Michael Moore’s Latest Mocks American Capitalism
by Ted BaehrIf only he would use his talent for goodness instead of evil!
The bumbling fictional spy Maxwell Smart often used this phrase to describe some of the super-villains he faced on the TV spy show “Get Smart” in the 1960s. The same statement may be applied to Michael Moore, the filmmaking darling of the Left who has made another polemical documentary, “Capitalism: A Love Story.” This time, Moore calls for the replacement of America’s capitalist system with a socialist system, including, of course, pro-communist proposals to share all wealth or profits equally.

A talented filmmaker (see our full review here where we list most of the major problems with Moore’s new subversive, Marxist diatribe promoting his radical utopian nightmare), Moore begins his latest movie by comparing the United States to the Ancient Roman Empire, where, according to his sometimes pompous and condescending narration, society became divided between the super rich and the super poor (clearly an exaggeration). He then discusses the post-war economic boom in the United States in the 1950s and early 60s.
After showing the consumerism that began to captivate many Americans during those times, and the riches that came to the leaders of industry and the wealthy bankers and brokers on Wall Street, Moore cuts to a shot of President Jimmy Carter during the late 1970s sadly complaining about the “greed” and “materialism” of America. Then, in a mocking tone, Moore says Ronald Reagan came riding into the White House, but that Reagan and his Treasury Secretary, Donald Reagan, formerly of Merrill Lynch, designed policies that hurt blue collar workers and encouraged Americans to borrow too much money so they could buy homes and modern luxuries, while the “fatcats” on Wall Street got richer and richer.
Interspersed within this somewhat biased history lesson, Moore describes the economic “meltdown” that occurred last year. He puts all the blame on bankers, mortgage lenders and financial institutions who, he says, corrupt the politicians in Washington. Moore also visits several families and workers harmed by the economic collapse. Included among these scenes are people whose mortgages have been foreclosed, a family that is defiantly still living in its foreclosed home, and workers in Chicago who took action when their company suddenly went bankrupt and refused to pay the workers what it apparently still owed them.
Early in the movie, Moore also interviews the owner of Condo Vultures in Florida, a real estate company that buys up foreclosed homes at very low prices in order to make a profit when the homes are repaired. In addition, Moore discusses the economic decline and collapse of General Motors, where his father used to work in Flint, Michigan. While discussing these things, Moore laments, “That’s the point of capitalism; it lets you get away with anything.”
Finally, while performing several comic stunts, including a visit to the Wall Street banks that received government bailouts, Moore promotes a socialist vision with a Communist polemic advocating sharing the wealth equally. During these scenes, Moore, several Catholic priests and a Catholic bishop cite Jesus Christ’s concern for the poor and needy as inspiration, while declaring unequivocally that capitalism is clearly evil and unbiblical. Moore also cites for inspiration President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s speech calling for a “second bill of rights,” including the “right” to “adequate medical care,” “a useful and remunerative job,” “a decent home,” “a good education,” “adequate food and clothing and recreation,” and “the right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad.”
Wow! How exactly is the government going to define all these new alleged rights, Mr. President?
The best, most coherent and perhaps most truthful part of the movie is Moore’s attack on the government bailouts for Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs, Citicorp, the Bank of America, AIG, etc. He correctly notes that these bailouts don’t seem to have done much of anything for the people who have lost their jobs and their homes. Furthermore, he clearly shows that the government doesn’t have a clue where exactly this bailout money went. Moreover, he shows that members of Congress are in on this and other alleged Wall Street con games, including Democratic Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut. Of course, President Obama also seems to be fully involved in these allegedly corrupt schemes, but Moore lets the President off the hook because he apparently loves Obama soaring, but phony leftist rhetoric of radical “Hope and Change.”
The rest of Moore’s movie presents a very strong, somewhat mixed worldview with very strong politically correct, leftist ideology. Although Moore includes overt, positive references to Jesus Christ and the Bible, including the crucifixion, he uses these references to promote his radical, anti-capitalist, pro-socialist, and even Communist socio-political philosophy. It’s all extremely polemical and one-sided in a deceitful way that will fool many gullible people, especially many young people.

This is akin to a pimp making a movie dumping on prostitution.

Lord, he is such a moron… He is just bitter because the Unions disabled GM… but instead of actually attacking the real problem he will attack the problem that could have kept him and his father in a job… that is if the Unions hadn't been JUST as greedy….
Moron… I shall now call him Michael Mooron… :/

My one tip for young idealists looking for the true path: Never trust a fat Socialist.
I'll say it again – communism/socialism DOESN'T WORK. Good grief. Don't these people read their history books?
Michael Moore = Lying Scumbag
"During these scenes, Moore, several Catholic priests and a Catholic bishop cite Jesus Christ’s concern for the poor and needy as inspiration, while declaring unequivocally that capitalism is clearly evil and unbiblical."
I'm not convinced that the Catholic Church's practice aborting the body of Christ just to serve Social Justice is biblical.
Is selling your soul for a few measly pieces of government silver really the path towards heaven because it looks to me like going to h*ll without even stopping in purgatory; even more hideous, you are dragging all the poor down with you when you go.
Catholic Church, what good is your religious institution when you have aborted the body of Christ by serving the serpent's Social Justice?
My thoughts on the "second bill of rights":
You do have those rights currently, Mr. Moore. People just have to get off their asses and seek those opportunities instead of having everything given to them. Also, as a college student, I have known many kids who have pissed away a good education and people who cannot afford homes due to their own materialism.
I'm about 1/2 way through Thomas Sowell's Basic Economics and it's painfully apparent that Moore is one of the many high profile people who are just painfully ignorant of simple economics.

What I don't get is how all of these freakin' socialists/communists can make all of THEIR millions on capitalism and then decry it to the average working person. What? It's ok for THEM to make millions but not everyone else. Let's see tubby moore give his millions away to Africa if he's so disgusted by it.

I suppose by this time next year the government will require the film be shown in all our school systems…….what a load of crap. This guy needs a one way ticket to the Soviet Union. Let's see how his film making fares there. He's an insult to my intelligence. Does anyone know…. has he been offered a nights stay in the Lincoln bedroom??
“The European liberal believes, economically, in a Hoover-like laissez-faire; the American liberal, by pure contradiction, is a pseudo-communist…The New Dealers, strangely enough, have been employing Fascist means to gain liberal ends.” (Roger Shaw, North American Review, 1934)
Sound familiar? Hey Michael, don't be a hypocrite. Give all of your money to ACORN.
350lbs??
Which leg???
80/20 principle anyone. Socialism exalts the 80 at the expense of the 20 = colossal fail. I’m still waiting for fat ass to announce his movie will be released for free?
When will people stop paying to see this a-hole's lies?? Haven't his "documentaries" been shot full of holes already??
This guy is a miserable excuse for a human being. I can just picture him sitting in his giant penthouse shoveling twinkies down his gullet by the fist-full laughing at all the idiots that keep funding his lies.
Ok, I'm going to say I'm not a religious go to church every Sunday type. But I don't understand how Christianity is congruent with socialism. The central theme of all nominations of Christianity is free will. You have to accept Christ as your savior and accept He died on the cross for your sins to be saved. But that acceptance is of your own choice. As such, how is FORCED charity a part of redemption? I understand we are supposed to act more Christ like, but isn't forcing someone to give, the antithesis of free will, and by extension, the antithesis of self-determination? And is that forced charity even helpful for the supposed "beneficiaries"? Doesn't living off the forced servitude of others negate one's own self-determination?
is he talking about the capitalism that made him rich??? Freaking moron !!!!

That's their whole mantra. Just look at Al Gore. The guy is a gluttonous energy hog and refuses to cut back all the while demanding the rest of us stop using light bulbs…
Moore is the same way. He wants everyone else to stop accumulating wealth, but he'll keep his penthouse and his limos and his metric ton of twinkies he consumes each day.
As Gary Graham would say FTS!!!!

Excellent point, wish I could give you more than one thumbs up.
"Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime." I love this saying. My dad used to tell me this in my more liberal days. It really stuck with me. What people need is a swift kick in the rear end to get them motivated. I for one feel a great sense of pride when I work for a living. I know I can support my family. These lazy folks who CAN work but don't should experience this feeling. Once they do, they will be hooked.
This fat piece of crap has made millions off the capitalist system he so dispises. Come to think of it this discription fits Fat Albert Gore. Separated at Birth? Loathsome toads.
He should have gone back to the time when America WAS socialist. Back when William Bradford setup a form of socialism and the colony was nearly wiped out. The lesson was learned early on that it won't work. Once a free market capitalist system was put in place the colony flourished.
What about that part of American history Mr. Moore???
we actually need 'enemies' like Moore…
Best spokesman FOR laissez faire capitalism EVER. Perfect reverse barometer if you will. Even his ardent Kool-Aid supporters are embarrased by this (read the reviews!) and his gasbag propagandizing. Maybe some dim freshmen will enjoy, and it should be popular at SEIU soirees.
It'll make squat at the box office, so there's THAT…
Capitalism is evil, so DON'T PAY TO GO SEE MY MOVIE, KIDS!! Pirate it, or sneak into the theatre, or steal the DVD!
Buuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp.
Gee. There has to be SOMEONE out there who could turn the tables on MM.
Paging O'Keefe and Giles!
The social justice doctrine of the Catholic Church never condemned capitalism! In the typical manner of Michael Moor's "mocumentary", he would take things out of context and mislead viewers.
Visit http://www.usccb.org/sdwp/projects/socialteaching... to read on the 7 themes of social justice.
Also the latest "Caritas in Veritatae" encylical by Pope Benedict 16 explained about the economic justice. As one commentor indicated: "thug-governments … have more to do with poverty and hunger…" http://www.eppc.org/publications/pubID.3868/pub_d...
Who funds these idiotic films? Surely they make about as much sense financially as the premise of "The Producers" – planning for a flop. The backers must not be bothered about actually making money as they push their agenda. Is the goal of such outrageous movies simply to try to distract the people who take offense at them from the real harm which is being done by the socialist / progressive / statist politicians in Washington?
Moore is worse than irrelevant. Focus on fixing the real problem in Washington in 2010.
Second Bill of Rights? Obviously FDR and MIchael Moore-on don't understand the definition of the word "right." A right does NOT come at the expense of one person for the benefit of another. A right to a "useful … job?" Who's going to give that job? A right to adequate (socialized) health care? At whose expense?
It is amusing how these socialist entertainers all of a sudden become capitalists when it comes to their own products.
I'm unsure if he's currently married, but he reportedly has an 11-year-old daughter… that he sends to private school.
The cognitive dissonance must be deafening for that guy.
Larry Elder did it. Look up "Michael and Me".
Michael Moore is fat.

That's the funniest/smartest d*mned thing I've heard in the past year!
If you don't put that on t-shirts and sell them, and immediately, you're mi$$ing a great opportunity.
Cheers.
It's only deafening when you have a consience with which to hear. His was seared to death a long time ago, exactly the same as the Polanski apologist dimwits. That's why that species of leftist goes around moaning about how everything "feels" to them, and whether or not their "feelings" are ok. In other words, the kind of silliness a normal person successfully grew out of a little while after potty training.
A friend of mine works at Goldman in NY. Moore showed up one day to pull his stunt but didn't have a permit to do anything. They almost physically had to bar him from the premises until he came back with the paperwork.
I have no idea how my friend managed to maintain his cool dealing with the bulbous clown.
Got to love how well Moore did with capitalism. I would love to see his tax return where he is returning ALL his profits to their rightful owners.
Let's not forget the moral decadence of the ruling class.
Probably misreading sections of the Bible. For example, the book of Acts refers to believers sharing all things, group meal, etc. The early deacons were charged with various charitable projects for widows and orphans.
What they conveniantly leave out is the fact that it was all VOLUNTARY.
The widows basically were eligible for aid if their FAMILY couldn't provide for them. They also leave out where Paul instructs that if a man doesn't work he shouldn't eat. So much for able bodied welfare recipients.
There is also what happened to Ananias and Saphira, who sold property and donated part of it to the early church. They didn't give all the proceeds. They didn't have to. There is NOTHING in the Old or New Testaments that said they had to. Hey, God himself only requires 10%!
They died on the spot when donating this, not because they didn't give it all, but because they LIED and said they did. They lied to God and the apostles. God decided it was time for an example of the consequences of sin.
I put Moore in the "super rich" category
I want him to spread his wealth around in a show of solidarity for the people…….
** I know he is never going to do so
i'd like to see Mr Moore donate all the profits he's made from his mockumentaries to charity and live in a tract house or mobile home.
The sad thing is that the same liberals who clamor for the "separation of church and state" are often the ones that want the state to legislate their own theological vision. So long as the interpretation of Christianity is according to liberal orthodoxy, then they have no problem with a theocracy.
Is he donating every penny made on this film to charity?
Is he donating every penny made to charity?
Actually, Tim, I don't think she cares about that. I think she just hates Catholics. Perhaps some kind of Protestant denomination that hates "popery" as they used to call it, like, oh, 500 frakin' years ago.
"aborted the body of Christ". WTH does that mean?
Even as a former Catholic, I'm offended by what you are saying.
One thing this ex-altar boy would love to ask priests who push wealth-redistribution: "When is the Vatican going to sell off its collection of art and distribute the proceeds to the poor?"
“That’s the point of capitalism; it lets you get away with anything.”
Well, if anyone is living proof of that statement, it's Michael Moore.
[...] Michael Moore’s Latest Mocks American Capitalism [...]
Your one thumb is welcome.
This Twinkie with ears is so totally twisted. He's consumed so many twinkies and ho-ho's that he doesn't realize that he is a firmly entrenched participant in capitalism. After all, I do not think he uses all his own money to finance his films (if thats what they can be called). And I am sure he doesn't send all his money to Uncle Fidel to improve that wonderful healthcare system. His last film describes him to a T:
SICKO!
I would say I would look forward to Mr. Moore covering American history but then he might actually make a movie on the topic that manages to convince people what a horrible place the United States used to be.
Can capitalism even be mocked? It's like mocking a healthy lifestyle. Hey, maybe Moore's next film could expose Big Fitness. He's the perfect spokesblimp- sorry, I'll leave the namecalling to the left.
Capitalism is the private ownership of capital, goods and/or property as opposed to social ownership. That's all it means.
Everything he rails against applies more appropriately to Socialism. He wants to separate business and state.
NEWS FLASH: Scams and greed exist in Social programs.
I don't wish to be gross here but I hear he has I beam braces attached to his toilet.
Some needed to hold up massive buttocks and some to to hold the results of him sitting there
in the first place.
Mom, please forgive me.
P.S. Ok its juvenile but so is that maroon's movie.
As Tony Sopprano would say, "I think it's time you seriously considered salads."
As much as I do believe that Mr. Moore is a master manipulator of the truth in order to satisfy the agenda of his films, I still wouldn't take the word of Dr. Baehr entirely to heart, especially after reading this excerpt: "Although Moore includes overt, positive references to Jesus Christ and the Bible, including the crucifixion, he uses these references to promote his radical, anti-capitalist, pro-socialist, and even Communist socio-political philosophy". As compared to the other side doing it any better by protesting until ad nausium on basically everything. I wonder why nobody has tried the concept that Donny and Marie exemplified: "I'm a little bit country; and I'm a little bit Rock 'n' Roll". Isn't there a way we can do "I'm a little bit capitalist; and I'm a little bit socialist"? Wouldn't that be a refreshing concept?
As a moneygrubbing tool of the proletariat, Mr. Moore is missing a lucrative opportunity. He could sell ad space on his multiple chins. Tattoos of cheeto's, pork rinds, hope & change, Dr. Pepper, etc., could bring as much as fifty cents a month. It's hell when your popular!
Michael Moore is right. Capitalism only values money; the almighty Dollar is king and profit is God. Communism though values people; human beings in all their glory working to help one another.
This is why capitalists lock up their money and communists lock up their people . . .
i'm pretty sure i won't see this crap, but if i did i'd jack it. i'd jack it online, add my own bonus feature with milton friedman, copy then sell them. or i'd cop a bootleg dvd from jamal down the street for 5 bucks. at least then i'd know my 5 bucks would help jamal put some food on his table instead of allowing michael moore to profit in the capitalist system he hates so much.
he should have called his movie jackable.
Very well said, Sue, especially the part about the body of Christ. Well done.
Sorry, i misread. I retract my "well said."
I suspect Moore thinks all his millions are exempt from redistribution. Taking his money is the first thing the socialist/communists will do. The second thing, when he is no longer useful, will be to stand him against a wall with a blindfold and a cigarette. The last word he'll hear is "Fire." Of course, Moore could save himself from all that, just give his millions away, take up his cross and follow Christ.
Oh, please tell me this was totally tongue in cheek!
One can only pray. For his sake.
Since he hates capitalism soooo much, then he won't mind people not spending their money on his awful movie in the capitalist system. He also looks like someone who has never shared food with someone less fortunate. Maybe if he rode a bike instead of travel around in a limo he wouldn't be 500lbs and contributing to global warming. If America would just ship him off to N.Korea we would help the enviroment, have a larger food supply and his dream of living under a facist communist country would come true. It would be a win-win for everyone.
