Will the Last Terrorist to Leave Gitmo Please Turn Out the Lights?
by Endre BaloghLast week, Congress soundly rejected (at least for now) President Obama’s ill-conceived idea to precipitously close the terrorist detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Although there is not a shred of real evidence to indicate that the facility at Gitmo is anything other than the best run and most high-tech facility available to house the vicious monsters incarcerated there, a lot of liberal Democrats feel that it should be closed – just because. It’s amusing to read left-wing blog articles like this one at the Huffington Post, that report with all seriousness that Democrats are mystified about how it’s possible that a Democrat controlled Congress and Presidency can’t mange to gather enough votes to fund the closure of Gitmo. Well, maybe it’s because closing Gitmo is just a really bad idea!
Anyone who has read Lieutenant Colonel Gordon Cucullu’s fascinating and meticulously documented book “Inside Gitmo: The True Story Behind The Myths Of Guantanamo Bay” easily understands the merits of keeping Gitmo open. In fact, Lieutenant Colonel Cucullu makes a compelling case for expanding Gitmo so as to house convicted terrorists like Jose Padilla and Zacharias Moussaoui, (currently in maximum security prisons here in the US) since they are privy to a vast trove of vital intelligence information, presently unavailable because convicts in American prisons cannot be interrogated.
Be that as it may, the lopsided Senate vote against President Obama’s request for $80 million to fund his wish-upon-a-star fantasy that the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay simply vanish, gives me hope that in the end cooler heads than those at MoveOn.org will prevail in this debate.
Of course, the problem now arises of where future funding will come from to keep Gitmo in operation while Democrats spin their wheels debating what to do with it. If they refuse to allocate the necessary funds to keep it up and running, it seems they will have painted themselves into a rather embarrassing corner: no money to fund its operation, no money to close it down, and no place to put the terrorists.
Certainly, in these troubled economic times, intelligent people should all agree that fiscal responsibility mandates some sort of well-thought-out financial husbandry. In light of that, there seems to be only one alternative left to the Democrats hell-bent on closing Gitmo. Once all the money runs out, the obvious thing will be to simply shut it down. Lock all the gates, turn out the lights, pack up, and leave. No muss. No fuss. Let the terrorists fend for themselves and in a few days or weeks, nature will take its course and solve the problem of what to do with them. Awhile later, Nancy Pelosi can declare Gitmo a National Treasure (like Alcatraz) and, now that travel restrictions to Cuba are being relaxed, MoveOn.org can begin organizing “Bash Bush” tourist excursions. In the end, it will result in millions of dollars saved and possibly even a net financial gain.
I think this approach to Gitmo is what Vice President Biden must have been referring to in his commencement address at Wake Forest last week when he so astutely stated, “There’s not a single issue on this President’s plate that will not yield a change. Just merely by ignoring it, it will change.” Ignoring the detention center at Guantanamo Bay may be the only option left. It is heartening that a coherent policy is finally beginning to emerge from this Administration

Common sense=Kryptonite to Democraps.
We can only hope they keep Club Gitmo open and running.
Well, look at it this way, only 3 years and 7 more months to go. Let's just hope and pray (while clutching our bibles and guns) that the U.S. doesn't collapse by then.
the announcement by The One that He was going to close Gitmo in a year will rank among one of the most idiotic decisions ever by a newly elected Commander in Chief. A pure political ploy, made without regard as to the consequences, has painted him into a very unflattering corner. His own Senate rejected him 90-6…
So, what to do?
They'll get back to us on that…
Perhaps figuring out what to do with Gitmo is something only an empathetic Latina can decide. We sure don't want any awful white men calling the shots.
Close Gitmo & putting "them" in US prisons is tantamount to poking your head in the sand.
"There! Problem solved. Let's all pat ourselves on the back and enjoy a coffee at Starbucks. "
"Oh, crap… a bomb just went off outside the Starbucks in NY…. wait… how did that happen? We fixed the problem! Remember?? Back when we poked our heads in the sand? What the hell!?!?! "
Anybody scared yet?
He's already goofed on several things that the lefties and the media would've crapped on GW for, but they've left him alone. Hell, they would've crapped on Clinton too, but it was okay to bash him because then it's not "racist." As it is, besides them being in heaven because they control Congress and one of their own is the boss, they won't say anything. Add to the fact that he happens to be part Black and that makes them all afraid to criticize him. I have a feeling that's going to last quite a while.
I think we should close Gitmo. And before you ask me, "what do we do with the guests?". . . I have an answer to that to. Let's put them up at the White House.
Actually, there's an article out there (on Redstate) about a Montana city with a brand new jail that "volunteered" to take in the prisoners.. but the senators and reps are screaming "NO!"… proving once again the "NIMBY".theory..
Not a shred of real evidence? What about all the classified documents and memos that were recently released that indicated almost no useful information came out of the "interrogations" there? Not to mention the fact (yes, fact) that most of the prisoners at the facility were fairly low-level guys who really had no information to offer in the first place? It's the equivalent of you getting caught by foreigners, imprisoned, and "interrogated" for high level military information you know nothing about. Oh and they do allow interrogations in US prisons. It's torture that's not allowed. Or are they one and the same to you?
[...] Will the Last Terrorist to Leave Gitmo Please Turn Out the Lights? by Endre Balogh [...]
As soon as "The One" releases every other "classified" document that indicates the terror plots that were thwarted and have kept us safe for the past 7 and a half years, we'll "know" what information helped or didn't help. Half the story tells us nothing but assumptions and finger-pointing from "The One," who claims that there will be no more finger-pointing (but that only applies to conservatives apparently).
'almost no useful information'… 'almost'. Hmmmm. Khaleed Sheikh Mohammed gave up the LA tower plot after he was waterboarded and thousands of lives were saved. Obama's people carefully redacted that little tidbit. There is a difference between war and law enforcement; you obviously know nothing of either…
they can be the guests of Gasbag Joe at the Naval Observatory. He can entertain them with wild stories.
Talk about torture…
But…but…but….water was POURED on them! WATER! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! WATER! ON 3 OF THEM! If pouring water on 3 "so-called" terrorists saves thousands of American lives, it's just not worth it!
That's not fair! Nancy should get a few for her house, too! I hear that John Murtha and Jay Rockefellar actually put in a special request for a few. Think of the things Barney could do with..er..for them!
Seriously, if we have to keep them somewhere, I just don't understand why we can't just keep them where they are?? I've heard ideas from several Congresspersons about building special prisons in several state to house these guys. (Pennsylvania and West Virginia) Great plan – lets spend $80 billion to build what we already have…that's Our Federal Government At Work!
The LA tower plot was stopped in February 2002.
Sheikh Mohammed wasn't captured until March 2003.
Trying to prove to someone that they "obviously know nothing " by proving you obviously know even less. Big surprise.
Bev & dcase, there are plenty to go around. We can put it in the bill, "everyone who votes to close Gitmo must take one 'guest' home."
Bev, it makes no sense at all, other than to allow the democrats to claim that they "closed Gitmo," without really changing anything at all.
I'd support closing Gitmo, only if they'd send 'em to Devil's Island – bread, water and lots of rock chopping- now thats an effective management tool.
Remember during the campaign when genius Biden suggested that they will be tested? I remain dizzy about N. Korea. Now kim is blowing up nukes and sending rockets to the sky, and still nothing, but a UN resolution and a strongly worded letter about resuming the six party talks? I'd send that crackpot more than a letter, but I do believe that this is the test. And the outcome may not be so pretty.
I realize that this is not a popular thing to say, but they are "prisoners of war". WE ARE AT WAR. Even though they do not wear brass buttons and epaulettes, they are still soldiers from a battlefield. We need to understand that and get on with it.
As for the memos, half a story is not the full story. Don't you find it interesting that when Pelosi realized that she might be implicated as complicit, the matter has disappeared – especially from the MSM? Suddenly, Our Dear Leader decided it was not prudent to release any further memos or photographs and filed them classified under "executive privilege"? Oh, the transparency is clouding over. Just when Cheney was calling for a full release of these same memos. Doesn't it make you go "hmmmm"?
The GITMO problem was created by Democrats. If the Democrats had not been constantly bad mouthing GITMO to begin with there would never have been any outrage, Inernational or otherwise, to begin with. If the Democrats had been more concerned about National Security than using any made up issue for political advantage there would never have been a cry to close GITMO. It is a problem of thier own making. Now GITMO has become so tainted that it does not matter that GITMO is actually a better run Prison Facility that offers detainees more in the way of comforts and human dignity than can be found in any detention facility or prison in the world. Reality does not matter only perception. Well, the Democrats created this perception that is contrary to reality along with a whole host of others. They are the ones responsible and they did it for entirely selfish reasons. I hope they find it difficult to sleep at night. Even most of our financial mess was caused by this designed perception vs reality.
Bad loans forced on banks, denying any problems with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for years, releasing letters and documents that were correctly labled confidential causing runs on Banks etc… They have caused this entire mess and for what, a temporary political advantage. Now they are using this temporary advantage to permantly damage this country and again the motivation is political. They are all TRAITORS and shouls be tried for TREASON.
"Transparency"? That's a campaign promise that any comedian could use hundreds of times in the past 100+ days, but they haven't. We will all go to sleep one night and the next day wake up to find out that POTUS has signed an executive order to move the detainee's to prisons across the US.
He doesn't feel that he reports to anyone. HE said what HE needed to get HIMSELF elected, now that HE is POTUS, the American people are subjected to living under the RULE of HIM.
Yeah right that he didn't listen to preachers, terrorists, and Marxists. He plays every day from their playbook.
What we need is a max. security prison midway between Fairbanks, AK and Nome, AK.
With temps at 40 below in the winter, they won't be doing much plotting. With mosquitoes the size of B-17s swarming in summer they're not likely to contemplate escape. And with that climate, there won't be a lot of ACLU lawyers hanging around or protesters outside the gates.
"Lieutenant Colonel Cucullu makes a compelling case for expanding Gitmo so as to house convicted terrorists"
As a Pentagon mouthpiece, yes, very compelling:
"["I did a Fox & Friends hit at 0620 this morning. Good emphasis on 1) no torture, 2) detainees abuse guards, and 3) continuing source of vital intel"]. "
Well, he does have that nice underground bunker THAT WE ALL KNOW ABOUT NOW!!! Hey why should his guests get any better treatment than we do. I feel tortured every time that I think he is one heartbeat away from being "President Joe". {{{{shutters}}}}}
what is your point, other than trying to trip people up on details? Mohammed gave up much sensitive information after the 'session' icluding attacks on the Sears tower, Empire State Bldg. and the NYSE.
You were not there yet you maintain a certainty that fits your own political viewpoint. We stand by the statement that you know not of the difference between war and law enforcement…
Check out these related Onion-style parodies, which include links to extended excerpts from the excellent book "Inside GITMO":

Mr. Price, sorry but all three of you are wrong. Load up the scumbags on a C-141 and fly them home via the Pacific Ocean. Of course, it will be a shame the airframe depressurized why the rear loading ramp accidently released thereby discharging said scumbags at 30,000 feet over said ocean. Of course, condolences will be delivered by TOTUS on his next visit to the sandbox.
Ummmmm, ma'am (psst) they are not POWs. They are partisans.
Just saying.
Is that a fact? Tell ya what, we just teminate them in the field and not worry about your stinking feelings.
I still find it funny they call Biden a "forign policy expert" when he hasn't been right about on foriegn policy issue in 30 years!
ask any liberal whos against waterboarding, "how many dead americans are acceptable"? They can NEVER answer.
Takes a lot of resolve to lean back, play golf and let the UN handle it.
(yes, Obama played golf while NK launched those nukes.)
Didn't the MSM critizise President Bush for playing golf while troops were in harms way? Didn't they also rake him over the coals when he said he would give up golf during the war? Where is the same treatment for THE ONE?
I've heard stories on how a female medical tech was maimed by one of these innocent harmless terrorist. Imagine what they would do to some of these weekend warrior type prison gaurds? I'll lay odds that within the first month of these losers inn American Federal Prisons, 5 gaurds will lose their life too former gitmo detainees.
My best friend lives in Boulder CO. I don't want these peices of crap anywhere near her or her family! These men will be a magnet for trouble.
If THE ONE thinks Gitmo is a recruitment tool now? Just imagine the darlings who won't be in a supermax. They'll be free to induct new members in prison. Where do you think those New York guys were inducted at? The Acorn office? NOPE! Prison.
GOOD GOING OBAMA!
I like the way you think!
So, we are at war and keeping prisoners in that war caught in the field…OH, I get it – we are at war with actual people, we're having a war with words!
According to the Geneva Convention Treaty, the thugs at Gitmo are not POWs they are enemy combatants. It may be hard for you to understand the difference but, for someone on the battlefield it is not hard to understand the difference and the consequences of not having the separate distinctions.
Well…looks like we have found a place to send those poor innocent terrorists. Hope you have a large guest room!
I suppose Gitmo could be closed were the inhabitants thereof executed for their war crimes.
I love Gitmo. Wish we had our own for libs.
I don't see why we should deny these people their rights. If they want to strap bombs to themselves and walk into places where there are people, isn't that their right? We should free them from Gitmo and let them do that. I suggest they all be equipped and dropped at once in specific places in the tribal areas of Pakistan, as a show of international goodwill and understanding.
Environmentally sound as well. Sharks gotta eat, too.
And wasn't our dear SecState in Shanghai talking to the Chinese? Wow, she was right on the spot. Too bad the topic of her conversation was global warming – not NK nukes or missiles. Nice set of priorities!
Mind you, the water boarding (of THREE individuals) wasn't done at Gitmo, but at CIA black sites.
Obama's meme that Gitmo or waterboarding are recruitment tools is just another counterfactual liberal "fact', like how wind and solar can provide all our energy needs, or Americans want to drive econoboxes. Al-Qaeda and their buddies make propaganda vids going on and on about the 'occupation' of Iraq and Afghanistan, and the Evil Joos, and the reconquest of Spain, and the Crusades- but 'torture' isn't even a blip on the radar. Probably because the Islamist nutbars are totally cool with torture. REAL torture.
I prefer the plan where they are bulk shipped to a secure location in Afghanistan, which is more centrally located for repatriation. Then during a power outage, caused by a natural earthquake or somesuch, they all escape. They must have escaped since they have all disappeared. Please direct any further inquiries to the Afghani government which had control of the facility at the time.
The Thunder Run has linked to this post in the – Web Reconnaissance for 05/29/2009 A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention, updated throughout the day…so check back often.
I live in Minnesota. During WW2 large numbers of German POWs were found in the upper midwest. In fact, alot of the farms they worked at had families that sponsored the former POWs to become US citizens. Too bad the crap heaps at Gitmo aren't a thing like those German boys in WW2. In fact, if they close Gitmo and heaven forbid do something stupid like releasing large numbers of detainees to the streets, I suspect some Americans will "deal" them. Wonder if "Bo" Gritz is available?(tongue in cheek)
Another kidnap victim is killed, what would his family do with the animal in gitso??
