Hollywood Gets a Pass as Desperate Dems Crank Up Class Warfare Machine
by Edward AzlantThe Democrats, after getting their butts kicked all through July, are trying to change the momentum by raising the bloody flag of class warfare. Last Friday the House of Representatives voted 237-185 along party lines to enable financial regulators to limit Wall Street pay and bonus packages they deem inappropriate. The new regulation would affect firms worth over $1 billion, whether or not they got government bailout funds. The Washington Post and AP both asserted the House was responding to looming “populist anger,” although polls suggest recent public concern has been over spending and health care.
Class warfare rests on the assumption, usually well disguised and used very selectively, that capitalist profits are a rip-off, a heist, “unearned.” In his recent health-care pitch, President Obama declared insurance companies are “making record profits,” a questionable claim but presumably identifying both the evil enemy and the room for government to save money, if you buy that the government can deliver something as good for the same cost.
This selective economic demonization serves two purposes. First, it attempts to write current history. During the debates, candidate Obama asserted that the economic crisis was the result of the lack of regulation, presumably of Wall Street speculators gone wild. It was a time of frightening mystery, with the pipes of the financial system seemingly clogged. It was evident that exotic financial instruments, like bundled mortgages and credit default swaps, were the clogs. But the meal was the housing bubble, caused mostly by government policies. It was a policy, not a regulatory, crisis. Read Thomas Sowell.
Second, demonizing Wall Street gins up class warfare, an even more reliable tool of progressive demagoguery than those tricky diversity cards. If diversity pieties are likely winners so long as we are different, then class war is surefire so long as those schmucks up there take big scores while we inevitably stew in our envy.
If there is any group that should recognize this hustle, it’s the entertainment community, which lives in a marketplace as clearly defined as Wall Street. Big stars take down big scores; last year Harrison Ford got $65 million, Adam Sandler $55 million, Will Smith about $50 million, and Eddie Murphy about $40 million. The reason: being a true star involves a mystical chemistry between player, camera, and audience, and it’s very scarce in this risky business. Since the demise of the classical, vertically integrated studio, only a star and/or a sequel can secure ticket sales on an opening weekend.
Same story in TV: Oprah made a colossal $225 million, her pal Dr. Phil took home $45 million, Letterman $40 million. To this list, add star athletes (they’re also entertainers): Tiger Woods banked $110 million, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and Finnish Formula One racer Kimi Raik $45 million, Manny Pacquiao $30 million. Maybe Barnie Frank could deem some of Harrison Ford’s pay as unearned or try to take Pac-Man’s money back for taking excessive risk.
Perhaps you think the Wall Streeters deserve more regulation because the government had to bail them out, though some have repaid and the House bill would regulate even non-borrowers. But as John Nolte has pointed out, Hollywood itself, like the film industry worldwide, has long been up to its neck in public subsidies (tax breaks, film offices, use of public spaces), as have TV and professional sports (airwaves, stadiums, transportation, etc.).
A sidelight to all this: most movie and TV stars, super-jocks, and hedge fund managers supported Obama, suggesting that cultural identification trumps economic interest.
Whatever stars and moguls say or do in public, privately they understand the way capitalism works. It’s centripetal, a car wreck that throws off money and progress and wreckage unequally, in many directions (Schumpeter’s “creative destruction“). But even if you’re not a star, you want to be in on the deal. A carpenter or seamstress or driver in the industry, especially attached to a successful crew, makes more than their counterpart in the regular economy, not to mention sharing the freedom and spiritual rewards of the creative life. This is what John Kennedy meant when he said a rising tide lifts all ships.
Demonizing the market economy in the interest of government regulation to equalize things can only screw things up for everybody.

barbara boxer tried more class warfare when she pointed out the "brooks brother's crowd" showing up at town hall meetings. as if only the poor and badly dressed have the right to protest.
What about we taxpayers stop funding the Nat. Endowment for the Arts and let the fat cats like Clooney, Aniston, Streisand fund the arts out of their multimillion dollar takes for substandard "art"?
All rich folks are evil, but some are more evil than others. Obama and his crew have been steadily working through the canon of rich folks trying to shift public envy where it will do the best effect. Unfortunately, they've misfired this time by shifting their rhetoric against regular Americans.
Not to mention, no one has yet pointed out how it's somehow inappropriate according to Congress for businessmen to make a profit when they've been bailed out, but Congress continues to spend on their own creature comforts despite the huge debt hole. Congress just purchased two more luxury private jets instead of the jet fighters our military uses to keep us safe.

Back in the day we were told by Hollywood that "Greed was good." Brothers and sisters of the collective, This was a lie!!
Hollywood and big sports are making obscene windfall profits, CONGRESS SHOULD DO SOMETHING!!!! They are profiting on the backs of the poor and the poorly dressed. When so many are sacrificing and strugggling, how dare they live in a life of luxury and private jets.
The Sacred Cows in Hollywood want all the goodies they can get from Big Bad Capitalism. They want to be against it to show their Down with the People but their for it when it pays-off for them. The only thing these Self Absorbed twits are for is… Themselves.
You short sighted fools. you miss the obvious. We need Government support for entertainment. The cost of movies and popcorn is skyrocketing 15% faster than health care. Perhaps we can import pre popped Canadian Popcorn. And we must limit the unacceptable costs from the actors. Tax actors 90% on everything they make over $100,000 per year. Bighollywood is neck deep in this greedy cabal so beware and I bet they get huge criminal kickbacks from the fake butter flavor industry… Up with movies Down with ticket prices and popcorn and hotdogs and all those other things they have behind the counter
I was typing even while you were posting.. since there are two of us, can we get funding from the GOP or are we already a fake grass roots movement.
nicly done.
Now if you just register with intense debate we can all give you thumbs up. (As it is i give you a thumbs up, it just gets wasted)
nicely done.

One of the oldest games in the book. I believe it's covered in Exodus. Don't covet your neighbor's stuff.
A very ugly human trait.
Like their spiritual leader Marx, they're all capitalists with their own cash.
Question: would you expect a Middle Class Uprising to be filled with well-dressed people?
To quote Vladamir Lenin "…one of the basic conditions for the victory of socialism is the arming of the workers (Communist) and the disarming of the bourgeoisie (the middle class)."
Mark my words, this is a war on the middle class. I know that sounds paranoid, but I am generally a very level-headed person. The evidence is just overwhelming. The key to it all is this: never give up, never surrender. Every other time in the history of the world that this has been tried, the people gave up.
a legend in his own mind, indeed…
Indeed…. my sister refers to him as the "unfortunate looking senator".
fortunately he is still only a Congressman. But he would love Boxer's seat…
What does the President mean by" Insurance company are making record profits" compared to what, compare to other industries,? Who owns the insurance companies , shareholders, the largest of which are mutual funds, investments make for retirement plans and etc.
What profit level would not be " excess"
I thought Waxman did a really good acting turn as the goblin choirmaster in "Harry Potter".
Thank God for the HNWIC! He'll save us all!
Are you kidding? Paula Abdul won't even do "American Idol" for a measly million bucks…
That'll never happen. Just like they won't cap salaries for football or basketball or – pick your favorite sport with an inordinate number of black athletes. I'd bet they'd be willing to cap salaries for hockey, though. Just sayin'.
The Dems don't get it….it's called class WARFARE……my "class" is fairly poor, but we are armed and have enough after tax money to buy ammo.
Points for mentioning Thomas Sowell! And don't forget Walter Williams!
I wish conservatives would actually want to talk about Health care reform. I know you guys hate anything that might be accomplished by Obama, but try to think of the country first and your party 2nd. Insurance companies see you as patsies.
If you guys really think this is socialism and you want to take a principled stand please opt out of Medicare. It is a government run program. You have the right to opt out of Medicare and buy insurance in the open market. Either quit talking about how you hate socialized medicine or put your money where your mouth is and opt out of Medicare.
The truth is that almost none of you actually have principals; you just hate Obama.

Obama and his bunch know you do, which may be another reason for breaking one more promise of 'no one paying above $250 K will see a tax increase…….' or however he said it.
Doesn't really matter the exact words, he never had any intention of honoring it…………..
Not that the second '1st black prez' would dishonor his word, don't you know.
By Grabthar's hammer, the capitalists shall be avenged!
Congress limits salaries on people they do not like while giving themselves more benefits than the formers leaders of the old USSR. Sounds like COMMUNISM to me. Regarding the actors making all this money; they need it to support their illegitimate children , dope habits and the democrats. All crooks run together. It is too bad they did not spend the money on education, acting lessons and condoms.
Edward – this is only your second BH post. Both have been home runs. I looked up your background and understand why. I'm anxiously awaiting more!
Ah! Akin to the reasoned, well thought-out respectful disagreement Liberals continue to have with George W.
If you can get my contributions to medicare back I'll opt out! That goes for social security too. Put your money where your mouth is and fund your own grubment programs. Let me opt out of all of them. And since we are having a serious talk about healthcare reform, how come I haven't heard one democrat say the words "tort reform"? Is it not needed?
as said before just because they're lefty's doesn't mean THEY don't want to be rich..

Actually, I haven't had any principals since I graduated from high school.
I don't hate Obama. I hate what he's doing to this country. I hate the way people in power (media, Congress, etc.) are unwilling to point out the flaws in Obama's plans because they backed his win and can't admit they were wrong.
And basically, you're asking people to double-pay for healthcare so others don't have to pay at all. That's hardly a principled (or principaled) position…
ChiTownTom – You hit the nail on the head. I would be happy to opt out of medicare if I wasn't taxed so heavily to support it. What King T. fails to realize is that inefficiencies in the insurance industry is almost exclusively due to trying to operate in 50 different state regulatory involvements. The industry averages over a long period of time about a 3% margin, so the excessive profits rant by liberal politicians is a load of bull. By the way, those millions of tax paying insurance company employees King T. wants driven out of business by his "single payorship" will create a nice revenue stream drain for Big Government. Big Government makes private industry look incredibly efficient when it comes to controlling costs.
King T. is mostly "trying" to play nice" and this is a site where everyone does a little trash talk, but we don't hate Obama, we do see he is taxing and spending and intruding government at levels not seen since Roosevelt. BTW, nice "Dead" avatar.
Politicians they can contribute to then manipulate when needed…and liberal politicians crave the Hollywood spotlight, it validates them as the *stars* they all feel that they are, in their own minds…does anybody think Henry Waxman LIKES looking in the mirror? But as "Hollywood's Congressman" the man he sees in the mirror every morning is tall, trim, nicely coiffured and doesn't have a face that only an orangutangs mother could love…he suave, he's in power, he's a *STAR*! (nice green tripledigit button there, tip o' the hat!)
are you shaved, showered and dressed? (You know like you have a job to go to?) if so you are already an agent of discontent and either a minion of Big Insurance, or Big Clothing, or Big Shampoo or something.
But you can have an offset if you promise to only buy Gillette razors, You see they were founded by a communist who must have made lots of money but felt bad about it.
I can help make Medicare and Social Security move toward solvency right now. It's easy. Uncle sucker can keep all contributions to date and take me off the rolls. I get to keep all future contributions. I would do this in a heart beat. It won't happen but a guy can dream. As far as the dead avatar… I was inspired by a cat from Tennessee named jed.

Also, I had the idea years ago to turn hollywood Conservative. Create a Hollywood "windfall" tax that caps their income to one million dollars per movie. Every penny over that goes to the government. How can they complain about making a million dollars? Something tells me they would.
King T has it right. Last time I was here, it was the same. Obama haters preaching to the choir and getting all fuzzy and warm because they'd found company under the same rock. I won't be back. Dont' bother to cheer and applaud.
I'd kind of like to see a case where the courts have to justify singling out one industry for regulating pay and ignoring the rest. Of course, if you're getting bailed out by the Feds you have to let them call the tune, but how many other industries get government welfare and tax breaks with no intrusion onto the salaries they pay. If it's fair for Wall St., it ought to be fair for professors and anybody else whose job benefits from federal subsidies. I'd bet that there are some Hollywood studios getting some corporate welfare.
conservatives hate obama and liberals hate America
which side is best for the country – it sure aint the muslim prez side
dkooks and all your other America hating friends are calling you – it is easier on you, so take the zero with you, maybe slow down the damage he is doing to America
lets set a cap on any and all businesses that take taxpayer money – it ist the only fair and equitable way and therefore hollywood would be included
the rich white guilt Real America bashers should lead the way of fairness and equity for "the people", cuz it is what they preach all of the time
or is it just more LIBERAL HYPOCRISY to go with their LIBERAL VITRIOL AND HATE toward the Real Americans
Let's cap all the salaries at NGOs to minimum wage.
[...] PM – Hollywood Gets a Pass as Desperate Dems Crank Up Class Warfare MachineIf Washington will limit the pay of Wall Street Executives, why not limit the pay of Hollywood [...]
Poor KingT – too dim to realize what kind of fiscal ratholes Medicare and Medicaid actually are. Opt out of Medicare? I'll opt out as soon as the gummint quits taking it out of my paycheck. Since money is taken from all wage earners for these, these programs ARE socialism.
As for patsies, there are no greater patsies that the 'true believers' of charlatan Obama. What a bunch of rubes and chumps you are.
GJP is on to something here. Millions of Americans could not afford to go to the movies last year, costs are rising much faster than inflation, and the so-called "stars" of Hollywood are making obscene profits, so clearly a governmental takeover is in order. A single payer system would be optimal – the providers (Hollywood, movie theaters) would be paid directly by the government to make movies using tax money, and the theatergoers will be able to go for free. True, there will be limited seats, and the waiting list to watch a new movie will be 6 months or more, and the movies might not have the high production standards you have come to expect, but hey – it's free! Of course, you can opt out of this arrangement if you like and continue to pay to watch movies at the few remaining private theaters. They will cost ten times as much as now, and you will still be paying the taxes that subsidize the free system, but a great movie going experience can still be had for anybody who can still afford it. Oh, and for federal employees as well, who are naturally exempt from the new program that almost everybody else has to use.
Well of course it’s a war on the middle class – a vibrant and prosperous democracy depends on the middle class; if the middle class is diminished or economically eviscerated, we would become just another South American oligarchy of whatever political orientation. Our elites of every stripe have already sold out; they wouldn't mind in the least being part of the top levels of the nomenklatura, the oligarchy, or the aristocracy in whatever would follow. Just as long as they can lord it over and dictate every aspect of life for the peons. The lower classes already have a choke-chain and a leash around their necks – the necessity of either working at subsistence jobs,or the leash is firmly held in the hands of those who dictate welfare benefits. So, yes – the middle class is an easily acquisitioned target.
Movie theaters should allocate at least 50 per-cent of all their sets to the poor, minorities and other disadvantaged groups as defined by government and reduce the cost of popcorn and soda for the poor.
We need food stamps ( movies stamps) now.it would be good for the unemployed and poor to have something to do. and it would be payed for by a tax on excessive profits made by movies stars.
Movies stars make too much money and .they are evil………lets demonize Movies stars ……..OK
It so much fun to demonize an industry ( insurance companies, oil, medical , food .the list can go on and on ) rich people , that why the democratic party love to do it. and MSM readers love to do it.
@KingT
You need to educate yourself a little. The fact is, 89% of Medicare patients do in fact carry supplemental insurance to cover what Medicare will not (Medigap).* Even so, Medicare patients often have trouble finding doctors who will see them. Physicians who treat Medigap patients must also treat Medicare patients without additional insurance, and some just won't do it.** There is, of course, boutique service available to those willing and able to pay for it. It's extremely expensive, but you get high quality care and quick results.

Any of that ring a bell? It should, it's exactly what opponents of health care reform are warning about. Only, it would be much worse if most people were in the national system. Medicare floats on top of the private system and is partially subsidized by it. Private insurance companies pay at a percentage OVER the Medicare rate. If not for the supplemental insurance the difference in payouts from Medicare vs. private insurance would be even greater than it already is. Rationing and long waits are a natural result of a single payer system, for everybody but the very wealthy and federal employees, that is. The very wealthy will always be able to afford exceptional treatment, and federal employees will be exempt from the system that everybody else has to use. How "progressive."

Keep that picture of Rosemary's Baby and his Italian villa handy. Look at it every time you even think about shelling out good money for bad movies. That way we won't have to read about "Oceans 97"
HGH. Biggest market for steroids and HGH? Rappers and actors, NOT athletes. Where else but Hollywood do you get a gaggle of people who lie for a living telling us what to do, eat, ware, say, watch and believe also tell us to pay taxes when Hollywood was the impetus for the creation of loan-out corporations, where "talent" that makes enough money can find yet *another* way NOT to pay taxes through complex corporate structures.
I remember when I first learned of this kind of tax dodge early in law school. The professor of the entertainment law class acted as if it was no big deal, and I think that was what grated me the most. There is constant drum-beat from the "talent" about all sorts of social issues that usually involve higher taxes and everyone *else* sacrificing, but management/legal admit that such contractual agreements that help "talent" escape "paying their fare share" is just to be expected.
It is expected hypocrisy. Of course, I don't hesitate to say that the vast majority of the people in the industry that I've met and worked with are extremely materialistic. And I don't mean greedy, necessarily – they just see the world and life in very shallow, immediate and egocentric terms (and by egocentric I don't mean they're jerks, just that everything is defined from the self, outward). Add such an attitude to a ton of money and a limitless ego (this is the "jerk" usage) and it's no wonder we get actors and actresses admonishing us plebeians.
Any else remember Sarah Jessica Parker discussing her relatives being on welfare? Any one else pray for forgiveness upon feeling the instant urge to slap her?

Love the reference to Schumpeter. Did a paper on him and his use/rejection/partial re-acceptance of econometrics in college. His journey always instilled in me a great caution over econometrics, how they're used and where they come from. In fact, his observations were instrumental in my taking pretty much any statistic or study with a grain of salt. If you don't examine the methodology, the data charts, etc., you are simply swallowing someone's interpretation of the information. This happens in all science, to be honest. Wasn't there an article floating around the interwebs from a scientist talking about scientists being conformist to the harm of honest scientific investigation? Good article, if I recall correctly.
In any event, I've always wondered: why don't we go after athletes and entertainers? And not just actors/actresses. I mean, let's hit 'em all! Magicians, dancers, strippers, musicians, athletes . . . let's go after everyone who "makes too much money."
the sinner,
Patrick
you certainly must be amused by the types you see- one generally doesn't find devout Orthodox types in the entertainment field… it most definitely affected our involvement in Hollywood. Good points, all…
I usually work with independent films and lower crew. Or, really, production company stuff – not so much with talent. My experience with talent is not profession, but of the casual "I happen to be in the same place at the same time" type of experience.
the sinner,
Patrick
You can't opt out of Medicare. Typical government "benefit".
which is why you're still sane…
