The Awakening of a Dumb (Gay) American
by Charles WinecoffHaving never been big on the holidays, I decided to do something different this past Christmas. Instead of sending fruit-of-the-month baskets to family and friends, I made gift donations to ActforAmerica.org, the grassroots watchdog group, founded by Lebanese-American Brigitte Gabriel that keeps an eye on the spread of Islamic supremacy and jihad here in the US.
Yes, Virginia, there is a jihad. I was pretty sure all Americans were aware of that.
But I quickly learned that the topic has basically become taboo here in the civilized world – kind of like the way homosexuality used to be before people fought back. Despite the fact that we are currently at war with Islamic extremists who are fervently devoted to annihilating the Great Satan (that’s you and me), I received two reactions for the donations I made.
One was silence. No perfunctory thank yous, just cold-as-a-morgue-slab silence. Apparently, such a gift didn’t deserve an acknowledgment. We don’t talk about those things.
The other was anger – please remove us from the mailing list immediately – upsetting to someone like me, who takes disapproval very hard. (For the record, ActforAmerica.org did not automatically add anyone to their mailing list, but simply sent out brochures about the organization.)
Of the two reactions, I preferred the anger; it seemed healthier, gave me something to respond to, and got me thinking. I realized I had to come out of the closet – again. The first time was in 1977, when, as a teenager, I had to cope with the fact that I was gay. Luckily, I lived in New York City, where gay people were visible and vocal. So as scared as I was, at least I knew I wasn’t alone.
But here in L.A., in 2008, it occurred to me that I might be alone. Still, the cat was out of the bag. I realized I couldn’t pass anymore as a good Left-leaning homo. The camouflage had worn thin. So I wrote an open letter to my friends and family. History certainly does repeat itself, doesn’t it? I share my second coming out with you here.
*********
Dear friends,
I probably should have done this a long time ago, but it has been too convenient (though hardly easy) to simply keep my mouth shut and try not to displease people or get myself into “trouble” in so-called polite society. I’ve always been a people pleaser, constantly changing my opinion to suit others – and frankly, most of the time, I’ve actually been afraid of saying what I really think. But I’m pushing 50 now, I’ve been through a lot – as we all have – and I simply cannot do it anymore.
I am gay and I am American. I didn’t choose either, but those are the facts. I have spent a lifetime working hard to overcome guilt and fear about being gay – and in my lifetime, I have seen a lot of progress in our society regarding the acceptance of homosexuality and same-sex relationships. No matter what obstacles gay people have faced, and no matter who was President, things have always moved forward. That’s a good thing, and at this late stage in my life I see that America is one of few places on earth where that is possible. A lot of people who do not live here are well aware of America as a place of change. But it has taken me all these decades to understand and appreciate how unique and special that is in this world.
Like many people, particularly the young people I work with today, I grew up comfortably and with very little knowledge of American history. I took a lot of things for granted. There were always looming threats, like the atom bomb I had recurring nightmares about as a child – dreams in which my parents and I were in an airplane, flying low over scorched, blackened earth. And I often wondered why, when we were bombarded with endless images of starving children in Africa, that we had a color television and plenty of food at home. I used to worry that we might, like a character in a Grimm’s fairy tale, suddenly lose everything and end up on the street – or worse. Certainly, that has happened to real people throughout history, and still happens every single day. But we were lucky.
I always had a sense of being in a luxurious bubble – that could burst at any moment.
On the morning of 9/11, the bubble burst. All my childhood fears of the Brothers Grimm came true – especially for people in my home town. I was glad to be thousands of miles away in sunny LA, which had always seemed to me like a safe place. But as a boy, I had watched those towers go up from our terrace, and I was stunned just like everybody else at the magnitude and horror of the destruction. I am grateful that I was not there to see body parts hitting the sidewalks, or to smell the burning bodies and debris, which I was told you could smell way uptown for weeks. I got out of there just in time. For once, my timing had been perfect (I had relocated in July 2001).
But here in LA, something equally bizarre was happening – or my eyes were being opened to it for the very first time – and it was almost as difficult to comprehend as the devastation. Literally within hours of the attack, an old school chum, now also living in LA, forwarded me a mass email from MoveOn.org – urging people not to give in to their feelings of fear and anger (normal in a grieving process), but to ask why this violence had been directed at us and to take a hard look at what we had done to inspire such an act.
I had never heard of MoveOn.org before. I had always just assumed that my friends and I were on the same smart, liberal wavelength – wanting equal rights for gays and women and minorities, cynical about the US government, distrustful of evangelical Christians and rightwing bigots, suspicious of American history as portrayed in patriotic films and in the textbooks of my boyhood – the usual stuff. The few times I had voted, I simply hit every lever that had a “D” next to it. That’s how I was raised. That’s what I believed in.
But this email was different. I met my friend for dinner and we talked about the attacks, the details that were coming out, this weird religion that appeared to be behind it all. I knew nothing about Islam or the Middle East, except that they had been calling for “death to America” recently and there was always a lot of violence over Israel – which frankly, I could not even locate on a map. I always pictured Israel as an island where Great Britain is. And I was 41 years old.
I was frightened. While I personally did not know anyone who had been killed, I knew several people who had lost family – and there was Berry Berenson, whom I had met briefly and spoken to on the phone and spent years pondering and analyzing and writing about, who was one of the victims on the first plane that hit the WTC. The thought of what the last 45 minutes of her life must have been like haunted and terrified me for a long, long time. Like so many other people, I was scared, mad, confused, a jumble of feelings.
My friend John, an NYPD officer and a very liberal guy, lost his wife in the attack. When I finally touched based with him again a few months later, he would often tell me proudly about the sensitivity training the NYPD was undergoing – even despite the fact that the department had been informed of hundreds of sleeper cells spread all over the NY/NJ area.
He also told me how, during the 4th of July fireworks at the FDR Drive, officers he knew had detained a Middle Eastern couple. The couple had asked a cop, in English, where the restrooms were; later that night, they were found wandering beneath the FDR Drive, snapping photos of the structural underbelly. When they were brought in for questioning, they pretended not to speak a word of English.
It took years for John’s wife’s remains to be found. They had two sons, who were too frightened to live in NYC anymore after that. John sent them to boarding school in another state.
Meanwhile, back in LA, my old school friend paid lip service to the tragedy of it all and to the disturbing emotions that were running high. But she was always quick to remind me of what the MoveOn.org email had said: we needed to ask why – and we needed to learn to listen. She had taken a Native American Talking Stick Circle workshop; she and others were taught to pass the “talking stick” and to listen quietly as whoever’s turn it was to hold the stick, spoke. When you got the stick, then it was your turn to speak.
I didn’t argue with her, though the anecdote struck me as more than condescending. And the meaning was clear: 3000 people had been murdered in Manhattan, but it was just part of a broader human dialogue. America was arrogant and hadn’t listened, and now we were paying the price – so don’t be emotional, we deserve it. We need to rise above the violence and hear what the perpetrators are trying to tell us – after all, they are downtrodden. We owe them.
I tried to process this line of thinking, but it was so soon after the attack, it only added to my guilt, confusion and anger. Meanwhile, the MoveOn.org emails kept being forwarded to me everyday, with similar messages. It began to seem like MoveOn.org did not want ordinary people like myself to go through a full grieving process – which would include, at the very least, a period of anger (denial), and then sadness. There seemed to be a mass effort afoot to undermine peoples’ natural human reaction to 9/11 – to take away the power of their emotions, and try to replace those emotions with correct thinking ASAP. (In retrospect, someone must have been very afraid of those emotions.)
I was very torn about this. I certainly didn’t want to antagonize anyone. I had always thought I was a cool person. Maybe I wasn’t? Part of me felt guilty for being angry. I wondered if it was wrong – when in fact it was perfectly natural.
In early November 2001, I was at another friend’s house one evening, watching the NBC Nightly News. During a commercial break, the words HAPPY RAMADAN suddenly flashed on the screen, then vanished. I wasn’t sure what I had just seen – or if I had really seen it at all. It was so fast, subliminal. My friend wasn’t sure he had really seen it either. We looked at each other, perplexed. On top of that, I couldn’t recall any network ever celebrating Ramadan before – I barely even knew what Ramadan was. Yet right after mass devastation in my home town, suddenly there it was on the screen. HAPPY RAMADAN – blink and you missed it. We saw the words flash one more time after that, then no more.
I wondered why NBC had done that. More to the point: why had they been so sneaky about it? What were they trying to prove? Were they afraid that angry Americans – like me – were going to grab torches and pitchforks and hunt down Middle Easterners en masse? Or were they trying to reassure Arab-Americans that our hearts were in the right place? The more I thought about it, the more insulting it seemed – to everyone. Yes, people were angry. And yes, there were some cases of vandalism and violence against Arab-Americans. But surprisingly few. For the most part, Americans did not act on their feelings of fury and revenge. We tried to understand what we were feeling and tried to understand what was really going on. There were no lynchings. Still, someone in Rockefeller Center obviously thought very little of their viewership.
People I knew were generally very quick to blame their own country for the attack, and this notion was spreading fast. The ongoing email campaign didn’t hurt. Under most circumstances, I would have been happy to join in with this idea – there was comfort in it. It was familiar. But for the first time in my life, I felt it was inappropriate, and too easy. I began to realize that I did not really believe in the knee-jerk attitudes I had affected for most of my life, in New York. Like most people, I was too worried about what was yet to come – and I also looked back.
I had actually had my first taste of radical Islam in 1989, while I was working at Book-of-the-Month Club. This was long before the US invasion of Iraq. BOMC was a stodgy, unprofitable, harmless little company that was constantly being sold and bought by bigger corporations. We were always on the lookout for books that would sell, since so few did. Then, in 1989, our Editor-in-Chief, a prim and proper British lady who idolized Jane Austen, decided to offer Salman Rushdie’s novel, The Satanic Verses. I had never heard of Salman Rushdie and the book sounded like a literary bore.
The next thing we knew, the FBI contacted our Editor-in-Chief. They told her that the Ayatollah Khomeini had declared a fatwa on BOMC because we had dared to print the book – which had the effrontery to fictionalize an incident in the (probably already fictional) life of the Prophet Mohammed. We could all be killed. None of us had ever heard of fatwa before. But the idea of shrouded, machete-wielding crazies coming up in the elevators to slaughter all the book editors was bizarre and more than a little terrifying. The company name was removed from the lobby directory, and an armed guard was hired to stand in reception, right next to the Oxford English Dictionary. Guns had come to BOMC – and not because we wanted them. Meanwhile, much to the surprise of ordinary citizens like me, the FBI was quietly taking these threats very seriously.
Today, everyone in America knows what a fatwa is – there’s one declared on all of us, still. And nearly twenty years later, the publishing industry is still being bullied – only now, editors in New York actually cancel publication dates to avoid the very real possibility of certain people (again, not us) acting on their violent feelings with arson… or worse.
I was still working at Book-of-the-Month Club in 1993, when the WTC got bombed the first time. Although the news was shocking, it didn’t seem that serious – even to those of us just a few miles uptown in the same city. (In fact, about 1000 people were injured, and a few died.) I’m not sure I even read a single newspaper article about it – I didn’t read the paper then. But I did watch TV news, the lazy way out, and I remember Bill Clinton, who I liked very much, getting on camera and saying something to the effect of “Let’s not overreact” – which stayed with me – and mentioning the crusades, which made me feel vaguely guilty as if, again, somehow we had brought this on ourselves. (Last time I checked, the United States did not exist in 1096.)
If we have brought this violence on ourselves, then we’ve also certainly bent over backwards to whitewash that same violence during the past eight years. And yet nothing has changed.
I remember shortly after 9/11, when NYC lit two huge beams of light into the sky where the WTC used to be. Being a people pleaser, mentally cowering in fear of further assaults, I at first thought the lights were just more proof of our arrogance – sure to provoke further violence. I no longer feel that way. Now I see those lights as a symbol of America’s verve and defiance in the face of brutality. Defiance is good. So is being able to identify right and wrong.
Since 2001, I have done plenty of soul-searching. I toyed with registering as a Republican – but settled on registering as an Independent, to give myself more leeway. I started reading books about the Middle East and Israel to try to understand that basic conflict, which I knew next to nothing about.
See, I had been raised rather anti-Semitic. Many times, my mother, being an old-time WASP worshipper, would make disparaging remarks about Israel and the Jews while Walter Cronkite described some terrible battle on TV. “Israel is so small,” she would say, “it’s like nothing. Why do we have to get involved with that little piece of spit on the map?” I was told that Jews were pushy and arrogant. We had a Jewish-sounding last name that was a constant source of embarrassment.
I thoughtlessly figured that Israel, which I still envisioned as an island near England, should probably relocate and spare us all the pain. Israel must be very selfish. I didn’t even know that Israel is a democracy, a pluralistic society like we are, and I had no concept of how rare that is in the world, particularly in the Middle East. I took democracy completely for granted. Like many Americans, I assumed the whole world was coming from the same place, wanted the same things – with a few bad apples here and there. Now, I see the Israeli-Arab conflict quite differently, and I can understand the disappointment and fury that Bill Clinton is reported to have felt when Yasser Arafat rejected the 2000 Oslo Accords, even after Israel agreed to every concession.
I was also shocked to learn of Islam’s direct connection to Nazism. In his excellent book, The Case for Israel, Democrat Alan Dershowitz, who worked closely with Bill Clinton on the Oslo Accords, recounts matter-of-factly the allegiance between Hitler and the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem (an Islamic nut put into power by the British – big mistake, but who knew?) during WW2. Apparently, the Grand Mufti was tickled pink by the extermination goals and techniques of the Third Reich. Likewise, Hitler recognized a useful pal. Together, they planned to build their own version of EuroDisney: a brand new death camp, modeled on Auschwitz, right in Egypt. Fortunately for the rest of the world, the US intervened, their plans got scrapped, and the War ended.
The point is: that old, perverted German ideology known as Nazism, which we all agree is a bad thing, has never gone out of style – it just moved mid-east. I’m not sure many Americans realize how big a part Swastikas and Nazi salutations play in the radical Islamic world.
In 2006, I had to update my own book, Split Image, for a new, 10th anniversary edition. I very much wanted to add an epilogue about Berry Berenson’s death on 9/11, which was always on my mind. When Split Image first came out in 1996, many people had remarked on the book’s snide tone. I thought they were just angry over the gay content, and I was hurt. But re-reading it after several years, I was shocked at my own snideness. Peppered throughout the entire book were snotty asides and insinuations about American hypocrisy, aspersions about how conformist and rigid our society was, how evil Republicans were, the whole shebang. And I realized something awful: I had just been parroting what I was taught all my life from watching television – which was where I got most of my notions about the world while I was growing up. So I performed major surgery, made the text more neutral – like Switzerland – except, of course, where it directly applied to the story of Anthony Perkins.
But really, what did I have to complain about? Who had forced me to conform to any harsh societal standard? No one. As a boy, I hated sports – so what? I had managed to do a lot of different things in my mindless life. I had tried different jobs, different boyfriends, different living situations, different cities, different drugs and alcohol – who was holding me back and telling me how to live? No one. I had written about things I knew nothing about and had never bothered to investigate.
What have I learned since then? I have learned that the word “conservative” isn’t, in fact, a dirty word; sometimes, it simply refers to peoples’ belief about finances and government spending. A lot of that makes sense to me. But growing up, I always thought it meant something much more sinister and backward and evil, perpetuated by what I saw on television and in movies. Republicans were American Nazis, working to put black people back in chains, force women to have illegal back alley abortions, and force gay people to turn straight and convert to Christianity.
I have since met real people who identify as Republicans and even Christians – the religion we are constantly warned (despite plenty of evidence to the contrary) is the worst, most dangerous in the world. I have been in the dreary Catholic church of my partner’s parents. And guess what. I’ve never felt more welcome, even as an openly gay man there with my partner. I have no interest in Catholicism or going to church. And I’m sure underneath, the church folk do not fully approve of how we live. Maybe some do. But newsflash: I don’t have to approve of how they live either. And none of us is killing the other. They are not the enemy.
I have over the past eight years also observed – and experienced the lash of –
an increasing unwillingness by otherwise decent, intelligent people to tolerate points of view that do not adhere to “politically correct” guidelines. In other words, the “talking stick” schtick no longer asks that you merely listen, it demands that you shut up. And you must conform. Just days after Sarah Palin’s powerhouse speech at the Republican National Convention – before Tina Fey had even unleashed her incredible spoof – I attended a business lunch where withering remarks about the newbie candidate went down around the table like well-lined-up dominoes. Palin was already being labeled a “self-parody”; it wasn’t Tina Fey’s fault. When it came my turn to pipe in, I decided to try chivalry, and simply said I liked the lady.
Silence. Whoops. Party over. Lesson learned: don’t defend the white trash.
Everyone in LA – or NY or SF – should try saying something un-PC in “polite” company. Just to experience the sting. Talk about change: in an instant, you begin to understand how single women in Salem must have felt. Suddenly, you feel naked, exposed, wishing you had Tourette syndrome instead of common sense. After a few such experiences – and they usually involve some degree of verbal abuse – you start thinking twice about speaking your mind. Funny, I thought that was what we were all supposed to be fighting for.
Diversity and freedom of thought and expression are supposed to be what makes us different from most other societies. Sadly, I am only just beginning to understand this concept now, the hard way, in middle age, having never known anything else and taken it for granted most of my life.
The freedom to be individuals as opposed to just followers is what still brings so many people here from other lands and cultures, often because they can’t find refuge anywhere else. Somali-born Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who wrote the beautiful memoir Infidel, has ended up in the US, her last hope for safety – as did Oriana Fallaci and Brigitte Gabriel, all of whom have been up-close and personal with Islamic jihad. And all of whom have – or in Fallaci’s case, had – a death sentence on their heads.
In 2004, Ali and her friend, filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, made a 10-minute art film called Submission, about the brutal treatment of women under Islam. Both of them received death threats – in peaceful, progressive Holland – and before the year was out, Van Gogh, the Michael Moore of Europe, was shot by a Muslim man in broad daylight. As he lay in the busy street, Van Gogh asked his attacker, “Can’t we talk about this?” Then the attacker stabbed him repeatedly, furiously, nearly decapitating him.
Not much was written about this in the US, but “over there” it was big news – and indicative of a growing problem. Islamic extremism is directly affecting American tourists as well, particularly gay ones. Washington Blade editor Chris Cain was viciously gay-bashed by Morroccan youths in Amsterdam, once known as the gay capital of the world, but no longer. Cain had made the mistake of holding his boyfriend’s hand in public. In While Europe Slept, Bruce Bawer details how he left the “redneck” US to live with his male lover on the continent, but gradually came to see the growing problem there as well – especially when his partner was nearly knifed in Oslo, by young men of the same ethnic group. Gay events in The Netherlands are regularly disrupted by violence from Islamic minorities, as the number of rapes also continues to rise. The liberal lifestyle once enjoyed in so many Dutch-speaking countries has been curbed by a rapidly growing – and rabidly anti-gay – immigrant population.
There is a lot of literature, written by people overseas, about the demographic shift taking place in Europe. Naturally, I have wondered if these accounts were exaggerated, for publication. But a few months ago, a gay friend came to dinner at our house. I had forgotten that he was Dutch – and he told us how his brother, who is also gay and still in The Netherlands, is trying desperately to get out and join him here in the US. Our friend stated emphatically that both he and his brother no longer feel safe in that once safe haven. Doesn’t this go against everything the gay rights movement has fought for the past three decades?
Over the past eight years, I have been dismayed at the increasing lack of concern among friends and colleagues over this issue – even after the reality of 9/11. Particularly disturbing is the attitude of the young people I work with, who seem to view the attack as part of a video game or a Bruce Willis movie. For a variety of reasons, 9/11 has become a joke to a lot of people.
Most people seem quite complacent, happy not to think about it anymore – or just dismiss the global jihad as one more thing that George Bush bungled, so as soon as he’s gone we won’t have to worry about it anymore. Most people I know believe Bush made the problem worse than it would have been if the US had done nothing but send flowers in response to 9/11. That’s certainly debatable. But saying that doesn’t make the reality of the problem go away.
There have surely been plenty of mistakes made on our part, but the problem began decades ago. Even the very rational and eloquent Aayan Hirsi Ali states at the end of her book, as have the other writers I mentioned, that we in the West need to stop kidding ourselves. As rational people, we want answers and reasons. But the sad fact is that Islam – which is unique among religions in that it’s also a political system (and one in desperate need of an update) – commands believers to destroy all non-believers in order to pave the way for world domination. Islamists have a global agenda, beyond Europe, and they are not shy about shouting it from the rooftops. So back to the talking stick: Why aren’t we listening?
Recently, a news anchor on TV said out loud that she was shocked the Mumbai terrorists had targeted Westerners – like the Jewish couple that was sexually mutilated before being murdered – because there had been such an incredible outpouring of love towards us after the election of Obama. She didn’t understand how it could still be. This just illustrates in the worst way the American myopia, the narcissistic view that everything revolves around us and emanates from our goodness. We seem to be getting softer by the minute. Meanwhile, Islamic fanatics in Tehran are already burning flags of Obama’s smiling face – blood-dripping fangs added, of course. The cry of Death to America is as shrill as ever.
Our well-intended guilt doesn’t impress anyone but ourselves. For all the hand-wringers out there, Ayaan Hirsi Ali makes an important point: we need to be clear about what we are fighting. The enemy is not Muslims, who are just people like you and me, most of whom are sane. The enemy is Islam, the ideology – the ancient, backward doctrine that exhorts a growing minority to kill. Just like white supremacy, Communism, Nazism. So we need to stop feeling shame – because the people who want to kill us sure don’t feel any. If the men who flew the planes into the WTC had been able to detonate atomic bombs instead that day, does anyone really doubt that they would have?
Bottom line: I have had to work very, very hard my whole life to accept myself as a gay man, and to be able to introduce myself freely as such and be proud of my relationship. No one did that for me. But a big plus was living in this crazy, over-the-top country that has changed so much just in my lifetime – and done such an incredible about-face after eight years of an unpopular President. What other country on earth is that flexible? What other country is that trusting?
Now, however, I often feel as if I’ve been shoved right back into the closet by the very people who go around espousing diversity and equal rights and compassion – fellow gay people and “sophisticated” urban friends who in fact can’t tolerate an idea that’s not out of the playbook. When a Muslim leader in Nigeria – or even scarier, in Canada – declares that gay people should be killed and their heads cut off, I’m sorry, but that offends me. And it also worries me because we have all seen these believers act on their hate.
Meanwhile, the affluent gay community in LA never makes a peep about hate speech if it comes from non-caucasians with funny Arabic names. The buff, mostly-white queers just continue doing what they do best: identify as victims and pretend it’s 1977 – protesting the harmless Mormon church, which never fights back, and boycotting campy Mexican restaurants to put other tax-paying minorities (including some gays) out of work. Meanwhile, a threat much bigger than Prop. 8 is growing fast.
My point is: I don’t think American gays fully comprehend that in many countries, such as Iran, gay people really don’t have any rights – not even to live. Just last September, a brave, 27-year-old student and gay rights activist, who helped organize safe houses for gay men in Baghdad and coordinated the Iraqi LGBT group, was gunned down at point blank range by Islamic militants – not by Christians or US soldiers. But by literal neo-Nazis.
Almost everyone I know goes to a therapist. It occurred to me that if someone were in an abusive relationship or their life was threatened by a lover or family member, no therapist in LA would ever advise them to stay in that situation or to try to please the person making the threats. The therapist would tell the client to take action, get out of the situation, file charges – to stand up for him or herself. Why then, on a mass level, are we told to behave the opposite way? To try to be “nice” in the face of threats – or actual violence? Not to empower ourselves and be proud? Why are we urged to take on guilt for the whole world? It’s a very sick dichotomy.
Every day I see people being lazy and turning against themselves when we should all be uniting against something that literally wants to kill us, and that has a specific deadline (yes, it’s true – according to the Muslim Brotherhood’s 100-Year Plan, the Islamic caliphate should be up and running the entire world again by about 2082 – so have fun! Equal rights for all won’t be on the agenda.)
Supporting Western values means letting people be who they are as individuals, being able to disagree or get along with each other in a civilized manner, being able to progress. Yet more and more Americans seem so quick to doubt themselves and the very meaning of democracy. Maybe that’s something people need to reconnect with. I was born here. It was not my choice, but it has generally been an easy and good life. Would I like to live in Europe, while it’s still there, if I had the chance? You bet. But I have to work for a living to take care of elderly family members and my own, nontraditional family. I’m free to do that.
There’s nothing wrong with paying attention and allowing people to have a voice. If MoveOn.org can send out mass emails and action alerts, warning us how not to think and suppressing self-respect – because that is the underlying message for all the cool young folk out there: that if you hate yourself, hostile people will like you – then why can’t someone send out emails and action alerts to slow down the spread of an ideology that actively treats women like barnyard animals, condones slavery, and punishes gays like criminals? (All permissible under Sharia law, which radical Islamists believe should, and will, replace our Constitutional law.)
So that’s why I made the donations. I was thrilled to see that there was an antidote – for people, by people – who want an alternative to “talking sticks” and self-hatred. I thought, just maybe, I might not be alone after all.
I wonder when people will wake up. I hope they do soon. History shows plenty of civilizations have come and gone. We will not last forever either. But if we don’t start paying attention, our time may come a lot quicker and more horribly than we thought. People weren’t being baked in ovens at Auschwitz – or blown up in their office buildings – all that long ago. We need to be able to say out loud that this sort of thing is not acceptable. All cultures are not equal – nothing in nature is. But there is hope as long as we like ourselves enough to recognize danger and do something about it.
We are the only ones who can make a difference and keep an eye on the ball. The politicians will let us down. They always do – you can bet what’s left of your 401K on that.
Thanks for reading.

I read the entire thing. I enjoyed it.
Hey Chuck! I can relate to everything you’ve said. Welcome to the real world. Come as your are.
Way to go Charles.
Charles,
What a brave, inspiring article.
Thank you for writing it.
All the best.
Thank you so much for writing this! It is such a joy to read about someone going through a similar process to the one I did in waking the hell up. It took 9-11 to do it for me to, but I thank God that I did. Better to deal with the hate than to live in insanity.
…dumb…yes most certainly….i’m off for my morning constitutional
Good stuff! Best of luck to you!
Great article, thank you. I’ve often wondered how those liberals who advocate gay rights, and in the same breath, appeasement towards Islamic fanatics, survive the cognitive dissonance those two opposing positions must generate. It’s good to see people are waking up to reality.
Thanks for writing this piece.
Your letter is wonderful! I am glad to have gotten to read it.
God bless you! I am glad you are with us. This is a fabulous article and very worth the bookmark. Thank you for sharing and rising to the call.
I may not approve of your lifestyle, but, I don’t condemn it either. That’s not the subject here anyway. Truth is, you can’t be more correct on the subject of Islam. You are also a lot more conservative than you may think. Good work.
Wonderful! I predicted to a few friends that people like yourself would again come out of the closet. Before the election, I told a neighbor that being a conservative in Hollywood was like being gay in a gay-unfriendly place, and to let anyone know would be like “coming out”. Lo and behold, others like yourself have recognized this, and have decided enough is enough. It takes HUGE courage to write as you do but be aware that MOST Americans actually agree with you. Don’t lose faith in the American people just because a few folks are shrill and intolerant.
Keep writing; you are part of a new vanguard of Americans and your voice needs to be heard.
Awesome! I can only hope that this, and this site, are the start of something wonderful and transforming. I applaud your sincerity and conviction Charles. Well said.
Charles, excellent article! I am with you all the way.
Thank you, Charles. I lived in San Francisco for 25 years but had to leave after 9/11 because I got tired of being called a “self-loathing fag” because I am a Republican. I quoted your letter and linked to you.
Mr. Winecoff thank you for a very well written article. I hope the people closest to you see the ‘dichotomy’ you speak of and open their own eyes to the intolerance they espouse.
Semper Fidelis
Thanks for writing this. No matter what our background, philosophy or theology we are all Americans and, hopefully, believe in the wonder of the “great experiment” which is our country. Nothing is more important for an American than protecting the freedoms which are enumerated in our constitution.
Wonderful…thoughtful..hopeful. As a Jewish conservative, I understand the feeling of being the lone voice of tolerance against “intolerant” liberals. Keep up the fight!
Your journey sounds similar to my own except it was the Angry Feminist angle.
I’m conservative, and I approve of your lifestyle.
But even moreso I admire your guts, especially the guts to think for yourself.
Perhaps I can give you a bit of insight as to why your family was upset with your choice. It’s so obvious that you missed it and, oddly enough, is actually at the heart of your piece. You made a choice that affected others and did something, no matter how correct and important you felt it was, in their name without giving them a say in the matter. This concept is precisely what is occurring in the Middle East and other parts of the world.
Since you have become so open to the investigation of history, you should read about, and really investigate, the Crusades. What is happening now with the movement of Islam across the globe is not new. “We” have been here before but this time “they” have infiltrated important parts of our free society. The trick of the matter is, who really are “they” and do the vociferous leaders speak for all of their people? Just as a Caucasian male from the South could be a “redneck”, he may not be, in the same way as one from the bosom of Liberal Hollywood or NYC might be – the veritable, “wolf in sheep’s clothing”.
The problem is, we no longer have the ability to see the “us and them” portions of the equation so clearly. We cannot look at anyone and declare they are the enemy. We are fighting on an esoteric and surrealistic battlefield of ideas, concepts, and platitudes, all being fueled by religious fanaticism. What is happening now is payback for the wounds suffered upon them 900 years ago. The reason why it took so long is because, while the rest of the world progressed and matured, they remained in the dark ages. They continued to be a patriarchic society ruled by religious leaders while we grew up.
If there is any hope in the current battle, it’s that there are plenty of people used to be a part of that same religious fervor that are now turning away from it. They have experienced the joy and light of freedom and are reveling in the fact they actually have a choice in what they do and how they dress and what they believe. Yes, these same analogies may be used when discussing the suppressive attitudes of the Catholic Church or any other organized religion, but there is now one distinct difference between all of them and Islam. The “Religion of Peace” wants to kill you.
My suggestion would be to apologize to those you brought into your battle. You had no right to conscript them into a fight they have decided, however errantly, not to be a part of. While the silence and ignorance of others may eventually be their undoing, we need to hope that it will not be the undoing of us all.
You have crystallized so many issues in stark clarity! I am a staunch conservative, straight guy so we won’t see eye-to-eye on a lot of things but I find myself in agreement with you on so many levels. Great piece!
This entire article could be summed up in 5 words, “Liberalism is a mental disorder.” The second greatest threat to this country after Islam is what I call the PAWLC (Panzy-A** White Liberal Contingent). I have found Liberalism is the complete and total antihesis of intellect. Until we can bottle common sense, we are in a heap of trouble.
All that aside, this was a fascinating article.
Excellent piece. Thank you for sharing. I can’t say my conversion was exactly the same; this WASPy, somewhat ‘right-wingish’ Canuck had already been jaded by my years in Trudeaupia, but 9/11 (and the Oprahfied ‘culture of victimhood’ backlash) certainly…ahhh…clarified a few things.
Ultimately the coming civilizational clash will be a question of cultural will. Do we believe our existence is worth defending? The West, for all her flaws, allows men and women; conservative or liberal, straight or gay, religious or secular, etc., etc., to live life as they see fit. And sadly but unsurprisingly, our radicalized enemies manipulate this very tolerance in our generation’s crop of useful idiots to achieve their goals, as Mr. Winecoff demonstrates in his piece.
For those who believe the West has built something worth defending, the path forward is clear. Speak up, as the author has done. Be fair but firm. Don’t apologize for your beliefs. It’s possible you will lose a few ‘friends’ along the way, but ultimately you will be able to look in the mirror every morning with a clear conscience.
If enough of us put down our fiddles and grab buckets of water, Rome cannot burn.
What a fantastic, touching, riveting piece. Big Hollywood is doing a great job!

Islam is not a religion; it’s an ideology.

Congratulations to you, Charles, for your courage to speak what you have learned and experienced. It is a scary thing to see so many Americans blinded by the lies and polical propaganda from the news media but you are no longer one of them. Not that I give you praise because I agree with you which I do, but because your sincerity and honesty is refreshing and encouraging at a time conservatives are persecuted at every public point.
I encourage you to read Road to Serfdom by F A Hayek, written in 1946, which talks about a planned ecomony by the federal government. The road to serfdom is not a denial of individual rights, it is the elimination of consumer choices in our (once) free enterprise ecnomic system.
Good luck my friend, and welcome to the fight for all Americans to live in true freedom.
Welcome aboard! Never heard the story before about the gay activist killed in Iraq. It blows my mind when liberal/leftist gays worry more about people who pray for them than the ones who actually want to harm them.

Know Islam. No Peace.
That’s the truth, short and simple.
Europe’s about to be overrun, and if it happens, God help them.
Courage, Charles. Courage. And, Joe, your reading comprehension is lacking.
Good piece. I am afraid it will take another catastrophic attack – or even 2 before most people will wake up. I read somewhere that since 9/11 there have been over 12,500 jihadist attacks around the world – 12,500 – and yet that evil Bush kept them from here.
Of course no matter how many times we are attacked there will always be some apologists here.
That took a lot of guts to write. Thanks for sharing!
Phew! A long read but riveting and well worth the time. Hopefully more people will see that sexual orientation should not determine one’s politics and alliances. That kind of thinking can get you killed, along with a lot of other people who just “want to get along” and not offend anyone. Of particular interest to me was the dying words of Theo Van Gogh, in the face of his own certain demise – “Can’t we talk about this?” It’s downright chilling to think there are so many of my fellow countrymen who would say the same thing in that situation. I think you’ve exposed the lack of knowledge of history for the culprit that it is in this era. Too many Americans are ignorant of not just our history, but that of other countries, cultures and religions. The threat is real. 9/11 was NOT an “inside job” (sorry Rosie, Charlie, et al) and people DO need to wake up before it is too late. Thank you for a great read and for your courage here and in your life.
I am going to foward your letter and say it is mine! No really absolutly identified with every point except being gay. i appreciate a gay voice annoyed by the prop 8 energy when life threatening issues are ignored and silenced. I fell asleep in front of the tv in 2005 happily anti Bush. I drifted half listening to Frontlines “new face of AlQuida” The hair on the back of my neck stood up. That episode got my attention! I woke up to a whole new reality that rings true. i cannot believe how easily i accepted the anti-establishment opinion all of my life. And yes, today I am speaking what i believe no matter how painful. i truly speak with soft voice calm spirit etc. but the response like you is the same. That stoney silence is starting to make me laugh though. There is something so incredibly liberating going on. I understand the NAZI Youths turning in their parents. i see that it is quite possible it could happen to me. I too am not afraid of that possibility anymore though. Thank you!
Charles, you are surely aware that a Pride Parade was held last summer in Jerusalem. I have come to the view that the one sign that will tell us that mankind has a shot at not destroying itself is when the first Pride Parade is held in Mecca. Then, and perhaps only then, will we have proof that human beings have learned to live side-by-side in peace.
ScottDS: As a Jew, I can tell you that it wouldn’t make a bit of difference where Israel was. So long as Jews live somewhere in which they don’t take orders from some other group, it’s bound to engender genoocidal rage on the part of one group or another.
You’re a nobody so who cares
That was great. Someone should send that to moveon.org.
Powerhouse piece. Glad I came across it.
Excellent piece! Substitute gay for feminist and the same thing applies. Militant lib feminists are also silent on the subject of Islamic oppression as they blame America for th eones who want to see us dead.
Very good work!
The problem with the Democratic Party, and the strong left liberal mindset in general, is that they have no real policy or platform to deal with the very real problem of Islamofacism — a problem involving people who hate you and want you to die just because you are not like them.
And sadly, those Democrats who talk tough regarding the problem are often criticized for it by many members of their own party! As everyone knows, it was such tough talk that may have cost Hillary Clinton the election. She was labeled as a hawk by many fellow Democrats, while Barack Obama was able to ride his anti-war stance all the way through the primaries until he clinched his party’s nomination. But being the canny Chicago politician that he is, it was no accident that he softened his stance in the general election.
What I find bizarre about the far left’s “ignore-it-and-it-will-go-away” attitude about Islamofascism is that many of its traditional core groups — feminists, atheists/agnostics, and gays, for example — stand to lose the most as Islamofascism spreads. These core groups tend to vote very heavily for Democratic candidates, but the Democrats, as a party, have not shown that they are prepared to discuss this issue much — let alone advocate agressive steps to combat the problem.
That leaves the Republican Party to try and solve things. But it’s pretty obvious that supporting a Republican candidate is something that is, for the most of those in the core liberal groups mentioned above, a fate much worse than death, imprisonment, multilation or persecution.
Frankly, I think anyone who fears George Bush and his ilk more than al Quaeda is just plain cuckoo.
I think it’s fortunate for this country that while building his cabinet, Obama has shown himself to be a bit more centrist than the far left had hoped, meaning he may actually kick some butt to protect our freedoms if, as I suspect will be the case, some butt needs to be kicked during his administration.
Thank you for sharing your very powerful letter. I went thru similar situations you did, though I’m a simple hetro. Many of my “friends” poke fun of me buying into Bush’s lies and vote Republican (though lately I don’t feel so Republican since they seem to represent spinelessness).
Thanks again for the aricle.
I just made a gift donation to the Mormon Church in your name, Charles.
No need to thank me.
A right on target piece Charles, Well Done! As a brother of an FDNY Captain killed on 9/11, as a gay man, and as a human being, I cannot thank you enough for this intelligent and well written article. I wish I could force every gay man and woman in San Francisco to read it, but of course, like yourself, I don’t believe in forceing anyone to do anything against their will. When I see groups calling themselves “Queers for Palistine” demonstrating against Israel’s right to self defense, all I can see are chickens demonstrating in favor of Colonel Sanders. The ignorance and echo chamber thinking are stunning. I too came to California years ago, and I also grew up in NYC, and also remember watching those towers rise in southern Manhattan. In the years since, when I’ve returned to NYC I’ve yet to be able to bring myself to go downtown and see the pit. Just can’t do it.
Please continue writing, like others have mentioned, I am forwarding this article on to many other people who I believe need a wake up call.
I WILL NEVER SUBMIT!
I applaud your intellectual honesty and ability to change course based on knowledge. Take a look at this website and see if it jolts your reality further.

Re: Joe M.
Isn’t this rich. We have the latest of our resident trolls trying to use the Bible to lecture Christians on what they’re supposed to believe.
“You’re not supposed to like me! You’re not ALLOWED to, you hypocrite! Your own religion says you’ll go to hell if you do! Now despise me the way I despise you. That’s how it’s supposed to be.”
As if by not hating them back, we’re doing them a disservice. Well, maybe we are — the GLBT lunatic wing seems to have such a massive persecution complex that to hate and not to be hated in return takes a lot of the structure, a lot of necessary cohesion, out of their image of the world… hence, perhaps, the outrageous things they do to get attention.
They want to be rejected, despised, outcast. Because if they’re not despised, that implies (in their minds) that no one’s paying attention anymore. Better they should be eternally controversial. If they ever become “well-liked,” as opposed to “frequently discussed by worried people…” there goes their fuel supply, there goes their enthusiasm.
If the gay radicals are pissing someone off, it means they matter. They want us to go on being disgusted and angry with them; they don’t REALLY want us to give them civil rights — if we do, then we can finally stop talking about them. And when that happens, a lot of egos will die a long, drawn out, painful, screaming death.
Nice article, Charles — powerful testimony about the Left’s delusional insistance that Conservatives are engaged in sky-is-falling hysterics regarding Islamic war being waged on everything non-Islamic.
A disembodied Liberal head lying in the sand would look up at his Islamic executioner and say with it’s last breath, “We apologize for offending you.”
Thank you so much! 9/11 changed my life, also.
I think it’s very, very important to emphasize that Islam is not just a religion, it’s a political belief system. The majority of people do not know this. I sure didn’t, until I started reading and watching every thing about Islam that I could get my hands on. A terrific crash course on Islam is a DVD done by Joel Gilbert: “Farewell Israel”. I highly recommend it.
Again, thank you so much. You are not alone.
Pat left this link this morning. It is important. The house is qietly introducing a bill to eliminate the term limits that a President can have. Wow!!

My friend who has traveled extensively in the Middle East says that the reason the “Good Muslims” don’t stand up is because they don’t think we will win.
Thank You Charles. No apologies, and you are in NO WAY! “Dumb”. It sounds like you just opened your eyes a little wider, and listened to yourself. You knew something wasn’t quite right with what you were hearing, and you questioned it. I hear people regurgitating the liberal media, and the re-written histories of Hollywood’s movies, and it amazes me. It is no wonder that tabloid babies with two alien heads still outsells the LA Times. It is frightening.
History has proven time and time again that hatred is a powerful tool to help control the masses. Get people angry enough and they stop thinking for themselves.
I feel like I stumbled on to some sort of underground with this site. I am amazed at the LACK of hatred by US “Anti-Gay conservatives” (with only a couple of exceptions). You are helping to restore my faith in Human Beings.
To the few, I ask you to think about the strongest attraction you have had for your wife (or what ever adult), and ask yourself what control you had over that attraction. It can consume you (or you weren’t in Love). Now tell yourself that your CHOICE was wrong, and you can’t be together.
Thanks Again Charles
Joe, enough with the relativism. I realize you guys eat, drink and shyt the stuff your entire lives, but no Islam is inherently different than Christianity. And no, no one ever said that all Muslims are bad or evil. That’s the fever swamp you call a mind talking. However, to really understand the differences, you need to go back to the progenitors of each faith. Jesus, whether you think of him as a fable or a real human being as the son of God, was peaceful. He wasn’t a pacifist, but he tought peace. He taught compassion. He espoused the idea of separation of church/faith and state. He also was completely for choice. Personal choice. Free will was God’s greatest gift that Jesus tried to impart to us. Now onto Muhammed. A murderer. A rapist. A pedophile. A land grabber. A brilliant military mind. Now, some argue that those were socially accepted constructs in his day so hey, who cares. However, all that does is make him human, with all it’s attendant deficiencies.
Has Christianity been bastardized, abused and grotesquely mutilated by scores of its practitioners over the years? Of course. But that is not an idictment on the pure faith called Christianity. It’s practiced by humans, flawed and lost. We need more Christians to embrace the tenants of Christ. Has Islam stuck true to its founder’s intents? Unfortunately, for way too many, it has. Again, not an idictment on all Muslims as many of them (previously mentioned) rationalize Muhammed’s known deeds, by saying that’s the way it was. He did what he had to do, to spread the faith. That’s a plausible line. But, today, these are for the most part peaceful (as much as humans can possibly be I guess), law abiding (whether sharia or western law) citizens of the world. And of course the vast majority of Muslims aren’t Muhammadens. However, far too many are. We need more Muslems to eschew the original intent and teachings of Muhammed. The point is that you don’t judge a faith by it’s flawed practitioners. You judge the practitioners. You judge it by the original intent and original actions. The relativism argument doesn’t fly.
Denise, they’re also afraid to die. I wonder why that is?
All are welcome here. Welcome.
Joe M has tossed an irrelevant firebrand into the matter. Under the theocratic civil government of the ancient Hebrews, you would also be executed if you were caught gathering firewood on Saturday. Funny that nobody makes a stink about that today. Oh wait, we’re in the New Testament church age. Much more to the point is that willful homosexual conduct displeases God and will continue to displease God no matter what the law of any country celebrates, permits, or bans.
Thanks for writing this. Born-Again Christians like me do believe that your lifestyle is wrong and contrary to God’s law, but the worst we would do is try and win you over to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. The Moslems want to push a wall over you, as the Koran dictates, or failing that to just kill you in whatever fashion is most expedient and spectacular. I am glad someone can see the difference.
Joe, Joe, Joe,
The Bible is not a mere book of rules. It is a narrative. The narrative shows in context what Jews are and what Christians are and how both came to be and what it means to be either one. The civil government of the Hebrews has ended, and Christians aren’t commanded to put it back together. You will search the entire New Testament in vain for a suggestion that it is right for a Christian to engage in violence for any purpose beyond self defense. Moreover you will see that for certain purposes, relinquishing even that is right. This is not to say that God will fail to swing the hammer down on sin personally Himself, particularly in the last days and culminating in eternity. So there is freedom, but there remains a warning.
Great article. Only 2 points of partial disagreement:
1. Israel hasn’t always been a perfect nation. While they have the right to stop the Hamas rocket attacks, their invasion of Gaza is way over the line. Over 500 Palestinian civilians have been killed. Sometimes Israel is its own worst enemy. And since the US supports it, we get the blame by association leading to some of the terrorist attacks. I’m not excusing any action by terrorists – just saying that the Mid-East is a very complicated place and we can’t just blindly support every Israeli action.
2. While fundamentalist Islam is a threat to the West, not every Muslim or Arab is evil. Many of the Muslim and Arab immigrants to the US and Europe left their countries to get away from the extreme aspects of that culture.
Many Islamists say that if they could make a “true” Islamic government then they could make a powerful and perfect country. That’s not true. Iran has had an Islamic government since 1979. Its in shambles. The majority of the people there are unhappy and can’t stand the gov’t. Little known to the West, many Iranians are turning to Christianity in secret. Its estimated that as many as 1 million Iranians are secretly Christians.
That’s why we need to be careful with how we deal with the Middle East. An attack on Iran by Israel with or without the US could turn a large number of Iranians from potential friends into certain enemies.
Brilliant and moving letter. Thank you.
And God bless you. I am conservative Catholic. I regard homosexuality as a perversion. Nonetheless, I regard you as a brave man, braver than I’d be in your shoes, and a man of integrity. I salute you.
I also believe that you are a divine being, an immortal soul, created in the image of that perfect and perfectly beautiful being we call God, and being we praise and whom no man can comprehend. I think there is something eternal, shining, and lovely beyond description in every man, that thing we call a soul — and the soul is the thing no one can comprehend.
Yours is a beautiful soul.
What few today seem to understand is the difference between toleration and approval. I don’t approve of your sins — I would be your enemy if I did approve of your sins, some to think of it, as much as if a doctor applauded the spread of a disease — but I have my own sins to worry about, so I don’t condemn you. In any case, since the sins in my black conscience are the ones I needs must answer for, I’d be a fool (or more of a fool, come to think of it) to condemn you.
Here is what you are going to discover now that you are out of the closet for the second time, and it will shock you. There are people (on the Left) who approve of your homosexuality but who do not approve of you. Expect a lot of hate mail from them. There are people who approve of you but not of your homosexuality (on the Right). Expect friendly notes from us.
Thank you again for your honesty and bravery and largeness of heart. Your letter is an inspiration to me.
Joe, Joe, Joe,
Much of the confusion comes from the fact that the Old Testament puts the spotlight on the Hebrews while the New Testament puts the spotlight on a church which quickly became predominantly Gentile. There were different rules. A Gentile in the Old Testament in a place where the Mosaic law was enforced could commit himself to Judaism, but if he did not then a lesser set of rules (considered inherited from Noah) applied. The Old Testament requirements on personal life continue to serve as a gauge of conduct for Jews, but the circumstances under which they were commanded to be enforced by a Jewish civil government (notwithstanding the modern country of Israel) have gone. But not so fast, God always considered personal homosexual conduct to be wrong for both Jews and Gentiles. So wrong, in fact, that God would cause a land to “vomit out” a people far gone in that sin (my guess is that it was through permitting them to be consumed in obsessive self destructive acts).
Just so you know…it is not just you big Hollywood types that get the cold dumb stare and incredulous responses from the open-minded Liberal elite.
I made the error in judgement of posting your wonderful piece to my Facebook account. I was even a bit cowardly, calling it “a provocative perspective” instead of saying “Wow- this is a great piece,” and look at the first reply I get:
“The guy calls Islam a “weird religion”, objects to a TV station wishing its Muslim viewers a Happy Ramadan, and proudly admits he thought Israel was an island like Great Britain until he was 41! I don’t think he’s woken up from the nightmare of being dumb just yet.”
These people CANNOT see the forest for the trees. KEep up the good work!
I understand every word you speak. Wecome to America and all that has made it great. It is truly the city on the hill as you have found out. But, as you have learned it is a place of fighters not talking sticks. It does not stay on the hill unless people like you fight for it — which is what you have also learned.
Enlightenmnt comes to one when they don’t expect it from places hey never look. You are fortunate to have experienced it and can tell others what you have found.
Thank you.
What Jesus gave credence to — that ball gets knocked out of the park real quick. He affirmed the entire Old Testament scripture as a whole. He even told his Jewish followers (he seemed to have had few Gentile followers before his crucifixion) to obey the temple authorities who sat in Moses’ seat. What happened is the whole Jewish governmental system got destroyed in the late first century when it was cruelly overrun by Romans, who had merely been tolerating it up to that point. The result: nobody’s sitting in Moses’ seat now. If certain Christian expectations are correct, the next to sit in that seat will be Jesus Christ himself at his return. This event will be very obvious when it happens.
I hope this is just a first step toward sanity by the writer. Way too much gay agit-prop. Homosexuals have never been denied equal rights in education, empolyment, housing, ballot box and the ‘right’ to marry that they want is denied to all equally (oddly they want it for gays only, not non-gays) and the marriage they reject is open to all. The overwhelming majority of violence done to gays is by gays, not ‘homophobes’. Homosexuals don’t want marriage, as proven by the fact that in every country where it is legal, only a tiny percentaqge of gays bother with it and those that do remain stunningly promiscuous and the ‘marriages’ short-lived. What gays want is to destroy the religiously based social norm that says homosexuality it not normal. This country exists because people of a religion wanted to come here and believe what the Bible tought without persecution. The ‘normalization’ of homosexuality can’t happen without the demonization (already well underway) and ultimately the criminalization (just wait for Obama’s judges) of the very faith this country owes it’s very existance to. He talks plenty about Nazi’s but doesn’t mention that gays brought the Hitler to power. Nobody knows how sexual orientation is developed, but gays are born with the same heterosexual reproductive plumbing as the rest of us. It is neither genetic nor benign and the decision to indulge the desire is a conscious one even if the acquisition of the desire is not a conscious choice.
==Well seeing as he [Jesus] said nothing about homosexuality, that would sound like it’s OK with him.==
Except that Jesus was God on Earth. So, where God says that He detests homosexuality, Jesus says He detests homosexuality.
And I’m sure underneath, the church folk do not fully approve of how we live. Maybe some do. But newsflash: I don’t have to approve of how they live either. And none of us is killing the other. They are not the enemy.
Something I’ve been saying for years, the left isn’t my enemy, my enemy wants to literally kill, or enslave me.
Seems to me this attitude on the left you’ve identified goes back a ways. Look how they enabled the communists, and more recently, how organizations like NOW defended O.J. (Read Tammy Bruce’s book if you want the history of that.)
==Well seeing as he said nothing about homosexuality, that would sound like it’s OK with him.==
Except that Jesus was God on Earth. So, where God says He detests homosexuality, Jesus says He detests homosexuality.
Charles,
Great letter and the last time I checked, we are all sinners.
One of the most outstanding blog entries I have ever read.
Thank you.
Charles…now you’ve done it. You’d better duck and cover since you’ve just made a Palin sized target of yourself. The modern American Left has the sense of humor of a hippo with a toothache, and your manifesto will indeed make you a target for their vicious acrimony. “Thou shalt tolerate no gays, women, or minorities to leave the reservation” sayeth the Liberal handbook, and a special derision is reserved for gays who espouse any ideology other than the neo-Marxist, environ-extremist, white/Christian hating, anti-American one. You are very brave, and very correct. Thus, you’d better buckle up. The hate-mongers and useful idiots will be at your door shortly. Ironic, isn’t it?
Charles,
It is really refreshing to finally hear a critical examination of how we deal with PC issues. You blame the media for your unenlightened state prior to taking responsibility for your own education.
Fortunately we have a “new media” where a story like yours can be shared without being PC filtered. I too have read many of the stories you shared.
Paul- you affirm Charles’ position by dancing around the truth in order to remain passive. Seems he would be a good example for you to follow.

Your journey sounds similar to my own except it was the Angry Feminist angle.
Same here.
Thank you so much Charles for taking the time to write such an outstanding piece.
I’ll definitely be tossing up a post w/link over at SondraK.
What a wonderful way to end the week …so incredibly inspiring.
Charles,
May I have the honor and priveledge of meeting you in person to look into your eyes and tell you in person how much I respect and admire you.
I am humbled by the quality of the people of ACT for America and cannot be more proud to have you as a member of my organization and hopefully also a friend.
People like you Charles change the world one person at a time. I want to thank everyone who wrote a comment about your fantastic writing. I was riveted reading all your article as well as every single comment posted. I urge everyone reading this to visit our website http://www.actforamerica.org and join us so together we can change the world for the better and fight hatred, bigotry and intolerance in the name of any religion.

I’m not gay, but a friend of mine sent me a link to this article after I told him what I thought of the ‘gay reactions’ to Prop-8 in California (sparing details, my thoughts were generally negative). I’m an Atheist with generally conservative views, and for the past 25 years it has been my experience that when it came to ideas, gays seemed un-interested — all they wanted was to indulge themselves the fantasies of in an all-male ”Playboy” (or ”Playguy” since it’s gay) lifestyle.
I concur with Cmaille Paglia’s views that homosexuality has no genetic basis, and I do not think governments or other institutions should be obliged to promote the lifestyle. But by ths same token it seems that as long as we’re talking about conduct and behavior between consenting adults, there is no reason to officially sanction attacking or killing people either.
I had pretty much ‘written off’ homosexuals as hopeless: politically correct know-nothings whose ideas were molded by the media, and whose focus was entirely narcisistic. Your piece is cause to modify that view. It is indeed refreshing to read that people who are normally “liberals” can become realists (conservatives) when mugged by reality.
As you note, Islam (the ideology) is a major and growing threat to the Western Intellectual Tradition (a term coined by Jacob Bronowski and Bruce Mazlish about 40 years ago).
It is no secret that the ‘decadence’ of the west is frequently cited as an evil which must be eliminated from the world as part of the purification needed for Islamic rule. That decadence includes homosexuality, women’s equality, the secular rule of law, and many “inalienable rights” (such as those recognized and enumerated in the Bill Of Rights). Islam wants to do away with all of it.
You are correct thst many Muslims coming here to the United States believe in the fundamentalist teachings that are now permeating Europe, and which have been dominant in the middle East for centuries. The Sharia Law teaches people to root out that which does not conform with the teachings of A Caliphate or other recorgnized Islamic authorities. Toward that end, the political movement to make Islam an imperial power is blended with an ideology that permits eradicating that which would stop, weaken, or slow the advance of Islam.
Good job. Keep up the good work. As it was in the time of Erich Fromm (author of “Man’s Search For Meaning”), Political Correctness remains the silent evil that allows more vocal evil to triumph.
So remember: conservatives are not your friends either. Their ideological roots come from the same forces behind every fascist regime that has sprouted up over the past 100 years, and the Southern voters who has put them in power over the past 30 years are same people (and their children) who found racial segregation perfectly acceptable, and still do.
Lies, all lies.
I was a great day when this ol’ lesbian finally skedaddled off the liberal plantation and into the welcoming arms of the conservative underground railroad …never once looking back.
Perhaps one day, you too will find a way out.
In 2001, you did not know about radical Islam or where Israel was located on the map?? That says a lot. I can choose to be straight or gay, that is a choice just like being an American is a choice. At least you have enough intelligence to choose to be a conservative.
Amazing, Charles! I’ll be looking for your byline from now on.
I can pretty well guarantee that conservatives have far less of a problem with you being gay than liberal gays do with you being conservative. That pretty well applies to any minority conservatives.
John 1/16 12:31 PM sez: “However, I think you misinterpret the sentiments of many liberals in regards to tolerance: many believe there is a level of civility we must all respect between cultures and ideologies in order to enjoy any sort of peace in this world…”
and he also sez: “Personally, I don’t see much difference between militant Islam and the religious right in this country, given the not-too-distant history of injustice at their hands. Granted, they don’t behead people, but a few of them would probably enjoy opening a few Zyklon-B canisters in a shower full of gays.”
Way to show that liberal tolerance for people who disagree with you, John! You have directly proven the point of Charles’s letter.
“So remember: conservatives are not your friends either. Their ideological roots come from the same forces behind every fascist regime that has sprouted up over the past 100 years, and the Southern voters who has put them in power over the past 30 years are same people (and their children) who found racial segregation perfectly acceptable, and still do. Step away from the dark side, Charles.”
Fascism, remember, was National Socialism; the Soviet Union was as repressive as Nazi Germany (more oblique in starving the kulaks rather than gassing them, but far more prolific in the numbers they killed); and Jim Crow segregation was a Democratic Party response to Republican enfranchisement of Black Americans (the ‘Solid South’ until 1948 referred to the solid Democratic Party stranglehold on Southern politics, and good ol’ Bull Connor was a Democratic county committeeman — if you don’t believe me, read some history books). Step out of the pit of ignorance, John: the sunlight will only hurt your eyes for a little while, and then you will marvel at seeing the world as it really is.
[...] a long, but quite powerful, piece on BigHollywood.com, GayPatriot reader Charles Winecoff talks about his coming out as a [...]
Very well done. You see the light. While we all might have our differences, we can mostly agree to live and let live.
As for the alternative, those you have angered won’t have to worry if they get their wish. It won’t matter.
Honestly as a straight guy, I was not sure what to expect. I started to read the article based on the fact that if it was on this site it could not be all that bad. I am glad I did continue to read. It gave me a perspective I had not considered before, which I find very enlightening. Also, I absolutely agree, we need to stop worrying about petty differences and work together.
This has to be one the best articles I have ever read.
Beautifully written piece, Mr. Winecoff. One of the finest I’ve ever read. You managed to take apart the intolerance that is so prevalent on the Left without sounding angry while doing it. Perhaps it will be the voices of those formerly on the Left who will finally stop the nonsense that has been going on during the Bush years.
I used to spend much of my time on a Liberal message board. I had many good friends there, although I disagreed with their opinions much of the time. The thing was, we were fine as long as I tempered my opinion and didn’t challenge them too strongly. Nevermind the opinions included things like, “George Bush is going to suspend the Constitution and declare himself King,” or “Christians are going to take over the government and kill the non-believers,” or “Christianity is just as violent is Islam, as evidenced by abortion clinic bombings (never mind the 10,000 – 1 ratio).” The minute I stood up for things I believed in, I was no longer welcome in their house. That’s how the Left defines tolerance.
You realizations are long overdue, but your much too old for childlike statements such as “But there is hope as long as we like ourselves enough to recognize danger and do something about it.
We are the only ones who can make a difference and keep an eye on the ball.”…..you offer no solutions, you make no statements about killing the bad guys.
…..when forced, men have to fight bad people…for the sake of their lives, and they fight with guns…among other things; children ask others to take care of them and protect them from bad people. You my pussified friend, are still a child.
Did you vote for Obama? He wants our guns. He wants to further infect our dying culture with fascism, socialism, communism, racism, and a mindless class of drones who have little to no capacity for critical thought. At least you acknowledge that not all cultures are equal. Do you donate to the NRA? The NRA is fighting and standing up for a part our culture, donate to them. Vote for politicians who want to put a stop to illegal immigration (when millions of people invade a culture at once, it overwhelms the existing culture….especially when the invaders don’t value education, don’t speak our language, and don’t care to assimilate). And get your homo ass to a church of your choosing (go with the don’t ask, don’t tell method), it might give you the courage to grow up.
So those who disagree that melding one’s sexual proclivities to their “Human Identity” means they are “Right Wing Bigots”? My position is this, why does one engaging in public commentary about contemporary issues such as radical Islam and the Left’s bizarre cooperation with it, begin their piece by first proclaiming to the world who they have sex with? What does this say about their character? If the purpose is to equate “Public Sexuality” with “Freedom” and that “Sexual Freedom” is the most beloved and cherished value that truly “Defines American Greatness” then I would say you are a pretty sick demented individual who is a slave to your physical senses. Any other motivation other than this would signal somone’s inability to convey linear coherent thought into the written word.
If there was such a thing as a guaranteed right to “Sexual Freedom” (And there is not) then the government wouldn’t obviously be in the business of intense involvement and regulation through subsidized abortions, sex-ed classes in the schools, birth-control programs, social programs for single mothers, and tracking its burdensome economic consequences and “Death Filled” statistics via the Centers for Disease Control.
So let’s get this nice and sparklingly clear “Charlie” don’t confuse “Freedom” with “License”. Freedom is NOT License. You also do not have a Constitutional Right to “Not Feel Guilty”. There is nothing in the Constitution guaranteeing that right. Don’t try to advance the canard that your “Guilt” is merely the consequences of an ignorant, mean and disapproving society…this is a denial of Natural Law. People have guilt for a whole slew of reasons and rightly so. People do bad or questionable things every day. Their “Guilt” is not somebody else’s “Fault”. Dealing with “Guilt” through personal responsibility is a sign of maturity. I’m sorry you feel “Slighted” for the grave injustice that the American Public did not take a vested interest in what stimulates yours and many others genitals and its comprehensive implications at some earlier point in our history and therefore did not jump post haste into the creation of a public legal framework to promote, nurture and protect its special honored place in our constitution.
Believe it or not “Charles” there are people on this planet who believe that personal sexual constraint is a “Good” thing and that identifying your whole being with your sexuality is a “Bad” thing. (Some of them are not even “Rednecks”…..Shock…they might even be educated…Double Shock) Possibly they believe these things because they understand the full conscious implications of the unrestrained application of their own sexual appetites and realize that…”Hmmmm if I allow the monster to run free, un-caged, this could be a problem for me and many others”. (I.E This is known as the concept of “Consequences” typically step 1 in the realization that you may be turning into a Conservative…you haven’t finished this lesson yet but you are getting there)
These groups of people who have adopted a “Sexual Ethic” and/or a “Moral Code” have a “Right” to
1. To exist in the Public Square, stand and be recognized.
2. Engage in Debate in the Public Square without being called a “Bigot”
3. Vote in the Public Square on laws that affect the Culture on all issues especially this one
4. Have a Constitutional Right to disagree with your “Sexual Identity” Politics and the knee-jerk Marxist taxonomic tendencies of the Left and their long term agendas with big government.
Furthermore, I’m glad you have identified the dangers of Leftists and Radical Islamists getting together for tea. This is a phenomenon that we conservatives have noticed about Leftists for a long time, that they have a fundamental misunderstanding about Freedom, Truth and its applications in personal responsibility and in society in general. My suggestion is don’t take your “Discovery” to that next step which you seem to very subtly imply throughout the body of your document. That Christians who do not comply with your lifestyle are the next on your “List” of “Freedom Haters”. (Remember today’s lesson of “Freedom vs. License”?) Rather look much much harder and longer in the mirror when contemplating all these grand thoughts of yours.
This article is dnyamite and so very much needed. I think many had the same journey you did growing up on television and sadly lacking in knowledge of history. That you are a member of Act!for America says it all and that you are willing to suffer the stings and barbs of ‘polite’ and ‘politically correct’ society to do so.
As you make perfectly clear and so does Brigette. We are in for the fight of our lives and we had better catch up.
Well written, moving and very important reading.
Poster “A Christian” asks “What did Jesus say?” and “I’m not a Paulian”. Well Christians know what the Bible says “All Scripture is given under inspiration of the Holy Spirit and not of private interpretation”…which means that what Paul (and all other New Testament writers) says is what Jesus taught them, (”This I will teach you and much more and bring it to yor remembrance later”), that they remembered and wrote down. Jesus said “Man does not live by bread alone, but by ever word that proceeds from the mouth of God”. At the time He said that, the only Word of God was the Hebrew bible, the Old Testament where homosexuality is condemned in unambiguous terms. And since “A Christian” knows that Jesus said “the Father and I are One” he knows that the word of the Father is also the word of the Son…
Wonderful piece Charles, and quite accurate. You are a Patriot. Most of the replys you received are from other Patriots as well. But there is always room for humor and as expected, a few obviously very twisted Pinheads did not disappoint us.
I can pretty well guarantee that conservatives have far less of a problem with you being gay than liberal gays do with you being conservative.
Brother, you ain’t kiddin’.
I was just talking to a liberal gay co-worker’s about our current budget mess here in California when I made a somewhat joking suggestion that I’d love to see Schwarzenegger replace with a more money-savy Mitt Romney.
Of course, his response was oh so predictable …“What are you nuts? He’ll have us all in concentration camps with pink triangles …he’ll deport poor little illegal aliens …racist, anti-gay, blah, blah, blah…”
My response …“Nevermind” …
Good piece. It needed to be said. I became disillusioned when the types who defend free speech when it came to criticizing Christianity were utterly silent or worse when the topic was Islam, such as the cartoon riots. And I am an atheist. At the time I would have called myself a liberal and I thought other liberals would be calling for the blood of these theocratic Islamic maniacs who riot (over insulting cartoons), kill artists (Theo), beat and kill gays, etc. Too often the words “racism” and “bigotry” are used to deflect legitimate criticism. Evidently some cultures are more equal than others.
Thanks for sharing. Great post.
A CHRISTIAN said: “Now, if you espouse Christianity as your faith, drop the self-righteous Pharisee behaviour and act as CHRISTians. You know not the mind of God nor all of His intentions. We all come before Him alone.”
Passing judgment on the body of Christ are we?
Mathew 5:17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.
Genesis 2:23 The man said,
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman, [j] ‘
for she was taken out of man.”
24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
A man will be united to his WIFE and they will be one flesh. Pretty simply to me and far from legalistic.
But I digress. Consider this. Christianity has turned many people away from Christ for seemingly trying to force their belief upon them. Hence the term “Bible-thumpers”. Ironically the homosexual community now suffers from the very same problem. They wish to be accepted and to be treated fairly, as do most people but problem is they are, through their “gay pride” parades, their want to force society to recognize their “unions” as being sanctified by God, and their attempts to indoctrinate our children into believing the same, have been mocking our beliefs as they try to force their own beliefs and morals upon society. How would you expect society to react? Collectively they are saying “don’t tell me what to do”. Ask nicely and play nicely and people tend to come around eventually but start demanding they treat you a certain way or making special concessions for you and you will find yourself receiving quite the opposite.
You see a similar thing happening between God and Humanity. God says you must behave a certain way and Humanity as a whole says, “stop telling me what to do”. In acts of rebellion many adopt destructive patterns like lying, stealing, adultery and a host of other sins, including homosexuality.
Despite this God has extended his hand in forgiveness through Christ Jesus. All we need do is take his hand. We will stumble but once we have taken his hand he will never let us fall.
Well done, and thank you for writing this piece. Yours is a voice of reason, and basically, I’m thrilled.
I’m a white Christian girl who knows that God loves each and every gay person out there, and I think of them accordingly. I’d be just as likely to hug or shake hands with a gay person as a straight one. And I think you should have the right to civil unions, and I think Christians are silly if they don’t want to grant that. So basically, I receive your article warmly, my Christian faith in no way tells me I must do otherwise because you are gay. That’s something PEOPLE do, not God does. Just want to reinforce what you already seem to know–that not all of us are like that. God bless you, friend.
Charles Winecoff,
You have written a timely microcosmic screed, full of the heartfelt conviction of a preponderance of Americans, whoever they are and whereever they might be found, in this fantastic state.
Joe M’s ‘loyal opposition’ is a shame, but his is the reality, and the weakness, of the great experiment that is the United States of America.
It’s a blog, not a book.
You can donate money in my name to pretty much anything Brigitte Gabriel does, that chick has stones.
Thanks for the article Charles. As a straight-laced Catholic farmboy of conservative lineage married to the same great woman for 15 years, I want to tell you something that probably doesn’t shock you now but probably would have in the past. Even knowing that you are gay, you a just Charles the great American to me and probably a strong plurality of most conservatives. That’s how most conservatives are. What you do with your private life is none of my business.
I’ve also had the great pleasure of living next door to a great gay couple during the first few years of my marriage. At the time, I was a Correction’s Officer who worked the nightshift. Many people in the neighborhood were stand offish around them, but they were my next door neighbors and I took opportunity to extend my hand in friendship. They watched over my wife and infant son while I was gone at night, and would have done anything necessary to protect them for me.
That kind of friendship is like a rare gem, plus we got great advice on landscaping and interior design. Go figure! There are great folks in all walks of life. I wish you luck in all your endeavors and I’m glad you decided not to just buy the MSNBC type response to conservative folks. I’m glad I stuck my hand out in friendship to Rick and Steve or I’d have never known the great relationship my wife and I had with some really great neighbors. I try never to look at anyone as a member of this or that group only as individuals.
Have a great weekend,
Tim
Wow. You get it. I am a Bible believing Christian and am more and more feeling the heat for it. We get nothing but bad press from the main stream media. Your article was fabulous. Naturally, as a Christian, I cannot go along with your homosexuality but I can love you anyway. Jesus was killed by the religious people of His day. He loved the sinners and if He were here today, He would be the first to sit down with you and talk about having a relationship with His Father. He didn’t come to condemn the world but to save it. We are all sinners and need His forgiveness. Gays have worked hard to have their particular sin accepted by the public. Well, He would have said, all men (and women) have sinned. It doesn’t matter the particular one. Yours is more evident than mine. That is not condemnation. It would be too religious of me to pick on your choice. I live a celibate life style happily in order to stay in fellowship with the lover of my soul. I want you to know that there is something higher and better than what you have. I believe that the threat of Islam is real and that you have done a great thing by writing about it.
This was a superb read. It inspires me. This was written from the heart. The article references Ayaan Hirsi-Ali,a woman who is an example of integrity, honesty and self-respect. Ms. Ali is probably the most intelligent woman in America, who does not mince words about the American people’s willingness to lower the moral standard when it comes to other, non-white cultures and peoples. There is a great video on the C-Span site featuring Ayaan Hirsi-Ali at the National Press Club. I wont post a link, but the video can be found easily on the site. I encourage people to view it.
Charles, thank you for your post – and conservatives in Hollywood nowadays feel what it was like to be gay in the 1950s, believe me! I’m not gay, but I never thought I would have to keep my views and opinions to myself, even with friends I’ve known for years.
Dude, you know all the people agreeing with you here still think you’re just a lousy f@g.
It has always baffled me how so many left-leaning liberals take the Islamic threat so lightly when they are the ones who will be the first to slaughtered when Sharia is implemented in the U.S. Gays and women’s libbers won’t last long at the hand of Wahabbists. Beheadings and summary executions on the streets of NYC, LA and Miami will be commonplace. The Move On people and ACLU nuts just don’t have it figured out. They think that if they oppose the conservatives who clearly recognize the threat of Islam, by calling them bigots, racists and fear mongers, then the Islamists will offer them some kind of reward or protection when they take over our society. What a surprise they are in for!
Great post. Thank you.
Enjoyed the read, Charles. Well done and thought provoking on so many levels. I would love to see someone in Hollywood capture these ideas and put form into characters and place and identifiable situations, so that others can see and grasp what’s slithering through the American Pie. Maybe you’ll be the one to bring that to fruition.
Wonderful article which I really enjoyed reading. Just wanted to reply to STEVE at 7:56 and his opinion. Speak for yourself – your cynical comment is not needed nor accurate.
Geez! I admire your courage and outrage. Finally someone has put to words what i have felt for years. No one has stopped us from doing anything, barring anything illegal. America is the greatest country in the world. I have just read Ali’s book and was amazed hos little we know about the real threat around us. It is slowly eroding Europe into a paralyzed state. We take so much for granted.
Bravo
That’s not a “second coming out”. It’s a first awakening.
Good for you! Well written, too.
This a great story. It is interesting the few references that are made to Hitler/Nazis. Do the Libs and for that matter most Americans actually realize that a new era of National Socialism has dawned on the USA – with their active participation? Obama and this political machine are now talking about putting boots on the grounds in order to sustain the political momentum. The boots are mostly 20something MTV adults who idealize a cult figure. Flash back 1930: The cult figure was Adolf Hitler and the boots on the ground then were also 20something called “Sturmabteilung” (in english Storm Troopers or Assault Detachment or Assault Section or Brown shirts). Fast forward post world war II: East Germany establishes the FDJ or Free Germany Youth movement.
Now some of you will ask what has that got to do with anything: Everything. The purpose of the above organization was to enforce the political system and viewpoints of the ruling class at all costs. That includes denunciation of friends, family members, members of individual groups (religious, economic, cultural) and anyone that is just different. Today you can substitute Storm troopers with the words MSM, the Democratic Party and Hollywood. These institutions are actively engaged in enforcing the view of a totalitarian system. The fact that individuals are now openly and ruthlessly attacked for their lifestyle and opinions is clearly an indication of a totalitarianism . The day is not far off when your children are openly instructed to tell about your families political view, marital problems, what TV they watch, their lifestyle, what car they drive, who they socialize with etc. The children will be used as a spring board to make sure that conformity is the norm.
What the hell is he talking about ???? Well I am a post world warII baby, born and raised in East Germany until my parents and I took a permanent leave of absence from the workers paradise in 1970. I was a member of the FDJ and I know the pressure that was applied to “tell on my parents” The rhetoric of the Socialist then is no different then the words that come out of Obama”s mouth and the three institutions above. And some of you who read this don’t think for a minute this is fiction. The intolerance that Mr.W experienced will only increase exponentially. ” Now, however, I often feel as if I’ve been shoved right back into the closet by the very people who go around espousing diversity and equal rights and compassion – fellow gay people and “sophisticated” urban friends who in fact can’t tolerate an idea that’s not out of the playbook” .It is not necessary to send people to re-education camps, labour camps or gulags whatever the name might be. You simply intimidate to make people compliant. In modern terms it is called “political correctness”. Watch the DVD “the life of others” and you will get a pretty good idea of what is coming.
And Mr.W one advice: your infatuation with Europe is misplaced. As Mr. Kavlan stated in his column yesterday:”And look at how leftist, anti-patriotic and anti-religious policies in Europe have turned a once-great culture into a corpse that is being consumed by Islamo-fascist bacteria as we watch.” I know because I travel there every year and it is frightening. But this is exactly what our future will be – so safe yourself the money because you will experience Europe right here.
Outstanding article, Charles.
Charles, thanks for joining us. Welcome.
Amen, and thank you for coming out… again!
I read every word, literally nodding in agreement, sentence after sentence.
Sometimes I reread whole paragraphs, wishing I could instantly commit them to memory to quote at the right time to folks who need to pause and think. My memory isn’t that good so I’ve done the next best thing – copied and saved, bookmarked. Moveon.org doesn’t stand a chance against your kind of honesty. Thank you.
For this paragraph alone, this should be sent around the world. “Almost everyone I know goes to a therapist. It’s a very sick dichotomy.”
Interesting article….. We support all gays.
Charles, thank you for your post. Your courage is inspiring. Brigitte Gabriel wants to meet you! She is one of my heroes. You should meet her and post an update. I find it scary when the networks spend thousands of hours on global warming but barely mentions Islamic terrorism. Bless you!
My Hollywood lib friend — your point of view is most welcome; and not just because i agree with most of what you wrote. But b/c I believe you have a right to express your voice/opinion, just like i have a right to engage you and share my opinions. this dialog or dialectic is not something that you typically find in SF or NY or on the left. why? b/c liberal fascism exists and needs to have like-minded liberal folks like yourself stand up to it. it starts there and continues against the other evil on this planet, radical islam. my friend, we are all in this together, and i welcome you! thanks for your excellent piece… Jg.
Lovely post, thank you. Personal, reflective, thoughtful and beautifully expressed.
There are few more lonely people in the world than a same-sex oriented boy or girl reaching puberty in a monotheist religious family and community which says they have no place in society or the eyes of God. The same-sex oriented have been anathematised in part because they have been such easy, isolated targets. Thanks to modern communication, transportation and mass urbanisation, less so they they used to be though, even in the USofA, people are still killed for their sexuality (or even, in the case of a man murdered recently in New York because he was being affectionate in public with his own brother, what hating thugs think is their sexuality). And there has been a long history of attempted boycotts against positive representations of homosexuals in film and TV, against recognising the lives they build together, and so forth: to deny us any social place at all, let alone equal protection of the laws.
But the problem is far worse in most of the Islamic world. Homosexuals are judicially murdered in Iran at a rate we have not seen in the West (apart from the Holocaust) for a couple of centuries.
And, as you say, radical Islam is everyone’s enemy who does not submit to their particular vision of Islam. Including other Muslims (indeed, particularly other Muslims). We have to take their beliefs seriously: not, as MoveOn.org and similar want to do, use delusions about them as talking points in local political disputes.
The biggest mistake people made with Hitler was to not believe he meant what he said he was about. But he really did mean to seize Lebensraum for a Judenfrei Reich. And the jihadis really do aspire to an ever-expanding, and ultimately global, caliphate.
Well said and much appreciated! Welcome home, relax and stay a while.
Most excellent piece. Very well said. Thank you.
Great read…and spot on!!!!
Great article!! =) I’ve never understood why liberal feminists and homosexuals are willing to “excuse” radical Islam, when their rights would be eliminated under Sharia Law.
I am a conservative libertarian and I could not agree with you more.
This is America and regardless of our individual politics we all can and should agree that Islamofacism is a cancer to our way of life.
Gays having to leave Amsterdam? England giving in to Sharia law?
If we all truly believe in freedom we will not allow these groups to dictate how we live.
As far as national dialogue I am very tired of no one being truly tolerant of other views. I often see the word hate in e-mails and cruel jokes being the norm. I am disgusted when either side does it. Why have we become a nation that feels we have to mock and hate those we don’t agree with?
I’ll be honest I vote Republican as they USED TO be the closest to my views but even as strongly as I disagree with those on the left I don’t hate them. But I do find lately it has been more so the left that has been closed minded to any other point of view.
The treatment of George Bush these past years has been a disgrace. The way Palin was treated was shameful.
PLEASE let’s all move on and debate and discuss without being cruel and hurtful. I don’t agree with Obama on much of anything but he is now my President and I will give him the respect he deserves. Together let’s fight to make this country one where we can all fight like hell in the debate ring but still respect eachother and even go out for a drink afterwards. We all can agree we want freedom, right?
Amazing piece! I hope you get through all the comments. I lived in West Hollywood for over 20 years. My gay friends who are conservative know I’ll keep their secret. They keep mine as well. None of us are up to the fight of outing ourselves as non-libs. It’s a shame, but somehow we all, gay & straight, find each other.
It was an absolute pleasure reading your journey!
I could have written this (but not nearly as well) because I too
had an ‘awakening’ and a second coming out.
I became a conservative who is gay. And I found that other
conservatives are a whole lot nicer to be around than people on
the Left.
One of the commenters above wrote about gays who want to be
“eternally controversial, rejected, despised, etc”. And it is
true. It is a vocation with them. And the mission is to
destabilize every institution in our society, the Boy Scouts,
the churches, the military, marriage, name it – for the sake
of destroying. Just like radical Islamists want to destroy.
Charles, I believe we met briefly. When we meet again I’m giving you a big hug.
Brigitte Gabriel?
I’m totally jealous.
[...] We Fight.” The most poignant and righteous post was clearly Charles Winecoff’s, “The Awakening of a Dumb (Gay) American.” The comments tell us everything we know about the truth about tolerance on the right. And [...]

‘Cept that those who are born again are not guilty, rather Righteous [John 15:3]
==What did Jesus say about homosexuality?==
Since He was God on Earth, whatever God said.
==What did JESUS say about it?==
Jesus was God on Earth. “God among us.” So, whatever God said about it, Jesus said.
==I know He did say these things:
“Judge not lest ye shall be judged”…==
Is THAt all He said about “judging”? No.
He was talking about the unrighteous, not the Righteous who He said should judge Righteously — that is, according to the Word of God.

However, those who are born again are not guilty.

The “plank” refers to unrighteousness. He cleans the unrighteousness from those who accept Him into their heart. He takes the plank outta their eyes, or, at least, shows them how to look around that plank.
==…and “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”==
However, that is not worldly “love,” the “love” you apply to Scripture.
Biblical “love” is “unselfish concern for the Salvation of others, as much concern for their Salvation as you have for your own.”
==Now, if you espouse Christianity as your faith, drop the self-righteous Pharisee behaviour and act as CHRISTians.==
What would scoffers know about “acting like a Christian”?
== You know not the mind of God nor all of His intentions.==
(1Co 2:16) For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
We don’t instruct Him, but the Word of God makes His Mind known to us.
(Isa 41:26) Who hath declared from the beginning, that we may know? and beforetime, that we may say, He is righteous? yea, there is none that sheweth, yea, there is none that declareth, yea, there is none that heareth your words.
(Amo 4:13) For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.
(Hos 4:6) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
==We all come before Him alone.==
And those who reject Him will be rejected, and those who bear false witness of Him will be rejected.
If you respond with scripture, respond only with Christ words. I’m a CHRISTIAN not a Paulian.
This was an amazing article.
I travelled to Amsterdam for various cultural experiences some ten years ago (Rijksmuseum, cheese tour, old Europe atmosphere, etc.) and noticed it was very gay friendly. Not being gay, I paid little attention but did see many foreign faces that were Muslim.
I’m one of those who hasn’t paid much attention to the shifts going on in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe, but within this article were descriptions that fill me with dread. Thank you for posting this and so thoughtfully explaining your view.
Amen.
Excellent, excellent piece. Thank you.
I’m confused that no one else saw this as overt nationistic propaganda designed to elicit emotional responses. Nationalism and Patriotism are at opposite ends of the spectrum, though nationalism frequently tries to masquerade as patriotism, and many people buy in.
Your prophetic words about the rigid orthodoxy of todays Left wing were spot on. It didnt take long before the observations you make on the perversion of the “talking stick” mentality to appear in these comments. It was obvious you would soon be labelled defective in some way by your erstwhile compatriots who bristle with righteous indigination you have the temerity to wander off the plantation in this public way.
It is clear to any thinking person that the “establishment” the self congratulatory boomer generation griped and sang about is now them, and that they are guilty of every criticism they made about being deprived a voice, except that it is now by the new cultural groupspeak of popular culture over which they preside.
CORRECTION TO ADD ANSWER
==We all come before Him alone.==
And those who reject Him will be rejected, and those who bear false witness of Him will be rejected.
==If you respond with scripture, respond only with Christ words. I’m a CHRISTIAN not a Paulian.==
The Word is the Word of Christ. The Word of God IS the Christ.
Much of what Mr. Winecoff says is true, but I think a lot of what he says about “liberals” is colored by his surroundings — sounds like a Westsider to me but I have no idea in what part of L.A. he lives and works.
As for mass mailings from MoveOn, I subscribed during the time he cites, and not once did I ever receive a “mass” mailing urging the kind of “tolerance” he describes. Maybe I clicked or unclicked a box somewhere during registration but although I got other email — mostly asking for money or signatures on petitions — I never once received anything remotely like that. I no longer subscribe, just don’t find it that compelling and most politicians are too shrill anyway.
As a white gay man who grew up in Mississippi and moved here from Missouri (way more progressive than you might think), I have always been appalled by the racial prejudice of West Hollywood and Westside gays, which I witnessed personally from the time I moved here in January of 1980 and am fortunate to have never lived west of Normandie Avenue.

==I am a gay man, and I just want to live my life, earn a living and pay my bills. I don’t care who sleeps with who, but I love God …==

==Just a correction to what some have said, which is: “We have been made in the image and likeness of God”. When, in fact, god [sic] has been made in the image and likeness of men.==
Yes, this is the state of affairs today, though men, in reality, cannot ever change God into something THEY want. They like to think they can.
God created Man, originally, in His Image. Man, through disobedience, changed that image into what is not God’s.
God wanted relationship with Man. So, He sent the Christ with the Message of the Offer of Reconciliation. Far too many today reject that Offer.
Accepting the Offer means re-creation in His Image.
Rejecting the Offer means remaining in the image of Adam in disobedience, not on the Image of God. God is not the image of disobedience.
Therefore, there is the original Creation in His Image, then the creation of the image in Man’s disobedience, and, then, the re-created Image in Christ. Only those who are born again are re-created.

Beautiful piece, beautifully written from the heart. Yes, it’s tough being a conservative in California. This piece gives me hope. Because I think that a cultural war is going on in our country, and we are in danger of losing our heritage. The MSM and Hollywood are two of the strongest soldiers in this war, and are nearly invincible. But this website, and it’s amazingly quick popularity, tells me that there are a great many silent soldiers who haven’t given up on America yet. Kudos to Andrew Breitbart. This may be just what is needed to encourage others to come out of their liberal closet and join those of us who use logic to form our values. Charles, thank you for your courage and best of luck to you.
Magnificent, Sir. Among the finest articles I have read on the subject. Hold fast. You’re not alone.
Thank you!
To everyone reading this article.
Don’t just agree with him.
ACT!!!
I had the privilege of attending an ACT! for America workshop this weekend on the East Coast. Brigitte and her team were there.
They are very brave and inspiring.
It’s great that people “come out of the closet” to talk about the greatest threat to freedom and everything that we hold dear — the radical Islamists — but we all must do more.
Go to their site Act for America org.
DONATE!!!
Go to a session.
Becomae a chapter leader!
Get involved.
If not me who?
If not you, who else?
It’s 1938 folks, the Nazis are emboldened and ready to march and everyone is pretending that all is well.
Tell your friends and keep telling people to pass it on.

Do not sit back. It’s us (the world) vs. them (radical Islamists). It’s really that simple folks. Get informed, spread the word and ACT!
We had at least two gay people at this ACT for America conference.
We had some Dems, some Libs, obviously we don’t see eye to eye on everything!
But we all agree that the threat of radcial Islam is a real and present danger to ALL AMERICANS and Europeans an even Muslims who do not follow the Koran as strictly as the radicals think they should!
They have no endgame.
atmay–
Know your enemy.
You are free to live your life as a gay American.
Accept tolerance and don’t expect total acceptance. It’s not going to happen.
There’s a much bigger enemy out there and while the libs have been attacking Bush for the past 8 years and the mainstream media has delighted in bashing Republicans and Christians and conservataives, the force of political correctness has gotten stronger as have our enemeies.
The Fort Dix Six are not an anomaly.
There are homegrown terrorists across the nation waiting for the right time, the right numbers.
Under Sahria law (Muslim law, what they want here and everywhere) they would kill all homosexuals, no questions asked.
So while people are threatening MORMONS becaue of Proposition 8(!), I’d love to see a little assembly and power thrown at radical Muslims in word and deed.
LISTEN — read While Europe Slept by Bruce Bawer.
He happens to be gay, moved to Europe to find “freedom,” and what he has found is startling — Europe is being taken over by intolerant Muslims.
After WHILE EUROPE SLEPT, read Amerca Alone by Marl Styen.
When you’ve digested these two books, you’ll understand that there is no time to waste.
Thanks again, Charles.
Charles,
Self enlightenment, reflected upon and fully understood, is uplifting to that person as can be felt in your marvelous piece. But when shared with others, as you have done, offers a power for societal good that is immeasurable. Thanks, to you and Mr. Breitbart!
people like attmay are the reason that I support prop 8. to these people, like the muslims, it is always something, cuz they have to keep the culture of victimhood alive and working to their benefit.
to the people that have woken up since 9/11 – you’re a little late to the party as the Real Americans have been at work a long time and these kinds of things have been around for a long time and are reinforced by the current parrallel movements by groups such as algayda and the gaystapo
Charles that was stellar. Thank You.
I read every word. Your thoughts on 9/11 and the behavior of liberals was enlightening and intriguing. Your admission of being politically naive made a big connection to my having lived a very similar life in the past eight years, with one of the few exceptions being that I am not gay. Not only are you not alone, my friend, you have helped made me feel less alone for my similar thoughts and opinions. How wonderful that you have the talent to reach people in such a way. I hope there are many homosexuals, young and old, who will be touched by your wonderful writing skills.

Thank you for an amazing read. I would be interested to know what reaction you got from your friends who received this letter…
I’m glad you’re out of both closets! No one should ever be afraid to embrace who they are and to celebrate every breath, every moment of life!
The left and their messages are EVERYWHERE. I can’t avoid it. If a media forum has conservative messages, the content usually involves swipes, distortions, and lies. The message is painted in a very glib or dark manner. If we don’t hurry-up and do something to counter these messages, we’re going to lose every cultural battle.
The cultural landscape is made to believe the liberals and their life philosophies are all delightful, charming, and enchanting—they cause warm fuzzy tingling sensations to run down your legs. If the world would just embrace their beliefs, everyone would live happily ever after. On the other hand, every thing republicans stand for is bad, evil, and corrupt. The left is angelic and the right is demonic.
These messages are pounded into the minds of millions of American’s daily. It doesn’t stop there; I haven’t even mentioned the public schools, colleges and universities, church leadership, etc. Think of the myriad PC commercials advertising left-wing junk. Everyone is involved.
Who is to blame for this left wing epidemic sweeping the nation? Not the democrats, it’s the republicans. The RNC wants to do play nice with the devil. It can’t happen. Dems loathe everything the reps represent. They have no qualms with reneging on agreements. They’ll sure as look us in the eye, smile, shack hands, and agree with us, only to turn the corner and do the exact opposite. Sadly, reps continue to be shocked and suffer a state of disbelief by this type of behavior. Get over it republicans! Fight the good fight and stop trying to cozy up with the political faction that despises you.
You’d think that with all the intelligent, successful, and highly accomplished republicans in the workforce, we’d never lose an election. I’m baffled by how many smart people come out of business schools with advertising, sales, and marketing degrees in hand then go to work for a company where they’re required to practice their acquired skill set, yet don’t produce conservative messages for their audience. Nearly every commercial advertisement on television or the radio has a PC message in it. Despicable!
We republicans have the same tools as the democrats, but we’ve lost our way or forgotten how to use them. Our current leadership lost its compass. Nobody is leading us through this cultural battle, but the left.
Until we learn to fight back and deliver our message effectively and continuously to the masses, we’ll never win back the majority of any government branch– at both the state and national level.
I’m heartbroken by the so-called leadership of the Republican Party. In fact, I’m beyond heartbroken, I’m angry. Let me remind you, anger usually stems from fear. I fear that the republicans have allowed the liberals to beat us down so deep into a hole, that it’s nearly impossible for us to dig ourselves out of this abyss. When I hear, fellow republicans blame the democrats my palms get sweaty. An actual republican is blaming someone else for our losses?! We’re doing the same thing they dems always do—blame others for our misery.
This mind-set and behavior will only result in more liberal leadership. Wake up and splash some cold water on your face. See the world through conservative lenses. Take accountability for your own failures, recognize it, and take the necessary steps to correct your faults. Don’t blame your neighbor. We don’t have room for crybabies and whiners. There’s no crying in politics.
My apology, I intended to submit my comments to another category.
Beautifully written Charles. God bless.
This is an amazing article – very eloquent (including quality of content as well as style)!
I particularly think the comments about the state of Europe are enlightening, and should lead more people to read up on the (mostly negative) effects of immigration-without-integration on the continent.
This doesn’t have to become another hetero-vs-homo fight, folks. It’s a good article, ’nuff said.
==This doesn’t have to become another hetero-vs-homo fight, folks.==
Those who claim to be homosexual started it.
We’re not backin’ off.

“Enjoyed the read, Charles. Well done and thought provoking on so many levels. I would love to see someone in Hollywood capture these ideas and put form into characters and place and identifiable situations, so that others can see and grasp what’s slithering through the American Pie. Maybe you’ll be the one to bring that to fruition.”

Joy Brighton, welcome to the club!
There is such a thing as a “compassionate conservative”, more of a rule than not. A different expression but the basic concept is an equivalent of bleeding heart liberal (provided that it is genuine–which in the most cases of modern narcissist liberals is just a convenient fashion–it is like buying absolutions during middle ages).
Haven’t nailed it yet, but perhaps this is the factor, the authenticity, that enables discernment and rejection of relativism which is mostly expresses as not taking a stand in confrontation with evil, a cowardice, while being brave when there is no risk of serious repercussions.
In other words, you have basically your head screwed on right.
[...] Here is a very interesting essay about a self-described Democrat’s awakening regarding the self-loathing and guilt America tends to throw on itself when other countries or religions become angry with our way of life. It’s a long read, but a good one. I recommend it. (H/T to Chap). Like most people, I was too worried about what was yet to come [...]
Excellent, excellent article. Thank you for sharing it with us!
Mea culpa! But from a conservative point of view. I never thought much of Islam until 9-11 either. Then I bought a couple of copies of the Koran. Wow! What an eye-opener! And I thought, “How can gays (among others)not see what’s up? And with only a minute’s introspection, I realized, Hell! I didn’t see it either. Great article. Thanks – and I’m straight.
The very fact that you believe in primitive mythologies is ignorant, my friend! Read into some physics, and enjoy the wonders of a world that CLEARLY lacks a theistic God.
This article was way too long.
Islam is not the problem, religious fundamentalism is, whether it be Christian, Moslem, Jewish or Hindu.
Also, Israel is not a democracy, the Palestinians who were expelled from their homes and villages are not allowed to vote. Israel is a theocratic, racist, Apartheid state.

Thanks for this piece, Charles. You’re right, there is a huge difference between a pluralistic democratic republic and our Islamist foes. As a conservative Republican, we can agree to disagree on a number of issues. Even so, disagreements don’t end in violence. Accommodating those who do resort to violence only leads to more of the same.
All the best,

I wish more of the left would read this and consider the truth that you have written. Thank you for sharing!
Joe M. It’s really not the point of this post, but I thought you should be provided some clarification on the matter Old Testament Law as it relates to the New Testament.
Jesus: Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
Paul: In the same way, my brothers, you also were put to death to the law through the body of Christ, so that you might belong to another, to the one who was raised from the dead in order that we might bear fruit for God.
For when we were in the flesh, our sinful passions, awakened by the law, worked in our members to bear fruit for death.
But now we are released from the law, dead to what held us captive, so that we may serve in the newness of the spirit and not under the obsolete letter.
In other words, we are not bound by the Old Law. (Much of which was culturally necessary to maintain the cohesiveness and multiplication of the Israelites.)We don’t simply dispense with the Old Testament. It is necessary to understand the New Testament. (I agree with you that we Christians need to take a second look at the Old Testament laws some of our co-religionists often site to prove homosexuality is unacceptable.)
It seems that people who are not people of faith and at times hostile to it, are the ones who have the most strictly fundamentalist interpretation of scripture. It reflects an ignorance that is most often ascribed to “red neck Bible thumpers.”
To the other Joe: Also, Israel is not a democracy, the Palestinians who were expelled from their homes and villages are not allowed to vote. Israel is a theocratic, racist, Apartheid state.
All not true. You, sir, are either willfully ignorant or a liar. Or both.
PatrickP,

Thank you for this wonderful article. If you really look at it, you will find that the Christians and the Proud of America crowd will be the ones that defend your right to be who you are, and live how you want to live. As a conservative christian, I think your article is quite good and should be required reading by every college student. I have read the same books you mentioned and they opened my eyes. Bottom line when 9/11 happened you recognized evil as did I. And as Bush said:”we have seen this before”, so true. I wish you well and I will look for more articles written by you. Next time you edit your writings, omit "I'm sorry." You don't have to apologize for that.
Thank you for a passionately written defense of freedom.
I stopped reading when you wrote that Israel agreed to every concession in 2000. That alone proves that you don't know much about the situation then and now. Look at the map: Israeli land grabs on the west bank would have resulted in a Palestinian bantustan, a non-state. No way could Arafat accept those terms. And this is coming from a strident antijihadist.
