Freedom Isn’t Free
by Chele StantonWhile volunteering for the McCain Campaign last year, I ran across a display of quotes by former President Ronald Reagan… One of them touched my heart so deeply that it inspired me to sit down and start writing a song as a tribute to our men and women in the United States Military.
The quote said…
“We all share the love of peace, but our sons and daughters must learn two lessons men everywhere and in every time have had to learn: that the price of freedom is dear, but not nearly as costly as the loss of freedom – and that the advance and continuation of civilization depend on those values for which men have always been willing to die for…”
While some of our brave men and women in uniform have made it safely back home to their loved ones, others have come home wounded – their lives forever changed. Yet still, there are those who have gone on to another home – paying the ultimate price for freedom… with their lives…
May we always remember and NEVER forget… Freedom Isn’t Free.
FREEDOM ISN’T FREE
Freedom isn’t free – It takes a sacrifice
The courage to believe – In doing what is right
Protecting all that’s dear – Through the blood, the sweat, the tears
No, freedom isn’t free
Freedom isn’t free – It takes a sacrifice
The willingness to love – And fight for what is right
Protecting all that’s dear – Should be clear to you and me
That freedom isn’t free
From the halls of Montezuma – To the shores of Tripoli
We will fight our Country’s battles – In the quest for liberty
Over hill and dale and sky and sea – Freedom’s price is dear
But greater is the cost – To see our freedom lost
Oh say can you see – By the dawn’s early light
America, America – Is shining bright
And to all those who fought – For the Home of the Brave
We thank you, thank you – For all you gave
Freedom isn’t free – It takes a sacrifice
A daughter or a son – A husband or a wife
A sister or a brother – A father or a mother
No, freedom isn’t free
Freedom isn’t free – It takes a sacrifice
A daughter or a son – A husband or a wife
A sister or a brother – A father or a mother
A neighbor or a stranger – To keep us safe from danger
Protecting all that’s dear – Through the blood, the sweat, the tears
No, freedom isn’t free
Protecting all that’s dear – Through the blood, the sweat, the tears
No, freedom isn’t free
Protecting all that’s dear – Should be clear to you and me
Through the blood, the sweat, the tears – We will fight for liberty
And with faith in God above – We’ll preserve this Land we love
Though freedom isn’t free
Make no mistake about it – You wouldn’t want to live without it
But freedom isn’t……….. Free

As a corollary, the irony is that we are only as free, civilized and peaceful as we can enforce.
Very nice Chele. The structure sorta fits in with the post about conservatives in literature that's been up for a few days, and the sentiment is spot on true. But there are too many people who will not learn the lessons of history or believe what they are seeing with their own myopic eyes. How will these people ever know the value of what they have never known the cost of?

How many don't realize how much we're losing even now from within?
Freedom isn't free, and it can't be maintained by an ignorant, complacent populace.
Beautiful song and wonderful sentiment. May the sacrifices never be in vain.
Nice piece. Thank you.
my new fav quote for freedom: Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it. ~Thomas Paine
fatigue indeed….god bless us all in undergoing the fatigue of supporting it.

Thanks Chele,
You took the words right out of my mouth. (and, with my big mouth…that's saying a lot).
A bright and new face at BH.
Man, I didn't believe it could happen in my lifetime…but I think it's "love at first sight" all over again.
Not Over.
Very nice and certainly appropriate on Memorial Day.
HITYLTILY? It is beautiful in wording. I would love to hear it with the appropriate music behind it. I'm very proud of you.
Dear Chele,
I am not free to stop abortion. I am not free to abolish the income tax. I am not free to refuse to pay my tax money to Israel. I am not free to stop the filth of pornography. I had all of two choices for president on my State ballot last November, so I was free to NOT vote for the candidate of my choice, who didn't stand a chance of winning any way, because of the system which has been rigged since the illegal "Civil War".
I was not free to avoid the Marxist public indoctrination centers, nor their extension, the university indoctrination centers. Even if my parents or I had known at the time what they were, we still would have been forced to pay taxes to support them. I was not free to pray in school to the Heavenly Father, nor even read the 10 commandments.
I am not free to say to a Negro, I won't serve you in MY restaurant, should I so chose, and a Negro can't do the same to me, if he so chooses, so neither of us really owns our businesses, and neither of us is truly free. I was not free to stop the 20 million illegal, and 40 million "legal" non-White criminal invaders of my country over the past 40 years who have turned my people into a vilified minority in what was formerly my country.
I am not free to demand the non-White Marxist currently pretending he is president to show everyone he is even eligible to be president of this once great land. And by once great, I'm talking 1776 to 1861.
I am not free to halt the spread of the homosexual mafia and their evil agenda to rape children. And most importantly, I am not free to learn the TRUTH behind who actually pulled off the 9-11 job.
If this is freedom, what exactly does tyranny look like? So with all due respect, you can take your "freedom" and shove it up your ass lady!
Pattiann, let me fix this for you…
God bless all in fatigues who are supporting it.
Thank you, what a fitting way to end the Memorial Day weekend.
it is worth remembering, particularly on these days of patriotic hubris, that not all who serve espouse and honor the spirit and the word of our founders, nor do those we attack always constitute an evil that is trying to destroy our "freedom." it's very easy to get caught up in the moment of a heartfelt song or a flag waving high, but true freedom is a measured, objective, difficult, complex state of being that is gained and maintained through intelligent, thoughtful actions and a foreign policy that compels through reason and integrity, not through intimidation and fear. the u.s. is not perfect. we never have been. we have made HUGE mistakes, and we will make them again. if we are to hope for anything on a day like today, it's that we learn from our mistakes, make fewer in the coming years, and use our best, brightest, and bravest to spread the best elements of our democracy through words and deeds, not through guns and bombs.
Thanks Chele, as the Marine Corps bumper sticker says "America, home of the Free, Because of the Brave!"
You are an idiot! You are trying to sound like an intellectual, and truly are not! THINK about what you are saying! Move to another country if you don't understand what it is to have freedom here in The U.S.A. and why we have it! 3,000 people died on 9-11, and we must fight to prevent this from ever happening again…and have been successful. I urge you to leave this country Mr. or Mrs. "I Love America too" because your words tell that you DO NOT love America, and you do not have a clear understanding of what it takes to be a true American. Today is a day in which we honor our heroes, the men and women who have the courage and willingness to fight for our freedom. How dare you write such an un-American and un-patriotic statement on this day. I would like to see you have a discussion with al qaeda without one of our brave men or women by your side. Chances are you would not walk away from that "discussion". Remember our troops fight for YOUR freedom too! GOD BLESS AMERICA and the men and women that have fought for us, and continue to do so for our freedom.
amen. and may i offer an amendment to your correction : as well as those in civies entrenched in doing what we can to correct our course.
Just wonderful Chele!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE it! Happy Memorial Day!!!
xoxo
GOD BLESS our Brave Men and Women!
Geez dude,. simply man up and say what you want to, clearly and directly. We can take it.
Take it easy Laura, his breasts are sore today.
it is unfortunate that you believe that anyone who does not share your political opinions should give up their u.s. citizenship and move to another country. i have always been of the understanding that free political discourse and opposing viewpoints allow us to have a strong and diverse democracy. diverse political opinions led to the abolishment of slavery and led to the right for YOU, as a woman, to vote, for example. loving one's country is being willing to avoid bandwagons and to speak the truth, no matter how unpopular, in the hopes of making us a better country worth the respect of the entire world. 9/11 was an awful event, to be sure, but since iraq was not involved in this action, why would we waste our best and brightest on such a lengthy, costly, unrelated and unprovoked conflict in iraq? a concise, military action aimed at capturing and prosecuting bin laden would have been the appropriate response, and we would have saved hundreds of billions of our tax dollars and thousands of lives. but bush, when questioned about this, confessed that he 'didn't spend a lot of time thinking about him." ??? supporting the troops means, first and foremost, NOT sending them to do the dirty work for corporations. imagine if we'd had our military resources at full-strength when katrina hit? we could have showed the world just how capable we are of protecting our own citizens. instead, we imperiled them at home and then abroad by showing our disregard for international law. leave the country? not a chance. instead, i will stay and vote in every election until i die, in the hopes that true democracy can thrive here, and around the world.
You are uninformed and brainwashed by the media. Sad sad person you must be.
pardon me bruce lee, but i believe that i did just that. would you please elaborate on any obfuscations you found in my retort?
Why even read this to begin with?…It's Memorial Day…you knew it would be patriotic and you obviously are not.
rush, quit posting on public news forums. you have your radio show to do that.
I LOVE the BIG words you must be soooo smart! Loser!
To Sal, (the mandor),
Never fear…the libtard Moby's are here.
Go back under your rock, slime ball.
Not Over.
pardon my confusion, but how, in your opinion, does one become "informed?" furthermore, your criticism of the media seems rather hypocritical, considering you are posting on a media website. are you referring to "the liberal media" as being a part of this brainwashing movement, and not sources like drudgereport and fox news who, you would certainly argue, are not mouthpieces of the left?
Very good, JimBob.
You, sir, are an ass.
At least, you are free to say all that. Discuss, as only you, the great unwashed, can. Leave me out.
Tell all that to Kim-Jung-willie-Il Smith, whatever, and that malignant Persian dwarf Abajamalamadingdong. I think they have some "measured, objective, difficult, complex state of being" they would like to share with you, professor. Hint: Thought processes like yours START wars, they don't end them. Difficult for you to comprehend, isn't it? I hear they are doing a Persian remake of Dr. Zhivago. You would be perfect in the Klaus Kinski part of the subjagated intellectual. "I am the only free man here". Sorry, I had to add a chuckle or two. That's it, …..dismissed.
he lernt dem wurds over dere at the HuffPo, he did.
I just wanna know if they brought pie to this picnic?
I know there are one or two libtarded talking points that are not in there. just can't put my finger on which ones.
–furthermore, your criticism of the media seems rather hypocritical, considering you are posting on a media website. —
Dood, if you are going to experiment with advanced sentence structure and straw man building, try it out on your dorm buddies first, k? Thanks. Lotsa hash outta help. There ya' go. Go on. Spark it up.
Oh, and bye the bye, old man, the correct answer is: This is NOT a media website, not a media website. Circle gets the square and make mine apple with some vanilla ice cream. I'll work it off in the gym tomorrow. Thanks! Bye now.

Lets try this. Sometimes you must resort to violence and sometimes you don't. How hard is that to understand.
shhhh….he is exposing his giant intellect. Rarely seen in nature.
Can somebody, anybody do anything about the disappearing posts?
Hate makes you stupid. It also makes you very alone.
Like you've ever actually listened to Rush.
Hey Sal er I mean I love america too….. er I mean deceptive Soros Paid Flunky er …. you get the point.
Talking to you own sock puppet is a sure sign of mental depravity even on an internet blog.
Don't you and the rest of the staff at Media Matters have anything better to do. I hear there is another plumber, this time in Iowa, complaining about high taxes. Don't you need to investigagte him or something before he has a chance to ask the One an embarissing question like "How will your tax policy affect me".
Hey maybe we could set up the first freely elected democratic republic in Iraq or something. We could even have all the Iraqi's paint their finger purple after they voted. That;d really show those warmongering neocons wouldn't it. Now there is spreading democracy through word and deed that Cheney and Halliburton would never allow………………
Oh wait……………………………………….
That's beautiful, Chele. God Bless our Servicemen and Servicewomen, and Happy Memorial Day!!

Alot of what you say is true…. but this isn't the place for it. Have some respect for this woman's piece and all of our peace. Go fight your quixotic fight somewhere more appropriate.
Boy, the costs of freedom are bloody high. I can say this with some confidence: (to steal from a wiser, smarter man than I) our troops aren't going off to fight for the stimulus bill or the department of health and human services. They're fighting for something much grander and harder to quantify.
Fabulous song btw, would be nice to hear it sung……:)
well, if your syntax is any indication, at least you are proof that not all conservatives are against personal narcotic use. but what IS alarming is the level of anger and disrespect you all seem to throw at any opinion that isn't your own. i mean, did i personally insult any of you? i was hoping for a reasoned, intelligent discourse, but i guess those are things which don't really interest you. perhaps that's part of the reason why your party is now irrelevant…. a sad footnote to history. ah well, have fun fading into the sunset. us pinko commies have taken over.
Fallen But Never Forgotten
Thanks Chele. I missed this on Memorial Day but you told be about it the other night. How true are your words.
