What a Difference a Year Makes
by Frank DeMartiniIt is pretty much the end of 2009. It is also the end of the first decade of the Millennium. Hard to believe that we’ve gone through ten years since the Y2K scare. Also, hard to believe we had three different presidents since the turn of the Millennium: One that was impeached, one that retired extremely unpopular and one that is becoming extremely unpopular.

Barack Hussein Obama has been president for 11 months. So, this year is his for all its good and bad. There is no doubt about that. When he became President, the entire world was energized. America had elected a new savior. He was young, energetic and promised hope and change. And, he is the first African American President in US history. All of the scars of the past had disappeared. Per the Progressives, we had become a true shining city on the hill. The Republican Party was in deep trouble.
Now, that we have had him as President for one year, nothing has changed and the hope is dimming by the minute. His first year in office has been notable for basically one thing: he has accomplished nothing. Gitmo is still operating. Health Care Reform may or may not happen. Cap and Trade is effectively dead (especially in light of Climategate). The Recession is still destroying the lives of millions of Americans. And, based upon yesterday’s latest report, here comes the inflation we have all been dreading. The President, for all intents and purposes, has been a failure.
Obama’s approval rating is at the lowest ever for a President in office for one year. That is a bad thing for the country, but a good thing for the Republican Party. When you factor in the approval rating of Congress or should I say its 68% percent disapproval rating; the universal dislike of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Chris Dodd; and, the insistence on passing a health care bill even though almost 70% of the country do not want it, things do not look too rosy for the Democratic Party in 2010.
In the past few days, it has become evident that Democratic Congressmen see the writing on the wall. They are beginning to announce their retirements. As of my last count, four have decided not to seek reelection. The most recent being a long term Congressman from Tennessee.
Will 2010 be a repeat of 1994? Or, will it be even worse for the Democratic Party than 1994? Who knows? I can just say for the record I would not want to be running for reelection as a member of any party right now; especially the Democrats.
The Tea Party movement which has been largely ignored by the main stream media and scoffed at by the Democratic leadership is currently polling higher than the mainstream Republican Party. On its face, this would appear to be bad for the Republicans. But, it may actually be good because the Tea Party movement is, for the most part, all Republican. So, unless they form their own party, these people will be voting Republican in November. Of course, if they do form their own party, as I have said in the past, it will represent the end of the conservative movement as we know it. The Democrats will have control for years to come.
A few days ago, I firmly believed that Congress would pass some sort of health care reform within the next 60 days. However, yesterday’s events may have made it less likely. Just when Harry Reid seemed to have reached a compromise to get his filibuster proof 60 votes, his own party began to splinter. Ex DNC Chairman Howard Dean went on the record as saying that the entire Senate Bill should be scratched because it has become spineless. Per Mr. Dean, without a public option there is nothing to discuss. If Dean is successful, whatever Reid was accomplishing in the Senate will dissipate quickly. Only then, will Health Care Reform have to become bipartisan for anything to happen. Abortion, Tort Reform and the Free Market for Health Insurance will have to be addressed. If Harry Reid and the President are smart about this, they may be able to pass Health Care Reform with Republican support, albeit the left wing of the Democratic Party will be left in the dust! Good riddance to them I say.
On another front, just this morning, Iran launched another test missile. In the past year, President Obama has done nothing to stop Iran’s nuclear program. Will the events of the past 24 hours change his attitude? Or, must the world rely completely on Israel to stop this threat? It seems that this is going to be the case. Facing extreme opposition from the left wing of his party, President Obama is not going to confront Iran in any way that will scare its leadership into submission. Our only hope is that Obama does not try to stop Israel from doing what is necessary.
By the way, I was at a dinner last week in which a very prevalent Congressman was speaking. Congressman Mark Kirk from Illinois, a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the current Republican hopeful to take President Obama’s Illinois Senate seat, stated that one of the biggest blunders made by President Obama in foreign affairs was the removal of the missile shield from Poland. Appeasing the Russians here was a tragic strategic error. Kirk made it clear that the missile defense system in question was not just to protect NATO countries. Apparently Poland is a direct line between Iran and the United States. That missile defense system would be protecting the United States from an Iranian missile attack.
I could go on forever, but this is enough for one of my last columns of 2009. In concluding, this has not been a very good year for the country, its President and its Congress. However, I do not hear anyone saying right now that the Republican Party is dead and should be buried. In fact, all I hear is that the Republican Party is going to possibly take back Congress in 2010. Of course, if the economy turns around in the next nine months, 2010 could turn into a good year for Democrats again!

The Teaparty and Conservative movement must gain control of the Republican Party by 2010. If we fracture into different parties it will surely be a disaster. If we can't do it in 2010, then all bets are off, but before that happens I would argue for one more attempt at bring the Republican party back to the small government model.
Agreed. While I like the idea of a new party (mainly just to kick the stupid Republicans who aren't conservative) I don't think it would be a good idea.
Having that opinion is also a sad thing. How sad is it that in order to get anywhere in this "democracy" that you have to choose between two parties? Perhaps the real answer is to get rid of parties entirely? I know, too radical.
It's not radical and our government was never designed to have parties involved, George Washington wrote "that these parties will be the death of us" The man continues to prove his foresight and intelligence.
Actually, I think next year is the last year of the first decade of the millennium.
Sadly too few republicans want to be in a small govt conservative party. The GOP is full of big control freaks who see spending of OPM as a election birthright. How many are truly conservative? Very few. So the Tea Party movement will be birthed and perhaps between those who can not move to independent status and GOP we can collectively win enough seats to make Barack HUSSEIN Obama a lame duck instead of a LAME BRAIN. I sure have not seen Michael Steele reaching out, have you?

Ben Nelson of Nebraska has been bought, just like Landrieu, though I think Landrieu still holds the record price for Senate prostitution. I had hopes that he might stand by his principles. But nope, unless those principles are only dedicated to re-election.

The economy will turn around in 2010 due to the way that taxpayer money wil be infused into the economy. A large part of the reason that most of the "Stimulus" money has not been spent is that it was designed to be a large re-election fund for Democrats.
If the Tea Partiers form their own party it will empower only the Democrats. That's how the racist Woodrow Wilson and the corrupt Bill Clinton got elected.
The only path that will work will be for the Tea Partieres take over the Republican Party. They should vote for Republicans, no matter if they're Conservatives or not.
But after the election, DON'T GO HOME. Hold their feet to the fire. If they won't back the smaller government, more freedom type of government, show up at their town halls, pepper them with phone calls and e-mails.

You're absolutely right about the "democrat stimulus money." However, let's not leave out pulling our troops out of Iraq by 2010 or 2011 depending on the situation, and buying votes with more payoffs to the ACORN and SEIU leaders and other unions. All this long with making American citizens out of illegal aliens and giving them the right to vote for their favorite democrat in 2012.
Believe me this has been planned before Obama even got into office.
Which didn't work, which is how we wound up with two parties.

There was no year zero, so the first ten years were 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
But next year is the first year of the rest of our lives. Let's use it wisely.
It's obvious what has to be done, right? Many of the comments here say it. Conservatives/Tea Party-ists need to define and lead the argument over the next 10 months. The message of our plan for change must be taught. Only if … this brand of "politician" is victorious in November will this country have the best chance to make the quickest comeback.
I decided to head over to the library of congress (the website of course) and look it up. Reading Washington's writings or speeches never cease to amaze me. Anyway, there are some very interesting tidbits from his farewell address. In regards to political parties, here's a little snippet:
"However combinations or associations of the above description may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things to become potent engines by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people, and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion."

While Bush did little to stop Iran's nuclear programs (thanks, I think, to the propaganda media which hammered him unmercifully and poor advice which encouraged him to go into Iraq, taking Iran off the table), Iran didn't invade Iraq during his presidency. It just did that. Do you think Iran would have grabbed the oil well if Bush wee president? Ask yourself. If you were Iran would you worry one iota about Obama? I suspect so long as Iran leaves Kenya alone and doesn't attack the USA directly, he'll let Iran do what it wants in the Middle East. He probably subscribes to the USA shouldn't be the ONLY world power (ala Madeline Albright) and would welcome Iran's running things over there.
2. 1 year into Obama's presidency we've had a terrorist attack on American soil (Fort Hood). Contrast the propaganda media's reportage of Fort Hood to their reportage of the bombing of the Murrah Bld in OK City.
3. Foreign Policy. We've dissed Europe, esp. Britain (probably through a long standing hatred for them colonizing Kenya), ticked off France for our fecklessness (FRANCE!), irked Germany (Merkel looks like she can't stand him), abandoned Poland and other Eastern Europe countries who thought we were their friend,
sucked up to Chavez, taken the communist totalitarian's side in Honduras
4. Taxes are going to skyrocket under Obama. Ask the EPA
5. Health Care. What we're going to do there is cover uninsured workers (in the country legally or not) and ration the care for those who no longer are useful to the government (old people). Look for private, well staffed hospitals to spring up either in this country or over seas to take care of RICH old people. Meanwhile, your grandpa will wait in a queue while his cough turns into pneumonia.
The ONLY Republican that is NOT AFRAID of the 'good ole boy' system in Washington is Sarah Palin!!! She IS NOT afraid to take down the Republican's that have been corrupted by power in Washington!! A third party will only give the Democrats more votes, so we have to make sure that the Republicans we DO VOTE for have not been corrupted by greed already!!

Get to the Republican Primary. Vote for the conservative. No conservative? Run yourself. Here in Kentucky we have Dr. Rand Paul. The RINOs are backing the 'other guy', but the people want Dr. Paul. Newt has the potential to divide/eliminate the conservative vote in the same way McCain did imho. I think he's a fine ideas-man similarly to those working in advertising.
But since we never elect perfect humans to the presidency, I do think Newt is certainly competent enough to be president. His baggage though would be dredged up by PopMedia all over again if he runs. IF he became the Republican nominee he would have my vote. In fact. I'm quite sure I will have made my peace with a 'president Newt' if the alternative is 8 unbroken years of Barack Hussein Obama.
First of all, I'm going to assume that you somehow misunderstood what Mark Kirk was saying because if someone is selling the idea that Iranian missiles are a diredt threat to the United States, they are full of sh*t. Acquiesing on the Missile Sheild to appease the Russians shows the same weakness, stupidity and blindness that the Carter Administration was known for, but the idea that Iran would try to threaten the US with a missile attack is ridiculous.
Also, to say that Barrack Obama accomplished nothing is not true. Mr. Obama has created the largest peace-time deficit in the History of our country (17% of GDP). He has embarked on a series of spending plans that see the National Debt increasing at a rate where it will soon surpass our Gross National Product. He has made the United States Federal Budget larger than the Gross National Product of the world's second largest economy. Let's make it clear, Obama has accomplished a lot. Unfortunately if you wish to see a future where America is the world's leading economy, what he has accomplished is not very positive.
That's right. The year 1999 was the 2,000th year and thus the 100th year of the twentieth century. 2000 was really the first year of 2001. 2010 will be the conclusion of 10 years in the 21st century. The end of 2010 will be the conclusion of 2011 as the first year of the next decade.

Not true. The next decade begins on January 1, 2010 as the beginning of 2011's year which concludes on January 1st, 2012. Like someone else said earlier, when you're born you're not one year old yet but you're living in your first year which concludes on your first birthday. Your age is the total number of years you've lived, just like in calendar years. When 2010 comes, it'll already be 2010 years since the birth of Christ and you'll be living in the 2011th year after this coming December 31st.
They better do it totally and completely…and SOON! Otherwise, forget it.

I think the idea is a good one, and one which I intend to personally implement.
However, when you think about it, most voters are uninformed and/or apathetic. The Teaparty and Conservative movement require a conscious thought and action process because it means changing.
The first thing the real Republicans/Teaparty or Conservatives have to do to clean the party is find viable conservative candidates to run against encumbent RINOs. These conservative candidates must be properly groomed for the run and put out there in far more visibility than the encumbent who already has the edge. Most voters do not want to put too much work into chosing a candidate to back. It's going to be tough but it must be done if things are to change. They have to change. You can put a lot of blame on the RINOs in Washington for the way things are now. These RINOs think they have to meet a Dem half way and that "settling" an issue is acceptable. They feel eating only a piece of socialist pie is better than having to choke down the whole pie. My feeling is even a small piece of socialist pie is worse than no socialist pie.
There is a big difference between Bush and Obama. The ones who didn't vote for Obama know this as fact.

I can understand the RINO's logic–take what you can get, if that is what they are thinking–but as long as they've been in DC, they ought to know by now how ineffective that is. Each time they triangulate, it puts us closer and closer to the left.

With the new health care regs coming at them, they're likewise reluctant to hire. I have a friend who is a VP of a medical device company and he hasn't hired in two years and has no intention. All these health care "savings" will be taken out of doctors' , drug companies' and device makers' hides. What they don't have, they can't spend (or invent).
What makes you people think there WILL be an election in 2010?
The Obamacrats have a HUGE slush fund from TARP and the foot soldiers from SEIU, Acorn, and whatever other sham corporations Soros can setup. They can FAKE an election now……just like their pals in the other Banana Republics.
And even if they LOSE? SOROS makes billions trashing the US Dollar……just like he did when he trashed the English Pound.
It's clear that Obama considers himself to be a success. So we can assume that even in his 'failures' he is accomplishing his overall goal of sowing discord and destruction of the America he rejects.
In the meantime the Tea Party folks and Republican Party need to clarify what is expected for a unity large enough to beat Obama and his Democratics. American politics are about compromise and always have been from the beginning. Republicans and 'Republican voters' who consider themselves Tea Party participants will come together to form a coherent opposition or consign us to another 4 years of Obama&Co after the merciless end of Obama's first 4 years. Remember Bill Clinton's 1st win, enabled in large part to the Perotistas who divided the vote, signifying nothing but random discontent. It's going to take united focused opposition to defeat Obama in 2012.
Republican leaders have earned some disrespect for having jumped on the loosey goosey 'train-o-compassion' which leads them to discussing the speed at which we swallow socialism. On the other hand, Democrats are the masters at cheap political theater while Republicans tend to be more reserved and level headed in presentation, which may tend to make them look weak. I think it's important to guard against a simple piling on that paints all Republican leaders as part of the problem. I say this as one who has done my share of it, while not a Republican, but a consistent 'Republican voter'.
What's a Republican? I'm sick of these clowns enacting the following, but then acting like they are for limited government.

2. no child left behind
3. agriculture subsidies
4. steel tariffs
5. TARP 1
6. auto bailout

The year 2000 was the LAST year of the LAST decade of the 20th century; 2001 was the FIRST year of the FIRST decade of the 21st century and 2010 will be the LAST year of the FIRST decade of the new Millennium, liberal hype not withstanding. By your count, a "10 year old" reaches their first decade at the ripe old age of 9 years.
100% Correct. This December 31 is will be the 10th anniversary of the most widely celebrated mathematical error in history- the celebration of "the millennium" in 2000.
While I'll give 2010 a pass for celebrating decades (since we're not really celebrating the 202nd Gregorian Decade, but more of a contemporary decade like "the 60's" or "the 90's" or "the whatevertheheckwecallthisdecade-ies"), the celebration of the millennium in 2000 was completely incorrect. Anyone that says differently can be proved wrong with this little trick. Ask this person if they think that 2009 is the 9th year of the millennium. They'll probably say yes. So then ask if 2008 was the 8th, 2007 was the 7th, etc. until you get to 2001.

"So what's 2000?"
"Ummm…."
You cannot say that 2000 is the beginning of the 201st Decade, the 21st Century, or the 3rd millennium CE. Because if there's a year zero, then there should be a decade zero, or a century zero, or a millennium zero… which is absurd. So, for the sake of mathematical consistency, celebrating the millennium in 2001 is the correct way to do so.
Too bad we're 9 years too late for that.
This is the major confusion in year numbers. When you are born, you are indeed "zero years old" (cardinal numbers like 0, 1, 2, 3…) but you are in your "first year" (ordinal numbers like 1st, 2nd, 3rd…), which ends on your first birthday. The Gregorian calendar doesn't use cardinals- it uses ordinals. So 2010 is the 2010th year of the Common Era/Anno Domini, because there is no year Zero AD. So technically, the 202nd decade of the Common Era begins next year.
HOWEVER- for the contemporary recollection of dates (like "the 50s"), it's more or less agreed that the "-ies" decades begin with X0 and end with X9. It's mathematically incorrect, but is aesthetically pleasing. Just as long as it's not considered to be the 202nd Gregorian decade….
"202nd decade of the Common Era begins next year." – meaning next NYE in 2010-2011.
I'd like Mark Kirk to point it out in the constitution where anyone born on American soil is automatically a citizen. The 14th amendment says NOTHING about it!! I've read the constitution up and down sideways and upside down and see nothing about birthright citizenship.. It's all a huge lie!!!
