D-Day for Health Care Reform?
by Frank DeMartiniCongress is back in session after its hot and grueling August recess. More than a few of its members were drilled incessantly by citizens upset about the pending passage of HR 3200 and/or its progeny. Today President Obama will address the nation on health care reform. It will be his final pitch to the country in hopes that he can regain his splendor with the American public which has been fairly tarnished over the whole issue.
Yesterday, the Los Angeles Times ran an article entitled, “Obama is Fast Losing White Voters’ Support.” In that article, the Times states that, “strategists in both parties blame Obama’s decline on growing discontent with his policy agenda, particularly after a month of often-rowdy debate over his proposed healthcare overhaul, in which some conservatives accused him of socialism.” What else can this plan be called? I have torn apart HR 3200 in many ways. And, above all else, when the plan is carefully reviewed it is socialist.
In his speech, Obama will make a plea to the people of America that the plan is necessary and should be supported by all. It should not be a Republican and/or Democratic issue. It is an American problem that needs to be addressed. As I have said before, we all agree on that. However, we cannot agree to the President and Congress’ current plan.
In the last few days, a couple of new proposals have been introduced. One is that the President is willing to take the public option off of the table. This is a good start. But, to have some sort of trigger in the bill which would initiate a public option if some level of events happen or do not happen is ridiculous. Who is going to judge whether the trigger has occurred? Which Presidential Czar will be in charge of that? (I am just assuming there will be another Czar since that seems to be Obama’s answer to everything despite recent problems.)
Another option being put on the table is to tax so called “Cadillac” plans which are the crème of the crop in medical plans. These are usually plans held by top executives at major corporations. Taxing these may make a lot of sense if we must tax something to pay for this onslaught on taxpayer money. However, will that include taxing Congress’ plan as well? I do not know how else to describe Congress’ plan other than to say it is a true Cadillac plan. If Congress agrees to such a tax, I am sure top executives would agree as well. Are not the Democrats the ones wanting to make the playing field level all the time?
The Senate Finance Committee is working on what would be the first true bipartisan plan right now. As reported by Fox.com, the plan would include penalties for those who do not get insurance depending on income level and family size. It would also be the first mandatory plan in the same vein that Auto Insurance is mandatory in many states. However, it would not include a public option at all. In its place, the plan would include non-profit cooperatives (whatever the hell they are).
If this plan addresses all of the issues I addressed in my prior article I can see it being something that that Republican Party can get behind. Let’s just hope so.
Van Jones! Now, there’s a name I am sure President Obama would like to soon forget. Talk about a major screw up on the Administration’s part. Here is a man that is a self-avowed Communist; signed a petition which alleged that that Bush Administration was behind 9/11; referred to Republican’s as “assholes” within the last six months; and stated that “Black Students would never do a Columbine.” I wonder what vetting process the Obama Administration did on Mr. Jones. It took all of about ten days for Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity to out this guy.
The result of Beck and Hannity’s research was obvious. Van Jones had to go. But, he resigned and was not fired. Why? The Obama Administration is still standing behind him even though all the evidence showed this man should have never even been appointed. His resignation letter cited a “vicious smear campaign against me” as his major reason for resigning. Come on. Who is he kidding?
Did the Obama Administration vet him at all? Did they know about his past? Did they agree with his past? Or, was it just extreme ineptitude on the Administration’s part? All of these choices have scary consequences? I guess admitting they screwed up was the least damaging.
But, what about Obama’s other Czars? Have they all been properly vetted? Or, are there other potential problems lurking in the background to haunt the Administration? Are the potential problems with John Holdrum and Cass Sunstein enough to have them resign as well? Holdrum seems to advocate certain population control policies that would be opposed to a majority of the American populace. And, Sunstein believes that animals should be permitted to sue humans. (I admit this is a bit ridiculous, but do we want this guy that close to the President of the United States).
This all brings to mind major problems with the whole process of appointing Presidential Advisors. Should these advisors who obviously have the President’s ear be required to be approved by the Senate? Thus far, the answer has been no as only Cabinet Posts and other higher government positions require the “advise and consent” of the Senate. Maybe, that should be changed. Maybe, all of the Czars should be approved by the Senate. I am sure the Senate’s vetting process would have discovered the problems with Van Jones and possibly John Holdrum and Cass Sunstein as well. The Senate process did put an end to a few of Obama’s earlier nominees, including those nominated for a few Cabinet posts.
In closing, let us see how the President’s performance today is viewed by the American public. Is this the D-Day for health care or just the beginning of what will be a long, hard debate?

Frank – I like the notion that Congress should have to pay for their health care like everybody else or be taxed. There is no question that any healthcare that is entirely or partially subsidized by an employer is a form of compensation and, in theory, subject to taxation. The issue, of course, is whether a progressive income tax is really all that fair vs. some type of flat tax.
As far as non-profit cooperatives are concerned, consider them public option stalking horse. The government will subsidize (hence control them,) and if they go under financially, Uncle Sam will be all too happy to step in.
he lost my support !! oh thats right he never had it !! sorry !
"It will be his final pitch to the country"
You must have started the drinking game before the speech started. This is NOT his final pitch! I wish it were soooooooooo.
"the plan would include non-profit cooperatives(whatever the hell they are)"
Its referred to as Publish Option in the English Webster Dictionary.
Lets watch the trained seals clap on both sides of the isle as Dear Leader presents HR3200 with a new set of defined words being used!
"the plan would include penalties for those who do not get insurance… It would also be the first mandatory plan… If this plan addresses all of the issues I addressed in my prior article I can see it being something that that Republican Party can get behind. Let’s just hope so."
Wait a minute. You don't mind unconstitutional federal bullying, so long as it won't increase the deficit?
"Is this the D-Day for health care or just the beginning of what will be a long, hard debate?"
Both. Toward the end of the great, Patton, the general, about six months after D-Day and just before the siege of Bastogne/Battle of the Bulge, says "[My troops] realize, as I do, that we can still lose this war."
I use the analogy since it is apt, but I have to say no one should be entirely comfortable using military analogies in discussing politics involving himself and his fellow countrymen. We're all Americans here, and however unAmerican some people's ideas may be, we can't lose sight of what unites us.
That said, I believe we must be both relentless and logical. Cheap shots won't help us. Consistent and clear deconstructions of the arguments for the "reform" plan will serve us best. Pace Bill Maher and the Hollywood elite, Americans are not stupid. We might not all have umpteen degrees but we're hard to bamboozle and we don't like to be lied to.
We also must not let them dominate the debate by adopting their euphemistic terminology. (i.e. this isn't "reform," this is statism/socialism.) We're quoting the Founding Fathers and greatest economists, they're demonstrating an inability to do basic math. We're quoting the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Federalist papers. . . and they're throwing around the usual faux-intellectual liberal twaddle.
They have nothing, not one argument in their favor. Anyone who reads the bill, as Mr. DeMartini says, will see it for what it is. Such is why they wanted it pushed through ASAP. Yet we've drawn out the debate long enough for moderates to see the devils in the details, and the more consistent and clear we are in the upcoming months, I think, the better chance we have of sinking this boondoggle in toto.

Obama – "individuals required to carry basic health insurance……"
Butt Out, Obama!
Definitely Unconstitutional!! and NONE OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS!
These clowns cannot even manage Medicaid properly, which has a deficit in excess of $35 Billion. Under no circumstances can these idiots, the same idiots that have mismanaged social security, be allowed to run the healthcare system.
I'm not even going to watch the speech (actually, it may be on right now, I'm really not sure). I have had a long day and shouting replies to his nonsense at the television will not help. According to Drudge, unless there's a major shakeup, by the Democrats' own numbers they don't have the votes to pass a bill with or without the public option anyway.
http://drudgereport.com/flashwc.htm
Drudge compiled a list of quotes for each democrat in the House who would not support the bill as it is. Many would not because they insist we must have a public option, but many are opposed to it because of the increased taxing and spending!
Yeah, it's on now. In the other room. Where I can't hear it. I'll read about it tomorrow.
Yeah, I don't get why we need a public option for everyone when we have Medicaid. Isn't that supposed to cover disadvantaged people?
If this is the health care D-Day, then it must be us storming the beaches of Obama
absolutely, who defines *basic*?
Critique of Obama's healthcare speech to Congress?
What a monumental pile of dissembling, deceiving, self-serving bovine excretement!
Yes.
But….after The Magic Negro has done is best Saruman impression tonight, watch public opinion swing 10 points in his favor.
So. Tonight Obama finally came down in favor of the Public Option.
It's ON, baby!
Obama has between 30 and 45 czars, depending on who's counting. I understand his wife has 19 paid assisstants, when no former first lady had more than 3. Obviously these 2 need all the help they can get…………………………………………………provided the US taxpayer is picking up the dime.
Yep.
Another failure, too.
The czars should be banned…period.
If you can't handle the problems yourself with the Cabinet, you are way above your pay grade…
Barry has them to insulate himself from the decisions. Example: Van Jones.
Any plan that includes the word "mandatory" is a violation of the right to voluntary trade and should be opposed. Any plan that uses Federal funds to finance health care or insurance is Federal welfare and should be opposed. Any plan that does anything but get the Feds out of the way is grossly immoral and ultimately impractical and should be opposed.
Obama's world view is Government is the best solution for all problems…
It was awful.
This is a DIRECT assault on liberty.
What Obama is proposing is that essentially every American is now born with a Tax Debt!
Do you think Nancy windbag botoxface Pelosi will be sanctioning South Carolina Republican Rep. Joe Wilson for yelling "YOU LIE" in the middle of Obama's speech when he was talking about illegal immigrants?
The con will be to have this intense DEMOCRATIC debate where they very publicly concede a few points to the republicans without actually consulting them and blast it all over how they are bending over backward to find consensus. Then at the last minute they will make some large concession like allowing people to buy insurance across state lines and play it up as big as possible that the dims are really giving away the store then pass it that night using every backhanded trick possible WITH the public option. They will then create a LARGE diversion, maybe by sacrificing 3 or 4 nutcase CZARS to divert attention and releive pressure. Then more 45 minute speeches about nothing to make believe nothing has happened.. They are not worried because they wrote the bill so they can give away everything and just keep the "advisory board" who can later guide the program to single payer just like they always wanted. The whole thing is just kabuki theater and "WE HAVE TO HEAD FAKE THE SHEEP BECAUSE THEY ARE STUPID AND WE ARE TIRED OF THEM"
Let's just say it. Obama's not the second coming. He's your typical, big government liberal. Nothing more and probably a lot less. Funny how Democrats think that if you can smoothly spew more crap than a used car salesman, you can be their nominee for president. Obama has NEVER, listen liberals, NEVER run ANYTHING. He's never had a payroll based on profit/loss, he's barely been a senator. He's NEVER had to make hard choices except which teleprompter to look into. Sarah Palin DID have more tangible experience than this guy. The press should have vetted him more than they did her. He's clearly under qualified for this job and we're going to suffer for it.
Really? Is that in HR 3200?
ToddM, I respectfully disagree to an extent. Obama is not your typical democrat politician, he is far more malevolent and insidious. His ideas are dangerously irresponsible and radical; he himself stated that the Constitution is a hindrance and he’s successfully circumvented it with the appointment of 44 unaccountable czars. Obama has made his views clear; he is an enemy of the Constitution therefore an enemy of the US.
The speech was sooooo Castro. There was so many lies that I felt physically ill from listening and had to turn it off. People do your homework – there was nothing in that speech that was truth -stop drinking kool aid and check every lie in that speech with one or all three of those bills. This will break us as a country.
I heard it explicitly stated by more than a handful of credible sources. I downloaded and read a portion HR3200 although I was looking for something else. One things for sure, it's a monstrosity. No political prostitute should even be allowed to vote on it unless they've read every word and are themselves forced to enroll.
I know what you mean and I totally agree. He is pushing irregardless of the damage it could do to the country. I meant that he is nothing more than a politician. Not a great healer that he was marketed to be.

Video: GOP congressman yells “liar” at Obama
http://hotair.com/archives/2009/09/09/video-gop-c...
Too bad all the Republicans didn't stand in unison several times loudly booing. Missed opportunity, but at least we got a "liar!!" in. Good job congressman.
I yelled "LIAR" so often and loud at the tv tonight that I woke the neighbors kids.
South Carolina representative Joe Wilson deserves a big THANK YOU for calling Obama a liar regarding illegal aliens not getting health care under HR3200.
Rep Wilson could have shouted that from beginning to end of Obama's speech and never have been wrong.
Obama's speech start to finish is one big lie.
Like we expected truth from the 'transparency' president?
Awful wasn't the word for it.
Can we deem Obama a lame duck now?
He declared war on the American people.
And will be ratified by Prince Harry Reid when he uses the nuke option.
And she will remain silent on Chuck Rangle.
Sure wiped that fake smile off of her face for a long time. That was the only good part of the speech GO JOE!
Sure wiped that fake smile off of Nancy Botox's face for a long time. That was the only good part of the speech GO JOE!
"So You Think You Can Dance Judges Pan Obama Performance" http://optoons.blogspot.com/2009/09/so-you-think-...
A couple tid bits… auto insurance is mandatory in some states – sure, but for liability only. Meaning that if you hit someone, the victim will not be left (completely) in the lurch. By the prezzie's logic, Type A's, Frito Lay and our ancestors should be footing the insurance bills.
If we are going to be paying for more government care by cleaning up the waste and fraud in the other two public offerings, WHY would we want yet another public plan that is bound to be laden with its own fraud and waste AND why not just clean up the fraud and waste NOW in medicare and medicaid.
I am tired of the lies and taking us for a pack of idiots.
I just hope that Joe and his wife will be safe. Over at HuffyPot, they've already posted his home phone number, and given his wife's name and asked that everybody call and give Joe and his wife an earful. I'm sure they're getting congratulations too, but not from those evil shits!
So I've been told that I don't complain that the govt has a post office & SS, why not health care? Well, the P.O. is in the red & raises postage rates every year, so I can expect my health care to operate in the red & cost me more each year. SS is broke & not going to issue the usual cost of living increase next year, we'll be lucky it doesn't decline. So, again, I can expect my health care to go broke & likely decrease as time goes on. Yup! The govt would do a great job running our health care–right into the ground!
just more flim-flam from our motivational-speaker-in-chief. "i won't increase the deficit by one dime" …hahaha.. too late ! he's already increased it by TRILLIONS !
"my door is always open… but i don't want to hear any criticism"
"we'll get rid of the waste in government healthcare… and put it in government healthcare !" ugh.
Maybe there is language in one of many bills that states illegal immigrants are not covered.
Obama will work around that when he passes immigration reform in 2010. By 2012 when healthcare reform kicks in all 12-15 million ex- illegal immigrants will be covered.
Medicaid has a large drop that many don't like. For example in PA, when I checked after breaking a leg some years back while without insurance, you could keep your house but were limited to one vehicle, and you had to report all your assets and weren't allowed to have practically anything. Heck, if you had whole life insurance you could be forced to drain down the cash balance.
Vehicle insurance and registration is relatively cheap, and if you're driving junk a backup is appreciated. You might also have to choose between a pick-up good for hauling, or a minivan for the family. That's a deal breaker right there. There are other reasons not to make yourself poor enough for Medicaid, and for the working poor to forgo insurance, like saving for a vehicle or a house. You could also have rental property, like if you bought a double house (duplex) and rent out the other side. When possible, Medicaid would have you sell off the other half and any other properties, and that can be a long wait for a sale, plus the numerous headaches with split ownership of a property.
So what happens when something happens that racks up huge medical bills when you're without insurance? If you don't have much to begin with you might go for Medicaid, they will help with unpaid bills, then you can get off of it and rebuild your wealth. You can work out payment plans, hospitals may give discounts and hardship allowances, etc. And a lot of people file for bankruptcy, however, those may have assets they are trying to protect thus are not the "extreme poverty" cases cited in the debate. (Slightly OT, I knew one guy who considered bankruptcy, lawyer told him to first max out his cards then file. The next day after filing he got approved for a truck loan, dealer figured he was working and wasn't making any other payments, so…)
Now tonight, Barry insisted on mandated insurance. There goes going without insurance to save up for something better for your family. The permanent welfare class will become even further entombed, before it could hardly pay to try to leave, now they will remove a major method of trying at all.
Congressional enrollment should be mandatory no matter what. This thing would have died a long time ago if Congress was forced into this thing.
What we need is not a public option but cheap insurance period. There are creative ways to get it that don't need government, or at least government control.
How does this sound? Health care credit plan. Monthly premium is for a high-deductible like $10,000 a year, should be easy enough for working people to afford. But who can afford a $10,000 bill? You can, on payments. Up to the deductible is treated like a low-interest credit card balance, you make payments. Don't use it or pay out-of-pocket, you just pay the catastrophic-level premium. Can't pay when used, you make monthly payments at about 3 or 4%, the lowest you can get a bank to agree to, set to get paid off in under a year. If you run up a high balance and can't clear it, you get moved to a lower deductible and higher premium, and become eligible for an "optional" credit counseling session. Hey, you need help and people want to get paid, so that's fair.
That's an all-capitalist solution, should help a lot. Just needs a merging of health insurance and banking for this limited application. And "pre-existing conditions" should cease being an issue since even those with them will be unlikely to hit the deductible limit in any given year, they could do pool pricing by age range regardless of actual health It would also make patients into smarter shoppers since they will end up footing the bill for nearly anything, like should happen with those health savings accounts.
I just pulled that one out an hour ago. Does that already sound better than "the public option"?
That's disgusting. I guess that Huffpo's version of Amerika doesn't include dissenting opinions. I'm not surprised but it's scary that a large segment of society seems to think those kind of tactics are okay. Sick.
[...] link: D-Day for Health Care Reform? This entry is filed under America – Blogs, Big Hollywood. You can follow any responses to this [...]
Actually, there isn't. The democrats refused to put that language in. HR3200 just doesn't expressly address the issue. Illegals don't get the government subsidy to pay the premium. The language is subtle, but they are covered.
It's almost 9:00 Eastern…is that foolish socialist Hussein still trying to hi-jack 1/6 of the American economy?
This was never about sensible healthcare reform, this was about centralizing govt control a la Mussolini's Italy, Hitler's Germany and, Castro's Cuba and Chavez's venezuela. These cackling airheads think they're clever when they say with a grin: "sure you'll be able to keep your current insurance." What they don't mention is:
1) Private insurance companies will not be allowed to enroll new customers; what business could function under these circumstances.
2) If you ever decide to leave your private insurer you can never go back to any form of private insurance.
The govt will wait for a good portion of private insurers clientele to pass away and since they cannot bring on new customers they will be forced out of business. If anyone thought insurance companies could be wicked wait till you're assimilated into the heartless, cold arms of the govt.
I watched the speech, a few points. How is mandating the terms and conditions of coverage in a "market exchange" encouraging competition? And he laid it out there. Comprehensive coverage. It really doesn't matter if there is a public option or not. In order for an insurance company to sell a new policy, it must meet the government mandates. If there are two policies or two thousand policies, if they are basically the same that isn't competition, that's like choosing between two thousand identical Fords except for the color. There is no incentive for competitive pricing because it is all the same product, essentially. If anything pricing will go up, because people will be mandated to sign up for coverage that they will not agree with.
Beautiful! I don't think Obama knows what's the truth or not. He's been groomed as a bureaucrat and it's all he knows. You can say the same about the Democrats in congress. I venture to say than not more than a handful have EVER run a business or made a payroll in their lives. I have a friend in Congress and he's a farmer. These libs don't know anything about working for a living.
Obama is mirroring the Chavez/Castro model. Rattle on endlessly like many of his socialist dictator buddies.
This entire healthcare speech, debate, and white house handling is nothing short of a HACK JOB ON THE AMERICAN PUBLIC! There I have said it. I listened to the speech last night, and I felt offended for the Republicans who were singled out and not given real credit. The Sal Alinsky playbook was in full force last night. Sadly, the comments about the need for bipartisanship should have rested solely on the shoulders of Pelosi and her thugs, and the Democrats in general. Let's face it. No meaningful meetings were allowed with input by the Republicans until they had to go public to even make their points for reform. This overgovernment, overreaching, overcontrol, over-speech-making is just too too much. It all comes down to not genuine. And further, too many sneakins which will harm us all, and will provide ample paybacks to the unions, cronies, etc. When will this insanity not only stop, but be seen by all of the kool aid drinking liberals, who are clueless about how this mess will affect their lives too????
Pres. Opompous is a bore…..not to mention just a bald-faced liar. Yessiree……Opompous last night absolutely secured a GOP takeover in 2010 and in 2012. Thanks, B. Hussein, for performing as the biggest jerkoff president probably in this nation's history.
Thanks…that was priceless!
But I suspect what happens is that they all wind up on the public dole and I wind up paying for their medical treatment.
The situation as it currently exists.
Some manner of reform is necessary. But even by government mandate how will people such as the illegal aliens be forced to comply?
I see citizens forced to buy insurance yet illegals receiving the same AAA care they receive now. So how would mandatory basic insurance improve that inequity?
My objection is to Obama and/or the government requiring everyone to carry basic insurance. That amounts to little more than a tax by another name, and the end result is pretty much the same–we wind up paying, through increased premiums on our own insurance, for people that do develop catastrophic illness.
More and more the government is intruding into our lives. Used to be it was not so much a problem. But with the clear intent Obama and his bunch have to change the political system of this country to Marxism/socialism, a line has to be drawn.
If not here, where?
…for a while I thought that Billy Mays came back from the dead……what b/s
Hey – at least Billy Mays peddled some worthwhile products, plus his commercials and infomercials didn't run as long as a typical B-HO speech.
If you listen and watch the MSM, they are saying this was a hit and now every man, woman, and dog are on board. At the least every single Democrat, according to them.Has there been any post-speech polls to see if this has swayed any number of the public? Not that I believe polls prove much, but at least are an indicator. I fear that this thing will pass, and we should start thinking of ways to fight its actual existence.
Well, there are some real practical problems attendant to your view. Granted that people should have the right to opt out of paying for health insurance, what happens when those people wind up with catastrophic illnesses? Do we say, "Screw you…you made your choice and now you're on your own"?
I'm really OK with that. But I suspect what happens is that they all wind up on the public dole and I wind up paying for their medical treatment.
There's personal freedom, and there's personal responsibility.

does anyone witha brain want the governmnet to run their health care? Omagine the people at the DMV, post office, IRS, welfare office, or any other government office you have ever delt with controlling your health care?
can you imagine one window open with a person behind the counter stamping your form with apprroved/disapproved, and they have a sign over the counter that says it is against the law to question, complain, or threaten the government worker in any way and anything you might say can be construed as a threeat.
Furthermore, if you do have a complaint or qiuestion, get a form and send it in to 'who cares'.
or their website whocares@government_worker.gov
If that worker gets off on stamping the form disapproved, rejected, or claims the form was never sent, was filled out wrong, or was lost..
You do get the form but the English version starts on page 807.
The government worker hates your color or sex, or has a crappy home life and decides to take it out on your file..
This is how the government works..
and yet there are people who actually support government health reform..
