Obama’s ‘New Tone’: A Victory of Astounding Trivia
by Doug TenNapelSo much was said of Obama during the election, and for all of the promises of healing America’s divide, reaching across the aisle with a new kind of politics, creating new jobs and improving on “the failed policies of the last 8 years” I don’t see anything getting better.
The shame for Bush’s whatever-he-did-every-day was palpable by the left. Ask your favorite lefty what Bush did right and they’ll likely only talk about his help with the Africa AIDS epidemic, and even then it was probably just to look good to all of those voters who are Africans with AIDS. They were ashamed of his Texas-ness, his swagger and for the first time we declared that “go-it-alone” wasn’t an American quality. Somehow, Kim Jong-il would be better under Obama. We would talk together, and he would listen. But Kim Jong-Ronery has upped his missile launches since Bush left office.
I’m still trying to figure out how Obama will blame Bush for the eventual missile attack on South Korea. The problem will not start with the Clinton administration, because we already learned from the college professors that bad things happened between 1980 and 1992, then nothing bad happened for 8 years. Then every evil in the world resumed between 2000 and 2008. I know we’re still not supposed to criticize the White House until the world’s longest 100 day honeymoon ends in 2012.
Given Obama’s failures, why does the left still feel a resounding victory just with Obama showing up? Because it was never about policies, given Obama’s speech to the Muslim world was so similar to Bush’s hand wringing that one wonders if they had the same speech-writer. We’re told that just Obama’s tone, his presence, his smooth leadership style is what makes the sale. But nothing is better with this president. Is this why he ran on Hope because that’s all I’m gonna get for four years?
I’m not impressed with his tone. I’d take great policies with horrible tone at this point. He reminds me of the Mommy-in-Chief promising to coddle every wound…real or perceived. He reaches out to apologize to Muslim countries I wasn’t aware we had sinned against. If anything, those governments should apologize to us for not being as great as America. Every country should apologize to their citizens for not being as great as this country.
The Bush/Cheney policy was classic hawkism–that it’s better to be feared than loved. But who fears President Obama? All he needs is a powdered wig to go along with the beauty mark. Sure, he had the balls to shoot a teenage Somali pirate in the face but does he have steel will where we really need it, to take out the Kim Jong-Il family in the middle of the night? What regime in the world today is evil enough for him to change it? Tehran? Darfur?
Elites get real tough on enemies that don’t actually look you in the eye. They can talk real tough against big bad climate change because he won’t speak against them and blow up their embassies. President Obama took no time in his address to the Muslim world (Really? To every Muslim in the world? Will you ever address the Christian world?) to directly oppose Ahmadinejad. This is the new tone we’re all so excited about. Cowardice. Nuance. In the end I think the left just didn’t like a cowboy in the White House…just like the last one they hated.
Bin Laden has released another tape, Russia expands influence both in China and Europe all of whom lick their lips that a Chicago lawyer who loves being photographed in a swimsuit Jesus’d his way into the most powerful leadership position in the world. Fine we have a new tone. That’s a victory of astounding trivia.

Great post Doug.
It's sick that libs are basically ascribing nobility to everything he does now. Did you know it's bold to apologize for progress made by great men who came before you?
Excellent summary of the last 100 or so days.
as for us, we had no luck getting a lefty to even admit that he was loved in SubSaharan Africa; when you would point out all the aid he'd delivered they would look away and change the subject… BDS was easily the worst, most complete political mental disorder we've ever seen.
But his administration was competent. And we were safe, and until just very recently quite propserous. Mr Obama, on the other hand, has nowhere to go but down, given the political and economic realities of the current time. One suspects his negative chorus, while nascent, is continuing an exponential growth…
With Obama doing "nuanced" versions of much of what Bush did, I'm often more taken by what he doesn't say. I'm still waiting for Obama to make a full public announcement denouncing the religious-zealotry motivated murder of a young soldier by a home-grown Muslim terrorist. I'm guessing that Bush would have made a similar speech to Obama's about the murder of the partial-birth abortion doctor, but he would never have left the murder of an American soldier at a recruiting station on American soil go unlamented. And though he would probably would have been consistently reluctant to point out the religious affiliation of the murderer, he would not have squelched the whole affair in order to avoid offending the religion he intended to praise highly just a couple of days later. As the question goes: Where's the outrage?
Or, to put it in BushSpeak: Obama is all hat and no cattle
Hrmm, actually I don't think that either of Obama's balls had anything to do with the Somali pirate getting shot… Good post man.
Doug – well said. I think, as conservatives, we realize by now how the left operates, and more to the point, how the media props them up. While it can be disheartening that true objective journalism has died, we just have to get over it, and as Andrew Breitbart recently posted, get equally serious. I'm not sure the so-called "mainstream media" actually exists anymore. I sure don't watch network news anymore, and I only read my local paper (Knoxville News Sentinel) for coverage of the Vols. It is important for you and others to keep up the pressure on Obama and all of us to be vocal, whether it is tea parties or whatever. I do think it will help if we can get national political leaders to get and remain extremely vocal in our criticism as to what is going on. This is potentially the worst administration in the history of our country. NO MORE REMAINING QUIET ABOUT IT!
You're being too critical of the great One. He hasn't been in office too long and you're always on him. They use the same argument about Marxism. It just hasn't been done right. Obama's trying to fix that.
Often I would ask my many liberal friends why they hated Bush so much. In many ways, he was a very socialist president willing to spend money to combat all kinds of evils, both real and imagined…just like standard liberals. So why the mind-blowing hatred? The only conclusion at which I could arrive was that they simply hated the way he talked. They didn't like his personality, his persona. That's it. With Obama, they have a leader that makes them feel good. Liberals do not appreciate logic and reason. They are right-brained people who live life using their feelings, their emotions. Obama can lead us all down to hell, but as long as he does it with style 45 % of the electorate will feel good about every fiery step.
The outrage has been stripped, desensitized, vanquished to the realm of the apathetic. I might go on about the promise of psychoanalysis at one time, but that too has been stripped, desensitized and vanquished in favor of psychopharmacology, one example of many, which sterilizes both good and bad reaction. 1/4 of a million people were washed away 4 years ago by a tsunami, that's 250 D-Days, 2500 Iraq wars or 125 years of DUI fatalities in the U.S. Where indeed is not only the outrage, but any kind of contemplation whatsoever on the part of our population and media that is unattached to some vaporously percieved political gain?
Listen to the way he talks, and you will understand why Obama is the world president – that's why he seems so un-american. When he says "we", he means all of us, not just americans.
Yeah. Still waiting on that…
not a socialist, but a 'big government conservative' would be more appropriate. He was a conservative fellow, more so than his dad, but not a Reagan-like 'movement conservative'… it was his born again Christianity that made his foes nuts. His self assuredness came from that, and liberals being mostly godless heathens, were terribly threatened because of it.
The Texas 'twang' didn't help much, and the mild dyslexia sealed it…
Hey, yeah, and Barry,
Take Your Feet off The Desk!
We will expect an original birth certificate to H.R. at end of business day on Friday.
When is the US going to realize that the light at the end of the tunnel is not salvation by Obama, but an on-rushing freight train? The libs are frenetically swaying to the vibrations with their arms wrapped around each other, exclaiming on the "really cool whistling noise" in the tunnel. The rest of us are grimly aware that a huge wreck is about to take place, and are doing what we can to minimize the impact.
To answer your question, *I* fear President Obama. Coupled with high office and a chorus of sycophants, megalomania is something to be very frightened of indeed.
Take a good look at Michelle, now think of the tried and true redneck bumpersticker, "If Mama Ain't Happy, Nobody's Happy !". Can you, for a minute, imagine her as a "Happy American". She admitted that she wasn't proud of her country until they decided to like her husband. Now she's swanning around London dressed like a party gift and letting the press know that her tenis shoes cost $600. Is this an outreach to the poor or a slap at the middle class ? I need someone to tell me what has happened here. There's no feminism in Islam and she's agreeably mum about the hijab, the burqa, and the stonings. I am confused because we know who is in charge in a matriarchal culture.
That's some nice writing, Doug.
Wanted to keep reading and reading and then you stopped.
Ask your favorite lefty what Bush did right and they’ll likely only talk about his help with the Africa AIDS epidemic, and even then it was probably just to look good to all of those voters who are Africans with AIDS—-
Wrong. They fulminate, their heads spin faster than Linda Blair's and they instantly come down with a serious case of Tourette's. Even the moderate liberals I know, the ones that still have a modicum of brain cells remaining, effuse an aura of barely concealed hatred.
Great article! Excellent follow up posts. BH rocks!
1. "Sure, he had the balls to shoot a teenage Somali pirate in the face…"
Like another poster, I'm not sure about this either. I suspect what really happened was that he gave the order to shoot to kill ONLY if the captain's life was threatened and the SEALS took it from there. Since the American voters approved so completely of rescuing our captain, Obama couldn't very well say he didn't mean for them to kill the pirates. The question is – with the next pirate capture will he withhold the order to shoot? I'm betting he will.
2. "The shame for Bush’s whatever-he-did-every-day was palpable by the left. Ask your favorite lefty what Bush did right and they’ll likely only talk about his help with the Africa AIDS epidemic, and even then it was probably just to look good to all of those voters who are Africans with AIDS."
That's because Bono told them to support Bush in this. They're not called "useful idiots" for nothing.
3. "I'm still waiting for Obama to make a full public announcement denouncing the religious-zealotry motivated murder of a young soldier by a home-grown Muslim terrorist."
Lawhawke — I hope you're not holding your breath. Most of the time the politicians respond to the propaganda media's harping on a particular subject (like landing on an carrier in a flight suit sent them around the bend). The propaganda media wasn't particularly concerned about a terrorist shooting a warmongering American, so the story died. The wonder is that our brave soldiers and sailors take this abuse without retaliating. Proves just how great they are. Less stable individuals would have blown up the NY Times building or NBC or CBS a long time ago. Isn't it interesting how high the dudgeon our propaganda median goes at "detainee abuse" when sawing off Daniel Pearl's head on video doesn't bother them at all.
Obama is an empty suit, an attractive mannequin who reads (a teleprompter) well. He is woefully inexperienced for this (or any) executive position. Truth is, Michelle Obama probably would have been a better candidate given that she at least has worked at something other than rabble rousing and/or holding elected office in a state where to be elected you only have to be in the right party and know the right people.
For the past four hundred + years, one or the other Western nation has dominated certain centuries: Portugal (16th), Spain (17th), Dutch (18th), England (19th) and 20th (America). Now it's China's turn (21st) unless the Islamics succeed and take the world back to the 8th. I suspect what happens is that a dominant nation becomes so prosperous, it forgets what made it dominant. In an effort to be all things to all its people, it gets soft, overtaxes (as Obama is going to do) and drives capital offshore (as is happening now)
doood…….that's not what he was elected to. Only an extreme narcissist with delusions of the ultimate egotistical grandeur would consider himself or herself as such. You should extract clues from that.
Minus one for utopian delusion.
yup…any day now…
We are the world, we are the children …………
The ROE (rules of engagement for civies) on the pirate issue were to NOT shoot unless there were an IMMEDIATE threat to the captain. The team leader made a judgement call independant of CinC. Any doubt of this occupant's attitude toward the military can be found in the contrasting statements of Tiller and PVT Long as well as the time it took. We are entering a time where two hundred years of American exceptionalism are being flushed away for slick promises that someone else will have to pay for and NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE!
SUA SPONTE
RIP GM & CHRYSLER
Ok. I am, somewhat, of an educated simpleton. I was city born and am a rural resident by choice. I was a member of the military of these United States. Why should I be outraged at a tsunami? Was that tsunami my fault? Was it Bush's fault? Some connection to Gorebull warming? Crop circles? Was Elvis there? Being outraged at a periodically occuring tectonic event is, well, very liberal. The U.S. response, to that event, led the world. Perhaps, I missed the thrust of your point.
dcase: I used the term socialist because GWB often looked to government to solve social programs. No Child Left Behind is a perfect example. I agree he isn't your classical, hard-line socialist, unlike the current adminstration, but as a 'big government conservative' I was amazed how much hatred he received from the left. Was he simply not spending our children's money fast enough for these people?
I will give you a valid point on his religious beliefs. My friends would never admit as much, but, like you, I assume that his religious views had something to do with it.
heh heh…..that's good! I need to remember that one.
I'm still trying to figure out how we made it this far without his benevolent community organizerness.
Thanks, old soldier —
You said what I meant to say.
"We are entering a time where two hundred years of American exceptionalism are being flushed away for slick promises that someone else will have to pay for and NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE!"
We care; it's just that like Rip Van Winkle, we went to sleep for thirty years. During that time the Lefties took over the bureaucracy, media (propaganda) and education (brainwashing). Our only hope lies in the Blue Dog Democrats; that they'll see that the Occupant in the White House is going to strangle the goose that lays the golden egg and vote with reasonable Republicans (are there any) to keep him from doing the most harm in the least amount of time.
I don't get it. Two murders on the same day, one highly publicized, the other clearly ignored. And that has what to do with tsunamis, Iraq wars and DUIs?
Must be the chronic talking.
Listen to the way the rest of 'we' – that being the rest of the world – talk. And you'll understand that there is no 'we'.
Weren't your type the very ones telling us for 8 years that "they don't hate our freedom, they hate what we do to them! The chickens have come home to roost!"
Now explain to me how a Chicago politician preening himself on stage becomes the 'world president'. Explain to me how he can continue the exact same policies but put a smiley face on them, and those sage, suffering, innocent people around the world whom we victimize by merely existing suddenly fall in line, buy a McRib, and chomp.
You can't have it both ways.
What you mean to say is Obama _wants_ to be 'world president', which certainly is in line with his ghastly and terrifying ambition and inflated sense of self-worth. The funny thing is, no matter how much you delude yourself, the world does not love him. The world, largely, hates him. Reagan drew larger crowds in his goodwill tours, and I don't recall various allied heads of state making fun of Reagan. And you know why the world loved Reagan? Because he was staunchly and proudly American. People respect those who know and love who they are.
it was the trifecta- conservative, Texan, mangler of the King's English… add born again and you have the formula for BDS…
I also feel the need to comment on the Somali pirate thing – Obama did not stand up to anybody. The reason it dragged on for days was because he didn't know what to do. The military _always_ has local-theater ability to take command if American lives are threatened (and even when they don't, local commanders will frequently do so out of conscience and suffer any consequences).
What happened was the military saw the chance, took it, and Obama took credit. The press was more than willing to give it to him, starting the idiotic meme that Obama's indecisiveness is "a sign of strong character – he deliberates thoroughly, thinks things through before acting". In reality, the best description of this President's MO is to do nothing until the situation takes care of itself, and let everyone give him credit – look at the economy.
I feel, overlooked about Bush, is that there were no scandals during his eight years. The Plame/Libby affair was the closest thing and really LIbby was exonerated when it became that Fitzgerald knew Armitrage was the culprit in the first week of his investigation. I don't think another Prez in my life has done eight years with some kind of big scandal. Katrina/Enron et al. were Liberal propagandas, but no realy clear unethical behavior surfaced.
But think of vitriol and intensity of hatred that Sarah Palin suffers. Why? She's certainly not been around that long, or done anything that would cause a rational person to attack her and hate her at the level she has received.
There is a school of thought that radical 'liberalism' is really a psychosis.
As Rush has stated several times about W., He's conservative. He's just not a leader of a movement.
Actually I was hoping W. would seize control and be President for Life. (just to piss off lefties)
I still strain to hear snippets of him on the radio.
Maybe times have changed, but when Clinton was president I didn't change the station every time I heard or saw him like I do with this community organizing assclown.
that's because we had a rare- and we do mean rare- honest government for eight years. Which is why the leftist admonition that 'Bush lied, kids died' was antithetical to the truth… maybe not the best Presidency ever, but a good, solid, workmanlike performance.
What one would expect from a Bush…
I think the President's stance on the pirate thing is to figuratively stand one pace away. If it goes well, he can step toward it and take credit. If it goes poorly, he steps away and tossed the local commander to the press. He has proven quite willing, ready and able to toss old friends under the bus. (Rizko, Wright, Ayers)
The same way Chicago has, poorly.
obama is going to go down in history as the president who sent capitalism out the window.
"Fox News Host Gretchen Carlson: Government Unfairly Shutdown Parents' GM Dealership"
Read this article and watch the video. I had to go a ways to find it since it's not on any of the MSM outlets.

Don't forget granny..
Hey what's wrong with Chicago?
If you over-look the murders, the rapes, the muggings, the rampant gun violence in a "Gun Free Zone", the assinine tax's, the tax on "Bottled Water", $11 packs of cigarettes, no parking anywhere, the homeless, the crackheads and the stench coming from the "fart sniffing, obama fawning, uber liberals it's a nice place………………
Ah…Screw that! This place sucks!
Forget I was here………………..
I know what you mean, I was born there and now I live in Little Chicago.
…I fear President Obama.
Actually, I just fear his policies. And his rabid fans. But Barack himself? Total pansy.
Well, except that the "hat" is actually a beret.
Perhaps he views the presidency as merely a stepping stone to his dream job as Secretary General of the UN. Of course, he could make that future job easier – and much more powerful – if he could take the US down a few notches now…
Hmmmmmmm…..
The key word you used about Reagan was "respect." The rest of the world knew better than to rile that man up. Muamar Qadaffi learned that lesson very well, and it shut him up for the next 20 years.
Obama is earning (for lack of a better word) the drooling, fawning praise of much of the Liberal masses, but he is seriously lacking respect from the ones who count in this day and age.
"Sure, he had the balls to shoot a teenage Somali pirate in the face …"
Not really. That was a standing order, not something Obama decided to do. The Navy Seals, God bless 'em, saw their opportunity and took their shot.
By the way, does anyone really believe the hostage was at 'imminent danger' of being killed? They had one hostage, were being towed behind a U.S. Navy destroyer in a freaking lifeboat, and one of the four "pirates" was on board the Navy ship at the time. They were fixing to spontaneously kill their one hostage? I doubt it.
Obama had nothing to do with any of that.
Bush is a social conservative; not a political conservative.
That is, he is conservative in terms of values and the way he lives his private life.
Politically, he would have been considered a moderate Democrat forty years ago when they still had such things.
"World President"?
Are you trying to be funny?
"Take a good look at Michelle…"
I can't…her transformational beauty is too overpowering.
The thrust of my point is that the left are desensitized to "everything" (good and bad since neither exists in their world) in whatever form it arrives unless it is politically charged and or media-hyped. No, of course you should not be outraged by 1/4 of a million people dying in a tsunami. What you might be outraged about is that your lib neighbor who is busy spouting off about some dead baby murderer doesn't even remember one.. My thrust was aimed at scale, proportion and relevence in a world where your entire state could be wiped off the map (say by a terrorist nuke or 5) and the average lib across the street would forget all about it within a couple of days or weeks or years.. They've been pretending WTC never happened since almost day one so why would anyone be surprised that an American soldier killed at a recuiting station (my brother was a recruiter among other things and retired 1st sgt. USMC after 25 years) would garner any attention from the left?
I can't listen to him talk. Everytime I start to, I feel the urge to vomit.
If the SEALS had had to wait for O to give the kill order, the Captain of that cargo ship would STILL be on that rescue boat with somebody sending out for pizzas and Pepsi.
Thanks for your service, by the way.
Excellent, Mr. TenNapel. ("big bad climate change" — love it!)
Neat observation, "a victory of astounding trivia." I'm guessing that if Mr Obama doesn't ruin the country with his ill-advised policies and programs and incompetent appointments, his entire presidency will be described as trivial. He has made 'tone of voice' and 'tone of message' his defining characteristic. If the press wasn't managing his image, carrying his water, and making him look 'popular' to the world, his accomplishments (other than speechifying) would be unsubstantial. He is truly the media's president.
"Our only hope lies in the Blue Dog Democrats"
We're f_cked.
"They were ashamed of his Texas-ness"
If you leave out that he was Connecticut born, then yes.
And an idiot as well.
All of which reminds me …. Clinton had one kid, a daughter. Bush, two daughters. Obama, two daughters. What the hell is going on? Is it something in the water?
I heard the standoff lasted a couple days, during which the standing order was to resolve the situation peacefully, then the Navy ship's captain got fed up and let the Seals take their shots. So really, Obama deserves no credit for the sniper shots and rescue.
What, neither the one named Rahm nor the other named Michelle?
Awesome! Doug hits it out of the park on this.
We have a bit more hope than that.
To finance their great dreams the liberals need lots of investors to pick up US debt, and they are balking. They have already had to jack up the offered interest rates quite a bit higher than planned to get takers, bond traders are very worried about inflation harming the value of the payout. It has already gotten to the point where mortgage rates are rising to squelch whatever little bit of housing market recovery there was, and it is expected to get worse. Since housing was cited as where any overall recovery would have to originate from, things are looking really doubtful, and even more stimulus spending will just make things work.
The way things are going they will have two choices, either give up all the extra spending and the social programs that spawn it, or charge ahead and make the hole ten times deeper than planned. However there are more than enough capitalists in this world who are heavily invested in the US to let the second one ever really happen.
We should concentrate on the power grab aspects, the financial matters are already mostly regulating themselves away.
Yup, there were a lot of idiots who complained about Bush, and not just because of his adopted home state. Heck, if I had found myself as a conservative born in Connecticut I would move as well.
Good points.
Uhbama is NOT the greatest, cleanest, Black speaker in the Universe. Even with the teleprompter with words written by an unknown author and the tennis match of the Dumbo ears, the Uhhhs ruin the rambling, boring speeches. Uhbama is half-Black and half-White or Mixed Race. Affirmative Action has produced its worst President of 57 states.
I think he's campaigning for Antichrist (AKA leader of the world), not realizing that the position is "wired." He probably should have cracked a Bible a few more times to get the whole picture.
Good read Doug, don’t hold your breath waiting for Barry to grow a set, impossible.
It is great to see you posting again, Doug! It had been far too long!
Healing our global image = spitting on American values.
At least the way Obama does it.
Edward Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" is a prophetic reminder of the direction of history.
I think we have a great society going… Unfortunately it seems cannibals are eating it from the inside out.
Great Post~
No thanks are needed but are appreciated
"The problem will not start with the Clinton administration, because we already learned from the college professors that bad things happened between 1980 and 1992, then nothing bad happened for 8 years. Then every evil in the world resumed between 2000 and 2008."
Right, like homelessness? Does everyone remember how during the Reagan years, then the 4 years of George H.W. Bush, we were constantly being told that America had hundreds of thousands of homeless–the numbers changed constantly–and all of us were a paycheck away from joining them in the soup lines. Then Bill Clinton was elected, and voila! No more homeless! No more stories on t.v. or in print media, which led me to believe that all the homeless either got houses on election day or left the country. Then George W. Bush was elected, and they were all back. The stories about them returned to our regularly scheduled viewing. Either the homeless returned from being away or they were all thrown out of their houses on election day.
Anyone notice they're all gone again?
1 point Thorien
Woo hoo!
Take it from a woman who doesn't think Barack is a god – he's not that attractive.
Although I do think his ears are cute!
President Obama has the same capacity as any news reader from any news station: This does not involve talent. Furthermore, President Obama possesses no true charisma; this too is an illusion created by the media. When he reads his speech–moving his head left & right like a tennis match–he comes off as cold, detached, & bored. His hope & change is really despair & radicalism. Eventually, Obama will be exposed for the fraud he is; this illusion cannot last. The false face will shatter & the truth will out. The United States is being battered & bruised by this man & his War on Capitalism.
History will not be kind to President Obama. Obama will make Jimmy Carter's persona non grata stance within the Democratic Party look like nothing. The other Democrats will be damaged by Obama as well & they might not get re-elected.
Doug, you're a really clever artist – one of my faves (Klayman lives!) – but this chest-thumping bravado is really weird and kinda awkward. There's not a single assertion you made that has any kind of real analysis behind it.
What's the deal with conservatives and fear? Y'all are sounding freaked out of your gourds – scared of Bin Laden, scared of Michelle Obama and "matriarchal culture", scared of putting Guantanamo inmates in American prisons that could hold the Hulk, scared of little ol' North Korea's ill-timed saber-rattling that is mostly related to their internal politics making them _less_ popular with (wait for it) China and Russia, the very countries they rely on for arms, etc. etc.
Lord love ya – if you were attending the Sermon on the Mount, you'd be all up in Jesus' grille for him for him including stuff about turning the other cheek and hanging with the Roman occupation and saying things like "blessed are the merciful" as being a pansy-assed liberal peacenik.
Keep on ragin' and circling the wagons and wetting the bed. It's kinda fun to watch you drive that anxiety parade you call "conservatism" (Goldwater is rolling over in his grave) top speed down that ol' highway to complete political irrelevance. With all that fear noise more and more out of the way, we're finally starting to hear ourselves think again and talk about something useful for a change.
