‘Whatever Works’ Doesn’t
by Dan GiffordWho says time travel isn’t possible?
I spent 92 long minutes in Woody Allen’s cinematic wayback machine yesterday, reliving almost all the 60’s pseudo-psychoanalytic cultural neuroses, nihilism and negative leftist judgmental-stereotypes he popularized then that still have us on the couch and at each other’s throats.
Allen wrote the script more than 30 years ago with Zero Mostel in mind as the obvious, self-involved, Allen alter-ego lead character living in a psychobabble New York City hell of his own creation. But a not so funny thing happened on Zero’s way to the Forum years ago, leaving Allen to look for an actor who could convincingly play the part of a brilliant Jewish string theory former professor in his sixties who manages to schtup and then marry a vulnerable, naive teenager. The familiar ring of that scenario is integral to the theme of “Whatever,” which is that there is no God, everything that happens is just random cosmic kaka, and so we should all do whatever gets us our jollies.
Yahweh may not agree, but He did create a person unbalanced enough — at least from what I read — to play the lead: Larry David of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm (mine was curbed shortly after the fade from black).
In scenes that must have been twenty or more pages long, David’s Boris Yellnikoff –emphasis on “yell” — alternately kvetched and sneered in gawd awful-long soliloquy to the fourth wall about sophomoric penis envy, vaginal snapper fear, Oedipal lust, suppressed homosexuality, atheism, NRA hating, fly-over land cretin bashing, inner-selves yearning to be free and other urban elitist Nietzsche-Kant-Sartre politically liberal arrogance that used to be such great co-ed thigh openers at frat house mixers or the White Horse Tavern while channeling and analyzing Dylan Thomas’ inner Freudianism Jungism.
Do not go gentle into that good theater darkness for this one, my friend, unless you can stand the past life regression to “Oooh, so what were Freud and Jung really saying?” by the keg.
Well, Freud said sometimes a cigar is just a cigar while Jung thought that a woman was a woman but a cigar was a smoke. But lemme play it out for ya …
My name is Sigund Freud outa Vienna, and I bring youuuu … a VIRUS for the Jung !!!
You make me feel so Jung
You make me feel my head has sprung
And every time I look at you
I feel so very, psychological.
The Moment that you speak
I wanna hold my head and freak …
“That’s sooo clever and deep. And just where is your room in this great big house?”
Heh, heh…
Wouldn’t every aging man like to live the Lolita fantasy of a nubile bed-mate who swallows every cockeyed pessimistic rant about life and love and God without challenge while offering a Viagra? Sure you would. And I’ll bet Woody likes it too, which is why his Yellnikoff seems an awful lot like the Max Von Sydow misanthrope of “Hannah and Her Sisters.” It’s on his mind. It’s in his life. Woody may look mellow, but there’s a raging river of recurring themes that cannot find resolution behind those horn rims — emphasis on horn. Maybe that’s why he’s gone to a shrink every day for the past 50 years.
How Allen managed to inject his own psycho-neuroses, political and social views on the American culture, I don’t know. Was his wimpy, over-therapied, pseudo-intellectual image something America wanted to imitate? Or were those who most identified with Allen already that way? Whatever, the unvarnished anger and snobbery of the urban chattering class toward those who lead traditional lives (married, kids, religious, employed at non artsy jobs — particularly those who lead those traditional lives in “flyover land”) is on display in this film for all us artistic elites to wallow in.
Guys who like football are hiding their lust for guys by watching guys in tight pants. Guys who own a gun are compensating for the inadequate size of their penis. Belief in God is a form of arrested mental development. All of which reduces to Allen tellin’ those schmucks who think they’re happy with their routine lives that they aren’t.
Some of Allen’s solutions?
Admit you’re really gay and live the lifestyle. Throw away that Bible that’s causing sexual repression and discover the new Jesus of a bisexual menage a trois. Take advantage of teenage girls. Try and commit suicide — twice — as Yellnikoff does.
Try? I’d have been willing to kill that sob for sure, especially after finding a $55 parking ticket on my car after the movie.
Whatever.

Save us from Woodie Allen, Lord.
The man is a walking put down…. srsly, look at what he did to his life and so called adopted daughter with Mia Farrow…. please god save the queen and ALL of from Woody Allen…
I've never understood the fascination with this man. Maybe I'm too young, but it seems, to me, that his earlier films were relevant at the time, but he's stuck to the script and therefore come off as… I don't even know.
That Picture with the Awesome Looking Girl and this horrible old shell of a Woody Allen leering over here just about sums up the entire Progressive movement if you ask me.

That's Scarlett Johansson. He is leering and put her in one of his movies that "dirty talks" about threesomes. But I wouldn't feel sorry for her–she probably felt really sophisticated humiliating herself for him.
"she probably felt really sophisticated humiliating herself for him."
That is precisely why I feel Sorry for her.
"she probably felt really sophisticated humiliating herself for him."
That is precisely why I feel Sorry for her, though thanks for the identification, I thought she looked familiar, the Clothes threw me off…
Thumbs up, Big.
She's not his type. She's not related to him and she's over 16.
I am with you. does he actually make a living? I can not understand his appeal
So… no one who sees this has yet managed to catch that the actual "gag" at play is that Boris is completely full of it and after circumstance has finished slapping the stupid out of the rest of the cast it turns around and does the same thing to him? I mean… that struck me as sort-of hard to overlook being that it's the ENTIRE 3rd Act.
I get the sense that a lot of folks get up to the point of the Patricia Clarkson character and tune out having already "decided" what the movie is about. A more cynical man would posit that these are some of the same folks who "always hated" Woody Allen and seized on the Soon-Yi thing as a better-sounding justification than "I just never got the punchlines." A more cynical man would posit that, yes…
I think everyone should take a step back from hating Woody Allen and consider one point that all if his nihilist/narcissist characters have in common from beginning to end… their lives don't work. They're completely miserable. While Allen likes to poke fun at people he's never met in the most shallow of terms, his erudition is tempered, I think, by the acceptance that his life, and those of his one screen alter egos, is completely empty. In the midst of the mockery there is also profound envy. I also think this point is being made intentionally. The only characters that gives he resolution or happiness exist in his more 'classic' comedies. The characters in his movies that attempt to peruse deep human truths (as he perceives them) are left empty in the end.
I get the criticism, but for me… I am still a fan.
Is he still alive? Who Knew?
Hasn't done anything funny since "sleeper", although his marraige and divorce was a riot.
Funniest line was in "Bananas", when, at the end, Howard Cosell asks the just shot and dying dictator lying on the capital steps, "General, now that your all washed up…"
I guess you had to be there!

But let me add… I won't be seeing "Whatever Works", either. I pick and choose my Woody Allen movies carefully.
Is this a movie?
Why are the ugliest usually the most obsessed with sex?
The Bible causes sexual repression Woody Allen? Last I heard married people get more action than scrawny little leftist nerds who are obsessing over sex because no one but uptight freezer-cold left wing preachy women are available because all the good ones… well we found the good guys.
"Take advantage of teenager girls?"
Let's be honest, people like Woody Allen are still being picked last in gym for a reason.
Watching a Woody Allen movie is the same as dwelling at a car wreck, and just as much thought has gone into it.
It's a tough call, but I have to go with Sleeper, when he finds a newspaper from 1990 and reads the headline: "Pope's wife gives birth to twins… wow." Or "I'm what you call a paleological existensional atheist. I believe that there's an intelligence to the universe with the exception of certain parts of New Jersey."
"Your comment must be approved by the site admins before it will appear publicly. "
I love how the auto-censor slaps me even for just quoting a passage of the article!
I agree with the first half of your sentence, but not the second. I think the problem with his movies is that TOO much thought has gone into them.
oddly tho, as a kid Allen was supposedly good at sports and even "first to be picked".
BWAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA……
that was his slap comedy stuff, not his psycho drama stuff. Sleeper is my favorite, with Bananas a close 2nd.
In all fairness, "Take the Money and Run", "Bananas" and "Sleeper" are three of the funniest films ever made. The problem is that they were made over thirty-five years ago. Somewhere along the way (and particularly after "Annie Hall") Woody Allen decided to become a parochial filmaker catering to a very small audience. That's his right but nearly all of his films over the last thirty years (except for perhaps "Crimes and Misdemeanors") are the work of a petty intellectual who isn't as smart as he thinks. His movies always seem to be made for elite critics who can play "spot the reference to other directors" while watching them. It's a very cozy arrangement. And as he gets older he seems to hold more and more of the rest of us in contempt.
I don't even need to see the movie at all. The whole thing justified its own existence with the photo of Scarlett Johansson there. (I don't even see Allen behind her).
funny story happened to me. Had a date with a totally rad hot girl who turned out to be conservative. Made the mistake of renting a Woody Allen movie…And that was pretty much the end of it. LOL.
Conservative has nothing to do with Woody Allen. His movies are so milquetoast and boring. I'd be inclined to watch this just because of Scarlett, but I'd have to mute it. She was great in "The Island" although I don't remember much of the dialog in it either.

What's with the pic? Scarlett Johansson isn't in this movie.
Wrong again, Movie Bob!
Woodie made us vomit all by himself!
So you are one of "the appreciators" of great genius. We are humbled to have you visit among us.
lol!
She was in the movie right before it. ChrisinaVicki Barcelona or VickyChristinaBarcelona *Spolier Alert* Although there is an indication that she might–she does not get naked.
"Conservative has nothing to do with Woody Allen."
except for the fact that he's a favorite punching bag. Afterall, sometimes its more succinct and effective to explain what you stand against than to explain what you stand for.
Thus this article.
More categorical negativety from the party of "no".

I have to admit I like a lot of Woody Allen's movies even though his most recent efforts have been disappointing. He just creeps me out much in the same way Roman Polanski does (another director who makes good movies).
Party of no? You must mean the Democrats over the past 8 years? We're saying no to socialism. If Obama wasn't ramming it down our throats with the hugest toilet plunger in history, we wouldn't have a problem. The entire premise of our country over the past 200+ years is being replaced with a nanny statist form of government and if we don't put on the brakes and slow it down, we're going to end up like the losers in Europe who have allowed it to happen. We are for self reliance and Obama is against it. He sees government AS the solution to ALL our ills. If saying no to that makes us the party of no, then count me in.
But with that aside, Woody Allen isn't worth the effort of conservatives. We could care less about this psuedo-pedophile. His movies are boring and pointless. But he's given accolades as being some sort of genius.
Wow, you guys are very timely with your reviews. This only came out a month ago.
he isn't worth the effort and you could careless… but yet you sure like to bring him up and talk about him and feature articles about him on your aspiring "Big Hollywood" blog, eh?
I look at a guy like Woody Allen and I generally feel pity. Here's a guy so obsessed with unsolvable inner problems that he can't seem tohelp himself but to only indulge in a life of self-made misery. I'm *not* a fan of him… I'm just glad that I'm not like that.
but on the other hand, I'm also not going to cultivate a position and meme of just trashing the guy. You say he has nothing to do with conservatives… but he sure seems like one of your people's favorite subjects!

I'm old enough, but like you I've never understood his popularity. As "Bob Hope" said in "Play It Again Bob", the only one of his movies I liked was "Casino Royale".
I like your Tor Johnson pic.
Amen
Amen again.
I refuse to patronize a film made by a man? who would molest/date his lover's young adopted daughter. Woody is a pedophile and a cretin.
Good for her!
De-evolution?
He really isn't worth any of our time and I don't think he's come up on this board before, but now just because of this movie review. Other than that, I rarely hear a conservative bring up his name. He deserves to be made fun of. He dumped his aging wife for his daughter. That is a Woody Allen movie right there. I will say that some of his movies might be charming in a subtle way, but are still boring.
I refuse to patronize a film made by a man? who would molest/date his lover's young adopted daughter, even if he did eventually marry her. Woody is a pedophile and a cretin, and I've NEVER understood his appeal as a filmmaker.
Tells you where Woody Allen ranks.
I don't care to watch much Woody Allen, but I'll give him credit where it's due. The man at least tries to be honest. Having abandoned God, he's left looking at a world that is apathetic about destruction and heartlessly running everyone through the meat grinder. With such a worldview, some resort to "eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die" but Allen sees even THAT is empty and void, for there is no ultimate purpose or meaning to our own narcissim. What's the point of being merry when being merry is self-delusion?
So, sadly, Allen's lived a life that he's considered pointless and irrelevant. And he still has Hell to look forward to…
Who says it's old news? Liberals? Conservatives could care less. We don't obsess over Woody Allen. It's fun to make fun of the guy when his name does come up. He's still married to his daughter. I would venture to say that conservatives don't stay awake at night thinking of Woody Allen. If you're talking liberals, they give him a pass because most of them have no moral compass to work with anyway.
"he's a favorite punching bag"
I forget this man ever existed until the random review comes up. I suppose he has an audience, but he just does not interest me.
I remember the whole divorce thing from when I was a kid but I never understood who everyone was talking about. For me not much has changed.
He always struck me as one of those people you are supposed to like but very few people actually do.
"Your people's favorite subjects?" – I've been following this site pretty regularly for the last five months and this is the first time I remember a reference to Mr. Allen. By the way the proper useage for the above is either "…he sure seems like one of your favorite subjects" or "he sure seems like one of the favorite subjects of yours." The use of "peoples" is grammatically incorrect and superfluous since your are presumably already addressing all of the retrograde conservatives on BH as a group.
Pure garbage script. Badly written, filmed like a cheesy high school play, the storyline is adolescent from the 50's and the casting is awful. Had to sit through the film to wait for my friend and it was torture. Read all of my email including spam just to get through the film. Woody is washed up. Anyone who gives him anything remotely resembling film to play with should be given life imprisonment. Allen and his life are a big exploited overpaid ZERO!! Fortunately most of your audience is in a nursing home and if they saw the film wouldnt remember it a moment later!!
Jewish folk don't believe in hell. Especially us non-practicing ones.
Right on MovieBob.
Allen's films (these kind of films, anyway) are about making sense of the world through his atheist point of view, without pulling any punches to make the point of view seem more appealing. Frankly, if nothing else it is refreshingly honest.
Minus points to CrisD for not making anything resembling a valid argument. Super job! Way to defend that position.
Exactly… Allen's "punching bag" situation was almost strictly due to the stepdaughter issue, although I'm sure you can find others who gripe about him for little thigns.
Heck, once in a while, I'll admit to enjoying a Woody Allen movie (i'm one of the few people I know that liked Jade Scorpion)…but even I can only deal with him in small doses. The self-neurotic type of character just grates on me after a while, and he never seems to change that character/role, ever…. (ala Richard Lewis' character as well)
I know hugest isn't a word. But I think Joe Biden uses it.
It was reviewed by John Nolte when it came out. It isn't infrequent to have multiple reviews of a film spread out over a few weeks here. I like that.
indeed, even I enjoyed Sleeper.
more like Entropy.
more like Entropy; but with a vengeance.
I think there a lot of people here who like the best of Woody Allen's stuff. I like Annie Hall, Sleeper, Bananas, Take the Money and Run, and Bullets Over Broadway myself.
Maybe Nolte can do a Woody Allen top five so those conservatives (and anyone else) who like him can discuss. Probably not going to happen in the comments in a review of a movie almost no one is going to see. (Based on the reviews, I'll be skipping this one.)
A date with a "rad hot girl" and you rent a Woody Allen movie??? There are so many other BETTER movies out there. What were you thinking??? Hellooooo…. ARONOVSKY?!?!?!?! What about Spielberg's "A.I."? You want some moral ambiguity? Try a nice film noir!
You must have subconsciously felt she was too good for you so you sabotaged the relationship before it could even start. How's THAT for psychobabble?
Just out of curiousity (everyone loves a good train-wreck), which cinematic gem did you kill the chance of a 2nd date with?
Uh…. "OBSESSED with unsolvable inner problems, can't help (him)self and INDULGES in self-made misery" sounds like THE LIBERAL CONDITION. This is entertainment? This is supposed to make us THINK about big subjects, deep concerns? No! This is just pathetic behavior on grand display, which is what liberals do. "Wah, I have so many problems! I hate God, I'm an atheist, I hate Republicans, I hate guns, I hate, I hate I hate. I feel so bad, I might as well do drugs and have casual sex to try and make myself feel better. Oh! It's not working, I still feel bad! Why does my life have no meaning? Wah!"
Allen's not a favorite subject any more than liberals are or cancer is. It's just a fascinating subject. We're fascinated by the symptoms of a disease, and the disease is called SELF-ABSORPTION.
Small doses is important. I like "Broadway Danny Rose". I just don't think Allen is any kind of great genius; he just has a very distinctive style of writing and film-making. That's all.
Shouldn't he have learned by now? Most of us grow up in our 20s and 30s – certainly when we have children. Woody hasn't and it's tiresome to see a guy in his early SEVENTIES trying to work this stuff out.
Sounds like you never blew it with a prospect huh? Well good for you.
Anyway, its all for the best.
People like you discribe are pathetically self-absorbed, no doubt. But I got news for ya buddy it ain't a liberal condition.
Look at all of the cry baby's on the right: ooh poor us the MSM media is out to get us. Ooh poor us they were mean to Sarah Palin. wah wah wah. This is also "just pathetic behavior on grand display,"
"mean to Sarah Palin"? Mean doesn't begin to cover it. And I dont think there is any one on the right who characterizes the MSM as out to get us. They are out to "get" Palin.
I don't get Woody Allen but The whole Ed Wood World fascinates me.
They've admitted they are out to get her.
"J O B S" is a three letter word according to Biden. But at least his boss thinks there are 57 states.
So does David Lynch. But I find David much more entertaining.
A more cycnical man might say you support Woody's view..the cranky guy who thinks he's smarter then everyone else surrounded by rubes who just don't understand.
Frankly, if nothing else it is refreshingly honest.
Isn't funny that things we agree with are refreshingly honest..how bout if this film had a gay person who realized being gay wasn't something your born into but just a lifestyle choice and he made the wrong choice..if the film maker truely believed that would you praise him for being refrshingly honest?
I know he doesn't believe in Hell…but he still has it to look forward to.
If nothing else, I think Woody Allen has a very good shot at a massive lawsuit against his therapist. Has anyone in history spent as much time and as much money to so little effect? Of course, he has come up with a brilliant counter-strategy. He puts all of his creepy hangups on film, gets beautiful women to act in them, and charges a bunch of snobs to pay to watch the result.
Still, he–and his remaining viewing public–both deserve a refund.
Minus points to CrisD…
So says the person who is not voting anyway since they are not registered, but sure seems eager to give that impression to sway other people's votes. Are you trying to bulk up your resume before applying for an ACORN job?

Two new words for the list, "penis" and "vagina," while it rejected "analyzing" because "anal" was in it.
Word search puzzles are such fun!
Alt characters? I just use HTML and put one letter in italics. Far easier with far less keystrokes to remember.
MovieBob: I haven't seen this one, but I have a feeling, based on Allen's past films, that I'd wind up agreeing with you. Allen is a self-professed atheist but his movies like "Crimes and Misdemeanors" and "Match Point" show him clearly uncomfortable about the implications of there being no God.
On an unrelated note, I'm surprised Gifford didn't regale us with a joke about Allen's other obvious feature: his predilection for Jung girls.
I think you meant "crybabies" (you intended a plural, not a possessive); and sorry, we DO tend to get upset at injustices perpetuated by leftist attack-dogs. We prefer fairness in all aspects of life. It's how we roll. She STILL has more executive experience than Obama does, and she's DEFINITELY smarter than Biden!
"how bout if this film had a gay person who realized being gay wasn't something your born into but just a lifestyle choice and he made the wrong choice..if the film maker truely believed that would you praise him for being refrshingly honest?"
If the film was good, well-written and this change for the character came from a place that made sense and didn't simply happen so that the film could send a "message" then, yes, I would.
That's the thing, though: WOODY doesn't support Woody's view
It's often a mistake to assume that because an author inserts himself as a character (or a character's voice) in his own work – or if a main character speaks "to" the audience – that the film is automatically endorsing their point of view. Woody's "this is me" characters are almost uniformly miserable, unhappy men who are usually taught the lesson of the film. He's NEVER done a "Lady in The Water" – wherein M. Night Shyamalan wrote and acted a character who is a misunderstood genius who's divinely-inspired writing will bring about world peace. (Really.)
Part of the "key" to Whatever Works is that the family of "rubes" Boris detests are all really, REALLY nice people both before AND after they "transform." (SPOILER) Clarkson's character, for example, turns out to always have been a gifted artist who simply wasn't recognized until she shows a photo to one of Boris' (much nicer) friends.
The problem with Woody Allen is that , in all the decades that he has been rehashing the Meaningless Life schtick, there has been no evidence of development, no deeper insight, and no finer (or even cleverer) presentation. It's like an old man endlessly reciting his Wunderkind college thesis on existentialism. over and over and over and over again. He has become a bore.
As for his affair with Sun Yi, yes, he behaved despicably, but let's cut out the "molestation" and "pedophile" accusations. The girl was not a minor . SHE bears plenty of blame for her vicious treatment of a woman who opened her arms and home to an orphaned child.
(Roman Polanski, OTOH, really is a criminal child-abuser. … Also a far, far better filmmaker than Allen, though I hate to say it.)
