Eating Lunch Alone. A Republican In Hollywood.
by Ernie MannixFade In. Dolly in.
We see me, a man that serves in a important creative supporting role, seated at a meeting attended by executive powers of a most important television show. My head is down, pencil plowing away into the yellow legal pad in my lap.
The creative instructions being deftly administered by the executive powers are paused just for a moment. It’s time for the real work, for it is close to election day.
Lob. The first political volley of the morning is launched by one of the powerful ‘persons’ in the room. I keep my head down and underline several previously written sentences actually trying to remain focused on the technical task that feeds my children.
As I am underlining, I hear just about every other word of the statement, then only raise my head when the laughter starts.
The lobbed statement:
“Bush… blahblah blah,… moron… blah blah blah,… red states,,, blah blah blah… morons…
The sycophantic laughter and response from the underlings:
Oh hooo hooo hooo. Yesssss we knoooow.
I grip anger with my mouth in sort of a resigned smile. I’m angry not at their opinion, but at the arrogance of thinking that everyone in the room, and or that matter in Hollywood,… well, okay, the state of California; thinks as they do. I don’t respond. I certainly don’t betray my convictions, but, I don’t respond. Some of you might think that is cowardly. You might be partially correct, but with a family that depends on me, I just pick and chose my conversations where the audacity of my political opinions at least won’t be relegated to the pigeonholed compartment of Nazism and or racism.
When I do enter into one on one discussions, it’s usually in the parking lot, begun after someone from the other side sees a political bumper sticker on my family car. After the too often: “Ernie! You’re a musician! How could you be a Republican!? (As if creativity is reserved for liberals only.) I generally smile, ignore their prejudice, and engage them in some great conservative principles like;
1. Freedom of opinion.
(This engages them, but then confuses them, as my opinion is assuredly not theirs. Their eyes start to wander looking for way out of this uncomfortable talk.)
2. Protection of my children (and this most important television show) with a strong national defense.
(They eagerly scan the horizon looking for a more important person to have lunch with.)
And I usually lower the boom by asking if they have any understanding or appreciation of what those basic principles are. Usually, in a one on one, they say, “Well in a way…sure…”
I smile, extend my hand, and welcome them to the Republican party.
Alas, once again – I am eating lunch alone.
During the presidential election of 2000 and the ensuing chad war, I participated in the demonstrations down at the Federal Building in Los Angeles. It was a standard demonstration except for the fact that it was attended by a good amount of Republicans. In fact, in the beginning of the day it’s looked as though we really outnumbered the other side. NPR had a reporter down there and was doing a story on nontraditional Republicans, – what ever that means. She interviewed several of us. The woman was kind and gentle, but looked a little befuddled that we as a species even existed.
However the biggest befuddlement of the day was reserved for those on the other side. It seems several of the protesters on the liberal side were outraged that an African American man and I were walking together side by side carrying signs for our side.
One of the supposedly open minded tolerant bunch singled him out and yelled; “You should be ashamed of yourself walking with them!”
I wheeled on him and requested if the reason should be ashamed was that he was African American?
“He should be ashamed of himself!!” again was his retort.
“You mean he is not allowed to belong to our party because of his race?”
“Yes! You Republicans are all damned racists!”. The clown shouted.
My friend just looked at me and shrugged his shoulders. I was trying to regain my composure so as to not have my shoulders use the arms below them.
If you think there is a liberal agenda in Hollywood, you are so very correct.
Liberals enforcing their ideas and agenda into television and movies is fairly commonplace. The producers are the ones in control of the show and feel it is their moral duty to educate the rest of us lowly morons with their take on; politics, religion, and sexual orientation.
Countless times I have been privy to the not so subtle attempt at reeducation for the red states. Once we were previewing a show, and the producer paused the tape and showed us the strategically placed picture of Dick Cheney in the office of the evil heavy on the show. Chuckles about the room… broken pencil point on my legal pad.
On a recent movie, the foreign born director of this American film chose to portray his openly hostile anti-American feelings through his choice of songs with lyrics taking us and our way of life to task. (Meanwhile collecting his paycheck from one of our horrible U.S. payroll companies.)
Another time I was the music director of an awards show that featured one of the last appearances of Charlton Heston. Before we began taping, I introduced myself as a fellow Republican. He was pleased. But then when introducing my wife I said; “Mr. Heston this is my wife, she was a liberal, but I have wooed her over to our side. She now votes Republican.’ His eyes widened as he shook her hand heartily and with his singular very deep Charlton Heston voice bellowed; ‘Now that’s the stuff!”
I don’t meet many other Republicans out here. When I do, I usually have to divine that they are one of us from their comments and demeanor. Recently a woman was in a group of folks I was meeting with at a San Fernando Valley watering hole. A friend in the group was questioning why I was voting for McCain and not the genius liberal invention from Chicago.
After fending off most of the “you’re kidding me!?” comments I saw this woman smugly smile at me. My red-state-radar was functioning, and with that glance I knew, she was a cast-off like me. I approached her when the others weren’t looking and asked: “You’re a Republican aren’t you?
“How did you know?!
The woman works on another most important television show. She’s a behind the scenes person like me. The sad part of it was she was so concerned at being found out that she swore me to secrecy. Wow.
She all but said it would absolutely ruin her career if the folks on her show found out. We traded stories, and the single most common thread that was shared was the arrogance of the left. However, my conversation with her confirmed the frightened timidness of the right.
I’m obviously not as timid, and guess I’d rather eat lunch alone than have to choke on my food when all the Republican bashing starts. So liberals, If you see a lonely guy sitting in the commissary eating a tuna tandwich with avocado (tip: Universal makes the best tuna sandwich), come over and say hello and you just might broaden your open-minded horizons. I am not a Nazi, a racist or a war monger. I am a father, a husband and a proud American who wants to support and protect his family . I am a man who believes in true equality for all, …yes, even for us Republicans.

Earnie, keep your chin up, keep fighting, keep talking and explaning why you are Republican. People truly don't understand that being a Republican or in my case a Conservative is we believe in freedom. True Freedom. Freedom that is our God given right and afforded to use by our Bill of Rights. Earnie you are not eating your lunch alone because you are joined by the millions of other Republicans or Conservatives who may be in the same situation you find yourself in.
Jay Black, you obviously don't read very well. Ernie gave a very specific example, the one about the photo of Dick Cheney, strategically placed in the office of the bad guy. (Reminds me of Clear and Present Danger, a decent action film that is almost ruined for me by the jellybeans on the desk of the evil President, to remind all and sundry of You-Know-Who.)
I lived in So Cal for 30 years. People in the movie industry are generally narcissists. That is why they support the left. They are elitists and their way is the only way. The GOP represents more old fashion values that they generally don't share. So in order to let the Hollywood elite, a) bring homosexuality into the mainstream when they only constitute 3% of our society, b) fight to reduce drug laws, and c) drive religion out of our country, when 95% of the public believes in God, they will give up the financial well being of the entire country and our effect on the world. That is just ridiculous. I see all those people in Hollywood as insane. Narcissism has to be a disease that you treat by slapping the person in the face repeatedly, and saying "You are no better than anyone else". Do that until they give in. Afterwards you can have an intelligent discussion about economics, and they will convert. Liberal economics policies kill millions of people every year across the world, because of misguided decisions.
Great story, Ernie. Keep on rockin’ and being true to your convictions.
From one proud father, husband, and American to another.
Brilliant. I have such a difficult time trying to understand the double think that goes into liberals proclaiming tolerance for everything except Republican’s — that someone because the conservative ideals are different they are worthy of scorn, anger and even violence.
Nice work, brother.
Mr. Mannix,
If I ever make it to Hollywood, I’d be delighted to have lunch with you.
Thanks for the piece.
Ernie,
Thank you sharing. I work for a very liberal non-profit in Boston and I too have to bite my lib when they start to attack Bush or any republican for that matter.
There is a guy here who has a picture of che in his cube and it is disgusting. But if I put a picture of Sara or Mccain or Mike Huckabee, I would be considered a closed minded right wing nut.
From another proud father, husband and American.
As a business school professor, I found comfort in your discussion about staying in the closet, the secret handshake and other elements of camouflaging my true feelings. (Then one of our MoveOn.org administrators sent an email “For the Republicans among us,” emailing to each of us by name).
Graham Nash and CSN&Y have it exactly backwards. It’s important to “Teach Your Children Well,” not because they will someday discover your bitterness and cynicism, but so they can retain your idealism and knowledge of what is right and wrong.
“If you think there is a liberal agenda in Hollywood, you are so very correct.”
Your piece runs 1000 words and yet not once does it offer any specifics on what, exactly, the liberal agenda is. In fact, the one place you might have enlightened us on the subject you decided to let us fill in the blanks ourselves by writing “blah blah blah.”
I think you’re probably right in the sense that most creative people tend to be left leaning, but I still don’t understand how this actually _affects_ what we see on TV and in the movies.
If you could illuminate the following with something other than anecdotal evidence, I’d be much more sympathetic to your arguments:
1. What is the “liberal agenda”?
2. Specifically, how is this felt in the product produced (specific examples other than, of course, overtly political shows like “The Daily Show”, etc.)?
3. How is this bad for America?
Thanks in advance for your insight.
Do any of you guys see the irony here? You complain on this thread about having to keep your true feelings hidden, but on virtually every other thread on this board, you’re loudly demanding that people that YOU politically disagree with need to say silent.
Ignorance and Fear- Great “Salt of the Earth” ideals. Arguing as the lone liberal in a room full of you open minded consevatives produces a similar result. Strong National Defense? Come on… Billions wasted and thousands dead in Iraq and the constitution is ribbons- how strong are we now? Ecuador could invade us now thanks to Republican mismanagement and the National Guard (Now serving in Iraq) couldn’t stop them.

Sorry about spelling I’m a public school victim
I would be a great script set in Moscow or better Belarus ( look it up) most of the cast are self important stanch party loyals ( their leader is player by Alec Balwin )but there are a few independant thinkers in the group, ( Maybe a Kelsey Grammer type) but should their desent be known it’s off to the unemployment line. So they keep quiet least discovered by the pompas thought police. Fun episodes could envolve “trying to shut those “idiots” up on talk radio”. ” getting rid of those pesky secrete ballots for union work place votes” side plots could envolve lovable blind unquestioning members of the press. Just think the thrill up the leg episode! humm who can we cast as Barney Frank?
FANTASTIC! Thanks for the hard work, Ernie!
Ho…ho..ho…Joe the Plumber, what a “witty” script. Maybe you could also write a script about how the “darkies just don’t know their place” and maybe have your characters go out gay-bashing.
Hey, how much money did American Carol pull in?
Great post! Would you like a Link Exchange with our new blog COMMON CENTS where we blog about the issues of the day???
http://www.commoncts.blogspot.com
I used to be a liberal too … back during my college days, prior to becoming personally responsible for myself and having developed a little bit of “practical” wisdom (for instance: people appreciate more, what they must work for, etc.) You are obviously a real paradox to most of the people out there, you’re “creative” yet “conservative.” They think only someone who’s a liberal, unicorn-riding, flower-love-child wearing flowing skirts and huge clanging gypsy beads and being open to and tolerant of even murdering terrorists, gotta have a CHE shirt, can be “creative” or “artistic.” One of the main factors which caused me to convert to conservatism was the AWARENESS of the real HYPOCRISY of the liberals. The double standards. Whether they’re celebrities or not, every single liberal I know is a hypocrite. I say this b/c one has to think a certain way to BE a liberal … it’s a mindset and worldview from which they approach everything. And, they, as we all are now seeing, ARE the most rigid and narrow-minded and snobbish people of all. Stay strong! I think a few more people might join you at the lunch table sometime soon.
Joe the Screenwriter – I happen to know you’re a child rapist. Don’t ask me how I know, I just know. You habitually rape children. Now, why should anyone discuss any ideas you may have about politics? Obviously you are far too great a degenerate monster for any of your opinions to be logically considered. Better to dismiss you completely because, after all, you rape children.
See how it works, Einstein?
Reminds me a lot of my college experience. You got good grades and lofty accolades from professors if you were liberal, or just didn’t disagree. But make yourself known…..I protested the Conservative-equals-nazi meme in one class and the professor rolled her eyes and said, “Oh right, I forgot Jaci’s in here.”
I’d be proud to eat lunch with you whenever I make it back out to California!
Joe the screenwriter…
‘Joe the Plumber’ said nothing about rascism or sexual orientation in his post, therefor I can only assume you inserted it as an as hominem attack intended to shame and silence your opposition. Open your mind, sir, your tactics smack of fascism.
As for ‘An American Carol’, it was maladroit and lukewarm funny, but it WAS an attempt to stand up to the conventional wisdom. Halting and meagre, maybe, but an honest attempt. If we are very, very fortunate, it will pave the way for more such attempts until popular culture is suffused with them to the same extent as it is by the efforts from the left.
Or does that free exhibition of ideas in a free marketplace frighten you and threaten your ideology?
This goes back to a line that I read on this site: Tolerance is not a position, it is the attitude with which you treat those whose positions you hate.
Jay Black,
If you don’t know what the “liberal agenda” is, maybe you should, uh, move on. I think EVERY person that reads any blogs or papers or watches anything on TV knows what that agenda is. Have you seen the “green” ideas thrown around EVERY channel from ABC to MTV to The Cartoon Network as if global warming is fact BECAUSE the actors say it is? Warming or cooling should NOT be political, as it is, it should be scientific. The most respected scientists are being ignored or de-funded daily by all of these networks (even, gasp, FOXNEWS) except the couragous Lou Dobbs. Thousands upon thousands of scientists are lining up to speak about the dangers of COOLING (the left has now altered their wording to “climate CHANGE”) which is far, far more dangerous than warming (see Holcene period). I’m sure Mr. Black that since you are liberal you can’t see what you agree with, but if Oliver Stone’s “W” was more of a tribute than a mockery, you would feel as the writer does. Imagine all, or most, TV shows applauding abstinence, while mocking abortions. How about most shows celebrating the military as “24″ does, instead of the fictional trash like “Rendition” that are blatant lies about raping and pillaging Iraqis (ask Jack Murtha how the whole Haditha thing us going since all accused were acquitted)? So stop playing dumb or, at least, stop BEING dumb and open your eyes, ears, and mind. Like someone (Churchill?) once said, “Minds are like parachutes: they only work when they are open.” Bravo to our conservatives in Hollywood for standing up when needed. Keep up the great site Breitbart!
Thanks for a great post. I have the same experience in my world of friends, can’t talk politics or i’ll get an ear full of how evil the Republicans are. Actually, 9/11 woke me up big time and am now a “recovering Democrat”.
I think most far left liberals in this country would love to have Fidel Castro or Hugo Chavez for President, maybe Obama will satisfy their dream.
As posted above, you are not having lunch alone.
My point about American Carol is that your formula of conservative=acceptable art certainly didn’t hold up there. Yes, the box office is a free market. All sorts of movies that you find unacceptable for no other reason than you dislike the personal politics of the actors in them do just fine and dandy at the box office. Why? Because they are good movies. Did you boycott The Departed because of Dicaprio and Baldwin? So what, it made over $100 million at the B.O. and won Best Picture.
I’ve worked in both the entertaiment and news industry and have experienced the same things. It always amazes me when someone who is avowedly Left becomes indignant and claims there isn’t any leftist/liberal bias in the media. If you work in that environment everyone always automatically assumes you must be liberal because in fact, there might be one person in five hundred that isn’t. As such, they will always speak quite openly about their distain for republicans and conservatives (usually in the most vile lanquage.) If you dare express an opinion otherwise you will be harassed to the point of making it impossible to do your job. It’s like being in high school except that your livelyhood is on the line. There are always a few extremist loud mouth a**holes that do the harassing, the rest keep their heads down and go along so as not to be singled out themselves. I found it so distasteful I eventually quit the industry.
I remember after the ‘04 election when Chris Matthews suggested sending a foreign correspondent to the Midwest to try and find out how Bush won. That was the first time I heard big media actually admit they’ve stopped doing their job: To accurately inform the American people. The sad thing is, this past election has proven to me that big media has totally abdicated any near appearance of unbiased reporting. Anne Coulter’s “banning” from NBC and the hissy fit that was given to explain the reasoning behind it shall do nicely as “Exhibit A”. I’m not even going to mention Hollywood or NYC for that matter…The best I can do is pray for two earthquakes!
Joe B
Joe the sreenwriter dont need the facts he just lives his own fiction and promotes the big lie.
like a good NAZZ…. oops Liberal.
I also get How Can you be Gay and Consertive? from jerks like him.
Just that being 6 1 and 300 lbs they rarely push the issue .
Now I must go now me and my buddies need to go straight bashing.
only libs though.
What ever happened to ORAL GROOVE? Ernie, great to find you here. I was in school with your brother Joe in DC. You guys rocked the house. Glad you are still involved in the music scene. Congrats on the success, and I hope the fallout from this is not too bad. Hope you, your family and all the boys are doing well. Chris S
Ernie. Glad to see there is a voice of sanity in Hollywood. Your story strikes close to home. I work in a very liberal environment as well, and here the Bush bashing on a daily basis. Most people know my views but that doesn’t stop the streaming video/audio of anti-republican rhetoric.
Liberals are becoming the most racial and intolerant portion of America.
This site rocks. Reading pieces like this make me feel less alone in my field, education.
Ahhhhh…
My son is in college in California and being the “redneck” mo’ fo’ from Alabama that he was brought up to be, he’d be honored to have lunch with you. He is a student rep at a college not to be named and tells me funny tales of the young, mind numbed robots who pass for caring, compassionate liberals. He says their arguments have no legs, just emotions. Pitiful, just pitiful, like Uncle Jed used to say. The Prop 8 feedback from him was a doozy!!
Remember that you are NEVER alone if you believe!!!
I can never think of a studio commissary without remembering the classic Warner Bros. commissary pie fight in Blazing Saddles.
Liberals are experiencing a time where they feel they have the wind at their backs. They have soundly won the 2008 elections and have convinced themselves that this is somehow a permanent change in this country. Senator Harry Reid said exactly that after the election. Interesting enough, this is history repeating itself. We’ve heard this all before and will again by others who don’t see the American electorate as Harry Reid does. The unfortunate side effect of all of this pride in politics is they lose sight of many of those things that contributed to their win. Decades ago, liberals would compare conservatives to Nazis in stifling dissent. That is precisely what liberals are doing today. We see it in Ernie’s article above, we see it in Nancy Pelosi’s recent changing of Congressional rules that allowed the minority party to draw up their own proposals, we see it in Pelosi’s call for passage of the ‘fair doctrine’ proposal, we see it in labor’s big push to block secret union ballots. These are all gestapo tactics in the extreme. This will also predictably lead to a landslide reversal at the polling place come 2010. Yes history is repeating itself. Surprising how people never learn. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Great piece Ernie. Although I am blue through and through I’ll STILL have lunch with ya!
Do you have Twitter set up to follow you.

Good Stuff
It amazes me how liberals so conveniently make conservate=anti-black jokes and yet completely skate over the fact that Abe Lincoln was a Republican. It wasn’t a Liberal that freed the slaves it was a republican. Wake up. You don’t have a monopoly on intellect or morality.
Frankly, I’d be willing to bet 95% of the “Pimps and ho’s”(which they endearingly call themselves) of all colors preaching drugs and sex in hollywood and music are liberals. Statistically the vast majority of those in jail are also liberal as are the majority of teen pregnancies to liberals. These are stellar achievements to be real proud of!
I lived in West Los Angeles for nearly 20 years and came across this Left/liberal fascism, in one way or another, almost every day. I recall meeting with friends with similar opinions and feeling a sense of relief that we didn’t have to censor what we said or that our opinions could lead to employment repercussions in the entertainment industry. This may sound melodramatic but those who’ve experienced would know exactly what I mean. However, the thing that really got me was their attitude that everybody thought the same and that any occassion, business or social, politics – their politics – would be the topic du jour. It was relentless.
I know this story well. I used to work in Hollywood and you learn to just keep your head down if you want to keep your job. It’s brutal. The worst part though was the sycophants who would profess to believe in whatever the Executive Producer believes in just to move up the job ladder– I doubt those idiots even knew what the hell they were talking about half the time. I don’t know how you stay in the industry. I live in NorCal now, in probably the last remaining conservative-leaning areas so I don’t always have to feel like the only Republican in the room. But it’s still slim pickings some times.
Interesting that these Hollywacked liberals call Republicans “Nazis” and “intolerant” yet anyone who is a Republican in Hollywood has to fear for their jobs and remain silent less they be cut off at the knees. Typical Democrites. They always accuse others of what they themselves are guilty of being.
Reminds me of growing up in an atmosphere where it was considered rude not to laugh at racist jokes.
Joe the Scriptwriter: That you think American Carol and The Departed are in the same cinematical category, and thus comparable side by side: Stupidity like yours is the reason we pay for maybe three movies in a year. One of them in ‘08 was American Carol. We laughed our booties off.
That’s the difference between us and you.
Mirror…so the difference between you and us is you “laughed your booties” off at American Carol. Well, not many of you laughed at that, did you?
The point about the Departed is that it’s pretty asinine to scream “boycott” at films because you don’t like the personal politics of the actor, even if the character isn’t doing anything particularly political. So, if you boycotted the Departed because of Alec Baldwin, then you missed a pretty entertaining film.
Thanks Ernie,
I look forward to hearing more. I live in a left leaning community where many of my friends don’t know my right side conservative opinions. It is tough on occasion but stories like yours makes me appreciate how “easy” I have it. Some day the pendulum will swing back. It alway does and this site will help make that time go by easier. Thanks again!
Yours is indeed a surrealistic world in which to live. My hat is off to you and your fellow conservatives as you nearly bleed to death biting your tongues. My head would explode.

I’m suddenly feeling very, very blessed to live in an enclave of conservativism (Ocala, FL) where I can BE a conservative and not have to pretend to be anything else. Even among the local theatre/arts crowd, there’s quite a mix of conservatives & liberals, and different viewpoints are tolerated and even discussed civilly. I’ll be praying for you folks living out there in Hollywood. And as others have said, Mr. Mannix, you aren’t alone.
I have a t-shirt of Che in his heroic pose.
Underneath is a single word, “Muerto.”
Dear “Stuck In The Middle”
You said…
“Arguing as the lone liberal in a room full of you open minded conservatives produces a similar result.”
First off, tell me an industry that conservatives / Republicans control?
Although I can’t say it has never happened, I think your comment is pure speculation: No doubt you think we would treat you the same way you would treat us (poorly). This theory of your is incorrect. Conservatives and Republicans typically try to convince people like you to see our way by 1) letting out lives serve as an example, 2) by friendship, 3) by trying to convince you with facts. Liberals typically just choose to beat up, bad mouth, and black list those who don’t agree with them. I too work in Hollywood and have witnessed this many times.
You said:
“Strong National Defense? Come on… Billions wasted and thousands dead in Iraq and the constitution is ribbons- how strong are we now?”
Since when do liberals care about our soldiers dying? I seem to recall soldiers being spit at and being called “baby killers” by liberal loonies after the Vietnam conflict. This attitude had not changed. Liberals are more than willing to sacrifice soldiers lives as long as it is for a liberal cause?
Constitution in ribbons? Since when do liberals care about the Constitution? Answer: NEVER. Unless you can use a false Constitutional argument to destroy our nation or to protect some made up right such as gay marriage or abortion. You also like to wrongly argue Constitutional points such as… “separation of church and state”, these words which doesn’t even exist in the Constitution.
You want to see Constitution shredding… you guys just elected Constitution enemy number one as President. Get ready.
The deal is you hate America and everything wholesome that it stands for. You will not be happy until it is destroyed. You are sick and want everything destroyed that reminds you just how sick you are.
Jay Black – Part of the problem with liberals is that they always deny facts, to justify their position. I have debated liberals my entire life, and have yet to meet more than a handful who can argue why they are liberals. I will make my example with your post.
If you truly do not understand how TV and the media can be detrimental to society then you need some help. The Daily Show. I am a non-religious republican. I am all about economics period. I love John Stewart. But i always read and watch things from the other side as well. I read information about both parties. The Daily Show is bad because many people, we call them ’sheeple’ don’t do that. They use the Daily Show for their news about politics. That news is certainly slanted in favor of the left. It points out few if any flaws, or mistakes made by the left. The general media glosses over bad issues. Republicans go to jail, and Democrats are hardly investigated.
If you vote for the left you are in denial about why you do so, unless you are a socialist.
Another example. The let talks about the Constitution, but does everything that can to tear it down. DId you know our founding fathers all said that big government is the worst thing possible? Did you know Thomas Jefferson said that when the government preys on the people to survive, that the death of the country is not far away.
Ernie:
So the point is tolerance runs both ways (End Title:)?
Hmmmm.
Is referring to Obama as “the genius liberal invention from Chicago” a sign of your tolerance? If so, I must be missing the point. One of my high school teachers taught me the best way to minimize someone you dislike is to refuse to refer to him or her by name or with respect. Kinda like referring to him or her as “that one” or “the genius liberal invention from Chicago.”
You’re welcome to eat at my table just as soon as you figure out what tolerance is and start practicing it. Until then, eat lunch alone.
Ernie,
Major props for gritting your teeth in order to keep your family right side up. I come at this from a bit of a different perspective, that of an ABC. That’s an Anti Bush Conservative. I hope that some liberals are reading because they are so unable to conceive of the nuances of things that they probably don’t know such a thing exists. I’d like to say something gracious or positive about liberals, er ‘progressives’, but there just isn’t anything. At best they are puny minded smart asses, who replace sound bites and slogans for actual thought processes. At worst, they are vicious, mean-spirited, vindictive and in certain instances, prone to physical violence. If Obama does indeed try to tack a course to the political center and apply pragmatic thinking to his job, you will see the left turn on him with a vengeance. It’ll make Blagovich’s tirade about him sound like Sunday School stuff.
Ernie –
You’re not the only one. Much of my family is encapsulated in the liberal world of entertainment in Hollywood, though, offer the most conservative of beliefs. My cousin and uncle, both, are grips, running grip companies working for the studios. My cousin working on a Very Important Show to support his family has to answer to the question of – Christian? Really? Why?
Interestingly enough, though, they share a very good insight into why Hollywood is so liberal. With so much money and arrogance, they can’t help but feel bad. So then comes the need to reach to the first clown to offer a way to “give back.” It’s a sad thing, Hollywood.
I live in central Cal, frequent the LA area and would be happy to have lunch with you and share conservative ideas at will.
You’re a good man; keep it up.
Ernie, If your eating alone well try eating with the below the line folk. I work on a top ten show and there a lot of republicans here. And were happy to eat with you-anytime.
As for liberals in Hollywood. I never can figure out why they support the left wing causes. After all if their agenda ever came to pass they would be the first to be silenced and lose the most. Actors and artist are the least respected in the socialist societies.
Bravo. When I make it to Hollywood, hopefully as a writer, I will look out for you and the quiet ones. It’s a similar environment at my college. I feel your pain.
We need our own money, and lots of it.
Isn’t that what it really comes down to? This is supposed to be a web site about “changing the culture of Hollywood.” Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but everyone seems to forget: that is not going to happen by blogging.
We need to produce and distribute our own movies that are as good or better than anything coming from the left.
Unless that happens, we’re wasting our time on this blog. We need to pitch, give and take notes, write, re-write, cast, hire, shoot, edit, and market our own movies. We have to be self-contained, because the left is not going to help us.
All it takes is money. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of filthy-rich “conservatives” who can finance a film without any trouble at all – if they want to. And I am not talking about a $350,000 budget for a feature. I’m talking about a real budget, a full crew, stars, top production values, and money left over to market it.
So, where’s the money? What it really comes down to is that wealthy “conservatives” who can help us actually don’t want to. This is what makes the left crack up laughing. Ultimately, our side has little respect for the arts, and even less desire to put significant funds into something like a film. Conservatives want to grow their wealth, and keep it in their family.
Am I wrong? Prove it. I would like to see a spinoff from this site where people with contacts (most of the contributors here) organize a good old-fashioned studio – and raise the money for it. If that doesn’t happen, I believe that means I’m right: our potential sources of funding are just not going to part with it, and we’re not going to take back Hollywood or even Venice.
Tolerance runs both ways? Oh, no, no, no: folks on the Left are decidedly incapable of tolerating debate, dissent or even the slightest deviation from their orthodoxy. From the Bolshevik/Menshevik split to the Membership First/United for Strength split, tolerance for those who think and believe differently is a one-way street: we’re supposed to tolerate them, but they’ll ostracize anyone on their side who tolerates us.
Great piece, and entirely accurate as I well know from many years of personal experience. America is a center-right country, and it still is, and there are a whole lot of moderate to conservative folks living in California, even Southern California. Can’t tell ‘em by searching for a bumper sticker but they’re are out there; The Guvernator is a Republican, moderate, yes, but Republican. And he’s an actor, one of the biggest, last I heard.
Nice column, Ernie. I think we tend to get too caught up in assigning courage (or lack thereof) to people about speaking out on their beliefs. Perhaps if everyone in Hollywood stood up for themselves rather than worrying about the consequences, things would change. Then again, perhaps people are just people who don’t want to be shunned, ridiculed, or risk having their livelihood damaged. I know I wouldn’t take some “brave” stance at my job if I thought it could lead to me losing it. It’s way easier to sit out here in the cheap seats and ask why someone is writing anonymously, or why people won’t stand up for themselves in public. The truth is, most of us wouldn’t, and I don’t know if that’s such a bad thing.
Great article and I am loving Big Hollywood, thanks Andew!
The thing that frosts me is that regardless of political persuasion a person can get a job with a conservative anytime. Conservatives don’t care about lip service, don’t care about platitudes. If you are competent you are the person for the job.
As a window cleaner I feel like you Ernie. I am feeding my family and just need to focus on the job at hand. Many times I am at a place of business or in a home and have to listen to the blatant bigotry from Democrats. Intolerant comments about morals, life, politics and negatives about the president. Yet, I am most certain if I speak up about how I feel I will eventually lose them as a customer. Because unlike the Republicans I know they do care about lip service, platitudes and will look for someone equally competent from their side.
I get so excited when I clean windows for people who share my politics and we can chat about that part of our lives.
Sincerely,
Jim

Liberalism is all over the place, and socially dominant, because it’s not about politics per se, but about class and culture. Liberalism is really status obsession with Hollywood, and particularly women in the professions, showing how “enlightened” they are and using particularly non-Whites as props.
What Spike Lee dubbed the “magical Negro” in films like “Green Mile” or “Bagger Vance” where magical Black guys show up to spiritually enlighten repressed and so on but “worthy” White guys is pretty much emblematic of Liberalism.
Black people and culture are not worthy subjects on their own, including their own flaws of racism, sexism, anti-gay feelings, and so on. Merely magical props in the endless status struggles among Wealthy White professionals.
It’s the counterpart to those Sub Zero Refrigerators and Granite Countertops.
Of course, most of the country has tuned out the results of this, culturally and so on. CBS, which for it’s entertainment offers mostly apolitical “crime time prime time” does well, since the ability to play against type/expectation (i.e. like Rob Thomas’s Veronica Mars, it’s not always the un-PC conservative who is the villain) creates surprise and suspense. Law and Order and it’s spin-offs on NBC are so boring because the PC villains (White businessmen) are so predictable and so are the dropping ratings.
Consider this — in a nation of 100 million LESS people (fully a third less), in 1968 the Beverly Hillbillies got viewers to the tune of 65 million. It was essentially apolitical but in touch with ordinary people’s views. Not status striving. Now American Idol is lucky to get 22 million viewers. Even with all that cable, there should be a lot MORE viewers than 65 million. Instead we get a third of what people were watching at that time, with a third more viewers potentially, forty one years later.
Conclusion: Liberalism, or Yuppie Status Striving, is destructive in getting audiences. This recession will see many Liberals ruined as their tales of Yuppie Status striving fall flat in hard times.

***Try working in the oil and gas industry in a red state. ~Laden~ with
conservatives. And if by “convincing people to see our way”, you mean things like the following dialogue: republican coworker, babbling on about clinton’s penis: “what? you don’t hate clinton? if you want to stay my friend, you can ~never~ discuss politics with me. why don’t you come to our bible reading at lunch? what, you’re an atheist? if you want to stay my friend, you can ~never~ discuss religion with me. i feel just absolutely terrible about you going to hell like that. i’ll pray for you.”, then yes, i suppose i see your point. and yes, that was a real conversation. i suppose that’s that “tolerance” people keep talking about.

***it appears you equate spit with death, tho i assume that’s not your intention. i would agree that all that ever really seems to change is the location of our conflicts, but many of us on the left aren’t happy about that. we’d prefer that the soldiers stay home, find a real job, quit living off the government (lol, ok, really, that “living off the gov’t” was a joke, i just couldn’t not make it).

***to some degree, you are correct. it’s ridiculous that we have to define specific rights within the constitution to protect the freedoms of specific individuals. if the conservatives would stop trying to limit freedom and if they’d leave medical procedures to doctors, it wouldn’t be an issue.
GLENN,
Bullseye. 10 points.
But the point of this site, I think, is first of all, to help everyone inside and outside of Hollywood to realize that we aren’t a squalid powerless minority.
If secondly we can manage to start building momentum and thirdly even setting up a studio or the like that would produce films that didn’t set out to trash America and everything that made it great, we’d drive the entire Hollywood system to the right trying to compete with us.
Because at its roots, Hollywood is neither blue nor red…it’s green.
Nothing provides juice in this town like piles and piles of money.
Therefore part of the answer is to stop forking it over to people that don’t share your values. The other part is to start looking for people who do, and bankrolling them. Even as simply as by buying a ticket or a DVD.
And as for a “Liberal Agenda” and what it is:
Let’s not play dumb.
If there’s anything traditional, decent, and generally accepted outside of both coasts, they’re against it. If it’s the opposite, they’re generally for it.
Traditional marriage? Of course not; premarital sex is the thing. Can anyone imagine a successful show with four young healthy females who WEREN’T getting laid like tile 7 days a week unless the stars were in diapers?
Homosexuals comprise <2% of the actual population, but in Hollywood shows, it’s 5 or 10 times that. And in Hollywoodland, they’re all smarter, funnier, and trendier than everyone else too.
In fact, name 5 shows top-tier TV shows that revolve around a traditional monogamous marriage and healthy family relationships.
Taxes? Of course you owe more, it’s the government’s money, not yours. (Of course, imagine if the feds slapped a $2 tax on movie tickets, and a 20% excise tax on networks’ revenue from commercials. Besides saving social security overnight, the screams from Hollywood would melt steel.)
Global warming? School vouchers? Gun ownership? Public expressions of Christianity (or Judaism)? Nuclear power? Drilling for oil? Cars powered by combustion? Abortion? Military defense? Capital punishment? Islamic (or any other branch of) terrorism? Illegal immigration?
C’mon, does anyone think there isn’t a “side” that Hollywood takes on every one of those issues, ad infinitum, ad nauseum, and usually if not invariably by making sure to paint any and all opposition as a bunch of red-necked, bitter, Bible-thumping gun-clinging banjo-playing jacktards with less teeth that IQ points, knuckles dragging on the ground, and a prehensile tail?
What’s worse, it isn’t simply the constant drumbeat of leftist nonsense and caricatured conservatism from sitcoms and dramas and late night comedy, it’s the bleedover of the same partisan crapola into supposedly unbiased “journalistic” productions like the news and current events shows, morning, noon, and night.
Ernie Mannix isn’t breaking any new territory here. He’s just giving you a travelogue from inside the cage with the 800 pound gorilla.
As Inspector Rennault would exclaim at Rick’s Cafe Americain,
“I’m shocked, shocked I say!”
Do the snarling liberals in the comments here realize that they are reinforcing the point? If you’re reading here, and you’re on the fence, just ask yourself – who would YOU rather have lunch with?
Mr. Mannix,
Awesome.
Thanks Ernie, for the very enlightening article from the hinterlands of Loonyland. I’ve was told that California was like a bowl of cereal; nuts fruits, and flakes….and I’ve never been interested to find out first hand. So it’s good to know that folks like you and Andrew are out there doing your part to bring forward this [formerly] well guarded, and well disguised conspiracy.
I live in Austin, TX; also a liberal bastion, and I am here to declare that Conservatives MUST stop living in fear of these nuts. I personally get alot of satisfaction with the reaction that a simple Palin/Jindal sticker gets from the libnuts here as they get literally inches from my car to read it. I LOVE IT that it makes them soooo outraged. The absolute best part though has to be the “no O” (an O with a red line through it). Often times they’ll cast a vicious look my way as they speed past to cut me off – I know, real compassionate. But still I LOVE IT!! I just love it.
P*ss on them (unless their on fire…). I know…give him a chance – NO! They can. Then they can run and hide when he gives them exactly what he said he would – universal misery.
I found this scary and sad. To think the Libs have not rooted out all the Republicans in Hollywood! We are in grace danger, my firends, from an entertainemtn and media elite that are Stalinists at heart, wholly intolerant of different opinions and making decent me like Mr. Mannix fearful for the well-being of his children simply for expressing his opinion. Let’s all just watch FOX and stay alway from the rest of the crumb bunnies!

As someone who lives on the west side and works in an educational branch of entertainment near Hollywood, I can totally relate to what you wrote. It was great to read that someone else has such a similar experience as mine. Indeed, one feels very alone at times. I hope we all get bold and start speaking out more.
I was so relieved to read this. I go through this regularly and feel alone. As a comedian, I have a past with democrat and libertarian leanings, but much like the caterpillar I have grown into a more knowledgeable and educated stance on the reality of life and warmly embraced conservative views. I couldn't have been more pleased with your article.
All the best!
How nice to know you’re here. Thanks for that.
