Angels, Demons & Democrats
by Ted BaehrHow much of the box office of “Angels & Demons” will end up in the Democrat campaigns? If it makes money, it could be a lot.
Tom Hanks, the star of “Angels & Demons”, endorsed Barack Obama, claiming he represents a “seismic shift” in our political and social fabric. He said an Obama victory will “redefine our republic” (see his YouTube video here).
He backed this endorsement with $29,800 in contributions (see here). He also gave to the campaigns of Al Franken ($14,600), one of the most deceitful public figures in the United States; Henry Waxman ($500); Barbara Boxer ($500); Patrick Kennedy ($250); and, Ethan Berkowitz ($250), all Democrats. He also contributed $12,300 to the Franken Recount Fund! In addition to his political contributions, Tom gave $50,000 (the maximum) to President Obama’s Inauguration Fund.
Ron Howard, the famous director of “Angels & Demons,” was equally smitten by Barack Obama.
He even recorded a video endorsement during the 2008 presidential election in costume as Opie with Andy Griffith and then as Richie Cunningham with Henry Winkler (see it here). In it, he says, “I know a lot of you are thinking I’m just following some liberal Hollywood trend. That’s not me.” He said it is crucial that we vote for change adding, “I mean real change - the kind of change that will allow us to trust our government again – which is why I’ve chosen to vote for Barack Obama. And, I say that not as a Democrat or a Republican because I have voted for candidates from both parties in the past, and I probably will again.”
Ron’s political contributions are less non-partisan than his video. In fact, he gave to Hillary Clinton’s primary campaign before being smitten by Barack Obama. His largest contributions went to the Democratic National Committee and Committee for Change (see full list here). Like Tom, Ron also contributed $50,000 (the maximum) to President Obama’s inauguration.
Sony, the company releasing “Angels & Demons,” was smitten enough with Barack Obama to buy the international rights to the documentary “By The People: The Election of Barack Obama.”
According to the Center for Responsive Politics the TV, Hollywood and the music industry contributed $8.6 million to the 2008 Barack Obama Campaign and only $1.1 million to John McCain. Overall, the industry contributed $36.5 million to Democrats (78%) and $10.4 million to Republicans (22%) in 2008. This is a big increase from the Clinton/Dole days of 1996, when the industry only spent $12.3 million on Democrats (62%) and $7.5 million on Republicans (38%).
Hollywood’s favorite Senate candidates were Democrat Al Franken ($639,838), followed by Barbara Boxer, D-California ($318,518), and Chris Dodd, D-Connecticut (285,520), who was able to land a questionably sweetheart deal with Countrywide during the housing bubble.
It’s not just celebrities that favor Democrats. The Center for Responsive Politics reports that Hollywood corporations favor Democrats by wide margins: DreamWorks SKG (100% Democrat), Creative Artists Agency (99% Democrat), Time Warner (81% Democrat), News Corp and Fox (77% Democrat), Walt Disney Co. (74% Democrat), and Sony Corp. (67% Democrat).
Tom, Ron and everyone else in the country have the right to endorse, support and vote for whomever they please. Likewise, however, the American people have the right to buy tickets and DVDs of the movies they please. When an actor or director uses their celebrity for political purposes, they should not be upset if people apply their political convictions when making choices to purchase movie tickets.
Many Americans are not excited about the current seismic shift toward big government. Some of them may not be anxious this summer to help Tom and Ron buy tickets to a 2012 inauguration for President Obama.

Boycott! Though the movie looks good, gonna keep my money in my pocket.
In the new Obamaland, there will be only two classes of citizens. One class will be the elite (the nobility) and the other class will be the masses (the serfs). None of the collectivist programs, such as national health care, will be the fate of the nobility. The nobility will be able to buy their way out. This is why these collectivist programs are so popular with the Hollywood Left. They won't have to participate. Neither will the government employees who will decide the fate of masses. They will be exempt, too. So, my friend, when you're sitting in the clinic for hours on end, don't expect to see a Tom Hanks or a Hillary Clinton sitting next to you. There are special medical facilities for the nobility where you aren't welcome.
DO NOT, give money to people who do not have your best interest at heart. Let alone, people who want to destroy your way of life!
Would you donate money to the I.R.S. to hire more investigators?
The only number that surprises me is Fox and News Corp.Well I guess it doesn't surprise me much. All corporations shift with the wind and contrary to popular belief love them some big government.
The only thing these American hating Christian bashing Swine get from me is… Ashes. Not one penny of my sinful Capitalistic money. That's a message these spoiled Utopian sacred cows understand for Money is their GOD. Even before Their Lord and Savior Obama comes….. MONEY!
No, but Barack Obama will. What does that tell you?
That seems like an awful lot of money to support a government that will tell you how to live your own life. Although I'm guessing that somewhere in the socialist tax plans there will ultimately be a celebrity exemption. Wouldn't want to bite the hand that feeds them.
I don't have to try to boycott Hollywood. There has been so few movies that I'd want to see right away in the past decade, that I haven't bothered to go see them. I just can't stand seeing these loud mouthed lefties on screen. If it weren't for TCM I'd rarely see a movie anymore.
Last year I got 3 MONTHS free Starz (I think, maybe it was Cinemax) from Direct TV for being a customer for quite some time. They showed the same 15 or 20 movies during the entire time. Of course there were a few exceptions, but it wasn't worht the time to see what was on.
I can't even rely on Indy films anymore, as they all have the obligatory Bush sucks scene or some such Right-Hate.
But when I hear Tom Hanks touted as the great actor, I think back to Bachelor Party. That's the Hanks I remember.
I read Tom Hanks will earn north of $45 million for his work on A&D. In a world like his, he is above economic realities. Like George Soros, he and Ron Howard can buy redemption from now until the day they die and never want for caviar, mansions, or yachts. I must admit I am amazed how 'dirty capitalists' such as they are and financial elites with their multi-million dollar estates can support socialist 'egalitarians'. Must be a guilt thing or something.
I'm not going to bother, I was sucked with the other one. While I like the both of them as movie Actors and Directors. I do not like what the want to make over the nation into, I will go buy a couple of Beers instead.
There a lot of people who have a lot to answer for not the least the 'hollywood elite' and the 'media' at least what we call 'the mainstream media'. Yet there is the feelig with the Obama speech to the Muslim word in June that what they will pay for their treachery and ignorance if not treason may be far beyond what might have been expected. Sharia Law brooks no compromise and the fate of those who hare now stridently pushing their agendas down the throats of everyday Americans who prefer to mind their own business and no one elses, including what happens in the states in the boardrooms and in the bedrooms of the nation. Sharia Law has no favorites. You do as they say or you pay the price. A far higher price, I think than they are paying now in political contributions. Trouble is, their fate may very well be ours if we do not take measures. The very FIRST would be discerning purchases at the boxoffice.
I wasn't going to see Angels and Demons anyhow. I don't enjoy books that play fast and loose with history and then portray themselves as historical fiction. They should be alternate histories at the very least. So why would I be any more excited about seeing the movie versions of the books when we all know that the movie version is always several times worse than the book?
Don't look at me, I've never seen Hanks in anything, including television…………..and I don't plan to start now.
So News Corp and Fox trends 77% Dem. Kind of blows the leftie whine about Fox out of the water now doesn't it? I can't say I have stepped into a theater for over a decade. Don't really think I'll be back any time soon. I really find myself missing the days when patriots ran Hollywood.
Hey Howard, nice hat. What are you smuggling under there big guy, a bowling ball? A cue ball? A lumpy pumpkin? Do you always wear hats indoors for photo shoots? hee hee….
Lawhawk, only the "little people" pay taxes, not heavy hitters like these two. I'd love to be at that meeting every year. I bet the tax attorneys and accountants fighting for the best parking outside Chauteau Hanks and the line to get into Howard's office looks like the que for the porta-potty at a Dead show after a couple of beers.
On this one I have no issues with individuals that contribute to a candidate. If they want to give the max so be it. Giving to Franken that may say something about his character but these guys are characters by profession, not to be taken seriously.
Talking about the play list on the pay channels, now you know where all the straight-to-video flicks go to die. I sat through "Amazon Women on the Moon" in hopes that Roseanna Arquette would get topless. She didn't. Thank God for the fast forward on DVR's.
Hey. Look at the Brietbart headline next to the Big Hollywood site. King of Jordan seeks "57 Arab State Solution…" That's where Hussein Obama got the "57 State" mumbo-jumbo…I knew there was a resonable explanation…
I just saw Franken in his finest role EVER, "baggage handler #2" in "Trading Places". He's dumb as a rock, just like now, but without the whole vote theft issue.
Okay, stupid question time again… (from someone who wants to work in the business one day)
For the folks who haven't been to the theater in ten years… really? Not one move that's been released piqued your interest? The Passion? The Dark Knight? Gladiator? Gran Torino? Lord of the Rings? Etc.
Don't get me wrong, I have no problems with how people decide to spend their money… my parents don't go to the movies, they just wait for HBO. I get it. I suppose I just find it a bit unsettling at times. I'd like to be a filmmaker one day and while I know any movie I make (should I be so lucky) might not appeal to everyone, I can't say I'm a fan of the idea of someone actively deciding not to see one and being proud of it (at least that's the way I read it). That's just me. Hope I didn't offend.
In all this talk of historical inaccuracies, nobody mentions just how excrementally bad Brown's writing is. I enjoy a good potboiler, but I couldn't get through three chapters of A&D. Sheer crapulence! It actually made me angry that he got published. Imagine Buller-Lytton writing a D&D manual and you get the feel of it. Blecch and Feh!
The only thing wrong with Castaway was that Hanks made it back to America. I await the alternate happier ending.
There is truly something wrong with a world that values entertainers, athletes, and other assorted court jesters above people like scientists, inventors, architects, you know, people who actually produce things. It is a Bizzaro-world where people would rather hear from a Jon Stewart, than a Thoms Sowell. We are circling the drain boys and girls.

I boycott Hanks,Howard,Baldwin,Penn and if Garafola is back on 24 next year than I'm out.How much of this idiocy do we put up with. These Hollywood freaks are laughing all the way to the bank.
When big-name Hollywood types go public with their political views, I have to respect that they are willing to alienate large numbers of their fans for those beliefs.
However, where once I might've been able to enjoy their work, now I no longer can, not without thinking of their political agendas and where they throw their money. So it wouldn't make sense for me to spend my money or waste my time watching their movies.
I'm sure these deep thinking play-actors are smart enough to know that there are a lot of people like me. They obviously don't care that they are diminishing their audience. They may even feel smug about it, thinking they are making some sort of noble sacrifice for their beliefs. Me, I see them as blinded by their own illusions and glitter. They don't live in the real world. They're flat-screeners. They might look thirty-feet tall but they're not even real.
To play Captain Miller, Hanks had to at least have a passing aquaintance with honorable people, and be aware of the honorable ideals espoused in the script. I just wonder how a guy can be soaked in that kind of atmosphere, even for a short time, then go back to thinking Hussein Obama would be anything but disastrous for the US.
I still watch Bob Hope movies and John Wayne movies(well not all of them, mostly the John Ford's). I'm a liberal and totally disagreed with their politics, but politics used to be politics, and not a way of life. You people need to go out more, seriously.
I agree in part… it's one thing for an actor to mention his political beliefs but I think it's another for said actor to belittle others for not sharing those beliefs. Two different things.
On Mr. Nolte's last blog, he mentioned Humphrey Bogart, Henry Fonda, and other golden age actors who were also Democrats. Nolte (known back then as Dirty Harry) said that didn't bother him… these actors weren't opponents, they were PROPONENTS. They spent their time talking about what they believed, as opposed to name calling anyone who believed something else.
I thought historical inaccuracies were part of bad writing? In a historical fiction I expect certain standards and they weren't followed, writing craptacular right there. It's like telling me you're giving me a mystery, but it's really more like a poorly written thriller.
I don't mind if an actor or actress has different beliefs politically or religiously until I start feeling like those beliefs are reflected unduly in everything they do. When I start feeling like they're preaching to me every time they open their mouths, I stop paying attention. Everyone knows that Tom Cruise is a crazy Scientologist, but I don't feel like that comes out in his acting. Therefore, I don't tend to avoid his movies unless I'm seriously not interested. I'm disappointed in Hanks, but I hadn't seen him plastering his face all over banging a drum for his politics until recently, so it wasn't a big deal. Seriously, are there folks in Hollywood that haven;t gone off the deep end?
Therein lies the rub: politics used to be politics and not a way of life.
Politics have ceased to be merely politics and have become a way of life. For many of the Left, their politics permeates everything they touch. There haven't been many projects coming out of Hollywood lately that haven't espoused Leftist themes and ideals. Why do you think the box office take in the US has plummeted while it has soared in places like Europe?
I think so, but they're not A-list actors so the media doesn't care. I'm a huge fan of character actors, people like Christopher Walken, Stephen Tobolowski, etc. I have no idea what their politics are!
How quickly the love for Apollo 13 and John Adams evaporates! Remember, you can't ever buy them on any format again because Howard and Hanks will earn residuals!! So what 'acceptable' summer fare is left? Transformers 2, G.I. Joe and Terminator 4?? (I'm actually pretty sure they're all the same movie, after seeing the trailers)
You won't get any argument from me on that. I have another pet peeve that goes along with this. I'll use Tiger Woods as the example. He is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He is a fine human being. He refuses to use his race to promote or denigrate anyone or anything. There is so much good to say about him that I'll limit my praise. BUT, he is not a hero. He wouldn't call himself one, in part because he knows that it cheapens the meaning of the word hero. Half the thugs in the NFL, NBA and any other place where athletes can excel have at one time or another been called a "hero." Hollywood and the left have no idea what the word "hero" means. They think it means "famous" or "rich."
Only those who have taken great risk for others, with no great reward for themselves are heroes. Even people who have overcome great adversity or prejudice are much to be admired, but they are not heroes. If they have helped others to overcome adversity or prejudice, they may very well be heroes. Martin Luther King was a hero. Wanda Sykes and Sean Penn are just loudmouths, taking zero risk in promoting their views in front of very friendly audiences. When those two appear in front of an Islamic warlord in his home country proclaiming the virtues of homosexuality and freedom of religion, then I'll call them heroes (or the more likely word–"martyrs"). When Michael Vick personally goes into South Central L.A. or the South Side of Chicago to rescue abused fighting dogs and chastise the locals for saying "it's a black thing," I'll call him a hero. Until then, he's just a famous scumbag athlete. And when Jon Stewart stands up publicly to praise Thomas Sowell for publicly opposing the black civil rights hucksters, I'll call him a hero (Sowell already is). When Hanks and Opie volunteer to fight for their country on a dark battlefield thousands of miles from home while surrounded by jihadis determined to kill them, I'll call them heroes. Instead, I'll just call them what they are. Middling talents whose sole goal is to make money by popularizing disrespect for the Catholic Church or any other cause that will gain them the applause of their fellow lefties at the expense of everything traditional and decent.
Hey Ron Howard, show some guts. When are you going to make The Satanic Verses into a film…………….
I didn't think so. I concur with those who say that our best weapon to fight this Hollywood bigotry is with our money. Boycott boycott boycott these anti-Christian Hollywood bigots.
And Ron Howard really is Ron Coward.
Ted Baehr reccomending that films be appraised for something other than their actual quality? Wow, shocker
Actually, it's just Transformers 2. You'll see. "G.I. Joe" could turn the patriotic-sheen from the cartoons up to eleven but unless Cobra Commander whips off his mask to reveal a full-bearded Muslim who then cackles maniacally about how he might never have gotten this far without the election of Barack Obama it STILL wouldn't be "pro-America" enough for `em. "Terminator 4" they'll hate once they notice that "Stay the course" line in the trailers. Transformers and Michael Bay movies in general are the only films left with the perfect mix of brainlessness and empty faux-patriotic blather to satiate what now passes for the "conservative" film bloc. Remember, this is the audience that hates "The Kingdom" – the most pro-America anti-terrorist action film since at least Black Hawk Down because of a handful of thoughtful lines at the end.
Here's an idea. How about YOU man up and go make it yourself? Or would that be too much work?
These two tools can have my 10 bucks when they pull it from my cold, dead hands.
Boycott Ron, Tom and any company that will touch them. And tell your friends so they can do likewise.
Is it PC to ask if these guys are a modern incarnation of Berlin Betty?
Video-hungry Hollywood stars are always endorsing Obama and other weird causes. But wouldn’t it be really nice if they made apologetic follow-ups? “Hi this is Ron Howard. I endorsed Obama, but now I’m sorry that all you Americans are either unemployed or killing yourselves with taxes.”
Just an idea.
I just wonder how much Hanks spends on his straight perms.
"Hi this is Jane Fonda. I opposed the US in the Vietnam War, but didn't realize that the U.S. defeat would result in massive genocide in Cambodia. My bad."
Not gonna happen. One reason for being on the left is you never have to take responsibility for anything.
So am I.
Not. A. Dime!
You said so yourself: "politics used to be politics, and not a way of life."
It is now. That's why I said before. Not. One. Dime!
BTW: I go out with my family. Really. Just not to the theater. Two kids under the age of three keep the theater out of reach for us.
Great post.
Hollywood simply thinks that a hero is someone who rocks the boat. When it's a troublemaker, they are infatuated with his/her edginess and rockstardom. When it's a social crusader for the issue du jour, they champion that person's "brave" righteousness. It all boils down to the same tired, phony, liberal sentiment of the past fifty years: Counter-culturalism.
It's more brave to stand up in front of the country and say that the old ways are best, because the Constitution is still the ideal authority. Now there's an edgy concept.
Also, a while back the Texas legislature wanted to take a vote to induct Earl Campbell as a Texas hero. Even passionate Houston Oilers fans like my parents had a problem equating him with real Texas heroes like Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston. I love football and I love Earl Campbell, but I'm glad the vote was shot down.
You are so right. Being a Democrat and a Socialist means never having to say you are sorry.
The last movie I saw in the theater was Casino Royale.
The only thing I'm interested in seeing in the near future is Up.
Spot on. I loved how when interviewing inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen they asked him what he thought of Lindsay Lohan, Brit Spears, et al, he said, he had no idea who they were, only knowing a few of their names, but no clue as to what they did.
Wonderful.
And like he said, tens of thousands of jobs, really great, fascinating, rewarding jobs in science go unfilled each year, because young people are not learning science and are not inspired to by our culture any more. Instead the number one choice of vocation for young people when they 'grow up' is to be, not an astronaut, doctor, scientist, teacher, but a celebrity.
I don't think we're hopeless yet, but then again…
I haven't seen most new flicks either, except the odd exception, Casino Royale, LOTR, Star Wars, simply because they are big screen flicks. I know I can rent them, but I want the theater experience. With that said, I don't see everything that comes out, surely not. Like I don't read every book that gets published, nor should anyone. You've got to have selection, otherwise, you're just a bin for everything. Ya gots to have selection!
I think voting with the pocketbook is one of the most effective ways to fight back. Look at what's happening to newspapers. It's not the internet, it's the bias that are killing them. If it was the net, they would have died 10 years ago. I used to love getting the NYT on Sunday and reading it to my morning coffee and some classical music on the radio, or in the days of Firing Line, to good ol' Bill firing away on PBS.
But PBS is gone, Bill's gone, and so is the NYT. All are dead in my opinion. Sad, but, as far as NYT is concerned, I can't read a paper that illustrated with a diagram the vulnerable spots on our soldiers' armor, displaying, essentially how to kill them. That was the last straw in a long line of straws. NYT you shall never see the shine from my coinage again, ever.
For entertainers, I say, vote with your pocketbook.
Nothing hurts a celebrity more than lack of it.
cool.. do we at least get an uRN
I will if you fund it.
You got it.
I haven't read either… and don't plan to. Does Brown have a real issue with Christianity or is he just wanting to make money?
2 Tim 4:3 tells us "For the time will come when people will not tolerate healthy doctrine, but with itching ears will surround themselves with teachers who cater to their people's own desires."
But with Apollo 13, you deprive actors like Gary Sinise and Kevin Bacon of their residuals. I guess it's a glass half-empty or half-full thing.
Sorry if this appears twice.
I think so, but they're not A-list actors so the media doesn't care. I'm a huge fan of character actors, people like Christopher Walken, Stephen Tobolowski, etc. I have no idea what their politics are!

Sorry Brother, we're in Hard Times you only get a paper bag but it's made out of the NY or LA Times. You get your choice. That's the best I can do.
I go to the theater to watch big movies full of explosions, chases and effects. This year I plan to see Wolverine, Star Trek and Harry Potter. All others wait for the DVD. But in the case of Angels and Demons, forget it – I don't mind playing a bit fast and loose with history but only if you are Bill and Ted. Dan Brown et al takes all that bunkum seriously.
Hollywood hypocrites, the lot of them. Risk a golden hair on their heads, I don’t think so. We’ll be the ones swimming in the glorious egalitarian utopia not the sainted thespians and the chosen political ilk.
I'm surprised at how stupid people that run sites like this can be.
I really shouldn't be, seeing as most neo-cons tend to take all their advice from the likes of Fox & Friends.
Anyways, I didn't realy plan on seeing this movie since I'm not a big Dan Brown fan, but I will now.
And, you guys are retarded if you think boycotting this movie will do anything, considering that Hanks already has his pay day.
Oh yeah. Where is the mass exodus of retar — I mean Conservatives that I was promised when Obama/The AntiChrist was elected?
It appears there may have been an mass exodus of your brain cells–unless your condition is congenital. My advice: don't wait for the government to take over health care before you get you brain scan.
I still say the only way to address Hollywood's Leftism and the destruction that comes from supporting the Socialist Democrats (these people are NOTHING like JFK and HST! and should change their name to reflect their European idealism) is to DEFUND them. Even if you WANT to see a film with Tom Hanks in it — show some spine. DON'T GO! Don't rent it on DVD; don't rent it on Direct TV or On Demand. IGNORE THE FILM. Like most of Sean Penn's films are ignored. What's interesting is how well the Social Democrats play hardball and how poorly the rest of us play even softball. It doesn't cost us a dime to boycott Lefties, yet most of us refuse to do it. Rely on BH (used to be DHP) to say if a film is propaganda and if it is, even if you want to see the movie, refuse to go and be insulted. Believe me, the Social Democrats did not go to see "Fireproof" or "Passion of the Christ".
Hey, Mr. Liberal…
I know that this might be nitpicking (it has little to do with the substance of your comment) – but I'm a schoolteacher and work daily with kids who are mentally handicapped. I have a severely retarded brother-in-law. If you're going to be an asinine, vitriolic liberal, can't you use politically correct terms? Or don't those apply to you?
Sure, conservatives get all their advice from Fox and Friends. (Guffaw! Original!) Yeah, we're all fundamentalist Bible misinterpreters who think the President is the devil incarnate. (I'm rolling!) All right, we're planning a giant, organized boycott over a dumb movie based upon a poorly written book. (It's TOO MUCH!) You're a real comedian, guy.
And thanks to your word choice, it's apparent that you're also a complete ignoramus.
If these people had brains, they would be more dangerous.
It's obvious that as Opie ages, he's turning into Curly Howard. One good stooge deserves another
I thought ANGELS & DEMONS was dull. I have no intention of seeing the movie. And I fell asleep during THE DAVINCI CODE. Ron Howard hasn't made a good movie in ages and I could care less about his political beliefs.
http://the100mostannoyingthings.blogspot.com/
The movies that I see in the theatre have to be extraordinary. Movies are expensive. If you have kids, you're talking about $130.00 for a single evening. (You either bring the kids, or pay for a babysitter.) I can rent movies when they come out on DVD or buy them in the $5.00 bin. Why go to the movies?
Well, we all stood in line to see The Lord Of the Rings, all three of them. We stood in line to see Narnia. We stood in line (and plan to stand in line this summer) to see Harry Potter. We know that each of those films respect our beliefs and our values, and yet deliver a fabulous two hours of eye-candy right along with all the goodness. So that's the secret, I think: Great values, great story, great eye-candy. I'll pull out my thin little pocketbook for that. Am I going to do that for Angels and Demons? Ha, ha, ha.
I give you New Line Pictures, MrLiberal. Once the powerhouse that produced Lord of the Rings, they threw all they had into the athiest, anti-Christian, deliberately anti-Narnia movie called "The Golden Compass."
They bankrupted themselves, because we all stayed home and made sure to tell our friends and neighbors to stay home too. New Line pictures is all gone, there will be no more athiest movies in the "His Dark Materials" series, and we all await eagerly the next "Harry Potter" film. Score one for the good guys.
Ron Howard is as bald as a cue ball. I saw a picture of him once without a hat.
I either wait for PPV or Encore to run a movie. I've found in the long run this has saved me many bucks on lousy movies. And lousy movies seem to outnumber good ones. And I dont miss sitting in theater seats that are much too small for me, nor do I miss the running commentary from the row behind me. I did like Ghost Rider though, and Iron Man and Dark Knight were pretty good. But my main source of movies is TCM. I just enjoy the old movies more that current ones.
Opie! Opie! Aunt Bea is rolling in her grave!
John Ford's movies are actually quite liberal. His treatment of Native Americans is almost always sympathetic — Fort Apache essentially says that there might have been peace between the tribes and the US government except for the greed and stupidity of the US. And it was Ford who stood up to CB deMille when the latter was fighting to eject "communists" from the DGA.
"If it has been demonstrated that I have been willing to die for a ‘Mormon,’ I am bold to declare before Heaven that I am just as ready to die in defending the rights of a Presbyterian, a Baptist, or a good man of any other denomination; for the same principle which would trample upon the rights of the Latter-day Saints would trample upon the rights of the Roman Catholics, or of any other denomination who may be unpopular and too weak to defend themselves."
Joseph Smith Jr.
It is all about money, Hollywood doesn't care who they attack or defame if there is a little money to be made!!!!!!
It's why I stopped going to the movies years ago.
I don't pay for things I don't support.
Ron has lost his way and Tom has lost his B**ls. Too bad, they have talent but then so do plenty of other entertainers, which BTW, they forgot they were.
I read A & D before DaVinci came out and before I had heard anything about Dan Brown. I kept thinking this is the stupidest book, maybe it will turn out to be some sort of dream, etc., the reason it was so historically incorrect. I kept reading, waiting to find out when it would explain itself, i.e. get better, but, alas, it never did. I am not Catholic, but if I was, I'd be highly offended. I found much of it offensive even being billed as "fiction." Pass. As far as Ron goes, his stupid video this past fall on Funny or Die, (of course Will Ferrell's site), clued me into just how ideologically wrecked The Opster really is.
Hey MR.Liberal, Tom Hanks has had alot of pay-days big ones at that. That's possible in a Free Capitalistic Country. The USofA isn't so bad after all huh. I realize it's not as sublime as the likes of Cuba and Venezula or some other paradise that lives in the fantasy life of the Liberal mind-set, but Hey we do what we can do here. Don't wait for us to exit America. We leave all that nonsense to the Streisands, Baldwins and the Depps and all those other Faux Fair Weather Americans. President Obama isn't the Anti-Christ Anti-American maybe but not the Anti-Christ, at least not yet. You Liberals might want to advise your Savior that if he bows any lower when he meets the Middle -Eastern leaders . He might have to change his stance on Gay Marriage. Just a heads-up. No pun intended
Actually "The Golden Compass" made money. It made $260 million outside of the US, other countries go to movies also. New Line sold off too many offshore rights on that film and had other underperforming films like Rush Hour 3 and so had to merge with Warner Brothers.
Well said.
So when will we be getting our monthly 'spread the wealth around' checks from the wealthy Ron Howard and Tom Hanks, as well as, all the other wealthy Hollywoodites who are celebrating their President Obama's promise of change?
I agree. Besides I can't think of two more boring Hollywood members than Buffy Wilson and Opie Cunninghan.
So I've seen Tom Hanks in church, walking up to the tomb of Christ, cross himself and kiss the tomb. This is what Orthodox Christians do on Great Friday. I find it disturbing that he can come into church, kiss icons, participate in a 2,000 year old religious ceremony, then spout off like he does. Who is the REAL Tom Hanks?
I have to go back to Bosom Buddies to watch anything by the sanctimonious and self-righteous Mr. Hanks.
Well, somebody has to say it: Stupid is as stupid does.
Please. This is an insult to the Great Stooge. Opie couldn't carry Curly's jock strap.
Just say no. These people use the money you pay to see them against you. This is what boycotts are for.
Download the film for free and keep your $$ in your pocket. If they can hustle us we can hustle them. Quid pro quo baby quid pro quo.
Believe it or not Tom Hanks became a Christian before he had his big break in Hollywood. Then Hollywood got a hold of him and, in my humble opinion, he sold his very soul to tinsel town. Which is the same thing as selling your soul to the Devil when you think about it. I really think Tom Hanks is doing everything in his power now to destroy the Christian faith that he once adhered to. Since falling away from his Christian faith, and especially in the last few years, he seems "hell" bent on trying to destroy the very foundation of Christian truth which is contained in the Bible. So now he resorts to deviously distorting and twisting the Bible for his own purposes and ill gotten gain, and hoping, in my opinion, to destroy the very fabric of "true" Christianity in the process. When he fell away he REALLY fell away. It's sad what money, fame, and idol worship can do to a person if you let it eh?
I pray that he'll see the error of his ways and come back to the Faith he once held; and unfortunately, is now trying to destroy apparently. God is still willing to forgive and welcome him back but he has to take the first step and acknowledge the errors of his ways and repent of his sins and his apostasy. I hope it's not too late in his case. When the Devil gets a hold of you he's not willing to easily let go.
Meh, not much of a sacrifice for me to miss the film, really….. I read the book, and I wish I hadn't. I agree with other posters here – I don't object to Brown's attack on Christianity (they're really a dime a dozen these days, aren't they?) nearly as much as I was bored to tears by his sorry attempt at mystery. I got sick of knowing what was going to happen 300 pages in advance, while the main character (a supposed "expert") ran around in circles looking for the next clue. JK Rowling always kept me guessing – Dan Brown could learn a few lessons from her.
So nice that I don't have to resort to piracy in order to avoid paying to get my face rubbed in Hollywood's political dirt – I can just skip the movie altogether. Huzzah!
The honest-to-goodness truth is that most of the movies I would boycott for political reasons aren't really that great as films in the first place. This is not always true (I enjoyed aspects of V for Vendetta even though I knew going in that the politics would be offensive to me), but it usually is. Point being, if you do everything in your power to make a GREAT MOVIE, odds are it will be absent the cheap political shots that might drive away a portion of your audience. In fact, if you look at the movies that are commonly pointed to as examples of conservative film, the directors are surprised by that label and often say they intended no such context. They just made a good film, and a largely center-right audience saw their own values reflected back on them.
So…. that wasn't really your exactly question, but I still think it addresses what attracts people to movies and why people might otherwise avoid them.
"Imagine Buller-Lytton writing a D&D manual and you get the feel of it."
Thank you. That's the best description, bar none, of Brown's works that I've ever read.
Geez, guys, we need to hold our trolls to higher standards around here. If they're going to take up our board space and bandwidth, we should at least get some _clever_ whining and name-calling out of it.

Here's why Clint Howard is so much cooler than his brother:
I don’t think that endorsing anyone should weigh on anyone else. My opinion is my opinion and I’m very proud of my vote—my support to the two candidates that I do support. But an official endorsement I think is a little bit out of bounds for an actor. That’s just my own personal opinion. But I really do honestly believe that the two candidates that I am going to vote for—he’s going to be a great president and she’s going to be a great vice president.

Your assertion rejects the political realities involved that FOX as a whole must contend with in dealing with Hollywood, they're neither a financial juggernaut nor a virtual monopoly thus must play Hollywood's tune. 77% of contributions going Democrat actually seems on the low side for an industry that's over 95% liberal.
Remember this when you're ready for your membership in the Hair Club for Men.
Looking at that photo, either Ronnie has an incredibly small head or Hanks has got one massive cranium…not full of intelligence but BS.
