Dear Dave
by Eric GolubDear David Letterman,
I am writing this to you as a man who has been a fan of yours for 25 years, who does not go to sleepĀ until I see the Top 10 List. I cracked up when you came to Los Angeles, and threw tacos at people on the 405 Freeway. I loved it when you sent two guys dressed as bunny rabbits into an H and R Block on April 14th one year, only to see them get screamed at by stressed out accountants. Only you would be crazy enough to have a guy dress as a bear, stop traffic, and ask a New York City cab driver to dance the waltz.
Dave, for a long time you were the best. You joked about “mailing it in,” but I never thought you did. When ABC and CBS were in a tug of war, you told Paul Schaffer, “Can you believe two networks are fighting over this cr@p?”
Yet something has happened to you Dave. You are getting snarkier, and not in a fun way. You are becoming a grumpy old man. Ironically enough, you have made a career out of painting Republican presidential candidates this way. Yes, it was hilarious when you said, “Some people see the glass as half empty or half full. Bob Dole sees the glass as a great place to put his teeth.” Yet politically speaking, you are letting your ideology get in the way of your show.
I am a conservative Republican and die hard George W. Bush supporter, but I genuinely laughed when you got irritated upon finding out that Governor and Presidential candidate Bush went on Leno. You turned to Paul and said, “Dubya’s on Leno? Well there’s a real meeting of the minds.” Since this was right after your heart surgery, it was even better when Paul said, “You just don’t give a d@mn anymore, do you?”
Dave, I truly think you have finally begun to mail it in, especially on political topics. I don’t mind conservatives being teased. Yet your political humor has developed two flaws, and they are both tragic.
First of all, your bias is showing. You can barely hold what appears to be your contempt for Republicans.
You were tough on Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Yet you have not laid a pinky finger on Barack Obama. In fact, you are still making George W. Bush jokes.
I will be the first person to admit that Barack Obama does not have anything as painfully easy as Bill Clinton’s lechery or John McCain’s age. So what? You have a writing staff that should at least make an effort.
I took 15 minutes by myself to come up with an entire routine poking fun at President Obama. None of it was mean. Yet it was funny.
Dave, you could make fun of his effeminate side. You could make fun of his occasional pompousness. For crying out loud, make fun of his ears. The Presidential plane is now known as Ear Force One.
If you think making fun of his ears is a “cheap shot,” that would make no sense given the John McCain dementia jokes, and the ever creative “humor” emanating from Rush Limbaugh being portly.
If you are going to make a fat joke, be creative. Target a liberal for once. For instance, George Clooney has an ego so big, that people have confused him with his mother Rosemary Clooney.
Secondly, humor against private citizens is cruel. Don Imus got in trouble over the Rutger’s basketball team remarks because they were private citizens. Your remarks against Bristol Palin simply go beyond the bounds of decency. If you disagree with me, then perhaps you might wish to make jokes about scandals involving the children of Al Gore, and very recently, Joe Biden. Why were the Bush twins fair game, when Chelsea Clinton was left alone? You would be distraught if somebody mocked your lovely son Harry. Doesn’t Sarah Palin deserve the same humanity regarding her lovely family?
Dave, I will say it again. For a quarter of a century I loved your show. Yet lately, I feel that you are more interested in humiliating conservatives than in being an honest biting critic of politicos everywhere.
I want to see you as the guy who, with help from Mayor Rudy Giuliani, pelted subway tokens at the audience.
Yet I am sadly beginning to conclude that if you have so little regard for a large part of this country, maybe they should cease watching. After all, the true liberals are already watching Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. The conservatives might not be your base, but some of us like your hard hitting nature.
I just want you to be fair. Please start mocking Barack Obama. Enough with the George W. Bush jokes, the Sarah Palin jokes, and the Rush Limbaugh obesity jokes.
If 2010 becomes 1994, and the Republicans win Congress, go after the new Speaker with as much toughness as you did Newt Gingrich, if they are controversial. Just make sure to remember that if you are not making fun of Barack Obama, then you are not doing your job as a comedian.
That would be a shame, because you were one of the best.
Sincerely,
eric aka the Tygrrrr Express

I second that! I used to love Letterman. Now he's just a bitter old man. I guess because left will laugh at anything you say about someone on the right, he thinks he's still funny.
By way of a correction on an otherwise fine story, Rosemary Clooney is not George's mother but aunt, and further she's dead since 2002.
THE LETTERMAN SHOW has gone from funny to dull to one step below THE VIEW.

Cheeze, if your gonna criticize the guy then criticize. The fawning butt-kissing isn't going to make the Indiana weatherman any more receptive your observations. A simple "Dear Dave, long time viewer, first time critic…" would've gotten the message across.
The only thing that will get Left-terman's attention will be the loss of ratings. The last time that I was in LA I tried to do the turista thing and go to these filmings. Naturally, even though I held a ticket, I was refused entrance (probably because I was in uniform). Like most bullies of his stripe, the best way to handle em is with boxing gloves and a boot. Don't feed the troll.
I miss Monkey Cam.
The first guy on any network to stop playing brownshirt to this administration is going to find a large audience very quickly. I don't think that can be staved off by the establishment gatekeepers forever.
Why does anyone bother with this guy anymore? He stopped being funny years ago, and it is as if he thinks you're idiots for thinking he's funny in the first place. America's given him a dream career and yet on show after show he reveals himself to be a small, angry, embittered old guy. ( hate to throw in the 'old,' crack, but when you act like a cranky old curmudgeon you kind of earn it.)
His snide treatment of McCain and other Republicans is simply tedious. The only thing more tedious are the McCain's and other Republicans who go on with him and suck up to him and then act surprised when he doesn't give them a square deal.
I never watched him much but when I have flipped through it seems like it's mostly him playing with his pen or mugging in order to get a Pavlovian laugh out of the audience. I mostly just felt soiled
And then there are those ears. A strong wind and the POTUS is airborne without AF1.
Good one.
When Letterman had that heart trouble a few years ago, doctors must have taken his heart out of him and not put anything back in his chest cavity. He is going through the motions and is a truly sad, sad person to observe. I feel sorry and pity him for the misplaced anger he displays and his miserable outlook on life. He should step aside and try to get his life in order.
Didn't we just do this?
Dave who?
Letterman's still alive? And on TV? I'd rather watch reruns on TV Land than the crap they try to pass off as humor these days, cutting edge my a$$.
I'm about as liberal as they come, and I think Letterman has sucked for many years.
There is an interview of Letterman that I saw ten or fifteen years ago, he spoke of his long time admiration for Andy Rooney. He told the interviewer that when he finally got to meet Rooney he was incredibly disappointed because Roony, this idol of his, turned out to be just a mean, rude, angry old man. It's tragic that Letterman is now become that same man.
Your wasting your time thinking letterman is anything but another michael moore
I used to watch Letterman – I think Pius humor is more cerebral – not "smarter" but more introspective – and frequently self-deprecating. But years of George Bush jokes alienated me. Particularly when you see equally absurd statements from Obama – like the 57 states – and props – like the teleprompter – and you hear – nothing – from Dave. That's where the bias is coming through.
If Conan starts beating Letterman next month when he takes over The Tonight Show, you might see a change in Dave's show, either out of his own efforts or forced on him by CBS — it's one thing to lose out to Leno, since he and Dave started facing each other at 11:35 Eastern at roughly the same time in 1993. It's quite another if O'Brien moves from 12:35 to 11:35 and starts beating The Late Show (though this could, of course, just make Letterman even grumpier and more partisan, to the point that his monologue becomes totally indistinguishable from a Keith Olbermann Special Comment).
I'm glad to see I am not the only one who thinks Letterman is about as funny as Maxine Waters. For years now, I have viewed this windbag to be as cranky and bitter as Al Franken. Both are about as interesting, and comedic as seeing flies mate, watching paint dry, or looking at a stray dog crap on my lawn.
I think you're being selective in your examples. For a while, when David mentioned Bill "Bubba" Clinton's name, it was followed by a spinning image of MacDonald's fries. Then came (in David's parlance) "that heavy-set girl," and jokes are still made about that, not only on the Late Show, but on all comedy talk shows. Similarly, everyone made fun of George Bush (gaffes, pretzel,) and Dick Cheney (torture, sneering, contempt.) If David is showing a bias against George Bush, that's first because he's a human with an opinion (not a judge or a news anchorman,) but also because he knows it'll sit all right with most of the country. John McCain did a fair bit of distancing himself from George Bush during the election. David has certainly poked fun at all sides – Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, and (please – certainly you've noticed) Al Gore – and will make jokes about Barack Obama once he slips up a few times. It'll come – wait for it. I must also mention the comments from "oldsoldier1": If you were in LA, then you weren't turned away from the Letterman show. Also, David has shown tons of respect for the men and women of our military at every opportunity.
Obama pretty much handed Dave some great material with the whole teleprompter thing. Talk show hosts could've milked it for weeks. " Obama met the queen this week. Everything went fine until he tried to roll his teleprompter into the throne room." Instead, Dave took the opportunity to defend Obama for being chained to a teleprompter. That's when I knew for certain that the old Dave was gone, to be replaced by a crusty old left-wing lapdog.
Good piece, but I think your wasting your time, he and all of those like him are lost causes. Now concerning Obama himself, It's almost as though the decision has been made by those who decided to cram him down our throats … whoever they are that this veil of Obama perfection, intelligence, The One … "ad infinitum" is so flimsy that it won't stand up to any scrutiny so there is none. The word is leave him alone at all cost, and attack any that question him.
Didn't Dave have a kid out of wedlock with his then girlfriend? Didn't they just get married? How old is his kid now?
No, she's not his mother, but I thought I was just missing the joke. Am I?
I agree with this. My husband was, as a teenager, a die-hard Letterman fan. Up until about a year ago, I would be subjected to the Late Show, usually sitting silent with upraised eyebrows. He finally got tired of the one-sided vitriol and now I don't have to watch anymore, hurray!
His son is 5 already. Wonder if someone at school called him a bastard, thus the marriage?
I stopped watching Dave more than 8 years ago when his "comedy" became mean and uneven. No thanks, I am not interested in watching a bitter old man.
I quit watching Dave ten years ago. Haven't missed him a bit.
Thanks for raising the bar with blogs like this. Letterman has become nothing more than a sleepwalking party line chia pet. Pour some koolaid on it and watch it grow.
Letterman tapes in NYC; Leno tapes in L.A.
Yes, I'm sure you were refused admission the "filming" of the Letterman show in Los Angeles because you were in uniform and Dave hates the troops.
Either that, or because Letterman tapes in New York City. Nice try, though.
Except the "teleprompter" thing is nothing but an obsession of the hard right. Everyone else knows that presidents use teleprompters — and they don't care. The public perception of Obama is for the most part (say, 70% of the populace) is that he is smart and articulate. I realize you disagree, but comedians know that for their jokes to work, they have to resonate with what their audience already understands. So if Letterman started making jokes about the teleprompters, the dittoheads might laugh but everyone else would simply be confused.
I say put Craig Ferguson in Lettermen's timeslot. Now that's a winner!
Exactly. When I watched Sarah Palin's speech at the convention, and heard the crowd going nuts, I was worried (I'm a Democrat). But then I was thinking about it the next day, and I realized something: too many of the big applause lines were tailored to the audience in the hall, and not the broader tv audience. Most people had no idea what that "Greek columns" line was supposed to mean, and if they did they wouldn't care.
George W. Bush used a teleprompter for his speeches. So did John McCain and Sarah Palin. So did Bill Clinton. So did Ronald Reagan.
Wanna know a real scandal? Some politicians used to read their speeches OFF PAPER!!!! LOLZ
Mark Levin covers this pretty well in his book "Liberty and Tyranny" (well to be fair, he quotes someone else and then expounds on the issue, but it's still a great book). Celebrities all have emotional issues. I expect Dave is bitter b/c he's old and mostly irrelevant – he leaves no great legacy like Johnny Carson, he is less popular than Leno. Being rich and famous just isn't good enough for some people.
Ditto on being a LONG time watcher that switched to Leno (or no TV). It was getting to the point that
Letterman's anger was dispressing me.
Hey Dave! Did you think your medications are affecting your attitude?
Come on,….. The guy used a teleprompter at a press conference. Get him without it, and it is obvious it is not there. The um, um, er quotient rises by two orders of magnitude and the answers/comments are at best unclear and at worse, nonsense.
You’re looking for reasoned even handed treatment for conservatives from a devout liberal, not likely my friend.
Letterman was funny? When?
Seinfeld was built for late night but…he might be past his prime for it now.
He used the prompter for his written opening statements — just like any other modern president. Okay, Bush sometimes used written notecards — do you hate this president because he reads off a screen instead of paper? That's got to be a winning electoral strategy. As for the ums and ers, Obama is very careful about the words he chooses. Clearly he does not want to misspeak. So he thinks before he speaks. I don't understand how that is a problem for anyone, but even if it is it makes it obvious that he isn't using a teleprompter, thus undercutting your entire argument against him.
I don't watch Letterman as a general rule, but the other night I caught him interviewing O'Reilly. Now there's a picture – two wind-bags on the same screen. I was absolutely astounded, though, when Letterman said to O'Reilly, referring to O'Reilly and people like he and Limbaugh, "oh, come on, you're too smart to believe the crap you're spewing" (or words to that effect). Wow, this guy has lost it. He's not even trying to hide his vicious liberal side anymore.
It sure feels like it. Here's hoping this doesn't become as redundant as the rap discussion.
Eric
Nice to see you posting here at BH
Great column!
Yo !
Too late- I've already stopped watching his show. He is a mean, angry, classless man who uses his show to spew his hatred for all things Republican and Conservative. Leno isn't much better- he is still doing bits about GWB and is too scared to mock Obama. They're pathetic.
You've got to be kidding. Obama has provided lots of material for jokes (57 states, typical white woman, guns & religion, bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia, this is OUR moment, his budget, the administration choices, the teleprompter, his ears, are you punch drunk?, choosing his old basketball buddy for the Dept. of Ed., where's the dog?, his mother-in-law lives with them- I could go on and on) yet we are still hearing about GWB. Letterman is an angry old man who is no fun to watch anymore.
Or he made a typo. Get a life troll.
This is what happened to me regarding Bill Maher. I loved him in college and when he was on Politically Incorrect. But, after watching him devolve into nothing but a Bush-basher for 6 years, I had to ask "where's the funny?" I was hoping that when the Dems took control of Congress in 2007 he would be able to balance out his humor. Alas, he was too far gone.
Eric, you make some very good points about Letterman, but your tone sounds like some 13 year old girl addressing the boyfriend who drifted away … 'We were so close. I LIKED you … a LOT. I feel so hurt.'
Newsflash: Letterman doesn't give a damn about your feelings; never has.
He has always exuded an attitude of conceited contempt toward the public, his potential audience.
Time spent watching his show could be spent far more profitably on a number of other options.
Like the song says, 'Grow Some Funk of Your Own'.
The reason Dave's cranky is the same reason a lot of libs are cranky just a couple of months into the era of Hope & Change: They're getting neither. Well, to be more accurate, they're not getting the change they thought they would get. Buyer's remorse and a pounding post-coronation hangover must be tough.
David Letterman is a fool.
Fine troll. I made an error for one lib to a different lib. My point stands. And you may return to your bridge. DISMISSED!
What rap discussion? I don't recall a rap discussion. But now that you mention it, that might be a good topic for an article…
Oh, yes, such a typo. What he meant to type was "Letterman's a liberal, so I can make up any lie about him I want — including that he hates soldiers and wipes himself with the flag, Because as long as you hate liberals, anything you say is true!"
I'm the troll? You're the one making up stories to trash people.
Dave Letterman sucks okay!!! I mean look at him! He looks like a silly doofus with that stupid Cheshire cat grin.
You don't realize you're a troll? How pathetic!
waaaaaaaaaahhhhh waaaaaaaaaahhhhhh
Excellent. . . feel the power of the force flow through you. . . join the dark side!
Haven't watched Letterman for years, but recently e-mailed NBC about Leno's lame "What President Bush is doing today" nightly segments. If W has the grace to say Obama deserves his silence, maybe Leno and the late night crowd can show some grace and let it go – he's out of office now, but old habits die hard I guess.
Waaa, waaa, waaa! So you love stupid silly comedy, but if Letterman dares to suggest something of significance than you are no longer a fan! BFD ! Do you think Dave or the millions of us who voted the Republicans out on their asses, could possibly care less?
Another person I can't even watch. Makes me queasy.
Dave Letterman thinks his mind is like a steel trap — yeah, rusted shut.
Dave Letterman is so narrow minded his brain could fit in the gap between his teeth.
I always preferred Letterman over Leno and had a real fondness for Dave since he started Late Night. But I turned him off for good 6 months ago. Couldn't take his nasty bitter hatred for all things Republican anymore. This article perfectly describes the problems I encountered before permanently (and sadly) cutting my tie to Letterman. He needs to go retire to Montana and count his money now.
How many viewers has Letterman lost because of his political self-absorption? His liberal shrillness which he passes of as humor got tiresome years ago.
I thought Dave was "phoning it in for years," but the capper was his nightly harrange of GWB with his "great moments in presidential speeches" segment. A few shots of his gaffes would've been funny, and we all know W made mistakes during speeches, but guess what? So has Obama, yet Letterman won't touch him. Letterman's show "jumped the shark" back in the mid-90s and he's become just another bitter old liberal since then. His show is as irrelevent as his humor.
Letterman is a typical democrat. He is brainwashed and close-minded. He will never make fun of Obama because he and many of his fans idolize him. Letterman will only joke about people (like us) who want him to make fun of the president. In the end, Republicans will be the butt of any attempt at an "Obama" joke by Letterman. Everyone I know that liked his show stopped watching Dave a long time ago.
Yes, on this thread, you are the troll, chum.
In one of Obama's teleprompter mistakes he thanked himself. Come on, tell me that's not comedy gold. Oh, and the public perception of O being so smart and articulate? That perception is shaped by people like . . . wait for it . . . Letterman.
Kid is five. Letterman is worthless and I gave up on him at least a decade ago. He never was the same after his heart attack. . . must think hollywood is heaven and he has to suck up to the weird morons there.
Letterman?? Sorry I have to get up early to support 3 welfare families.
Letterman doesn't care. He hasn't cared for a long time. He's got more money than he will ever need, and if you watch him he gets more money. Don't be his useful idiot. Find something else to do at 11:30.
After all, he's the laziest entertainer in the history of TV and proud of it. That's been his shtick for years. And I really think that as Paul said, David couldn't care less anymore. He's convinced that he can say nearly anything, the studio audience will laugh and the paychecks will continue until he decides to pack it in. Harry's trust fund, every night at 11:30.

I have never liked Letterman. I've thought him fatuous and glib for decades, but that's just me. Thanks for pointing it out.
Letterman's been spending too much time with New York liberals, absorbing their trash, becoming more rude and arrogant than ever. He's taken on the attitude that whatever comes to his mind is absolute truth just because he thought it, and is worthy of being spewed onto his audience. Kind of reminds me of a New York Times Op-Ed writer.
Regardless of political, ideological, or religious color, Letterman's comedy has always revolved around one specific characteristic: he does not suffer fools. The Republican party is, indeed, a QE2-sized ship of fools. I'm not some anonymous left-winger, I am a former Republican. The reality: why should DL waste his time and comedic capital making lame jokes about O's ears et al, when the Republican party, and their most vocal loony tunes, offer way more hilarity? The hilarity, my friend, is found in their absurdity.
Was a loyal viewer until I finally got sick of all Dave's nastiness and Bush-bashing….no longer found left political bias at all funny.
Now for pre-sleep humor..I go to E's Chelsea Lately!
Would be interested to learn how much Letterman's ratings have declined and consequently how that has added to Handler's increased popularity and renewed contract with E!
I quit watching DL years ago, when his total bias became obvious… I will never watch him again. It always amazes me when these blowhards don't release that they are pissing off 50% of their clientele. It goes to show that anymore, they don't care about it. So I am putting my money where my mouth is, and will not watch him, most news organizations and dozens of actors/actresses…
Nah.

You're not, uh, throwing self-righteous stones, are you? I'm sure not, because that would be blatantly hypocritical with Palin and all.

There are two probems with the author's complaint: 1 – Obama's been president for all of a couple of months, so there's not much to say about him yet. 2 – Obama is not a laughable moron. Stephen Colbert once famously pointed out that reality has a well-known liberal bias. Well, comedy is about the irony in reality, and few things are more ironic than the blatant disregard of reality – the counter-reality – that is conservatism. It's funny. Conservatives are funny. They don't mean to be. It's not like we're laughing with them, or that they're particularly witty. …
…They just unwittingly do very funny things. Granted, it often takes a dark sense of humor to laugh at what conservatives do, but Letterman is s dark humorist, so naturally he has a lot to say about them. Letterman can't make Obama funny. Either Obama does something funny, or he doesn't. If he does, you can be sure that Letterman, Leno, Stewart, Colbert, will all jump on the joke. But if he doesn't, don't expect them to go out of their way to make fun of something that isn't funny. I really haven't heard all that much funny stuff about Obama – from anyone. That would probably be because he doesn't do a lot of funny things.
So, lay off Letterman about this. It's pointless. You're looking for a snake in a meadow with no mice.
JMJ
You are entitled to your opinion. I maintain that he is an insufferable bore. And a rude one, at that. He is also a partisan critic of politicians- which disqualifies him from being a comic to becoming a critic- which is his right- it's his show. And I have to right to ignore the crotchety old man if I so choose- which I do.
So many here are showing the same thin skin liberals show when liberals are made fun of.
There is no agenda for Letterman, Letterman only says what gets a reaction from his audience, whatever is popular at the time. You didn't have a problem with him doing Clinton intern jokes every show for a decade, which he still does.
Obama's time for widespread ridicule will come. You're just in on the ground floor. Patience, Obama is still the new guy. Letterman took it real easy on Bush (both of them) in the beginning.
