One Pissed-Off Dude
by Gary GrahamI’m an American. This has always been my favorite label, but of late even that has seemed to mean less and less. Being called an American used to carry with it a certain pride and esprit de corps that now apparently is dated and passe. How else can one explain the rash of America-haters in our midst who only claim pride in America if a Leftist resides in the White House, and can only back a war effort if the decision to go to war was that of a Democrat.
I’m a Conservative. And I am also an actor who lives and works in Hollywood. Many of my friends advise me to keep that on the down-low, advise me to not speak up lest I scuttle any future employment prospects, so predominantly liberal is the entertainment biz. And yet I persist.
You see, I’m one pissed-off dude.
I’m told I’ll hurt my career if I continually spout off about Liberalism — which I see as a growing cancer in our society. Worldwide, I’ve seen Liberalism metastasize into virulent incarnations of Socialism, and, left unchecked, even into its malignant cousin, Communism. Only the arrogant or the somnambulist would think such a thing could never happen here. It’s a matter of increment. Once a group organizes into a coalition, it’s a short step to claiming the right to the property of another group. All that is necessary is for an individual’s right to personal property to become a secondary concern. The ‘needs’ of the group must supercede, dontcha know. It’s a vicious cycle – wants become needs become rights. The fact that the thievery is done at the behest of a ‘civilized’ government does not sanitize the crime.

So I’m told I should shut up. I make my living in the Hollywood community, and Hollywood is by and large run by Liberals. I’m told I need to stay quiet when the Left has their way over issues that affect my daily life. I’m told I need to learn how to get along with the Left, learn how to compromise. I need to be more open-minded. I need to be more tolerant.
I say F T S. Ask your 9-yr-old if you have trouble deciphering that. (No, wait, don’t.)
I don’t want to get along with the Left. I want to take them down. I want to expose their idiocy for what it is and reveal it as a harmful, dangerous succession of lies and deceptions. My friends say that that effort, aside from being fruitless, will cost me work. It will cost me my career. And I say Wait-a-minute, Bucko. Those folks who founded this country were willing to risk not only their careers, but their property, their families, their very lives…the least I can do in standing up for our precious freedoms is risk a silly television career. Not to compare myself with the brilliant thinkers who declared themselves independent of England and framed our Constitution…but those were some pretty pissed off dudes too. Compared to that, loss of a little TV or movie work seems pretty inconsequential. So in honor of Pissed Off Americans past and present, I rant.
I’m pissed off that everyone seems okay on having to press one for English. We’re supposed to be tolerant and understanding that maybe some folks who now live here (legally or not) might have trouble understanding what I’m saying to them if I speak in my native tongue, regardless of the extra cost to the rest of us. FTS.
I’m pissed that my sweet well-wishing friends and acquaintances now say “Happy Holidays” instead of Merry Christmas. Oh, we don’t want to offend the non-Christians, they’ll say. Again – FTS. ‘Happy Holidays’…nice and non-specific, soothingly generic. In keeping with the spirit of the season, I try not to show it – but I roll my eyes. Jeez, could you be any more spineless? Everybody walk on eggshells for the rest of your lives, living in perptual fear someone who holds a different religion, or sexual preference, or nationality is going to suffer some little offense if you actually wish them a lovely Christmas. “Oh we don’t celebrate Christmas.” “Oh, I’m so terribly sorry, I don’t mean to offend you. Please enjoy the Holiday of Winter Solstice and Earth Renewal Day or whatever your heart leads to celebrate, if indeed you are even feeling like celebrating anything.” Shut up! Smile and say thanks. Happy Hanukkah, Merry Ramadan, Soulful Kwanzaa…whatever. Smile and say Thanks.
Can we all stop taking ourselves so damn seriously for half a minute? Hey – life ain’t a popularity contest. So grow a pair. Speak your mind and if someone can’t handle it, request that they take a hike. How the hell did we ever survive life before the all-knowing, all-caring ACLU began to run interference for all our tender sensibilities? It’s a wonder any of us grew up without some crippling psychosis that drove us to chop up our grandmother. I’m old enough to remember when Common Sense ruled the day. (*cue the Cranky Old Man music)
It irks me that Democrats are always looking to raise my taxes. I’m patriotic if I take it up the bum and don’t squeal. What’s worse, they don’t even have the integrity to call them taxes. They call them ‘fees’, or even, ‘contributions’. As I learned the word, a contribution is a volitional act. Left to free choice, I say I choose to not contribute more than I already do. Let all those who say we are overtaxed stand up with me. Those who think different can form a line to the left…and we on the right will leave you completely free to contribute more. Raising taxes takes food off my family’s table. I regard people who advocate doing so in the same vein as I would the burglar I confront in the dead of night – an enemy.
I’m pissed that I study the political issues of the day, educate myself, stay informed daily by a multitude of news sources from all slants…and yet, come election day, my informed vote is cancelled by some numbskull who votes for the nicest smile, who doesn’t know who the current vice-president is, or which party controls Congress, and what’s more, doesn’t care. Am I the only one who thinks a basic intelligence and general knowledge test should be a prerequisite for voting for our leaders? No? Too radical a notion? Well, then, why not just make the winner of American Idol president and save all the drama? Everyone can text in their vote. And Paula, Randy, and Simon… the new cabinet. “Tonight the State of the Union speech will be sung by the President, backed up by Rascal Flatts…and special guest duet with Secretary of State David Archuleta…”
I’m pissed off by how soft many in our nation have become. How whimpy the tone, how spineless the resolve. What happened to that brutally real notion that people should be held responsible for his or her actions? Nowadays, it always seems to be someone else’s fault, whatever it is. Got a life of poverty, it’s rich folks doing it to you.
Alcohol addiction, substance abuse, your mother never said she loves you. Having trouble finding work, it’s the white, black, purple guys keeping you down. Your car company is going under, it’s the unfair business practices abroad and an economic downturn. Hey, nimrods – newsflash. LIFE IS HARD. The End. Get used to it, suck it up, get some spine, invent some if you have none, and GET ON WITH IT!!!! I’d like to offer, in utter compassion, and speaking on behalf of at least several like-minded bretheren out there, a class-action BITCH-SLAP to every mamby-pamby, limp-wristed douche-bag of a complainer who has the audacity to hope that we hard-working, God-fearing, America-loving taxpayers should be forced to give you one penny of our income to enable you further in your responsibility-shirking, self-destructive habits. Get your collective shiite together, friends. I am not, nor are my friends, my brother’s keeper. Though my heart is open enough to come to someone’s need should an honest and sincere calamity befall a brother or sister… when did destitution become a virtue? Did my snooze button malfunction causing me to oversleep a couple decades? When did begging become a noble venture? You see them standing there bravely, “God bless”and something about ‘can’t find work’ scrawled on their cardboard. Victims of society, of Bush/Cheney, of Ronald Reagan, of any heartless Republican administration. And worse – hey, I’ve seen the sign people on the offramps, I’ve seen the green flow as we assuage our prosperity guilt – these guys are cleaning up! Am I in the wrong business? When, dear friends, did panhandling become a lucrative industry? FTS!
(Side note: I’ve personally offered several of these beggars who had written “Will work for food” to buy them lunch if they’ll do some yard work and fence painting for me, and the reaction was always the same. Hell no! They just want cash, right now! Hmmm…and yet the sign said… Forget about the begging, whatever happened to truth in advertising?)
Who can identify virtue, when there is no shame?
And speaking of shame…have you on the Left no shame when it comes to calling evil EVIL? What’s in a name — a terrorist by any other name is a ‘Jihadist’. A freedom fighter. A rebel. But when are we going to admit that there is an evil movement out there dedicated to our destruction. And it ain’t Sarah Palin and George Bush. It’s radical Islam and they want to cut your personal head off simply because you’re not throwing in with them.
You’re not on your knees worshiping their boy Allah, so for this you and everyone like you all over the world must die and die now. But wait, it’s a ‘religion of peace’, we’re told. Wow, not the last time I looked. If Islam is a religion of peace, where are all the peace-loving Muslim leaders decrying the radicals’ murderous actions? The beheadings, the suicide bombings, the IED’s, the blowing up innocents on buses? Where are the peaceful Islamists’ protests against Hamas, Hezbollah, Al Queda, et al? You are a frog in a pot, Lefty – being boiled slowly, apparently too slowly for you to notice. Too much Climate Change on your mind to notice that the barbarians are at the gate. When the Nazis stormed into Jewish homes in 1939 I’m sure there were more than a few head-in-the sand myopic residents screaming about the troopers tracking mud on the carpet. If only they had had the ACLU to save the day… Human rights and clean carpets surely would have abound.
Speaking of climate change, while we’re at it…if the argument is over…and the facts are clear…how is it we can predict the climate twenty years hence, when we can’t even predict with much accuracy if my ass is going to get wet attending my friend’s kid’s Bar Mitzvah next weekend. When did we give the title to anyone with a PhD in front of their name the added moniker of ‘Soothsayer’? I read Paul Erhlich’s book, THE POPULATION BOMB in the early ‘70’s and it scared the begeebers out of me. By his prediction, each human being in 2008 would have less than a square meter of space to live in. (William F. Buckley voice: “Ahh…Mr. Erhlich was unavailable for comment, ahhh… but stressed the importance of keeping his line clear, lest the Nobel Prize committee call.”) And Mr. Gore – I do believe in Climate Change. It’s called summer, spring, winter and fall. Happens each year whether I drive my SUV or not. FTS!
Before I came up with the inspired notion of tossing my life away and becoming an actor…I was fully ensconsed in the science department at the University of California, Irvine. I know the way it works. The professors confided in me. You need a problem to study, better yet a crisis, or you don’t get funding for your research. It’s that simple. One professor of botany told me that these very high-tech ultra-violet cameras we were frolicking through the fields looking at flowers through cost the University $200 thousand dollars. Off my open-mouthed gape, he shrugged, “Gotta spend the money, or next year they cut us back.” So yeah, you’re going to find a ton of scientists who swear we’re killing the planet…and we desperately need another three million dollars to study the problem.
I’m confident I could find two hundred accredited scientists to join me in an exhaustive study to find out why belly button lint is demagnetizing the moon leading to global flooding…if only Bill Gates will step up with some coin. FTS!
Lastly…can we finally be done with all the hatred? George Bush is very soon to be out of a job. Time to let up on him a bit, don’t you think? Erase the hate, Lefties. You can stop proclaiming him to be the anti-christ, evil incarnate, the boogeyman, Darth Vader, or the Heartbreak of Psoriasis. The guy did his best. Like him, don’t like him, he kept us from attack for seven-and-a-half years so let it go. Your guy is in now, so relax. Have fun again. Laugh without derision. Smile without the snide. You remember how? Take off your flak jackets, it’s going to be okay. Our brave warriors did some serious ass-kicking in the Middle East, and though there’s no shortage of crazy Islamo-fascist bad guys yet to come, at least they know who they’re f*cking with.
Somehow along the way, so many of you forgot one simple, undeniable tenet: We’re the good guys. We’re not imperialists, or else we would’ve nuked the oil countries into radioactive dust, then moved in and taken the oil. We don’t ‘torture’ prisoners, or lawyers for the Gitmo ‘detainees’ would have CNN photographing the horrid scars and missing limbs. We don’t bully smaller, less developed nations. On the contrary, we expend our more precious asset: the blood of our brave, bright and courageous young men and women – all in committed effort to free them from despotic, brutal dictators. We are not brash. In 1991 we amassed a coalition of 34 nations before we acted to oust Saddam Hussein from Kuwait, and this after months and months of negotiations and U.N. resolutions. Twelve years later after waiting six months and seeing fourteen U.N. resolutions ignored by Hussein, George W. Bush had accrued a multi-national coalition and a majority vote in Congress before sending troops into Iraq. We are the big dog on the block. And yet we ask no penance from lesser countries. Instead we offer aid in the form of cash, medicine, and humanitarian help. When we go after bad guys in war, we don’t carpet bomb, or blow up civilian-filled buses. We have smart bombs that pinpoint targets to limit collateral civilian casualites. We’re the good guys. Only an entrenched self-loathing hatred of America will prevent you from seeing that. If that’s the case, you have my sympathy. But don’t let the door hit you on the way out. And yes, this is our country, whether a Democrat of a Republican occupies the White House.
Yeah, a lot of things piss me off. But I’m a ridiculously happy guy. I’m blessed with a wonderful family, terrific friends (many, many of them Liberals, oh yes), a strong Faith in God and a sweet certainty that this nation is on the side of good in the world…and that that good will overcome the bad.
I was asked by the founder of this site to write an article… an ‘opening salvo’. Considering who might read it, and who in Hollywood might be incensed, the temptation to parse words and couch my opinions was strong. But the guy in the mirror counsels me the loudest. I was always impressed with John Hancock, when, reminded that signing one’s name to that Declaration in Pennsylvania could very well lead to their deaths…solemnly stepped forward and with grand flourish signed his name in huge, legible script. In that grand spirit…
I hereby declare my independence…from the small-minded, America-hating, race-bating, Christian-bashing, class-warfare-waging, politically-correct, collectivist, Liberal Hollywood establishment.
Anybody got a problem with that, I’ll mapquest you directions to my front door, we’ll settle it like men.

i don’t understand why being “liberal” automatically means in your eyes “america hater” or “doesn’t support the troops”.
i’m english, i live in america too. i didn’t like the war, but i respected our president and supported the troops. i was a block away on broadway when the first tower was hit. i get it, i really do.
what i don’t understand about america is the sometimes perceived unwillingness to sacrifice. joe the plumber didn’t want to pay more taxes!! why not? is it not worth paying out a little more every paycheck to ensure the security and stability of one’s country’s infrastructure?
i would posit to you that someone who would rather “keep their own money” and not “pay into the people’s pool” is actually rather MORE unamerican than the so-called “liberals”.
i don’t hate anyone. i’m happy to pay my taxes (whatever they be) in this fine country, and continue to build my life here and continue to help keep america strong, safe and the fine place that it is.

Rick – I think youve missed the point about taxes – its not ’sacrifice’ or ‘charity’ if a gun is held to your head to pay out half of what you earn so it can be given to people who did nothing to earn it. That my taxes are used to pay the military and provide them with the resources to do their job: taxes well spent. That my taxes are used to be given to an illegal alien 9 months pregnant and sitting in an emergency room for a hang nail and/or to someone who has the wherewithal to earn his own money: taxes wasted and used against me. But you see, as a Taxpayer, I dont get to decide WHERE my taxes are used. This is not sacrifice, this is slavery. And I thought we got rid of slavery over a century ago?

getting back to intelligent discourse, thank you SHARON for your eloquent reply! i totally, wholeheartedly agree with you, taxes well spent are for things like police, fire, armed forces/DoD/CIA/NSA/etc. and i also DO AGREE with you about illegal immigrants and healthcare.
in fact, i believe (please correct me if i am wrong!) that i lie on the conservative side of immigration policy. as an immigrant myself, i find it quite disgusting that people move to america with no intention AT ALL of learning the language. it makes me sick when i see tiny small kids IN AMERICA that don’t even speak english!

Rick – I’m going to pile on hear just a bit. I appreciate your honesty and seemingly good nature. But many of the conservatives you question subscribe to the philosophy that the individual can better decide where to allocate their resources than does the government.
National security it a fine endeavor. But government sponsored entitlement programs is a poor way to ensure maximum liberty and maximum prosperity for the citizens.
You see, there should be no ‘people’s pool’. The conservative system of capitalism has shown over many decades now that the people can meet their own needs, apply their capital in a more efficient manner that leaves all people better off; far better than the government can.
I’ve visited socialist countries. I’ve seen how horribly inept government are. We are a wealthy nation full of opportunity BECAUSE we haven’t subscribed to the idea that we would be better off by paying higher taxes.
The vast majority of problems in this country have either been created, or most often only been made worse, by government involvement. Limit their funds to what they do best. Limit the amount of freedom they can take from all of us.
Distribute the power and wealth away from a centrally planned state. It takes very few corrupt individuals to bring a nation down in a centrally planned government. Letting 300 million people made individual decisions with their $3 trillion in taxes protects us from the danger of a few bad men (and women).
Return to Federalism. It’s the only place trial and error, competition, can make us all better.

Rick—I have no problem paying for protect, but when the “infrastructure” grows merely to employ political cronies and pay off political debts, then I agree with no more taxes.
One of the bailout bills includes a funding for a “mob museum” in Nevada; and Madamn (deliberate typo)Speaker wants to remove the transparency that Newt & company added to legislation so that she can pass more stealth taxes, so the mega-rich like her continue to flourish on my, and your, dime.
Rick, you grew up in the midst of and indoctrinated in socialism (England right?) so we don’t expect you to understand that taxation gives government more and eventually the ultimate power over your life. The more you are taxed, the more power you give to the government and the less choice you have. Giving to others is called charity and its in keeping with the power of CHOICE and thereby FREEDOM. Taxation by a government gradually eliminates choice and freedom. I know what to do with my money a helluva lot better than a politician who should probably be sitting behind bars does. Our country gives the most in charitable contributions throughout this great country and throughout the world, simple fact. Our poorest still live better than in any continent. Even the beggars on the street corners have a means of earning cash by essentially doing nothing and have a place to sleep in many locations NOT SUBSIDIZED by the government or the tax payer. The poor in other countries don’t have that luxury. I’ve known poor people give more to charity than the uber-rich leftists, communists and marxists that suck up oxygen in Hollywood and now the White House give. (BTW I think I actually lose brain cells when I hear the Hollywood intellectual lightweight socialists speak…truly.)
Lastly, Only THE ONE gives hope on this earth and it ain’t Barack Hussein Obama or a government, its our Lord and Savior, the Big Man-JC. Come join the winning team if you haven’t already. Warmest regards, Cindy

You miss the point, America was not founded as a socialist state that requires its citizen’s to pay to a “people pool.” American’s are the most generous people in the world. They give and give freely. There is a huge difference between taxation and donation. All you have to do is research the monies donated to the victims of the Asian 2004 Tsunami or the millions and millions donated to Victims of Katrina. The Helpless deserve a safety net, the clueless don’t. The government seldom helps the helpless, but proliferates the clueless with abundant waste.

If only our taxes went to funding security and infrastructure, that would be fine. Most of our taxes now go to “entitlement programs.” AKA gov’t handouts, welfare, taking money from people who earn it and giving it to people who don’t.
I work in the small business world. Do you know how many small bizos go out of business every day? Not because of bad business practices or bad bookkeeping, but because they are taxed and regulated into submission by do-gooder politicians who think they know better how to spend my hard earned income than I do.
Income redistribution is theft; it is highway robbery no matter how you look at. Why should Joe the Plumber’s taxes go up because his business is successful? His financial success is because of his hard work. Why raise taxes on the business owners once they are successful? Just so a nanny-stater can pat themselves on the back?
No poor person ever gave me a job.

Who’s Gary Graham? I’ve never heard of him and couldn’t care less if he was conservative, liberal or anywhere inbetween. I do know that he’s probably an actor… look at the length of his diatribe. Actor’s just have to try and grab the spotlight.
Excellent, Mr Graham. I have made these same complaints for years. I find it almost amusing how the liberals get completely defensive when you start pointing out some simple facts, one being after nearly 90 years of democrat rule, they have not actually delivered on these promises.
The sad thing for the nation is the democrats/liberals/socialists have had 90 or more years to slowly turn this country into a marxist state.
During the debate for the constitution with Madison and Patrick Henry, Henry was concerned about a government of what we have today occurring and Madison’s argument was there were two protections in the constitution to prevent this. One was the Feds having no ability to directly tax the population and Senators being elected by state legislatures. Madison rightly concluded that with no money to become despotic and the people through more accessible state governments could keep Senators in check. The Democrats removed both protections just over 90 years ago and we have today what Patrick Henry feared, a government run by career politicians with no interest in the actual country or its people.

Rick, as others have said, your unspoken assumption that government deserves more of our taxes to benevolently perform the functions that benefit all citizens is the slightest bit naive, not borne out by historical reality. You sound like you’ve never heard of corruption, oppression, incompetence, inefficiency, cronyism, nepotism, and other abuses and end results of concentrated power.

Amazingly well said! I’m not an American (I’m Canadian). While I largely agree with you Mr. Graham, there are some things said I don’t completely agree with. However, I can certainly agree completely with the spirit in which it was said. Freedom of speech much be defended, and it is indeed brave of you to speak out knowing the possible (probably) repercussions. I hope the repercussions are minor, and that there are still producers and directors in Hollywood who share a love for your constitution and the values it was founded on as you so obviously do. Nice piece. Of course, that’s what I’d say to that young Marine in Afgh. a month ago when 250 Taliban surrounded and moved to wipe out 50 Marines. Problem is these Devil Dogs had radios to call in air support but before they did, their sniper fired 25 rounds, taking out 25 Taliban. I’d tell that young man, “Nice piece and good shooting.”
I don’t do business on the phone or in public if it means dial one for English. I speak Spanish and I wouldn’t mine dialing 1 for Spanish if I was in Mexico, but while I am here in the USA, it’s default to English or I walk out the door. Damn right.

I support you and there are so many of us who want to hear more from conservative Hollywood. Your article reminds me of my favorite quote from Ronald Regan—- Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.

I always knew there were conservatives in Hollywood. I agree with every word. Liberals want to eleminate the traditions that have made our country great. When we loose those traditions (those of independent thinking, self reliance, hard work and enterprise) we become a third world nation and then sink into oblivion. It is great to see those in Hollywood who are conservative have an outlet to state their own case for not being the ilk of old communist lite libs like Babs, or young ones like Hayden Panettiere (no Hero she). Well done.

However, it is nice to see that there is someone else out there who has come to that conclusion. (It is unlikely to happen in the near future, when you consider the practice in the South in the former part of the twentieth century and the bad taste that leaves in peoples mouths.) I join with you in your beliefs and outrage, and with people like you to visibly stand up, perhaps we can turn things around.

Mr. Graham – you are spot on in your view of the natural progression of liberalism. Here are the 10 planks of the communist manifesto, look familiar?
1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
3. Abolition of all right of inheritance.
4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.

One story about panhandlers I know of came from one of the best professor/business persons I have ever had the pleasure to know.
He was on the interstate and saw one of those guys with a sign “will work for food” and he was going really fast and passed him. Anyway, he pulled off at a diner at the next exit. A little bit later, he saw the guy trudge by at a distance and off into some woods. A few minutes later, he pulled on the highway in a very nice and fairly new Caddy.
He was the type of fellow who would offer jobs to these people to work in construction. Most of them were not interested.
Very well said Gary. Perhaps you and Chuck Norris could team up and kick some liberal butts out of Hollywood.
Several good points were made by other posters too. I would love to see a new conservative film company start up somewhere. I would sure support it by watching their films.

The Boston Tea Party, etc. Just a gentle reminder that if you are living here you might want to crack open a few books and learn some history. Everything we have is based on individual achievement. The pursuit of happieness is a play on John Locke’s pursuit of property line. Americans have a right to opportunitys. Nothing should be given to you if you have two hands, two legs and a brain. Know why Bill Gates has so much money? Because he came up with a tool that he knew as a man of vision we would all need. Because of him I am talking to you on one of those tools. The light bulb, the phone…these exist because men had a place to explore and realize their dreams and to work. They had room to unleash their intellect what you see around you is nothingless than the most magnificent place on the planet. But to understand that you have to read our history. Get yourself emersed in it. We Americans have a great story to tell.
People generally write the way they speak (I teach English). You must be a vocal, expressive man. If you are an acquaintance of Breitbart, no wonder he used you right out of the box. Got my attention and my nod. Terrific and inspiring. Conservatives can be edgy, too.
My wife and I are 59 and 57 respectivly so we are able to go to a lot of movies. We saw a movie a day during the CHRISTmas holidays and averate two a week elsewhen.
We are good customers of Hollywood. If they don’t quit this hard slide to the left, we will end up going back to reading a lot of books and the hell with the likes of Sean Penn’s tribe.

Rick I suggest John Adams to start with, then American Sphinx which is a bio about Thomas Jefferson. An overview of the Revolutionary Generation called Patriots by AJ Languth is an excellent one to begin with. Thomas Jefferson: A life, is an excellent book. George Washington’s War, Founding Brothers. I am in the midst of reading the latest bios of Andrew Jackson, Samuel Adams (one of the most important figures in New England during the Revolution), and Teddy Roosevelt. You get an idea of what these men were like and their times and then the attitude that many of us still have is very apparent.
But start with Languth’s Patriots. I read it in three days. Also if you read McCullough’s award winning bio of John Adams like I said and watch the series.

I have recently started boycotting movies entirely. I will not attend any movies, nor buy any more DVD’s until I know the artists are conservative. So, Mr. Graham, if you have any films in the works, let us know what they are. If any of your fellow conservatives have films out or coming out, please let us know.
I am through supporting people who despise President Bush and just about everything that I value and admire.
So, until you and your fellow conservatives in Hollywood start promoting conservative films by conservative artists, I will be reading books by conservatives, like our founding fathers.

However, I was not responsible for designing it. When the marketing director showed me the first draft, it said “Happy Holidays!”. Knowing that the director was also a conservative, I mentioned that though I knew it wasn’t that person’s final decision to make, that it should be “Merry Christmas!”. The director agreed, and changed the wording. When the final draft was presented to ownership and sales staff, it was approved! The email went out proudly proclaiming Merry Christmas in both the subject line and the message body. We received not one single complaint. In fact, we received several complimetary replies.
The lesson: Sometimes it only takes one voice to make a change, step up folks, and use your voices!

I appreciate your article, agree with some of it, disagree with some, but would die protecting your right to express them in our great country. That being said – I’d invite you to direct some venom at the “white collar criminals” among us.
Think of the crooks who have stolen BILLIONS from us in recent years: Ken Lay, Lehman Brothers, AIG, Bernie Madoff, Milken, Kolwalski, Rigas, Ebbers, Halliburton, Enron, wow – the list is so long and unfathomable.
The GREED that was perpetuated by these people is worthy of your rage – they have wasted lives, resources, charities, you name it. The amount of money wasted by these criminals is gigantic compared with the waste for all of the homeless welfare recipients in your home state! I’ll choose to send my rage at these criminals who are educated, wealthy and know better. The poor, mentally deranged, uneducated beggars who are looking for a fix to escape their pain will get some sympathy and a pass, thank you.
How about paying school taxes in the state of Delaware, your son reports to the staff for two years about harassment, threats and assaults. You have monthly meetings over the violence with the staff, then the school tells you (in writing) that your son can not go to classes if a substitute is in the room and he can only use the nurse’s restroom in a very large elementary school in Wilmington DE. This sounded like segregation to us so we were forced to pull him from the public system and I can’t find a lawyer or any politician to help us. I believe my son was racially targeted for being white in an urban school. His friend, also white, left the same week we did.
Atlanta Joe, you can give a passto all those “poor, mentally deranged, uneducated beggars” if you would like, and if you can tell which ones they are. But I know for a fact that many of them are none of those things. Many of them are parasites, plain and simple. In my hometown, some of them live in fare more expensive accomodations than I can affors, after all, they can make a hefty amount of cash, and they pay NO taxes. Are there those who are truly deserving, of course, but they can be amply served by private charity, not forced taxation.
Oh, and just one little addition to my first post. I mentioned that the marketing person was a conservative, but I would have said the same thing had I not known. I might not have gotten the same result though…

As a long time fan of movies and good t.v., it has been frustrating to me to see what I consider an incredible level of intolerance against the right in Hollywood, so thanks for speaking up. I laugh at liberals who claim to be “bravely” speaking out against the country when in reality, it is their ticket to landing plum acting roles (Janeane Garofolo in “24″? The true brave people in Hollywood are those willing to admit they are not liberals.

everyone on this board needs to read it actually… it’s enlightening
…the saddest part of this spot-on, gritty essay on what it means to stand up for what you believe in is that probably not one in ten people who read this even know who you are, Mr. Graham. And that includes me.
I rarely watch TV or go to the movies anymore. And even though I earn my living as a composter/musician, I don’t even listen to pop music. I’ve become so tired of the bloated, pampered, self-important egos in the entertainment industry that it’s no longer worth the effort to separate their fictional lives and creative output from their truly ignorant polemic. Now the web is my source of entertainment and information. Hollywood and the media have truly changed my buying habits.
So while I’m sad to say, I don’t have a clue who you are, Mr. Graham, I’m happy to say your essay was a true breath of fresh air. Keep it up. Who knows, maybe someday all of us will learn to enjoy Hollywood again, maybe just in time to save it from becoming second sister to Bollywood.

I would like to add one thing to your sentiments; the takeover of our educational system by liberals.
Johnny doesn’t know the difference between the branches of government, nor can recite a single part of our Bill of Rights, nor can he tell you who our Vice-President is, but he sure as hell knows how to put a condom on a banana.
Johnny can’t make change from for a $6.99 bill when handed a $20 without the aid of a computer and will tell you with much assurance that WWII was the free African-American from slavery (yes, let’s begin the conversation about hyphenated Americans) but he surely knows enough to vote into the highest office in the land a person who spent 143 days in the Senate.
Since we’ve evolved into a society where Americans get their news from a night time comedian and more watch the finals of American Idol then vote; Hollywood should at least show both sides of the political aisle and stop trashing what is the best country on earth.

Two men are walking down the street. A panhandler comes up to them. The first Man, Chuck, pulls out a quarter and gives it to him. The second man, Lefty, pulls out a knife, holds it to Chuck’s neck, and tells him he needs to give the panhandler more, a lot more.
This happens year after year. Soon, Chuck despises not only Lefty, but the panhandler as well. His voluntary acts of charity dry up.
If you are mentally competent to understand the injustice in Lefty’s action, then you are competent to understand the argument against using the police power of the state to confiscate money (amounts based on their arbitrary choosing)to spend on whatever programs they choose are correct.
If you choose to give government more power to confiscate your earned money (by electing people who promise these things), then you deserve the eventual slavery that will occur.
Perfectly said! You’re not alone in your beliefs, there are alot of us out here that share your exact view. Unfortunately, enough of us haven’t woken up yet to see whats happening here in the USA. Hopefully, before we reach the point of no return, we will, en masse, wake up and start taking corrective action. If not, we’ll get what we deserve for our lack of interest in self preservation…..
I hope you don’t see any repercussions from those that control your industry, chances are you probably will, they’re a vindictive bunch from what I see and read. One small thing we, as “Right” thinking Americans can do, is the same thing that I suspect the Hollywood Left would do to you. Blacklist vocal libs in our own life. Those of you who own a business, find a way to weed out the libs in your organisation. Does the person who does your hair spew too much lefty paplum? find someone else. There are many ways we as Conservatives can let the left know that we are a viable economic force and let them see what they stand to lose when we stop inter-acting with them. By and large, conservatives still control the majority of small business’s, with that comes employment (of lefties), funds spent on supplies and overhead and so on. If we concentrate on keeping our wealth within our own circle, we can do one of two things. Cause a mass epiphany among the libs, let them see that they need us way more than we need them, or starve the bastards out. Either is cool with me!

If the formerly middle class are wandering the streets looking for work and food in the next year or so, you be able to thank our new president and and Democratic controlled Congress and Senate. The only way to ensure it does not happen is to stop government’s wasteful spending and to cut taxes to the rich, yes the rich. You know why? Because they happen to bear the biggest burden of taxes in this country. AND, they also happen to be the ones who PRODUCE in this country making it the richest (and the most generous) country in the world. Cut their taxes, they will have the confidence to produce more, hire more, create more opportunities for others and make more for themselves so that they can pay even MORE taxes to the federal coffers. It is truly nothing more than common sense and there’s no argument than can refute it. It will be the only way we will get out of this bailout mess. The bailouts must stop. Government wasteful spending must stop. The fear about our ecomony right now is due to knowing that these bail-outs will have to be paid for, and by whom? US. If Obama gets his way with his “make work” programs and more government spending ie., “the New Deal II”, we will decline economically like we saw in the Depression. Possibly even much worse.

I certainly hope that your fury against the left will cause you to start some form of grass-roots organization to collect like minded thinkers, and aid in educating the ignorant. My life’s story is fascinating. I was proudly born in the US to Colombian parents. I started my own business, and 4 years ago, one of my employees that had a mental condition I was unaware of, required medication he stopped taking. He stabbed me 48 times and got me in the face with a machete. I died twice on the table and came back. Not once did I ask for any assistance from the government for this. My business is still very much in operation. I’ve had many other near misses. The point being that I’m an American and my life’s story proves that an individual must be allowed to overcome adversity, not be coddled and nannied thru life. Your words state exactly how I see us now.

what’s with you people? why the need to fight? what happened to reasoning, civil discourse, discussion, healthy debate? The GOP, my former party, has gone from an intellectual, bright, ideas-driven party, (think George Will, William Buckley) to an emotional, knuckle-dragging, I-can-yell-louder than you party (think Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh) that is rapidly losing relevance in this country.
Check the election stats and the country’s demographics. Hispanics and Blacks are NOT feeling the love from the GOP. These two groups are the MAJORITY in cities like NYC, Miami, Chicago, LA, Houston, etc.
The anti-immigrant stance, the mocking of Obama’s race and name, and a myriad of racist remarks, poor jokes, and overall intolerance displayed by people like Mr Graham only serve to alienate the GOP to serve rural, uneducated whites. It will be a long time before there is another GOP president in my opinion. Until we can be tolerant enough to accept a diversity of opinion and color and culture in the party, the dems are gonna run the show. woe be unto us…

Guess people who live in a town that was built below sea level and kept re-electing corrupt local politicians who stole nearly every dime of the money that kept getting sent to improve their local levies and then decided to stay put after being repeatedly warned of a huge hurricane heading there way are worth putting on a multitude of star studded gala’s for, but I have as of yet not seen a single one dedicated to raising money to send a little something overseas to the brave men and women who volunteered to risk their lives to protect us and our way of life.

You’ve sparked some hope in the hearts of my husband and myself…something sorely lacking since election night. We are a deployed military family and often feel like our country (back home) is slipping further and further away from us. We’ve spoken privately of the state of the country we love, and whether or not we’ll even recognize it, when we can finally return home. I pray this glorious wave of “common sense” permeates throughout our “shining city on a hill” and we come home to the land of the free and the home of the brave again.

“Conservatives” have been defined by the left. It’s time we did some defining of ourselves. Conservatives love their country. Conservatives don’t want Obama’s change (which, in case y’all haven’t figured out is socialism). We want to maintain the spirit of the Founders’ beliefs in individual liberty and a government that doesn’t hamper that liberty. With liberty and freedom all is possible. Government creates nothing but dependents. One of my favorite lines: “A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.”
Those naive enough to put faith in government instead of themselves and their neighbors don’t have the American spirit. Educate yourselves if you expect to live in a free nation.

I have been really disheartened by some of the rederick and slush coming out of Hollywood of late. It is truly a wonderful thing to see that there is still a man that ranks with the Reagan “greats”. The Hollywood platform is probably one of the most influential groups of people in this country and many of our young people try to emulate them as heros. I see a man here that could be “Hero” to listen to. Thanks for the shot of HOPE for Hollywood!
It’s about time someone said it. I think Rush’s after the election statement is spot on. He said we have to spot trying to be nice to liberals because what has nice ever gotten us. Time to stand up. Reading some of the liberal replies to the piece I challenge these liberals to admit that the actions of the left for the past 8 years were vile and beyond the pale. None of them will because it’s the old double standard of them being able to say anything they want but anyone else is “attacking their right of free speech” the only thing good about the next fours years is knowing that liberals have a glass jaw and watching them shriek as Obama gets taken to task.

We have re-elected much of the 100 day congress that have been a major contributor to much of our nation’s woes. Let’s hope Ms. Pelosi will get her compass recalibrated and actually lead the U.S. back to solid ground. The Hollywood left has courted politians like a love struck 13 year old. Doesn’t matter if you did or didn’t vote for Pres.-elect Obama. Let’s not be like the Bush bashers that pinned every ill uder the sun on him. Their is way too much blame to go around!
Obama is our next President. So let’s pray for his success and not failure. If he loses, we as a nation loses. Hopefully his ultra left views are now being tempered as he becomes prive to the confidential intel that our president receives. When I say “Happy Holidays,” I am lumping the Christmas and New Year holidays together. It saves time. It also shows respect to my Jewish and Hindu friends who are most assuredly not celebrating Christmas. It seems to me that Jesus encouraged that sort of loving approach when dealing with one’s neighbors.
In my business, I wish my customers “Happy Holidays” because I have no way of knowing what faith they practiced, if at all. As with the “English” comments, it is not in the best interest of my business to impose my religious beliefs on them. I run a software consulting firm, not a Christian bookstore.

The SC completely perverted the concept of eminent domain on that one, and essentially crippled the concept of private property in the USA.
The rest of those planks look like the first nine or ten planned pieces of legislation in skeletor pelosi’s upcoming congress. Those would be S.1 through S.10 for those keeping score at home.

I presume he is making an argument that the Republicans lost both houses of Congress and the Presidency. That being said, he makes the bone-headed mistake that conservatives are necessarily Republicans. Certainly Bush and many other Republicans in Congress are not conservative. I am not and never have been a member of the Republican Party. However, the Republicans lost precisely because many of them abandoned their conservativism and embraced a more “liberal” (a wider?) stance.

I personally believe Dr. Spock should have been treated as a criminal; the ACLU should now be disbanded as it truly accomplished all that was necessary for which I thank them but now they have gone way overboard; unions are in the same category now raping and pillaging this nation; and, “women” don’t need a movement as we Americans now ALL know our rights. We are a nation of “services” having lost our way in that we no longer produce, manufacture or grow most of our daily necessities of life but rather depend upon other countries. Gary, I had just written the following to one friend when your letter was forwarded to me by another friend:
Are you familiar with the Jewish “year of jubilee” concept? The way I
understand it, it was sort of a “restore to default” button they would press every 50th year.

I think America would now benefit from some aspects of this concept right now. For instance:
- beginning Jan 1st, 2010 the following could occur
1. All legal precidents are ersased permanently; people in prison serve out their existing sentence
2. We return to the GOLD standard; stocks split to get back to reasonable amounts
3. 2 years of Conscripted military service is enacted for all males who have not otherwised served their Nation; men who are 4F go into the CCC or some other homeland deal; to deal with the influx of federal employees, for every young man who is conscripted, 1 existing federal employee is laid off..we didn’t need them anyway; Step 3 just solved our recruiting, gang and skill set problem all in one step.
4. Child labor laws are made reasonable so that 12 year old boys and girls can work on the farms again, like I did 5. Corporal punishment is returned to the public schools; vouchers are enacted and schools which lose enrollment because they are inept are closed.
Students who are disrepectful, use drugs, etc…are kicked out of school.
6. Welfare & unemployment are both phased out over a 2 year period. Social Security is paid out to all people age 60 by 1/1/10, then is paid back to all who paid into it, then it is extinguished…like it will be anyway. We return to the wonderful concept of “families” taking care of their own.
7. Trade laws are created such that it is equal. You tax our stuff, we tax yours.
8. Illegal immigrants are returned to their country of origin at that country’s expense, extracted via trade tarrifs. Legal immigrants are given an incentive for obeying our laws. We want you here, legally.
9. The IRS is canned. The IRS Code is canned. In it’s place we simply
have a flat tax on income, with no deductions, etc.
10. Prisons become work programs…chain gangs or otherwise. They operate as profit centers and pay for themselves, and are no fun.
11. Affirmative action goes away; as do all quotas. We move to a merit based system which is color & gender blind. Women are taken out of combat and positions such as police or firemen, UNLESS they can pass the same physical standards the guys USED to pass, before they LOWERED the standards. It’s that simple. No more lables of “minority” or “protected class.”
12. Children are required to study (and pass) U.S. History. They are not
allowed to graduate as ignorant, entitlement-minded citizens anymore. This one thing would probably fix most problems.

But one thing you conservatives need to be aware about within your own ranks is a tendency towards social fascism (read: Franco and Spain, rather than) while too many liberals seem to be tending towards fiscal socialism rather than social liberalism.
Being calm would go a long way to lending more credibility rather than ridiculousness to your rants. Try it. Maybe use MS Word and write a few drafts. Pretend you’re an academic; conservatives exist there too, you know.

I ran across this article and to be honest, this is why we have so many issues with the media today.
I enjoy reading George Will, I find much of what he has to say to be completely against what I believe but I enjoy reading him. Why do I? Because he treats those who disagree with him with respect. Same goes with William Safire who is now retired for the most part and some of the other members of the right wing punditry. They explain their positions without resorting to vulgarity. Columns like this one serve no purpose than to encourage those who do not actually take the time to read or learn about why anything happens in this country to avoid once again taking the time to read or learn about why our country does the things we do.

I hope every one on this site had a Happy Holiday! I have to admit I sure get fed up having to select “english” when I use the phone or an ATM but I sure appreciate having the choice when I am overseas and need to use the phone or an ATM. A short response about “Happy Holidays” to JBL in Maine
Your business decision to say “Happy Holidays” so as not to offend anyone really just comes off as either non-descript or undecided. It is not even a really true emotional expression and does nothing but take away from the intent.
If I say to you “Merry Christmas” I am saying that in the name of Jesus I wish you happiness and good will. Sure, I am giving away my religeous bent but I don’t need to feel bad about that. As a matter of fact I feel good that not only do I wish you well but I wish you well from my heart and faith.
The same holds true if a Jewish person says “Happy Chanukah” to me. He is expressing his belief and wishing me well based on that. I am not offended because I know it is heartfelt and I respect that.
I would truly prefer if all of us wished others well based on our own beliefs. It would be more personal and more genuine.
“Happy Holidays” under the guise of inclusiveness really just displays a non-heartfelt sentiment and doesn’t add but subtracts from any real truly emotional well meaning or expression of the holiday.
It’s time to change the way we feel about our religions in this country. Especially Christianity. Christians have nothing to be ashamed about.
Jesus is part of the Muslim religion also. I really don’t think a Muslim would be offended by wishing well in his name.
If you are an atheist then Christmas has no meaning anyway (hence no holiday)so why would you be offended? It is certainly OK with me that you have no faith so I don’t see how you would be offended if I do.
I think a great business decision would be to wish “Merry Christmas” at Christmas time, “Happy Chanukah” at Chanukah and “Happy New Year” at the New Year. It says alot more about your character and really is much more heartfelt and sincere than “Happy Holidays”. Thats the type of term we used to call a “cop-out”.

You bring up an interesting issue. Who 30 years ago was in control of Hollywood? It was if I remember a place where everybody was welcome. Then it slowly changed. As the old people died, retired or became President’s of the United States etc. the newbies, Redfords, Streisands, etc. came into their own. THey now have control over the studios, the money, everything. If you do not understand what Gary was saying then maybe you need to revisit your educational roots, go grade by grade starting with Kindergarten.
Its one thing to ask a question, but, to say something so silly with no idea what Hollywood was like 30, 40, 50 years ago is ridiculous. Tell you what my friend, buy a book called Red Star Over Hollywood. Its a bit more of a read than I am sure you are used to but you know a guy has to start somewhere. So go to it. And please it you bring up golden age actors for crying out loud remind yourself that things were far different decades ago. Please. CHarleton Heston was no “conservative”. But he was a real Liberal. It will be hard to watch one of my favorite shows Alien Nation again, knowing this guy, playing a rough-and-tumble cop, is actually a whiny, culture-of-victimhood, start-a-war-and-send-everyone-else-but-me-to-die-while-I-stay-home-and-write-angry-columns-about-Spanish-options-on-automated-phone-trees-type cowardly neocon. It kind of ruins the character.
Although on the plus side, it won’t be as bad as it is with Arnold, since this guy was only ever in one thing that was any good.

Well we have all seen what 8 years of conservative government produces: the worst recession since the 1930s, over a million jobs lost in the past year, a housing collapse, stock market crash, and credit crisis. Conservative government produced a doubling of the national debt to over $10 trillion and an unnecessary Iraq war costing nearly $1 trillion and 35,000 dead or wounded U.S. troops.
The American people clearly said what they thought of conservative governing on November 4, 2009.

I love the concept for this website. Time to fight back against the culture by using the tools of culture. I often noted that, in the 40s and 50s, Hollywood movies were mostly patriotic, positive, and promoted the ideals of America.
They were done tastefully and artistically, and we were entertained. But then the sixties brought in the cultural revolution with those lazy, self-righteous boomers who had everything given to them, but they decided to have a tantrum, and we’ve been suffering for it ever since.

Bravo. I suspect that there are far more closet conservatives in Hollywood than closet queens. It’s almost a social suicide situation to declare oneself as a conservative in that neck of the woods. And what is worse, we in the vast flyover states are INUNDATED with these preachy, better than thou sermons from pampered celebrities who dare to tell us how to live our lives. Why should I worry one smidgen about my much maligned “carbon footprint” when Babs Streisand has a house that would hold Six of mine. I think the most telling moment in this whole debate was when I listened to Daryll Hannah on the radio discussing Global Warming. The commentator asked her that if Al Gore was so concerned about saving the planet, if it wouldn’t be better for him to fly commercial. Her response was “but he has important speeches to make.” And there you have it. We in the flyover states don’t have anything important to do. Getting to work-nope. Taking kids to school-forget it. Heating or cooling the house-not important. All that is important is that California, and especially Hollywood, is safe. I experienced the narrow mindset of Cali a few years ago when I visited. The news doesn’t seem to exist past the Cali border. There may be a rare mention of New York or London, but Chicago, Houston, Miami and St. Louis simply don’t matter. And if you look at the election map on the county by county site, you would see that the voting clustered around urban centers. This wasn’t a mandate-it was a very manipulative political operation. And down the road, as the economy shrinks and the movie revenue goes down yet again, I wonder how many hasbeens will clutter the Malibu shoreline. BTW-I don’t plan on seeing “Milk” or any of the other contrived pieces of propaganda that are designed to both punish middle America and educate us. As far as the treacherous outing of a covert agent is concerned, feast your eyes on this little tidbit.
The first President Bush as CIA director, and from 1981 as vice president, campaigned to make naming names illegal. That law — the Intelligence Identity Protection Act — was passed in 1982.
Since then, any government official with access to classified information who discloses the identity of a covert agent without authorization is subject to 10 years in prison and $50,000 in fines.
Everyone involved in the outing of Valerie Plame should have to pay the price. Bush says so.

A new congressional report is belatedly confirming what many have long known: that the White House and in particular then White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales, lied to Congress in 2004 when he told them the Bush administration was not repeatedly warned by the CIA not to make the claim that Saddam had tried to buy uranium ore from Niger.
What is astonishing about this report, which documents that the CIA at least four times tried to prevent Bush and other top officials from presenting that lie to Congress and the American public in the run-up to the Iraq invasion, is not that it documents what has long been known, but that Congress and the corporate media are still pretending that the claim itself was an acceptable justification for launching a war.
Set aside for the moment the fact that the claim that Saddam Hussein had tried to buy uranium ore (so-called yellowcake) from the desert nation of Niger was based upon forged documents which were almost certainly the work of Defense Department hacks in the Rumsfeld/Cheney-created Office of Special Plans (see my book The Case for Impeachment). Even if this fraudulent deal had been real, how on earth could it have been used as it was by President Bush and Vice President Cheney to justify an invasion of Iraq?
Consider that what was being asserted was that Iraq had attempted (not even succeeded!) to buy 400 tons of uranium ore. This claim was used by President Bush, in his Jan. 20, 2003 State of the Union address, to argue that Iraq had a nuclear weapons program. But in the case of a country that does not have a nuclear weapon, a program is years away, perhaps a decade or more away, from the reality of having a usable weapon. Gee whiz, I wonder what this means. The yellow cake uranium moved to Canada because of the dangerously unstable situation in Iraq had been known about for years.Tuwaitha and an adjacent research facility were well known for decades as the centerpiece of Saddam’s nuclear efforts.
Israeli warplanes bombed a reactor project at the site in 1981. Later, U.N. inspectors documented and safeguarded the yellowcake, which had been stored in aging drums and containers since before the 1991 Gulf War. There was no evidence of any yellowcake dating from after 1991, the official said.
U.S. and Iraqi forces have guarded the 23,000-acre site — surrounded by huge sand berms — following a wave of looting after Saddam’s fall that included villagers toting away yellowcake storage barrels for use as drinking water cisterns.
Yellowcake is obtained by using various solutions to leach out uranium from raw ore and can have a corn meal-like color and consistency. It poses no severe risk if stored and sealed properly. But exposure carries well-documented health concerns associated with heavy metals such as damage to internal organs, experts say. Golly, why did not Bush 41 remove the yellow cake if it was being processed for nuclear weapons. Twist the facts to suit your needs, warmongers.
I’ve been struggling with an inconsistency that maybe some folks can weigh in on. We see so many worldviews falling into the following combinations:
1) market economies & religion (i.e. conservatives)
2) socialism & science (i.e. liberals)
It seems to me that worldviews should, instead, fall into the following categories:
1) market economies & science/secular
2) socialism & religion
Why? Because free-market economies evolve (i.e. increase productivity/create wealth/expand the pie) over time because individuals are free to tinker with new ideas. The ideas are tested in the marketplace. Good ideas survive and proliferate, while the bad ideas die off. Scientific knowledge evolves in a similar fashion as the new theories are proposed and tested, then rejected or expanded upon. Of course, the theory that species themselves evolved falls into this category.
Socialism, on the other hand, calls for an individual to act for the benefit an undefined entity (e.g. “society”) in return for some unknowable future benefit (e.g. “Utopia”). It seems to me that religion is similar with “society” and “Utopia” replaced by “God” and “Heaven” respectively.
So why don’t we see more free-market/secular worldviews?
Dear Steph, Valerie Plame was working on the nuclear programs in Iran. She had several people involved in the program suppling information. Since she was revealed as working for the CIA, our knowledge and inside information about Iran’s intentions are non-existent. Take a wild guess what happened to her informants and their families. Who cares about them. Oh that’s right they were infidels.

Someone once said to me “What are we going to do about the Supreme Court?” to which I responded, “Win a Presidential election and then you get to appoint the justices”. So I might say to you Mr. Gary if you are unhappy about how things are going in Hollywood or the country, try winning an election or persuading your fellow Hollywood types of the value of your ideas. I disagree with you on Climate Change, though, but you’ve got vigor and spirit and I hope the Republicans listen to you and get it together. My fellow estranged Democrats and I considered Sarah Palin a great shot in the arm. After the sluggishness of Obama, people are going to be begging for her. The leftists hate women who are tough. In fact, because the left promotes the soft, cerebral men as their leaders, they especially hate visceral people and women who have any strength.
The Republicans have no idea how much an opportunity they have to take back the country. They just need to broaden their two-issue message beyond just abortion and gay marriage. (That’s the other thing I disagree with Republicans on – why must gays be restricted to the domain of promiscuity? They should make a commitment and get married. Nothing new here, apparently if it’s a holly wood voice it gets more attention. I’m a conservative, I agree with what this fellow is saying, if not the tone in which he says it. What absolutely boggles the mind is how that people on the left think that only people on the right are myopic, small minded, angry, racist, ignorant, etc. People on the right and left are of varying intelligence, education, temperment, and we will never all agree on how to move forward. Stop the finger pointing, look at each article, post, comment political or otherwise on the basis of merit, not on whether or not you agree with it.

Rick, you like most of the liberal left, miss the point about taxes.
First of all, not wanting to pay taxes is “un-American?” Someone explain that to me… our Founding Fathers went to war with Britain over taxation without representation.
That being said, conservatives aren’t against taxes in general (I believe Gary Graham said he was mad that Democrats were “raising” his taxes). We understand that the government has to raise revenue to pay for certain things: national defense, infrastructure, and public works like water and utilities. But where is it written that I should have to pay a soda tax, or a tax increase to give a rebate to someone who doesn’t even pay taxes.
That is the problem with the left. They’d rather redistribute others’ wealth instead of allowing people to keep their own wealth. If you are able to keep more of your own wealth, you can help others who aren’t as fortunate through personal charity, or more likely, by hiring them to work in your business.
Socialism inevitably leads to serfdom for all of us…

If I can dare to use a Tigerism. “You are the man!” I already decided that 2009 was going to be a great year no matter what the “Messiah” and his cronies decided to try and do to our great country. Reading your article just re-inforces that decision and urges me on to fight everyday against the those who wish to rescind the freedoms that our forefathers fought so hard and died for.
It might take me another year or two but a few of my associates and I are working on a fund designed specifically to finance and produce films with conservative actors, producers, stage hands, etc. We are going to fight fire with napalm. The films will be virally marketed with a big “C” attached to it. They won’t necessarily push views but that way the public will know who their hard earned dollars are going to Hope you aren’t too busy at that time and can take part in the first movie.

Mr. Graham! Best article I’ve read in a long time. We are going to see what Obama is made of, and I think he is made of jello. Easy conformed to what person he faces. It was a sad day November 4, when people who could not read went and voted our next Commander and Chief. People who did not know who Bill Ayers was, or Rev. Wright. Citizens, they are, but I do not see anywhere in the Bill of Rights that you have the right to vote. There should be a questionaire you must fill out before you can vote with simple questions; perhaps how many states there are in the US? Obama would miss that one. And you should receive a passing score of 70 in order to vote. I think McCain would have won if that were the case. I saw an article about Conservatives in Hollywood…and you bet your butt I will be going to see their movies, and perhaps none of the others. I will not support an industry that is so out of touch with working Americans (much like most of our Politicans). They do not vote in our favor, or else the bailout would never have happened. I love that our country is becoming an handout nation! What’s next…everyone works, if you are a factory worker or a CEO, you all get the same? This has it all, every defect of the human mind is on display, one after the other. Here we have the invention of a monolithic “liberal” enemy, one that is said to comprise little more than a collection of personality defects, all of them shared by all who wear the label. Here we have debate and criticism criticized as soft or treasonous. Here we have a description of a liberal view that no sane liberal subscribes to or has ever subscribed to. Here we have a collection of snippets of half-views, taken out of context and wrapped together as if it were a platform that somebody actually believes in, then eviscerated because of its obvious stupidity. Here we have an author criticizing reasonable sensitivity to others — even on something so personal as religious holiday observance — as if it were a sign of the fall of man for someone to say happy holidays to his Jewish or atheist friends. And here we have a whacky and disconnected and basically autistic series of right-wing platitudes that would make any responsible human look in the mirror and immediately seek therapy. WOW! This post has it all — assinine American triumphalism, the yearning for the simple pastoral life of the 17th Century, the distortion of history and the record of human progress and regress to fit a pre-existing political emotion (Nazis were somewhat right-wing, by the way, Mr. Graham), the utter lack of that self-awareness through which many adults find some level of empathy for others and some level of introspection for themselves, the entire rejection of any conception of a complex society and a diversity of the population, and of course, a supposedly god-based worldview where god is defined as the pastor of “people like us”.

One can love America and also -condemn waterboarding, -pay taxes agreeably if not happily, -support government solutions to large complex problems, -accept that some people communicate better in Spanish, -understand that the christian god is not the only god that people believe in, -reject the idea that Americans should die in the Middle East, -accept the science that shows we have a climate problem, -accept science generally as a better indicator of facts than our own emotions or diatribes. Yes, no doubt, this is a pissed off dude. I would say some level of minimal education, socialization, and a short course of therapy might work wonders here. First things first: Mr. Graham, you are a great actor and a great American. I cannot wait to share this article with family members who’ve admired you for the former, but didn’t know about the latter.
Joe the Liberal: Fascism is a system of government in which everything and everyone in censored and in which the government has total control over the lives of its people. It is also a system under which dissidents are silenced, permanently. They are killed, or at best sent to “re-education camps” where they serve as slave labor. Journalists who don’t toe the party line are first to go. Please, point out some examples of jailed journalists or murdered detractors. Prove your case.
One other thing: even the New York Times eventually admitted that every recount in Florida showed Bush the winner in 2000. Republicans are not the ones who are caught time and time again trying to rig elections.

We have extremes on both sides. There are conservative/Christians who refuse to celebrate Christmas at all because it is reflective of pagan celebrations. Regarding your comment that we should have voter testing, I would add that just like a corporation if you don’t own any shares, you don’t vote. In other words if one does not pay any net taxes, then they should have no say in how the taxes are spent, no vote.

The only problem I see with it is that you packed so much into it that the liberal short attention span crowd will not read the whole thing, or just not read it at all and let others comments and excerpts drive their opinion about what you wrote.
Sadly we live in an era of soundbites. When ideas are expressed in the written word that have to be tailored to suit that style, short simple and dumbed down as much as possible.
Like others I’m glad to see another conservative voice in Hollywood speak out. I’m tired of the liberal elites in entertainment dominating the spot light and using McCarthy style tactics against conservatives in entertainment who dare to express themselves.
I hope you are not outcast for expressing your opinion, but if you are as others have suggested maybe a new door is open for you in politics.
Seriously, get over the War on Christmas crap. 99.9% of the people in this country don’t care what they are wished, and have no problem wishing the same back. They smile and move on.
We have extremes on both sides. There are conservative/Christians who refuse to celebrate Christmas at all because it is reflective of pagan celebrations. You have some who refuse to say “thank you” after someone says “bless you” when they sneeze. I don’t hear you and your buddies scream and shout about them.

Yes, America does mostly good things, but it does a few bad things too (no one’s perfect, but at least accept it). Remember those Abu Ghraib photos? Not torture? And what about the massive number of civilians killed in “accidental” hits in Iraq and Afghanistan – the missiles weren’t so accurate then, were they? And what about not saying a word to dictatorial, hostile, and evil regimes like Saudi Arabia – who we’ve made our best friends and ignore all the hate and violence they are spreading across the world (remember, 15 of the 19 terrorists on 9/11 were Saudi – none were Irani, Iraqi, or Afghani). America and Americans make mostly good choices, but some bad ones that have some bad consequences.
Finally…yes, you are right. Time to get over the hate. Hopefully conservatives will finally stop hating science, education, the Constitution, peace, humanity, civil liberties, and civil rights. Gary, thanks for giving those of us outside of the entertainment industry a reason to still have hope that the good will one day overcome the evil who have left their stain on the fabric of Hollywood and all of America.
By the way, my wife is about to turn 31, has a B.S. and a Masters degree, but left her ten year career in higher education a year ago and enlisted in the Army because, in her own words, “it was time to give back and serve my country.” The recruiters expected and encouraged her to enter officer training since her education clearly qualified her for that. She went enlisted instead, enduring being treated like a grunt through Basic Training, AIT (job specific training), and now in her job here in D.C.
She answers to higher ranking men who are typically younger and almost always much less educated. She wakes up every workday at 5:15 and endures a long commute into D.C. so she can make it to PT (physical training) where they run 4+ miles (she’s NOT a runner) and does more sit-ups and push-ups than you or I could ever hope to do just to keep her job. The mornings are dark and typically in the 20’s or 30’s. But other than the aches and pains that come with being a 30-something, she never complains because it’s her duty.
It’s likely that one day she’ll get sent to Iraq or Afghanistan. We don’t talk about it much, and I’ve noticed she doesn’t like watching movies about the war much anymore. Because in the back of her mind and mine we realize that when that day comes, our lives will probably never be the same. But I know that her love and mine for our country is greater than our fear of what might happen if good men and women stopped fighting for this country and the freedoms we all enjoy.
I am proud of my wife. She puts on an Army uniform every day so that both conservatives and liberals, freedom lovers and freedom haters, can live in peace both here and abroad. And I’m proud of you, Gary, for having the balls to say what needs to be said more often by those of us who still believe in America and are willing to risk our lives and our livelihoods to defend our freedom and our great nation wherever God has placed us.

If your government schooling will allow you do the math on how much better people feel about President Bush than a demolib controlled congress. LOL
If you want to see which group is the most tolerant try the following:
1) Go up to an avowed conservative and tell them that you do not agree with their view on some subject – War, abortion, homosexuals, global warming… choose as many as you want.
2) Now do the same to a liberal. If you do not believe you can find any then go to almost any college campus or news agency.
Observe how they react to the situation. I am sure that you will find extremists if you look hard enough. Try being a conservative in a school environment and see how the people treat you. The experiment that 8th grader did where she wore a McCain t-shirt one day and an Obama t-shirt the next day was enlightening about just how tolerance works.

Same with the Dixie Chicks. I don’t know of liberals organizing “Gary Graham DVD Bonfires” and calling whatever station “Alien Nation” is on threatening to boycott if they don’t take him and his show off the air, and I certainly don’t know about any concerted effort by the corporation that owns the station to launch a massive and very public (and scary) anti-Gary Graham crusade.

He is a recipient of the John Bates Clark Medal (1979) and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences (2001). He is also the former Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank. What Joe has to offer about the total cost of the adventure in Iraq should be sobering to those whose fathers worked two jobs and also those who are working one job if available with 10% unemployment. Joe who has a trifle more expertise in economics than even you puts the eventual Iraq war debt at THREE TRILLION DOLLARS. Gosh darn that dastardly Clinton. Cuomo should hang his head in shame. Who the f%$k cares, liberalism or conservatism, you wrote an entire article to see if your piss is higher than the other.. I agreed to 90% of your article, and poetic it was indeed. But flaws in your thinking there are, for example, just because we didn’t nuke the entire middle east, does not mean it wasn’t an imperialistic move. Logic does not dictate imperialism = nuke a region.
But, as with any sort of movement, there are those who take it to the extreme, it happens with liberalism, and it happens with conservatism.

In a nutshell, if the private banks wanted to have availability to Fannie/Freddie, they would need to qualify these folks that SHOULD NOT have been qualified. Cost structure, benefit structure, marketing and sales structures….the whole damn model. I really don’t care what the CEO makes and I don’t care that the line worker makes $70/hr with benefits. If the model doesn’t get changed, don’t put taxpayer money in. Period.
Mr. Graham has made good points. He’s obviously struck a cord with the libs that continue to not understand his perspective. Liberals don’t want individuality. They want us to blend in and be happy. Sorry. That’s not the real world we live in. And all this talk about the war in Iraq. The American Public will never hear a positive thing coming out that country through the liberal media because feel good stories don’t sell. If the American military tortured some feel good Jihadist and saved just ONE innocent life…then it was worth it and it should be done every time. Every one of the military lives lost in this war is and always will be a tragedy. I want to send my thanks to all the military personnel that continue to provide me the opportunity and security to live in the greatest land of all. Why is it that you libs aren’t outraged at the number of people that were killed in Detroit in 2008? Or Washington, D.C.? It’s safer to walk down the streets of Baghdad than Detroit based upon these numbers. Yeah, I know….We shouldn’t be in Iraq. Didn’t the USA removed on the most miserable human ever to walk the face of the earth? At least that’s what the media seemed to report. Enough of my own rant. I’ve never watched or seen any of your work, Mr. Graham, but thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. The liberal drones are there now. We’ll be watching the Messiah, along with Queen Nancy and King Harry to see how these people will enrich our lives.

I look forward to hearing much more from you, because I am a Democrat, and I generally like it when Republicans and conservatives lose elections. And lose them you have, and will, with this kind of intolerant and angry rhetoric. Why? Because it turns lots of people off. And not just Democrats, but independents too. Yes, reality hurts, especially when you realize that Bush and the Republicans managed to double the national debt by cutting taxes while increasing the cost of government. I remember when conservatives wanted balanced budgets, but that was a long time ago.

As a 72 yr old, I have lived in many countries & thru many wars–starting with WWII. I am still proud to say “I am an American”, but with so many that means nothing and wrenches my heart. There are a few entertainers that speak out (Toby Keith, Gary Sinese, etc)but Gary Graham takes each important subject in our lives and says it the way it should be said. FTS! I believe in helping each other and living the good Christian life AND ending the lives of those who see violence & murder as the way to reach heaven. Thanks Gary for saying it for us.

The Dems/Clintons in 1994 started/created the current Fannie and Freddie fiasco by FORCING banks, under threat of legal action, to make loans (which we now call subprime, bad paper, etc) to the unqualified, even forcing the banks to consider welfare and food stamps as sources of income on mortgage applications. When the banks balked at that, because you know they assess this thing called RISK for a living and so flipped the bird to the Clinton administration, in the Dems came with their slush fund F&F and said we’ll GUARANTEE those loans. That was the spark RIGHT THERE that finally blew up in 2008. So your contention that they only “owned” 6% is a complete non-sequitor because they GUARANTEED most of the bad paper. We had a situation where profits were privatized and losses socialized and the housing bubble was born.
The repubs get blame in that they were spineless cowards who wouldn’t stand up to the Dems for fear of being called “racist” or “making war” on the poor. Wall Street gets balme in that once pandora’s box was opened via the loan guarantees, they were like kids in a candy store.
In 2005 during a congressional meeting on F&F’s solvency (look it up on youtube), Barney Frank (amongst others)called (and hinted racism) the idea from the Repubs that F&F were in trouble was in fact a “general shibboleth”, in this context meaning a false rumor. Three years later it comes crashing down because of his (and other Dems like Dodd) poor and corrupt leadership and they get put in charge of fixing it?? And, like you, play the roll of victim?! WTF???!! Well they know all they have to say is “Corporate Greed” and the ignorant masses, you know the Democrat base, just eat it up and vote accordingly thus consolidating Dem power…
Oh and are you aware that in the mid 90’s when this was all blossoming, Barney Frank’s boyfriend, Herb Moses, was the head of F&F while Frank was on the house banking committee?? Oh wait, that’s homophobic of me, nevermind. Since it’s the repubs fault TIB, why hasn’t good ole boy Frank called them up on the hill for their grilling???
And why some repubs voted for the bail-out and MOST of the Dems did, check to see who didn’t in the repub party…hint it was the conservatives.

You’re a true American, May God Bless you always. What you should do is move here to the Mid-West and open a movie studio here. You start making movies for real Americans, you know, where we’re the good-guys, and the good ol’ USA is a great place to be.
