Review: ‘Extract’-ing Laughs is Easy
by Carl KozlowskiJoel is just an average guy, a quiet yet well-to-do American living in a small town who happens to own a flavor-extract company. He’d like to sell the plant, retire early and get back to a healthier sex life with his bored, put-upon wife.
But just as he seems prepared to make a deal with food giant General Mills to sell the plant for good, a freak accident occurs inside his plant that lops off one of a long-time employee’s testicles. The other is hanging by a thread, a metaphor that is apt for Joel’s life as it suddenly spirals out of control via a surreal round-robin of relationships that come unhinged and turn his life upside-down in the new comedy film “Extract.”
Written and directed by Mike Judge, who has chronicled the modern everyman’s life in the long-running and brilliant Fox cartoon “King of the Hill” as well as in the short-running yet brilliant 1999 film “Office Space,” “Extract” takes a sharp-eyed and sharp-tongued look at middle-class values in Middle America. But once again, Judge proves that he possesses a true love for the common, working-class Joe that translates into comedy that uplifts rather than demeans the lives of its characters.
And what characters they are, with Jason Bateman and Kristin Wiig as the lead couple; the gorgeous Mila Kunis playing Cindy, a con-artist whose ever-shifting false love interests enable her to sleep her way to the top of the bottom of the American ladder of success; Ben Affleck, in a hilarious turn as a mullet-sporting bartender named Dean, who can find a way to make any of his incredibly sleazy schemes sound perfectly moral; and Clifton Collins, Jr. as Step, the slow-witted warehouse worker whose twisted testicular travails drive the plot forward. Add in Dustin Milligan in a star-making performance as an incredibly dense aspiring gigolo named Brad, and you’ve got a cast of fresh faces and actors reinventing their personas, with the resulting effect being that Judge’s best lines aren’t just quotable, but rooted in a strong sense of realism turned askew.
“Extract” marks a welcome return to form for Judge, who spent the decade following “Office Space” immersed in television work and writing-directing the ambitious but highly uneven film satire “Idiocracy” in 2006. After seeing that passion project – in which an average American soldier wakes up 500 years in the future after an experiment goes awry and discovers he’s now the smartest man in the country – trapped on the Fox studio shelf for more than two years before getting literally dumped into a handful of theaters with no ad campaign to support it, Judge has clearly decided to return to the working-class characters that have made him a zillionaire already.
This time, though, Judge has improved his storytelling from the often-sketchy plotting of “Office Space,” making every scene an essential piece in an ever-more-complicated puzzle of riotous shenanigans. The overall effect matches the powerhouse effect of my favorite comedy of 2008, the Coen Brothers’ “Burn After Reading,” due to its whiplash pacing, utterly amoral and unpredictable characters and twisted dialogue.
Usually a film’s release on Labor Day weekend suggests that it’s a forgettable failure, with a merciful death assured amid the fading glow of summer box-office expectations. Thankfully, that isn’t the case with “Extract,” which deserves a long life in the theaters before its inevitable union with Judge’s other works as comedy staples to be quoted by generations to come.

Thanks for the heads-up! I will check this out.
Judge's stuff is always entertaining and it doesn't bash you over the head with message or condescension.
Burn after Reading best comedy of 2008? Really? Really?
Gotta love a guy who makes movies for US and not for "international markets".
I would really like to watch this movie, but I despise Jason Bateman. I completely fail to see why anyone thinks he's gifted or funny – he had rightly fallen into anonymity before the over-praised mess that was "Arrested Development", and since then we've had to suffer through his limited range and stilted line readings in various venues.
Why didn't Judge just get Luke Wilson to come back? Or Ron Livingston?
Quick hat tip to Jason Bateman who, to me at least, is always surprisingly funny and seems somewhat under appreciated.
Why is a man being kneed in the groin or losing his testicles always, always, used as comic fodder?
Show me a female character to gets it in the groin – say, a female baseball/softball player who doesn't wear a cup and the ball takes a funny hop – and let's see how funny that scene will be.
It's not as funny when it happens to a girl.
If you slap a person with a fish though, that's funny regardless of gender.
Or a monkey urinating on someone. ALWAYS funny!
Looks good…I look forward to watching a movie with cojones! Or maybe not….
Breaking wind is funny too, no matter who's doing it.
Dam Enchiladas!
You can't tell me in History of the World Part 1, when Dom DeLuise sits on the throne as Caesar and floats an air biscuit that you don't crack up every time…..
You lost me at "often sketchy plotting of Office Space" – that movie was darn near perfect. Other than that I enjoy your reviews.
remember the higharchy: female beats male
many women would go come unglued if they did this. it is just not allowable. and remember a woman slapping or hitting a man is an exceptable expression of emotion. my guess is that deep down we still have chivalry in our collective subconscious.
just a guess
but a mascara applicator in the eye, now that is funny. and if it were a dude? even funnier.
My point is it shouldn't be done as a comedy device either way. Surely there are ways to make us laugh other than strikes to the groin.
The Three Stooges and Laurel and Hardy, for example. No scenes ever of any of them being hit in the groin and their slap-stick is always hilarious.
You knuckle-heads … nyuk nyuk. Here's another fine mess you've gotten me into.
and he positions himself so well for that specific gastric delivery.
As someone that lives that sort of life, I have to completely agree with you. It was as if someone was following me around with a camera…
I'm sure it's a good film, but FYI Labor Day weekend release is not meant for junk films. It's counted on as an important weekend. March and August are the death release times. Also, personae is the word, not personas.
Yes, Dom DeLuise was a true artist…..
The man knew how to coaxe a laugh out of any situation, and enjoy himself to no end while doing it.
Amen to that, brother….
I'm with you on that, the guy's delivery is excellent and he plays the staright man perfectly.
It should be noted that an episode of "King of the Hill" did indeed have Peggy Hill getting kicked in the groin as the punchline to a joke.
Simply put, Mike Judge is very cool!
RIP The Goode Family
I agree with the crotch-hit jokes. It feels bad when you get hit there. I don't know why they do it in so many movies/TV shows/ whatever.
That being said, Mike Judge certainly has done a lot in all those years since I saw Frog Baseball on Liquid Television.
I'll look forward to seeing this film/movie. I agree w/previous posters, Mike Judge is great. I found "Office Space" by happy accident, while channel surfing, and never tire of watching. Jason Bateman is indeed a great straight man, quite under rated in my opinion.
I just got to see Idiocracy. I want to see this one, badly. I haven't wanted to see a movie "badly" in a loooong time.
Is this a serious question? Do you know the difference between boys and girls?
looks great. office space is a total classic.
I liked David Forsmark's column on King of the Hill in National Review a while back…http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=MmU5ZjhiMzU2...
I miss Hank!
[...] 1st, 2009 at 09:18 PM I recently read a column on Breitbart.com by Carl Kozlowski, looking at Mike Judge’s new movie, Extract. Kozlowski loved the movie, talking about how great it is to see a look at average guys and [...]
Wash this!
"But once again, Judge proves that he possesses a true love for the common, working-class Joe that translates into comedy that uplifts rather than demeans the lives of its characters. "
Since the loss of John Hughes, we've needed someone to fill this void.
Can't wait for this one—Judge is very good at what he does and this seems to be a winner.
Hah! He does seem a bit unclear on the differences between man & ladyparts.
I've sat through the trailer a few times…I thought it looked kind of dreadful, actually. Between the slapstick and Ben Affleck in a hideous fake wig & beard, I'll respectfully let this one slide by. It just looks to me like everyone's trying waaay too hard.
I've been looking forward to this movie since I saw the trailer a few months back, I LOVE 'Office Space' and simply adore 'Idiocracy' because his vision is probably what is going to happen in our future because it is so close to reality. Thanks for the review I can't wait now.
WHAT? The Goode Family? Dead? I love(d) that show!
Ang should be happy we never invented Smell-o-vision; the movie would've made even less.
Idiocracy got LITERALLY dumped? Don't remember that.
(Sorry, a pet peeve).
You have obviously never seen "Idiocracy". One of the most popular TV shows 500 years in the future is called "Ow! My Balls!" and consists of some poor schmuck getting kicked in the nuts every 10 seconds or so.
Mike Judge is completely aware of the idiocy of testicle-damage "humor".

Last movie I saw at a theater was Benjamin Buttons back in January. Hollywood would go out of business if they relied on me, but Extract is definitely on my list to catch when it opens. Judge can do little wrong and has a keen eye for what bothers and elates the average, everyday person.
Idiocracy was genius in it's writing. There may have been some technical issues from a classic 'film-making' perspective – but the comedy and satire was some of the best in the last 10 years. Judge is amazing.
"Dude it sais. like right here that your all messed up.. plus you talk like a tard"
Mike Myers' highly underrated 1993 film "So I Married an Axe Murderer" features Amanda Plummer taking a swift kick. Not the highest of hilarity, but they crossed that line. THe movie, overall, though is pretty fun.
I think the female equivalent is getting hit in the breast – like the fight in "Kingpin". Funny, right? That hurts us alot more than getting it in the groin, and I laughed at that scene.

I'm a fan of Arrested Development, but have similar sentiments about Michael Cera.
Even the memory of getting hit in the balls is funny. Painful. But funny.
