonnegut invented a PERFECT word to describe such empty-yet-lofty-sounding blather spewed by politicians (and which Obama in particular is a Grand Master of utilizing): "granfalloons".
Think about it.
Just came across this on the net (written by Anita Thompson):
Subject: Stimulus Package Explained (Q&A)
Sometime this year, taxpayers will receive an Economic Stimulus Payment. This is a very exciting new program that I will explain using the Q and A format:
Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment?
A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.
Q. Where will the government get this money?
A. From taxpayers.
Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?
A. No, they are borrowing it from China. Your children are expected to repay the Chinese.
Q. What is the purpose of this payment?
A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.
Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China ?
A. Shut up.
Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the US economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:
If you spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China .
If you spend it on gasoline it will go to Hugo Chavez, the Arabs and Al Queda
If you purchase a computer it will go to Taiwan .
If you purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico , Honduras , and Guatemala (unless you buy local).
If you buy a car it will go to Japan and Korea .
If you purchase prescription drugs it will go to India
If you purchase heroin it will go to the Taliban in Afghanistan
If you give it to a charitable cause, it will go to Nigeria .
And none of it will help the American economy. We need to keep that money here in America . You can keep the money in America by spending it at yard sales, going to a baseball game, or spend it on prostitutes, beer (domestic only), or tattoos, since those are the only businesses still in the US
Thank you again, Gary Graham! You continue to reassure me that I am not losing my mind — that the unimaginable really is happening — and getting worse. I pray for our nation.
BTW, much better pic in your profile.
Harley – I have to believe you named yourself after the bike that ran you over. Which means you still haven't recovered from the head injuries to be able to understand that before you blabber that the Big Zero graduated MCL from Harvard, you actually have to – duhhh – PROVE he did so. Just saying so doesn't make it so – you know, like saying the world is flat doesn't make it so either. Or – worse – saying Obama is eloquent.
As for Obama's legal 'brains'? NO clerkship, NO job offer. Duhhh, you can say all you want about his 'awards' this, his MXL that – it's nothing but talk if there's no result after it. Obama is just smoke and mirrors. The judges and the top tier law firms found that out after Harvard. Wall Street found it out after Jan. 20th. And those of us with ears found it out last night.
good god, you people are pathetic. gary is just spitting out the same ol' cud that he's been chewing for the last 8 years. does his poorly written rant sound any different than rush's or hannity's? gary is just hoping there are enough clowns to go around so that he might make a buck or two.
i can't believe you don't use this time to discuss your own party and problems. Jinda, the future of your party and the only politician on the planet that can make palin look like a wise choice, said it best last night: " we idiots can't be trusted by anyone…except other damn idiots- also known as our base".
any one of you morons could stand up and take control of the gop in their time of crisis. where's joe the plumber when you need him?
all joking aside…you guys are pathetic.
Obama is feeling empowered by a false mandate.
In order to remain resonant with the source of the mandate (middle America) he will remind us of a few traditional capitalistic principles. That's where you're detecting traces of Reagan. But the mandate is still contradictory and imaginary.
The truth is that these people do not truly understand macroeconomics. They don't know what they're doing, they don't understand the real reason they won the election, and they will continue to progress us towards the edge of the cliff before they are purged just like the Republicans were after the last two elections.
The chowder-head-in-chief doesn't believe anything he reads off the teleprompter. Has no idea what he is saying. Clinton was the same way; saying THE something to each interest group they want to hear. He will do what he does separate from the words in some oration.
To clarify, what we call macroeconomics, they call class warfare. When we adopt JFK's philosophy, "When the tide rises, all the boats rise," they say "Tax cuts for the rich."
When Bush 43, Bush 41, Reagan, and every president before them showed enough class to not criticize former or new administrations, Obama and Carter broke these highly respected traditions to self-righteously take jabs and place blame. See, American tradition doesn't matter to open minded, caring, liberal presidents who believe world history started on the day they were born.
"He has been trained in the advanced courses in motivational speaking."
To think, if I had just paid more attention to those Tony Robbins' infomercials, I could have been President!
Amazing as to how the 'supposedly' most tolerant among us is so intolerant.
And so much for the need for tolerance argument constantly used against conservatives. Now, since I don't happen to espouse that belief…
I remember Jimmy Carter. PBHO is worse. This flim-flam, talking-out-of-both-sides-of-his-mouth, snake-oil salesman, con artist we are dealing with here is no help to the libs in politics. (Thx, David).
I also thank you for promoting my own militancy against lib ideas, behavior, and severely stunted, constantly shifting ethical centers. You made me into the weapon against your own hypocrisy. My tolerance against your goofy ideas and behavior is gone forever. If you thought conservatives could be bad before, you haven't seen what I intend to berate my elected officials into doing against your stupidity from now on.
Liberals OWN this idiocy. And the "Misery Index" once more awaits them. Adding that the tax reduction for the middle class just might get you enough sweaters for your family to avoid freezing to death in the Global Warming debate is just icing on the cake.
Thank You for the gift of PBHO the Most Pious. Conservatives will own politics for the next forty years if we can avoid stepping on our own crank and not act like the libs, accepting public bribery for votes. Telling them where to put their Pit of Vipers, DC stimulus money should be the first thing; back into the hands of those who had it extorted from them in the first place!
Down with the Tyrant, and all his Obsequious Toadies! Palin and Jindal for 2012! Send the slinking divisive libs back to their higher learning classrooms, there to have their public trough funds for schooling cut off!
Yeah, I'd have to go with getting hit in the head with a brick (or maybe a building), then having your house put on blocks and towed away. Then they'll sell it back to you one piece at a time (while you are responsible for the mover's bill).
Nice!!!
Well, we can't say Obama lied about tax cuts now, can we? And I really can't fault them for allowing us only $13 in savings if they can't grasp how tax cuts effect the economy to begin with. It's like when I go to the Asian buffet and get a "burrito" that tastes like a spring roll. Hey, I can't say it's NOT a burrito! How are they supposed to know the difference? As long as there are no surprises, like other creative ways to tax people or cat paws in my "burrito".
The swing shift trolls suck just as bad as the first shift trolls.
Management needs to fire their staffing service.
Ok, not an ideal analogy. I spend a lot of time at Asian buffets.
Oh, they think they understand macroeconomics. Use your search engine of choice and look up "leontief matrix" for the method they believe can be used to direct an economy. And make no mistake, the Left plans to direct the economy. (I had the misfortune of being required to study this junk (econ 307, if I recall correctly) at my collectivist school of economics (U of Saskatchewan). Ironically, I was in this class at exactly the time that the old Soviet Union collapsed due to its inability to "deliver the goods" to their people and President Reagan unleashed the massive productive power of the American economy against them. Ha!)
"As was pounded in last night, the Obama administration "inherited' this deficit, this debt, this crisis. (Nevermind the whole Freddie Mac, Fanny Mae fiasco and the Democrat's mishandling that lead to the mortgage meltdown–are you listening Dodd, Frank, and Pelosi?)"
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/251/story/53802.html
"Between 2004 and 2006, when subprime lending was exploding, Fannie and Freddie went from holding a high of 48 percent of the subprime loans that were sold into the secondary market to holding about 24 percent, according to data from Inside Mortgage Finance, a specialty publication. One reason is that Fannie and Freddie were subject to tougher standards than many of the unregulated players in the private sector who weakened lending standards, most of whom have gone bankrupt or are now in deep trouble.
"During those same explosive three years, private investment banks — not Fannie and Freddie — dominated the mortgage loans that were packaged and sold into the secondary mortgage market. In 2005 and 2006, the private sector securitized almost two thirds of all U.S. mortgages, supplanting Fannie and Freddie, according to a number of specialty publications that track this data."
"And the sums involved! Can any of us actually contemplate how much a trillion dollars is?"
Roughly 1/14th the national GDP. Or, by analogy, if it was your income and you were making the national median of about $50,000 a year, about $3,500.
Actually, a granfalloon is a group of two or more people who imagine or are manipulated to believe they share a connection based on some circumstance of little or no real significance; a false karass.
Foma are comforting lies.

I'm still trying to figure out how so many females, who consider themselves to be champions of women's liberation, were completely suckered in by the Big Daddy sweet talker who promises to bailout their their miserable lives.
So much for women's lib when the icons of Ms Betty's feminist movement are slobbering all over The Man who promises to take care of them because they are incapable of taking care of themselves.
Dennis Miller had a caller yesterday who make an excellent point…"President Obama can sweet talk a nun out of her virginity"; it is stunning that so many women fell so easily for the sweet talker. Most females have been in a relationship with a smooth operator and we know how it turns out; it won't be pretty for Liberal women when the fails to deliver those promises he made. Betrayal is a bitter pill when forced to swallow.
Here is another reason why I am attracted to Conservatism, Conservative women have strength of character which compliments themselves and the male; Conservative women know how to take care of business and are fearless.
On the other side, Liberal women have weak character which demeans themselves and the man into a hapless victim hood status full of fear and loathing; perhaps this is why so many Liberal women NEED President Obama to bail them out of their problems, they're weak sisters living in fear and living the lie that they're Liberated.
so let me get this straight…bruce here "teachers" public speaking and is an economist? damn, why aren't you "teachering" us all?
Thanks Forrest- I stand corrected (although I feel that "granfalloon" somehow sounds more like it should be the word for vapid, meaningless blather…).
Here we go, blithering into the future with another fearless Washington politician, right or left bravely spending our money in a forced march crashing towards oblivion, just remember, “it’s for the children.
Under socialism, there are no executives to cap the pay of. The companies would be run by bureaucrats., who get paid according to government pay scales. That's the whole point.
Are you acknowledging the Obama is a fascist, and excusing it on the basis that the Republicans are fascists too? That's not much of a defense.
You have confused me for a George W. Bush Republican, which I assure you I am not. I absolutely despise the Republican party. It's just that, from a freedom loving point of view, the Democrats are ten times worse.
I hope you don't consider yourself a free market capitalist. Tariffs? Really?

It's technically extortion. You pay up, or else.
