The intro and out are good, she's good, the laugh track's fine (though I think it would be funny to pan to shots of an avatar audience clapping). Material too predictably setup and zing.
I had the same thought, Andrew. You beat me to it.
I found the laugh track distracting. Some of the material was pretty funny, though. And the news reader is kind of cute, which is a plus for me.
Clever. It's better than most of what I've seen lately at SNL and late night television.
http://the100mostannoyingthings.blogspot.com/
The http://newsbusters.org/ site is a great place to send people who have no idea how they're being manipulated by our worthless media.
I dunno. I rather liked it. She had great delivery, and the fact that she's pretty cute doesn't hurt. Laugh track was a little distracting, but they probably can't afford a live audience. but if they ever managed to turn this into a 30-minute prime time show, I'd probably watch it.
Pretty lame, and the laugh track is embarrassing. The only good conservative comedy I've found in the last few years has been in weblog comments sections. Oh, I forgot about "Red Eye" – I loves me some "Red Eye"!
It's odd how many here are focusing on the laughtrack. Let's judge the comedy on its merits. In this case, I have to say it's pretty good.
Could be a little less overtly conservative however.
Ugh. I'm reregistering LP. At least they have Drew Carrey.
IT"S FAKE!?!?! DAMMIT!!!! Where's Baba Wawa when we need her?
Based solely on the comedic aspect of it I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Perhaps in a little time it will reach the Dennis Miller level of side splitting, piss your pants, 12 out of 10 funny.
Yet another swing at bringing down the PC wall.
Well, that proves it. Conservatives really are cool.
Comedy writing is an art. They have a good handle on it here. Some development is in order, and I give the jokes a strong 6.5 rating. Two lottery jokes in 2 minutes is one too many. Topics were at least relevant to some current news. A big intangable in good comedy is delivery. She needs some more time behind the desk. But there’s promise. Loosen up a bit and show us yourself. I agree the laugh track was too much, either in it’s consistancy or volume. Bring down one or both and you’ll make it easier to enjoy.
It’s not that conservatives want to be cool, Harley, it’s that we want our opinions to be heard and not ignored. Unfortunatly, there’s a lot of people who think anything associated with conservative thought is uncool from the start. So the tendency for this type of humor is to “shout it from the rooftops” otherwise it gets too easily shoved into the back corner of awareness. As much as I like Red Eye, Gutfield uses this same loud practice. The people who have an erudite level of humor, a la Dennis Miller, are often speaking over the heads of many of our detractors.
Uhg… Laughtracks. Sorry, that's a deal killer.
At least with TV sitcoms, laughtracks stand in as a faux studio audience. For a web delivered production, we all know there'd never be an audience there.

PS help them out.
Thank you for turning me own to Newsbusters…. I never knew how the mainstream media lied so
I think the humor lacks a LOT! sorry, but that is just MHO.
Newsbusters!! It's like Richard Scaife without all the money and talent!!!
Uhm, Dave upthread, and I both blog regularly at Newsbusters, it is a conservative site, announces itself to be, right on the top of the masthead. They have been doing these for years. Some are funnier than others. Sometimes they have a really good skewer, but, like I said, they have been doing them for a long time, and do it every week, so all of them are not equal. Newsbusters is a part of Media Research Center, a very respected organization, headed by Brent Bozell, for those of you who watch Fox, he is on quite frequently, as are some of the contributors. Anyway, if you do have any funnies, they are always glad for them. The laugh track, sure, could do w/o that.
I agree! Not bust a gut funny, but bring a smile funny. Which is better than anything that 3rd rate hack Jon Stewart is doing.
http://lonewolfarcher.blogspot.com/
It's better than SNL, but that's not really a compliment, is it? Oh well. I agree that it's about a 7/10. I wouldn't watch it except that I do agree with the politics and there are occasionally some really good jokes.
I think this is a first blucas, I agree with you. I think some of the folks here could have written better.
Sorry to say that I agree.
I would make the following criticisms. First, the laugh track is very out of place and shows a lack of confidence in the material. Second, the presenter should be more serious OR take on an obvious personality (like Ron Burgundy). Right now, she seems like someone reading jokes. Probably better to take the more serious approach to contrast the humor. Three, some of the punchlines felt less like joke punchlines and more like conservative criticisms masquerading as humor (e.g. why would Obama owe $800 billion to Chicago?).
It has potential, but needs to be tightened up. IMHO.
The Miami Vice bit made me laugh.
I love the Newsbusters site. It's a daily stop for me when I'm browsing. I've never gotten into the Newsbusted vids though. The jokes are too obvious .
I hate to say this because it's going to come off as some network excec weasel, but the material needs to be edgier.
Plus the music's too Daily Show. Bob Mould could sue if he was paying attention.
Detainees in Guatanamo Bay are being treated fine, but the New York Times won't report it!
*canned laughter*
You are right that we as conservatives can always do better with our message, but I thought the Chicago joke was very clear…he owes two million to Chicago AND 787 billion to the rest of us for the bailout. I think these jokes would be more subtle if there was more conservative humor, I think this webcast is for conservatives who aren't used to hearing their points in humor and so it's much more pointed and on the nose. It knows its audience.
I subscribe to Newsbusted's YouTube channel, and they frequently post offers to buy jokes for $50 from anyone that wants to contribute. So, for those that think they could come up with better material than what's in the video, I say give it a try. Who knows, you might make a few bucks and make a few people laugh at the same time.
Caveat: I haven't looked at their YT profile for a few weeks, so I don't know if the offer is still valid. However, the $50 offer isn't posted with every video description, so you may have to sort through a few to find the relevant information.
After watching more of News Busters I think the laugh track works it plays into the SNL crowd feel.
Before you decide that the comedy is bad based on a sound track you've gotta check out the rest of Busted News on youtube. I was with you at first on the laugh track I didn't like it in this video but after watching all of the other videos I think it gives it an SNL feel.
Then they should be.
Watch the rest of the series of News Busted, it's hilarious.
Someone took a shot at Clinton that didn't have Lewinsky in the punch line. "That's the best you can do?" blucas that's the only thing that satirical liberalist have been willing to make a punch line out of it's easy it's cheap and doesn't require much thinking. The best you can do, I have to laugh at that assertion. The smallest mistake of his presidency has already been hit by the left, that's how we know it didn't take much thought.
Pretty lame. Not really jokes, really annoying laugh track, didn't even crack a smile.
Really a deal killer, the message isn't funny because of a standard Holly Wood craft. I think if anything parodying the messages we get from Holly Wood or anywhere else amplifies the humor.
What would make you crack a smile? What is a real joke?
Yes, and from what I heard, you couldn't crack a cheek after eating three bowls of chile.
No wonder you are so fat.
I disagree. I give them points for trying and I wish them well, but I think it's a huge mistake for conservatives to grade other conservatives on a curve. Are we really going to excuse sloppy writing and amateurish presentation on the basis that somehow conservatives aren't ready for better humor? Who does that help? All that does is get conservative humor and conservatives labelled as being out of touch or unfunny.
Seriously, ask yourself, if these had been liberal jokes would you have found the presentation, the delivery, or the writing at all worthy of a passing grade? Would you even consider going back for a second viewing? I doubt it. And if we won't accept it from liberals or non-political types, why accept it from conservatives? — and by accept, I mean lavish unwarranted praise.
As for the Chicago joke. Listen to the joke again. The subject of the sentence is the city of Chicago. Yes, you can understand fairly quickly what is meant, but it's not good writing when your audience has to assemble your meaning. The other jokes have similar problems, sloppy language and weak links between subject and punchline.
Now that's funny. Joel. Hey, posters…what Dave is getting at is a good question. What are some other good sources of conservative comedy? I personally like Newsbusted very much. I also like The Peoples' Cube. It's amazing. What do you guys like?
BTW – Newsbusted has almost 9,000 subscribers. Not bad.
Comedy is comedy. Damn if any one person understands it.
Yeah, liberal stuff is laugh till you cry funny. No, I mean when you realize what they're saying you really start crying.
A laughtrack? Do I really need to be told when to laugh? I'm not liberal, I can think for myself!
Your killing me Andrew, however, I'm open to your views. I appreciate the fact that you don't want to grade on a curve. Everything though is based on a curve right wrong or indifferent. I can't change that nor can any other individual. It's up to the public at large to change that perception of how we test individuals.
Conservatives labeled unfunny and out of date is not anything new. It's more the mantra of the left to silence any right leaning comedian. I don't think that's what your trying to do though I think your trying to raise the bar of satirical humor. I can appreciate that.
News Buster isn't the Dennis Miller of intellectual comedy for certain but at least it's a step. I'd never heard of News Busters before and for a little sophomoric humor I appreciate it. I'm not trying to give it any great two thumbs up and it can't be missed. I just think that among all the other liberal comedic enterprises out there, it's nice to see one starting out with a conservative slant.
We should be truthful about it's level of comedic persuasion for certain but I don't want to turn conservatives off to it at the same time. If you watch more of it on youtube I think you'll find yourself laughing a little more. I did, then again I'm drunk so who knows……
Too on-the-nose, too. Of all the punchlines you could go with for that Clinton thing, "We'd all be speaking Arabic"? That's the best you can do? These are just, like, C-list blog talking points, not jokes.
Y'all should write some punchlines for that one. I bet they'd be better.
She's no script girl.
Hallelujah – I was starting to think I was the only person that was able to squeeze out a laugh for it. I think everyone is sitting waiting for the Bush bashing. When it doesn't show up they are confused.
Yeah… I guess we have to own up for this one. It's pretty bad.
On a sidenote, it could have potential if they remove the laughtrack.
My favorite was the ACLU slam.
I love "Newsbusters". OK, so some of the jokes fall flat. BFD. Others are fantastic.
Dana,
Yes, it is still valid. Write a short joke, if they use it, $50.00.
As I said upthread, Newsbusters is where I usually hang out, it is a good site, all media, so if you like to see that sort of thing, then it's there. Most of the jokes are pretty basic on the NB site, so please write some good ones, folks! Maybe they will ditch the canned laughter if enough people say they dislike it.
Reason TV is pretty good. It is the libertarian site with Drew Carey. Some funny clips there from time to time. A couple are up right now. People's Cube is funny, also. I personally like The Onion. Not liberal to the point of being gross, and sometimes they get in some good lines.
Conservatives are at a disadvantage when it comes to making fun of the Left — just as the Lefties are at a disadvantage when it comes to talk radio. Wouldn't it be interesting if the Right wingers started yowling about a "Fairness Doctrine" in comedy, i.e. Letterman had to give one anti-Obama joke this year for every anti-Bush joke he made in the first year of Bush's presidency, and so on.
The laugh track was distracting, but this is a good start. Letterman et al are not going to make fun of "The One" any more than they'll make fun of Mohammed and for the same reasons-sacrilegious.
I would like to see Fox Television NOT FOX NEWS, FOX TV, hire a talented comedian who isn't afraid to poke fun at Democrats and Obama and give him/her a late night TV show. I believe there is a talented comedian — can't remember his name — who posted on Dirty Harry's place and posts here occasionally – who works in Ho'wood, who would be perfect. He could use the format Leno and Letterman use, i.e. interviewing guests. I'd love to see him reprise Joaquin Phoenix's interview with Letterman. I wonder what Phoenix would do. Letterman made him the butt of a lot of jokes. I wonder if JP wouldn't like to get some of his own back by "discussing" Letterman. It would be a great show and you can bet my TIVO would be locked on.
A question off subject. Do Trolls have assignments kind of like the military rotating in and out of Iraq? We get a troll here who posts a lot of troll sheist for a few days or even a week, then he or she is "rotated" out of the "theatre" and a new troll pops out from under the bridge.
no different than what Leno and Letterman do!
Steven Crowder is out right hilarity! Dennis Miller it goes with out saying. Ann Coulter is irreverently funny. Thanks for the Peoples Cube I'd never heard of it. Of course what ever a liberal posts is also good humor…..or so I think that they are trying to be funny because if they are trying to be serious God help us all.
"A question off subject. Do Trolls have assignments kind of like the military rotating in and out of Iraq? We get a troll here who posts a lot of troll sheist for a few days or even a week, then he or she is "rotated" out of the "theatre" and a new troll pops out from under the bridge."
It's a burnout issue. It's tough getting your ass handed to you for more than a week.
Dave, I think you and I agree in large part. I am not trying to turn them off by any means, nor am I saying that we need to only do great work or no work. I think what they've done is a nice START and I'd like to see them continue to grow — though I suggest several minor changes.
What troubles me are the number of people posting (like Underling and Growltiger on the next page for example) who seemed to excuse the faults of the piece on the basis that somehow it's hard for conservatives to do humor. They seem to be implying that we should grade them on a curve because of that. That bothers me on many levels.
First, it accepts the liberal thought police view that conservatives are not capable of humor. That's just not true and we should never accept that, even implicitly.
(cont)
Second, to the extent that we rave about B-level humor, we are backing up that stereotype. It becomes easy to say, gee stick with liberalism, see what those conservatives think is funny, they don't have a clue?
Third, how does it help these folks to get better if, rather than providing constructive criticism, we just pat them on the head and say 9 out of 10 — when we would probably grade it 4 of out 10 if we didn't agree with the message. Would you tell your kids "great job" if they brought home a lousy essay or would you suggest ways to improve?
Fourth, to the extent people have implied that we should find it funny because of the "message" rather than the inherent commedy of the piece, that's advocating propoganda in my books. If it's funny, it stands on its own (left, right or center) without the need for political conformity. After all, aren't we on this website because we'd like to see conservative values re-enter the entertainment culture? How does it help to do a piece that is only funny if you agree with the "message."
(cont)
My comments are an attempt to point out that group think on the right is no better than group think on the left. Other than that, I've tried to point out some of the flaws (IMO) with the work, flaws which I think can be overcome to improve the work. So don't take my criticisms as opposition, they're meant as constructive criticism.
Now that's funny. Sadly I've heard that some liberal groups actually pay trolls to post on conservative sites. The only thing good about that is that I've heard about libs listening to Rush to complain about him then becoming converted when they realize how much sense he makes.
I sorta like these: http://www.scrappleface.com (Scott Ott) and http://www.dailygut.com (Greg Gutfeld and his evil minions)
I like Jody Miller and her sarcastic humor. Even lame TV comedies have laugh tracks, so what's the big deal?
she was great. is she single? how about a 6ft 215lb ripped 50yr old with no gray. come on honey make my day. got a villa in italy overlooking the med on a hill for 2 months. bathing suits optional!!
I chuckled twice…lottery tickets and the mountain dew line, the rest of that was….not funny?
I like MRC in general, but this needs some work. Trying to imitate the Daily Show/Colbert/SNL format of rattling off news-story related one-liners may be a fruitless task, even if the writing were more sharp. This type of format has been done from a left-leaning standpoint for so long that the stereotypes of conservatives are well-known: they're either evil, greedy, feckless, or repressed homosexuals, and there's no need for their target audience to have that explained to them. That makes it easier to do the comedy haikus structured on 1) a story's headline, 2) a detail from that story, and then 3) the punchline. When conservative comedy tries to do this, even if the joke works in theory, a lot of times the reaction will be confusion, because they don't share the assumptions we do that make the joke funny. The joke's over before they understand what happened.
Good luck with the web pieces, but I think this is going to be a tough job to pull off.
I see where you are coming from and I commend you for it. I agree that they could raise the bar of humor a notch or two or perhaps three. I just feel that some of the comments here while rational should also take in the notion of a new "fledgling" idea; conservative humor. That's all, I don't want to turn people off to NewsBusters because it falls short of the 10 out of 10 level. I appreciate that they are at least giving it a go. Which so many in comedy are not.
Talk about sailing over the head of the clueless.
This is a PARODY. Get it, its a take on the Main Stream Media and it is MEANT to not be taken a legitimate newscast.
Also for all the clueless out there, they have been producing these for several years now and I for one find it a lot more topical and entertaining that SNL.

Agreed.
Being a lot more topical and entertaining than SNL isn't really saying much these days. I also didn't think the humor was well done, and could have been delivered much better. I think it would help a lot if the speaker acted more like a news caster and less like a comedian, like you see in the Onion.
Ah, Red Eye.
If irreverent commentary were an elevator I'd enter Greg Gutfeld and Bill Schultz at the same time and go up and down on them and then, when I was good and ready, push the right button and get off.
Nice.
I've been unable to access the comments section in the new "News Busted" post, perhaps because of my critical comment above. I just wanted to compliment them on the "guest murderer" line, which was pretty good.
Is this Jodi Miller originally from NJ and went to East Stroudsburg, PA college? I think she was my college roommate?
