Obviously, Adam Lambert Isn’t Gay Enough
by Deborah WeissIf you haven’t heard of Adam Lambert, you will soon. He is the flamboyant rocker who recently came in second on “American Idol” in a stunning upset by boy-next-door Kris Allen. Adam, the judges’ obvious favorite throughout the show, is a 27-year-old actor-singer who was struggling to make it in the music business until “Idol” came along. A former cast-member of “Wicked,” Adam worked in various Broadway touring groups and avant garde shows in order to pay his rent. But his real dream was to become a pop-rock star.
Adam has an amazing vocal range and a falsetto so rich in quality that it is imperceptibly different from his chest voice. His incredible ability to control his vocals enables him to hold his high notes seemingly forever. His versatility is unmatched in “Idol” history. With the arguable exception of country music (his rendition of “Ring of Fire” received strong emotional reactions both pro and con, as it was more like Johnny Cash doing Goth music with Middle Eastern undertones), Adam excels in every genre of music. He sings soulful ballads to pop to heavy metal and glam rock, all with ease, style, and pitch-perfect tone.
Week in and week out, other “Idol” contestants appeared on stage in sneakers and T-shirts without sets or lighting design, all of which are in the contestants’ control. But enter Adam, and the show began! One could criticize his attire (and did!) but every week Adam came with an outfit, sets, lighting, and moves that fit his song choice and made his performances both unpredictable and more entertaining. He’s not just a singer; he’s the whole performance package.
Unfortunately, talent has not always been the focus of commentary on Adam. Rumor has it that some on the Christian-right refused to vote for Adam because of his ambiguous sexual orientation. Explicit photos of him making out with other men, attending the Burning Man (an annual event in Nevada which constitutes an experiment in community, radical self-expression, and radical self-reliance), and occasionally dressing in drag, detracted from his deserved praise. Supposedly, Kris Allen’s church pastor urged “all believers” to vote for Kris (though Kris emphatically objected to votes based on religion). Additionally, “Idol” contestant Danny Gokey, who touted his Christianity, had a similar performance style to Kris’. His devout following likely swung in favor of Kris once Danny was booted off the show.
Many deemed it unpalatable if not morally wrong to deny Adam his hard earned votes based on sexual orientation. This should have no place in the “Idol” competition. As Kris explained, this was supposed to be a competition about singing, not a vote for the presidency.
Yet, as soon as the winner was announced and the finale was over, the left-wing media started bashing Adam for not being gay enough. Adam has admitted that the explicit photos were of him, and he has not been at all shy about anything including his sexuality. (To date, interviewers have beaten around the bush and have not put the “gay question” to him directly.) But neither has Adam made his sexuality a political issue…at least thus far. Still, the photos and Adam’s behavior, which are about as “out” as can be, still leave some dissatisfied. As is often the case with leftists, words are more important than actions, and one isn’t truly “out” until he mouths the words “I’m gay.” Adam hasn’t done this and thus will suffer the wrath of leftist activists.
No sooner had he walked off the stage than criticism has befallen him — not for his performances, which were controversial but fair game, but for his alleged “silence” on his sexuality. Indeed, Entertainment Weekly Online dedicated four whole pages to chastising him for failing to announce his orientation. But, making one’s private life fodder for public consumption seems to be something the gay community does often. In the recently released film “Outrage,” the filmmaker assumed that if he outed gay Republicans, they would change their votes on gay marriage. The presumption seems to be that gay marriage is the world’s most pressing issue, and everyone who is gay should prioritize this about all else. To hell with national security, the arts, or whatever else one might be interested in.
Adam has acknowledged feeling pressure from some quarters to use his sexuality and “alternativeness” to influence how America views related social issues. Contrary to helping those in the gay community, they are doing Adam and the gay community a disservice. By pressuring Adam to act differently than his straight counterparts, they separate him out rather than allow him to integrate and be accepted as equal. They are also denying him the right to define himself as he wants to be defined and decide for himself how his talents will be used.
It is unlikely that at age three when Adam starting singing around the house, or at age ten when he first began musical theater, that his goal was to achieve success as a vehicle for gay rights activism. Why does everyone who is gay have to represent a political cause? Why can’t Adam just be a singer and an entertainer like other artists? Both those who withheld votes because Adam’s gay and those who are bashing him for not being gay enough, insist on defining Adam by his sexual orientation. But Adam clearly defines himself by his music.
Politics aside, it is apparent that Adam is not going to be a flash-in-the-pan like previous “Idol” contenders. Adam was the only reason to watch the cheesy show this season. My prediction is that he is destined to be a national star, if not international. Offers are already pouring in, and there’s talk of him touring with Queen, being courted for Broadway leads, and making his own CD’s. Refusing to be boxed into a specific genre as most record labels demand, his first album promises to range from pop to rock to funk with innovative electronics. Additionally, he hopes to do corollary theatrical performances. His goal is to fill an artistic niche of theatrical pop music which is currently female-dominated on the scene, and largely devoid of male artists. It is Adam’s artistic expression and personal style that make him notable, not his sexual orientation. If he does have a political message, it’s one of personal empowerment for anyone who might not fit the mold…sexuality aside.
Those making social criticism of Adam based on his sexuality — one way or the other — should apologize. I myself owe him an apology for using his orientation in the title of this article. However, I doubt if he cares much about any of this. Adam is all about the music, and I’m sure he’s too busy singing to pay this any mind.

Umm…. I have to say it.
Who here cares?
we have heard the Queen thing is no joke- reportedly both Brian May and Roger Taylor think him to be spot on perfect, and the Paul Rodgers/Queen thing has kind of run it's course… Mr Lambert is a talented fellow and we wish him well in any endeavour…
It was Danny Gokey's pastor that tried to get people to vote for Kris once Danny was off the show. Kris is from a very progressive family and has become very good friends with Lambert who was his roommate during the show. Kris has been quoted as saying that if anything good came of their time on the show together it would be that their friendship between two very different people was proof that people can get along.
You're quite right
And it seems the only people who do care are the leftist gay media who seem intent on saying to the world "See…he's this brilliant because he's one of us!" I am gay but shocked by the brouha this is creating.
Adam's talent is a once in a generation thing. AI provided the exposure platform he needed. The fact that he is gay is totally irrelevant. What we should be celebrating is the birth of a star for all the world, not a gay icon.
From my decade+ in SF, ostensibly the gayest and most politically active city in this nation, I came to find myself equally aggravated by the rabid left as I did the fundamental right! They "sound" just the same, only the words are different, especially around gay politics and identity. At this juncture in our national history, it seems like the perfect time for us to stop shouting our sexuality and start living it, out loud without explanation or apology! And, without EVER indulging the media's prurient desire for us to "spell it out" for them. (Evidently, bloggers and journalists have forgotten that "a picture is worth 1000 words" adage, because Adam has NEVER shied away from anything. Nor has he felt the need to spell out the patently obvious!) Frankly, if we want to make progress on gay issues, WE — the gay population — need to stop expecting celebrities to carry the day for us (in this case by uttering the words: "I'm gay") and start carrying the day for ourselves! I hope Adam just continues being himself, showing us who he is, both as a performer and as a person and when that includes him holding hands with a hot guy exiting a club, bravo!
Excellent article. "Adam clearly defines himself by his music" is the message everyone should carry. But this is America. Audiences thrive on controversy. When Adam entered the world of celebrity, he unfortunately lost his power to make it about the music only. But I like the balanced view you took with this article. I agree that Adam shouldn't be the poster boy for gay rights — that detracts from his new purpose in life — to give us amazing music.
Thank you for writing this. Adam is already a superstar. Enough already with all this media bull. I am so sick of it . Most people do not care about his sexual orientation. Just listen to him sing! He is a true star.
Great article!! So well phrased and so right on regarding what Adam was about week to week on American Idol. He made me and millions of american watch the show just to see what he was going to do. It was truly a fabulous experience to watch him week to week. Bashers be damned because Adam is a rising star with brilliant talent and deserves to make it in this very tough business. And frankly I don't understand why anyone would want to limit him to his sexual preferences. Who cares!!! Great article and Adam we love you!!
This is just the natural outgrowth of today's PC identity politics society. It really seems to be a refusal to leave high school cliques behind. Here you have your blacks and your hispanics and your women and your gays and your … and your jocks and your preppies and your stoners. See what I mean? For anyone who wants to be themselves and march to their own tune, it's a lonely world. You either fit a pre-defined mold or forever make yourself something of an outsider. I hope Adam can hack it on the outside until he makes himself famous enough to define his own group.
So much for the idea of the individual and individual freedom.
Totally agree with you, Deborah..I think Adam almost transcends sexuality i.e. I think he's bigger and better than any male or female out there–from his performances to interviews to song/wardrobe/staging choices, he is THE most exciting person to come to the forefront in a very, very long time. I'd go to see the Idol tour, but don't want to see anyone but Adam Lambert–heck I might go just to see him for a few songs, and I'm an older mother of three who doesn't even listen to music anymore. You're right –I don't think the show would have been worth watching without him.
Music doesn't exist in a vacuum. Political, social, even moral issues all influence our ability to enjoy a singer's work. The best music is not just a series of aesthetically pleasing sounds, it involves the listener on many levels: emotional, mental, spiritual, etc. If the listener has a serious disagreement with the singer on, say, a moral issue, it becomes difficult or even impossible to engage with the music on that deeper level.
This, as a side note, is probably the main reason why so many people loathe American Idol. It strips music of all its deeper meaning, and turns it into shallow, manufactured plastic.
Frikkin spot on.
Who here cares about what? About Adam? I do. About his sexual orientation? I don't. Kudos to Deborah, this is a very well-written article and voices much of how I feel. Adam's talent excites me – not just his incredible vocals but his showmanship. I love re-watching his weekly appearances on Idol – they were better than a $150 a ticket show in Las Vegas. I'd pay to see him in a concert or show anytime, I'll buy his CD, I'll support his career with my $$$. There is no other performer in the music industry who has excited my interest that way, ever. Let Adam be the entertainer he was born to be and allow his "dare to be yourself" attitude give inspiration. Don't make him about a religious or political agenda.
Great article! You've said it all and said it well. From the begining of the Idol competion I said, "This guy could be a mega, international superstar…another Elvis. If his being gay stops that from happening then shame on us all.
Rock on Adam!
adam has awesome talent! He is gonna be the next big thing. I honestly think he didnt win because of the rumors about him being gay. personally, he is awesome! I think he is gonna be a legend. I am gonna go to every concert he has and be his ultimate fan. P.S. He is also pretty cute!
Because he's a Christian, Danny Gokey's fans are described as "devout"?
I didn't vote for Adam Lambert because I would never buy his (screechy) music. And since people are declaring his superstardom anyway, he didn't need to win, right? AI is a reality show, and lots of viewers like to pick apart everything about the contestants, hence the criticism of Adam for being coy about his sexual preference. Many people said that Kris Allen should have kept his wife in the background, but he didn't.
Very nice article. I can't wait to buy the upcoming albums of Adam. I hope he can visit the Philippines when he will be doing concerts. He is such a wonderful gift from above, not to mention his being gifted as a singer and artist.
I couldn't have said it better myself. You really hit the mark here. All this frenzy over what this man does in his bedroom or who he does it with, is just plain ridiculous. I love the way Adam is handling himself through this.
I'm not sure I have ever seen a person more sure and comfortable with himself. I just couldn't believe there was an actual fox five news special last night, because Adam was walking hand in hand with another Man and opened a car door for him.
Oh and as for barkerman comment, I care, the media cares apparently everyone cares, including you or you wouldn't have read this article.
ADAM rocks he should have won gay or not its ur voice that matter!!!!!!!!!
So glad to read this, Deborah. Absolutely spot on. And kudos to Adam for living his life as he is. We should all be so true to ourselves. It's all about the music – and does he ever make beautiful music! I'm 62, mother of two, one in the entertainment business so I have an idea of how tough it can be.
Just make your music Adam and continue to be YOU! And I TOTALLY agree with spinoc- no artist has ever excited me about music the way Adam has…he is fascinating both in his career and his love for mankind! We should all take a lesson from Adam….he is truly beautiful inside and out!
Adam this season has done more for the gay movement than anyone has given him credit for. He has worked hard to be honest with us all and let us get to know him as a well brought up, respectful son (better than most mainstream kids these days), hard working, creative and not a kid who expects his parents to support him financially. He's been a good friend to his cast mates, the other idols and has a kind spirit. Most of all, however, he never lashed back at anyone and made a case for unity. Now when I see men who are gay, I smile and think to myself that I know more now about tolerance because as Harvey Milk said, once we get to know people for who they are, it becomes personal and therefore nothing to be afraid of. Gd bless people like Adam. Good for you.
Great article! I am really looking forward to seeing Adam perform and to buying his CD's. He is an amazing artist and a beautiful person.
I didn't like him on the show and it had nothing to do with the fact that he's gay. It was because while the vocals were good (there's no denying he's got a great voice), every single week his performances were fake and affected. The posturing was ridiculous. He was no more a "rock god" than Clay Aiken was. Freddy Mercury was the real deal. Mick Jagger is the real deal. Steven Tyler is the real deal. Adam Lambert isn't even close.
Deborah, This is the best article written about the subject of Adam Lambert and his sexual preference. I am a christian male who is straight and my family and I voted for Adam multiple times. It should never have been about his sexual preference. His great talent speaks for itself. It is sad that a great young man cannot do what he loves to do without an agenda put upon him.
Finally…an article that is fair and to the point.
Thank you for this well written article. I too think that Adam should not have to be the poster boy for gay rights. None of his fans cares about it anyway; for me it is all about the music and the performances he will bring to us. He looks happy, and I am glad for him. Another thing to consider is whether or not he is allowed to discuss his sexuality without clearing it with 19 E. We know that his mom signed a contract with them as well, and she said that she is not allowed to discuss it. Maybe the same for him. If so, obviously they have given him the go ahead to do it with Rolling Stone, and this would mean that they see no problem with marketing a gay idol. It is going to be all part of the media blitz. He is going to be huge. Throughout it all, Adam has been a savvy guy and has handled himself with openness and grace. There has been noone else in his league ever on American Idol, either past or present. I am ready to support Adam with my wallet. I say Adam keep being who you are and do it your way!
What a well written article. I remember Adam saying that not everyone would LOVE his music….. Humble as he was when he said it, he can sing anything. … I think anyone with an ear for music HAS to admire his chameleon vocals…….he is a rainbow of sound. . . . I have installed his CD in my car and protected his performances from Idol. on my DVD….I watch to see what he is going to do after the silly Idol Tour (I wish it was a one man show, I would spend $100 to see it)……….but gosh…..let me think…….do I care what he does behind closed doors????? In these days of Linsey Lohan, Britney Spears and the rest……lets get ourselves a life and simply enjoy what he wants to give us……entertainment……The only instrument of interest here is vocal chords..
Nice Article Deborah. It's nice when you see classy journalist like yourself not bash Adam Lambert because of his sexual preferences. It's all about the mans music. I also agree he will be international. Nicely done.
Fantastic. Honestly, I think he's doing plenty. He's been interviewed and has stated plainly "It's really no one's business"…which I think, is the crux of the issue. Gay rights, color lines, feminism, etc…the day we don't notice or point out the difference is the day we have truly achieved equality…not when we feel the need to define ourself by the "difference', but to integrate it into the whole. I applaud Adam for exactly that- in his interviews he's made it plain.."I know who I am" and when it was stated: "is it hanging over your head" he plainly stated "it's not hanging over MY head- it might be hanging over yours". Exactly. the issue is a non-issue. My 6 year old son gets this…"mommy why would anyone vote against him when he has the best voice?".
Exactly. his choices of hair, outfit, and singing might upset you- then don't vote. But when you start choosing a singer based on who they love, it's absurd.
+1
Great article, Deborah! It's been a long time since I've gotten excited about new music, but I cannot wait until Adam Lambert's first album comes out. I never imagined myself even voting for someone on American Idol, much less voting multiple times, plus buying all of that someone's iTunes tracks, but Lambert has inspired me to do so. The man has tremendous talent and appeal that rarely comes on the music scene, much less a reality show. It's sad how all the speculation over his sexuality has overshadowed that tremendous talent. What does sexual orientation have to do with music anyway? Lambert has stated that he doesn't want to be a spokesman for any type of group or movement, he just wants to be able to make music.
I know more Conservative Christians (myself included) that prefered Adam over Kris or Danny. Even my 65 year old, church lady mother adores him.
You write, "Adam has admitted that the explicit photos were of him," as if he was photographed doing something bad or illegal. Admit? Really? He did nothing WRONG to 'admit' to. Someone 'admits' a crime or wrongdoing. I believe what you meant to say was that Adam has CONFIRMED that the photos we him. (By the way, the photos were NOT explicit. Open any magazine or turn on any TV and you will find FAR more EXPLICIT images of Heteros on nearly every page and channel.) We are fine letting our young people watch 2 men kill each other in TV and Movies, yet an expression of affection between 2 men is something that needs to be 'admitted?' This is a nuance I do not expect most Heterosexuals would understand, but it is important. Please choose your words. They matter. And they are far more telling than we sometimes give them credit for. Adam has CONFIRMED that the explicit photos were of him, Deboarh. He was never on trial to make an 'admission of anything.
Best article I've read on this topic. Yeah for Adam's musical talent and accolades to the author of this article!!
Excellent artitcle. This needs to be sent to Perez Hilton and all the others who are pressuring Adam to make an "announcement." Seeing that he is gay is not rocket science. It's ridiculous how some of the gay community is acting. As if the gays aren't having a hard enough time, people and the media insist on trying to harass someone who could be extremely beneficial to the cause. Adam can (and is) being beneficial to the cause by showing that people, whether gay, straight, or bi, ARE NOT defined by their sexual orientation. When we make it to a society in which gay people's orientation is not deemed the center of their existence, but un-newsworthy just as it is with heterosexuals, THEN we have achieved equality for all. Isn't this what Adam is trying to promote? Why can't people understand that? He isn't hiding anything. He isn't ashamed to hold hands with his boyfriend, he wasn't embarassed about the pictures. Hopefully one day it won't be necessary for gays to "come out" just like it is unnecessary for straight people to declare their orientation to the world. It shouldn't matter.
Wow! Thank you for this article. They are all thoughts I've had but hadn't put into words. You're an awesome writer, and I hope your message is heard by those on both sides who denied Adam a vote for all the wrong reasons.
If they came out during the competition then yes, "admitted," because they booted one contestant off for having revealing photos of herself come out during the competition. So while you can say they were nothing wrong, in the eyes of the competition judges who try to maintain a "family friendly" feel to the competition, they may have been deemed too much.
I adore Adam because of his pure genius amazing talent, and that is enough to thank him for sharing his gift to the world. I respect him for being true to the world, no matter what his choices I remain to support his artistry. What an amazing gentleman!
Great article..this comment is for Sarah Nichole…..get your ears cleaned out. Adam is right there with the best of the best.
I totally agree. I am a Christian as well and just loved Adam. I voted for him all season long and felt he really was the best this show has ever seen. He wanted to give America a show and he sure did that. I can't wait for his first album.
i love this article..and i am a 50 year old mother of two who thinks that adam is the greatest talent she has seen in some time. I love that he wants to make music and not be a crusader for any cause. I adored AI because of him and i will see him and buy his CDs and go to any performance that he is in. He is an incredible talent.
Deborah, this really is one of if not the best articlesI have read on Adam Lambert. You are so dead on with everything you have said. Adam shouldn't be judged on anything but his talent of which he has an enormous amount. Someone like Adam comes along maybe every 2 or 3 decades. This man has the ability to make you feel his music down to your very soul. He draws you in, hypnotizes and mesmerizes you. You feel like you are falling into a vortex and don't care if you ever get out! Not only is he outrageously gifted in the vocal, stage presence, and multitalented performer area, he is also humble, gracious and a beautiful person inside and out.
Let Adam make beautiful music like he was destined to do and become the Legend he is destined to be.
Don't make him the spokesperson for political or moral issues. What Adam does in his personal life and with whom is none of our business. Leave the man alone and let him do what he was born to do. Adam is MUSIC!!
He is gorgeous and talented, that is one lethal combination!!
Well said. My adoration for Adam is because of his amazing talent. He is a gentleman I respect.
This article was spot on! Just let Adam be Adam and enjoy the gift he brings to the music world. I for one can't wait for his first CD and if my husband wasn't out of a job I'd buy the most expensive seats to the AI concert just to hear, see him and probably make a fool out of myself and my poor husband!!!!!
Thee best article that I have read about Adam, and I am a avid fan. Thank You!

Deborah , kudos to you for a fantastic article.
I watch Adam's videos and listen to his songs on my ipod every day
My "obsession" with Adam is with his whole package….he's fearless, sexy as hell, "talks to me" when he sings, put 150% into his performances which are fabulous and entertaining, he's exciting, electric, fascinating and oh, yeah, I LOVE his voice!
It was good to read this article and all the previous comments. It shows the love and respect for Adam that is out there. He is an extraordinarily talented person and I love who he appears to be – open, happy, positive, confident, kind, not to mention amazingly sexy and gorgeous. I have never been interested in American Idol but this year I saw Adam at the beginning and then I couldn't wait to see what he would do each week. He is a true charismatic superstar and I can't wait to buy his album. Love to go to a show to see him but I'm in New Zealand so…maybe one day! Who cares what his sexuality is…I like the way he's handling the media pressure around that. He is just being who he is and that is a fabulous, likeable, lovely guy.
Fantastic article, everything that I have been thinking, but do not have the talent to put down on paper. I hope somewhere down the line, Adam is able to read your article. Listen up American (and, it's only America, I'm shouting out to) Let Adam be Adam. He will be the World Idol. Do I care about spending money on Adam Lambert anything, you bet! Do I care if he is gay? Of course not! I live in San Diego and the buzz about Adam is ALL about his incredible talent and what a humble and great guy he is. Just ask Kris. Adam has helped me realize that life's to short to blend in. My 18 year old son is very grateful!
Besides, what a stud!
hopefully the media doesnt drive him into a hole like they drove axl rose
For once I've read an article about Adam Lambert that says it all beautifully. Thank you and well done!
Sincerely,
From a Grandmother of 6 who loves and respects Mr. Lambert
Adam doesn't have to admit to anything, like he said he just want to make music, that's all Adam want's to do. So if this article is correct that Adam is getting pressure from the Gay rights(whatever that means) and use him as for political agenda. That is so wrong for the Gay wanna be people. That is so low, and I will lose my respect to the Gays that trying to use Adam. Adam is smart guy, and I hope he doesn't fall for this BS.
LIke the rest of Adam's fans, the media or the gay community should just leave Adam alone about his orientation. It's the matter of privacy and Adam deserves a privacy to this matter.
Adam is here to be one of the Great Entertainer, and let him do his job. No more pushing him about his orientation and media let's not Harrass Adam about it. It is something non sense to any of what Adam want to do. There are other news that the Press need to focus on… for instant Economy??? hello!
Adam, get that album out soon, and make it a Hit music! More power to you Adam!! Stay gracious, don't let the media pressure you for anything especially your private life, simply it is not Open for public discussion.
Amazing article. So many people that claim to be "Adam Haters" cannot wait to chase the media and every website that has something to do with ADAM LAMBERT. They live to get on line and read all of the newest "gossip". Do they really dislike Adam? I do not think so. I think they are infatuated! Do these people have a problem with soldiers (that might be gay) standing on the front lines protecting us? You do not hear them complaining about that. What about the waiters, grocery clerks, nurses, or doctors that are gay? Oh no, (no complaint there). The sexuality of one has nothing to do with the kind of job they do. So, for all of you who do have a problem with ones sexuality, maybe you should start asking your Doctors, Lawyers, Preachers,Waiters, and others if they are "gay" before you associate with them. My, My what an idiot you would be!
BRAVO for your article! Exceptionally well written and intelligent. I am a HUGE Adam Lambert fan and appreciate your support and understanding. Thank you for communicating your thoughtful opinion for other Adam Lambert fans to enjoy. I am a totally straight, married female who has found happiness through Adam's genius, creativity, and music. I look forward to being in the front row of his first (or many) concerts!
Love this article. Very well articulated. Adam has been off the show for two weeks and I guess by now people expect him to have branded the letter G in his forehead, held a national press conference and provided video evidence of his sexuality. Even then it probably wouldn't be good enough. He has to come out based on a timetable set by a thousand different sources. His vocal ability and stage performances seem to take a back seat to whom ever he might have in his bedroom. Without a shadow of a doubt he is the greatest performer that has ever graced that American Idol stage. Not one person has ever had a combination of both vocal skills and performance ability. According to AI execs Adam had free reign over his wardrobe, lighting, and performance. The other contestants had the same but did little more than show up on stage as if they were heading out to Home Depot after the show to pick up some mulch.
Coz , You said it all and you said it well. I am a 51 year old grandmother, a vocalist in my day, and a Christian! I know that the "true" Christian voted on talent, I was appalled that votes were being cast based on anyone's sexuality! He is brilliant and he is one of us–a human being!
I join you in celebrating the birth of a star for all the world and I look forward to witnessing a talent such as Adam rise to the occassion with grace and class!
My ears are spotless, but thanks for the concern! I've been an audiophile and a serious student of music for over 20 years now. I know good music when I hear it. The guy has a great voice, I'd never deny that. But he's acting. He's putting on a ridiculously over the top show, trying to prove that he's a rocker when he's not. It's all fake posturing, and it's completely transparent. There were many, many people watching the show who felt the same way. He wasn't a rock star, he was pretending to be one, just like that Robbie kid from last year, the one who used to tour with Britney Spears. The only difference is, a few of you actually bought it this time.
In a world where homophobia is still so palpable, I must respect the right of a gay people to protect themselves by keeping they sexual orientation as a private matter. I think Adam is doing even too much by exposing himself holding hands with his boyfriend, admitting his identity in the pictures we all know about (which I personally do not find disgusting, maybe a tad explicit), and not simply denying his homosexuality straightforwardly, which a lot of celebrities might do (and, again, I will still understand if that was his chosen course of action). Actually, I fear for his career right now. I know he is a very talented person and he will only improve with time, practice and experience. But if he didn't manage to obtain the very deserved first place on a show where he was obviously the best due to the sexuality issue, I can't help but wonder if people will be intelligent and civil enough to support a raising star who is also incidentally homosexual. I don't think his music is divorced of other issues. He is not denying anything. He is admitting it as much as he's able to without breaking a contract, which he worked really hard to obtain. Keep strong, Adam. You are a star and, as some interviewer said, you are a magical person.
I agree 100%. When you have to break out the screechy caterwaulling every single song…the only song he did that impressed me at all was "Mad World".
Sarah may I remind you that Adam has never once called himself a rock god. It's his fans who refer to him as a rock god and they're just as entitled to their opinion as you are. Your opinion of Adam is obviously influnced by the fact that he's gay otherwise why would you compare him to other gay entertainers such as Clay Aiken of all people. I guess it never occurred to you that Adam's posturing when performing comes natural because he is gay and who are you and by what authority can you say that Adam's performances were fake when MILLIONS of
people who love Adam and are fans of Adam see his performances as entertaining. No doubt you would have said the same thing about Elvis had you been around when he first started entaining.
Agree totally with your article on Adam. He is absolutely brilliant as a vocalist and entertainer. He is by far the most amazing artist to come along this generation. What a shame that America is so hypocritical. Such an inspirational singer like Adam should make everyone proud and wish nothing but the best for him. Is everyone supposed to follow the same road……should we all be like sheep and dare no one stray or they will be strung up and stones thrown at them. I apologize to Adam from the bottom of my heart for all he has to go through. He won the Title of American Idol pouring out his heart and soul out every week. Shame on America and it's so called Christian nay sayers…….And his voice and stage presence is right on par with Jagger,Tyler,Plant and Mercury!!!!!!!!! His vocals are Unbelievable !!!!!!!!!!!!
'ENTERTAINING'
I love this article. Everything that Deborah has said is absolutely true. Adam is one of the most gifted singers and performers I have seen – EVER. I will continue to say this no matter what his sexual orientation is. IT DOES NOT MATTER. People really have to base their judgement on the real matter that is at hand – THE MUSIC. Regarless of one's opinion on homosexuality or bisexuality, it has absolutely nothing to do with Adam Lambert's increadible talent. This guy is going to go very far, and honnestly people must learn not care about things that are none of their business. I think that Adam has made the right decision by being coy about his sexuality – not because he should be ashamed of it or because it is wrong – but simply because it should not be an issue. Like many say, straight people do not have to define themselves and tell the world what they do in the bedroom. Well Adam should not have to either. He is an intelligent, well brought up gentlemen who has been blessed with an amazing gift. Adam Rocks!!!!!!!!!!
I applaud the author of this well written article and one of the commenters in particular, David Niel. Like the author of the article said so eloquently, Adam defines himself by his music. He lives it, He breathes it, it soothes his soul and is his medicine…etc…he is such an endearing soul.
I applaud Adam for moving beyond circumstances and mentalities, allowing himself to LIVE OUT LOUD…WITHOUT EXPLANATION OR APOLOGY!!! (thanks David Niel for that statement) If his gorgeous voice weren't enough to bring you to your knees with admiration, his strength and belief in himself deserve a standing ovation…and I am here giving him a big one now!
Love you, young star!
Deborah, you are brilliant. Glad to read this WELL SAID article. I sooo agree "Adam clearly defines himself by his music." Adam is a truly amazing artist. His career is gonna be HUGE. Cant wait to buy his own CDs and cant wait to see him more and more.
so i'm guessing you've never been to the theater, seen a staged play, never gone to the movies? these are all staged, costumed,(fake and affected) productions. mick jagger? have you never gone to one of his concerts? the staging alone takes 3 days to construct! eye liner and costumes–take a close look at jagger and his band mates, not to mention any and all of the rockers out there. stage production IS their way of life! maybe you should get out more.
Great article. Adam is all about the music!
Adam, we are sorry for being such a pathetic judgemental society . We the collective "do gooders" think nothing of invading other peoples privacy and disregarding their feelings. We are like dogs after red meat.
And you Activists, BACK OFF! Go hang your sign on someone else. You are no different. Go find a willing spokesperson!
Lovely column, Deborah – kudos to you for taking the less-traveled high road. That said, why can I not remember there being the same media frenzy over SIR Elton John? Could it mean that Adam is destined to surpass even him? How privileged I feel, at 70+ years, to witness the birth of this superstar who is already known worldwide as simply Adam. It's been a long time coming – but well worth the wait.
Deborah, thank you for writing such a insightful article on Adam! He has not only shown his fantastic talent abilities but also his kindness and manners for all to see. A remarkable youg man that I would be proud to have as a son. My husband and I have bought tickets to see him perform next month and that date can't arrive soon enough.
I totally agree with your article. It seems like the gay community would be behind him instead of tearing him down. Kudos to Adam for being above the fray! We love him for his talent and singing and performance abilities NOT his sexual preference. I LOVE YOUR ARTICLE and thank you, from an AVID ADAM FAN!!!!!!!!
What a great article!!! Adam is the best artist in decades, and I mean artist because he is not only an exceptional singer, he is an actor, a dancer, and he knows how to deal with all his talents through his outstanding personality. He IS already a World Idol. We, Adam´s fans, come from all over the world. I am in Spain with family and friends in South America, and we have all fallen for Adam. I play his music while driving to work, while working, while reading the newspaper, and when I am taking a shower I hum sing songs. Adam has revived my love for music and entertainment.
With all that is going on who cares about this guy? Maybe people with no life? Good luck to him in his career but whether he makes it or not does not even make it on my radar screen
I don't give a hoot how gay he is the dude can sing no doubt about that, Probably better off losing american idol as he will make more money than Chris will.
I guess YOU have no life if you are even reading this….or wasting your most valuable time to respond. Who are you trying to kid(yourself maybe)
The World is about "Gay". "Gay"…."Gay" Toothpaste Commercials, "Gay" Entertainers…"Gay" Glad Garbage Bags…."Gay"….."Gay" sells print "Gay" Sells…"Gay" sells Media…Gay- a hijacking of the word "Cheerful" "Gay"….An Obamified "Gay, BISEXUAL..a kind of non-gay gay..Lesbian or "Woman Gay"..and Transgender…a "Gay-then-turned-Heterosexual-Gay – MONTH now for every June in the United States…We NOW have a month dedicated sexual compulsions in America.."…………"Gay" are people who primarily define themselves by what they do with their genitals and do so publicly. I'm tired of "Gay"…so VERY tired.
I guess we will just have to wait and see how well he does but more than a few of us disagree with your opinion. I also know great music, and as I said before you know what they say about opinions. How do you pretend to be a rock star? Either you are good or you are not. Adam has a great voice(as you said) and he knows how to capture an audience. He captured millions of people.
Kris Allen's pastor didn't ask people to vote for Kris, Danny Gokey's pastor did.
Adam is so smart. He must be loving this. People are talking and haven't stopped. Heard much about Kris Allen lately? Seen any pictures of him holding hands with his wife? Does anyone care? This guy Adam is very savvy and at this point in time America is ready for him. I am proud of my country. A black president and a gay rock star.!
I didn't vote for Adam because I didn't care for his style of singing, but his talent is undeniable. Neil Patrick Harris is gay, but it doesn't define him and he doesn't spend any time discussing it. He would rather focus on his acting. I believe Adam feels the same way and he should be allowed to be that way if he sees fit. I am a heterosexual woman, but it doesn't represent who I am, and it would be ridiculous to think it does. Go on Adam, sing your songs, put on your shows and have a great time. You don't owe anyone anything.
I did not vote for Kris is not because he is christian while I am a atheist. It is because his style and his voice really just turn me off, not to mention I cannot stand his facial expression although it is not personal. While I respect your preference, I would like to correct you that "screechy" is not found in Adam vocal (My husband and I have been training vocalist for the last 25 years, so we know a little bit about singing).
It is not Adam being coy on his sexual preference, both Adam and his mom are legally blind with AI in keeping his sexual preference closed until otherwise is permitted to. I supposed Kris did not have to face the same requirement from AI on his marital status.
WHEW!!!!!!
Anderson, u r either an idiot or totally tone deaf, go read the expert's opinion on Adam's singing b4 u start classifying him screechy !!!
http://www.sdnn.com/sandiego/2009-05-12/things-to...
Good article, Deborah! I agree completely. Home run.
one of the best articles written about Adam thus far..it's true that the only reason for American Idol this season is Adam…He brought the show back to life..the bar has been raised so high, next season's Idol contestants will have a tough act to follow… he is no Freddie Mercury nor Elvis nor Steven Tyler because there will only be one Adam.
Have to echo most of the comments and say it was refreshing to read your article. I wish someone would also write something in depth about the quality of Adam's voice. I am so weary of people saying he screams. He hits notes that are unbelieveable. His voice suits what he is singing. Anyway, I am preaching to the choir here. He appears to be a wonderful person with a very special voice. He has charisma coming off every part of him including those black finger nails and is already an international star. Hopefully the right and left will leave him alone to allow him to fulfill his special talent, but Adam is apparently a strong person and will overcome the politics. Thanks for the good work.
Deborah, I totally disagree w/ your statement:
"Yet, as soon as the winner was announced and the finale was over, the left-wing media started bashing Adam for not being gay enough."
You REALLY need to provide a link to this statement! I have read just about everything that's been posted about Adam & have found nothing of this. It's really the mainstream media, such as yourself, who's exploiting this very private issue of one's sexuality.
BTW, I'm a Glambert, so ROCK ON, Adam!!!
I don't watch "Idol" and never heard this guy sing. I know less about the guy he lost to. But I have seen pix of Adam in news coverage. "…AMBIGUOUS sexual orientation." Really? You think so? What, are you blind? The guy is gayer than … well, fill in the blank. If he has a great voice like you say, I hope he does well.
I spent some time today listening to Queen, Freddie Mercury, then I went to listen to Jerry Lee Lewis, and then Elvis, and then Adam. They all have a permanent place in my heart. with 1000's more. Because I raised a handful of children and was on a stable schedule, I listened to music. My ear has been honed to MY perfection, what I like, what I love and what I can't live without. Its my skill. I love Amy Winehouse, and I am heart broken her struggles are life threatening. I love Duffy, Nina Simone, Sam from the Star search era that sang Somwhere Over The Rainbow, get the picture. I have picked each Idol winner except Ruben Stoddard. In my opinion a parents job is to raise theri children to be Happy, Let them go to their success. and who cares who Adam loves. Who I am is Good Enough, teach that to the people you care about. No one has to like Adam if it doesn't fit. I love Che Guevara, for his heart. Motorcycle Diaries was a fabulous story about a kind heart. My cat makes me feel good, My grandkids make me feel good. Adam makes me feel good. Who cares as long as you know.
Here, here!!! Agree totally!!
this article really needed to be written. . . i agree that adam has actually handled the issue of his sexual preference brilliantly. he certainly has not tried to hide or cover up anything (witness his presence, his make-up/outfits, his changing the words of songs to make them gender neutral: what more do we want here people??). perhaps, finally, on the cusp of the career he has sought his entire life he is not inclined to make his sexuality the main event. but really — changing lyrics, shouldn't that prove that he wants to present himself as honestly as possible through his music? what an incredible talent he is — and what a sexy guy! so many women i know find him hot and assume he therefore must be bi. i take him at his non-verbal word that he is gay, but frankly don't understand why he is so compelling as an artist in such an overtly sexual way despite this. any ideas out there??
As a virgin idol watcher from Arkansas, I was hooked mid-season after I saw Adam perform. As an Adam fan, it has been very interesting to be surrounded by Kris fans. No one expected Kris to win, and every Wed. the talk around the table was about Adam's talent. I am very proud of my fellow Arkansan for being Adam's roommate. He would have been even if he wasn't married, he's just a good guy….just like Adam. It was rumored that Danny refused, so the good guy won in the end, even if he wasn't the most talented.
Great Article. Adam is incredibly talented, and frankly it should matter one bit what his preferences are, what his religion is, what ice cream he likes. IT DOESN'T MATTER. WHAT DOES MATTER is the fact that we have been GIVEN THIS GREAT ARTIST who can create new music, perform for us, entertain us, make us happy, and who happens to also be a great guy. Why do we always try to kill the goose that lays the golden egg? We should team up and as a force dampen the media that is so negative and debilitating, and come together as a positive force in support of ADAM. Buy his albums and songs on ITUNES, buy tickets to his shows, continue to post positive comments about him, because he needs our support. WE LOVE YOU ADAM! STAY POSITIVE AND BE TRUE TO YOURSELF BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT YOU.
Laurie – Correction to prior message, "it SHOULDN'T MATTER", sorry for the typo!
disagree. not fake and affected but PERFORMANCES based on a different philosophy, an extremely wide ranging talent, and the need to present himself on the show in 2-3 minute segments. rolling stones/jagger, probably my number one all time favorite group, pranced around and postured like mad — but always in the same way. i think what u r missing is that adam likes to become the character in the song he is interpreting; and since he can do/sing ballads, blues, rock, swing, theater pieces, r&b (need i go on) equally well, it looks like he is too much of a changeling to u. i see it differently and find his performances always effective (and affecting rather than affected).
I don't know who you are Sarah, what generation you are from, or your background, but you are full of it. I grew up with Freddie Mercury, the Stones, the Beatles, the Doors, Bowie, all of them and ADAM IS THE REAL DEAL. Believe me, his vocals are out of this world and something to be in awe of. I actually think his rendition of we are the champions was equal to or better than Freddie's! So back off. Didn't your mother teach you that if you have nothing nice to say, don't say it? Adam is a gift, and we should all appreciate him. If you don't like him, keep your mouth shut.
You made some valid points, I did feel a bit of sadness when I found out Adam is gay as it ruined the emotional connection I felt with him, but only by a bit. Nevertheless he is just so undeniably talented and captivating that I just can't resist adoring him. Plus a girl can still dream, not like I had a chance even if he was straight
It's not necessary that you LIKE Lambert's singing; Pavarotti wasn't to everyone's taste either. But "screechy" is absolutely the wrong word. Lambert's high notes are not rough and random (which is what "screechy" implies) but absolutely spot on, in perfect pitch, and held for ages. Only a very gifted and very well-trained singer could accomplish that; few men, in particular, can reach such notes. (He gets to those high notes in his regular head voice, not in falsetto, which is truly extraordinary. And he transitions from chest voice to head voice with seeming ease, with no vocal break–also extraordinary. Try it!) Again, you don't need to like his style–but at least describe it accurately.
What a great article!! Thank you so much for your eloquent words. While the competition was going on, I enjoyed googling Adam's name to read the many articles about his amazing performances and incredible vocal talents. Since the disturbing end of the show, all I can find is idiotic article after idiotic article demanding Adam to "come out". This ignorant nonsense is overshadowing our celebration of discovering the world's next megastar. My heart aches for this beautiful, sweet soul — he knocked himself out week after week giving us unique and compelling performances, while conducting himself with great respect and humility. Not only was his well-deserved title stolen by a handful of power-texting hillbilly homophobes, now he has to put up with the fools in the press trying to strong arm him into making some kind of declaration. Adam — your millions of fans adore you and will support you and forever rejoice in your professional success and personal happiness. We love you ADAM!!!!
Nice comment, deebus, Thanks!
"I love Che Guevara, for his heart." Okay, that's it. Che was a murderous, vicious thug. Read REAL history about this criminal and not the stupid glowing fawning by comrad communists teaching in academia or white-washing by Hollywood commie sympathizing elitists.

Yes, your 6 yr old son get's it….why can't adults? ha. Thanks, Lisa.
Deborah, thanks for the article. I would have to agree with Paula Abdul – Adam is the bravest contestant Idol's ever had. His voice is spectacular, he's gorgeous, he's charismatic, and his sexual orientation is immaterial. I'll continue to support his career. The shrill voices of the far left and some of the so-called journalists (and we all know who they are) are the embarrassment. You go Adam – keep making beautiful music.
You are so right Anne. I wanted to go to the tour just to see Adam but then said I wasn't going to give AI any money because I am still upset with the voting system. I am waiting to see Adam at his OWN performaces.
He is incredible and I can hardly wait to see what he does next.
I'm sick of all this "gay" talk. So what, I love who he is as a human being and don't give a crap about his sex life. It is no one's business. How come they don't make such an issue over straight contestants!
I'm a grandmother of two and will follow him the rest of my life. I think he is so geniune and incredible as an artist.
AI is suppose to be about Talent and not your sex orientation! He was the best thing that ever hit that stage on AI and they know it !!!
I agree. I think we have just experienced the making of a legend! I will buy every CD and go to concerts just to see him. He is such a good person and humble.
Carly, I think Adam just exudes sexuality, sensuality, and confidence when he performs, and he directs it at everyone in the audience – he's an equal opportunity turn-on! So thank you Adam – and just keep doing it.
Not everyone is influenced by the personal life of an artist. I do not care on whip about the personal life of any singer out there. All I care about is if their music moves me, does it make me feel good, does it make me want to dance, does it make me cry, does it make me feel sexy. Adam's music does all those things for me and I could care less about his preferences. I love Adam to pieces. I am witnessing the birth of a mega star and more power to him!
I resent your idiotic generalization about the so-called "leftist" press demanding that Adam out himself. The only demand that I have seen published anywhere (and I have done alot of looking) has been from Perez Hilton, who is clearly deranged.
Having said that, I should have expected left-bashing from a column under the aegis of Andrew Breitbart, a known right-winger who will use ANYTHING included of all people, Adam Lambert, to make another pointless, clueless, left-bashing point.
Hear Hear trainer!! Anderson obviously does care about ADAM that is why he/she posted under an excellent ADAM article …
Why are you commenting here if u dont like ADAM ! Go and write comments at the KRIS site !
LOOSER!
Best article ever!!! Thanks Deborah! Adam is our WORLD IDOL !!
He is the BEST there ever was or will be !!
Adam has nothing to worry about, He will be fine. Being the idol winner can be a curse for someone as unique as Adam. But to be honest, as I said in a prior thread, Kris deserved to win because he was more mainstream. And he is very talented in his own way. I have been very impressed by his original takes on songs,
I think the top 5 on this season will probably do well post Idol. I am really looking forward to Allison's career. She was also an amazing act. Adam will see a lot of success as long as he gets good songs.
AMEN AMEN and AMEN!!! Well said! why do they keep hassling him – leave him alone and let him do whatever he wants, it's his own business! geesh
btw I LOVE ADAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's the best!
Thank you for the article. It is good to have a journalist praise Adam instead of put him down. I love Adam and I support him with my $$$. I paid $175 for my Idol ticket. Will gladly buy his CD when it comes out. I wait with baited breath. #2 is the new 1st. Adam is the American/World Idol.
I totally agree with your article!! Adam has the most amazing talent and I can't wait to hear more of his music! He seems like a very kind and humble individual and the media is definitely more interested in his personal life than I am. I can't thank him enough for the excitement he brought to American Idol this season!!! His voice and show stopping performances were the best ever seen on the Idol stage!!!!
All of Adam's fans already knew that he was gay. And we don't care one whit. We loved Adam from the minute he sang Bohemian Rhapsody. Do not fear for his career. Adam will be just fine. This is destiny. He was born for this. So don't worry your pretty little head. Just watch.
This is the best article ever written about Adam Lambert and his sexual preference.
I personally don't agree with the Christian opinions, God tells us not to judge and they are judging Adam, just because of his sexual orientation, they are ignoring everything good about him. I'm a Christian myself and I'll just leave it to God, I love Adam Lambert because I think he's worth it and probably because I never had an issue with gays or bis, it's just a lifestyle, (btw, gay guys are usually super hot haha)
Hey, thanks for this link! Substantive and fresh articles about AL are rare and far between!
Wow, Deborah, articulate, intelligent, clear-headed and spot on! As one who has found myself completely transfixed by Adam from day one (though he may not have been my usual "type") his talent is like nothing I've ever experienced. And the problem, I think, is that every contingent wants to lay claim to him. I am a staunch liberal and an advocate for gay rights, but I too, have been infuriated by those who are so determined to make him their poster child that if he doesn't dance to their tune, they'll tear him down. It's beneath contempt.
I even read an article where the writer had the audacity to equate Adam's sexuality with his "identity." What the? I thought that was the most abhorrent statement I'd ever read (well, outside of Limbaugh). For people who have been fighting the battle that they are so much more than they're sexuality to turn around and sling mud at one of their own because he wouldn't be their puppet, it's sickening. I was outraged. And our sexuality our identity? That's like me saying, "I'm tall, that's my identity."
And another thing that's so amazing about Adam is how he has walked this razor-thin tightrope, being attacked from both sides about things that have nothing to do with his brilliance as an artist, performer and exceptional human being, but the myriad agendas that the world is trying to pin on him. He needs to walk around with a shirt that says, "Post no bills" on the front and back. He has handled it with grace, humor, class and humility. God, can we all learn to be Adam, please?
Harley 2002
"With all that is going on, "who cares about this guy? He doesn't even make it on my radar screen."
Really? You had to read through two pages of comments to make your "I could care less" comment.
I am so with you on your comments! I have never voted for anyoneon AI, I have never bought an Itune….before Adam lambert! I too voted multiple times and bought every Itune and video out there that was available for Adam…burned CD's from those Itunes and gave copies to many of my friends. I am a 52 year old mother of five and grandmother of 6. It's about talent and charisma people and Adam has an abundance of both!! He is a truly amazing performer and fantastic human being. And that is ALL that matters!!! Love you Adam.
Thank you. Finally, an article that is spot on. If all the other writers could just realize how ridiculous they continue to sound. I can't believe they want to look so stupid. The rest of the world is perfectly aware that Adam is gay and guess what, we got it without acutally hearing him say the words: "I am gay". Has he ever tried to hide anything? No…….so come on media, let's stop making yourselves look ridiculous!!!!! We don't care!!!!! This guy is the best entertainer to come along in decades. It's know wonder the judges praised him as they did every week. How could they not? Were they supposed to lie? His performances were totally beyond any other idol performances…..EVER. There are so many people I know that only watched the show this year because of Adam and none of us care one bit that he is gay. May God bless Adam, may he remain humble and continue to practice patience with the ridiculous media.
I'm from Australia was so glad to see this article and all of the positive comments. I am 57 and as straight as they come. I tuned into Idol ( 2 weeks before the end !) after a friend mentioned how great Adam was. I was totally blown away by him and think he is the best performer I've seen anywhere in years. I will be following his progress with interest – I think he is destined for major stardom. It is of absolutely no relevence that he is gay. It's just a pleasure to see him perform and he seems like a nice guy too.
I'm with you. I think the affected, emotional deficit is in Sarah's soul, certainly not Adam's talent. She could probably hear Andrea Bocelli sing "O Holy Night" and not be moved. Pity.
To Sarah Nichole and Cpm I would like to point out that Adam Lambert is the only American Idol Contestant to
receive four stars for "all" of his performances on American Idol as proven on the American Idol web site.
Adam Lambert is the only contestant this year to receive a standing ovation from "all" four judges this year. Adam was the only contestant this year to receive a standing ovation from an American Idol mentor, namely
Smokey Robinson. Adam was the only contestant ever told by the judges that he's the best performer to ever grace the stage of American Idol. Adam Lambert is the only American Idol contestant to be compared to such great entertainers as Elvis. Adam is the only contestant from American Idol who has millions of fans in America
and in every nation on earth.
It is not so hard to understand Earthlings. Although I am having great diffiulty understanding all of your pertubations around Adam Lambert's sexual proclivity. I do not know what that has to do with Singing! On my Home Planet, USP, our civilization is rather androgenous. When we are attracted to each other in that "special way", we stalk our prey and show lots of intimate interest in the Being. Carefully, we endeavor to pierce the personal shell. We create lots of images, do a media RSS feed and let the photons and electrons do their work.. Procreation is stirring…. electrifing! That is our way, invade personal space and set the charge that will ignite the orgastic experience.. That is not so different from YOU, just more advanced…in that we admit that the chase is a libidinous drive. You must feel that way about Adam Lambert. Yes?
See, we have much in common…. Intimate interest is interesting and sex is quarkable.
thanks for a smart, sane article and for speaking up for the folks out here who just love music…
by the way, i don't think adam failed to take 1st place because of his sexual ambiguity and charged persona; in fact, i think all that helped him. i just think he picked the wrong songs for the last week or so of the competition. he went all perfectionistic bombast instead of more slow sad heartbreakers. that would have sealed the deal. to a large extent, this show is about 2 things: talent, and the songs you pick.
the sex talk in the media was a lazy hook, just something to pin his not winning on, something to write about. if his outre style were such a problem, he'd never have made it this far. anyway, he's great and will have a great career.
This whole article is gay.
This was a great article. I especially love this line: Why does everyone who is gay have to represent a political cause? Why can’t Adam just be a singer and an entertainer like other artists?
I think you wrote down everything that I feel perfectly in this article. It's silly that people are criticizing him for not being gay enough, and pressuring him to come out on a magazine cover to tell the world. For me, I think Adam is being who he is, and not hiding anything as certain quarters accuse him of doing. By gay websites (for want of a better description) calling for Adam to come out publicly, aren't they alienating their community even further by holding themselves to a different standard? Can't he just be Adam the singer, and not Adam the gay singer?
Considering that lifelong rock fans, the rock media and stars and legends in rock itself have been full of praise for Adam, I hope you don't mind if I take their opinions on him more seriously than yours, Sarah.
Oh Cpm, please do yourself a favour. You would have thought that the ridiculous criticisms of "screeching", "screaming", etc would have ended after Danny Gokey demonstrated exactly how difficult it is to do what Adam does effortlessly.
I agree with you all – Coz, I LOVE "Adam's talent is a once in a generation thing" and "… celebrating … the birth of a star for all the world." Those sum up the Adam phenomenon beautifully! Liz, your comment is cute, but -if you care- the expression is spelled "Hear, hear!" (I love grammar, and discovered the origin of this phrase: " 'HEAR, HEAR!' IS AN ABBREVIATION FOR "HEAR, ALL YE GOOD PEOPLE, HEAR WHAT THIS BRILLIANT AND ELOQUENT SPEAKER HAS TO SAY." Pardon my correction, but I can't help myself … (!) In Adam's case, we can just substitute, "Hear what this brilliant and eloquent artist has to sing!")
Fabulous observation, Carole! Whenever I've heard the "screaming" or "screeching" remarks, I've asked how it can be a screech when it's pitch-perfect! I felt really bad for Danny that night – Maybe listening to Adam do it right time after time gave Danny the false confidence to think that his voice, too, could reach the heavens.
14 minutes and ticking quickly …
For those claiming this article is biased against the "left wing" and that Perez Hilton is the only one who has taken Adam to task for not officially coming out (while I don't think he could be much more out unless he tattoos the proclamation on his forehead) – take a look at what's been written by at least two different columnists for Entertainment Weekly. There are gays in the media who feel he has betrayed them and himself because he doesn't start every interview with, "Hi, I'm Adam and I'm gay". I have no doubt at all that the entire timing of the grand "announcement" is being orchestrated by his Idol handlers for maximum marketing impact and I'm just sorry that the subject has any marketing value, because it shouldn't. The cover of Rolling Stone, for a singer who has not yet recorded an album? It don't come easy, you know it don't come easy! He has never denied it, he shouldn't have to say anything at all. Does he have to stand up and say "I'm Jewish" as well to avoid alienating the Jewish population of the world? No, that is a non-issue, as his sexuality should be.
As for 14 minutes – oh, this guy is going to have so many more than 15 minutes – we'll be counting it in years, or decades, if he is able to maintain his composure and passion for his music while being bombarded from all sides by those who would make him their pawn.
Anne Jackie fabulous! this man has a powerful soul and some people want to reduce him to labels to fit their causes.
Okay, Sarah, Adam's style, sound may not be to to your particular liking, but some of the other replies to your comment appear to be from folks who know something about vocals. I'd just like to point out the final
competition show, when Adam and Kris had to sing the very difficult Kara Dio written song. Adam nailed every note and Kris could not even reach some those same notes, let along hold them. I do like Kris for what he does, it's just that so many others "do" the very same thing. Also, my sister in law was at the Wednesday finale, and said that Adam absolutely owned the stage whenever he was out there (as I believe he always does). And he does that while obviously interacting with the other performers in such a way as to divert attention to them as well. So polished.
"celebrating is the birth of a star for all the world"
Isn't this why Obama was elected? The world need a new Star!
Celebrity-worship is a sickness of the mind and body; idol-whippers…sucking on Celebrity will not bring any measurable meaning to your lives.
Go get a life Celebrity-worshipers, it is really sad to see how pathetic your lives are when you need Celebrity Stars to fulfill you.
Rome burn while Nero fiddles yet Celebrity-worshipers STILL need more Stars.
Celebrity-worshipers are harder to know than heroin addicts; at least, heroin addicts have a drug that is real, Celebrity-worshipers are addicted to illusions.
Celebrity-worshipers, do you realize that your addiction to Stars has made you into the biggest humiliation the world have ever seen?
Celebrity is the the joke and worshipers are the butts of the joke: "The population was dumbed down through a politicized and substandard education system based on pop culture, rather then the classics. Americans know more about their favorite TV dramas then the drama in DC that directly affects their lives."
"It must be said, that like the breaking of a great dam, the American decent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple, excuse me dear reader, I meant people.
True, the situation has been well prepared on and off for the past century, especially the past twenty years. The initial testing grounds was conducted upon our Holy Russia and a bloody test it was. But we Russians would not just roll over and give up our freedoms and our souls, no matter how much money Wall Street poured into the fists of the Marxists.
Those lessons were taken and used to properly prepare the American populace for the surrender of their freedoms and souls, to the whims of their elites and betters.
First, the population was dumbed down through a politicized and substandard education system based on pop culture, rather then the classics. Americans know more about their favorite TV dramas then the drama in DC that directly affects their lives. They care more for their "right" to choke down a McDonalds burger or a BurgerKing burger than for their constitutional rights. Then they turn around and lecture us about our rights and about our "democracy". Pride blind the foolish.
Then their faith in God was destroyed,"
Once I had a gay friend. He complained incessantly about being depressed over being gay. Boring. I dropped this neurotic gay and got a real friend.
Go back in the closet. I'm sick of hearing about it.
Yes i agree with this. I knew he was gay, but when he performs he projects his sexuality out to the audience, so it dosen't matter what sex you are, or the fact that he's gay, you're still going to find him sexy.
Very well put. Race and sexuality. Let it be. If it's supposed to be no big deal then let it be no big deal.
Yes I agree with Glambert#1475. Most of adam's fans knew from the start he was gay and they'll be paying for his CD's and tours irregardless of his sexual orientation. I doubt this issue will cause a problem in his career. I think the problem is that the media has only got this subject to write about until his music is out. He's said everything in his post idol interviews, so there's nothing new to report or create controversy and reaction. Once his music is out then hopefully that will get the discussion back on track…ie talking about his music and what a success he is. I suspect that his performances will be quite outrageous and then there may be the media backlash because of that…..but for Adam it's no bad thing. It keeps the media interest on him either way. It keeps him in the papers, and when it comes to his music then it's all free advertising….there's no such thing as bad publicity don't forget. I'll be first in queue for his music either way, and as long as we all support him with our $ £ yen euros…you name it….then it'll all be fine. Don't forget Madonna has had her fair share of media criticism and it's not done her any harm. x
@Anderson
It should also be noted that one of the most high-profile critics of Lambert's music is Clay Aiken, who is also of the homosexual lifestyle. Naturally, the homosexual mafia tried to crucify Aiken simply because he didn't toe the PC line.
This is insanity at its finest.
Actually, Clay Aiken (also homsexual) doesn't Lambert's music and thus voted for Kris Allen.
Similarly, many people didn't vote for Lambert because they were offended by his musical style, not his sexual preference. To believe otherwise is to say that Jennifer Hudson did win American Idol because of racism.
Well, Entertainment Weekly and the Washington Post really did question why Lambert wasn't more "in your face" with his homosexuality. So, Deborah Weiss's column is spot-on in this regard.
And a wise Latina woman for the Supreme Court. You must be BEYOND excited!
Thank you…..what a great article. I have not had a singer affect me like this in a long time. I find myself listening to his songs from Idol over and over again. I will buy his music and go to his shows. The rest is media hype.
To all who can't appreciate or don't appreciate ADAM's PASSAGGIO talent in vocals, we, ADAM's fans who do recognize this talent, we respect your opinion. Okay??? It is your opinion but it doesn't mean you are right or factual. If you are ignorant or uninformed or uneducated, better keep your mouth shut. Because once you do open up, you definitely and absolutely only confirm it. Why bother???
I'm a big Erasure fan, have been for years. I think Andy Bell is an amazing singer. Having said that, it's a pity that he had to be so flamboyant and 'in your face' about his sexuality. The music dosn't need it, but perhaps he felt compelled to use his celebrity status to push his agenda. I still enjoy his music, although sometimes it does make it more difficult to 'connect' with it when I envision just what may have inspired him to write a specific love ballad, ect.
I hope Adam dosen't cave to media pressure and become just another 'gay icon'…I think it diminishes the music in a way, and can isolate potential fans…let the music inspire each individual who listens to it, without an agenda attached.
Um, the most talented guy in the world who could only get noticed by participating on American Idol; then lost. He has sold no records . . . and yet Queen wants him because the elites have said he is the most talented man in the world. I'm sorry, but I get an "Obama Messiah" feeling from this guy as if saving the music industry or a dead band by mere existence. His accomplishments and talent are more media created than real.
My prediction? He will be forgotten the moment the next American Idol starts. That goes for the AI winner.
For all you Adam fans – Why did you lose so horribly if he was so talented? Oh yes, the masses missed how talented he was because they are so "ignorant or uninformed or uneducated," so they, "better keep your mouth shut." That is very Obama Messiah and Liberal of you all. I am sick of hearing about Adam's talent. He may actually be talented, but right now the only thing I am hearing is another media driven creation selling a burger. It might be one of the best burgers on the planet, but it is still a burger getting forced on the American public. They might like a second rate burger better if for no other reason than at least the individual made the choice.
Wow! Are you unfamiliar with David Bowie and Freddie Mercury? They were also showman – over the top and too the max! Doesn't make what they were doing any less real. Adam is new to on the big scene so of course he hasn't got the status of the greats, but doesn't mean he won't have. He is amazing! Has something really special and unique. Just reserve your judgement until he has had a few albums and gets a chance to put it all out there. Otherwise you start to sound old and narrow minded. Plenty of people hated everyone of the greats when they first started.
Deborah, please, please fix this error in your story.
"Supposedly, Kris Allen’s church pastor urged “all believers” to vote for Kris (though Kris emphatically objected to votes based on religion). "
This was Danny Gokey's pastor, not Kris'. Kris and his church and pastor do not deserve this mistake, in your story, because they have been nothing but supportive of Adam
The rest of your blog is awesome!
Love this article – best one I've seen on Adam. Thank you for having and expressing common sense and an acknowledgement of Adam's contributions to AI, show business, and the public consciousness. Love him.
Sarah Nichole – one thing: it's okay not to like Adam's style, but the very people you mention that are the "real deal" (that are alive, of course) have raved about Adam's talent. People who know music know how amazing Adam's talent is. I am not sure why you felt like you had to put this criticism out there. If you don't like his music, then don't buy it. Geez. I don't go around leaving posts on how much I don't like other musicians; if I don't like them, I ignore them. Please do the same and leave the rest of we Adam fans alone. (Thank you)
Adam is great. Great article
Too funny. If he doesn't make it on your radar screen why are you reading an article about him….??? Adam is compelling as a performer. He isn't trying to save your house, or stop a war – but he is a breath of fresh air and it is so great to see a talent like his take hold. If you don't like him, no one will care. But people with real lives do love Adam – and it is fantastic to see something really awesome happening, in the midst of the other crap of life.
@MS
You're referring to Jesus' statement from the Bible:
"Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you."
-Matthew 7:1-2
However, you must read the above in context of the rest of the passage:
"Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye."
Matthew 7:3-5
(cont.)
So, Jesus (the Son of God) has no problem with a Christian calling Adam Lambert's homosexuality sinful. There are Bibles verses that clearly state this: Romans 1:20-32, 1 Timothy 1:8-10, etc. Jesus' concern is the Christian's motives.
Is a Christian pointing out Adam's sin in order to:
A) Prove he is more "good" than Adam, which is a lie because no person is sinless (read: Romans 3:23)?
B) Give Adam the good news that he (the Christian) was once a slave to sin until he confessed his evil and was saved to eternal life by Christ (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)? Jesus can do the same for Adam. (John 3:16-21)
As Christians, we should always pick Choice "B."
In short, don't confuse judging someone self-righteously with lovingly telling him that he's a sinner in need of a Savior (Jesus Christ).
http://www.sdnn.com/sandiego/2009-05-12/things-to... Great article as Pauline pointed out.
Again – you are the one reading the article and the replies – so you must be talking to yourself… We have a life, we are just excited about a great new talent.
American Idol is for morons.
I agree. Adam is born to sing, entertain and rock the world. Regardless of his sexual orientation he is hot! I hope that people just leave him alone and let him sing! By the way, I am in my 40's and I was a huge Queen fan. To see somebody like Adam come along is super exciting!!! (…this is the second blog I have ever written, all because of Adam. Can't wait to see him perform again!) Kudos to his parents! Thanks to them Adam allowed himself to follow his talents and instincts while staying the charismatic, down to earth guy he really is.

Forgot to mention this in my earlier blog. YES, he did contribute tremendously to the gay community as he established an emotional connection due to his incredible sincerity and wonderful personality.
I love him and his music. I hope he will be a superstar. He performs well and leaves me always wanting to see more of him! I love hearing him in interviews too because he is a really positive person. I can only imagine some of the negative comments he has had to suffer in his life because of his differences. It is the differences that make him so exciting. I wish the best for him and will support him by continuing to buy his music and attending his concerts! I can't wait to see him in the AI show..I'm only going to see him!
He just isn't the world wide "Idol" a lot of people want to represent them. I do not like "flamboyant" in my face. I am sick of "flamboyant" being shoved in my face 24/7. Yes he can sing – he will find jobs. He is not an idol I would want my grandson to aspire to.
I disagree. I can think of several singers whose voices and music I love but who I less than like as people. Likewise, I can think several singers who come across as lovely people but who I wouldn't part with good money to see or listen to.
Music is just another profession. Someone's personality does not affect their ability to do their job.
Adam's sexual preferences will only hold him back with the narrow-minded members of the American public. However, they are a small section, they are practically non-existent among the audience that Adam will be marketed to (one of the reasons why it is better for him, for his management and for his record company that he didn't win) and absolutely irrelevant outside of the US. His sexuality will not hold him back on the international scene,
Pretty cute? I wouldn't say he is pretty cute. Drop dead gorgeous doesn't even do him justice
I couldn't care less whether Kris is married, single, engaged, gay, straight or has an Oedipus complex. I wouldn't vote for him because he is no better than any singer or guitarist you could see busking outside your nearest stations.
"Not to your particular liking" is sort of the point, isn't it?
Talking as though the whole contest is solely about vocal ability or stagemanship misses an important point and that is that it is about "the particular liking" of those who vote. If we were going to bow to the experts why not just have a few of them on a panel to do the judging and tell the rest of us what we're too stupid to understand?
Here we've got people talking about a deficit in Sarah's soul, which frankly is beyond any sort of expectation of civil conduct. It's actually rather vile. And why? Because someone else's subjective opinion doesn't favor Adam's style.
The picture up top is of Adam when he sang "Beth", and while his rendition was technically perfect, it was soulless. The song is heartbreaking. When Adam sang it, there was no heart to break. Too much polish can actually be a negative in a performance. Not everyone wants perfection. Kris isn't the most fabulous singer but he often accompanied himself on the guitar or piano, and people respond to that. That some people didn't respond to Adam and some people did, says nothing except that people like different things.
Also… the Kara Dio song sucks. The fact that Adam nailed every note doesn't suddenly make it a good song. There's some indication that he realized it and was plenty pleased not to have to record the stinker.
Yes, of course…. "respect" is "shut your mouth."
Adam has such classy fans.
Adam Lambert is an excellent entertainer and a very likable human being. His sexual orientation has nothing to do with anything and is none of our business. He was an excellent contestant and showed real class when he lost. To criticize him for not using his sexual identity is ridiculous. That said, he became too over the top and I found him boring. I just got tired of him. It was like "what outrageous thing is he going to do this week?" That said, I think he's perfect for Broadway and think he probably is the only entertainer I've seen who could reprise "The Boy From Oz" which was a wonderful show with Hugh Jackman in the lead but which closed when Jackman left. Give Adam a contract for "The Boy From Oz", take it back to Broadway, then take it on the road.
Constrained by a script, a choreographer and a director, I think this guy could blow theatre away with his performance.
I have 5 beautiful and much-loved grandchildren, ages 12 – 26, who understand completely that having someone for a role model doesn't have anything to do with that person's private life, but everything to do with how they treat the people around them and what degree of integrity that person exhibits for my grandchildren to see.
Adam has a truckload of integrity, as exhibited by his truthfulness with his music and his honesty with his fans and the entertainment industry. He treats the people around him like royalty, as expressed by his family, friends and, surprisingly, by his fellow Idol contestants. Many of them talked about his generosity in helping them choose the perfect song for their performances and giving them all kinds of assistance in staging their performances…helping the competition rather than shutting them out and protecting his own interests. Amazing.
We can talk about this til the end of time.
There is no right or wrong side of the coin.
Some of us love him and some of us don't.
That's all good, all good.
No need to bicker over the guy…just enjoy, or not.
I call Adam the boy who fell magically and mysteriously to Earth…
Here's why…
Each generation has a musician who appears in a cloud of silver sparkle dust and changes the face of the music industry.
Elvis, for example.
The horrendous noise that erupted in the world when he first appeared was ludicrous! Ed Sullivan ordered the cameramen on his Sunday night TV program to show Elvis from the waist up only. God forbid anyone should have seen his whole body movin' to the groovin'. Religious leaders called him all kinds of evil 6 ways from Sunday, yet here was a man who loved his parents and his friends and took exceptionally loving care of the people in his life.
Frank Sinatra, same reaction, different generation.
Remember the hoo-rah over the Beatles? Another generation, another star-is-born-syndrome.
I believe that Adam will grow into the same kind of superstar, given his extraordinary talent, his multi-octave vocal chops and his pure entertainment factor. Seeing one of his performances on Idol was like a mini-concert for me. Other contestants came onstage, mostly in casual clothes, sang their song, had their dialogue with the judges and left the stage.
Adam performed!
That's the difference for me.
If I were at a concert with all of these contestants onstage, I'd be delighted to get more than my money's worth with Adam's performances, whereas the others were basically a walk-on, walk-off performance.
Thanks for a well-written and thoughful article…good discussion generated and that's what it's all about, isn't it?
Adam isn't perfect. There are areas in which he could improve and ought to improve. When this was all coming down I mentioned it to my daughter and tried to describe Adam and she finally said, "Oh, him. He's so uncomfortable and stiff." Before his fans shriek that "He is not!" it might be wise to take a deep breath and consider… it doesn't *matter* if it's true or not, if that's the main first impression some teenager has of him and his performance. LOTS of people can sing. Some better than others. (BTW, the daughter in question is definitely hard-rock and piercings rather than Pop… so she ought to like Adam best.)
For me, his vocal ability was actually a distraction. When listening to a song a person should be responding to the song, not sighing over the singer's talent. If I'm going "wow, listen to his voice" I'm not going "what an awesome song." Being mad at me about that isn't going to give Adam a long-time career… it's the *songs* we remember, not the talent.
An example is "Beth" which Adam sang when he wore that outfit in the picture. That song tears up any young girl's heart… oh, so much angst! When Adam sang it, did he create a reality where he was separated from someone he loved? Did anyone *believe* that he was in a band that "couldn't find the sound"? Or was everyone going, "Wow, what a perfect voice, what technical perfection?"
I'd love for Adam to succeed. I know he'll never see my advice to him, but I hope he hears it from someone. If all he ever hears is that he's perfect he'll be the same flash in the pan as others have been.
I wished the conservative movement got back to its roots and core message that always sells……the individual and individual liberty.
Conservative is another word for "classical liberalism", we are at our best when we stick to this message, now we just need a leader.

[...] The Best Article written about Adam in the last two weeks. This gal sums things up quite beautifully IMHO. [...]
THANK YOU, Ms. Weis, for what is surely the best article on this issue I have read. As appalled as I've been by the religious fundamentalists who scorn Adam, I am equally appalled by the so-called "media" who feel its sole responsibility is to attempt to define this talented man with a standard which no "straight" performer is forced to live by. Adam doesn't need to confirm or deny his life, he is too busy LIVING his life — with honesty, grace and an enviable comfort with who he is. If only the feeding frenzy would just stand still for a moment and notice.
totally disagree. think aiken was very clearly threatened by the counterpoint adam provided to his closeted (even to himself?) persona on AI. i think adam's authenticity and comfort with himself/his sexuality disturbed him. i would venture to say aiken is still not comfortable with his homosexuality. — he responded so strongly/confidently about a man/music he had heard only once! — and r we to believe that ONE song just happened to be ring of fire? (i don't believe that, it's pretty unlikely that's all he heard — but it is the easiest to criticize being the least mainstream of his interpretations — and perhaps the most overtly sexual). i lost a lot of respect for clay over his comments, thought they were fairly transparent in displaying issues of his own. — as a singer he should easily have recognized adam's vocal talents, even if he did not like his style.
i think you need to remember the context here. american idol, 2-3 min to sell yourself and a song whose theme — or even the song itself — has been picked for u? of course adam isn't perfect (how is that a starting point for criticism, btw?). but stiff — absolutely not. one of the most fluid performers one could imagine in that highly contrived setting — making it all seem so effortless. . . as for beth, i thought the beautiful tone in his voice took the song to a whole nother level (have u heard the kiss version?); i found it so poignant — but of course, the outfit and glittered eyes distracted — but he was about to perform with kiss for heaven's sake! personally, i think they should permit him to release a single of beth in its entirety — and then we could just listen, without the distraction. i wonder what u and your daughter would think of it.
Have I *heard* the KISS version?
I'm guessing I'm a bit older than you expect.
Wow,I think nothing can stop my love for him at the moment.I'm from China, and I hope you know that here millions of people go crazy for Adam,he is a perfect combination of 'cute' and 'sexy'.I love his smile, his voice, his confidence, his ambition and so on.No matter what he looks, what he likes, his voice is my forever god.
Forgotten? Don't think so. Even the irascible Cowell – ". . .brilliant young man. He is unique and unforgettable and a certain star of tomorrow." Think Simon knows more about talent than you do.
Gee, I guess you have never heard Adam sing, Jettboy. Why don't you go to YouTube and listen/watch one of his performances ? I suggest searching on "adam lambert brigadoon" for a start on substantiating the incredible quality of his voice. You might also like the performance that will come up if you search on "adam lambert the prayer". Adam will be a singing superstar for the 21st century. He's a gift from God, not a "media creation". Enjoy!
