Conan O’Brien: Class Act and Worthy ‘Tonight Show’ Successor
by Eric GolubAlthough I rarely find any interest in the entertainment industry, I am very glad to see Conan O’Brien become the head of the “Tonight Show.” His ascension to the throne continues a tradition that Johnny Carson brought forth and Jay Leno continued. The new host of the “Tonight Show” is a nice guy. (Steve Allen was as well, but many would consider he and Jack Paar to be less relevant since they came before Carson. I avoid this debate since, again, I am not in the industry.)
Yes, Johnny Carson preferred that David Letterman get his job (I watch Letterman, although less so lately), but the network saw Leno as the logical heir. Letterman is just too acid-tongued. It makes for some fun comedy, but the “Tonight Show” is about harmless and lighthearted fun. It made sense that Craig Kilborn, who was harder-edged than Conan, followed Letterman. Craig Ferguson, like Letterman, let’s his liberal political ideology affect his monologues.
Conan O’Brien, a former writer for the “Simpsons,” is mild, self-deprecating, and inoffensive. Yet he is still funny. One great thing about Conan is that his show might be the only one (besides Letterman) where the sidekick actually matters. Having Andy Richter come back is fabulous. Richter is one of those people who never had the success outside of the show that his talent merited. Conan and Richter can take the most mundane things and make them funny. I used to love when they would sit and have those old fashioned staring contests. Of course it was great when they would put on black robes, dim the lights, shine flashlights on themselves, and talk about life “In the Year 2000.” Two of those I will always remember, from 1994.
Conan: “In the year 2000, an assassination attempt on the President will be narrowly averted when the shooter misses from close range. The gunman’s name…John Starks.”
Richter: “In the year 2000, baby seals will no longer be killed for their warm, shiny coats. However, they will still be killed…for revenge.”
Even when Conan O’Brien made fun of political figures, it was so over the top that it was seen as harmless. The skit with the lips cut out was hysterically funny. The Bill Clinton character would come out and say “Yee-haw! Nee-haw! Woo doggie!” After Clinton defeated Bob Dole, the Clinton character said that he was “…going to seek punitive action against the states that didn’t vote for me. I’m gonna wup those states. I’m gonna wup their @sses.”
As Conan innocently tried to get the President to settle down, the Clinton character continued. “Forget gays in the military. I’m sending gays to those states. Let’s see how they like being called ‘Oklahomo’ for awhile. Conservative my @ss.” Conan would then interject with mock indignation cries of “Sir, that’s highly inappropriate.”
The Don King character was hysterically funny:
Conan: “Christmas boxing sir?”
Don King Character: “That’s right Conan, I’m calling it the ‘Mayhem in Bethlehem.’ ‘The Holy War in the Holy Land.’ $49.95, only on pay-per-view.”
Conan: “The O.J. Simpson civil verdict?”
Don King Character: “That’s right Conan, I’m calling it the ‘Molesto in Modesto.’ ‘The Fury With No Jury.’ Only on pay-per-view.”
Conan would wrestle with the fake demons in his head. On one side would be the devil. Yet on the other side, instead of an angel, would be a bear. The devil would advocate bad deeds, and the bear would recommend that Conan eat some honey.
The importance of all of this is that comedians that need viciousness to survive are as weak as comedians that need foul language or bigoted jokes to make a living.
Rush Limbaugh has remarked that early in his career, he was being molded into a shock jock. He heard Joe Pyne tell a caller to “gargle with razorblades.” Yet when Rush studied the great comedians of all time, he noticed that they were not mean, and did not insult people. In fact, outside of Don Rickles, where everybody knew it was an act, all of the top comedians were nice.
Comedy has gotten coarser today, as has society in general. This can be seen in the failed attempts at humor over Barack Obama. Too many liberal comedians will not mock him, and too many conservative comedians just echo the viciousness that liberal comedians directed at George W. Bush (although with much less ferocity and drool.).
Conan O’Brien has stayed above the fray. He is silly, and sometimes sophomoric, but he simply refuses to be mean. Even Triumph the Insult Comic Dog just wants somebody to poop on.
Conan is a nice guy, and It is good to see a nice guy finish first. As boxing promoter Don King would say, “Congratulations Conan, my jughead, potato eating friend.” May your successor in 2026 be just as nice and just as funny.

Except for that dicey first season, I always thought Conan was hilarious. Brilliant, quirky and self-deprecating. I loved his mix of late show talk and the completely off the wall bizarreness like the fictitious Clive Clemmons Inappropriate Responses channel.
Great post, dude.
I agree. He's in the Jack Paar, Johnny Carson and Steve Allen tradition. Actually, it's a very American tradition. Nothing forced, phony or political about him. He's patented his own style of self-deprecation and mock vanity that completely defuses the notion of ego. He's quick, silly and yet centered, and loves talking to people. I never cared for Leno, gave up on Letterman years ago, and am glad for this.
Jay Leno kept doing the same stuff over and over again. It was like watching the movie "Groundhog Day" where he wakes up and we all know what to expect. With Conan O'Brien The Tonight Show is alive and well again and just pure fun.
I've posted this here before; if he and his writers make sure that they intentionally divide the political stuff 50/50-Left/Right, and stick to it, I'm sure righties will drop their shields. The ratings will clobber Letterman and make for a show that can be fun.
Hope so!

I just hope his masters at GE and the OND (Obama News Division) of NBC and MSNBC don't read him the riot act, i.e., Democrat’s good, Republican’s bad.
That was Carson's genius, he may or may not have been a liberal, but ALL jackass politicians got it equally in his monologues. A grown man like Carson wouldn’t have any of this embarrassing, conformist hero worship of Obama that we see today.
Carson (and hopefully Conan) realized it's better to have 100% of the people with you, than 50% of the people against you.
Letterman is unwatchable, and Leno, with his paid "Central Casting Groupies" starting off the show, became lame and predictable
After the Alec Baldwin incident where he was screaming about stoning children of some senator to death on the show, I stopped watching. Did Conan tolerate that level of crap? I'm sincerely curious because I just tuned out of so much because of that.
Spot on.
Leno turned me off when he started
by hammering then Veep Quayle for the entire first week.
His best stuff came later like Jaywalking and Headlines,
and he clubbed Letterman in the ratings by balancing his barbs.
Good luck , Conan.
Hopefully he can stay the creative goofball,
and avoid being the bitter old guy Letterman is.
It looks like at the end of his CBS contract, Letterman
will be filmed in his lawn chair yelling at everyone to
get off his lawn.
Thanks for this posting! I love Conan and am so glad he's got the Tonight Show. I actually started watching it again!
The man is goofy, loony and so off the wall funny, you almost never know what to expect. I dearly hope he keeps politics out of the show. It's so nice to have a show to enjoy that doesn't push a political ideology (even if it's my own ideology).
Mr. Golub, I respectfully disagree…a lot.
Can't comment on O'Brien's material of late because I'd sworn him off 6 months ago. Maybe I just picked a bad time to watch but his humor had an agenda. As usual, it was to diminish conservatives, cover for liberals or skew thinking to the left. However, I do think he can be hilarious but I tired of getting kicked in the gut and sought 'funny' elsewhere.
BTW, Black, it was Rep. Henry Hyde.

I have never been a big fan of Conan but have started watching, and enjoying, him. I would have to agree with the author of the article about dirty humor. Years ago they had blue humor but it was live, in clubs or on records. If you enjoyed that type of humor you had to make an effort to see or hear it. Now it is piped into your livingroom. Red Foxx and Rusty Warren were prime examples. Now if you see a live performance most "comedians" seems to think they have to be filthy to be funny. I like a good clean comedian. And a comedian that respects his profession. Conan is a good comedian, at least on TV.
I think Conan O'Brien is a better writer than he is a talk show host. Still, I hope he does well, because if he's doing well, Letterman isn't.
Conan may be a nice guy but he's still a redhead.
At least he's not carrot top.
Andy is back? I just might check out Conan at his new digs. He always made me laugh.
I hope he brings back the guy with bulletproof legs, too.
Ug, Carrot Top. Thanks for ruining my day!
Maybe he can get Prince Harry on and they can compare notes for a few segments.
Guess I'm going to be skewered for this, but I don't much like Conan. There, I said it. Maybe I'm too old, I dunno. His humor has just never appealed to me. I've watched maybe a couple dozen of his shows over the years and the only ones I even sort of liked were the Midwest New Year's Eve "celebrations" he had (even though he was mostly poking fun). Even that's mainly because I'm from the Midwest. We we're always forgotten by networks on New Years Eve with Dick Clark on the East Coast then they'd cut over to whomever the host was in Los Angeles. So Kudos to Conan for that. But, really, nice guy or not, I've never fathomed his popularity. On the other hand I have nearly given up on TV talk shows altogether anyhow. There is not one I watch regularly any more.
Just drifted back after my Obama prayer meeting. The line above really should read…
Carson (and hopefully Conan) realized it's better to have 100% of the people with you (most of the time), than 50% of the people against you (all of the time).
It was a planned bit. The oxygen mask Conan pulled out of nowhere should've been a dead giveaway.
During the Presidential campaign, Conan once made a joke about Bristol Palin. I forget the actual line but in was in the vein of her mother saying she wouldn't make a good hockey goalie because she didn't "protect the crease." I've been a Conan fan from the beginning but thought that joke seemed vile at the time, i think the girl was still 17. So basically it was a joke about a pregnant seventeen year old girl's vagina.
Did she deserve that type of public ridicule because she joined her mother on stage at the convention?
Whoever says "yes" must have a seriously dark heart.
I didn't swear him off or anything but I think it shows he's from from the "aw shucks" nice guy that this post makes him out to be. Watch him long enough and you realize he's just as left leaning as Dave, just not as maniacal about it. He uses his doofy act to cover it but his doofy act wears thin eventually.
Me too. I had no idea they brought back Andy Richter. It's a shame that Richter never had much success outside Conan because he is a very funny guy.
I don't know how many of you caught it, but "Andy Richter Controls the Universe" was a brilliant show (that got canceled after 19 episodes).
Well said. That's all any of us here are asking for: make fun of both sides. We don't need a show that makes fun of liberals 100% of the time. It would just be nice to see both sides made fun of equally because both sides do stupid stuff all the time.
Bill Maher is a great example of this. In his early days on TV, I loved his show because he made fun of everyone. Then, when he moved to HBO, he got a bad case of Bush Derangement Syndrome and it just became 100% Bush/Republicans are dumb jokes.
My favorite thing about Carson was that I have no idea what his politics are.
It's interesting that to prove your point about O'Brien not needing to use foul language to be funny, you posted several examples of him cursing.
I don't find Conan O'Brien "mild and inoffensive" at all, personally. His show was full of dirty jokes and skits, much like the example posted above about Bristol Palin. Some people think that type of joke is funny; fair play to them, but I don't find it funny at all. Good luck to him in succeeding at his job, but he won't have me as a viewer.
Though, I have to say, ANYBODY could be better than Jay Leno. The man is possibly the least funny person alive, except for perhaps his band leader.
I stopped watching Conan when he started Bashing Bush — every single night!
If Conan could joke about Obama I could start watching again.
I agree.
I can tell my husband and my kids with pride….I got to see one of Bob Hope's final shows, before he was too frail to perform.
Where are the Marx Brothers? Where are the Crosby/Hope "Road" movies? Where's the Abbott and Costello "Meet…" movies? (sigh) They do NOT make them like they used to.
Eric states that "Craig Ferguson, like Letterman, let’s (sic) his liberal political ideology affect his monologues."
I've started watching Craig some recently, and frankly, I haven't seen it. Maybe I haven't watched enough to form a representative sample, but Craig to me seems to be playing it more down the middle or avoiding politics altogether. And why do I watch Craig? His monologue SEEMS to be more off the cuff than Letterman or Leno (or Conan for that matter), and although his silliness is often extreme, it seems sincere. Of course, my opinion is subject to change if I hear something like Letterman said, but for now, Ferguson is the best of the bunch.
I wish Conan well, but I think he relies excessively on Robert Smigel's talking picture of George W. Bush. Some more Øbama jokes, please.
When you pry your nose out of Conan's crease, maybe you should consider this from last week –
He announced that Carrie Prejean had been stripped of her Ms. CA crown and the crowd went nuts and Conan grinned and nodded approval.
Get out of your daze – you might find a clue.
I never watched Craig Kilborn on CBS, but loved the Daily Show when he was host. I don't recall it being an overtly political show. His humor mostly concentrated on his preppy, sports background. Many funny reports from wacky people found just about anywhere in America. My favorite was the guy that pulled his own teeth and replaced them with polished quartz pebbles from his driveway.
I see Beth Littleford doing commercials. What a waste. She was hilarious. I knew Liz Winstead was a big lefty, but she was still funny on the show.
I watch Craig Ferguson a lot and when he does political humor it is ALWAYS a lefty statement. He has an obsession about tearing down Rush Limbaugh and making fun of him calling him FAT, STUPID, etc. The other political jokes he does denigrates the Republicans, Conservatives, and even some moderates.
I don't get Conan's humor… The first night of the new show I was hoping for something new from him. But the screaming on the tour buses was just a real turn off. That to me is not comedy.
Craig Ferguson does some very clever monologues, with interesting bits of knowledge thrown in, from the perspective of a foreigner that has now become a proud American.
You want good ratings? Invite Keith Olberman on and hit in the face with a bat.
Oh yes, Obrien is just wonderful. Who else could have brought such fun and laughter as his entrance into TV comedy of the fabulous masterbating bear.
I love Conan. His show *tried* stuff. Alot of Leno's good stuff I recognized as coming from Conan's "skunk works:" He is a lefty, but he isn't in your face with it. So yes, some of his jokes, and even some of his reactions, will show his left side. But you can definitely tell he tries for balance, and in either case, its always a laugh and move on type situation.
He isn't rated PG, and I will have to admit, I *loved* the Bristol Palin joke. I want to point out for people who are offended, that there was no (or little) value judgement in the joke itself. It was just a joke about a fairly popular news story. It brought in the hockey aspect from Palin. Lastly, it also was a joke that worked on multiple levels. And was delivered at 1:00 in the morning. No innocent kids were hurt by it (those ones that were awake).
Ger.
Has anyone here ever watched HBO's The Larry Sanders Show? It was so funny, it made the real talk shows seem pale in comparison.
Actually, one innocent seventeen year old kid was hurt by it. The question was not whether it was funny. The question is, does she deserve to be ridiculed in front of millions of people because she is a pregnant teen and she stood on a convention stage withe her conservative mother? That's the "value judgement" he's making when he tells a joke like that.
"This 17 year old girl's actions are in direct contradiction of her mother's publicly stated values. I now have free license to degrade this pregnant 17 year old in front of a public audience of millions." That's his "value judgement." Do you agree with him?
Conan seems far more clever and interesting than the unwatchable, cowardly, boring, and way, way over the hill Letterman.
The thing about O'Brien is that his monologues are kind of slow, with pauses that seem a little awkward. Leno was better at keeping it moving along.
I like Conan, BUT he absolutely must do away with the BEAR. If you've watched his show, you know the one I mean. The one in a diaper performing certain acts upon himself. Just disgusting.

I probably should not be wasting my time commenting on nothing…Conan is nothing!
He seems to be trying too hard to make things funny that are not…
Leno was OK for awhile…after awhile I watched only his monologues…
Nobody will ever replace Carson, the best of the rest
Here's a great one http://normanhooben.blogspot.com/2009/03/time-out...
The whole targeting of comedy is squarely the audience at hand. Comedians go left when their audience leans that way. Letterman heading off into the left of left or as a comparison the way Arsenio Hall alienated his audience by cramming his racial agenda down their throats is also just a sign of his ego and contempt for what was part of his own audience. I know many who stopped watching him once his political agenda poisoned his comedy. I was on board Letterman on day 1 and have myself since bailed out before the current crash and burn.
Conan is definitely going to be funnier that Leno. But he may not be able to stay so wacky and keep the audience for the tonight show. It will be interesting to see how he changes his act.
I _despise_ Leno's Tonight Show, but his standup is fantastic. Don't write him off until you've seen it.
Light-hearted humor about Obama. How would that go?
"Not to love Obama
Is a great disgrace,
So we Heil — , Heil —,
Right in Obama's face."
Sorry but I have to diagree, Conan was never funny and in fact his humor is rather lame. Add to that the fact that he tries to never be offensive and you have a shadow of what Carson achieved. With his left leaning liberal slant you have simply another clone trying to outdo the other clones.
The "lips" behind those Clinton/Dole/King cutouts (as well as the voice and puppetmaster of "Triumph") was Bob Smigel. After a few years on Conan, he started making (pre-Digital) Shorts for SNL and with one or two exceptions (the overly-existentialist "Dora The Explorer" parody) those were some of the most hateful and vitriolic bits on that program… so maybe it was Conan reining him in during those first few years?
For several years I really enjoyed watching Conan. Often very inventive. I, too was a big fan of the O'Brien/Richter team and the novelty of Max, Springsteen's drummer, leading the band, being so straight-laced looking. It was a good crew. When Andy left it got much less interesting. After a while the shtick got tedious and I started looking elsewhere (or just getting more sleep). I tuned in last week and no Andy. Sort of flat. I'll try again.
Fergusson has been a breath of fresh air. He will fall into a rut, but rarely stays there. I have been doubly impressed by a depth lacking elsewhere that surprises and delights. His citizenship fervor, his sudden seriousness about his alcoholism, followed by self depricating addict humor, the Brittany monologue, his Father's eulogy. Gov. Palin gave him honorary citizenship in Alaska when he tried to become a citizen faster by becoming a citizen of each state. His WHC dinner address. Craig's voting monologue ought to be required viewing. His interviews can get quite odd. I find him more likely to lay into Obama and general political stupidity than any of the others. Though coming from a europolitical history, I think he may be tempered a little by his buddy Drew Carey's libertarianism. Now if only Letterman would retire and pass his slot on to Craig we might have a couple of decent rivals again. For now I am glad I can watch them serially.
Hey , Do you remember what Rock Band front man grabbed Conan by his knee's and almost dropped Conan on his head. It happened a few years back and I can't remember who it was. I have tied finding it on YouTube but can't. Thanks Techster
Techster, their is no way I could go through all his guests, but I found a list that might help you:
