Rammstein: Teutonic Metal Gods Conquer America?
by Daniel KalderFor most non-Teutons the idea of German rock is not very appealing. The fatherland of Bach and Beethoven may well have produced many interesting experimental groups (Kraftwerk, Einstürzende Neubauten etc) but on a global, top 40 level it’s an entirely different matter. Consider:
1) The Scorpions- hair metal popular in the 80s, approximately as good as Winger.
2) KMFDM- plodding industrial metal from the late 80s/early90s.
3) That Nena chick of ‘99 luftballons’ fame.

In short, a roster of acts so unnecessary that we could safely consign them to the same dark abyss as Croatian thrash or Russian hip hop and the human race would be none the poorer for it. And yet fortunately for the glory of popular Deustche musik this is not the end of the story- for in the mid 90s what rough beast slouched towards Germany to be born? Breathing flames and reveling in death and all manner of deviancy, its name was Rammstein.
Formed in the early 1990s by veterans of several crap East German groups, Rammstein consisted of six men in their 30s who had grown up under communism. They took their name from Ramstein, a US military base where a terrible disaster had occurred during an air show in 1988, adding an extra ‘m’ to dislocate it slightly. With the Berlin Wall fallen, the band was now liberated to steal as many sounds and ideas as they desired. These included elements of classic heavy metal, industrial metal and gothic synth pop such as Depeche Mode; not to mention liberal appropriations from Laibach, a Slovenian group fascinated by the links between mass culture, pop music and totalitarianism. (If you have a few minutes I recommend you watch Laibach’s reinterpretations of Queen’s One Vision and Opus’ Life is Life: the originals will never sound the same again.)
From Laibach, Rammstein also stole the cross as a symbol, a collectivist ethos, and a fondness for flirting with totalitarian imagery. Most strikingly of all Rammstein’s singer Till Lindemann’s vocal style ‘borrowed’ heavily from Milan Fras’ absurdly deep bass snarl. As Laibach did not believe in ‘originality’ they did not complain; and as Rammstein were a much better band, they did not compete either.
But Rammstein also introduced elements hitherto absent from hard rock, such as lyrics informed by German romanticism (decadent and otherwise), and elements of martial music. Rammstein thoroughly embraced their national identity and this unabashed ‘Germanness’ became key to their success- disciplined, ultra precise drumming, grinding riffs played by two guitars in perfect synchronicity, futuristic synths, a surprising ear for melody and sturm und drang lyrics sung entirely in German, with every guttural sound emphasized, and every ‘R’ rolled almost to the point of parody. On the last tour two members even wore lederhosen. Rammstein had thus revealed that heavy metal in its ideal form was not Anglo-American but Germanic, and having done so built a massive fan base in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
–
Rammstein’s live shows are legendary. The band loves fire: walls of flame; fire-breathing; self-immolation, you name it. At the center of this grandiose spectacle however stands front-man Till Linemann wearing a look of profound suffering on his face, as if he is being martyred every night. When he’s not in pain he inflicts it, usually upon the keyboard player, Flake, who is as lanky and skinny as Lindemann is huge. On Rammstein’s last tour, Lindemann roasted Flake alive in a giant cauldron while singing an ode to the German cannibal Armen Meiwes. Flake was also Lindemann’s victim in simulated male rapes that took place on a nightly basis during the band’s tours of the late 90s and early 2000s (I shall spare you the link.) And yet however outrageous that sounds, Rammstein’s provocations are always informed by an ultra-dry, ultra-black German humor.
Unsurprisingly, Rammstein’s love of shock tactics has embroiled the band in numerous scandals. Their first album cover was an outrageous piece of totalitarian homoerotic camp, depicting the band as oiled, muscular Übermenschen stripped to the waist, standing in front of a giant flower (I remember wondering whether I had made a terrible mistake the day I bought it on cassette in Moscow’s Gorbushka market). German music critics accused them of being Nazis. Delighted, the band then used footage from Leni Riefenstahl’s Olympia in the video for their cover of Depeche Mode’s Stripped. Later however Rammstein would insist that they were perplexed by all the Nazi hullabaloo- was it not obvious that they were fervent leftists? After all on their 3rd album ‘Mutter’ (the one with the dead baby on the cover) they had recorded a song entitled Links 234. Now admittedly this is simply the march ‘Left 2, 3, 4’ sung in German and the video showed thousands of ants stamping around in militaristic fashion, even saluting grainy black and white footage of the lead singer. But Rammstein insisted that it was a song of praise for left ideas, and really meant ‘forward with leftism’, or some other such nonsense. Whether the band’s members were being naïve, humorous or archly ironic, none of the other songs on the album were notably left in orientation (‘Zwitter’ was a song about a hermaphrodite in love with him/herself, ‘Rein Raus’ a spectacularly blatant metaphor for sexual intercourse).
It was perhaps a different set of scandals that stung the band more. The Columbine massacre shooters were big Rammstein fans, and around the same time as that tragedy members of the band were arrested in Massachusetts when Lindemann prepared to rape Flake on stage with an ejaculating dildo. Clearly that experience left a bad taste in the mouth, because Rammstein have never returned stateside. Indeed the band has had a troubled history with the USA. On their second release Sensucht (Longing), they succumbed to record company pressure, recording some embarrassing English language versions of selected songs. Although Rammstein swore never to do this again, they have since played with the English language on tracks such as Amerika and Pussy (find that video yourself). Now however there is a political undercurrent to their use of English- admittedly it is a tedious, Coca Cola bashing, anti-globalization kind of undercurrent, but then, nobody’s perfect.
–
At the end of October Rammstein released their sixth record ‘Liebe ist fur alle da’ (Love is there for everyone). The record goes nowhere new, Rammstein choosing instead to elaborate upon the sonic and thematic realm they have made their own. However this lack of innovation is no weakness, and from the very first track ‘Rammlied’ all memories of Rosenrot, their wretched fifth album, are dispelled. ‘Liebe..’ is their heaviest release in years, faster, darker and more punishing, a brutal noise made by ageing men striving to prove they can still crush their peers, and succeeding. It is the sound of six Germans on the march, six Germans out to conquer, six Germans intent on proving that they reign supreme over the heavy metal reich.
The plan seems to have worked. Liebe entered the charts at #1 in multiple countries; # 16 in the UK and most remarkably of all- #13 in the Billboard Hot 200. As a Briton, I am already accustomed to the fact that Rammstein have superseded the accomplishments of metal bands from the UK, in much the same way I know that Germany has a superior infrastructure, stronger industrial base and higher standard of living than my homeland. And now with Rammstein’s unprecedented assault on the American charts, will all you patriotic Americans begin to feel that you are living inside a Philip K. Dick style parallel universe? Are Slayer, Metallica, Mastodon et al about to surrender before the might of their Teutonic metal masters? Is this the latest sign of what the perpetually grinning Fareed Zakaria- a man who looks as though he just swallowed a live hamster and is terribly pleased with himself for this achievement- calls ‘the Post- American World’?
Ich don’t think so. But it might mean that Rammstein will come here on tour. And as someone who has seen the band live four times in three different countries I can reassure you that that would be a very good thing indeed. Unless you don’t like middle-aged East German provocateurs bludgeoning you to death with heavy music, that is. Then you might want to consider staying home, and play your Colbie Caillat records instead. I don’t know- whatever turns you on.
Auf Wiedersehen!

Just as soon as I'm appointed ruler of the free world I'm going to ban all of this crappy music.
They are one of my favorite bands. I listen to them when working out! Their Live in Berlin DVD is off the hook. Hirate Mich!
Rammstein makes me think of college and working at the campus radio station. Rammstein was one of our more popular artists.
And what's wrong with KMFDM?
Kit, the way things seem to be headed that may be a very small realm indeed.
At my advanced age I suspect that I am not qualified to have an opinion on todays
music let alone Germany's version of rock music. I haven't read the article on
Hasselhoff to perform in Berlin and other than I know he is popular over there
I'm not sure German music in general is in a good place right now.
I may vote with you Kit.
Wow Kalder your homophobic lashing of a kraut band was impressive. Your diatribe even has my heavy metal listening son reevaluating his admiration of this band, introduced to him by his friend stationed in Germany. Please don't trash Lordi with your much loved blog and amerocentrism, or I won't let you have the red crayon.
So, "Du Hast" Rammstein?
Eh. Give me the crazy lads from Leipzig called Die Prinzen any day–anyone who agrees with Rush Limbaugh about feminism and the Oprahization of America (as I do) can appreciate "Frauen sind die neuen Männer", the title track of their latest album.
In my opinion, German metal is best sung in German because I don't speak German and all I can judge by is: "wow, that sounds cool!" I suspect, much like listening to Calle 13, if I could understand Rammstein's lyrics, I in all my prudery, would have a heart attack and regress to Hanson.
I've seen the fire-breathing though and it's awesome! Much better than Lady Gaga's fire-spouting boobs.

I'm a fan of Rammstein. Don't care for their politics but i don't speak German so I don't care when I listen. I'm a fan of Audioslave as well which three of the members are far lefties but they don't really talk politics in most songs so I can listen to them too. Funny thing is that those three members were also members of Rage against the Machine; super left band and every song is political… can't listen to it.
Now Audioslave disbanded and Rage is back so I'm sticking with my Audioslave collection.

"members of the band were arrested in Massachusetts when Lindemann prepared to rape Flake on stage with an ejaculating dildo."
"it might mean that Rammstein will come here on tour. And as someone who has seen the band live four times in three different countries I can reassure you that that would be a very good thing indeed."
You Brits are still nursing a grudge over the whole Declaration of Independence thing, apparently.
Audioslave in terms of skill was so much better then Rage it's not even scary. Rage had the most over-bloated sense of self-importance of any band in the history of music since "we're bigger then Jesus."
Case in point, listen to Cochise, then turn around and listen to Rage's cover of The Ghost of Tom Joad.
"Flake was also Lindemann’s victim in simulated male rapes that took place on a nightly basis during the band’s tours of the late 90s and early 2000s"
Oh yea, that's some REAL entertainment alright. No wonder the children of the world are becoming desensitized and violent, there are too many entities out there promoting it all.
As far as I'm concerned, Lamb of God and Woe of Tyrants crush Rammstein. And that's just the straightforward thrash metal, not even getting into the Viking metal.
Rammstein RULES. I must say that as an avid metal fan and Conservative, I am thrilled to see this post, and even more thrilled about Daniel Kalder contributing here! I am sure that this post is going to get a billion negative responses from people who have never heard Rammstein and don't like Metal, but I will say this: Metal is one of the most diverse forms of music and some of the most complex and technically proficient artists are purveyors of Metal, not to mention that Heavy Metal fans tend to lean overwhelmingly Conservative. Heavy Metal fans are rigidly individualistic and that is a core tenet of Conservatism.
This site just keeps getting better..
"I am thrilled to see this post, and even more thrilled about Daniel Kalder contributing here!"
Concur.
The Scorpions, a hair metal band from the 80s only as good as Winger? Are you smoking something? Does the name Michael Schenker mean anything to you? To compare the Scorpions to Winger betrays your ignorance.
Wow, you weren't joking about not seeing the original songs in the same way after Laibach grinds the narrative out of them.
Who knew that Opus loved them some totalitarianism?
Ha ha. I was prepared for some really heavy thrash metal and got that mopey stuff, not that I'm a big fan of thrash. Sixth album? That's just laziness. For some nice off the US radar music some might want to YouTube Cerys Matthews. Beautiful with an even lovelier voice. And she's Welsh!
I love it!!! Go Rammstein!!! Make people angry!!!!
New Album is the best!
You know you are getting old when your first inclination is not to listen to the music, but to post that "those boys need a bath".
BTW Winger = Scorps? Lord.
I don't think American bands such as Metallica have anything to worry about with these guys. Talent trumps men assraping one another here. For now.
I first heard Rammstein in Vienna in a very dark and dirty bar. Good times! I bought several tracks when I got back to the states.
All music in Vienna sounded good to me – in the bars, in the stores and on the radio. I miss that place, they really do have an ear for music.
Yeah, I was not sure how to react to that highlighted feature. Was I too clap wildly with glee?
I guess I could have a laugh and say, "back when I was a kid, if a band wanted to shock they bit a head off a bat and spit it into the audience." followed by the old side of me saying "I hope he got a rabies shot."
I adore metal. Some metal. Good metal. IMO this band is commercial crap. But I will not downward thumb your passion.
GREAT PIECE, Daniel! I LOVE Rammstein! From the moment I heard them."Du. Dus Hast. Du Hast Mich." I heard they're psycho on stage as you've said. Something about them being in a rowboat and setting the stage on fire. And I mean really setting the stage on fire. A couple of them, too. Can't be bad. Allow me to share. 18, 429, 534 hits on YouTube for Rammstein's "Du Hast" at last count. And crunchy, just like I like it!

Hitler may not have taken over the world, but when it comes to Rammstein's heavy metal and hardcore German porn, they ARE the Master Race, LOL! See, this is a mistake left-leaning liberals make. They think we Libertarian-leaning Reagan conservatives are driven by the Bible and dreams of a pure white Handmaid's Tale-like future. Rammstein is what drives me. But I know the Bible like John Creasey and Jules Winnfield. Wake up, idiots!
Lastly, Daniel, I beg to differ with you on Nena's "99 Luftballoons." The world would be poorer without it. But you are fully entitled to your opinion, however wrong that opinion may be. In my humble opinion. Again, 6, 410, 893 views on YouTube to date. The intro alone is worth it. Sings like an angel, she does. Even like the German version better than the English. Some singers really come off better in their native language. Like Rammstein, say. Maybe you should reconsider. Again, entitled to your opinion

No mention of Blind Guardian?
Not to make a thread of this (as I have a post pending), but German rock talent is way underestimated, IMHO. This 1983 mega-hit by Peter Schilling I actually like better than the David Bowie original it derived from, and that's saying a lot! Unlike Rammstein's and Nena's music, I prefer the English version to the German. I have absolutely no clue what those Krauts are saying! "Ich bien ein Berliner," that's about it. Anyway, Major Tom's Gotterdammerung.

Kt, there's just some shows you don't take children to. Way back when punk came out, I patronized Boston rock clubs like the Paradise and the Rathskeller, which was like Boston's CBGB's. Saw Wendy O. Williams and The Plasmatics there in 1978. She exposed her breasts with band-aids over her nipples. The stage had a bunch of out-of-place furniture on it too, which you didn't get till she started cutting it all up with a chainsaw at the end.
It's called adult entertainment for a reason. If you know Rammstein does male rape scenes on stage, don't take your kids, okay? But that's MY entertainment! Don't have to go. I can differentiate stage from reality. I knew Jim Morrison wasn't orally copulating with Robby Krieger on stage, or that Ozzy really bit the heads off of bats. Wait a minute…
ha ha I've been a fan of Laibach since 1988.
Heavy metal fans lean overwhelmingly conservative? I'd like to meet your friends :/ In my experience its just the opposite, most heavy metal fans are anti-religion/conservative values which they try shoving down your throat if they find out you dont have the same beliefs as them.
And while Lamb of God is often labled metalcore along with bands like Shadows Fall, Darkest Hour, and even Trivium or Bullet For My Valentine I fail to see the hardcore influence that makes them metalcore, it all just sounds to me like a modern version of Heavy Metal, maybe with some Thrash thrown in.
I just got the latest C.D. last week. As a fan of Rammstein I consider it very poor..
I don't have kids John so it's really not a "personal" worry for me. However; kids will go to these shows with or without their parents permission. If these types of entertainment weren't so easily available then maybe kids would seek out other, milder forms of entertainment. JMO
I was going to make a comment, but I don't think I could possibly trump what you've typed here. Well done.
I think I'll stick with Tyr and Man o' War. Of course I wish they'd back off from the Aesir a little and do some stuff in honor of the Vanir.
Agreed. I have no idea what they are saying, but I like the way it sounds.
ditto
A country that idolizes the Hoff – (as in Hasselhoff) as [gulp] a pop-musician, does not for sure have a single musical bone in the entire country. Things were different when Mozart was doing opium and whatever else, but for sheer lack of imaginative pop or rock, the Deutscheland sure is the fatherland.
Bottom-line: The Germany of today should try and stop making pop/rock. Maybe one of their Turkish rap bands might eventually become "cutting edge". For a hilarious documentary on Germany, watch Jeremy Clarkson's "Meet the Neighbours – Germany" on youtube [you can check it out from Netflix too].

Herr Von Kalder's article opens many different windows, all of them frightening.
The merging of metal music, facism, & the German Mentality is a frightening thought. Has Rammstein played a Concert in Israel?
Metal appeals suburban kids with raging hormones who have no masculine figure in their life. From childhood these kids are discouraged from any type of aggressive behaviour. They are discouraged from defending themselves. Rammstein provides them with some sort masculine role model. Defiant baritone, pulsating beat, German Nationalism,…
Young men project masculinity in different ways. French & Italian guys try to look like underwear model. In East L.A. we wore the iconic cholo uniform of freshly pressed white t-shirt and khaki pants. Herr Von Kalder and other Rammstein fans grasp for masculinity in a different way.
By the way, I take a little bit of a shot at Von Kalder, but I loved the article as well as his insights into Germany and Metal music.
Nena – 99 luftballoons – in Greman. YEA! That's ROCKIN OUT!
Yea, I gotta back you up on that one. The midget singer and his *green* b.s is annoying but all in all the Scorps rock out.
If you want some dealing with the Vanir, look for Black Messiah's "First War of the World."
I'll check it out. Thanks.
Home run, Herr Halder!
Picked up "Sehnsucht" right after Columbine because the news reports wouldn't shut up about it. To American ears, yes, they sound horrific. But, the German is subtle and actually playful. You can count me as a fan.
(That and the purchase was the only time I ever got grudging respect from the pierced glitterati at Tower Records in Manhattan.)
Best wishes,
-MFS
I thought they were singing "You"…"You hate"… "You Hate Me"…that was all cool and things were good… until it was pointed out he was saying "You"… "You have"… "You have me"… so a kick ass metal song turned into a sappy love song! 99 Luftballons all over again!
Well now I know Daniel that you partake in the Herb. That is the only way you could like this shit.
I prefer the dulcet tones of a chain saw ripping through a crate of rabid cats
Some examples of good German metal would be bands like Kreator, Sodom, and Destruction! I personally dont consider Rammstein metal myself, industrial rock maybe.
i kinda dig rammstein but….comparing scorpions to winger? huh? plodding industrial metal? isn't that what rammstein is?
dude…i dont know who you are but your "critic" skills are fail…this article has the stench of "amateur local alternative music zine hack writer" all over it…whoever hired you should be fired…
Probably better that way. Black Metal? Attacked. This terrible band? Attacked. I'm beginning to suspect he may not like metal.
On a more serious note though, I didn't realize all that about Rammstein, that's pretty messed up. On a good note, I've always avoided them because I knew, even back when I first started listening to metal, that they suck.
My big problem with most of heavy metal is I can't understand the lyrics. I love the lyrics when I finally get a copy of them, and I love the music. But when they're screaming at the top of their lungs, it's hard to understand what they're saying.
Hey, I happen to LIKE Nena.
Mmm…Hanson! Those chicks are HOT!
Yeah, no shit. I wish people would bother to get their facts straight, instead of spouting off. Scorpions were anything but a "hair metal" band, and Michael Schenker can play circles around most guitarists, including Rammstein's.
"…comparing scorpions to winger?"
Yup, I pretty much lost interest in the rest of the article when I saw that. I'll happily take some Tokyo Tapes action over Rammcrap any day.
There the band that did the song "A Drug against War" right.
I did not really get that he was trashing the band.
Evidently so does Rammstein
Especially when its in another language LOL
Actually whatever esle the sins Rammstein may have committed the get a +1 in my book for compairing leftists to ants marching left. LOL! It does not make up for public sodomy however……..
However the get a minus one for not understanding that Fascism is itself a leftist philosophy but I blame the East German educational system for that. So minus one to communist teachers under the GDR.
is that your platform? then you have my vote. :0)
I'm wondering how long before we see a correction and mea culpa? /s
If anybody wants a laugh, look up "rammstein" + "winnie the pooh" on youtube. for that matter, try "kermit the frog" and "hurt".
more seriously, you haven't heard good metal until you listen in the original Norwegian…. the Swedes have some good stuff too. The only other metal worth listening to was composed in the '80s.
I've tried to give Rammstein a listen and I've never seen what the big deal is. I'm a fan a metal and they struck me as nothing special.
I don't get Rammstein.
I'm a huge Rammstein fan (and a fan of KMFDM, Laibach, Kraftwerk, and Einstürzende Neubauten) and am extremely conservative. Rammstein's members are liberal but their music is not political so who cares. Even KMFDM's liberal nonsense is easily overlooked considering their awesome music (except for WWIII onward). I like industrial music and the best industrial bands are from Germany/Austria.
German's not a big deal to me. I can read it, and understand about a third of what is said if it's said clearly. It's the shouting. It's called singing for a reason.
Daniel,
How about "Ohne Dich" or "Ich Will"…here are two songs whose message you may appreciate and even respect. Aren't you overlooking American bands in your zeal to hate Rammstein…I personally would choose them any day than most US banks.
– Stuffy
i just can't get into rammstein though i do recognize their talent.
and the winger/scorpions thing….yes, i believe the scorps are to germans what winger is to americans…embarrassing.
Have to agree, I always liked KMFDM, but to compare them to Rammstein is not fair two differnt forms of music.
This dude knows nothing about metal. Simulated male rape does not a metal show make. These guys will never be mentioned in the same breath as the metal gods of Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, etc. and they will certainly never be in the same zip code as the greatest metal band of all time…Iron Maiden!
I understand the lyrics all too well. Rammstein always sounded like a big joke to me. They are not taking their own stuff seriously. No way.
I cannot take Rammstein seriously. They´re putting us on. Their music is what happens when you apply central planning to rock. Boring family men coming up with harmless provocations. The lyrics are a big joke and the music is crass and artless – nothing to it. I love power in music, and monotony plus sound pressure doesn´t equal power.
I never really knew who KMFD was but I happened to hear that song. I bought that CD for no other reason. But it was a good album. I always thought they were KMFD because of the lyrics.
KFMD is a Drug against War….
HOly frikkin yeah, this writer just lost all of my respect. What kind of tool runs down the Scorpions like that. Either Shenker brother is all you need for greatness. I swear what are they teaching in schools today….
It´s metal for people who don´t like ROCK and who just don´t want to admit that they prefer Marschmusik.
they suck ass….since the 90's.
