Thus was shown how Star Trek got soft and squishy and wimpier as the timeline went on, requiring deadlier menaces threatening all human life, even all life period, to motivate anyone to do truly noteworthy acts. No wonder the new movie is a "re-imagining" of the universe, seems they're starting over at the beginning to get it right. There wouldn't even be a Federation without capitalism, Zefram Cochrane only built his warp drive to get money. Now all the talk from TNG onward makes more sense, with people concerned about "furthering their careers" and "how they are remembered," seeking prestige. A Federation whose greatest people are solely motivated by having their egos stroked. Bring on the Borg, signs of intelligent life are fading fast.

A money-free society was one of Roddenberry's tenets for a utopian future. Latinum was used to barter with the Ferengi who were not in the Federation.

"…so why do we have this idea that there is no money in the Federation?"

Actually, there was always money in Star Trek. The Federation called theirs 'credits'.

DS9 introduced latinum bars as a hard currency, also it was easier to see the latinum on the Dabo table than just some numbers in your personal credit account.

You know, we were just talking about that. There was money on DS9–and everybody seems to be aware that 'gold-pressed latinum' has value. There are traders plying their wares across the galaxy(ies) and Federation citizen buying those wares–somehow…so why do we have this idea that there is no money in the Federation?

In Star Trek, there is no money. So, free vacations do not make sense because it already is socialist. And it's not just America or Earth, it is the entire Federation of Planets.
