Starlet Says Winning The War ‘Doesn’t Matter’
by Don SurberThe Associated Press quoted the starlet as saying: “I hope that the war resolves. Whether we win or lose or whatever, it doesn’t matter.”
I am not knocking her. She’s 16. I don’t expect her to politically aware. And although she’s a TV star, as a newspaperman I believe her quote comes in response to a question — so she is not speaking out. Not yet. That comes later after a few awards.
The starlet is Demi Lovato, who is the star of a new Disney Channel show, “Sonny with a Chance.” The premise of the show, according to IMDB, is “Sonny, a talented Midwestern girl, has won a nationwide talent search to move to Los Angeles and star in a popular television series. Sonny’s home and work life is documented along with her adjustment to life in the spotlight.”
Art is imitating life, isn’t it? She is adjusting to life in the spotlight, just as her character will.
It seems to me like she has the Hollywood view of politics down pat. It is how you make it in Hollywood (or Universal City, Calif., where Disney’s shows are made). The old studios used to teach starlets how to walk and talk and eat.
All the trades have certain ropes that a newcomer must learn. In “Bull Durham,” catcher Crash Davis teaches pitcher Nuke LaLoosh what to tell reporters after the game. He learned:
“We gotta play ‘em one day at a time. I’m just happy to be here. Hope I can help the ball club. I just want to give it my best shot, and the good Lord willing, things will work out. A good friend of mine used to say, ‘This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.’ Think about that for a while.”
Lovato must be a bright girl. She knows that when it comes to politics, she must be as vapid as possible in order to fit into Hollywood (Universal City). When it comes to the war, you root for Che and other terrorists, and you demand pacifism from the United States and its allies.
I am assuming a reporter asked her about politics for a story about her and other Disney stars appearing at the inauguration. That makes sense.
And her answer was perfectly Hollywood: “Well, our economic system is in a crisis right now. I definitely hope that that will change. Also… I hope that the war resolves. Whether we win or lose or whatever, it doesn’t matter. I hope that it just ends. So you know, I think that Barack Obama will be able to help us.”
Win or lose or whatever?
It is a blood-curdling quote. The quote insults the sacrifices made by 600,000 American men and women (and millions more of their family members) in moving Iraq from a sponsor of terrorism in Iraq to a budding democracy.
That quote is so terrible John Kerry could have said it. (“You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”)
But I don’t blame Miss Lovato. She is new. She is trying to fit in. She just parroted the attitude in Hollywood (Universal City) about the American side in a war: Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.
“Nuke” Lovato is just happy to be there and she hopes she can help the Disney Channel. Sounds like she will.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't lose any sleep about Lavato's comment. Knowing teenager speak, use of the word "whatever" could have a lot of meanings, so she might not have meant she didn't care if we won or lost. Most likely she meant no matter what, she hoped people would stop dying, which is a nice sentiment, if not completely vapid.
Someone should explain to her about how many Iraqi's were tortured and killed by Saddam Hussein (or about the Munich killings, Beslan, or Mumbai). She probably believes that radical Islamic militants only kill because they feel threatened by us, so if we stop, they'd stop. Like I said, vapid, but not necessarily egregious.
It’s not whether your win or lose, it’s how your body fits into the woodchipper.
As you correctly point out, she’s young and she’s memorized her cliches. What’s the excuse for the rest of the entertainment industry?
Fear and Ignorance.
I read this, got up from my computer, walked out of my office into the livingroom and asked my 15 year old very typical teenage daughter “How you feel about the war in Iraq?” Her response… “if we don’t finish it and win completely our country is going to look weak.” So yes I do hold Miss Lovato responsible for her statement. At 16 she is on the verge of adulthood and needs to be more informed. As a rising name in Hollywood she can and should lead the way in the next generation of Hollywood becoming informed.
Note, thoug,h that she essentially says she wouldn’t be upset if we won in Iraq.
Around Hollywood types, it takes guts to say that.
Get over yourself, Surber. What they’re doing over there now is trying to mop up just one of many Bush’s idiotic and fruitless decisions. You know, the one where he lied the country in to a bloody and useless debacle.
She didn’t say ‘their service doesn’t matter’. But, as a professional twerp, you’re trying to imply that she did. That’s what you are, Surber:
A twerp. The kind that attacks children in print.
You know, for a guy that’s a douche-bag (you know, someone who’s whole purpose in life is to make Bush smell good), and a member a party of ‘personal responsibility’ it would be refreshing if you ever took any.

First, please spell my name correctly. It is a respect issue with me.
I did not make that statement, my 15 yr old daughter did.
It’s very simple though… the war in Iraq is won. We are now in a support role to this new nation and giving them the support to continue on a positive path. In the simplest of terms. As long as they know we have their back they will continue to grow without fear of being forced to fall under another inhuman dictator who makes people live in complete fear. It was change and hope.. you know those things the lefies love to spout about.. Only we made REAL change and gave the people of Iraq REAL hope. Not just slogans.
Throw another Hollywood nitwit onto the woodpile…yawn….
BTW…is it me? Or does she have a man hand?
Andrew Price
ROFL I like you more and more every time I read your responses.
I’m guessing that since this is a relatively new blog, the lefties have assigned their level 0 rookie trolls to it. sheesh.
Titov, you idiot: Che the murderer is a massive Left culture hero, not a massive “pop” culture hero.
Young and dumb…she has a bright future in Hollywood!
Oh, great. As if kids aren’t aren’t brainwashed enough by Hollywood and our culture, now we’ve got one their age to make them complacent about this war that we’re in and think of it as unimportant – instead of the battle for our very survival that it really is. These are the kinds of people we are raising in our country today.
Sometimes I just want to give up. But I just can’t.
Andrew Price
Me either but I am especially bored this evening. They make it so so easy too. *grins*
I was 16 in 1973. I was very aware of the Vietnam war, hard not to be. And I was very aware that it was important to win the Vietnam war. And thanks to our Congress we lost. Thousands of Vietnamese died trying to escape the Communist take over (the”boat people”), and thousands more died in the “re-education” camps. To say nothing of the 58,000 Americans who died. Ms. Lovato should be ashamed.
Another reason to never watch the Disney Channel. Ever.
“Don’t blame Lovato?” Excuse me? Since when does being sixteen exempt you from having a brain or being aware of what is going on in the world around you? Even Britney Spears knew the score years ago and commented we just need to let our troops do their job. Lovato comes across as ignorant, perhaps deliberately so, as you stated that she was deliberately “vapid”. Well, any of us that have hung around Hollywood long enough know that to get work (unless your talent is transcendental, since Bruce Willis seems to be able to do just fine, thanks) you need to “echo” the party line.
She may be an actress, and maybe she’s home schooled. I suggest a new tutor and a better curriculum, in that case. Walt Disney would turn in his cryogenic storage container if he knew of this. Sorry, Demi, but you don’t get a pass here; you are OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER.
She’s a young girl. That’s ground zero for hard left lunacy. Be glad she’s not calling for the US to be overthrown by Jihad.
Sorry to say, young women and girls are hard-left as a matter of social rule. Breaking against that would be like not wearing makeup. Let alone Hollywood.
The disturbing part of this is excusing her because she’s 16. I was studying political science and history at this time in school so why is she excused today? Has our education system stopped teaching these subjects? I suppose so. Perhaps she should use her “skills” to entertain troops for a real life lesson. Does she have parents…real parents?
Andrew,
Just checked back in to see how badly losers flail. And that’s you and your party, bud.
You didn’t just lose, you lost epically. You lost the House, and the Senate, and the Rose Garden. In one fell swoop. You lost so badly we just put a Black Guy in the White House. And, we all know you guys were against that. Nice coded rhetoric you subscribe to.
“Fiscal Conservative”….we don’t want our tax money to go to “those people”. That’s your legacy: Ignominy, racism, stubbornness and pride in your stupidity. I don’t need to talk about ‘history’, because the GOP are a giant bunch of f&*(kups right here in the present.
You…are almost writing as if you think you have some kind of credibility left with this country.
Newsflash: The United States is in the worst shape, ever. And you and your bankrupt philosophy are what got us here.
Enjoy your time in the desert.
And…you all seem to be pretty well studied on how rabid conservatives have smeared Liberals. Not any actual facts about Liberal Progressivism, just smear.
You drank the neocon kool-aid, now…..lie down and go to sleep. It won’t hurt much when your party dies.
Why can’t this site find conservatives I’ve heard of? I thought the whole point was to express the conservative Hollywood voice, yet you’re relying on some journalist from West Virginia? Bring out Milius!
“Do you notice that liberals like Broadsword NEVER support Democracy outside of America. And I guess there is debate that they support it here as well.”
That’s funny, Frank. You must mean like the way you support France.
Meh. I’m on the fence with this one. Sure, she’s only 16 and living in Hollywood, but this doesn’t sound like a case of consciously trying to fit in. She doesn’t even realize she’s spitting propoganda – she really doesn’t care. Maybe she will when she’s older, but I doubt it. Besides, if she wanted to she could get herself informed. We’re roughly the same age (she’s actually one year older than I am) and I’m politcally aware about just about everything.
I haven’t watched Disney since Annette had ears.
Miss Lovato is a product of government education.
The scary thing is that this dumb mindless goofball will eventually go into a voting booth for the rest of her useless life and have an effect on our lives. I guess 9 11 wasn’t that much of a wake up call to get kids like here to pull their heads out of their butts. God help us all it the future of this country is in her hands
What do we expect her to say? She’s a child of the media, and the media have never accepted the premise of the war, much less the stakes. When America wasn’t doing well, the war was fodder for their attacks on the military and Bush. Now that we are doing well, it’s a non-event. At the same time, Bush himself has not impressed enough upon the public the stakes: “We’re at war — but go shopping.” If you’re not in the military, or have a family member or friend in it, or not otherwise extraordinarily conscientious or patriotic, how does this war impinge upon your awareness except as an annoying abstraction, something that should just end “no matter who wins”.
Just checked back in to see how badly losers flail. And that’s you and your party, bud.
You didn’t just lose, you lost epically. You lost the House, and the Senate, and the Rose Garden. In one fell swoop. You lost so badly we just put a Black Guy in the White House.
I know it’s wrong to feed the trolls, but this is stupid on such an epic level, I just can’t resist. Um, hey rocket scientist….The Democrats one the House & Senate 2 YEARS AGO. For Pete’s sake, could you please at least pretend you know something?
BTW, I love the comment about you guys, “Putting a black guy in the White House.” Funny how the “enlightened” Democratic party never even nominated one for President or VP before now (and Republicans practically begged Colin Powell to run 8 years ago). What was it Bill Clinton said? “Even Jesse Jackson won in South Carolina.” Wow, how progressive.
Bobby Jindal will probably be the first non-white Republican Presidential candidate, but the difference is he’ll actually be qualified. I’ll be sitting on the edge of my seat to see how many Liberals support him.
You do have to consider the fact she was birthed by someone who wanted to name her child after Demi Moore, known at the time of this girl’s birth for her nude pix and giving her own kids strange names.
But you know what gets me? Why is every damn Disney show about girls who aspire to be celebrities or are celebrities? Where’s the girl who’s a science prodigy? Where’s the girl who’s a 21st century Nancy Drew? Heck, I’ll even take a normal girl who tries to survive the usual pitfalls of middle school, and not the Afternoon Special Problem of the Week crap either.
I’m not so much bothered by her shallow thinking on the political issues of the day (hey, I wasn’t hugely informed at 16 either), but rather her default positions, the positions an uninformed person takes because they sound good on paper. When I was 16, for instance, I would have argued for government-funded health care and unlimited funding for schools with no strings attached, because if you don’t bother to think about the workability and consequences of these policies, they sound good and compassionate. This girl, however, takes a position that should not sound good to anyone, that it makes no difference whether the U.S. wins or loses a war against a bunch of murderous wackjobs, hellbent on inflicting a brutal authoritarian regime on the Iraqi people, to replace the old brutal authoritarian regime we removed. Of course we should win, for our own security and for that of the Iraqi people, and it’s a cause for concern that this girl can’t see that. It’s really unfortunate that culture and education have elevated a “peace”-at-any-price attitude into a perceived virtue.
My elder relatives reminded me often that I was too stupid to be talking so much when I was a teen. They also affirmed that there should be plenty of time for me to shut my mouth, open my eyes and ears and smarten up. Then it would take another few years to learn how to use that intelligence (i.e. wisdom).
Let’s hope and pray that Demi attains intelligence and then wisdom in the next few years.
For people who think this story’s not important…she’s going to be voting in a few years. It’s very important, imo. She’s one of the rising stars and, like it or not, will influence people with her inane comments. Keep track of what other crap she spews.
This bimbo is only slightly younger than Joan of Arc or Lady Jane Grey were when they died for their political beliefs.
Nate,
In case you missed it. Big Hollywood here is not so much a journalistic endeavor as it is a blog where many people can come and share opinion and experience. the point of this piece was how uninformed and go with what is popular are young people are. And this young lady is a role model to the kids who watch her.. which means they are going to be exposed this pop culture attitude through her. Do you really want the next generation with a attitude that pretty much says “who cares about this nation?”
Demi? Lovato? I really don’t know who is more stupid…her mom or her. perhaps both. Obviously the family doesn’t have an original thought in their collective heads.
She’s right. The only disgrace is that of the
media-military-industrial complex that instigated
the occupation (for self-gain), in the first place.
Get the hell out.
Titov, say what you really think: Arabs aren’t capable of democracy. Oh, I know, it doesn’t sound very open-minded when it’s put that way, does it?
There’s only one plausible explanation for Broadsword’s passionate defense of Demi Lovato, and it’s that the poor guy has a giant crush her. Chivarly is not dead, it just lives down in mom’s basement surrounded by Dungeons & Dragons figurines and photos of Demi Lovato. If he keeps stroking that sword, maybe she’ll magically appear.
Pete:
The point of Joe the Plumber is to demonstrate the size of the gap between liberal elite opinion and the views of ordinary Americans. That this should be construed as a veneration of mediocrity and low intelligence is bizarre, and it speaks volumes about the attitudes of far too many liberals toward their fellow citizens.
For the most part, both liberals and conservatives are for and against the same things. Nobody except a few extremists on the far fringes of both groups wants a polluted environment, bad schools, racial-ethnic discrimination, high crime rates, widespread unemployment, unaffordable housing, poor access to health care, a decrepit infrastructure, or a failing economy. The disagreements are over how best to avoid or correct those problems. Conservatives generally prefer market solutions, while liberals generally prefer direct intervention by government. Conservatives are wary of government because it tends to permanently expand to fill any perceived vacuum and to become a threat to liberty; liberals are wary of markets because they seem chaotic and wasteful and to promote a socially unhealthy degree inequality.
None of this would be beyond the possibility of reasonable debate, except that a moral dimension attaches to questions about means, and that evokes a very great tendency to focus on the imputed motives of people on the other side. This has always been the case, and it will never change. The process is forever one in which nothing ever gets resolved in a final, permanent way; there is never an ultimate winner, only temporary victories by one side or the other. Viewed over any significant period of time, what we do in America is muddle through. And that’s exactly how it needs to work, because there is some amount of truth on both sides, and muddling through is the only possible way a republic like this could still be around to thrive in freedom.
I believe Ms. Lavoto, her agent, her manager, her attorney, her producer, her parents, her teachers, heck the rest of the hollywood community should google “be-headings” and watch the videos. All of them. Then they might have to re-think their position that this war against terror doesn’t matter. I would wager they would even take a more positive view of the resort at Guantanamo Bay.
This poor, innocent girl was ignorant and uninformed before she went to Hollywood. Now, she’s been imbued with wisdom and knowledge and all that stuff. It’s an American success story. And now she’s sharing the truth with the rest of us. I mean, how selfless is that?
What’s next? Not some predictable blather from idiots and their victims (like little Miss Lovato), as some mean, close minded adults would say. No, we will be enlightened by the likes of all the children in Hollywood. Ya gotta love ‘em.
Since when does having a show on the Disney Channel make one a “starlet?” I think it makes you a person with a show on the Disney Channel.
Why on earth should anyone care what a 15-year-old “starlet” thinks about war, peace, or popcorn, for that matter?
Titov said….I mean, when W took over he actually had a record budget surplus, one he frittered away immediately on a massive tax cut and deficit spending his phony war. Oh, that’s right, it’s really the fault of laws that were designed to prevent racial redlining in the mortgage market, in other words, conservatives are arguing that the true blame for the economic collapse is black homeowners.
You see, this is the beauty of sites like Big Hollywood. Once we can get past the silliness of, “Republicans are all racists,” or “Liberals all want us to lose,” you get to real, provable facts that show how much or little someone knows about what’s going on. George Bush “Inherited a surplus,” according to Liberals, but they always forget to mention that he also inherited a tech bubble where Yahoo (an internet company that had never made a profit) was trading at $250 a share (yup, no danger of that going down). Shortly after taking office, the economy took a downward spiral. A vapid, political zealot might see that as proof of his fault, but anyone who has ever studied economics knows that it takes longer for anything the government does to directly affect the economy. Then you add 9/11 and the airlines almost imploding because no one wanted to fly, and you have a picture that is far different from the Nirvana Liberals like to pretend it was.
Then our hero Titov goes on to say that Bush “wasted the surplus on tax cuts.” Evidently facts are something that he is frightened of, and I think we should all have compassion. It’s pretty easy to go look at the money collected by the Federal government after the tax cuts, and it went up from where it was. That’s the whole point to Conservative philosophy on tax cuts….it stimulates growth. It’s so painfully simple that I’m embarrassed my friends on the Left seem incapable of actually reading the numbers (even one of the debate moderators pointed out to Obama that raising capital gains taxes has always caused a reduction in revenues collected).
Finally, he points out that Conservatives are bad because they blame the financial meltdown on poor people who just want to get a house. Never mind the fact that the bad loans not only crippled our economy, the bundled paper damaged economies all over the world. There was just an article on Yahoo News today about the 10 worst places to buy a home. One of them had subprime lenders handing out half-million dollar loans (with little or no down-payment required) to people earning less than $50,000. It doesn’t take a math major to figure out that those people couldn’t possibly repay those loans, so the banks got screwed, stock investors got screwed, home owners (who saw their property values plumet) got screwed, and finally the poor people who got loans they couldn’t pay back got screwed (losing their money, their homes, and their credit ratings). I don’t know if there ever has been a more perfect example of Liberal policies in action.

What an utterly moronic statement. Try getting your information from somewhere other than Moveon.org or the Huffington Post. The War was “STARTED” by the Hussein government in 1990 when they invaded Kuwait and threatened to seize the oil fields of Saudi Arabia, knucklehead. Since then, we’ve been in a cease-fire which was contingent upon Hussein honoring the cease-fire agreement he signed in 1991 to keep the coalition forces from taking Baghdad and shooting him in the head…not to mention destroying his vaunted “Republican Guard.” I suppose you’re too young to understand or remember that. When the war resumed in 2003, it was in part a response to 10 years of the Hussein government IGNORING his obligations under that treaty and aiding and abetting the same sort of people who took down the WTC. That is…terrorists! Wake up and smell the coffee. We’ve given Iraq a chance at self-rule. If they can’t make it work for them, it won’t be because the U.S. hasn’t sacrificed for them to do so and given them the wherewithall to MAKE it work.
Pete-
Glad you’re here. We NEED to know the character (or lack thereof) of our domestic enemies and the enemies of freedom and self-reliance. No one is preventing gays from marrying. They have the right to marry just like anyone else. They just can’t marry EACH OTHER, any more than a father can marry his own daughter, a leftie sheepherder marry his favorite “date,” or even, in most States, marry one’s first cousin. Nor can you marry your favorite blow-up doll. All Prop 8 did was DEFINE what constitutes a legal marriage…nothing more. It did NOT prevent gay (or straight) men from marrying gay (or straight) women. All it did was declare that for a “marriage” to take place, one party must be male and the other, female…period. If the female wants to be called the “husband” and the male partner the “wife,” that’s perfectly all right. If gays want the same benefits and privileges of married couples, all they have to do is draw up a contract saying so and granting each other such rights and benefits. But that’ll never be recognized as a “marriage.” Call it a “partnership” or “arrangement” or call it a sombrero, for that matter. It just isn’t a marriage.
Amy,
I’m guessing we’re about the same age. Otherwise you wouldn’t have put in the amusing *beeps*. But seriously, being young isn’t an exucuse for ignorance.
In fact, your post is so incoherent and stupid I don’t even feel it’s worth responding to. But you do need to know this – I actually know soldiers who have been to Iraq (“some foreign country that nobody’s even heard of”? Who are you, Neville Chamberlain PMSing?) and they care VERY, VERY deeply about Iraq and the Iraqi people. And you should be grateful you have such brave and compassionate individuals fighting for you.
is it not enough for the “entertainment industry” to keep taking our young women “actors” and turning them into little whores.like it is a “right of passage” for these girls.in order to make the transition to adult movies or tv.they all must go through it,or suffer the consequences.do we really need to turn them into “political whores” also.is this some sort of “liberal card check”,.making sure she has her “lib creds”.cause, you know we don’t want no “posers” being involved with the inauguration of the “messiah”.
“Those who stand for nothing will fall for anything.” Alexander Hamilton. The “can’t we all just get along” mindset of the quislings on the left and the idealistic but ignorant youth who hang on their every word is nothing new. The frightening thing is that it is becoming so prevalent in our society. This country is truly deeply divided between the left and the right and those folks in the middle who just don’t care anymore – “It doesn’t matter if we win or lose” just as long as the war ends. I find it chilling but not surprising, given the people who teach in our schools and WHAT they teach. Hard to blame Ms Lovato for her lack of education when it comes to history and WHY wars are fought and what happens to people who feel nothing matters but the war ending. They are usually the first to be subjugated or exterminated. At sixteen it is not too late for Demi to get a clue, but Hollyood is not the place for that.
I have no particular problem with Ms Lovato OR what she spews. People fought and died so that she can be stupid and ill-informed and prove it by saying this stuff. What bothers me most is where she GOT such idiotic ideas and THAT’s an area that we’d be well-advised to attack–and soon, before our badly sub-standard education system and Hollyweird have a chance to damage yet another generation of young Americans. This site is a good starting point, but we’d better start de-certifying the NEA, ACTA and other teacher unions and get rid of all of those unreconstructed communists from the 60’s & 70’s who now hold tenured positions in our universities and those who are indoctrinating our elementary and HS kids instead of educating them. Hollyweird is easy. Just quit patronizing the junk these leftists make–be MUCH more selective about what we pay to see. When Alec Baldwin or Susan Sarandon become a DRAIN on studios’ bottom lines, they won’t get any more gigs and the writers and producers who make such schlock as the recent re-make of “The Day The Earth Stood Still” will have to look elsewhere to peddle their far-left garbage.
Has this kid been fitted for a burqa yet?
Hey Amy, chill pill. Obama will make everything all right tomorrow
By the way, my Uncle got both of his left blown off in Korea and would slap you silly for being such a ignorant fool if only he have his hand back.
Liberals are really closet racists for the most part–and lots of times out-of-the-closet racists. Which is more “racist?” Assuming that blacks are inherently inferior and in need of liberals’ “help” to achieve economic and social parity with whites, or demanding the same things of blacks that we demand of white or Asian kids so they’ll have an EQUAL chance at economic or social success, BY VIRTUE OF THEIR OWN STRENGTHS AND TALENTS?
The old cliche about teaching a man to fish is ABSOLUTELY how we should approach race relations in this country and the whole world for that matter. Having a black man sitting in the White House won’t do a single thing to improve race relations, if all he does is the same, tired, left-wing “solutions” to the problems faced by other blacks in this country…giveaway programs and projects. “Entitlement” should be the nastiest word in the English language…especially to black people. That it’s NOT explains much.
