Dave, You’re Fired
by Eric GolubDear Mr. Letterman,
Several weeks ago I wrote you a heartfelt letter expressing my concern for the direction that your show was headed. I am sad to see that you have not only not reined in the nastiness, but that your spin cycle is now on viciousness overload.
Mr. Letterman, this is not about your liberalism. I was a fan of yours for 20 years, and put politics aside as my fellow Republicans abandoned your show in droves. I defended you sir, and I am now being forced to eat my words.
How dare you attack Sarah Palin’s family the way you have! How dare you sir!
Yes, I know you apologized, but only after the heat was turned up. Governor Palin accepted your apology, and I will as well. Yet it doesn’t change the fact that for too long you have been taking too many cheap shots at people who don’t share your political ideology.
You have a child yourself, and if I remember correctly, one that was conceived out of wedlock. You were not attacked for this. You even gushed when Oprah sent you a fruit basket, but now you are using your nightly platform to destroy a family. What human being does this?
You and others on the left seem to think that because Sarah Palin is a social conservative, and social conservatives preach abstinence, that her apolitical unwed teenage daughter giving birth to a beautiful child renders the entire family hypocrites. That disgusting argument is for another day. The beautiful Palin family is just a fraction of your problem. Your major problem Mr. Letterman, is you. You are entering your later years. You are losing market share. All empires fall, and all talent leaves the screen. The issue is whether they walk off the field, or are dragged kicking and screaming. It was one thing to consistently lose in the ratings to Jay Leno. Losing to Conan O’Brien will make you ill.
Yes, we all know Johnny Carson wanted you to be his successor. I backed you. I was wrong. I thought you were funnier than Jay Leno, but you were not Tonight Show material. Johnny Carson was not mean. Jay Leno was pleasant and fair. In fact, the criticism of him was that he was “too nice.” He was so nice that he said nice things about you, which did not seem to be reciprocated. Again, I say this as someone who watched your show, not his. As Conan O’Brien continues the trend of lighthearted comedy, you just get older, meaner, angrier, and nastier. If this is a strategy, it will backfire.
You see Mr. Letterman, the angry left already has two people desperately playing to the “hip, cool” crowd that most Americans find obnoxious. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert already have your audience. While Stewart is going down the same hateful path that you are, Colbert at least makes an effort to try and be liberal without being hateful.
Dave, you were good way back when because you were fresh and original. Now it is the same thing every night, except more hostile. Sure, there are always people willing to watch angry hatemongers rant and rave like lunatics in an asylum. Yet you Dave are obsessed with ratings. Have you seen the ratings of Keith Olbermann?
You did a very funny joke back in the 1990s contrasting your vacation with Bill Clinton’s vacation.
“While on vacation, members of Bill Clinton’s staff criticized his job performance and demanded that he resign. While on vacation, members of my staff criticized my job performance and demanded that I resign.”
Dave, you might wish to prepare to receive that gold plated CBS watch or fountain pen. Johnny Carson walked off under his own power, his numbers softening but his dignity still intact. You might wish to consider the same. Dave, everybody knows that you still worship Johnny Carson. You idolize him. He was your hero. You have said this many times. Well Johnny would never approve of your telling x-rated jokes about sweet young girls that deserve the protection that all private citizens deserve.
I notice that you do not make fun of the trials and tribulations of the children of Al Gore and Joe Biden, which are significantly more serious than that of Bristol Palin. Bristol Palin has not committed any crimes or broken any laws. I know you are too old to be familiar with Pink Floyd, but Dave, “Leave those kids alone.”
Dave, this is about more than ideological bigotry, which I have dedicated my life to fighting and ending. This is about the only thing that really matters after we are all gone, that being history. Don’t even pretend for one second that you don’t spend every waking minute worrying about your legacy. You are tarnishing yourself at an accelerating rate. This will not be forgotten unless you redeem yourself, and fast. Half-hearted, non-apology apologies are not going to cut it. Sincerity would be a good start.
Maybe you truly do not care what people think, but if that is the case, your downward spiral will rival Rosie O’Donnell and every other leftist grievance monster that cannot understand why the audience does not love their spreading of hatred. I have done everything I can do Dave, because I genuinely did care. Dave, I have to tell you that after observing Mr. O’Brien, you are not cut out to be my 11:35pm apprentice. You are just too hateful.
Mr. Trump is busy, and CBS is spineless, and the feminists are as hypocritically calculating as ever, but they do not run my household. I handle things for my viewing household.
Dave…You’re fired.

As Karnac might have said to Letterman, may the boot scrapings of the dung of a 1000 camels infrest the floor of your tent."
Seems like the only way to comment is use one word and then reply
hahahaha. What a day!
Very strong Eric! Johnny Carson was the man of late night Dave is a parody of himself. That young comedian that came out of the gate so strong is but a memory. One point however, Dave is the perfect age to know Pink Floyd they kicked off in 67-68, that line you used “teachers leave those kids alone,” was from the Wall around 1980. Great read Eric!
For some odd reason I can’t post one or two words on Leigh Scott post. Things seem to be back in order elsewhere?
Yes…but still glitches, I think. Funny, maybe they'll address it when they fix it b/c it was so disturbing. (saying it was "reviewing my post" etc.)
I miss Johnny.

Every time I see the new green background to BH, I keep thinking I'm missing some obscure Irish holiday. Is it my computer, a youth spent using hallucinogens, or is there in fact an awkward green background to the site now? Or is this for the purposes of solidarity with the Iranian people? If it's the latter, the epic fail of allowing KP to post on BH is now forgiven.

This letter was, in a way, too kind. And he'll burn it while he drinks a scotch on the rocks. Letterman is an elitist now. He is "above" the crowd and if we don't think he's funny it's because, well, "we are just too dumb to get it!" I loved it though.
I too watched Dave nightly, from his debut on NBC in '82 through his move to CBS in '93 and for a decade or so after that. I realized that I haven't watched him in years and it's not because of Leno. I just got tired of the constant belittling, the increasing antagonism, and the arrogant assumption that everyone who mattered agreed with him. Since I didn't matter I went away. I miss the Dave I remember, but I'm eager for this one to fade into useless trivia status (what show featured "Big-Ass Ham" as a regular sponsor?). Bye Dave, it was fun…once.
ps. I can't believe you proved Cher was right all along!
no green background here (in NY)
He never apologized for his "slutty flight attendant" comment. What an ass.
Good point that he had his child out of wedlock. I'd forgotten about that!
Dave, you're much too kind. I've watched him maybe 5 hours in 20-odd years. I agreed with others who recognized his meanness early on, and as others have noted it's probably why he didn't get "Tonight." I won't miss him when he's gone.
He's passed on! This horse is no more! He has ceased to be! He's expired and gone to meet his maker!
He's a stiff! Bereft of life, he rests in peace! His metabolic processes are now history! He's off the twig!
He's kicked the bucket, he's shuffled off his mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!!
THIS IS AN EX-HORSE!
But, if you makes you happy, keep on beating it.
The man ceased being funny years ago. It's like watching a cranky farty old man. Retire Mr. Geezer.
sorry: "…if it makes you happy…"
Are we still on this? Seems we are…..nice.
Had Dave Letterman made a joke about President Obama wife dress like a " slutty stewardess or that President Obama dresses like a" pimp pilot." CBS would have have fired him.
I long ago began to think Dave Letterman was a mean spirited mealy mouth would be entertainer. I havent changed my mind. Making a joke, or funny comment about what someone has done, or said is one thing. Making mean spirited comments about someone, and particularly about their childred is totaly unacceptable to me. So Dave, some evening, take the time to announce that you are retiring from the program to spend more time with your family in your unfunny declining years and salvage what following you still might have. By the way, you also sound and look kind of goofey much of the time lately, so go see your doctor for a check up.
Well said and ditto dat.
"leftist grievance monster"!!! I love it.
I remember during the later half of the 80's when I'd never miss Letterman. Even during the writers' strike, he managed to be funny and entertaining. I've caught his show a couple of times the last few years, having fond memories of how much I used to enjoy his show. I was sad for him. And embarrassed. For him.
Whatever happened to David Letterman, it's not pretty, and this is a train wreck I plan on turning away from.
I have a little green stripe on the left and right sides, that is it.
I see the green background. Could it be green in support for the protesters in Iran? They're wearing green, the "official" color of Mousavi.
I sure miss Johnny., Everyone could watch him – left and right.
Since the new digital TV change over, and the fact that I don't watch enough television to warrant paying for the crap, 100 fold, AND also the fact that this bubble community is not only a road trip commute from the city, it is laden with trees, Letterman, et al, are pixelated, frozen, and lose signal. Least I forget, we are not allowed by the HOA to have a visible antennae. Dang, if I didn't know better, I might be missing something.
Eric Golub you are in need of serious help.. Get a life idiot. Your sense of grandeur suggest that you are jealous of Letterman.
Here is a signed copy of Sarah Palin in heels only,,, + KY …have a ball..
Jesus Christ, another Letterman story! Keep beating that dead horse — or over-the-hill talk show host — Big Hollywood! Yeesh…

for gods sakes grow up. of course you're going to make fun of her kids. she's an idiot. her whole family are idiots. it was a joke, she's trying to find some rallying cause, this ain't it. no one is going to vote for her as president. can you imagine that 3 am call…. "iran is bombing us president palin"….response…. " they can't be, didn't we invade them 6 years ago?"
Uh, just to make the odd "historical" point regarding the comment:
"I know you are too old to be familiar with Pink Floyd, but Dave, 'Leave those kids alone.'"
Letterman was born in 1947, so would have been 20 in '67 when Pink Floyd was just starting to get hot. It's arguable that their best work was over when The Wall was released in '79, when Letterman was only 32. He's far from "too old" to be familiar with Pink Floyd. He's actually younger than every current or past member of the band.
Yeah, great stuff, Eric, but aren't you (we?) a little too young to be knowing Floyd, at least their 70s heyday years?
Wow. Your rapier-like wit is sooooo devastating.
At any moment your more highly evolved nature is going to transmogrify you into a being of pure light energy; leaving nothing behind but a bad smell and a stain that won't come out of the carpet.,
You protest too much, methinks. L
etterman has issued what for him counts as an apology, and sponsors keep dropping off, although they insist that it's not because of the Palin flap. Must really p-ss you off. Learn to live with it..
I suspect you, Corey, and Anti-GOP are the same dribbling idiot circling the hill like in a B-Western. Take your meds and crawl back under the bridge.
Don't cloud a blog rant with facts, bro! Next you'll be telling him that it's very unlikely Letterman will ever lay eyes on this piece.
Again, what´s your problem?
As I said before, the only problem is that the protest isn´t public enough and loud enough, so nothing will probably come of it.. But if we could make an example of Letterman, it would demonstrate that there may be a price to the personal destruction of conservatives that the media love to practice. And that is worth a few weeks of outraged comments. That is how a movement gains influence. That is certainly how liberals operate: they have successfully raised the cost of even objectively looking at them.
There is no lost opportunity here.
Mr. Letterman stopped being funny when he became 'politically active' on his show. I could laugh at his political jokes about Bsh…most were funny. But at some point, Mr. Letterman became both angry and mean. He also became opinionated and often put down anyone who didn't vote for his guy. That's not a fun show…it's a stump speech.
When will Hollywood learn? Oprah is quickly following. She did SO very much for so many, then Mr. Obama came along and she became a different person. I guess I just don't like watching people fail…or having their political beliefs shoved down my throat…so, I don't watch anymore. As with Mr. Letterman, it ceased to be fun.

Have high-speed internet and watch things online for no charge, if available. Otherwise, nah, you are not missing anything.
Hey, worn-out old horses are tough and the dog is hungry, we will tenderize as much as needed.
And the site is doing that "make 2nd reply to make the 1st appear" thing again. Wonderful.
Did you wipe it off with bleach now that you are done with it? Did you "Move On" to your Nancy Pelosi pic?
Well, keep having fun in Kentucky! Hope you win that eBay auction for the (slightly used) Hillary Clinton doll!
It would be nice to see some visible support somewhere. An ABC News Special Report highlighting the protests, drawing comparisons with Tiananmen Square? No! earth2100 (adapted from a "graphic novel") and a special highlighting that you are too stupid to realize how wonderful National Health Care will be? Yes!
I thought the liberal mantra was "if it makes you happy then there is nothing wrong with it."
You a nielson viewer? Oh..you aren't? Then you think it makes a difference what your views are.
I try to pretend I don't know Floyd at all.
'I notice that you do not make fun of the trials and tribulations of the children of Al Gore and Joe Biden,'
This is it in a nutshell; the hypocrisy of feigning being entertainers (and this goes for Hollywood "stars", too) while they are merely dummies mouthing the political philosophy and politics of personal destruction that always emanates from Leftist ideology. I'm sure every non-Leftist entertainer and comedian out there knows about the problems of Gore and Biden, not to say the treasure trove of "jokes" about the Edwards' situation, but they have the class to leave same alone even though John Edwards used Elizabeth Edwards's cancer to advance his career (with her knowledge and complicity) all the while he was banging the videographer.
Not so with Lefties. They'll attack the family dog if they think it'll hurt their political opposites. I'm sick of it. And I'm especially sick of the propaganda media not calling them on it. In fact, they gleefully pile on, too.
Letterman is a mean old man, that's been clear for a long time. That he's also a dirty old man didn't come out until his obsession with Sarah Palin (and yes, that's what it is — the man can't stop talking about her) made him attack her fourteen year old daughter verbally. And never mind that he thought it was the 18 year old. Bristol Palin is not a politician either.
We saw the same thing with the Bush girls and Chelsea Clinton. Sure the Bush girls partied it up in college, but don't tell me Ms. Clinton didn' t have a good time, too. Fact is, all politicians' kids should be left strictly alone no matter what they do.
Pathetic Perv, Letterman, is fired. See FireLetterman.com I do not accept Dave's sarcastic mocking of an apology.
Obama keeps blaming Bush for every problem that crosses his desk. We'll put down the horsewhip as soon as the POTUS does.
You are spot on! Dave expressing self -righteous indignation over an unwed pregnancy of anyone, smacks of hypocrisy ,venom and just plain stupidity. I too watched David Letterman in the days when he was funny, and not so full of hate toward half of the country who still holds more conservative views than his own.
I am a Nielsen Viewer. My TV was tuned to Conan the last 10 nights.
So, sit your ass down and shut your ass up, Roland. Or I'll have to hit you again.
Thanks for adding to the debate in a thoughtful manner.

You mean like how Bam is responding right now????
You mean like how Bam is responding right now????
Oh I see we have a Monty Python fan – I used to enjoy them when I was young, but I find them horribly dated, and, well, rather juvenile.
I think Dave deserves to be beat on for as long as the left keep bleating about "Bush lied – people died", and the current White House occupant keeps blaming his disastrous, country destroying screw-ups on his predecessor.
Sorry, Bennett: Letterman is still on the air. The nag ain't dead yet.
Dave who…?
I am in total agreement Carson could poke fun at people and not be mean or an a$$ about it.
He reminds me of George Carlin. Who was brilliant for years, but then (some say when his wife died) he became bitter and angry, and it showed in some of his shows.
Well Dave, take a look, that is what has happened to you.
If Sarah Palin was any dumber she would qualify for handicap parking.
And if you were any smarter you wouldn't be 16 years old and still in 4th grade.
Dave's evolved, so have I. A lot of "humor" and "jokes" today are nothing more than crudeness, 4-letter words, and political satire that insults. If you don't like it, leave. I've left. Dave's sinking to that low bar level that seems to prevail today. Johnny Carson was a class act 'til the day of his death. I prefer the class act. Sorry, Dave.
if it is in fact HIS child…just saying
November 5th, 1987. NOVERMBER 5th, 1987!!! Letterman was kind of funny that night, or so it has been reported…
Maybe Dave will pull out a cheesy keyboard and try to jam a few tunes like Chevy Chase did. Epic trainwreck TV.
Spoken like a true supporter of the TelePrompTer-in-chief.
Say goodbye Letterman, you gap-toothed bigot.
Well put. I weary of the constant barrage of hatred and anger from the left. It is a political philosophy that abides no dissent. They are loving, compassionate and generous….. unless you don't agree with them. In that case they will eviscerate you without a thought.
I agree with everything you said about Dave, but personally, enough. Let the old fart expire and fade into obscurity. Good riddance.
[...] And Big Hollywood seems to have had the scales fall from its eyes regarding Letterman by the end of the week — or Eric Golub has, because he’s a long-time fan who is now saying, “Dave, You’re Fired.” [...]
So I don't quite get it? Do you want him fired because of what he said about the Palins (er, more like what he was perceived as saying –albeit, inaccurate)? Or do you want him fired because you just don't like him and his show?
Because he certainly should not be fired over "not saying" what everyone claimed he said. He certainly didn't say anything about a 14 year old being raped, as people accused him of for days. And although Govenor. Pailn initially misunderstood the joke, she has since accepted his appology for the misunderstanding. So that non-issue is dead and burried.
(Cont.)
(Cont.)
So I can only assume you want him fired because you don't think he's funny, you dislike his show and you find his sense of humor to be lacking? Sorry, but I think people don't get fired just because some folks don't like them. The ratings tell the story and does the hiring and firing. 1st, 2nd or 3rd in late night TV, no matter… his audience is large. And people will continue to watch as long as he's on the air. He's an Icon. No, he's not Carson. He's Dave. And not getting the Tonight show was a good. It was a known commodity. Nobody could replace Johnny. That's why after almost 2 decades, you still can't mention Jay without mentioning Johnny. What Jay did with the ratings was great. He kept the store open and thriving even after dear old Dad retired from teh business and passed away. But Dave deserved, and got, his own franchise. Good for him.
NBC is only a click away.

Being of Irish parents I can say there is no obscure Irish holiday. We do things big.
David Letterman is the bright child who was overindulged from an early age and was rewarded for making fun of those different from him. When he gets caught having the proverbial bowel movement on the neighbor's porch he is outraged that his parents don't see the humor in it.
Here's the solution, guys: don't watch him. That's why there is more than one channel on you television.
All this whining about Letterman sounds like left-wingers complaining about Rush Limbaugh.
He's just not funny, nor clever, nor creative. He's a has been.
Dave may be old and cranky, but he's not coked-up and THAT desperate/tapped of ideas; at least not yet…
Where's he going, genius? You know CBS (note the last 2 initials) won't drop him anytime soon…
I thought he did that a decade ago! Who knew?
Hear Hear!
I believe his point was that he was fired from his own viewership. You should have gotten it if you read the whole article. The last paragraph would have tipped you off.
Letterman isn't the first star to put his foot in his mouth and cause a stir. Lots of big names have had to man-up over the years and say they were sorry. Here are some of the most notorious celebrity apologies. http://www.getback.com/gallery/all-apologies/2992...
