REVIEW: ‘Shutter Island’ Keeps Audiences Guessing
by Darin MillerIs it better to live as a monster or to die as a good man? It’s a central question revealingly asked only at the end of an emotional ride in Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese’s latest film, “Shutter Island.” Set in 1954, Leonardo DiCaprio leads a strong cast as Federal Marshall Teddy Daniels, who visits a mental hospital while investigating the disappearance of a brutal female inmate. Ashecliffe Hospital, located at a former Civil War fortress on Shutter Island off of Boston’s harbor, is a haunting facility that Daniels believes is a cover for government-funded mind control experimentation. The fact that Daniels saw the horrors of such scientific experimentation as a soldier during World War II, and that the man responsible the death of his wife (Michelle Williams) is a resident of the mysterious institution spur his investigation, lending personal drive to his federal orders.

But as migraine-fueled hallucinations intensify and the administration become increasingly secretive and restrictive, Teddy’s investigation forces him to confront the truth that the island’s doctors depict. And it’s ultimately left to the audience to decide what truly happened on Shutter Island.
Set against the backdrop of a hurricane, nightmares are more terrific, sunshine more comforting—and scarce. Daniels and his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) arrive at Shutter Island to an oppressive symphonic score making the gray skies and dreary buildings exaggeratedly eerie. But for the rest of the film, music plays masterfully to emphasize mystery—or in the film’s most tragic moment, its absence and the cheerful chirping of birds accentuate the heavy emotions of the moment, allowing audiences to focus solely on the performances of DiCaprio and Williams. Supported by a strong cast, “Shutter Island” has had the best acting I’ve seen in a film so far this year, and I doubt it will soon be beat.
Scorsese is a master director, regardless of what my fellow Big Hollywood writer Ben Shapiro says (though he said it well enough that I nearly agreed with him). Scenes occurring in a concentration camp, dream sequences involving talking dead and characters that spring bloody leaks or collapse in ashes, haunting settings in a dilapidated Civil War fortress—Scorsese emphasizes the beauty in the weird and terrible, drawing audiences further into the film instead of pushing viewers away from the strange setting and circumstances.
The tragedy in “Shutter Island” is that Laeta Kalogridis’ adapted script brings Daniels’ investigation to a climax, then forces the audience to listen to an explanation of complex mind games before the truth is truly revealed. Films must occasionally tell, especially when books are adapted, but the “rule of four” is entirely unsolvable on screen. To Kalogridis’ credit, the scene passes quickly, using flashback to tell as much as possible.
“Shutter Island” is a dark story, with rare moments of comedy or happiness. While not a nail-biting thriller, it is an enjoyable film sure to keep viewers in the dark to the very end, and keep them talking after.

At first i thought they pushed back the release date because it wasn't very good. Now I think they want to be the first Oscar candidate for next season.
I was blown away. It's refreshing to see Hollywood taking it's craft seriously.
Not a film you will readily forget or want to, I enjoyed this caper immensely while contemplating my sanity.
For the sweet merciful love of heaven, DiCaprio- the fedora does NOT sit directly on your head!
Seriously!
Other than that, sounds like it might be worth a look.
Saw it last night, thought it was one of the worst movies I ever saw.
Acting was OK, plot or lack of it was obvious, cineamatography was awful, ending well it never really ended.
Sounds like a future DVD purchase. What I'm looking forward to is the new Alice flic in 3D. Depp might be politically retarded, but the mo-fo can act his balls off. The rest of the cast is awesome too.

It looks really good, but I'm boycotting it. If Scorsese wants me to line his pockets, he needs to take his name off of the Polanski petition first.
I avoided "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" for the same reason.
Federal Marshal, only one "L" in Marshal.
It was good, but not great. I think I spotted the 'shocker' way too early. But production design and cinematography are fantastic, it has a great creepy feel & pace throughout. Very nice to see Sir Ben doing something worthy of his talents instead of the dreck he seems to take a lot, and without spoiling anything, there's a couple of awesome cameos…
Knowing Martin Scorsese's love of Val Lewton movies, I was really excited about seeing SHUTTER ISLAND. The trailer featured shots reminiscent of ISLE OF THE DEAD, and Scorsese said in interviews that he was making an ode to Hitchcock, so I figured this would be Scorsese right in the pocket, mixing suspense and horror, something he hasn't done since his remake of CAPE FEAR.
There's a lot to like about SHUTTER ISLAND, the dream sequences are full of striking images and creepy moments. The horror in the movie is about atmosphere, which I appreciated in a world where cheap boo-scares qualify as scary. Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo wear fedora hats, smoke cigarettes and talk in tough-guy cop lingo as they investigate the mysterious goings-on at a mental asylum on an island, where as you may have guessed, nothing is as it seems. The performances are all interesting, with some great scenes featuring Jackie Earle Hailey, Michelle Williams, and Elias "Casey Jones" Koteas (who looks eerily similar to Robert De Niro here). Even though it delves into cliche at times, the paranoid investigation that DiCaprio's character leads kept my interest.
The problem with SHUTTER ISLAND is that you've seen it all before. To compare it to other movies would spoil the movie, but I can list off a series of them that it is very similar to, and there are crucial plot-points that involve a lot of cliched nonsense that hurt the movie's credibility. The film is well-made and compelling, and I was really caught up in it, but once the seams started to unravel I realized I was watching a re-hash of other movies. It's just too familiar. When I got home from seeing it, my roommate asked me how it was, and he didn't mind me spoiling anything (don't worry, I won't do so here) and when I started to talk about it, he pretty much managed to guess the major plot points on his own, which should illustrate how unremarkable the story is. SHUTTER ISLAND is a well-made film that people who don't watch a lot of movies are going to eat up with a big smile, and that's great. But for everyone else, it's a well-made movie that offers very little outside of striking images and sequences that are woven into an unremarkable plot that would've been great, had it been dreamed up and realized back when Hitchcock and Lewton were still alive and in the game.
I saw this movie last night, and athough there are things I didn't like, all in all, I really enjoyed it. Partly off the subject … but honestly I've never understood the criticism "you've seen it all before." Novelty does have some value; but honestly, not much, IMHO; and novelty for the sake of novelty doesn't really have a lot of appeal to me at all. Good storylining, good scripting, good cinematography, good casting, good acting, and more, are all so much more important. Shutter Island … like so many other good movies … are such because of all kinds of things that really build on what has been learned about the craft of movies – what works and what doesn't. For me … Shutter Island definitely works. Shoot I might just go see it again while it's still on the big screen around here.
Just got home from seeing it. I thought it was pretty good. Not as creepy and scary as advertised, but still entertaining nonetheless. As for figuring it out, I kind of did . . . and then I didn't . . . I'll just leave it at that. There were some pretty haunting parts to it and it was pretty good.
And there was no Bush bashing, so that's always a plus! LOL!
That's exactly what I was thinking >_< After reading the BH article on fedora etiquette, these hats look like dead fish on their heads. It could just be the angle. I doubt it.
Leonardo DiCaprio in that photo looks like he is wearing his fathers clothes…..
I have started thinking like M. Night Shyamalan when I watch movies. I start making a list of all directions the plot could go in, then start picking out the most twisted ones. I am proud to say, I was able to figure this one out.
You my fellow citizen are a hater, movie was phenomenal, great plot, great story line and it had everyone on the edge of their seat.
LMAO, No Bush Bashing, OMG… Could this be a start of a trend ? No more Bush to bash, and they will never produce anything that bashes the Dear Leader, Barack Hussain Obama (Allah's peace on his name), so maybe they will start to make good movies again. ;0)
Leo always looks like he's wearing his father's clothes. Did not love it.
that's the trouble with DiCaprio, He always looks like he's wearing his father's clothes. He looked that way in Revolutionary Road too.
I saw this film Saturday night, and I thought it was incredibly dull. I was glad that I read the book, otherwise I would have been confused during those periods when my eyelids fell. I will agree that I thought that DiCaprio was actually very good in his role, but other than that, I thought the movie was 20 minutes too long, too plodding, too much talky-talky in the middle. I say wait for DVD.
LOL! Here's to that! But I won't hold my breath.
You know I get it that Leo looks young and he's not exactly built like The Rock. And I'm no "fangirl" either (he's got his head too far up Al Gore's butt. Plus I'm a grown woman). But I do think he's a good actor and I appreciate that he's trying to take on more mature roles and get out of the "I must play a kid forever" slump that many similar actors and actresses find themselves in. I'm a short adult – 5'1". I get the feeling that many people don't initially take me seriouslyt because of my size, because I don't look like an adult. When I wear a suit I probably look like I'm in my mother's clothes.
But for me, that "criticism" alone without more is not a good critcism. It's just picking on someone's physical differences.
I thought Leo did very well and has done well in the more mature roles he's taken on. I don't like his politics, but I appreciate his talent.
Progressives on the make for more $$$$$ scorsece and leo; another the government is the culprit flick ie the departed, the aviator, etc. and scorsece went to Cardinal Hayes HS in the Bronx what a disgrace.
I saw this last nite and I thoroughly enjoyed it, save the gimmicky Kinglsey admission at the end. I found the ending though truthful which made it hearty breaking also.
its a freaking movie who gives a crap about dipshit bush? that moron has millions and didnt give a crap about you and me anyway.. here he is drinking alot again!
Went to see it last night and thought if was terrific. Great acting by everyone, but Leo really hit it out of the park. Go see it.
Leo will next play John Wayne's role in a remake of any of his movies. If you don't look the part then you can expect criticizing.
He does not look like a police detective. He looks like he is wearing his father's clothes.
Ugh, horrible. Saw this last night and the theater was packed. The audience was far from delighted as the overall expression was "What was that all about?" DiCaprio is nothing but a one way actor anymore. Where is the acting talent we saw in Gilbert Grape? Seen the Departed, Blood Diamond or Body of Lies? Insert that character into this movie and you get the picture. This was hands down Martin Scorseses' worst movie yet. Think I'm wrong or as someone stated earlier a "hater" this thing will be down 70% next weekend. Two thumbs down.
I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, and I’m sure I’ll like it even more upon second viewing. It was well directed, smartly paced, and the atmosphere was masterfully crafted, right down to the look of the film itself. The only big problem for me was DiCaprio, who just didn’t fit the role. His obviously fake accent was distracting, and I caught him acting way too often.
And yes, the post-climactic explanation is a bit clunky. If Scorsese really was trying to emulate Hitchcock, he should’ve taken another look at Psycho, which did essentially the same thing more effectively.
what exactly is politically retarded? if you mean stupid, just say stupid. That way no one gets hurt.
Didn't think it was that good.
As a psychological drama, I knew from the jump what the "surprise" had to be. Opening scene where Dicaprio physical sickness on the boat was the metaphor for his psycho illness. Sorry, forgot the spoiler alert.
The rest was convoluted, with the obligatory red herrings and straw men antagonists, but the transformation of the character's clothing and physical appearance removed any doubt about the outcome halfway through.
Wish I would have seen "Hurt Locker" instead.

I've always been a big Scorsese fan but I was a little disappointed with this one. Great filmaker- not a great storyteller.
Adapting a book like this is knowing what to pare away, and how to consolidate what's left so that the audience has a sense of suspense – paranoia, even – something that "The Silence of the Lambs" did very well. I think the film completely missed the escalating suspense of SOTL, or the (for lack of a better phrase) psychological claustrophobia that creeps in with a film SI very much reminded me of, "Angel Heart". I never felt the constricting net, and not just because I had read the book – I read SOTL before I saw the film as well, and was, in the words of my young ones "totally creeped out".
I thought the flashbacks were beautifully done, some of the design extraordinary to look at (though the green screen was disconcerting); as for the performances, the ones worth watching were the smaller ones, Jackie Earle Haley, Bridget Kearns and Michelle Williams.
This was a stinker. There was no ending. This is a stupid waste of time. I demanded and received a refund of my ticket price from the theatre. I should have demanded a refund from Scorsese and DeCaprio.
Production design! Are you kidding?
I liked the movie but the "green screen" back drops were terrible, BUT- I'm wondering if Scorsese purposefully wanted the Ocean and Forest back drops to look so fake? I wonder if those scenes were clues to the eventual plot resolution?! If so, then in retrospect- it was brilliant!
This was a really god-awful movie. Those that believe that this movie comes even within a 1000 miles of Hitchcock are on crack. The entire movie was a WTF is going on moment. And the end was so telegraphed it was amateur hour.
Yes, the production design was great. It contributed hugely to the overall atmosphere IMHO. I thought the institution looked fantastic–totally sold the "creepy house of mystery" for me. (and the chase through the staircase was one of the best sequences in the film) Funny, I didn't get a strong green screen sense–it all looked real to me, and since it was shot on location I assumed it all was real.
It's not mere physical differences that's being objected to. He may be a good actor, but he doesn't have the kind of screen persona and presence that would allow him to wear those clothes without them looking fake on him.

Who gives away the last line of the movie in the first line of their review. You have to write a review under the assumption that not everyone has watched the movie. Thank God I have already seen the movie or I would be pissed. Fail.
arg, the green screen scenes were brutal. Why would a man with essentially limitless financial resources allow for horrible green screen backdrops to be in his movie. The Boat, the Sky, the Hallway durring the rain, the clifs. arg.

I don't see the twist, rather how brain washing works – if you believe Leo was patient of the clinic since ever, you might be a patient too?
